See all 70 lifebuoys together for one time only – local people, include lifebuoys decorated and buy one… or two! by artists Claire Knight, Jenny Griffin and North Norfolk has been awash with 70 decorated lifebuoys since April as part of the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival’s annual art trail and you will soon have the chance to own one!

For one day only on Sunday 25th August they will all be on show together before being auctioned off to the highest bidder, raising funds for local charities. On the same day the Festival will also be hosting their annual World Pier Crabbing Championships from 10am – 1pm as well as hosting an array of local craft stalls along the prom.

From Fakenham to Cromer and Sheringham the lifebuoys are on the trail until Friday 16th August before they all go into the Grand Lifebuoy Auction on Sunday 25th August at 2pm.

The auction will be hosted by auctioneer Martyn Fox on Cromer Pier Forecourt who has helped raise over £24,000 on behalf of the Festival through the previous three Festival charity auctions. The auction will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the lifebuoys displayed together which will be on view from 11am on the day of the auction.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon With warmer weather forecast and the light evenings giving everyone time to enjoy their gardens I thought I would give you a great recipe for a great Barbecue Sauce.

Of course you could always leave the barbecue and come along to the White Horse and enjoy a superb meal, relax in our garden whole the children play. Don’t forget our charity car wash raising money for Nelson’s Journey on Saturday 27 July. We are serving Hot Bacon Rolls from 8am as well as our usual White Horse Breakfast so while the volunteers wash your car you can enjoy some good food and a chat. From 10am we will be offering a slice of delicious homemade cake and a coffee so if you missed breakfast you can still enjoy a snack while waiting for your car to be washed.

Our usual Bar and Restaurant Menu will also be available from 12noon, so why not make it lunch at the White Horse? Bring your friends and their cars and turn it into a car wash party! The Car Wash is just £5 per car with all proceeds going to the charity. Car Wash opens at 8am until 2pm

Rock and Rieu at Reepham Festival

Organisers have announced the final line-up and performance times for the weekend of 10th and 11th August.

An eclectic and diverse range of music is on offer, from roots, rock and reggae to folk, classical and contemporary. Sixteen different acts will be performing twenty concerts at three venues across Reepham itself and also at the famous heritage railway station at nearby Whitwell.

Whilst rhythm and blues maestros Dr Feelgood and rock veterans Buster James will be headlining the outdoor stage, an equally popular draw will undoubtedly be a concert by the Imperial Vienna Orchestra in nearby St Michael’s Church.

The orchestra has already garnered favourable attention in the region with concerts providing the music for increasingly popular, authentic Viennese dance events. Conductor Dario Salvi is a man of many musical talents – he also fronts jazz / funk outfit Groovapolitan, who wowed the festival crowds last year with their infectious brand of music, has a wealth of experience conducting brass bands and concert bands and holding the groove with the Lee Vasey Band.

‘It will be great to be back at Reepham – and in a completely different guise. Last year I wore a Stetson, this year it will be an evening suit’ laughed Dario. ‘We have a wealth of talented musicians in the orchestra, many of them

highly experienced, and we deliver a range of music from Strauss to Andre Rieu, so festival goers can expect the unexpected.’

Festival chairman Steve Jenkins is especially happy about the Imperial Vienna Orchestra being on the bill. ‘There’s already a buzz about their appearance at the festival and it’s the perfect complement to the rock acts performing on the outdoor stages. We are very pleased indeed to welcome the Orchestra to Reepham.

‘The church has exceptionally good acoustics and has proved to be highly popular as a festival venue over the years. The fun bit will be trying to fit the entire orchestra at the front of the church’ he smiled. ‘but that will just add to the atmosphere!’

The now-famous twin stages in the main arena minimise the time between bands so that the entertainment continues without a break from mid-day on the Saturday through to the evening, with the acoustic stage running in parallel. Norwich-based Epic Studios are supporting one of the outdoor stages and will be offering special festival-only discounts for forthcoming gigs at their Magdalen Street venue.

