Queen’s Birthday Street Party

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

The Queen’s 90th Birthday is a truly national event and provides a great opportunity for us all to reflect on the extraordinary service Her Majesty has given the country for more than six decades.

Our community is coming together to honour The Queen with a Town Street Party on 11 June in the centre of Sheringham along Station Road & High Street down towards the beach. There will of course be lots of entertainment with The Street Party scheduled to start at 5pm. It is a great opportunity for all the town’s residents to meet and mingle and share in celebrating Her Majesty’s birthday. To add to the festive feeling it would be great if everyone could dress in patriotic red, white and blue to match the flags and bunting decorations set out by the Town Council and Carnival Committee.

About With Friends member Peter White doesn’t let his disability stop him from reaching for the sky and so on 29 June he will be walking in the air to raise money for the Cromer based charity.

Peter is going to do a Wingwalk in the skies over Gloucestershire when he will be strapped standing to the top wing of a biplane flown by an experienced member of The Flying Circus Aerosuperbatics team.

Peter, who works in the About With Friends’ Community Shop in Garden Street, Cromer every Tuesday and Thursday had already done parachute jumps to raise money for other charities and he decided he would like to help raise money towards a new minibus for the organisation which is well known in Norfolk.

As well as laying on a busy programme of social activities for children and adults, the charity also has a popular Workskills programme where more than 50 adults with a learning disability come to work on one or more days each week. This might be in the Community Café in Tucker Street, in the Catering or Gardening teams or in the Community team that provides lunch clubs for the over 55s and visits residents in Halsey House. Some members also make craft items and woodwork products, which are sold in the Community shop where Peter works.

Volunteering Open Morning in Cromer Voluntary Norfolk in conjunction with Merchants’ Place will be holding a Volunteering Open Morning on Saturday 4 June, 10am to 1pm as part of Volunteers Week. Crab Gnocchi

We had a great weekend at the annual Crab and Lobster Festival in May; two of our top chefs Lewis and Simon put on some excellent demonstrations using some of the finest seafood in the world to packed audiences. We are so lucky to have such incredible fresh ingredients on our doorstep and a big thank you to John Davies and the whole Festival team for putting on a wonderful event. Roll on next year!

2. Once cooked leave to cool for 5 – 10 minutes until easily handled. 3. Cut the potatoes in half and scrape the contents into a mixing bowl. 4. Add flour until you have a dough like consistency. 5. Add parsley, seasoning, egg yolk and mix through. 6. Add crab meat and lemon juice. 7. Portion dough out into quarters and roll out

This gnocchi wasn’t on our demonstration stall but it is a really tasty, slightly unusual dish to prepare and enjoy (perhaps with something chilled and dry…!) as you sit out in the garden this summer. Alternatively, put the cooking to one side and come and see us for dinner; 6 – 9pm every evening!

Classical Reflection at The Lighthouse Classical Reflection are appearing in concert at the beautiful, intimate Lighthouse Church, Sheringham on 11 June. They have achieved sell out concerts nationwide as well as appearing with soprano Rebecca Newman, Charlotte Jaconelli and Brit Award winners, Blake, who they will sing with at the Blickling proms later this year.

Classical Reflection are made up of Naomi and Hannah Moxon. Those of you who are avid watchers of the BBC1 programme, The Voice, will remember them as they stunned the nation with their amazing version of ‘Nella Fantasia’. They were quickly snapped up by Kaiser Chiefs lead singer, Ricky Wilson saying "you were too good for me not to turn". Rita Ora enthused "your voices are like clear water, you blew me away". 8

Tom Jones commented saying "you really moved me, I didn't want it to end".

Amazingly they received more than 2million views of their blind audition. Since The Voice they have captivated and mesmerised audiences nationwide with their pure angelic voices. They have had two songs composed for them by British number one composer Christopher Broom, and produced a Christmas CD and a debut album entitled ‘The Vow’, which will be available at the concert where they will sing some well-known songs from the album including, ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’ from Phantom Of The Opera and ‘Nella Fantasia’ from their blind audition, along with many other classical songs and West End Musicals. There will also be some special guest appearances including rising tenor star Sean Chriscole and a

Armed Forces Day Cromer 2016

The Royal British Legion has been running this event in Cromer for a number of years and it has become increasingly popular with visitors and residents.

We invite all ex service charities including Royal Naval Association, RAFA, REME, Gurkha Welfare Trust, SSAFA, Blind Veterans UK and local Royal British Legion branches, including Women’s Section.

