The Town Council 'Sheringham Thank You' community project got off to a good start at a pop-up stall in Sheringham Town Centre.

People were invited to write short postcards of thanks to anyone who lives or works in the Town. Lots of people took time out from their shopping to join in, and it was a great encouragement to read about so many people whose actions make the Town such a special place. The display boards will be up at The Community Centre and The Reef and we hope even more people will take time to join in with the project. Drug Raids in Sheringham and Norwich Lead to Three Arrests

On 1 February, after an excellent lunch at the Links Hotel in West Runton, we enjoyed a vivid and well-illustrated talk by the author Phyllida Scrivens. Her theme (which is also the title of her book, published last year) was “The Great Thorpe Railway Disaster of 1874”.

Police raided six properties in Norfolk on Tuesday 8 February as part of an operation targeting cannabis production.

On 10 September 1874, late in the evening, a mail train pulled out of Great Yarmouth, bound for Norwich. Also, a train which had arrived from London, pulled out of Norwich, bound for Yarmouth. This train was late, and instead of waiting for the incoming train from Yarmouth to come through, it was mistakenly allowed to leave the station. The two trains met on a single-track section of the line, and the very rainy and windy weather made it harder for the train drivers to see the danger.

The simultaneous raids took place in Sheringham and Norwich.

Officers raided five addresses in Sheringham, four of which were on the High Street while the fifth was in Hardingham Drive. Police also targeted an address in Royal Sovereign Avenue in Norwich.

The trains collided on a bridge over the River Yare. Both drivers and the two firemen were killed instantly; 17 of the passengers died then or shortly afterwards and a further 10 were to die later of their injuries.

Although a further 70 were recorded as injured, happily over 100 other passengers were able to walk away from the accident; the casualty toll could have been much worse had the carriages not been separated from the locomotives by some commercial wagons. News of the disaster was published in the local and national press, and investigations, a trial and claims for compensation followed the incident, although one positive consequence was that railway safety measures were tightened up considerably. The graves of the driver (John Prior) and fireman (James Light) of the train from Yarmouth are to be found in the Rosary Cemetery in Norwich.

Cannabis grows were discovered in two flats on the High Street in Sheringham, with approximately 75 mature plants in each.

Police cordons remain in place at officers will be at the properties today to dismantle and seize the grows.

A 20-year-old man arrested at one of the flats was taken to Aylsham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and later charged with producing cannabis. Oskeol Zalli, of High Street, Sheringham, was remanded in police custody and will appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court on Wednesday 9 February.

Phyllida’s excellent talk, which also described the very varied backgrounds of many of those involved in the disaster, was applauded by the chairman and members. 24 members were present, including some new ones.

Two further arrests were made, a 69-year-old man was detained at a property in Hardingham Drive while a 66-year-old was arrested at an address on the High Street. Both were arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and questioned at Aylsham Police Investigation Centre and later released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Small Furries at Age Concern North Norfolk Caring for small animals is usually a childhood experience that we look back on with wonder and love.

Guinea pigs graze constantly so our ladies had a lovely time feeding them with bits of carrot and lettuce.

We had the visit of six beautifully- coloured female guinea pigs from Cavies and Cakes of Fakenham. All of our female clients fully embraced the opportunity to cuddle and feed them – our gentlemen were a little more reticent however!

Cavies and Cakes have a café where the guinea pigs are on show in their cages so perhaps we will arrange an outing in the warmer weather to see them and enjoy a cream cake or two ourselves!

Guinea pigs live for around 6 years and can produce 2-5 young – all born with full coats and eyes open.

Paddy Corden RIP

We are always looking for ways to stimulate the senses of people coming to the centre and visits such as this bring out their caring skills, memories of childhood or having pets for their own children and helping with relaxation.

Paddy Corden, well known resident of Sheringham, died suddenly on Wednesday 2nd March. Paddy was heavily involved in the community, a long-time member, Chairman and President of the Sheringham Horticultural Society, also Chairman of The Beeston Branch of the Charity of Edmund Hooke and the Unknown Donor. In years gone by, he had been a member of the North Norfolk Players and helped construct many a set for productions at The Little Theatre.

This is especially important for people who are sometimes more agitated in the afternoon and we have evidence that this type of activity calms people and takes their minds off themselves.

Half of our support workers have completed Level 2 training in Dementia and our centre is a great resource for people living with dementia and their carers.

Often to be found at his allotment tending prize winning blooms and produce, he regularly entered exhibits in The Sandringham Show winning several prizes. He was proud of his service in The Royal Navy and later working his way up to a management role in the NHS. To those who had the good fortune to know him, he was a kind, supportive and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife Brenda and daughter Kelly.

February marks the start of the 2022 Sheringham Community Awards

It’s an exciting time for the Council with a 3-year project plan being drafted. We have so many projects that are either underway or are planned such as new eco street lighting, improvements to the cemetery and allotments, climate change plans, Queen’s Jubilee celebrations, speed awareness sign, cycle stands, plus more. A complete governance review is also being undertaken for all Council policies and procedures.

The 2022 Annual Parish Meeting will be held at Sheringham Community Centre on 26th April at 6pm. This is a resident meeting so please do come along to hear about the work of the Council and to celebrate local activities and discuss current issues in the community.

Improving communications with residents is a priority and we have made a start by updating our website and social media.

Councillor Surgeries are being held at Sheringham Community Centre every two months to accord with demand. We hope that you will come along and talk to your Councillors about any concerns you have about the town or just pop in and meet us for a chat. Sheringham District and County Councillors have been invited to attend. We are keen to meet residents and find out your views about the town and the things that matter most to you. The surgeries will be at 6-7pm on the following dates: 26th April, 28th June, 30th August, 25th October, 13th December. The Holt Festival came back with a bang in 2021 and plans are well advanced for 2022 which we will be able to share with you soon. As ever, we will be offering a varied programme of music, art, drama and literature from an exciting range of performers.

