North Walsham Gymnastic Club Christmas Display North Walsham Sport Centre was once again the host of the town’s annual Gymnastic Club display at the end of last year, where 120 gymnasts participated and approximately 400 spectators turned up to watch the afternoon performances.

Children as young as three showed what they had been learning during their training sessions, as well as the more experienced gymnasts showing their skills on the floor, beam and vault. With a selection of stalls, including raffle, tombola, cakes and many more, a fantastic amount of £1,136 was raised which will go towards the club funds.

Head coach Alexis Thurston said “This year has been a great year, achieving medals at the County and Regional competitions, and I am very proud of everyone who took part”. She went on to say “At the beginning of the year two 7 year old gymnasts competed at a National Elite competition achieving a pass at grade level 5. Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers would like to thank all our supporters for their help and support throughout 2014.

We have had a busy year with seven callouts to dive boats and other disabled craft, along with the occasional dog rescue.

At the end of March Charolotte Siely became the first female Helm of a D-class lifeboat at Happisburgh.

Dawn Phenix was given a Vellum of Thanks from the RNLI for work in fundraising. In May Cedric Cox, Station Operations Manager, went to The Barbican in London to receive the RNLI Gold Badge for his 47 years service at Happisburgh.

In July we celebrated one hundred years of continuous service and Malcolm Vincent, member of the RNLI Council, came to the Station to present a Vellum of Service in front of present and past crews. Also in July the Coastal Safety Team was set up with five volunteers from Happisburgh being involved. Lifeboat Day was held on 3 August with a callout just as we were about to start! However the day went well and we managed to raise £5,000 in the space of four hours. Later in August the Sta-

tion was asked to take part in Penelope Keith’s “Hidden Villages”, a TV show for More4, which was shown in November.

The Spirit of Berkhamsted, which is one of New Shop at Cart Gap the oldest D-class lifeboats in service with the RNLI has been away for a re-fit and has returned with a new radio and chart plotter, which makes it one of the most up to date in the fleet.

In October Christian Larter became a Helm of the Atlantic Lifeboat.

Also in October, Tim Grimmer, Tony Phenix and Cubitt Siely went to St Paul’s Cathedral to be the Colour Party for the RNLI Standard at the National Service for Seafarers.

In December we had a new Souvenir shot added to our Cart Gap site we are looking for volunteers to help run the shop. We are always on the look-out for new crew members and if you are interested in either role please contact the Station.

On Boxing Day night Jake Munday gave up his Boxing Day to cover a 12 hour period at Gravesend Lifeboat Station, one of the Thames Stations, which are on a three minute response to any emergency.

Once again Happisburgh Lifeboat volunteers would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to all our supporters and wish you a Happy and Safe 2015 and look forward to your continued support.

The club holds sessions five days a week at the Sport Centre and currently has a consultant looking into the possibility of their own facilities. This will allow expansion of classes and to maximise gymnasts to their full potential with the best training equipment possible.

The December meeting was our Christmas Party and the Committee supplied and served a tasty selection of cheese and biscuits. Sylvia once again baked a delicious cake and decorated it in a festive theme. This was enjoyed during the break with our refreshments.

An abundance of items were collected during the evening for the Food Bank - this was in place of our usual Secret Santa.

Carole King has agreed to be a delegate at the Norfolk Federation Meeting in March, likewise Marianne Reed has offered to be delegate at the Centenary General Meeting at the Albert Hall on 4 June.

Members fees are due in January - is £36 single and £17 dual membership. The treasurer has asked that monies, cash or cheque, be placed in an envelope with your name on the front, and brought along to the January meeting.

Our speaker for the evening was Charlotte Philcox who gave us lots of interesting stories and slides on Christmas decorations, holly, ivy and other greenery. There are many myths and legends surrounding these plants with some suggestions of the little people that you have to consider before adorning your home with the pretty greenery. The yew and rosemary were purported to give eternal life and the red berries to keep away the evil eye. The talk was enjoyed by all the members who like me, will be considering the little people in future.

Rotarians Celebrate Youth

Rotarians in North Walsham celebrated youth at their meeting on 15 December at Scarborough Hill Hotel – not their own youth, you understand, but the achievements of three very impressive local young people - Ashley Taylor, Gemma Beasy and Cameron Pitts.

Ashley was the Club’s guest speaker. She had been sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of North Walsham and Broadland to take part in the Rotary Young Leader Award programme in September at Graffham Water. This was her return visit to describe her experiences on this challenging leadership programme. Her talk was inspiring and showed what she had taken away from the RYLA experience – and a little too of what she had given during the very challenging week. Ashley, from Trunch and a former Paston Sixth Form College student, is currently in her first year studying History at Canterbury Christ Church University.

She is now reading Biochemistry at the UEA.

Local celebrity John Hurt, who lives near Cromer, was awarded a Knighthood for his services to drama in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

Seventy four year old Sir John, has led a distinguished career through a variety of perfomances including The Elephant Man, Nineteen Eighty Four and The Naked Civil Servant as well as many Shakespearean roles. He also appeared as Harry Potter's wandmaker Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter series of films.