Playing on the Sunday will be Dereham-based rockers Bad Touch, who have recently been chosen to tour with the likes of top UK band The Quireboys and Swedish band Bonafide, whilst BBC Folk Award nominee Luke Jackson will be appearing on both days.

The music runs over three stages on the Saturday, from mid-day to 8.30 in the evening, and starts again at the same time next day at nearby historic heritage site Whitwell Station. Full line-up is:

Saturday 10 August – Dr Feelgood, Buster James, Vagaband, Kaiser Thiefs, Raevennan Husbandes, Marina Florance, Dove & Boweevil, Inlay, Xenia Horne, Luke Jackson, the Imperial Vienna Orchestra, Stranger Culture, Tattooed Lies.

Sunday 11 August – Front Porch, Marina Florance, Inlay, Luke Jackson, Shock! Hazard, Bad Touch

Tickets have been held at last year’s prices £18 for a single weekend ticket with discounts for family tickets – but weekend camping tickets have now sold out. Tickets from www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk 01603 508050 and from Soundclash on St Benedict’s Street, Norwich and Very Nice Things in Reepham.

Steve Hewlett & who? will open Showcase Gallery

Steve Hewlett fans make a note in your diary for Thursday August 8th, because Steve is coming back to Norfolk for the opening of the Showcase Gallery in North Walsham.

Showcase are celebrating the re-opening of the refurbished ground floor showroom, which will feature the art gallery, gift shop and their extended range of books and maps including many special local interest publications.

North Walsham Artists Art Exhibition

Come along to North Walsham Artists’ latest summer exhibition in the beautiful setting of Thorpe Market Church. A dozen artists from the local area will be showing a wide range of artistic work from oil and water colour paintings and photography to recycled textiles and paper mache creations and scrap metal sculptures.

The Show is free entry and light refreshments also will be available.

It runs from Friday 16 to Wednesday 21 August and the Church is signposted off the A149 from Cromer to North Walsham.

Info: Carol Gibbons on 01263 834451 carolgibbons341@btinternet.com

Photographs of North Walsham from the Past

Steve Hewlett and friends from the Seaside Special Photo courtesy Carla Marfleet

Steve of course was a finalist on Britain's Got Talent last month, finishing a valiant fourth, and was the funniest act on the show and to many would have been a worthy winner.

Of course the big question is who will Steve bring along to the event - Arthur Lager? the Simon Cowell lookalike or even Sinitta?

Whoever he brings, this is bound to be loads of fun as Steve and mystery guest will be signing autographs from 12 noon to 1 pm. Showcase have told North Walsham Times there will be a cake to cut as well - who will cut it? Surely not Arthur, but you never know.... Make sure you get to Showcase at 40a Market Place in plenty of time.

From Monday 5 to Friday 9 August, there will be an exhibition of photographs in the Council Offices, New Road, North Walsham, from 9.30am to 2.30pm. There will be no charge for admission so do come along to see the photographs and chat with members of the North Walsham and District Community Archive Group.

Mike Ling, the Chairman of the Group, is always on the lookout for 'new' possibly unpublished photographs of North Walsham in the past which can be used in future slide shows or added to the North Walsham and District Community Archive.

If you have any you are willing to share, please contact Mike on 01692 405995 or mike.dilys@gmail.com.

‘FREE AT LAST’

North Walsham Town Council took on the lease for NNDC’s part of Midland Road Car Park on 1 July, so until early December 2014 it will remain free to all users.

The negotiations sadly have taken almost 16 months and have been an extremely difficult and an unwarranted time consuming process, but the Town Council is happy to have achieved its objective, as we have always believed that Midland Road and Mundesley Road should remain free and not ‘season ticket’ only.

The total cost to the Town Council is about £3000 for the duration, with hopefully an option to continue after the end date if the Town Council thinks that the scheme has worked well, funds can be found, and the District Council wish to continue with leasing.

Sadly Mundesley Road ceased to be possible due to difficulties with the surface and real possibilities of the Town Council being faced with excessive expenditure.