He's regarded by many as one of the best guitarists in this country and is a brilliant entertainer who has also appeared on Al Stewart albums and many more. He'll be accompanied by Wendy Ross on electric violin. Wendy has also played with a wide variety of well-known acts. Full details of the gig along with how to purchase tickets, which are £15, appear on our above-mentioned website.

At the heart of the Festival are some very special people, our Volunteer Team.

They generously support the Festival by giving their time, and every year, we look to bring new members into the Team. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer in a variety of roles over the coming months and particularly during Festival week. Even if you are only able to offer a few hours of your time, we’d love to hear from you.

Besides concerts, where we welcome performers from across the country, the hall also provides a stage for quality Norfolk musicians.

Our first music evening after this concert will be on Saturday 26th March when we welcome the well-known North Norfolk band, The Fried Pirates.

This versatile group offers a wide variety of uplifting music and play a variety of instruments. It should be a fantastic evening.

Also, Interns can join the Volunteer Team every year as the Festival has identified roles that will provide excellent experience for undergraduates planning to work in Event Management.

The North Norfolk Railway has announced that over 143,000 visitors travelled on the 5½ mile heritage line during its 2021/22 financial year which ended last week. The popular 5½ mile heritage line was forced to close between Christmas 2020 and April 2021, then endured three-months where only limited operations were possible but rallied in the second half of the year to welcome a total of 143,632 passengers.

Graham Hukins, Commercial Manager, commented, “This is a very strong result in the circumstances, and we are looking forward to a more normal season in 2022. Pre-Covid, we would expect to carry around 160,000 visitors in a full year, so we are very pleased with the 2021 result which is a testament to our volunteers and staff who ensured we delivered great experience for visitors.

He added, “Since the New Year, the team been busy with a huge amount of work behind the scenes to get ready for this year and we’re looking forward to

The work has included annual servicing of steam and diesel engines, repainting some of the line’s vintage carriages, track maintenance, clearing vegetation from the lineside and revarnishing the wooden floors at the line’s three stations.

“Looking after historic locomotives, carriages, track and buildings is a huge year-round effort, “explained Graham, “but there are some tasks that can only be carried out when we’re closed to the public.

He added, “We’ve also looked at ways to ensure today’s passengers get the most out of their visit so have compiled an information flyer to help visitors explore Sheringham, Weybourne and Holt stations, and devised an activity sheet for children. Our Norfolk Landscape

After the long pause due to Covid-19 our monthly talks are up and running again. The first for a while was in February when Rob Spray continued his descriptions of the varied life forms to be found when diving in the seas around our coasts.

John Hurst’s annual watercolour exhibition of Norfolk landscapes and the memoir, Watercolour Words. Fifty Years is taking place at NWT Cley Marshes Visitors’ Centre until 26th April 10am-5.00pm daily. This also includes Changing Landscapes a multi-media performance lead by Home-Stage, the online charity that showcases creative talent to include poetry, folk music and the arts. John is joined by award winning poet, James Knox Whittet and singer, Anna McCrae, who together present an environmentally based performance of watercolour images, stories, songs and poems. The performance takes place at 3.00pm on Sunday 10th April. Tickets are limited to this free event where there will be a retiring collection for Sir Norman Lamb’s Foundation.

The paintings featured in the exhibition are all recent works, depicting the expansive wilds of Norfolk. John will be available each weekend and also by appointment to discuss his work, with a generous proportion of sales being dedicated to the work of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.

Our next talk returns to dry land with David Berwick giving an illustrated talk on the fascinating medieval art contained in the Roof Bosses of Norwich Cathedral. Norwich Cathedral has over a thousand of them, more than any other church or cathedral in Christendom. The location is the Catholic Church Hall, Cromer Road and the date is Thursday 31st March. Doors open at 10.00 am for coffee and delicious cake, with the talk beginning at about 10.30. All are welcome – you don’t need to be a member - and admission is £3 per person.

Don’t forget as well that if you are interested in volunteering to welcome visitors to our lifeboat museum and shell gallery we are holding an open event there on Friday 18th March at 4.30 pm to explain what’s involved. After the pause in activities caused by the pandemic we are very short of stewards so we look forward to seeing you there.

Employment Law: Settlement Agreements

A settlement agreement (previously known as a comprise agreement) is a legally binding, voluntary contract between an employer and employee.

The contract provides that an employee agrees not to pursue any claims against the employer in a tribunal or court in exchange for the payment of a severance sum to the employee.

A settlement agreement may be appropriate where the employment relationship is continuing, but it is most common for these agreements to be entered into where the employment has terminated (or is about to do so).

Since many businesses have faced financial difficulties during the pandemic, it’s likely that the use of settlement agreements will be favoured by employers. This will give employers peace of mind as it will remove any risks of employment-related claims being brought by employees and will firmly draw a line under the employment relationship.

What should you do if your employer offers you a settlement agreement?

A settlement agreement will not be valid unless the employee has received independent legal advice on the terms and effect of the settlement agreement and in particular its effect on their ability to bring a tribunal claim under the relevant legislation.

As an employee will be waiving their right to

pursue any claims, the adviser will consider whether the employee has any claims and will advise on the prospects of success of those claims, along with the potential compensation a successful claim would attract. Under most circumstances, the employer usually contributes towards the cost of receiving that advice.

Whilst the adviser is not required to consider whether the employee is getting a “good deal”, this is certainly something that can be discussed.

If the employee wishes to negotiate for an increase in the compensation payment, this is something the adviser can undertake on their behalf.

Members of the Coastal Art Group, who meet on Friday mornings at Weybourne Village Hall saw their contribution to Bakers and Larners ‘What makes Holt special to you?’ installed, along with other contributions, on the hoardings surrounding the site of the new Budgens store, today.

