The grant fund, administered by Historic England, would allow North Walsham to restore the town centre’s historic character with a particular focus on Market Place and its adjoining roads. The plans have been created through a strong local partnership and will complement the planned improvements to St Nicholas Court precinct, which was recently awarded £100,000 through the NNDC Market Town Initiative.

It is hoped that Historic England funding would support town centre regeneration by improving accessibility, highlighting the town’s heritage and encouraging cultural activities.

A decision on the bid is anticipated in the autumn. If successful, a programme design phase would follow, entailing further community engagement and consultation preceding the formal start of the project in April 2021.

Cllr Virginia Gay, member for North Walsham Market Cross and NNDC Portfolio Holder for Culture & Wellbeing, said “Our hope is that North Walsham will benefit both economically and culturally, welcoming local residents, the surrounding communities and visitors alike. Pupils from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham have been busy working in and around their community this term.

The children in Reception Class took on the ‘Superhero Challenge’ where they made a list of different jobs they could do to help others including walking the dog, washing the car, helping with the shopping and tidying their rooms - which was very much appreciated by their parents!

Follow our Activities

Year 6 pupils went a step further and went out into the community and picked up litter in the Memorial Park for an afternoon.

Also pupils from years 1 and 2 did their part by taking a trip to Mundesley Beach to pick up litter.

Various excursions into the community is an activity that the children are very proud of. They regularly visit residential care homes and help with other projects in the community. They all felt a real sense of achievement and will keep it going next year.

Abuse and loneliness

As I head off to London for the annual Solicitors for the Elderly (SfE) national conference I am reminded about the real world background to some of the legal work that I do.

This year one of the six seminars covers the hot topic of elder victims of fraud and abuse, including that arising within the family.

Another seminar covers the role of the solicitor as an important safeguard in managing finances. The Master of the Court of Protection will talk on whether abuse of the elderly could be considered as a ‘hate crime’, with all the stringent penalties that follow. The relationship of family dynamics and abuse of the elderly and how longstanding unresolved conflict, identity and roles of family members, mental health and financial circumstances may influence how an elderly person is treated. We will learn how to identify these ‘red flags’ and what can be done to protect the elderly.

The NHS website states that according to Age UK more than 2 million people over age 75 live alone and more than a million older people say that they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour and family member. People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons, such as getting older or weaker, no

longer being the hub of their family, leaving the work place, the death of spouses or friends, or through disability or illness.

Whatever the cause, it’s shockingly easy to be left feeling alone and vulnerable, which can lead to depression and a serious decline in physical health and wellbeing.

The idea that technological advances will be able to replace human-interaction has a scarily science fiction quality to it; ticking (or should that be clicking?) boxes, rather than holding hands.

Wells-next-the-Sea is lucky to have Heritage House providing day care for those living in Wells and the surrounding area. The visitors receive a home-cooked two course lunch, the option of a bath and hairdressing, access to a wide-range of public sector agencies support and NHS services, activities including singing, seated-exercise and the garden, and for many most importantly, companionship.

Volunteers are always needed and are fundamental to the running of Heritage House. They drive and assist on the minibuses, help in the garden and, simply, but most valuably, spend time and interact with the day visitors.

a significant proportion of a very vulnerable sector of our population, i.e. the elderly, has been somewhat forgotten as needing special support. In some circles the elderly are even seen as privileged, compared with young people; perhaps this is not unreasonable when looking at the cost of housing.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Information that could Save Your Life

This was the message that the RNLI Community Safety Team along with Norfolk Fire Service, Norfolk Police Broads Beat, HM Coastguard, Hemsby and Sea Palling Lifeboats and Lowland Rescue delivered at Richardsons Boat Yard, Stalham for their Norfolk Day event held on Saturday 27 July.

The RNLI Community Safety Team, with all the other organisations, were giving out information that could save your life when around water. The aim was not to stop people from having fun in the water but to do it in a safe way. It has been heart breaking to hear of the number of deaths from drowning in the past few days.

So all the agencies were giving out the same message.

On the beach always swim where there are Lifeguards on duty; if this is not possible then never swim by yourself, always have someone

on the beach who has a mobile phone or other means of getting help. If people are in trouble call 999 and ask for the Coastguard who will get help to you.

Near inland waterways the advice is to not jump into these as you are not aware of what is under the water, i.e. weeds metal objects, posts or how deep the water is and how strong the currents are. Again, if you see anyone in trouble then call 999 and ask for the Coastguard as they know where all the resources are that can get to you quickly, as well as Fire, Police and Ambulance.

