North Walsham community’s bid for Market Towns Initiative grant

North Norfolk District Council have launched their Market Towns Initiative, an ambitious scheme aimed at helping the four inland market towns thrive, bring about improvements and raise their profile, to help them become even better places to live, work and visit. .

In North Walsham an application for the £100,000 available is being prepared jointly by Regenerate North Walsham Community Interest Company and North Walsham Town Council. Subject to survey and other feedback, the projects are likely to include physical improvements to St Nicholas Court, seating around the town, information and heritage signage, paths to the canal, town centre Wi-fi and a youth hub, all of which will help to improve the environment and increase footfall

around the town.

To ensure that they are focussing on projects that capture the imagination of residents, the team are carrying out surveys via touch screens in Café Kitale and North Walsham Community Shop and on-line too at northwalsham.co.uk/market-town-initiative/

The bid is also being supported by a range of town groups and organisations and promises to be a real community-based bid for these funds.

Happisburgh Fete and Lifeboat Day

Early in the morning on Sunday 5 August, Station members and friends went into action to prepare for the annual Fete and Lifeboat Day.

Everyone worked hard to get everything set up in the hot morning sun. But come midday everything was ready and the fete was opened and hundreds of people swarmed onto the site, enjoying the BBQ, beer tent, stalls, cakes, teas, games, raffle, tombola and RNLI Shop and lots more. Music was provided by ‘The Shambolics’.

There was an opportunity to meet the lifeboat crew, the Community Safety Team, the RNLI’s Face to Face team, the Coastguards and the Newfoundland Rescue Dogs and then watch displays by Happisburgh’s lifeboats - the Atlantic 85 ‘Howard Bell’ and the D Class, ‘Russell Pickering’ and Cromer’s Tamar, ‘Lester’ and the Newfoundland Rescue Dogs.

The weather for this special day couldn’t have been better and there was a large crowd assembled on the slipway to watch the displays.

The Newfoundland Rescue Dogs are now a firm favourite with the spectators.

were made aware of a jet skier who had fallen from his craft just south of the Station. The Station’s D Class, ‘Russell Pickering’ was re-launched at 4pm with Christian Larter as helm, Jake Munday, Martin Gibbs and Sean Furguson as crew. It arrived on scene within minutes to find a 43 yr old male who had made his own way to shore, suffering chest and ankle pain. He was assessed by the crew, who contacted the Coastguard for assistance. The casualty was moved to Cart Gap Lifeboat Station where he was monitored until the arrival of the Ambulance, which transported him to A & E. This was the first call-out for Happisburgh Station this year.

The Fete raised over £8000 on the day to enable the Station to carry on its work of saving lives at sea.

We would like to thank everyone who attended and gave generously and all the volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

New Centre for North Norfolk Riding for the Disabled

Our established charity has relocated from Weybourne to a new riding centre at Hall Farm, Sloley Road, Worstead NR28 9RS.

Starting on 11 September at 10am we offer local children with disabilities from two schools and some individuals, the opportunity to enjoy the therapeutic benefits from riding horses and ponies on a regular basis.

The transformations experienced by our riders is hugely rewarding for all involved. Volunteers feel they are giving something back to their local community, and riders gain a real sense of achievement, and a pride in their new-found skills.

Get Up and Go Yellow for EAAA

East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is asking the public to help them celebrate National Air Ambulance Week (10-16 September) by taking part in their ‘Get Up and Go Yellow’ fundraising day on Thursday 13 September.

The charity wanted to host a day that anyone could get involved with anywhere at any time, and came up with the idea to donate and go yellow. Everyone can take part, either alone or with friends, family, work colleagues, schools, groups or whoever you want to get involved. All you need to do is get up and wear, bake, make, create and go yellow in homage to the charity’s yellow helicopter. You could have a wear it yellow to work day (with your boss’s permission of course), bake some yellow cakes, hold a yellow raffle, guess the number of yellow sweets in the jar, decorate your desk yellow and so much more.

EAAA is a charity providing a life-saving helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia. Each of their crews consist of two pilots, one doctor and a critical

care paramedic. The crew take advanced critical care directly to patients who have suffered life-threatening or life-changing accidents or medical emergencies.