Back in October last year, we were thrilled to be asked, along with other art groups, artists and schools if we would like to help brighten up the hoardings surrounding the building site for the Budgens rebuild. Armed with books, postcards and numerous photographs members of the group took up the challenge and worked together over the next couple of months to produce a colourful and fun contribution which responded to the brief - “So many aspects of Holt and our local surroundings are special, which is why North Norfolk attracts so many visitors. Along with the beautiful countryside, stunning coastline and charming villages and towns, the wonderful Poppy Line Steam Railway, which links Sheringham to

Weybourne and onwards to Holt provides a wonderful opportunity to experience either new or nostalgic memories for it's passengers, with but a short walk into the delightful Georgian town of Holt for refreshments and shopping. We are very fortunate indeed, to live here."

Little did we know that the whole experience of working together on such a large project would be such fun. To now see it up, it seems almost impossible to imagine the number of ‘person hours’ it took to complete. The Coastal Art Group greatly appreciate the opportunity

The Spring Art Show, which will take place in the Atrium at the Forum, gathers together an eclectic mix of artists working across a range of art forms.

Organised by Norwich artist Brian Korteling the exhibition will be open between 6th and 10th April.

Annually attracting thousands of visitors, the selected works on show will all be for sale.

Brian Korteling said: “After a two-year gap due to the pandemic, it's great to be returning to the Atrium at the Forum. It's such a great space to show art, it has excellent light and there's plenty of room to admire the work.

“People from all walks of life pass through using the library, restaurants and all the other facilities, it's a real community hub and this makes it a perfect space to exhibit art to a wider audience.

“With many artists showing for the first time since lockdown it's going to be even more exciting than usual to see what the artists have produced. As always it will be a fresh eclectic mix of work from local talent working in a variety of styles and media."

Mr Korteling has lived in Norfolk for most of his life and has been a full-time artist since 2009 after a career in graphic design. Each autumn he hosts Art Fair East will fellow Norwich artist Will Teather.

Artists can exhibit any form of 2D or 3D artwork as well as prints, reproductions and cards.

by Environment Secretary George Eustice.

The proposals, which will be subject to consultation, are a response to Julian Glover’s 2019 independent Landscapes Review which looked at whether the protections for National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) are still fit for purpose.

A new national landscapes partnership would bring together those responsible for managing England’s National Parks and AONBs to collaborate, share knowledge and tackle common objectives such as nature recovery and improved public access.

3. Electromagnetic muscle stimulation. This painless, enjoyable procedure (that may make you giggle!) allows muscle toning and true non-surgical lifting by increasing muscle fibres in glutes- the main muscles that form bulk of the buttocks.

By harnessing their collective strengths whilst preserving their independence, the partnership would support local leadership to work together nationally, including by carrying out campaigns, organising events and offering volunteering opportunities that bring people closer to nature.

4. Sculptra or Lanluma bum lift. These are injectable products that stimulate your body’s own collagen giving a dramatic plumping affect.

Lanluma injections help to add volume to buttock area and also improve the appearance of skin by reducing indentations and smoothing cellulite.

5. Radiofrequency and ultrasound. These treatments help lift and firm up skin.

A consultation will also ask for views on proposals to drive nature recovery within our landscapes and support for the communities that live and work within them, such as the design and delivery of new agri-environment schemes and an ambitious management plan for each area.

The Salvation Army in Norfolk has been awarded funding to help feed www.cromergaragedoors.co.uk vulnerable people and families in the county. The church and charity is being supported by the Norfolk Community Foundation through its Household Support Fund to purchase and distribute food parcels.

The Salvation Army is an international Christian church and registered charity which has been transforming lives for more than 150 years. Working in 132 countries worldwide, it offers friendship, practical help and support for people at all levels of need. In the UK and Ireland, this work includes more than 650 community churches and social centres. Major Howard Russell, leader of the Salvation Army in Norfolk, said the funding would have a significant impact.

Norfolk Open Studios 2022

Applications are now open for makers and creators from across Norfolk to take part in Norfolk Open Studios.

The scheme annually sees hundreds of artists opening their studios to the public to share their creative processes – and for the second year running the event will take place in early autumn. Now, artists are invited to apply to take part in the 2022 event which will take place between 24 September and 9 October.

Artists at all stages of their careers are invited to take part, from school and college students through to emerging artists, groups, established and professional creators and makers. As well as opening their studios many artists get together to host art trails, events and demonstrations.

Ros Dixon, Norfolk Open Studios Administrator, said: “Norfolk Open Studios is excited to be launching its call out to artists, as it marks the start of the build-up to this year’s event in the autumn. We’re looking forward to artists and schools from across the county getting involved, with the scheme continuing to be a wonderful way for artists to connect with the public as well as fellow artists. It’s also the second time the event is to be held in the autumn, which is a magical time of year to be inviting visitors to be out and about discovering Norfolk’s artistic community.”

The free event annually attracts thousands of visitors who travel throughout Norfolk to meet our county’s artists. Last year more than 320 artists took part across 237 studios and schools. For visitors it’s a chance to see makers and creators at work in their studios, garages, spare rooms, garden rooms, community spaces and schools, getting an insight into how and where they work – and maybe having a go at getting creative themselves.

The scheme is open to all artists from painters, sculptors, weavers and furniture makers to jewellery makers, wood workers, ceramicists, textile artists and anyone practising their craft throughout the county.

Painter Sara Edwards said: “Last year was my first open studio and I sold many paintings, prints and cards and took several commissions, but the best part was engaging with so many people who were interested in art. As well as making sales, I had the opportunity to promote my teaching workshops and I ran one of these as a Norfolk Open Studios event. Taking part in Norfolk Open Studios was an enjoyable and rewarding experience which provided a new audience for my art and benefitted my career.”

Norfolk Open Studios welcomes applications from all artists, groups of artists and schools – people wishing to take part can apply online or

download an application form from the scheme’s website.