At 17.38 hrs on Sunday 28th July 2019 the Sheringham Lifeboat was tasked by Humber Coastguard to assist local coastguards in their efforts to release a person trapped in a rock groyne on Sheringham east beach.

The casualty had been swimming with his children but when leaving the sea just after high water via the steps near the rock groyne he was knocked off the steps by a heavy swell as he helped the children up the steps. The casualty fell off the steps and got his foot caught between the large rocks. His friends whilst protecting him from the waves called the lifeguards who stayed in the water with the casualty whilst the Coastguards were called who then called the Lifeboat & other emergency services to assist.

The sun shone on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year so far, luckily there were several parasols to spread a little shade on the patio and lots of lovely refreshments to keep members going. We also had a raffle, to boost club funds, with a good variety of prizes donated by members plus a gift token donated by Waitrose.

Cinema in the Park

Two singalong movies are being screened at free events in North Walsham this month - with a bucket collection helping charity.

Cinema in the Park, now in its 2nd year, will show Mamma Mia and The Greatest Showman on Friday and Saturday August 16 and 17.

Entry to the event on North Walsham Memorial Park is free, but donations will be shared between North Walsham Play, who has provided £210,00 worth of equipment at 2 of the town’s parks and Kitale School Uganda, an African educational charity supported by local businessman Rob Scammell through a fundraising shop in the towns precinct.

Last year we raised money for a local family to help their daughter who is in Kidney failure. The night was so successful it was enjoyed by around 600 people. Norfolk’s 2019 Heritage Open Days festival brochure is launched at historic Marble Hall

This year’s Heritage Open Days (HODs) festival brochure with ten unmissable days of free tours, talks, walks, open days, exhibitions, performances and shows planned across Norfolk was launched last month.

Heritage champions, local dignitaries and festival organisers gathered at Marble Hall for the launch – with the historic home of Aviva at Surrey House one of the many venues opening its doors for tours throughout the festival.

HODs is England’s largest festival of history and culture and this year marks the 25th anniversary, with a special ‘People Power’ theme being celebrated across many events. The theme demonstrates the influence groups and individuals have had over history to bring about positive change in their communities – and in Norfolk events include a new Kett’s Rebellion Tour, a display on the Burston School Strike and a guided story of Edith Cavell.

This year’s festival takes place from Friday 13 September to Sunday 22 September, with more than 350 events lined-up in Norwich and across Norfolk.

The festival brochure is available to pick up now from The Forum in Norwich as well as Tourist Information Centres, libraries and venues across the county and electronically at www.theforumnorwich.co.uk/hods.

All festival events are free to attend with many available for visitors to drop-in on the day unless indicated otherwise in the festival brochure.

• Sign up for a new 5k or 10k Heritage Run in Thetford taking in historic sites around the town with fancy dress encouraged.

• See inside Norwich’s Dragon Hall, a magnificent medieval trading hall now home to the National Centre for Writing.

• Hear about wartime experiences, romance, heroism and tragedy at the 1,000 Years of History event at Haveringland Church.

• Take part in a community art piece at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Norwich with the A Prayer Answered for Everyone installation.

• Visit the Flames to Forum exhibition at the Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library remembering the library fire 25 years on and how The Forum rose from the ashes.

• Take your seat at St George’s Theatre in Great Yarmouth for the Voters, Not Bloaters musical celebration of the women’s suffrage movement in the town.

Wild Goings On At Mundesley Library

Normally libraries are quiet places, especially on a Friday evening. But Mundesley Library was the exception to the rule recently as Mundesley Library Friends held their 5th talk.

The serious work of the centre was not forgotten and David told how Wild Touch keeps the animals either permanently in a safe environment or until they can safely be released back to the wild.

A 30lb tortoise made its way steadily among the bookshelves whilst a carrion crow stole the show by flying and hopping between light fittings, bookshelves and other perches.

They were ably assisted by a Barn Owl, white dove, hedgehog, bearded dragon and a snake. Human support was given by David & Christian from the Wild Touch Wildlife Centre based in Ridlington. David impressed us with his encyclopaedic knowledge of all these animals whilst Christian brought all of them around the nearly 30 strong audience and the children in the audience were so excited by the chance to touch and be photographed with a range of wild animals close up but several of the adult audience members seemed even keener!