Head of Community Fundraising, Stuart Wyle, said “This is a new initiative for us, and we really wanted to host something that would celebrate National Air Ambulance Week, but also EAAA as a charity, and we thought what better way than to turn as many people as possible across the region yellow, the colours of our wonderful H145 helicopter. We can’t wait to see all the creative ways people think of to go yellow and raise funds. All the money donated from the day will go towards helping us save lives across the region. Without your support we can’t do what we do.�

Celebrating Norfolk at Poppies!

The staff and children at Poppies Nursery, North Walsham have been celebrating the beautiful county of Norfolk in their summer activities.

On Norfolk Day, they served fish 'n chips at lunchtime in takeaway boxes donated by Will from Will's Plaice in East Runton. Throughout that week the children had celebrated farming, playing in a farmyard themed area and making animal masks and animal paintings.

Local man hopes to take on JK Rowling with the first novel in an exciting new trilogy When heroes fall, who will rise to take their place?

Latest Book in the Yesterday’s Series

This is news of another book in the Yesterday’s series. It’s a book we’ve been waiting for, for the cold winter when there’s nothing on television.

Many of us, young and old enjoyed the previous two books Yesterday’s Loves and Laughter and Yesterday’s Hearts and Homes by Geoffrey Dixon. They were stories of life in the village and on the land in Norfolk in the nineteen fifties. They are times that many of us remember well and love to hear stories set in that era. Many younger people have read them and have been very interested at how different life was then and they can sit back and consider how much things have changed since then.

This is the theme of Geoffrey’s new book, Yesterday’s Labours Lost in which he tells Robert Dennis’ story of his life spent in a Norfolk village working as a smallholder.

Just 60 years ago the landscape of Norfolk with its farms, cottages, farm buildings, fields, trees and hedgerows, lanes and roads was so different. The ways of caring for the land, the machinery used, the numbers of men employed on the farms, how the crops were sown, tended, and harvested, the nature and wildlife that was seen have all changed so much, as has life in a village and in our wildlife.

Yesterday’s Labours Lost is a book that can be recommended to young and old alike. First of all it’s a lovely story, enchanting and fascinating at the same time, about people we know so well and it is set in a village just like ours. But there is a message behind the story that will question where we are going now and there are questions you’ll be asking too.

As we say, it is a book that everyone will both enjoy and talk about afterwards.

The book should be in the shops in Cromer (Jarrolds), North Walsham (Showcase Gallery) and Stalham (Forrests) by September.

Making a Will

- The importance of having an up-to-date will

The simple definition of a Will is a legal document that sets out your wishes regarding the distribution of your money, possessions and property (known as your ‘estate’) after death.

Having a Will in place gives you peace of mind and legal assurance that your wishes will be carried out once you are gone so that you know your family will be taken care of.

Although it is often difficult to think about the inevitable, having a Will in place is arguably one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only can a will legally protect your partner, children and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on.

Consequently, it’s important to regularly review your Will to ensure it’s still fit for purpose and reflects your current personal circumstances.

We encourage our clients to review their Wills every three to five years, both to ensure that their wishes are up to date but also to consider changes in the law or tax system which may have a personal impact. By way of recent example, in April 2017 the government brought in a new Inheritance Tax (IHT) allowance. This allowance is essentially available on death to anyone leaving a residential property to their children, and is excellent news for many individuals and families who will see huge tax savings as a result. However, the legislation is complex

and Wills made prior to 2017 are often drafted in such a way as to prohibit or limit access to this new allowance. A simple thing such as an age contingency on a gift to children or grandchildren, i.e. for my grandchildren at the age of 18, could mean the loss of this allowance.

It is reported that 1 in 3 people in the UK die without having a written Will in place to protect their family and assets. If you die without a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules.

These rules are old fashioned and can lead to disappointment and injustice.

Did you know?

• If you die without a Will your husband, wife or civil partner may not automatically inherit everything; they may have to share your estate with other relatives.

• If you are not married or in a civil partnership your partner is not automatically entitled to anything.