Artists taking part will receive a profile and artwork image in the NOS brochure, a website listing (which remains published on the website for up to a year), as well as posters and postcards to publicise their involvement. They will have the opportunity to take part in the Preview exhibition at The Forum in Norwich, one of the largest annual art exhibitions held at the venue.

Over 90% of adult unpaid carers feel ignored by the Government Survey also reveals unpaid family carers experiencing acute financial hardship as a result of their caring role

• 91% of unpaid family carers feel ignored by the Government • Almost nine out of ten (86%) unpaid carers either agree, or agree strongly, that successive governments have ignored the needs of unpaid carers for a long time • 84% of survey respondents disagreed, or disagreed strongly, with the statement ‘I have confidence in the Government’s ability to improve the lives of unpaid carers • 49% of survey respondents said they’d had to use their personal savings because of their caring role • 51% of survey respondents said they’d had to give up on hobbies or personal interests because of their caring role

Findings from a Carers Trust survey, published today, (1) provide alarming evidence of a deep-rooted failure by successive governments to understand and meet the basic support needs of millions of people struggling to provide unpaid care for a family member or friend.

There is a near total sense among survey respondents of feeling abandoned by Government over a long time. Almost nine out of ten (86%) of unpaid carers agreed, or strongly agreed, that

‘successive governments have ignored the needs of unpaid carers for a long time’.

And only 1% of respondents (just 12 out of more than 1,500 unpaid carers who completed the survey) felt that politicians understand unpaid carers.

A separate poll of the UK public by research company Opinium (2) for Carers Trust found that UK adults support the need for unpaid carers to receive more support from the Government. According to the Opinium poll:

• four in five UK adults (80%) agreed that the Government needs to do more to support unpaid carers.

• more than two thirds (68%) of UK adults agreed that all unpaid carers should receive financial support from the Government.

• almost half (46%) of UK adults did not agree that Carer’s Allowance is a fair level of support for an unpaid carer looking after a family member or friend for a minimum of 35 hours a week.

Unpaid carers being driven into acute financial hardship

Carers Trust’s survey results also demonstrated how many unpaid carers are being driven into acute financial hardship because of their caring role, with inadequate financial support from successive governments widely cited by survey respondents in their written responses.

Of those unpaid carers responding to a question on whether they had had to give up paid work because of their caring role, almost half (48%) said they had.

Financial pressures arising from giving up paid work are further exacerbated for many unpaid carers unable to claim Carer’s Allowance. The survey found that, of those responding to a question on whether they were receiving Carer’s Allowance, more than half (51%) said they were not.

A common complaint from survey respondents was how family carers of pensionable age stopped receiving Carer’s Allowance because they were receiving pensionable income, even though they were caring for a family member round the clock:

“I did [receive Carer’s Allowance] until I reached my state pension age, but as they class a pension as a benefit, and you cannot

get two "benefits" it was taken away. I have an underlying right to it though...Caring gets harder as you get older.”

Many unpaid carers receiving Carer’s Allowance complained that payment of £67.60 a week inadequately recognised the number of hours they spent on their caring role. They also felt the payment was not enough, given the complexity of needs many carers have to deal with. One carer commented that, after adding up all the hours he spent caring for his wife, he was earning just 50p an hour from Carer’s Allowance (2 - see Notes to Editor for more statistics on carers’ finances).

Responding to the survey findings, Carers Trust’s Executive Director of Policy and External Affairs, Joe Levenson, said:

“Day in day out millions of unpaid carers play a crucial role, caring for family and friends and propping up our creaking social care system.

But it’s clear from our survey that this is at great personal cost, and that unpaid carers are struggling to cope and feel marginalised and ignored by government.

Reading the anguished responses from unpaid carers you get an overwhelming sense of how so many have been brought to breaking point.

Unpaid carers are united in saying that they feel ignored and let down by the failure of successive governments to improve their lives, including through wide-reaching social care reform that could ease the responsibilities of care placed so heavily on family carers.

That’s why the all too familiar practice of paying lip service to supporting carers while looking the other way must stop now. We welcome the UK Government’s recognition of the importance of unpaid carers in the recent adult social care white paper and are committed to working together to improve carers lives, but unpaid carers need ambitious and transformational change and they need it now.

The Government could let carers know they have been heard straight away by introducing a national strategy for unpaid carers, to ensure their needs are a priority across government.

And they should act on what unpaid carers have told us, putting them at the heart of this strategy so it’s able to deliver the transformational change that’s desperately needed – such as boosting Carer’s Allowance and making it easier to claim and funding regular breaks and respite for carers.”

In response to the survey findings, and on behalf of the carers who told us what was needed, Carers Trust is calling on Government to develop a new UK Government Strategy for Carers. The strategy should include: improved availability of statutory care and support for people with care and support needs of all ages, so that unpaid carers’ caring roles are sustainable; improved support for unpaid carers themselves, including regular breaks and respite so unpaid carers can live a meaningful life alongside caring; a reform of Carer’s Allowance so that unpaid carers are better protected against financial hardship.

I recently heard someone talking about ‘levelling up the North’. I had to correct them: the government’s intention is to level up the whole country.

What does levelling up mean for us here in the East of England, and in North Norfolk?

Well, it’s about recognising that the East is already an enormous success – we are one of only three UK regions to be ‘net contributors’ to the economy, ie. we produce more than the state invests in us.

With more investment, we could sell the many

So how do we harness what we have and make it even better?

This is where the investment that levelling up will provide is so important. We know that we need better roads and public transport.

We need homes that truly are ‘affordable’, so that our brightest minds can afford to live and work here, rather than leaving the area and going elsewhere.

We need more investment in education and training – such as the highly successful apprenticeships and Restart schemes.

Now that the threat of Covid is beginning to recede and we can begin to look once again towards the future, my job – and that of all the East Anglian MPs – will be to remind everyone that levelling up isn’t just a Northern thing.