Tango, whose picture was featured last time, has now left for her new home with an older family who realised that taking on a young cat would not suit their lifestyle or be fair on the cat. She has already settled in and is enjoying having a lap to sit on once again.

I have previously spoken of the problems that can be encountered when getting a cat or kitten from one of pet websites and saw an instance of this on my latest visit to the vets with my own cat. A young lady who I knew from her work with a cat problem in her village, was at the desk having just seen the vet with her very vocal young kitten. Recognising me, she then told me her sorry tale. She had always wanted a Ragdoll cat so had gone on one of these websites and found what she thought was a reputable breeder and paid £200 for a kitten. She had then taken the kitten to the vets because it had a tummy upset and was advised that her kitten was certainly not a Ragdoll but possibly a Siamese cross.

Quite a difference. She said the breeder had charged a lower price because the parents did not have the relevant paperwork showing their breed history. She could have had another kitten, with papers, but this would have cost £400. Although there are reputable breeders who do advertise on these sites, not all are, as this young lady has discovered.

Ragdoll and Siamese cats have such very different temperaments and, although this kitten will be much loved, it is not what she had intended to buy. If you do go to a breeder via the website, make sure they give you the family history (normally going back four generations) and indicate whether or not they are registered with GCCF. Reputable breeders will charge a price depending on whether the kitten is of “show quality” or, if being sold as a pet, will usually insist that it is neutered when old enough.

Last time when mentioning the roles undertaken by our volunteers, we mentioned the various options available for those with computer skills.

There are also other opportunities available which include registering the cat and owners information on the microchip databases (at present we have access to three of these). Because we have access to these websites, we have also been able to reunite cats with their owners who have already been chipped, either having been handed into our care or found as a stray. For those who enjoy working with spreadsheets and “word” there are other options available, more of which next time.

I have now separated Mother & her babies (late July). She will be going back to be released in time to find another mate & have a second litter.

In reality the actual number reared successfully per female in a season is only about two or three, so this mother has done very well in rearing all four of her litter. The four babies I have housed into two couples to avoid fighting. In the wild they would usually grow large & bold enough to wander off on their own at about 6 weeks of age. Introducing the Walsham Drama & Singing Group

A new group of performers took to their pop-up theatre at Yendell’s Health and Wellness Hub on Sunday 21 July to present ‘The 217 Show’, a new variety performance to introduce the Walsham Drama & Singing Group (also known as ‘WDSG’) to the community!

The show fused together elements of drama, poetry, song and dance on a lovely Sunday evening and was compèred by local comedian and WDSG member James Turner. There were rowdy renditions of songs like The Dubliners’ ‘Seven Drunken Nights’, original works written by WDSG members, as well as homages to The Goon Show and Monty Python. Top organist boosts Friends with concert of classics

A concert of organ music classics has raised some “notes” for the North Walsham War Memorial Hospital Friends.

Shakespeare monologues and other recitals of poetry were delivered under stage-lighting.

‘The 217 Show’ came to a close to ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ and the Walsham Drama & Singing Group was considered officially inaugurated.

This is the first of what will be many new and exciting endeavours from WDSG. The group will meet twice a month to rehearse future productions and hold theatre workshops. Regular social events are also being planned. Its next show will be ‘Streets’, an anthology of original works written

by WDSG members and inspired by Ralph McTell’s classic hit ‘Streets of London’, to be performed on Saturday 12 October at Congregational Hall, North Walsham.

The event, staged at the town’s parish church, saw Jon Payne play a programme of music for a summer’s evening.

Focus on Sidestrand Hall Special School

Sidestrand Hall School is a complex needs special school educating over 180 children who travel in from all areas of Norfolk. Our pupils have a wide range of high needs including autism and ADHD with many having more than one condition. Some pupils board in our residential unit for one or two nights per week or in our residential ASD unit for four nights a week.

The school is heavily supported by our registered charity with most of the money being raised via Strands our charity shop in Cromer. Money raised supports activities that enhance pupils learning and personal development such as subsidising trips, paying for visiting activities and more recently the purchase of a bus to convert to a school library.

Our library was converted to a classroom when our numbers increased due to the shortage of special school places in Norfolk. We are currently raising money to buy new library books.

North Norfolk wins big at Building Awards 2019 North Norfolk District Councils (NNDC) Building Control team and its customers had another successful night at the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) East Anglian Building Excellence Awards 2019.