• If you separate from your spouse, they will stand to receive at least a proportion of your estate if you die before your divorce is fully finalised.

• Marriage or entering a civil partnership will revoke your Will.

Writing a Will does not need to be a lengthy process, after the first appointment, initial draft Wills are usually sent out within 10 working days. Once you are happy with the Will, a further appointment is made for the Will to be signed and witnessed. It is then usual for the legal provider to hold a copy of the Will until it is needed by the family.

Today, blended families are more common than ever, with a growing number of step-families and blended families who are raising children from their previous and present marriages.

Add 14 youngsters and a few, slightly apprehensive parents, and you had the recipe for the recent highly successful slime making workshop held at Mundesley Library on the morning of 1 August.

As the event unfolded the children were taught how to make slime and also given interesting facts about processes involved. Judging by the noise levels, the comments made afterwards and the fact that the session was over-subscribed, the day was viewed as a great success and there is talk of repeat sessions in the future.

The session was headed by Helena from the Norfolk Library Service and was arranged by Sheila, our Library Manager, who was assisted by several Mundesley Library Friends.

‘Christianity Explored’ is a free to participate course offering the chance to ask and explore these and other important questions in a relaxed non- threatening environment. Open to all and taking place over seven weeks on Sunday afternoons 4pm at the Salvation Army Hall Lane, North Walsham the course promises there will be no prayers or hymns and starts on Sunday 9 September 9.

‘”Christianity Explored’ is a bit like a shorter and simpler form of the Alpha course which has seen over a million people take part in over the last few years, many tens of thousands of whom say it has made a real difference to their lives” says Major Richard Durrant of the Salvation Army. “The format will involve a short introduction and film followed by the chance in smaller groups to ask and think about relevant questions whilst enjoying refreshments”.

‘Folks are free to ask whatever questions they want’ says Richard.

Whilst ideally people will seek to come to all 7 sessions, each one stands in its own right so people can just come when they can or choose to.

I write with reference to the letter about noise pollution by aircraft in NW Times issue 548 dated 11 August 2018.

As an 84 year old pensioner, for the last 18 years residing in North Walsham. I would like to relate to the above incidents which as a young lad I witnessed in the 1940s in Southrepps.

In the early evenings night after night, week after week, a droning in the sky at about two thousand feet (not 30 or 40 thousand), also very deafening, was heard by all.

I would like to coin that phrase used by a reporter of the Falklands conflict, I counted them all out and counted them all back, but was unable to do that because a lot of them never returned and some who did were badly shot up, and had a terrible job to make it back to Blighty - we heard stories of aircrew being hosed out of gun turrets.

If these actions by all servicemen from various countries had not taken place perhaps in this once great country of ours, people may not be so free to express extreme views, as by your previous correspondent.

As for Lakenheath Air Base, long may it continue to be based in this country.

We may need it again Mr Hunt - who knows? You and I don’t.

Local producer's marmalade wins Great Taste Awards

Norfolk producer, Ollands Farm Foods, is celebrating success at the prestigious Great Taste Awards 2018 after for two of their marmalades have been recognised. This year their King Harry Marmalade and Norfolk Saffron Marmalade both received one of the coveted stars.

Over 12,600 products were judged by more than 500 of the most demanding palates in the industry including MasterChef 2018 winner, Kenny Tutt, chef and food writer, Elly Curshen and author and blogger Izy Hossack. Food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges and Sourced Market also took part in the blind tasting.

The Great Taste Awards have been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world, celebrating the very best in food and drink. So, winning a star is quite the accolade. Acting as a seal of approval, a gold star from the Great Taste Awards sets this Norfolk marmalade apart from the rest.

Bittern Line disruption ‘unacceptable’, says local MP Norman Lamb

Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has written to Greater Anglia asking for answers over ‘unacceptable’ ongoing disruption to the service between Norwich and Sheringham.

In one week the service was terminated three times in Cromer, on the 3rd, 7th and 9th August. Passengers for East Runton and Sheringham, including the elderly, young children and tourists with heavy luggage, have reported being stranded in the pouring rain with no information or assistance.