However due to the Town Councils (and others) continued objection to the ‘Season Ticket’ plan for the Car Park the District Council have agreed to make it ‘Pay and Display’, but this will not take effect until towards the end of the year, so it will remain free until then.

North Norfolk beach huts and chalets – get 25% off weekly hire

Following a very successful promotion in the spring, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is to once again reduce the prices of its seaside beach huts and chalets in the autumn.

Having a base by the sea makes spending time at the beach so much easier, whether you use it to store beach essentials, as a place to get changed after a dip, or just want to shelter with a flask and a book from bracing breezes. And NNDC is giving local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a seaside beach hut or chalet at a special 25% discount rate this autumn.

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Our fabulous resort beaches are always busy and we rarely have enough beach huts or chalets available to satisfy demand in the main summer holiday period. But earlier and later in the year we usually have a few vacancies. This year we thought it would be better to make them available at a lower price, so that they could all be used and enjoyed by more people. I hope lots of people will be able to take up this very special offer.

“The spring beach hut and chalet offer was a great success, bringing much enjoyment for local people and visitors, along with welcome additional income for the council. I really hope as many people will feel able to take advantage of the autumn discount.”

Subject to availability, the special offer applies to weekly lets of beach huts and chalets in Mundesley, Sheringham and Cromer from 6 September to1 November.

Prices normally start at £45 per week, so with the 25% discount some lucky people will be able to enjoy a hut or chalet for a week on one of north Norfolk’s fabulous beaches for not much more than £30, less than £5 a day, for up to a maximum of three weeks!

North Walsham Market Cross WI

Our speaker for the evening Marie Stevenson introduced us to the Landmark Trust. This charity purchases the smaller historic and architecturally interesting buildings, restoring them to an extremely high standard for self-catering holiday stays. We were shown slides of the many types of accommodation available such as Castles, Forts, Towers and even a Pigsty. The talk was extremely interesting and informative. Mrs Sylvia Le Mottée gave the vote of thanks on behalf of all the members.

Mrs Margaret Bane said that some new players had joined the darts team and that they had won their first match of the season against Marsham, they are playing their next game against Rackheath on 29 July. The bowling group is desperately short of players so they are stopping for a time until they can re-establish a team.

Some of the members visited Alby Craft and Gardens recently and had enjoyed an interesting day out.

Members were told that it had been a busy day at the North Walsham Fun day and our tinned goods stall had proved very popular and the money raised a boost to our funds.

The August garden party meeting is being held in the afternoon at the home of Mrs Joan Etherington.

The WI is holding a promotional event at North Walsham Community Centre on the 23 September from 2 to 4pm the event is free and open to all.

The next meeting will be 11 September.

We are a friendly group and extend a warm welcome to visitors and new members so come along and join us. Our meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at St Benet Hall, Vicarage Street, North Walsham. For membership information please contact Mrs Kim Reynolds on 01692 406246

North Walsham Junior School uses the inspiration and power of the London 2012 legacy to encourage more young people to do more sport

On Tuesday 25 June approximately 180 school children from North Walsham Junior School continued the London 2012 sporting legacy during Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week, by participating in a day of Old Fashioned Sports activities arranged by Linda Briggs of Lloyds TSB North Walsham.

The students of North Walsham Junior School are amongst an estimated three million young people who took part in Britain’s biggest

school sport event, Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week 2013, a unique initiative, delivered in partnership with the Youth Sports Trust, to encourage more young people across Britain to get involved in sport and continue the celebrations from last summer.

With egg and spoon, bean bag dash, drainpipe marble run and penny egg box drop, the pupils of North Walsham Junior School from Years 4, 5 and 6 enjoyed a day of sport as well as a power point presentation given by Ian Beasy from Lloyds TSB to Year 3 on his experiences as a Torch Bearer in the 2012 London Olympics. 2013 is the 5th year of Lloyds TSB’s partnership of the week, which is one of a number of

Sporting Spectacular!

The Olympic Games had nothing on Millfield Primary’s sports days, which saw three days of sporting events for each phase.