This year we have invited members of the Queen’s Dragoon Guards. Service veterans spanning D Day 1944 until the present are available to talk about their experiences. A large display of militaria from the Crimea 1854 through the Zulu and Boer wars until The Great War will be on view, together with a collection of antique Britain’s toy soldiers ‘on parade’. A film about The Great War will be running during the exhibition, which is being held this year at the Parish Hall, Church Street, Cromer on 25 June, to be opened at 10am by Brig. Max Marrniner (Retd) in the presence of the Mayor of Cromer.

Summertime – and the music is jazzy Jazz is becoming the music for all seasons at a north Norfolk venue, as sessions are added to the summer programme for the first time.

Sheringham Little Theatre has been hosting jazz for many years during the autumn, winter and spring. And the current Jazz @ the Hub sessions are proving so popular they are being carried on through the peak summer months. Theatre director Debbie Thompson said the jazz regularly drew sell out 60-strong crowds to the Hub coffee bar.

“It is so well attended we did not want people to miss out in the summer, and we hope holidays also come and enjoy the sessions too,” she added. Organiser of the Jazz in the Hub sessions Vic Brown said the aim was to provide “melodic jazz standards” rather than trad or modern variants. Mr Brown and his wife Jean, from Trunch, scout jazz talent from across Norfolk and Suffolk for the Sheringham sessions. He praised the Hub venue where musicians were happy to play because they were “listened to by appreciative regulars.

Mr Brown is also a musician having learned drums at school, played in rock bands in London in the 1960s and resumed playing – and his love of jazz – on moving to Norfolk in the 1990s. He is the drummer in the Norfolk Jazz Quartet and says there is still a good following for jazz at Sheringham Independent 441

Sheringham at a time when other clubs were cutting down on their jazz nights.

An Evocative Evening of Celtic Music and Beyond in Sheringham

StringFilles are a trio bringing an evening of well-loved songs and tunes and lesser known gems from the Celtic and Gaelic traditions to Sheringham Little Theatre on Saturday 11 June at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm, tickets £10 Box Office 01263 822347).

They will offer a unique opportunity for all music lovers to enjoy a rich range of compositions, which have been arranged especially by them for the Sheringham concert.

StringFillies have been playing together for several years and launched officially at Folk East Festival last year. Their fascinating programme will include arrangements of tunes by celebrated Irish harpist O'Carolan, and tunes from the Scottish Isles including ‘The Burning of The Piper's Hut’, ‘Lure of the Sea Maidens’, and ‘Calling the Cattle to Kinsale’. Songs will include versions of ‘Green Hollin’, ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ and ‘Once I Had a Sweetheart’.

Norfolk and Norwich Open Studios

For two weeks every May/June, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios celebrates the county’s artists and their creativity by offering them the opportunity to open their doors to the public to exhibit, sell, and talk about their work. It gives visitors the chance to experience new art, meet artists, and to buy original artworks directly from their creators.

North Norfolk Organisation for Visual Artists (NOVA) was formed in 2000 as a liaison group between the Open Studios organisation and the artists of North Norfolk, thus it's title. Membership is continually rising and is currently in excess of 60 artists, covering most if not all mediums.

‘Middle of NovaWhere’ is a collective of artists from the North Norfolk Organisation of Visual Artists (NOVA). For 2016 they have set up a group exhibition as part of the Open Studios event, in the wonderful setting of Thorpe Market Church, to give visitors the chance to experience a diverse amount of talent in one location.

Often the artists have little space to show people around their own studios and as a solitary artist they find the two weeks of ‘NovaWhere’ Open Studios a great opportunity to be inspired by their co-exhibitors, or by the setting in which they show their work.

Payment of a brother’s private school fees held to be in ‘best interests’ of his sister Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

In the case of David Ross v A [2015] a girl (called ‘A’ in the case) had been brain-damaged after birth as a result of medical negligence. The parents settled for an award of £5 million. A professional person was appointed by the Court of Protection (‘the Court’) to manage A’s finances (known as the ‘Deputy’ – ‘D’). He spoke warmly of the excellent care that A’s parents gave her at home. D approved various payments out of A’s award, including the costs of adapting the family home. D thought that external care packages would have been much more expensive and much less good.

A’s brother (‘B’) inevitably suffered as a result of his sister’s condition and had problems at his primary school and failed to get a place at the selective state senior school of his choice. B was described as having great potential to achieve with the right education.

D, at the request of the family, made an application to the Court to authorise the payment of private school fees for B out of A’s award. The application was lost in the Court system for nearly 2 years and, in that intervening period, D paid B’s school fees out of A’s fund, in the hope that the Court would retrospectively authorise the expenditure.