In 2013 he appeared in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode "The Day of the Doctor", as a 'forgotten' incarnation of the Doctor, known as the War Doctor.

Amongst other honours, Sir John has received two Academy Award nominations, a Golden Globe Award, and four BAFTA Awards, the fourth being a Lifetime Achievement recognition.

Cameron, who moved to the area only two years ago from West Yorkshire, received the Bob Farman Cup for his work at North Walsham High School in IT. So impressive was this that the school has sponsored him on an IT apprenticeship at the school itself.

Among those present at the meeting were Rotarians and partners from North Walsham, Rotarians from Broadland and Rotary District 1080 Assistant District Governor, Keith Tovey.

Club President, Paul Ryall said “We had a really wonderful, inspiring evening. It was a privilege to meet three such impressive young people.”

Happy Learners

Over 70 people benefitted from free IT courses funded by a community grant from TCHC (The Consultancy Home Counties) in conjunction with Cromer Past Present Future Ltd.

The courses were held at three locations over North Norfolk Fakenham, Wells-next-the-Sea & Merchants’ Place Community Resource & Learning Centre based in Cromer.

The ‘Get Ready for Work’ project was aimed at those wishing to get back into employment or wanting to improve their IT skills. Twelve courses were delivered over six weeks - Beginners I.T, Follow-on I.T, Creative I.T and Ready for Work.

A small team from Learning for Everyone, Merchants’ Place & Voluntary Norfolk helped with the support and delivery of the project.

The main kitchen once had an ‘emergency’ window fitted after our old friend Terry Bane fell through a single-skin brick wall during a tea-break, and removing paper from lathe-and-plaster walls is often done with heart in mouth! However no mishaps yet and we will be back open for Burns’ Night on 23rd January.

CRANACHAN Ingredients Serves 4 • 5 tbsp porridge oats • 300 ml whipping or double cream • 2 tbsp clear honey • 2 tbsp whisky • 400 g raspberries

Method Preheat the grill to high. Line the rack in the grill pan with foil and spread the oatmeal over the foil.

Toast under the grill for about 3 minutes, stirring once or twice, until the oatmeal is golden.

Weather predictions from Ned Nimbus

2014 was notable for its stormy and wet start followed by a fine summer other than August, a warm Autumn, giving way to more normal conditions in December. Overall, nothing out of ordinary for our changeable climate when no two years are the same.

February will see a mix of weather and temperatures with the chance of a warm spell mid month before temperatures return to average (7c) or below.

March will be generally unsettled with a notable colder spell 14th to 20th and thereafter, as the sun is getting stronger, any days with a little more warmth will set off heavy showers.

It won't be long after Christmas that our weather will turn colder and that will set a pattern for January with high pressure never too far away but temperatures below average (5c) for much of the month - only towards the end of the month will we see a temporary rise.

Jazz at The Hub

Best (drums/percussion), Holly Graham (vocalist) and Dave (trombone) are always in demand, whether it be symphony orchestras, big bands, theatre shows or teaching. The common denominator is a love of and commitment to playing jazz that is enjoyable and challenging and accessible for people to listen to.

The monthly jazz programme on Sunday evenings at The Hub at Sheringham Little Theatre has been extremely successful and will be ushered into the New Year when local trombone maestro Dave Amis takes his quintet, Cyan Traces, to the venue on 25 January.

Dave is truly a local musician and still lives in Cromer. His father ran a well known band in the area, Dave sang in the parish choir, learnt piano and began playing trombone with the Cromer and Sheringham Town Band. As a child the family home was awash with the sounds of jazz (played on 78s) and the AFN Frankfurt and Voice of America Jazz Hour were regular ‘wireless’ programmes. In addition, the area was still heavily populated

by American service men and they had an influence on the indigenous music culture.

With the seeds of his music career firmly sown, Dave’s yearning for jazz took him to London when he was sixteen. It was in the metropolis, where he met like minded musicians and attended music college, that his development continued and took him into a career in music.

Cyan Traces was formed in 2009 and the personnel have remained constant, all highly regarded amongst the most eminent players of all styles in the Anglia region. Tom Harris (piano), Ivars Galenieks (double bass) Alex

Dave directs the group and writes the arrangements and is constantly working on new ideas to present an evolving programme.

All of the music in the library was chosen because of its artistic merit, the charm of the melody/harmony and the quality of the lyrics.

Every piece is unique to the group while remaining respectful to the original idea.

North Walsham & District Historical Society

At a toe-tapping December meeting we were greatly entertained by Chanter’s Jigge as they performed a festive programme, “Deck the Halls.” Chanter’s Jigge are Malcolm and Elizabeth Ecclestone – who have appeared in film and television and have performed extensively in Great Britain and abroad.