The awards, saw 13 winners and five highly commended projects receive trophies and certificates. The winners within the NNDC Building Control projects were Church Barn, East Ruston undertaken by Simon Wiseman and Wells Maltings Theatre undertaken by Robson Construction, Chaplin Farrant Ltd and Wells Maltings Trust.

The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of building control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards.

This year more than 240 construction professionals attended the Awards at the magnificent buildings of the Halls, St Andrews Plain in Norwich on Friday July 5. The awards showcased buildings and design teams that have come up against complex technical or construction issues across East Anglia, with several north Norfolk projects beating out the stiff competition.

The prizes didn’t stop there, Stow Windmill, Paston, North Walsham undertaken by Roger Hough and P H Design and Planning Ltd also received a Highly Commended award. While Robson Construction were also shortlisted for an individual award making it to the regional finals, along with the Holkham Orientation Centre.

The winners of the regional awards now go through to the National Finals in London in November.

North Norfolk Taekwondo Academy Grading

The most recent grading for North Norfolk Taekwondo Academy took place on Sunday 21 July at Trunch Village Hall.

Five students graded after demonstrating a range of techniques and forms. The successful students were Lucas Brooks, Matthew Goodgame, Dylan Goodgame, Jack Goodgame and Lainie Wakefield.

North Norfolk Taekwondo Academy trains weekly in Holt, West Runton and Trunch. We operate as a not for profit organisation, charging £4 for a two hour lesson to cover hall and insurance costs.

How could I not have seen it?

How could I not have seen it? I really can’t believe it!

How could I miss what’s underneath my nose?

I must be so obtuse! There’s really no excuse!

Only now I see he’s wearing smarter clothes!

He spends longer in the bath and I rarely hear him laugh.

Why didn’t I see all of this much sooner?

Now I think of it, he only smiles a little bit, He used to have a smashing sense of humour.

How come I didn’t see what was there in front of me?

I should have seen the signs when they first showed!

I must be completely dim, but I always trusted him.

I can’t believe he’s going down that road!

Cromer to become tennis coaching centre

I noticed he’s been quiet, but assumed that he was tired, I hadn’t realised his state of mind!

It’s plain for all to see, that is, everyone but me I’m not just stupid, but completely blind!

My head was in the sand and I know I’ve been offhand, But I really didn’t recognise the cause.

Now I feel such a fool, no wonder he’s been cool, He’s been going through the He-male Menopause!

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) entry level coaching course, LTA Level 1, is now being offered in Cromer!

Such courses are only very rarely held in Norfolk and this is the first time for a LTA Level 1 to be held at Cromer. Most LTA courses are held in London and other big centres around the country.

The coaching course is a 3-day course on August 20th, August 21st and September 29th 2019, and is being held at Cromer Lawn Tennis & Squash Club with indoor provision at Easton if weather inclement. This LTA Level 1 course is open to players aged 16 and above and is listed on the LTA courses website www.lta.org.uk and being promoted by Norfolk Tennis (Norfolk LTA).

LTA Level 1 is the entry level qualification for coaching and enables players to become assistant coaches at tennis clubs. Players can then quickly go on to level 2 to enable them to coach groups and then indeed to Level 3 to enable them to coach individuals, working independently. A number of young people find tennis a good way of paying their way through higher education – by assisting with the tennis at College sports centres and giving lessons to their fellow students.

Some get summer jobs as coaches in the Mediterranean or even do their gap year as a tennis coach.

The LTA Level 1 course is fun – you learn so much in technique, teaching technique and organising groups of children.

Golf Day Raises £9000

On behalf of the Holt Youth Project and North Norfolk Rotary Club may I through your publication confirm we have raised £9000 from our Annual Charity Golf Day at Royal Cromer Golf Club, held on July 17th, 2019

Our Thanks go to the Management, Professional shop and catering team for the superb services offered and without which we could not hold the event. Alongside the many volunteers that help make the day a success.

The event was held with a full team complement of 96 players and complete hole sponsorship, which we are indebted to all the many local businesses who supported us, once again. An especial mention to Norfolk Homes who was our main sponsor and have been now for several years.

Next Saturday (17th) sees the first of two pre-season matches at Scottow Park when Crowborough, just

The following Saturday, Hertford, fifth last season in London & South East Premier (the League above the Vikings) travel to Norfolk. Both matches kick off at 3.00pm and are likely to consist of four quarters.