Mr Lamb understands that an arrangement is supposed to be in place between Greater Anglia and Sanders Coaches so that train tickets for cancelled trains are valid on Sanders buses. However, one passenger reported being told by a Sanders bus driver that there was no such arrangement in place and they would have

to buy a full price bus ticket.

Mr Lamb first learnt of the ongoing issue through complaints on Twitter, and has also received a number of correspondence from constituents about their experiences. After writing to Network Rail, who Greater Anglia have claimed are responsible for the disruption, Mr Lamb has written to Greater Anglia to demand answers.

Mr Lamb said “I recognise that problems with the line may be the responsibility of Network Rail but it is clearly unacceptable to simply tell passengers that they need to get off in Cromer with no real explanation or guidance on how to get home.

“Clearly, there is a very real need to ensure that there is an adequate replacement service in place for passengers to be able to complete their journey when their train is either

cancelled or terminated. This is particularly critical during the peak tourist season but I am also conscious that there are many elderly residents in North Norfolk.

“I recognise that one of the responses issued

by Greater Anglia is that they are introducing a new fleet of trains in 2019-2020, but there is clearly a very real need to resolve such issues as those outlined above now. Passengers cannot afford to wait for a new fleet of trains to prevent such occurrences again and, if it is true that the recent disruption was caused by problems on the track, then simply replacing trains will not resolve this issue.”

At the time of writing Network Rail are still investigating the issue and a response to Mr Lamb's letter has not yet been received from Greater Anglia.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Charley, the cat with skin problems, is responding well to treatment and we hope that he will soon be given a clean bill of health. We always prefer to wait until a cat has completely recovered before putting them up for adoption, although this is not always possible. Should the cat have ongoing medical problems, for instance diabetes, this would be explained to the new owner before re-homing.

Re-homing has been slow recently, which is something which usually happens at this time of the year because people are taking holidays, but also because we have had such unusually hot weather. However, we have said goodbye to several kittens. Rufus, Leroy and Troilus have already left for new homes, while Joffrey, Jessie and Ulysses will have left by the time you read this article. We have many more cats and kittens waiting for someone to give them a home and, hopefully, as we are now experiencing our normal weather we will receive more enquiries for them.

The new pain relief procedures for cats being operated on or neutered at our expense are now fully operational with the five vets that we use, namely, Bridge, Westover and Glaven with whom we have accounts and Bure Valley and Miramar who neuter cats under our special neutering campaign. All five practices were delighted to be involved and are now able to send the cats out with syringes of pain relief when they leave their care. We provide the pain relief and syringes and they administer this without any additional charges to the branch. What stars!

We often get asked for help with feral cats, primarily to get them neutered, and we are only too happy to help in this way. However, if a cat is feral and someone asks if we can take it into care we do have to advise we are not able to help. To confine a feral cat in any way, especially in a cat pen, is cruel. We have on two occasions this year taken a cat into care which we believed was used to people only to find

this was not the case. The cats were very unhappy to be confined and we quickly made arrangements for them to go back to the areas they came from, where they would be provided with shelter and regular feeding. Unfortunately, if a cat has not been socialised at a young age and is not used to contact with people, it will prefer to be free and not to be confined for any length of time.

Hedgehog Haven Meet Boris!

Boris was handed in by a member of the public to a worker at the National Trust in Brancaster as they were working this way the next day.

I was contacted and he came into my care weighing only 90 gms.

He had a set-back needing treatment for a parasitic problem called coccidian.

Following treatment he now weighs 200gms and is doing well. There is usually more then one hoglet in a litter and as such he was feeling lonely so I have given him a substitute sibling to cuddle up to.

Saving Sighthounds

Grace on arrival There has been a lot of publicity in recent years highlighting the plight of greyhounds and their treatment at the hands of the racing industry.

Norfolk Greyhound Rescue (NGR) is one charity dedicated to rescuing these dogs as well as other sighthounds such as whippets and lurchers. They rescue dogs from Ireland where animal cruelty legislation and attitudes are less favourable to these dogs than over here.