We will expect – and demand – that the East of England and North Norfolk receive their fair share too.

We’ve already seen that begin to happen with the huge government investment in North Walsham, and I will continue to advocate for the whole of North Norfolk to benefit in a similar way.

Berry Delicious!

There really is nothing more comforting and delicious than a home baked cake. We serve them up regularly at the Community Café and I am always surprised and delighted by the reaction of people who clearly haven’t had a home baked cake for a while! This is a new

2.5 oz desiccated coconut 3 eggs 3 tblsp milk 2 tsp almond essence 1 small punnet fresh blueberries

variation on my traybake recipe, using fresh fruit for a change and with the addition of some interesting texture from the coconut.

I like to bake this in a loaf tin as it makes it easier to slice, and it is an easy all in one cake to make – no difficult steps here! We road tested this at the Film Festival, and it was very popular, so it will be a regular feature now in our repertoire.

Place all ingredients in a large bowl and beat together until smooth. Carefully stir in the blueberries and pour into a greased and lined 2lb loaf tin. Place in a preheated oven on 180° degrees for 40 mins, or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Turn out onto a wire cooling rack and serve once cold. Will keep for 4 days in an airtight tin.

Pan Fried Sausage, Mushroom and Bacon in Cider

I’m always looking for quick, one pot or pan recipes. Little effort, maximum taste, and here is one that always pleases. It works with veggie sausages and if you are not partial to alcohol, apple juice will be a good substitute. If you want to add extra veggies or your own mix of spices or herbs give it a go, sage always goes well with pork and apples.

The recipe serves 4 but easily doubles, serve with a creamy mash and a little wholegrain mustard.

Ingredients 8 plump pork sausages (or veggie sausages) Oil for frying

2 medium onions, finely sliced 3-4 rashers of back bacon cut into strips 6oz chestnut mushrooms, sliced 1 heaped teaspoon of plain flour ½ pint (300ml) of chicken or veggie stock and cider or apple juice (½ and ½ of whatever you are using) 1 bay leaf (optional) or 1 teaspoon dried sage Seasoning to taste

Method Fry the sausages in a large frying pan until golden (about 15 – 20 mins.

Set them aside and drain some of the oil from the pan. Add the onions and the bacon and fry for 5 mins. Sprinkle over the flour and mix well and cook for a further 2 mins whilst stirring. Pour over the stock/cider mix and bring to the boil. Add the bay leaf/sage and the sausages, check for seasoning, bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 mins, add the mushrooms for the last 10 minutes of cooking.

Serve and enjoy!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

It’s been a quieter month on the homing front with just Joey and Rudey being re-homed and Flokey and Norbet reserved.

You may recall mention of Norbet and Flokey as both these cats joined us via Westover Vets. Norbet, a real character, was handed in as a stray and required surgery as a result of an old injury. Despite being on cage rest while at Westover after his operation, he escaped from the recovery pen three times. We should have called him Houdini! Flokey, another lovely lad, also required surgery for a very nasty wound on his side which required several stiches. These lovely cats will shortly be leaving us for a new home together where we know they will get all the love and attention they deserve.

Joey, who was estimated to be about 11 years old when he joined us last year, had been living as a stray for some time and was not in the best of condition. He also has a head tilt and some balance problems which prevented him from being able to jump up. It does not matter how long it takes us to get a cat fit and healthy, and he had been with us for quite some time, before someone came along and saw what a lovely friendly nature he had and was only too happy to offer him a home.

Rudey too was one of our older residents at 10 years old. He had been with us a little while and was the youngest of four lovely cats who had arrived when their owner could no longer care for them. They all have nice temperaments and are very friendly. Unfortunately, due to the owner’s health problems, these four lovely cats had not been receiving the best of care for quite some time and were all in very poor condition.

Rudey was the first one to be made available for adoption and, again, being a lovely friendly cat and now in the very best of health, was quickly offered a new home. We had several people interested in her, but we always deal with enquiries in the order they are received so many

were disappointed. Billy, one of the other cats that came in with her will shortly be available. He will have been to the vets for a dental by the time you read this and, once it is confirmed that he has a clean bill of health, we will put him up for adoption. Bobby and Tiddles, the other two cats, are not yet ready to leave for new homes.

A practical guide to the new ‘no fault’ divorce law

The long-awaited Act for “no fault” divorce was passed in June 2020. It is due to become law on 6th April 2022. The law is set to end the ‘blame game’ and cut short lengthy separation periods. Here is a practical guide to the changes in divorce proceedings from April 2022 onwards in England and Wales.

1. There is no need to place blame Under the new legislation, couples can divorce without having to cite blame. They will no longer need to rely on one of the 5 grounds for divorce, which previously included: • • • • •

Unreasonable behaviour Adultery Two years separation (with consent) Five years separation (without consent) Desertion

These five grounds will be removed. Under the new law, parties can make a joint statement to apply for a divorce order if they both agree that the marriage has come to an end. Previously, only one spouse could apply for the divorce.

This new option allows both parties to apply together, in a joint, more agreeable way.

2. New terminology The term decree nisi has been used by the court to mark the first stage of divorce after the acknowledgement of papers by the spouse

and after the application has been granted by the court. Under the reformed legislation, this stage of the process will be known as a conditional order.

Similarly decree absolute, which marks the final stage of divorce, confirming that the marriage has officially come to an end, will be known as a final order. This follows the current terms used for ending civil partnerships in a bid to try and simplify the legal process.

3. You can no longer defend a divorce Under the new Act, it will not be possible to contest the decision to divorce.

4. There is a minimum wait period for the Final Order There will be a minimum period of 20 weeks between the initial application and the conditional order, and another six weeks between the conditional and the final order.

That means that even a straightforward divorce will take at least six months to complete.

However, as all divorces are now applied for online, it is unlikely that the process will take any longer than the current divorce process.

5. Is there a change to the court fee?

From 30 September 2021 the Government increased the court fee from £550 to £593.