The Official Solicitor (“OS”) was appointed to represent A’s interests and opposed the application. He claimed repayment of the school fees that had already been paid.

The OS argued that A had never assumed the financial responsibility and was not responsible for causing harm to her brother, as a result of her condition. The OS argued that D had to represent the interests of A only, and not B’s and the wider family.

Senior Judge Lush allowed D’s application for the payment of B’s school fees and castigated the OS for his “unnecessary intrusive and hostile approach”. Judge Lush criticised the “microscopic scrutiny” by OS of D’s expenditure and the OS’s condemnation of the family’s dependence on the award. Judge Lush said that the family were dependent on A’s award in the same way as A was dependent upon her family for care and said that “it was insensitive and demeaning to stigmatise them for deciding to sacrifice their own careers and earning-potential by staying at home and caring for their profoundly disabled child on a full-time basis.”

Judge Lush noted a range of factors. These included that the family were living well within the awarded sum, which had in fact grown in size. It would continue to be sustainable, even with the payment of school fees. Mutual dependency was inevitable and B’s needs were important. If the parents went back to work and paid for external carers it would have more than

doubled the family’s outgoings. Judge Lush said that the OS’s approach was “unnecessarily cautious, paternalistic and risk-averse and would have the effect of stifling the family’s hopes and aspirations”.

A’s ‘best interests’ (as defined by the Mental Capacity Act) were difficult to determine, but the views of the parents and D were considered important. I have sent an email to Highways Department complaining about this, and saying that some people take a pride in their town and don’t like to see shoddy work carried out at the expense of the tax payer, but to date have not had the courtesy of a reply.

Travel Back in Time On the afternoon of Saturday 14 May, the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre and Peter Coke Shell Gallery travelled back in time, hosting the following activities as part of the North Norfolk Stories Festival. Fishermen’s Heritage Centre - in the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre the Hon. Charlotte Upcher was on hand to engage visitors about her reasons for commissioning Sheringham’s first lifeboat, the Augusta, in 1838 and Mrs Caroline Upcher (Charlotte’s daughter-in-law) talked about the famous second lifeboat - the Henry Ramey Upcher, in service from 1894 to 1935. Visitors also learned about how the lifeboats were launched, the brave fishermen who manned them and their rescues. Although the wind was particularly strong and cold on the afternoon and blowing right into the Fishermen’s Heritage Centre, visitors were very appreciative of the event. Comments included “very interesting and informative” and “we loved the costumed

characters”.

Peter Coke Shell Gallery - in the Peter Coke Shell Gallery three 19th C sailors enthralled people, talking how they spent their idle hours aboard their ships crafting ‘Sailor Valentines’ out of small seashells for their loved ones, whereas in reality stopping off in the West Indies they purchased a Valentine and pretended to their loved ones they had made it! Children also had the opportunity to help create a large-scale Sailor Valentine with real shells and/or colour in their own smaller Valentine. Mike Crowe, who was a committee member for Sheringham Carnival and has been involved in many activities within the community since 1976, presented an illustrated talk on the history of Sheringham Carnival on 4 May, the second part of a talk he began in July 2015.

The first regatta was in 1877 and by 1887 the Eastern and Midland Railway was bringing many people from London to Sheringham. Visitors saw lifeboat and sailing races as well as a pig hunt at sea?

In Part 2 of the talk, Mr. Crowe again emphasised that Sheringham had a long history of regattas and carnivals. He hopes to write a book about the history based on research and his work with the carnival while living here. There were too many facts and incidents to mention. In 1967 the town had the biggest carnival in Norfolk with over 50 floats and the boat race was from Sheringham to Cromer.

The Town Clock was often decorated, once with two squeezed up cars in front with a pink elephant on top of the clock. This was in protest about the building of a multi-storey car park similar to news items in recent years with parking issues and an elephant found on a beach nearby.

Mike only has good memories of living in Sheringham and it seems the feelings are mutual.

He has now moved to Oswestry by a canal - probably to get some rest!

RNLI museum volunteers praised as heritage heroes in prestigious national industry awards

A team of RNLI museum volunteers have been hailed as heritage heroes after receiving a prestigious award in an awards ceremony dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the museums and heritage sector

He said ‘The RNLI’s group of volunteers more than stepped up to the plate and went the extra mile in difficult circumstances, so I’m delighted to present them with this award to recognise their commitment, enthusiasm and hard work.’

The group of volunteers at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer were named ‘Volunteers of the Year’ in the national Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence awards, for their tireless efforts to promote the visitor attraction and bring history to life for its annual 45,000+ visitors.