These dogs are usually those who don’t make the cut for racing as well as those who are

NGR differs from other charities in that dogs are not accepted directly from the racing industry but from Irish rescue charities and placed in foster homes to be assessed and socialised. They are then ready to be matched directly with their forever homes and do not have to spend prolonged periods in kennels.

This reduces the number of dogs returned as unsuitable as they have already been matched for temperament rather than chosen just for looks.

Hayley Pattrick and her husband Richard have run the charity for 3 years and in that time have rescued and rehomed 400 dogs as far afield as Kent to the north of Scotland. All prospective homes are checked and adopters pay £150 for their dog to help pay for vets bills, vaccinations and transport.

To Neuter or Not

This week I wanted to share some details regarding the pros and cons of neutering our pets. The subject is currently at the forefront of our minds as we have seen serious uterus infections in elderly members of our canine population every day this week!

This is something of an unusual week, but nevertheless it is a problem we encounter very commonly. These infections tend to occur most commonly around 6 weeks after a bitch is in season and start by causing an increase in thirst, a decrease in appetite, vomiting and sometimes a nasty smelling discharge as well. Ultimately they progress to be life-threatening unless treated, which usually involves an emergency hysterectomy.

Uterus infections are completely avoidable by neutering, but they are not the only reason that we advise neutering female dogs. Early neutering massively reduces the risk of dogs developing mammary cancers in later life, but in order to see the greatest benefits they need to be neutered in their first couple of years of life. Neutering also prevents phantom pregnancies, cystic ovary disease and ovarian cancers.

The arguments against neutering are that patients have a tendency to gain weight, although this can be controlled with diet and exercise, it can alter their coat condition and a very small percentage of bitches develop urinary incontinence in later life, once again this is usually manageable with medication.

The other concern many pet owners have is with regard to the anaesthetic and the surgery. These risks are extremely low, especially in young fit animals and we now have the option of keyhole surgery to speed up recovery and reduce risks further.

With male dogs there are benefits too, including preventing testicular cancer and reducing the incidence of prostate disease. Neutered male dogs are also less likely to roam and it can help with certain behavioural issues, but it is best to clearly assess any behavioural issues before assuming castration will help.

Graham Allen Award entries span North Norfolk

Entries to the building excellence competition run by North Norfolk District Council feature a wide range of types of building

This year’s Graham Allen Award entries run across the entire North Norfolk district and feature a wide range of styles and types of building.

Properties are spread from Holkham in the west to Waxham in the east and also include Bale, Cley, East Ruston, Fakenham, Holt, North Walsham, Trimingham, Trunch, Walsingham, Wells and Weybourne.

There are extensions, replacement homes, barn conversions, a mixed use development, a police station, a music and sixth form centre, a new village hall and restorations.

A total of 14 entries will be whittled down to a shortlist later in the month. That shortlist

will then be judged ‘on the ground’ by a panel including members of the NNDC Development Control Committee, the Cabinet Member for Planning and Mr Edward Allen, who represents the Allen family.

The Graham Allen Award has for the last 36 years celebrated best practice in design and conservation in the district. North Norfolk has a history of producing high quality innovative developments and sensitive renovation projects, which complement the district’s unique environment.

Originally inaugurated in 1982 as a memorial to the late Graham Allen, the first Chairman of NNDC, the award scheme has recognised a diverse selection of North Norfolk’s finest architecture. The award, in the form of a bronze plaque, is presented to the scheme considered to have made the most significant

District Ex-Service & Social Club, 64 Hungate Street, Aylsham, NR11 6AA, has 2 quick-play tournaments (on Monday 3 September & Monday 10 September), followed by 2 open evenings (on Monday 17 September & Monday 24t September). Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)

Hayley Pettitt is a Partner and Deputy Head of the Wills, Trusts and Lifetime Planning Department. Hayley graduated from the University of East Anglia with a 2:1 (Hons) law degree. Hayley is also a member of the Society of Trusts andEstates Practitioners (STEP) having passed her diploma with distinction’.

It is encouraging to hear that we are now living longer, whether it is due to healthier lifestyles or the advancement in health and social care.