Whilst official guidance is yet to be released,

it is unlikely that this will change prior to April 2022.

6. How will this affect the finances?

The financial side of divorce will not change.

Divorce and finances are separate but run parallel in the court system. The Act has been created with the intention of making the process of divorce easier and more amicable, but it is unlikely to have any effect on financial matters relating to divorce.

Clients are strongly advised to seek expert legal advice to resolve any financial disputes, and to document any agreement reached into a legally recognised consent order which is then full and final and cannot be changed.

The Trafalgar Branch of Oddfellows in North Walsham has been organising social events and activities for a number of years now.

Now they are turning their attention to newcomers to the area and reaching out to people who may need a little help settling in.

Janet Larter and Tina Hicks, Branch Secretaries of the Trafalgar Branch, said: “Moving to a new town or city is daunting at any age, but when you relocate your entire life in later years, it can be even more difficult to find your feet. Gone are the streets and shops you knew like the back of your hand, the reassurance of friendly and supportive neighbours, and the reliable network of friends you’ve built up through the years.

The good news is that you’re not alone, says the Oddfellows. “We’re a ready-made friendship group and caring bunch of locals that can help you to feel more at home, explore the area and get to know your new neighbourhood,” added Janet.

Upcoming events organised by the Oddfellows include a Coffee Morning meet up at Ramblers, North Walsham Garden Centre on Tuesday 5th April at 10.30am

A local business, whose cruelty-free candles have been stocked by Redwings’ shops since they launched during the pandemic, has created a special edition to raise funds in memory of foal Phoenix.

Norfolk Aromas was set-up at NHS-worker Andrew Macey’s kitchen table – and he credits Redwings with turning his lockdown hobby into a business. Andrew said: “I had set up a social media account to try to sell a few of my candles and Gareth (Austin-Mills), the Retail Development Manager at Redwings, came across it and got in touch.

“He invited me to come for a visit and I just fell in love with the charity. I just thought ‘I want to work with these people. Like so many of us, I followed Phoenix’ story from the very beginning and was devastated that he couldn’t have the long and happy life we all wanted for him. I wanted to do something to honour him and his memory and so we came up with this In Loving Memory candle to raise money for

The Oddfellows has also teamed up with Clinical Psychologist Dr Jennifer Wild to create a list of hints and tips to help anyone who might feel nervous about meeting new people:

1. Choose a group that is linked to your own interests – don’t sign up for a rock-climbing class if you’re not into heights. Perhaps enjoying a coffee with an organised friendship group is a good place to start?

2. Call ahead – a telephone call with the organiser or an existing member will help alleviate your concerns, answer any questions you have and ensure someone can greet you as soon as you arrive.

3. Give yourself permission to leave after five minutes – concentrating on a short period of time is much less daunting than thinking you have to stay for an hour. By focusing on a short time limit you are putting less pressure on yourself.

4. Predict your outcomes – write a list of what you are worried about. Putting pen to paper will help you look at what’s really concerning you and help test whether or not your worries come true. Science shows us that 88% of our worries never happen.

5. Choose your own path – if a group isn’t for you, or you struggle to find a connection, try something else. There are no expectations from anyone but yourself!

Janet Larter added: “We know that walking into a room full of people you don’t know can be daunting. But a warm welcome awaits to anyone wanting to give our friendly group a go.”

Norfolk Business Launches Charity Candle in Memory of Much Missed Phoenix

Redwings, who are not only a wonderful charity but have also been brilliant with me, and so instrumental in my fledgeling business that I really want to give something back.

Phoenix’ story, which I know captured the hearts of everyone who heard about him, is on the back of every candle and all the profits made are going to Redwings to support their vital work.”

Four-month-old foal Phoenix came to the Sanctuary in August last year having been the victim of an apparent arson attack. When his extensive wounds had healed as well as they could and it became clear that they would never allow him to live a good quality of life, further intervention had to be taken.

On Tuesday 19th October, a leading veterinary surgeon from the Netherlands joined the Redwings vet team to perform what it was hoped would be a life-saving procedure at the charity’s Horse Hospital. Very sadly, Phoenix did not recover from the general anaesthetic.

Winter Notes from the Commons

The winter period (Dec/Jan/Feb) has again this year been characterized by storm force winds, particularly towards the end of February, rain and some quite warm days.

There have been very few frosts and only one or two days when wintery showers occurred. There has been no lying snow. Throughout this time Mark Clements and I have continued to monitor the wildlife and the following are the highlights.

December got off to a slow start although two Little Egrets, a juvenile and an adult, were feeding in a stream and the main pond respectively (07 Dec). On the following day (08 Dec) about 1000 Pink-footed Geese were noted overflying in three groups and a Woodcock was reported on the North East Norfolk Bird Club (NENBC) website for the area. Two Firecrests, a Water Rail and over 1500 Pink-footed Geese were seen (09 Dec). The middle of the month became mild and a Peacock Butterfly was out (15 Dec) also a Siberian Chiffchaff was noted and two Water Rails were heard calling.

One of the more familiar winter moths, a male Mottled Umber was found resting on a tree (16 Dec). The female Mottled Umber is wingless and rather spider-like and generally sits on the trunks or stems of its larval food plant, which is any number of British native trees. A flock of around 40 Fieldfares passed over, heading southwest (18 Dec) and two Whooper Swans headed east (20 Dec). The only Short-eared Owl on the Commons this winter was reported by Mark and seen when it was flushed by Corvids.

A Firecrest was still present in the south-west corner of the site (25-27 Dec) and a Woodcock and Brambling were also spotted. The last week of December was unusually mild and

Honey Bees were visiting Gorse flowers and an Adder was observed (30 Dec) on Pill-box Hill.

The New Year opened with a sighting of a Siberian Chiffchaff and a Common Chiffchaff (01 Jan).