The accolade is awarded by industry body, The Museums and Heritage Show, which organises a major annual show for professionals working in the museum sector. Now celebrating its fourteenth year, the annual awards recognise the innovators and leaders of the UK and Europe’s diverse museums, galleries and visitor attractions.

The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum illustrates the history of Cromer's lifeboats and explores the legacy of the eponymous hero who, for 37 years, served as coxswain at Cromer RNLI and helped save 873 lives. The volunteers were nominated by Katie Smith, RNLI Heritage Engagement Manager.

Four members of the wider volunteer team were presented with the award by comedian and TV personality Marcus Brigstocke in a ceremony in central London on 18 May.

Katie said “During 2015, the Museum Manager needed a substantial amount of time off for personal reasons, which obviously had the potential to impact on the smooth running

The award has wider implications for the RNLI, as it recognises the charity’s overall commitment to provide excellent visitor experience at its sites and recognises the achievements of the charity’s volunteers at a national level.

Victor Brett, Volunteer Shop Manager at the museum, said ‘We may have taken on extra duties but we were happy to do so, as the entire team takes huge pride in what we do and in bringing the RNLI’s history to life. Winning the award was a nice bonus and recognition of our team’s efforts.’

The award for the volunteers at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum coincides with an appeal for more volunteers to join the award winning team.

Norfolk Greyhound Rescue are appealing for people to adopt unwanted racing greyhounds and are particularly seeking those wonderful souls who feel able to offer foster homes to these gentle creatures.

Their aim is to transport greyhounds from Ireland, where many of these hounds are bred. Whether they have raced or not, many end up unwanted and at serious risk. Unlike some charities, NGR pride themselves on the fact that everything is volunteer-led and nobody in the organisation takes payment for their efforts. They genuinely do it for our love of the hounds!

NGR is also happy to be hosting the Cromer ‘leg’ of the Great Global Greyhound Walk on Sunday 19 June, starting at Runton Rd Car Park at 10.30am and walking the Promenade and Pier. This event takes place all over the UK and also abroad, when thousands of greyhounds are walked to raise awareness of greyhounds as lovely pets. Please pick up your dog’s waste – message from school children

‘Poosters’ formally unveiled at North Norfolk schools Young people across North Norfolk have been turning their hand to designing posters urging people to clean up after their dogs.

The ‘dog poosters’ have been created by children at Little Snoring Primary, Neatishead Primary, North Walsham Junior, Millfield Primary in North Walsham and Sheringham Primary.

They highlight the dangers of disease spread by dog fouling, encourage people to bag and bin their dog’s mess and point out the law governing the clearing up of dog waste. The work has been turned into small posters to be put up around schools, larger A2 boards to be put up in the vicinity of schools and signage for some of the district’s bin collection lorries. Each school produced three winning designs. From those 15 designs, three were chosen to create the lorry signage.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “The majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs, but there are some owners still acting in an irresponsible way, leaving their dog’s waste as a health risk and nuisance to others. “We hope these wonderful posters made by young people who care about their local communities encourage those irresponsible dog owners to bag up their pet’s mess and put it in a bin.” Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for North Norfolk District Council’s Environmental Services visited schools last month to present winners with a professionally printed version of their poster.

Retired bank manager is Rotary President for second time Brother elected Vice-President

Roger Hill, former TSB bank manager in Cromer and Rotary President 14 years ago, has become President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club for the second time.

He succeeds Debz Conisbee, who has left for the United States prior to undertaking missionary work In Cambodia. At the Roger Hill (right) with brother Alan handover, former police Divisional Commander (Superintendent) Alan Hill, Roger’s brother, was elected Vice-President.

Roger (76) was born in Colchester and attended Colchester Royal Grammar School before joining the Trustee Savings Bank in 1956. After service with the bank in Colchester and Mildenhall, he moved to become manager of the Cromer branch in 1974. He joined Round Table locally in 1975 and then Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club in 1981. Since first becoming President in 2002, he has served on various committees, including several years as Treasurer.

Since retiring he has worked as a bookeeper and, with this expertise, has been very active in the community in Cromer. He has, at various times, been Treasurer of Cromer Lifeboat Station, Cromer Chamber of Trade and Cromer VEO (the Carnival organisation). He joined Cromer Sea Scouts in 1975, becoming Group Leader for 10 years. He is still District Treasurer for the North East Scouts Council. For his work locally and within Rotary, he was awarded the coveted Paul Harris Fellowship. He and his wife Mary celebrate their Golden Wedding this year.

Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge Celebrations

Celebrations took place recently for the 50th Anniversary of the consecration of the Old Pastonian Masonic Lodge. The event, which was marked by a White Table event attended by over 80 members, friends and family, took place at St Giles in Norwich. The Lodge was founded in 1966, and was closely linked to the Paston Grammar School, North Walsham. In recent years it has opened its membership to those with no previous connection to the school, which became a college in 1984 following the merger of the Paston Grammar School with the Officers of the Old Pastonian Lodge North Walsham Girls High at their celebratory evening School. Steve Baker (pictured centre) is the current Master of the Lodge, and said that the event was notable for a number of reasons “My father was one of the founding members back in 1966, so to be able to mark the occasion was also a tribute to those involved in the forming of that lodge at that time. Having the celebration also provided an opportu-

nity to reminds us of the role of freemasonry in the local community by enjoying historic ceremony, and engaging with local and national organisations and charities, to help those in need.”

Although one of Norfolk’s younger lodges, it is one of 76 in the county, the oldest having met continuously in Norwich since 1736.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY WORLD CHAMPION PICKLED QUAILS EGGS

On 12 May members of the Society enjoyed an exclusive evening visit to Edgefield Nursery - our thanks to Garry for his hospitality which included coffee and cakes. On the following Thursday the proprietors of Ollands Farm Foods came to Sheringham to talk about their company which produces fine handmade preserves from their own purpose built kitchen for sale at local markets and online.

The products are made in small batches using the best ingredients, locally sourced wherever possible, and include jams, savoury preserves such as Redcurrant Jelly (from their own fruit), Beetroot and Orange Chutney , Rhubarb and Fig Relish and Piccalilli and also the pickled quails eggs which won the world championship in 2014. All their products were available at the meeting for tasting and for members to purchase.

The information and advice given was of great use to members in dealing with the produce from their own gardens and allotments and making the best use of gluts of fruit and vegetables.

Norfolk Dealer Raises ÂŁ12,000 for ParalympicsGB

A North Norfolk Nissan dealership has raised more than £12,000 for the British Paralympic Association in support of the carmaker’s role as Official Automotive Partner of ParalympicsGB.

Crayford and Abbs Nissan in Gypsies Lane, Holt, generated the cash through a series of fundraisers helping to supercharge ParalympicsGB’s assault on the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The charity dinner featured an inspiring talk by Duncan Slater an injured ex-serviceman who walked to the South Pole with Prince Harry and had just returned from running six marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert for the charity Walking With the Wounded. The Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, Colonel Jamie Athill Rtd, also attended and gave the introductory speech.

First, staff, friends and customers of the dealership cycled, swam and ran almost 12,000 miles – the distance from North Norfolk to Rio and back – raising almost £6,000. They also completed a six-and-a-half hour cross trainer marathon at a nearby supermarket in Cromer.

Then, on Saturday evening, a black tie charity dinner and auction at the Links Hotel, West Runton, gave the coffers a further boost, taking the grand total beyond the ÂŁ10,000 mark.

Guests at the dinner were also thanked for their support in video messages recorded by two-time Paralympian and Nissan ambassador, Stef Reid, and James Wright, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB).

In her message, Stef Reid, a silver medallist in the long jump at London 2012, said “Thanks to all of you and to Crayford and Abbs for your fundraising efforts,

Laser treatment of excessive underarm sweating

Until now, there were very few long-term solutions for treating excessive underarm sweating.

Surgical treatments include removal of sweat glands, which could be associated with complications. Any surgery can be associated with prolonged recovery time and issues with healing and scarring. Other treatment operations involve interrupting major nerves inside the thorax. This operation was often associated with unacceptable complications, and is rarely performed.

Now there is a minimally invasive quick solution for long-term reduction of excessive underarm sweating. Lasers have revolutionized all areas of medicine and surgery. Now we have a minimally invasive laser procedure, to selectively destroy the sweat glands without requiring incisions.

So how is laser sweat reduction performed? This is performed purely under a local anaesthetic. A special test is used to delineate and mark the overactive sweat glands. A solution of anaesthetic is used to numb the areas of excessive sweating. When the area has been numbed up, a tiny laser fiber is introduced under the skin and the laser is activated. The laser energy destroys the sweat glands without causing any damage to the surrounding tissues. In some cases, a tiny hollow tube is introduced and the destroyed sweat glands are easily sucked out. The procedure only takes about one hour.

What is the recovery like? Most patients are back to normal within 48 hours. There can be a minor degree of swelling and discomfort. Generally, the procedure is very well tolerated with reduction in sweating of up to 70 to 80%. Patients who had the procedure comment that first time in years they have been able to wear T-shirts without having to change them regularly.