Between them, Malcolm and Elizabeth played a bewildering array of musical instruments dating from Tudor times to the 20th century. There was the HURDY GURDY (a stringed instrument that produces sound by a crank-turned wheel rubbing against the strings); a CURTAL (a Renaissance-era musical instrument and a predecessor of the bassoon); the folk woodwind instrument called the CHALUMEAU (the predecessor to the modern-day clarinet) and the ‘J’ shaped CRUMHORN (with the name deriving from the German Krumhorn meaning bent horn.)

We were treated to a festive hotpot of Christmas carols such as God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen and I Saw Three Ships; folk tunes and traditional music such as Here We Come A Wassailing and Merrily Danced the Quaker’s Wife and lively readings from such works as Thomas Hardy’s Under the Greenwood Tree.

Everyone got into the spirit of the season with singing to the well-known carols, some clapping of hands, stamping of feet and a deeper appreciation of the wonderful folk music traditions of this country.

During the interval, for which members had supplied plenty of festive nibbles, we were encouraged to look more closely at the musical instruments and to talk to Malcolm and Elizabeth about the music. We learned that carols were originally played during all seasons of the Medieval year but gradually evolved to be only for Christmas, as we know them today.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm, Thursday 5 February in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham when Roger Crane will be talking about the history of electricity.

Mike Macartney-Filgate has been selected as the Green Party's candidate for the North Norfolk Parliamentary Constituency for the General Election next May.

A recently retired Norfolk social worker and longtime resident of Catfield, in the constituency, he has been a parish councillor and has stood for the Green Party in the 1987 General Election and the 1989 European elections, in which he came third and retained his deposit.

North Norfolk Young Carers Christmas Dinner

CRACKERS AND CHEQUES

The Rotary Club of North Norfolk treated twenty five young carers to a traditional Christmas dinner at the Feathers Hotel in Holt on 10 December.

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the young carers and the Rotarians, many of whom attended with their partners. The Rotary club has helped support this very worthwhile charity for several years and during that time have raised some £30,000.

On the night Alastair Mayes, President of the Rotary Club presented Julie Alford, (on behalf of the Young Carers) with a further cheque for £2,500.

Christmas Day Lunch

On behalf of all the guests, I would like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who took part in the organisation of the Christmas Day lunch at North Walsham Community Centre.

As usual it was a great success - the staff who volunteered worked so hard to make sure everyone had a memorable day, the menu was delicious, there were raffle prizes and everyone went home with a present after listening to the Queen`s Speech.

What a wonderful day for those who would have otherwise been alone on that very special day.

North Norfolk Rotary Club’s 20th Anniversary Charter Night A Magical Evening

The North Norfolk Rotary Club celebrated the 20th anniversary of the club’s inauguration on 3 December at the Beechwood Hotel in North Walsham. Fifty five attended and President Alastair Mayes welcomed the guests which included Assistant Governor Keith Tovey, John Williams, President of the Cromer and Sheringham club, Paul Ryall President of the North Walsham club and Ian Graham President of the Aylsham Club.

Several founder members of the club had been traced Guests left to right; Alastair Mayes, and also attended. After an Paul Ryall, John Williams, Keith excellent meal, The Right Tovey.

Reverend Peter Fox entertained everyone with a captivating magic show.

The club was chartered on 4 August 1994, with an initial membership of nineteen, three of whom (Tony Bond, Peter Lawton and Steve Wilson) remain members as at the 20th anniversary. The club was open to female members from the outset.

The club meets on Monday evenings at The Dales Upper Sheringham.

Nativity and Carol Concert at North Walsham Infant and Junior Schools

On Wednesday 17 December, pupils from North Walsham Infant School performed their nativity at St Nicholas church. This was followed in the afternoon by a Carol Concert performed by pupils of the Junior School. It was wonderful to share the events with so many parents and families and we hope that everyone has enjoyed a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Merrily on High!

Millfield Primary School in North Walsham started their Christmas season with the Early Phase children performing their Christmas Nativity to the school and two special performances to their parents and families.

They set the bar high this year with a sterling performance, which encapsulated the essence of Christmas and the message for peace and giving.

Then on Thursday with the halls decked and the trees decorated and the smell of cinnamon and Christmas spices wafting down the corridors, the children enjoyed their annual Christmas Challenge Day.

Every year the children split into four house groups and enjoy a fun filled day of Christmas activities. This year was no different - the children were busy making and decorating biscuits to sell after school, as well as cards,

tags and a variety of seasonal ornaments. The pupils also created games, which they then made during the day.

After school parents and children were invited into the hall to buy the delicious treats and play the numerous games.

The children compete to be the house making the most profit and thus be awarded the coveted Challenge Cup. The money raised is then used to fund further Challenge Days during the year.

The next day saw a visit from Santa; who made a special trip before flying back to the North Pole; much to the delight of the children.

The school then delighted their parents and carers by getting everyone into the Christmas spirit with the Middle Phase performance; which told the tale of the Nativity through the eyes of six donkeys!