A Jack Snipe and a Grey Lag Goose were also reported on the NENBC website for that day.

Mark re-found the Firecrest (02 Jan) along with a Treecreeper and a Grey Wagtail.

Marsh Tit, Fieldfare and Firecrest were noted (12 Jan).

An unusual bird for the Commons was a flock of nine Mute Swans and a bird that has been conspicuous due to its absence finally put in an appearance (19 Jan). This was a flock of around 30 Lesser Redpolls found by Mark, which had dropped to around 20 the following day (20 Jan) as reported by Dave Billham on the NENBC website. While thinning some Sycamore saplings from the wooded area (23 Jan) a few Orange Ladybirds were found hibernating (they will also hibernate on the ground in leaf litter). The ladybirds feed on mildew (fungus) on trees, particularly Sycamore or Ash. A Firecrest was still present in the southwest corner of the SSSI (27 Jan) along with a Marsh Tit. At the end of the month (31 Jan) a pair of Mallard was present on the main pond.

A Red Kite headed west (02 Feb) and a Woodcock and 10 Orange Ladybirds were present in the southern woodland area. Two Ravens heading northwest were noted by Christopher Mason on the NENBC website (05 Feb). A flock of around

30 Goldfinches were noted (09 Feb) and a Song Thrush was heard singing. Walking through the central marsh (11 Feb) two Jack Snipe and three Common Snipe were flushed and 24 Linnets headed for some Gorse to roost for the night. Jack snipe are smaller than Common Snipe and are only winter visitors to the UK with breeding confined to northern Europe and northern Russia. As the middle of the month came nearer (12 Feb) the first spring flora were noted with Primrose, Common & Pleated Snowdrop, Stinking Hellebore and Spurge Laurel found in flower.

The first storm ‘Dudley’ (16 Feb) passed without much incident as did the following storms, ‘Eunice’ (18 Feb) and ‘Franklin’ (21 Feb). A Barn Owl was reported by David Billham (21 Feb) hunting along the eastern edge of the SSSI and the following morning (22 Feb) Mark recorded a Woodlark overflying. From the pill-box Mark also saw two Red Kites heading east and a Marsh Harrier heading west (23 Feb). The Firecrest was present (26 Feb) and a Tawny Owl was also calling around mid-day. The first Adder of the year was seen basking out of the wind in a former WWII trench (28 Feb) and a male Brambling was observed heading east.

The last week of February has certainly been a lot calmer and very sunny – will it last into March and if so do we welcome a quiet spell for a while. The old saying about March is ‘In like a Lamb – out like a lion’, which if true could mean a return to rough weather at the end of the month.

Davy Crockett - A Bear’s Worst Friend

Davy Crockett “killed him a bear when he was only three” according to the song. He never did. Nor did he ever claim to have done so. But the very suggestion was not taken kindly by the big grizzly fraternity. They felt humans and Walt Disney in particular were taking liberties.

You don’t mess with these bears: 800 lbs of fur, fat and muscle. They can give you nasty stare - and if you’re unlucky you become lunch.

Born in Tennessee Crockett had a colourful life as a politician, soldier, frontiersman, huntsman and tracker. Hard to know how he found time for it all.

Having left school and home at 13 he set out on his chequered career. Crockett tried his hand at everything from farming to manufacturing wood barrels and gunpowder, but his forte was as a professional hunter.

He spent much of his life stalking grizzlies in the Tennessee woods, selling their pelts, meat and oil for profit. He claimed to have bagged 105 in seven months during the winter of 1825-26. Which didn’t exactly endear him to the local bear community (or what was left of it).

Crockett’s fondness for hunting dangerous game and the tales he spun about it played a major part in making him a frontier legend. According to one yarn, he killed a bear in a hand to paw fight, stabbing it in the heart with a butcher’s knife. The bear may have begged to differ. In fact, he shot them all.

During his life he didn’t always make good career moves - especially his last when he sided with the Republicans, working mainly as a tracker.

Post-script.

Some young Californian black bears have apparently started behaving strangely approaching humans in a non-aggressive and even friendly manner. One young female walked into a school classroom and sat down with the children. Another tried to get onto a snowboard along with its user. A brain infection has been suggested as the cause.

Would such behaviour have have endeared them to Crockett? Probably not. Most likely he’d have shot them anyway. That’s what he did!

Crockett’s life came to an end in a famous finale: the Battle of the Alamo. In March 1836 Mexican troops breached the Alamo defences and killed all 200 defenders, Crockett included.

Some say he was the last man standing. If true that would have been a fitting way for him to have bowed out.

Crockett ’s fame lived on long after his death.

One hundred and eighteen years later a Walt Disney film and song by one Fess Parker made it fashionable for kids at the time to wear an animal on their heads. Every day 5,000

Crockett was often in the news. In 1835 he helped save America’s seventh President, Andrew Jackson’s life after a gunman tried to assassinate him.

Dressed in buckskin jacket and trousers he looked the part. But the coonskin hat didn’t do him any favours. Children asked why he was wearing a squirrel on his head. Still in the end it didn’t do his image any harm and he became known as “King of the Wild Frontier”.

Crockett:”Hi, Mr Bear.”

Bear: “Hello Funny Hat Man”.

Crockett:”I could do with a new fur coat.”

Bear:”Come on then if you think you’re hard enough.”

Crockett: You got big claws. Me got big gun.” BANG.

Historic Name Continues at the Helm of Little Theatre

Lady Walpole has taken over the presidency of Sheringham Little Theatre with the aim of seeing her famous family name reach a 50-year milestone as the figurehead of the arts venue.

Her late husband Lord Walpole died in May 2021, aged 82, after 48 years in the role.

Now his widow Laurel has succeeded him – ensuring the Walpoles, who have taken part in Norfolk public life since the time of Britain’s first Prime Minister Sir Robert 300 years ago, complete their half century leading and supporting the theatre.