‘George the Second’ donates to Cromer RNLI Last month Cromer RNLI had an unusual request regarding a bequest of a Swaffham man who died in March.

George Atkinson was keen that money be donated to Cromer RNLI. Relatives of the gentleman, affectionately known as ‘George the Second’, contacted the station to inform them that George had died just two weeks before his 105th birthday.

Despite more than 90 years of attempts, the 104-year-old had never backed a winner at the Grand National. He had once again hoped to turn his luck around when he planned to place a bet on his 105th birthday in February 2016.

George had led a very full life, serving in the forces during the Ssecond World War. These experiences had given him a long respect and interest for the RNLI and George was always keen to hear about the work carried out at Cromer’s lifeboat station. Members of the crew had visited him in his home to talk about recent launches.

George’s grandson in law Barry Willett, visited the station to present a cheque to Cromer RNLI. Barry said ‘George was an inspiration to everyone and always had a positive outlook on life. Until last year George was to be found at his local supermarket on his mobility scooter collecting money for the RNLI. We have now carried out his last request that this wonderful organisation should benefit.’ 22

If you love singing, you’ll love this! Invidia Voices - Rock & Soul Choir have a brand new rehearsal group starting 22nd June in West Runton. But don’t worry if you think you can’t sing because they are kicking off with a singing workshop for beginners to prove that anyone can have fun singing, no matter how bad they think they are!

Founded in 2013 by husband and wife team Matt and Alex Emmerson, Invidia Voices has fast become one of Norfolk’s largest vocal groups growing to over 300 members in just a few years. With rehearsal groups available in North Walsham, Norwich, Acle, Great Yarmouth, Wymondham and now West Runton, Invidia owes its popularity to it’s fun and easy going approach to singing, but Matt says “the best thing about this choir is our members. I’ve never met such a lovely, friendly and supportive bunch of people!” He went on to explain “There's no audition required and no need for any musical background, just a love of singing.

Up Pompeii

If you are looking to find some saucily clad women, hilarious twists and turns, great comedy lines, fantastic costumes and erupting scenery this summer, look no further than The Sheringham Players summer production of Up Pompeii at Sheringham Little Theatre (Thursday 15 and Saturday 18 June. The expected popularity and demand for the show has necessitated an additional matinee performance on Saturday. Tickets are already selling very well, and the show looks to be another series of sell out performances for this very popular local group.

The play, written by Miles Tredinnick is based on the original characters devised by Talbot Rothwell and Sid Colin for the Frankie Howard BBC comedy. This hilarious romp through ancient Pompeii brings back all the television favourites in this full-length play, and as Lurcio attempts to deliver his prologue and begin proceedings, he is quickly caught up in the myriad of sexual liaisons in all quarters of his master's house. Why does Ludicrus not leave for the Senate meeting in Rome? Why does his wife return so quickly from the country? Who will take care of the escaped slave girl, Voluptua, and will Nausius's love poetry improve? Whilst growing chaos ensues, an increasing rumbling is heard in the distance – what could that possibly be? A riot from start to finish.

Sheringham Players are already working on their autumn production for November, ‘The Great Escape - from a Residential Home’ written by Andy Powrie, and based on the film staring Steve McQueen, but with an unusual hilarious twist. Briston once again welcomed top Japanese organ and keyboard star Chiho Sunamoto to the Copeman Centre on Friday 6 May.

This very popular artist, who has played all over the world, is a great favourite with the crowds up here in North Norfolk, and this return visit packed the hall to capacity!

Using her yamaha EL900 organ and Tyros keyboard, she played such gems as ‘Also Sprach Zarathrusta’ - the theme from the film ‘2001’, some uncannily authentic Glenn Miller numbers, the full theme from the film ‘Star Wars’, some punchy latin numbers and big band 26

swing classics, the overture from ‘Die Fledermaus’, and music from ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’.

As well as playing, she sang several numbers too, and also introduced her friend Jon Smith, who also obliged with some excellent vocals, and played the lead lines on several numbers using a Melodica - a bit like an overgrown harmonica with a small built in piano-style keyboard.

The audience roared their approval, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole performance, which concluded with Chiho and Jon’s

Kelling Probus Club May Meeting

The above Club held its May meeting on 19 May at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham .

After the usual tasty meal and a chance to catch up with other members, we were entertained and informed by an interesting talk by Jason Bell. Jason has been Town Crier for Cromer for the past 32 years and told the Club that he first entered a competition run by the Carnival Committee designed to find a Town Crier - he has been in this job ever since. Most of his work is voluntary, although he is available for hire at special occasions such as weddings and special birthdays. His main event each year is the town Carnival and despite having done it for 32 years, he still manages to walk round the carnival route with the annual procession in his full robes.