Lastly the Upper Phase Christmas performance

was held at St. Nicholas’ Church in North Walsham, which saw another year of the church filled to the brim. All of the year groups performed Christmas songs and recited poems throughout the evening with a special performance from the school choir.

The school wishes to thank all the parents and helpers for their help at all of the events and for all the kind donations they received from the community. It truly was a time of giving!

Pupils in Years 3 and 4 at St Nicholas House School are celebrating after winning a full classroom pack of Lego in a nationwide competition.

Rebecca Hitchens, their class teacher, explains “I have always loved Lego and one of my favourite teaching projects was mounting the Lego Olympics in the old fish shop in North Walsham, so when I saw that Hope Education were offering a free sample pack of the new ‘story starter’ Lego I sent off for it at once. There was also a nationwide competition - teachers were asked to make up a story with their class using the sample pack, photograph it and marshal it into a comic strip using the on-line software and email a screen shot for a chance to win a full classroom pack of Lego worth ÂŁ650. To my delight and amazement our story “Sooty and the spidersâ€? won and we look forward to building, telling and sharing lots of great stories in the future!â€?

We all love our pets but one local goldfish owner has certainly demonstrated his affection by spending £300 on a life saving operation to relieve his fish of constipation.

The owner took his poorly fish to Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham where vet Faye Bethell told him it was constipated and an operation would cost about £300.

The goldfish was constipated because he had a lump blocking his bottom, rather than because of his diet or any other reason," said Miss Bethell.

The operation, which took almost an hour, was performed by Miss Bethell, assisted by two veterinary nurses.

‘One nurse bubbled anaesthetic gas through

in exotics as well as the more usual pets, a year ago Miss Bethell has performed a varied range of operations including removing a skin tumour from a two-inch long hognose snake which weighed just 12g, taking out a stone from the 5mm-wide ureter of a guinea pig, treating sugar gliders (a gliding possum) for a poor diet and a degu (a large rat-like rodent) for diabetes, removing an air-rifle pellet discovered lodged under the skin during a routine booster jab check from a Mundesley cat, working with wildlife rescue groups to save an injured sparrowhawk which has since been successfully released into the wild, spending Boxing Day operating to remove a corn on the cob which had got trapped in a dog’s intestines, as well as making a puppy vomit after it had eaten its owner’s pills and most recently castrating a skunk named Cadbury.

“There was nothing special about the fish. The owner just liked it a lot. At the end of the day they are all pets and everybody does have a commitment to their pet," Miss Bethell said, adding ‘but that was an expensive little goldfish’.

‘It’s been an absolutely brilliant year with lovely clients and lovely animals, it has exceeded my expectations and I can’t believe the variety we have had’.

Make a New Years’ Resolution to support the nook appeal

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is calling upon the people of Norfolk to make an extra special New Years’ resolution for 2015 to support the nook appeal.

The nook appeal was launched on 25 November in the presence of the charity’s Royal Patron, The Duchess of Cambridge, outlining the vision for a new purpose-built children’s hospice which will cost £10m to build and equip. The new hospice will replace the current facility in Quidenham which is extremely restricted in its facilities and development.

There are many ways in which you can make New Years’ resolutions which not only benefit you as an individual, but also the many life-threatened children, young people and their families who will benefit from your fundraising efforts.

Getting healthy is always top of the list, and there’s plenty of ways to do it and raise vital funds. You could get sponsored to go on a diet, give up smoking or drinking alcohol and you could also donate the money you save to the appeal too.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although we closed for re-homing over the Christmas break to allow our fosterers (who are all volunteers) an opportunity to spend some time with their families, we were very busy just before and also after the holiday period. Several of the cats and kittens were re-homed before Christmas. Others went to their new homes after the Christmas break because their new families were having visitors and it would not be the ideal time to introduce a new cat or kitten to their new home. This has continued into the New Year with several more cats and kittens being either re-homed or reserved.

One of our long term residents, namely Dash, is one of the cats re-homed since the beginning of the year. This dear little girl, one of the many black cats we have recently found new homes for, was very stressed when she came into care and took some time to settle and gain confidence. Part of the problem had been living in a home with other cats so we knew that she needed to be the only cat in the household.

Although other people had been to see her she had not let them see what a delightful girl she was. However, when her new family came she had responded positively to their attentions and before too long was happy to sit on the gentleman’s lap in her pen. Dash had obviously made up her mind that this was her family and is now very happy in her new home.

The cats and kittens that remain in care range in age from 1 month old to 15 years. They include some of our longer term residents who will need homes with experienced cat people, plus the kittens, most of which are either black or white. Working with cats you tend not to worry about what colour it is but what is its temperament and character. However, whatever their colour or temperament we do love them all, even the naughty ones.

Norfolk Churches from the Air

Mike Page and Pauline Young A new book from Poppyland Publishing

Norfolk Churches from the Air provides a new perspective on the county’s famous churches.