The events ranged from competitive races, javelin, long jump and hammer throwing for Upper Phase and in Middle Phase the children enjoyed the wheel barrow race, obstacle courses, competitive races and a tug of war.

The third day saw Early Phase competing in a selection of obstacle races including the old favourite, the egg and spoon race.

Thankfully the weather was on side this year and we managed to fit in all the sports days having five minutes to spare on the last day before the heavens opened!

Parents enjoyed themselves enormously and not only cheered on their own children but also

initiatives organised by the Youth Sport Trust to offer young people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports and activities.

Sheryl Isbell a HLTA at the school said the children had a really enjoyable day and tried their best at all the activities.

Olympic Gold Medallist Jason Gardener has supported Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week for many years and said “After the thrills of London 2012, it is fantastic to see schools like North Walsham Junior School continuing the London 2012 sporting legacy.”

encouraged the other pupils who were competing.

We finished off with a spectacular parent tug of war, mums v dads. Much to the delight of the children the mums won! Upper Phase traditionally finished off with the teachers race, where both Mr Lillistone and Mr Walder, who are not in least bit competitive, fought to the end seeing Mr Lillistone win and Mr Walder ‘slip’ at the end.

This year’s sports days were a great success, thanks to the organisation of all the staff involved, the attendance of the parents and the weather!

Mrs Herd, a teaching assistant and the sports assistant, helped organise the events which included an awards assembly the following day for At Poppies Day Nursery, we have been eagerly watching our birdbox each of the Phases. and the mummy and daddy bluetits who have been working very hard to feed their babies inside.

What are we waiting for?

The young have now fledged and life in the birdbox is now very quiet but we are continuing to have fun in the garden.

Funds for the new garden are growing, thanks to the proceeds of our ceilidh in June. Our thanks go to the band Acaysha and Steve from the Lighthouse Pub and all who supported the event.

'Protect Our Post' campaign launched to save Royal Mail from privatisation North Norfolk residents are being encouraged to call on government ministers to halt the sale of Royal Mail, through a new campaign launched earlier this month.

Protect Our Post is the latest campaign in a growing national movement which speaks out against the government’s proposals to sell off our country’s postal service.

Campaigners fears that the consequences of the privatisation of Royal Mail will be dire for rural areas such as north Norfolk, with services potentially being limited or stopped in our villages, isolating our increasing elderly population who cannot travel to nearby towns. Already the firm is being “fattened up” by increasing prices to push up profits ahead of its sale.

North Norfolk Labour Party, who are behind the campaign, have been on the streets of north Norfolk talking to shoppers about what is happening to one of our country’s most-valued assets. They are inviting residents to sign the online petition at www.protectourpost.com, and will be on the streets with more stalls in the coming weeks.

Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour Party, said “There is a growing momentum speaking out against the government’s plans for the sell-off of Royal Mail across the country, and we are pleased to be playing our part in north Norfolk. We believe these plans will be particularly dire for north Norfolk, a rural area with an increasing elderly population, because the services in the villages that do not make a profit are likely to be the first to go. Already the company is being fattened up by increasing the costs of postal services, and we fear this will continue to rise after privatisation. These plans, which were supported by our MP in his previous role as minister for postal affairs, are continuing to gather pace and we fear Royal Mail will be sold before the end of the year. This is why we are asking residents to register their anger online or through our postcards at our street stalls."

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

owners make is to get their pet neutered or we will take it back.

In a matter of days we have gone from having a reasonable number of kittens in care to having far too many, with lots more waiting to come in. The last two litters, totalling 10 kittens, arrived together with their mums, having been abandoned by their previous owners with the poor little mother cats having to fend not only for themselves but also their babies. In both of these instances other people cared enough to offer them shelter, contacted us to see whether we could possibly take them in and fed and looked after them until we had room. We have already had three other mums with four kittens each that arrived for the same reason and a further three young cats (and they really are not much more than kittens themselves) who have had kittens but not brought them out into the open yet. We do wonder why people get a pet when they are not prepared to look after them properly and abandon them without concern for their animal’s welfare. Fortunately they are still in a minority as most people act more responsibly. However, one thing we can be certain of is the fact they did not get them from us as one of the promises new