Jason recounted lots of the tasks he has done over the years, and particularly enjoys the Town Crier competitions which are held all over Britain and Europe. He has many fond memories of the European competition in Cromer, and other events attended by himself and his wife, who has won several competitions for 'best dressed consort'.

Jason stressed that at all these public occasions his work promoted Cromer as a town and resort.He then answered several questions from members about the origins and dress of Town Criers. He was thanked for his talk by Clive Mitchell.

Kelling Probus Club is an organization for retired or semi retired males. It only meets on 3rd Thursday of each month for a good but not expensive lunch, followed by a speaker. CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

For many, a world cruise is the fulfilment of a dream as they approach retirement after a lifetime of work.

The speaker at the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club’s May lunch meeting, however, has already ‘been there, done that’ frequently.

Captain Albert Schoonderbeek commands cruise ships around the world and recounted vividly, and very amusingly, some of the many trips he has undertaken.

From Antarctica in the south, to the Arctic in the north, and all the oceans and islands in between, Captain Schoonderbeek made us very aware of the scale that cruising has become in the past 30 years or so, and it continues to grow.

A lifetime at sea naturally produces many anecdotes and clearly not everything is ‘plain sailing’. The rapid expansion of communications has great benefits but so dependent on technology have we become that, for some passengers, losing a mobile phone signal at sea in the Arctic Ocean almost leads to a minor mutiny! Friends and family at home, trying to contact passengers, fear the cruise liner may have sunk.

The 75 members and their lady guests were greatly appreciative of the Captain’s rich sense of humour and Malcolm Poore, on behalf of all those present, gave a well-deserved vote of thanks.

The next meeting of the Club is the AGM on Tuesday 7 June following the lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton.

High profile Christians to speak at Sheringham church

Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham has lined up a series of nationally-known speakers to lead its “Stir 16” series of Sunday evenings this summer.

The series starts on Sunday 12 June when Rob and Marion White will be the speakers. They are senior leaders at Life Church in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Rob & Marion have been in some form of local, national & international leadership for many years. In their professional lives, Rob was Buyer/ Manager of one of South London’s largest Perfumery Departments, and Marion was a trained teacher. They have pioneered a number of organisations, the latest of which is Hope for Justice, one of the only organisations involved in the rescue of trafficked people here in the UK, which they co-founded with Ben & Deb Cooley in 2008. They are in demand as public speakers and have co-written one book, My Family, My Church.

Lighthouse Pastor, Ian Savory, said “We are asking God to build faith among us for what He can do in North Norfolk and beyond. It is good to hear people telling their story and sharing their perspective on what God is doing in our day and in their area of influence”.

On Sunday 10 July, Brian Heasley will be speaking. Brian is national director of 24-7 Prayer in Great Britain after leading 24-7 Ibiza, and has been part of the prayer movement since it began. Brian is a gifted communicator with passion for prayer, mission and justice. He is married to Tracy and has two teenage sons. The family live in Norfolk and are involved in a Christian community there. Brian’s other passions are Liverpool football club, tapas and photography. He has also written a book about 24-7 Ibiza called 'Gatecrashing'.

Paul and Priscilla Reid from Belfast Christian Fellowship Church will be speaking at Lighthouse on Sunday 7 August, with Roy and Floss Crowne, from Hope Together, concluding the Stir 16 series on Sunday 4 September. The evenings all start at 7pm, with coffee available from 6.30pm.

We are pleased to report that £528 was raised by ticket sales at our Fashion Show and this has been sent to M & Co in Cromer for Cancer Research UK.

The raffle raised £107 for our general funds and we are grateful to everyone who helped to make this event such a success. We were delighted to have male models and children to show the clothes this time, and we hope to have another event later in the year.

Our 10 May meeting welcomed Paul Graves and his daughter who gave us such an entertaining evening, telling us how the business was started many years ago by his grandfather and has been in operation for over 50 years, passing through the family.

Paul now takes his famous hog roasts to many important events in Norfolk and invited us to visit his farm in Briston to see how the business operates.

They brought a wonderful selection of their home grown meats and we were able to purchase these - how lucky we are to have this hard working family on our doorstep with their excellent produce readily available for us to purchase.