Stand anywhere in Norfolk and you’re likely to see four or five towers - take to the air and look down to see many more from a very different angle. Mike’s photos feature regularly in the local press and this new title makes a fascinating addition to the range of books he has already produced.

Mike has been flying and taking photographs for over 40 years. The combination of these skills enables him to make the most of the opportunities when weather and in particular light are right for the cameraman. His collection of aerial photographs now extends to over a 100,000 images and he is confident

there will be more books to come. For Poppyland Publishing, he has already made valuable contributions to Maritime Norfolk Part 2 and to the new history of Wells next the Sea, where pictures from above very much add to the story being told.

Pauline Young’s text does not seek to cover exhaustively the history of each building but provokes interest through some facts and figures and guides us to other information sources. The book notes the intention of the church builders to reach for the heavens, whilst providing markers to those journeying across the county. Frank Blyth, a Suffolk-based photographic judge, had a difficult time deciding the winners for the North Walsham Photographic Group’s 4th quarterly competition.

The subject was ‘At Work’, a wide ranging theme which generated a massive variety of images, displaying creative candour and technical prowess. He selected 2 images, both very different in ideas and execution.

but few have successfully captured. Kev took it while at the Fairhaven Water Gardens at South Walsham at one of their Halloween nights. It was not an easy shot to take, and he had to reduce the exposure considerably to capture the detail of the flames, while not losing the fire eater’s face. He used

Ken Yerrill’s wonderful wildlife image of ‘Mum at work’, depicting a House Sparrow feeding its young, is illustrative of his superlative wildlife photography, of which he is a master.

The second winner, Kev Osborne’s ‘Fire Eater’, is an evocative image depicting spectacular danger in a situation many of us have witnessed,

a Canon EOS 7D, set to f/16, with an exposure time of 1/100 sec, with ISO 100.

Career Success for Paston Photography Student

Twenty-five AS & A2 Photography students visited London for a tour of two exhibitions and an introduction to the studio of internationally renowned English photographer and Magnum Photo Agency member Martin Parr.

Our guide to his studio was Louis Little, a former Paston photography student who now works for Martin Parr as an assistant. Having attained a first class degree at Plymouth University, Louis worked as an intern in studios in Brighton and then gained a similar position within Martin, leading to a full-time post where he has had the opportunity to assist in the curation of exhibitions of the photographer’s work in Qatar and at the new Media Space gallery at the Science Museum in London. Louis was able to give our Paston students an insight into his role in archiving Martin’s work and how he

questions on his work before leaving on assignment. This was an excellent opportunity to make a connection with our student’s own studies and their potential future careers and creative path.

Our next stop was the Barbican Art Centre to see an outstanding exhibition of photography exploring architecture in the landscape “Constructing Worlds – Photography & Architecture in the Modern Age”. The location itself is an amazing example of post war utopian urban planning to photograph for the students. We then went on to the Victoria Photo: Greg Hayward & Albert Museum to see a retrospective exhibition of the renowned portrait and has been able to understand the significance of fashion photographer Horst P. Horst whose his photography in documenting contemporary sophisticated use of lighting was particularly culture and particularly the British identity. inspiring for our A2 students who are currently working on their studio lighting coursework.

Obesity is a major worldwide issue. It puts us at a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, some cancers and a large number of other medical problems. Unfortunately some of us struggle to achieve weight loss without any help. Rapid weight loss achieved by crash diets can be temporary and result also in muscle loss and saggy skin.

We have devised a weight loss program in conjunction with the Pronokal system which is a very effective physiological form of treatment for achieving weight loss. It is based on reduction of carbohydrates and fats and utilising protein sources. We see weight loss but preservation of muscle mass and skin tone. We also use external ultrasound to melt difficult to reach areas of fat under the skin. The treatment plan includes a customised dietary program. It is conducted under medical supervision

and complemented by a multidisciplinary team of professionals (registered dieticians, psychological adviser and personal trainer).

Typically 80% of target weight is achieved in the first stage of the treatment programme – 7 to 10kg weight loss in a month is not unusual.

We also use ultrasound cavitation and radio frequency machine to mobilise fat cells from diet and exercise resistant body areas to achieve weight reduction. We recommend a minimum of six sessions, once every 2-3 weeks.

Two serving members of RNLI Cromer who got engaged on 24 December 2013, married at Gretna Green Christmas week 2014.

RNLI Cromer crew members Rose Keating and David Syer have been a couple for two years. Rose works for Norfolk County Council as a Mathematics advisor to schools and David in logistics.

Rose has been a serving member of RNLI Cromer shore crew for 6 years, having moved to Norfolk nearly 12 years ago, although David only met her just over 2 years ago.

Soon after meeting Rose, David decided to also join the RNLI lifeboat crew, because it would mean they would have a joint interest and could spend more time together.

The wedding clothes had a definite RNLI connection with the happy couple adorning their wedding clothes with yellow RNLI socks for the groom and boots for the bride!!