Other kittens have arrived from multi-cat households where the owners have let their cats breed and suddenly found they cannot cope with the numbers, and some where the kittens have been found with no mother in sight and the little ones have been too young to fend for themselves (three were even abandoned on a lady’s drive at one day old). We also see some where the owner contacts us because their cat has had kittens and they want to make sure they get good homes. Often the cat itself is very young and the owner has not been aware that she could become pregnant at such a young age. Cats can become pregnant from about 4 months old and can also have another litter while still feeding an existing one. We had experience of this last year when a young mum and her 9 week old kitten came into care, the kitten was re-homed and the next day mum produced another litter. I could provide lots more examples, but I won’t. However, I will just say, please get your cats neutered before you find you have a problem.

I see purple heather on the hill, Bright red poppies in the rye, The sun is shining brightly Against a clear blue sky. A thrush is eating berries In a Rowan tree, I get a little closer, He doesn’t notice me. The combines are busy, And making quite a dust, I must look for my paintbox, Painting nature is a must. I love to walk through the heather, On a warm summer’s day, The time goes so quickly when Good weather comes our way.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GROWING HERBS ON THE DANUBE although the use of the term ‘garden’ is a slight exaggeration there were indeed herbs growing on the deck although they were planted in a series of small containers. Most of the commonest herbs were there such as mint, sage and thyme and they looked well trimmed which would indicate that the chef did indeed use them when preparing the meals.

The temperatures and conditions on the Danube can be quite extreme, we had readings of 90 degrees plus but it can get very cold, wet and windy and if the herbs can survive in such difficult conditions it only confirms that we could all grow herbs in our own gardens, containers or on the window ledge.

Advertisements for river cruises seem to dominate television at the moment especially Viking who sponsor Midsommer Murders, Poirot and numerous other whodunnits. Their ships claim many features to attract customers including a walking track on the deck (26 laps to the mile), various games and sports including putting and outdoor chess and perhaps most surprisingly an organic herb garden ‘atop the deck’.

When we chose to travel along the Danube with this company I was interested to check whether there was in fact an herb garden and

Planting herbs in a container is particularly good because it means that you can have them in a convenient place near to the kitchen. It also means that it is possible to move the herbs around so that they receive the summer sun and the winter protection they require in order to survive. Containers can be planted up with herbs as easily as any other plants, look attractive and smell delicious. Variegated or coloured forms add extra interest.

Herbs can easily be grown from seed but to save time ready grown plants are always available from markets, garden centres, supermarkets and even your local greengrocer. If you have bought large plants split the clumps to make more plants and space them out in the container. Depending on the variety you should be able to fit six plants in a 12 inch container.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

The very hot weather we are experiencing at the moment is making our flowers bloom in a way that we have only been able to dream about in the last few years. We are so pleased to see that all the fund raising we have carried out in the last year has resulted in these glorious displays. The Church doorway is looking the best it has looked at any time during the last five years, and we must thank the ladies of the Church who have agreed to supply water.

Our new tubs which were installed last autumn are working really well, and having large water reservoirs in the bottoms means that there is never a shortage of water for the plants. Our two watering men go round

• Suitable herbs. Most herbs are suitable for containers, providing they have well-drained compost and a sunny position. Small herbs such as chives, basil, marjoram, oregano, parsley and sage are particularly suited to container cultivation. Larger herbs such as rosemary need regular trimming. Tender herbs such as coriander and basil are fairly easy to grow in a container if they are given winter protection, but - since these herbs often deteriorate over winter – they are best re-sown annually to ensure a new growth of vigorous plants. Mint is so invasive it is best planted in a separate pot. • Pesticides. Avoid pesticides whenever possible. If you must use them, select those suitable for use on edible crops and that have short persistence. Check for pests and diseases regularly and deal with them promptly. • Freezing to preserve. Store chopped herb trimmings in ice for use in the winter when herbs are scarce. Thaw, and drain them if necessary before use.