There are a lot of myths surrounding decisions relating to medical treatment. The Solicitors for the Elderly report found the following to be common misconceptions:65% of people believe their next of kin can make medical and care decisions for them, should they not be able to. That is not correct – only doctors acting in a person’s best interest have the authority to make the final decisions for them, with or without the consent of their relatives. Any disputes are referred to the Court of Protection.

47% of people believe that a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order is placed on a person’s medical records and is then in place for every future decision. Again, that is incorrect - a DNR does not travel with a person; in other words, one is required for every hospital, care home etc. A DNR direction can however be included in an LPA and relied upon at any location.

Many people believe that next of kin will be able to select a care home. That is not necessarily the case as Social Services can make this selection (which may not be in a person’s preferred location) if an LPA is not in place authorising another person to do so.

Unfortunately however, although we are living to a greater age, many of us are now losing mental capacity in later life. An alarming report published by Solicitors for the Elderly warns that around 12 million Britons at high risk of future incapacity have not planned ahead to allow for this eventuality and prepared Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

The report focuses on the increase in dementia with their research finding that 12.8 million people over the age of 65 run the risk of developing dementia, yet there are only 928,000 LPAs currently registered. By 2025 their research predicts around 13.2 million people will be at risk but only 2.2 million LPAs are expected to be in place.

Since October 2007 when LPAs were introduced Hansells has seen a steady uptake in property and financial affairs LPAS. These LPAs allow a person to appoint someone such as a family member, friend or even a professional adviser to make financial decisions on their behalf.

Such decisions can include where to invest monies and also whether a property should be sold or not.

In summary, although this is a difficult subject to broach with family members it is very important to raise such matters and have the necessary paperwork in place to avoid unnecessary stress and worry at what can be an already difficult time. LPAs should be viewed as forms of insurance; they will hopefully never be needed but would make life so much easier for all involved should the need arise.

In 2007 there was also a new type of LPA also introduced relating to personal health and welfare decisions. This initially had a much lower uptake by clients but the need for them over the last few years has become clearer and we have found that they are proving to be as important as the original type. The health and welfare LPA ensures that a person’s wishes around medical treatments, end of life care, nursing or residential care needs and living arrangements are adhered to, should you lose the ability to make decisions for yourself.

Street Collection for Prostrate Cancer Research

When Steve Downes, columnist and content editor at the EDP, visited Aylsham to judge the annual Aylsham in Bloom’s Traders’ Competitions, he was faced with a difficult task. Not only did he have to choose an overall winner for the best external floral display, he also had to select the winner for the Inside Out Competition which is for the best external floral display that reflects the business inside the building.

The Unicorn’s floriferous contribution (including tomatoes) won the Floral Competition. Susan Frazer accepted the plaque on behalf of the team. Richard’s Hair Design was Runner Up with The Dog Stop and Broadland Consultants receiving Highly Commended certificates for their displays.

Johnny Payne and Jason Gibbons at Coxfords Butchers were very pleased to receive their Inside Out award with a Peppa Pig flower arrangement adding to the overall display. They just pipped Runner Up Bonds Fish and Chip shop’s inventive home crafted sea scape. The Ex-Servicemen’s Club and Budgens received Highly Commended for their first time efforts.

A teenager with dreams of being a professional golfer has won his home club’s top trophy.

It comes just as the young Bacton man prepares to start a three-year Birmingham university course in applied golf management next month – which will qualify him as a PGA golf pro.

The handicap championship was won by Bob Peaker from Aylsham, who played off 20, with net scores of 71 and 63. The retired teacher and lecturer has worked at high schools in Sheringham and North Walsham and was an England Schools rugby coach.

“It is a dream come true, because they only accept about 20 people a year. We learn coaching, sports science, training and management – all sorts of things useful for a club pro – but I would love to be a playing pro,” said the former North Walsham High School and Paston College student.

For both champions it was the first time they had landed the championship cups.

The previous weekend another teenager won a prestigious club trophy, with 15-year-old Finley Mundesley’s teenage club champion James Burnett-Kiernan from Hoveton lifting the George Lester (credit Richard Batson) Watts trophy with stableford scores of 42 and 41 points.