End of Season Roundup

Norwich City endured a season of what could have been. They missed out on plenty of opportunities to gain points throughout the season and have ultimately come up short, finishing in 19th place along with Aston Villa and Newcastle. There were a few games in particular that had large contributions in Norwich’s downfall - the first of which being a 6-2 loss against Newcastle away in mid-October. I believe this was pivotal as it was our first major loss of the season in terms of the amount of goals we conceded. I believe this really psychologically damaged the teams spirit going into the rest of the season. Another key game that contributed to the relegation of Norwich was in late January when they fell to a 5-4 loss at home to Liverpool, I feel as though this game was the one that changed the season of Norwich the most, this was due to the weird nature of the game and how intense it felt throughout. Norwich were 3-1 up by the 54th minute and allowed Liverpool to lead through conceding

three goals in the space of 20 minutes. Everyone thought that Norwich had salvaged a point after Bassong scored a wonderful goal in stoppage time, to eventually have all their work undone by Lallana crushing the hearts of 25,000 plus fans inside Carrow Road. I feel that this result demoralised Norwich so much as it came at a point where Norwich could have and should have picked up three points after a poor run of games. Overall Norwich could not handle with the quality of the Premier League due to still having a very similar squad to the one that was previously relegated in 2014. This is why Norwich City needs to have a summer of transition and an overhaul in the boardroom as well as with the playing staff. Norwich have already made progress by acking David McNally and they need to stop being sentimental with players if they want to progress as a club and turn into a secure and stable Premier League side rather than being a yo-yo club.

Residents of Heydon are inviting visitors to stop and smell the roses this Father’s Day, Sunday 19 June, and to explore the gardens of Heydon Hall – which are rarely open to the public – plus a variety of gardens in their historic, picturesque village.

Charles Shippam - PCC Treasurer, Heydon (Parish) and village resident - explained“Heydon Hall and Village Open Gardens Day provides a wonderful opportunity for visitors to discover one of the prettiest villages in Norfolk and take a stroll through the gardens of Heydon Hall, The Grange, The Old Rectory, The Old Cottage, Poppyland, and others. There will also be a display by North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club, entertainment by Holt Ridge Morris dancers, a plant stall, and refreshments on the village green.” He added “Heydon is one of less than a dozen privately owned villages in Great Britain and became Norfolk's first conservation area in 1971. Heydon is also currently home to six County Wildlife Sites; has won Best Kept Village on two occasions and has been the setting of numerous film and TV productions.”

Heydon Hall and Village Open Gardens Day will take place on Sunday 19 June between 2pm and 5pm. Admission to the Heydon Hall gardens costs £3 per person and entry to the Heydon village gardens costs an additional £3 per person – however, there is no admission charge for children 14 years and under. Car parking is also free. Dogs on leads are welcome in Heydon Hall Park. Admission tickets can be purchased on the day at the main gates to Heydon Hall and on Heydon village green.

Heydon is situated 15 miles north west of Norwich, off the B1149 Norwich to Holt road (NR11 6AD).

Cycling Land’s End to John O’Groats for Help the Heroes James Daintree from Aylmerton is cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Help for Heroes.

James served in the Royal Navy for over 10 years and spent most of his time on board the HMS Gloucester but also served alongside the Royal Marines at RNAS Yeovilton. During his service, he completed tours in various countries including the Falklands, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan. His brother served in the RAF and both his parents and uncle in the Army. Having experienced war zones and their effect on people first hand, James chose to support the charity Help for Heroes for his cycle ride.

He will start from Land’s End on 30 August and finish in John O’Groats on 11 September covering a distance of approximately 1000 miles over 12 days. He has been training for the event for about a year and has lost around four stone in weight! Prior to the event, James will be aiming to cycle 200 miles on his trainer

‘Lots’ of Promises to Keep Walking There is a great chance to bid for all sorts of items on offer at the North Norfolk Fit Together Auction of Promises at Gresham Village Hall on the evening of 4 June, 6.30pm registration for a 7pm start.

Businesses and individuals from all over north Norfolk have contributed, from a sponge cake you can secretly enjoy on your own through to afternoon tea on the terrace of the House of Commons with local MP Norman Lamb. Afternoon out at various venues, vouchers from local supermarkets, a day trip on the Broads and brewery tours are all amongst the lots in the catalogue. Top photographer David Morris has contributed a signed print, which would grace the wall of any home or business. Chairman John Tomlinson and Walks Co-Ordinator Mel Brown show off the picture in our photo. Fit Together is a registered charity that grew out of the Active Norfolk programme, once reliant on funding from District and County Councils but now responsible for its own fund-raising. Regular and supported health walks across the region are the most popular part of the programme. Also offered are other physical activities aimed at improving health including tea dances, circuit training for the older person, badminton and line dancing. However, for the auction you will be able to be reasonably sedentary – though hopefully with a lot of raising of the arm to indicate you would like to bid for one of the promises!