The cruise itself was excellent with passengers from all around the world, but the greatest number came from the USA, and the reason for this brings us back to the power of television. It seems that in America, Viking River Cruises sponsor Downton Abbey and many of the Americans we spoke to were absolutely fanatical about the programme and to satisfy them the two series of the programme were available, on demand, in the cabins. Bob Wilkinson

twice a week and make sure all is full. We are in the process of buying even more of this type of tub so, they will all be the same, and all benefit from the same system. We are however not so pleased to find that contractors are working in our beds on Yarmouth Road. Large plastic bases have been put on top of the flowers which are covered in dust and in a poor way. It seems such a shame that it is not possible for In Bloom to be advised in advance when this sort of work is about to take place, as this would then give us an opportunity to remove and store some of the more delicate plants until the work is finished. Perhaps some form of communication from who ever gives permission for this work to be done could be arranged in the future.

season ahead.

Michael Clarke, a member of the NNDC Foreshore team for ten years, and David Rigby, a relative newcomer with just two years to his name, have the enviable task of patrolling the district’s seaside promenades at Sheringham and Mundesley (Michael), and Cromer (David), helping, advising and supporting everyone having a day out at the coast. The jobs of the Foreshore team, which has been in existence since the early 1990s, include overseeing NNDC’s seaside chalet lettings, checking the condition of the proms, working closely with the three towns’ RNLI Lifeguards, and monitoring the cleanliness of their promenade ‘patches’.

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “The North Norfolk coast is unbeatable at any time of year and we want to ensure that everyone enjoys their visit to our coastal towns. Few places in the country can match North Norfolk’s performance on cleanliness and our promenades are the envy of most. Our Foreshore team is there to help and assist, and to check that everything is as everyone would expect, and they do a wonderful job.”

One regular issue they have to deal with is inconsiderate dog owners who allow their dogs to foul public areas, although this problem is diminishing as NNDC’s on-going ‘No Messing’ campaign, which tells dog-owners in no uncertain terms to ‘pick it up or face a fine’, begins to take effect.

Another is general behaviour on the proms, particularly in the busy summer months. All three proms provide the opportunity for visitors and local residents to enjoy themselves by the sea and they can be crowded with families, especially in the school holidays. Michael and David are keen to encourage people to have fun, that’s what visiting the seaside is all about, but this should not be at the expense of the enjoyment of others, so while cycling, skateboarding and other sports are welcome on the proms, they will always try to make sure that anyone engaged in these or any other activities is behaving appropriately and respecting other people’s enjoyment of the space.

Have your say on nuisance marketing calls says Norman Lamb MP North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb is urging people to respond to an inquiry into nuisance telephone marketing calls.

Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee is planning to hold an inquiry into Nuisance Telephone Calls and Text Messages. Unwanted marketing messages can be received by telephone or text message. Together with abandoned, including silent, telephone calls, these have led to many complaints to Members of Parliament.

“There are rules to regulate this sort of activity but many people feel those rules are being abused. Even my office number in North Walsham gets automated calls asking if we want to make a claim for a refund of Payment Protection Insurance!” says Mr Lamb.

Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office both have regulatory and enforcement responsibilities. The Telephone Preference Service allows individuals to have their telephone number removed from relevant marketing lists. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has decided to hold an inquiry into nuisance telephone calls and text messages, focusing on the current regulatory system and its enforcement, the effectiveness of the Telephone Preference Service and practical measures by communications service providers to curtail such communications.

Submissions have to be made in writing (in Word format) by e-mail to cmsev@parliament.uk and should have ‘Nuisance calls’ in the subject line. Submissions should be received by Thursday 15 August 2013.

North Norfolk rental market buoyed by homeowners increase in homeowners coming off the Scheme and rents and manages hundreds of jumping ship housing ladder and moving into rented rental properties across the region each month. According to figures released this week by the English Housing Survey, more people are quitting home ownership to become private tenants, than are leaving the private rented sector to become home owners.