From the opening of our Community CafĂŠ in Cromer in March to our Friends In Flanders project in partnership with Halsey House in the autumn, the year has been one success after another. Our core businesses of Social Activities, Work Skills, Supported Living and Youth Services have continued to flourish.

The last few weeks leading up to Christmas were busier than ever for our catering team with dozens of festive dinners and parties on top of our normal lunch clubs. The cafĂŠ too has shown no sign of easing up since the tourists have all gone home. We are still busy Tuesdays to Saturdays which are our winter opening days.

We are grateful to our trustees, volunteers, and staff for their hard work in making About With Friends the success it is but we are also very grateful to our community partners, our clients and customers, and everyone who works with us for their part in our accomplishments.

Most of all, we would like to thank our members for their continued enthusiasm and encouragement because everything we do we do because our members want it.

When Father Christmas went to see the afternoon performance of The Cromer Christmas Show on Sunday 21 December he also had in his mind a 9-year-old boy named Ollie who is undergoing cancer treatment at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Ollie and his family regularly holiday in Cromer with their relatives who own The Grove Hotel on Overstrand Road.

After judging the best dressed Christmas couple from the audience Father Christmas asked them all to dig deep and support Ollie’s fund-raising appeal to raise money for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital ward to make things more comfortable for the children who, like Ollie, are undergoing chemotherapy. Thanks to the generosity of the audience and other donations Ollie’s fund-raising appeal is now totalling an amazing £5,308.

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind

On Thursday 4 December the Club held its annual Christmas Lunch at the Community Centre. The weather was much warmer than last year, bringing some old faces back.

The entertainment was supplied by the Mundesley Singers, who sang some lovely carols and, of course, we held the annual Christmas raffle for some wonderful prizes donated by local business including Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, Sainsbury North Walsham, Waitrose North Walsham, and Tesco branches at Aylsham and Stalham. We also had gifts from Morrisons at Cromer, Julie Mowbray Photographer, Aylsham and Davenport's Magic Kingdom. We would like to thank them all.

The Round Table donated £200 and there were also donations of £50 from Inner Wheel Club, North Walsham and East Coast Plastic plus some toys. A special thanks goes to Stephanie & Kathleen Mace who run fundraising events for the club. We would also like to thank Cynthia Clare and her helpers for making the Christmas Fayre and Bingo Evening such a success, raising over £900 for the club and other charities.

2014 was a great year for the club - we introduced some new entertainment and also welcomed back some of the members’ favourite regulars.

We would like to wish all our members and all the businesses that have helped us a very Happy New Year.

Burns Night celebrations return to Aylsham

A little slice of Scotland will be coming to Aylsham on Saturday 24 January when Cittaslow Aylsham and Slow Food Aylsham present their annual Burns Night Supper. Now in its 4th year, the Supper, to be held in the Town Hall, will cater for up to 90 guests with a traditional Scottish menu.

Haggis is, of course, the principal ingredient of Burns Night celebrations and this will be accompanied by the equally traditional Neeps and Tatties. The wonderful concoction of raspberries, oats and cream, with a hint of whisky, which together make that Scottish delight Cranachan, will round off the meal while a ‘wee dram’ will be available for the Toasts. There will also be a licensed bar.

Recognising that not everyone can be a fan of traditional Scots cuisine, the organisers will be providing cottage pie, including a vegetarian option, as an alternative to the Haggis.

Helping the evening along will be The Address to the Haggis, the address to The Immortal Memory and the Toast to the Lassies, with appropriate Scottish music all the while.

My 12-hour shift with ambulance crews from Cromer

Twelve hours plus on an ambulance on a cold New Year’s Eve in Norfolk may not be everybody’s ideal way of seeing out the old year.

But it was a chance to see how our ambulance service is performing under pressure.

After campaigning for more than two years for a better ambulance service for North Norfolk, I wanted to experience how the service is faring in the middle of winter, particularly with the rising demands on hospital A&Es.

I have nothing but praise for the crew of paramedics I went out with from their Cromer base. They were great, thoroughly professional during a busy, unpredictable shift. But what I discovered also shocked me.

Three things stand out: – The much-reported pressures on A&E: late morning on new year’s eve there were 13 ambulances waiting outside the Norfolk & Norwich hospital; we

were waiting for spaces in the corridor to leave patients on trolleys while patient assessments were done in the back of the ambulance. Later in the day the hospital declared a major internal incident as they tried to discharge patients to clear much-needed beds, the start of what the media deemed a 'crisis' across the country.

– While we were all waiting at the hospital, there were no ambulances available in north Norfolk. And when we left the hospital, we were diverted to a call in Norwich, and the crews told me this was the norm most days.

Ambulances don’t always go back to base and it’s usual for the crew not to return to Cromer until the end of shift.

– Often the 111 service creates additional workload and often unnecessarily sends an ambulance on blues when it is not needed.

sheet of questions asking questions like ‘is the patient alert?’ without being able to ask more probing questions, a ‘no’ response triggers an ambulance call out. Fortunately during my shift all of the calls we attended during the day on New Year’s Eve were for people in need of urgent medical help.