Lady Walpole, whose role was approved at the theatre’s recent annual meeting, has been visiting the venue since she married Robin in 1980 and is delighted to carry on where he left off, saying the role would be an honour and pleasure.

“It is something we always did together – bringing the children to plays and pantos, and coming ourselves to see other events including the summer seasons. It is such a friendly place, the standard of productions are so high.

“I have been a theatre goer all my life, visiting the local theatre in Swindon as a child with my parents, enjoying student trips to Stratford, and going to ballet in London when I worked at the University of Reading.

The size and intimacy of the auditorium makes you feel really involved in live productions there – more so than big city theatres.“

Among her memories of the theatre are when it had no bar of its own – so the audience popped across the road to the Robin Hood pub for interval drinks and had to be summoned back by a theatre helper ringing a bell.

Robin was also instrumental in securing the services of West End farce legend Brian Rix for an earlier fundraising drive. He stayed at their home Mannington Hall overnight and “not being used to country life, brought his own hot water bottle!” she recalled.

Lady Walpole said while the Little Theatre was a “success story” it still needed financial help as it recovered from the Covid pandemic, and she would help the latest fundraising drive.

Collections in memory of Lord Walpole have raised around £1000 for Little Theatre funds.

He told the meeting that after three challenging Covid-hit years, the theatre, unlike some arts venues, had survived - but would be even more reliant on community support going forward, including new drives to find volunteers, sponsors, and fundraising opportunities.

The Pink Ladies’ Tractor Road Run Needs Your Stories

more than just money. We have always said and believed that. Behind every Pink Lady is a story. It may have everything to do with breast cancer or nothing at all, but whatever the motives, they have been strong enough to create a unique, emotional, special and enduring phenomenon.

“Over the last 18 years I have had the privilege of knowing those Pink Ladies who have suffered breast cancer. Many have survived, some have not. Their stories will always be with me.

The Pink Ladies’ Tractor Road Run has eyes on a new challenge – to produce a book charting the rise of the iconic event and the stories behind the women who take part.

“But there are stories I don’t know, and I hope that by bringing them together in a book, we can capture and share with others the indefinable magic of the Ladies’ Tractor Road Run. I am looking for the fun, the friendship, the crazy as well as the serious.

The first Pink Ladies Tractor Run set off in 2004 and to date the event has raised a staggering £812,000 for Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer appeal.

“The book, like the run, cannot happen without you so I am asking you to contribute your story. Why have you taken part? How big was the challenge? What has it meant to you, your family and your friends?

Organised by Annie Chapman BEM, the run annually sees more than 100 decorated tractors winding their way through Norfolk and north Suffolk.

“We would also welcome contributions from anyone who has helped, sponsored or supported this run in any way whatsoever! Relevant photographs would also be appreciated.

Each year money is raised by the ladies who take part in the event, money collected on the day from the thousands of supporters who gather along the route and donations and fundraising activities following the run.

Now the event is looking to produce a book to share the stories of the people who make it happen – the tractor drivers, marshals, sponsors, supporters and ! countless others.

Swimmers Michael Sayer and Noah Buchan each became multi county age group champions when the competition resumed for the first time in two years at the UEA pool in Norwich. Michael from Holt was three seconds ahead at the halfway point of the 200m Individual Medley. However, it was ironically Noah who pushed Michael all the way, but Michael held on well with his strong freestyle leg to finish in 3:22.98 as Noah touched over a second behind to become runner up in the 11-year age group category. Both boys were representing the North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club.

Michael then made it a clean sweep of all the backstroke events and was victorious for the second time in the 50m backstroke when he just out touched James O'Toole of the City of Norwich Club, with 41.27 from the 41.55 recorded by James and subsequently defeated no fewer than nineteen in his respective age group. If this was not enough, he added a third age group title when he again just crept ahead of James at the conclusion of the 100m in 1:31.02 and rounded off his backstroke events with the 200m finishing the 50m long course event in 3:13.69.

Michael Sayer Noah, from Beeston Regis, beat a field of sixteen in the 200m freestyle to finish in 2:49.65 - a clear margin of fifteen seconds from second placed James. It was freestyle again and gold again when Noah was the winner of the 400m in 6:12.19. He went on to be runner up in the 50m freestyle when he hit the pad in 36.27 just behind Josh Read also of the City of Norwich Club. In the 100m freestyle Noah swam very well by taking another second place only to see the score board reveal that it was again Michael Sayer who had won the event in 1:23.62 respectively to earn Michael his fifth gold medal of the championships.

Noah's elder brother Isaac won his 13 Years 400m freestyle in 5:13.51 Throughout the championships, Vikings won eight golds, five silvers and seven bronze medals.

Half of Omicron Grants Now Paid Out to North Norfolk Businesses

North Norfolk District Council have now paid nearly half of the Omicron Hospitality & Leisure Grant (OHLG) to all eligible business in North Norfolk

The OHLG was set up in early January to help businesses operating in the Hospitality, Leisure and Accommodation industries affected through the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, with each eligible business able to claim up to £6,000. North Norfolk was allocated over £8m, the largest for any authority in Norfolk, to support over 3,000 businesses in the sector, who continue to be affected by the economic impacts of COVID.

NNDC’s award winning Grants Team have now paid out £4.2m to 1,474 North Norfolk businesses – 52.3% of the Government allocation to 43.3% of eligible businesses in the district. It is expected the Council will

award grants over the total allocation of £8m, which will be funded by central Government, allowing the economic relief for more eligible businesses without the restriction.

As of 30 January, NNDC led national figures for paying out the most business grants in the whole country and ranked third for the total amount paid out, just behind Manchester City Council and City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Nearly 1,600 eligible businesses are still yet to apply for the grant, which has a cut-off date of Friday 18 March 2022, after which applications cannot be accepted. Payments will be made by 31st March, following the relevant fraud checks. Reminder emails have been sent to businesses encouraging them to apply.