The survey, which estimates a total of 22m homeowners in England moved into rented accommodation last year, stated that the number of owner-occupied homes fell from 14.8m in 2005/6 to 14.4m in 2011/12. At the same time, the number of privately rented households increased from 2.4m to 3.8m. Rechenda Smith, Lettings Manager at Harrisons said: “We are seeing a definite

accommodation for a whole host of reasons. There are those who start off renting for a short period of time between house sales who like the hassle-free aspect of being a tenant and stay on, people going through relationship breakdowns who divide the funds and go into longterm rented accommodation, and retired people who sell their homes and use the funds as a nest egg to see out the rest of their days and want all maintenance issues to be dealt with by a landlord.”

The English Housing Survey underlines that home ownership levels have continued to drop as the number of households in private rented accommodation has grown.

Established in 2010, Harrisons are licensed members of the National Approved Lettings

Rechenda continued: “The rental market is significantly buoyant at the moment. For example, last month we rented a three bed semi detached property in Sheringham which sparked a bidding war – we did a full day of viewings, every applicant wanted to take it and it went for £100 above the asking price over a three year tenancy. This is fairly unusual in the world of lettings but as demand outstripping supply, anything goes. We also had our record number of move-ins last month, with a high proportion of applicants coming out of the housing ladder, attracted to the convenience of renting rather than home owning.”

Pupil’s Winning Safety Poster to Take Pride of Place at North Walsham Housing Site

Local affordable housing developer Lovell visited North Walsham Junior School this month to present the prizes to winners of a recent safety poster competition for pupils.

regional health and safety advisor Paul Bocz. “The children clearly understood the safety message and had thought hard about how to communicate it – there were some great designs.”

As part of its ongoing safety awareness campaign Lovell, which is building 15 flats for Victory Housing Trust in North Walsham, asked pupils to design a poster warning other children of the dangers associated with construction sites.

The winning poster will be displayed on hoardings around the new housing site in Mundesley Road with the winner receiving a £15 book token and other prizes including a water bottle and bag. The runner-up and third prize winner received £10 and £5 book tokens plus

other Lovell goodies.

“The entries by the North Walsham Junior pupils were of a high standard,” says Lovell

The poster competition follows an earlier visit by Lovell to the school to raise awareness about the importance of staying clear of construction sites and activity. “It’s vital to get this safety message across to children and young people – especially at this time of the year with the summer holidays coming up,” says Paul Bocz of Lovell. “We link up with schools in the areas where we work whenever we can to ensure that children understand that they should never play on a construction site.”

AGA Roadshow Visits Waitrose Store

The AGA roadshow came to Waitrose North Walsham on earlier this month to display some of their traditional and also innovative products.

Customers were queueing up to ask questions and sample some of the Waitrose food cooked on one of the AGA ovens. Manager of the Holt shop Mary Bopst said "Our brands are very similar in terms of what we stand for, and coming to Waitrose today has been great in developing the links of high quality food cooked with a high quality oven".

Pictured are Mary Bopst and Matt Johnson (Customer Service Partner)

Waitrose Asst Customer Service Manager Andy Purser said "This is the second time we've worked alongside Mary and AGA. We both want our customers to share our passion for food and how it is cooked. Our customers hold those values high and seeing us in partnership works very well, and we look forward to continuing and developing these links for future events".

Reply to Grumpy Old Man,

May I just say how offended I was by your Grumpy Old Man column in your latest issue.

What a judgemental, ill informed load of rubbish. Particularly about mental health being an excuse - how on earth would he know how it feels to be so unfortunate as to suffer from this?

My own daughter, aged four, has learning problems and she is a bright little girl. Mental illness, and I include ADHD are a horrific illness and one which should not be berated.

This article belittles these illnesses and the stigma associated that nowadays health professionals are trying to eradicate. Yours sincerely, Name & address supplied

Dear Margaret,

The need for voluntary community transport services to take local people to medical appointments is increasing at ever greater speed, partly because of cutbacks in the NHS own in-patient transport, but also because of reductions in public transport. At NNCT (North Norfolk community Transport) the number of requests for our mediride service has doubled in the last year. We have been able to respond to most of these because we have also been able to recruit more volunteer drivers, but demand is still outpacing supply. We serve a wide area, alongside some other community car schemes, covering most of North and North-east Norfolk. The users of these services are massively grateful for the service provided as often there is no way of getting to their appointments by means that are remotely affordable or even available. The patient pays 42p a mile directly to the volunteer driver to cover the driver’s expenses.