Last weekend the ambulance trust saw a 26% increase in calls compared to 2013 but it has had no extra funding. No wonder the service is under pressure. Staff on the frontline keep it going for all of us, covering miles and miles across Norfolk. Without them, heaven help us.

You never know when you might need an ambulance.

Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust set to leave

When Clive and Berni Sanham opened their first computer shop in Co-operative Street they never imagined how busy it would become in three short years. Since opening, the business has gone from strength to strength and now employs three full-time staff. Shortly after opening, Jon Hayman started as an apprentice (at Level 3) and rapidly developed a good rapport with customers, embracing PCSimple’s policy of delivering exceptional customer service. Jon passed his apprenticeship with flying colours and is now an important part member of the businessteam.

The part-time Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust is to depart from the organisation earlier than planned with the board advertising his post just 11 months after he launched his two-year turnaround plan.

As more customers heard about the shop via wordof-mouth, Clive soon found that he needed someone to help with administration.

Fortunately, his daughter Nikki, who had recently graduated with an Occupational Therapy Degree from the UEA, stepped in to help out and is now an essential part of the business. As the work increased it was again apparent that more staff were required and Scott Raddon, who had been volunteering while at school, signed on as a level two apprentice; this is ongoing and PCSimple is looking forward to keeping him as a full-timer if he passes.

With the amount of business being conducted, and increased staffing, it soon became apparent that there was hardly any room left for customers and Clive started looking for alternative premises within his budget.

Finally, a suitable venue was found. PCSimple will soon be moving to its new site at 44E Station Road. Clive and all the staff are looking forward to having ‘space to breathe’. Clive is particularly happy to get his own work area at last and customers will be appreciative of the space as well.

Anthony Marsh was hired by the Trust earlier this year to improve poor ambulance response times and to restore trust in our local ambulance service. However improvements have been slower than expected with more varied response times in North Norfolk and with national media attention over Mr Marsh's pay packet. There had also been concerns about Mr Marsh running two ambulance trusts on different sides of the country at the same time.

Act on Ambulances campaigners from the North Norfolk Labour Party have claimed that the departure of Mr Marsh was another fiasco for the Trust.

Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "This is another extraordinary fiasco at our East of England Ambulance Trust. Performance is still below the expected levels and this news will leave staff feeling further demoralised at their busiest point in the year.

This departure is likely to make things worse especially as we are only now entering the winter period where pressures are growing and we need strong leadership. We know from two years ago what happens if there isn't the strong leadership at difficult times. In North Norfolk our response times remain the worst in the region and our residents deserve better. Worsening response times are now not exclusive to Norfolk and the picture across the country is not rosy particularly with the issues in Accident and Emergency. Health ministers need to act as well as the Trust. I hope they will take time to find a replacement for Mr Marsh to ensure it is well-led and well-managed, and delivering a quality, reliable, and timely service."

Paternalism –v- Empowerment Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Many decades ago the section of the court system that then dealt with those who were mentally incapable was the Chancery Division of the High Court which was said to deal with ‘wills, wives and wrecks’. In other words, probate matters (as now), matrimonial issues (now dealt with by their own court called The Family Court), and shipping matters. The ‘wrecks’ were maritime rather than human.

Cases relating to those without mental capacity were headed ‘In Lunacy’. That was an age of paternalism; and not always very benign.

Gradually the law in relation to those lacking mental capacity entered a world of kinder paternalism where others knew best and the

mentally incapable were treated almost as children.

The landscape has yet again changed and we are now in a culture where those lacking mental capacity are to be ‘empowered’ wherever possible to make decisions with whatever means and support is available.

The practical effect on those managing the affairs of those without mental capacity, whether by a Power of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) or as a Court-appointed ‘Deputy’ is significant.

The terminology of the Court and its administrative system is only slowly catching up with the new ethos. The administrative head of the system is called ‘The Public Guardian’ (which even though I have been dealing with his office for more than 20 years still carries ‘caped-crusader’ connotations for me).

A dazzler of a display

Crowds of locals and visitors enjoyed a dazzling and spectacular start to 2015 at Cromer’s New Year’s Day Fireworks. The breathtaking display saw over 400 fireworks launched off Cromer Pier and out to sea in the country’s biggest New Year’s Day firework show. The event attracted over 20,000 people on a still winter’s day.

Spectators lined the cliff tops and promenade to watch the 15-minute extravaganza explode in the skies and on the surface of the sea.

Over 400 fireworks produced 2000 bursts of stars and special effects culminating in a silver red and gold finale fired from the whole length of the pier.

Clive Casburn from Premiere Fireworks said “the display has become, for us, one of the most interesting of our annual displays. The pier has proved a marvellous setting. Conditions remained good throughout the day - it only started raining just after the show. I don’t think Cromer has seen so many people for the New Year’s Day fireworks. The show went well especially the water shells on the mill pond sea.”