If any reader could find some time to help with this service, no matter how occasionally, both NNCT and our service users would be immensely grateful. To find out more phone us on either 01263 839009 or 01692 500840, or email us admin@btconnect.com These same phone numbers and email address are equally relevant if any reader is in need of this service. Likewise, they can be used if anyone requires our dial-a-bus or group transport services to get out for shopping or to group meetings or outings.

Reply to Grumpy Old Man, Grumpy old man indeed.

More like ignorant old fool.

How dare you judge and criticise that which you, clearly, know nothing about.

In 2005 I was blessed with a seemingly healthy and happy baby boy, but as he grew it was apparent that he had various learning and behavioural issues. My very bright, very sweet little boy was diagnosed with ADHD as well as other learning issues.

He suffers tics, uncontrollable outbursts, severe anxiety and an inability to differentiate between fiction and reality amongst various other symptoms of this neurological disorder. You will never truly know the hardship and difficulty involved with caring for a child like this, and therefore you are not fit to judge it! ADHD is NOT an excuse for laziness or bad behaviour! Nor is it in any way convenient!! I can assure you sir, that my son is not constantly in front of the idiot box or games consoles, preferring family walks, reading, cooking and playing in the garden with his younger brother. In addition to your ignorance in this issue it is clear you are suffering 'in my day' syndrome.

Life has changed, science and technology has advanced. Of course you didn't play xbox in your day! I very much doubt that they existed at that time!

If you took your blinkers off you'd see a large majority of local children being actively involved in Scouts/Cubs, sports clubs etc. On top of which the children are furiously fighting for a skate park (an outdoor activity!) and a lift on the ban of scooters and skates on the promenade, which appeared without notice, robbing the children of another place to enjoy. What is next? A ban on buckets and spades?!

My message to you is simple. Keep your ignorant and obnoxious comments to yourself until you have all the facts. I sincerely hope you never have to live through the hardship of having a child with mental or learning difficulties, but then if you had, I guarantee that you would never have put pen to paper. Name and address supplied

P.S. I would suggest that your 'passenger' was either very rude (not differently abled), or you were just boring.

Yours faithfully, Mollie Whitworth (NNCT Trustee)

Dear Margaret,

North Walsham Library is running a children’s Summer Reading Challenge from 20 July.

To link in with this the library will help me with my fundraising efforts for Quidenham (East Anglian Childrens Hospices). I need small gift bags, new or used, which I will fill and then sell to raise money for Quidenham. Any donations of bags can be left at the library. Thank you, Maureen Dewhurst

Summer holiday activities in Aylsham

The summer school holiday can sometimes be difficult for mums and dads looking for something special to occupy their youngsters. Well help is at hand - at least for one morning in the week.

During the second half of July and throughout August, Aylsham Country Market craft producers will be offering a variety of activities, specifically aimed at children, in the Town Hall each Friday morning during the six week holiday. From making Japanese braid, fridge magnets or dreamwalkers to knitting or crochet, there will be something to keep young minds and hands occupied, perhaps while parents enjoy a cup of tea and cake in the Country Market Café.

Aylsham Country Market, a cooperative of local home-based producers, is every Friday morning in Aylsham Town Hall from 8.30am to noon. Its craft section features knitted goods, greeting cards, gifts and jewellery etc while there is a superb range of home-cooked food, including savouries, cakes, desserts and chilled goods. Also on offer are vegetables, eggs and fruit in season while in addition to tea and cake, the café offers bacon rolls, sausage rolls and a selection of drinks.

For more details of Country Market activities, or if you are interested in joining the cooperative as a producer, contact Debra Kidd on 01263 862396.