Local attractions and traders opened up their shops, eateries, museums and businesses on, what is now, one of the town’s busiest days of the year.

A record £9,500 was collected from the crowd which will be spent on next year’s display with donations given to local Cromer charities.

For the third year running the organisers are running a Photography Competition which is open to adults aged 17+ who attended the event.

The winner will have their image turned into the official poster for the 2016 New Years Day Firework event, as well as use in other promotional material.

Local electrical retailer Hughes Plus are to offer the winner the latest Samsung 40” led TV worth £400.

Manager of Hughes Plus in Cromer, Simon Morton said “we are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to support such a spectacular local event as the New Year’s Day Firework display. We felt the prize should reflect this and encouraged ‘snappers’ to get snapping and produce some great local images!”

Chair of Cromer Fireworks Committee Jim Bond said, “I hope everybody had a good new year and enjoyed the fireworks. It was nice to see the town so busy with people enjoying a day out.

I would like to thank everyone involved in making this year’s display a great success again, and in helping to raise £9,500. Any local group interested in a small grant should contact Cromer Town Council.

Thanks again to St John Ambulance, the Police, and Fire Brigade, Cromer Museum, the pier management, NNDC and the many collectors. A special thank you to St Peter and St Paul’s Church for use of the church, for refreshments and a warm seat.

Particular thanks to Premier Fireworks, who again put on a very special and impressive display, receiving many favourable comments on the night. The setting of Cromer Pier makes this a unique display.

The publicity provided by the media, and local radio stations, is very much appreciated in letting everyone know the ‘what’ and ‘where’.

North Walsham Table Tennis Both a win and a loss for each home team in premier division

In the Premier Division, NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Howard Lupton hosted Gresham’s School A’s Robin Thaxter, Hubert Cheng and Haken Bennell.

A hard hitting contest saw Cheng defeat Baldock-Yaxley 11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8 and he followed that with two wins in straight to complete a terrific maximum. Bennell lost out to both Baldock-Yaxley and a jet-lagged Lupton in four, but upped his game to defeat Beane in five. Beane and Baldock-Yaxley won the doubles in straight against Thaxter and Cheng, but Thaxter took a maximum with no sets dropped as Gresham’s won the match 7-3.

NWSCA bounced back the following week as they recorded a 10-0 win against Poachers.

NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Richard Westgate hosted Shark’s Chris Marshall and Steve and Matt Hudson in a marathon featuring six five-setters which were split equally between the two teams – after

Elliott opened with a win in four against Matt Hudson he completed his maximum with two of those five-setters. Price defeated Marshall but lost out to Matt Hudson both in five, while Marshall and Steve Hudson won a tense late-night doubles against Elliott and Westgate 10-12, 13-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-5. After losing to Steve Hudson in five, Westgate beat Marshall in four and kept his cool to defeat Matt Hudson 11-8, 12-10, 12-10. Price attacked fiercely to beat Steve Hudson in straight as NWSCB won 7-3. The following week NWSCB lost out 6-4 to Backhanders – Paul Warner came back from 1-5 down in the decider to beat Westgate and the match was not decided until the fifth set of the doubles.

The contrasting fortunes continued for Walsham’s third team in the top flight as NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Ray Howe and Philip Stone visited Hunworth Poachers. Help shape the future of Stalham Sports Centre

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is seeking feedback from the local community to help shape sports and activity provision at its community sports centre in Stalham.

In its bid to contribute to the health and wellbeing of its residents, and to encourage greater participation in sport and exercise, NNDC is asking what they would like to see offered at their local sports centre.

Residents are being encouraged to have their say by completing an online survey at www.northnorfolk.org. All completed surveys will be entered into a prize draw to win a free monthly swim pass at Victory Swim & Fitness Centre in North Walsham.

Stalham Sports Centre plays host to a variety of great value activities for children during the school holiday periods. These range from traditional sports such as football and cricket to archery and rounders. Completing the survey will give people the chance to indicate what they’d like to see form part of the holiday activity programme in future.

The centre has plenty to offer, including a sports hall, a multi-use games area and tennis courts. Each can be used to host a range sporting activities, and NNDC is committed to using the feedback to help improve its activity offer to fit the needs of local people.

The following week NWSCD lost 6-4 to Outlaws but they were effectively a single point away from a draw as Mary Sawyer missed a couple of match-point chances in the fourth before losing to Colin Humphries in five.

In the First division there was an exciting conclusion to the doubles as NWSCE hosted Aylsham D – Stuart Hook and Joel Lodge won the first two sets for the hosts before Dave Johns and Ian Potter levelled for the visitors.

Aylsham led the decider 6-1 before the home pair nearly made a comeback and had a match-point at 10-9, but the Aylsham duo won 12-10 to complete their team’s 8-2 win.

A derby in the division saw NWSCC beat NWSCE 8-2 while in the Second division NWSCF won 7-3 away to Crabs.
