Summer Term at Little Nick’s Nursery

Little Nick’s Nursery and Reception class at St. Nicholas House School, North Walsham, have been enjoying a summer term packed with activities from the roars of the dinosaurs on their visit to the Dinosaur Adventure Park at Weston Longville to the samba dancing of the musical ‘Wormzz’ that they helped perform to the school parents in June.

Grumpy Old Man Sorry – what did you say?

Whilst driving into Norwich recently I was relating a tale pertinent to my passenger, but when I paused for her reaction, none came.

Glancing across, I saw the reason why – she was texting, engrossed, thumbs busy on her mobile phone and she hadn’t heard a word I said.

When I started secondary school at the age of 11, on the first day of term I carried home a letter from the school to my parents which requested that they must ensure I had a quiet place in which to do my homework, preferably in my own room and on no account should there be any extraneous noise such as a radio because they believed children will develop the ability to shut out such distraction and be more likely to switch off their teacher’s voice and allow their minds to wander whilst in class.

Attention Deficit (in those days called inattention) was frowned upon and attracted punishment, usually in the form of extra work or detention. Nobody was hyperactive.

Nobody claimed to have a mental disorder as a convenient excuse for laziness or bad behaviour, which was not tolerated. Casual disruption was nipped in the bud.

Even more recently, five close family members who were visiting, sat with us to watch the FA Cup Final and failed to react when the Wigan goalkeeper brought off a stunning save. I turned round to see that, despite being football fans in varying degree, all five were occupied with their techno-gadgets, three on i-phones, one on a tablet and one using a laptop. Grumpy and his wife were alone in paying attention to the match at that moment.

May I suggest that the massive rise in so-called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is directly linked to the concurrent rise in distraction overload presented by modern technology. The medical profession would have us believe ADHD is a form of affliction, an illness, and is busy prescribing bucketfuls of pills which affect the brain in an effort to bring about a ‘cure’.

The innocent freedom I enjoyed as a child with the ability to explore and wander safely, to pursue varied indoor and outdoor hobbies and interests and to exercise much responsible independence, has gone. We are in a strange new world now. Giving small children electronic gadgets to occupy them in the same way as giving a baby a dummy to suck, to keep them quiet, is a betrayal of childhood, as once

addicted they cannot be weaned from them. They do not learn to think, but to respond: also the attention of parents is increasingly concentrated on their own gadgets as they, in turn, are perpetually distracted.

Trouble lies ahead I fear.

Nowadays, the only time I notice numbers of children in public is when they are going to school or returning home. Then they vanish indoors to their cyber world and the television.

In a few short years our way of life has been totally and unnaturally transformed, wholeheartedly embraced without a care for the consequences, and the first generation is growing up without a firm grip on reality.

The genie is out of the bottle.

Whilst the Nursery children have been watching the development of Painted Lady caterpillars turning into pupae and then into beautiful butterflies, the Reception class have been digging for worms in the muddy area to put into their wormery.

Other popular activities have included an outing to the Junior Farm at Wroxham Barns, where they fed the hungry lambs and held the soft and cuddly guinea pigs.

A fun morning was spent at Waitrose where they were able to taste unusual fruits, scan shopping through on the till and sit in the Manager’s chair whilst watching customers on the CCTV!

CROMER CRAB, LIME AND GINGER FISHCAKE

Fresh coriander, crème fraiche, sweet Thai chilli sauce from head chef at The Grove - Gary Parrett

Cromer and superb, succulent, tasty crab has gone together for centuries. They taste great simply dressed and enjoyed with a lovely green salad, but we wanted to do something slightly more adventurous with this fantastic seafood.

John and Ann Graveling, who ran the Grove for over thirty years, are still the bosses in the garden, and Ann planted me a small herb garden last year which complements the wild mint, lemongrass, bay, garlic, parsley and rosemary that are dotted around the grounds.

It’s a bit of an initiation for any new Chefs de Partie to send them out for fresh rosemary and watch them, ever-more frantically, searching the gardens until the sun begins to set over the distant church tower. One young lad set out to forage for some wild garlic at the beginning of April and still hasn’t come back in.

This recipe takes advantage of some lovely fresh coriander and ginger; tangy limes from Cromer Farm and Health shop, and of course, freshly caught Cromer crab – the King of seafood.

Ingredients Meat from two fresh Cromer crabs 1 cooked and mashed baking potato 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh ginger 1 tablespoon chopped coriander 2 chopped spring onions Salt and pepper to taste

For breading 2 beaten eggs ½ litre milk Panko breadcrumbs 100g plain flour

Method ■ Cook and mash potato and let cool ■

Mix crabs, ginger, coriander and onions. and a squeeze of fresh lime Add the potato and mix together; mould into cakes

Beat together the eggs and the milk Coat the crab cakes in flour then dip in the milk.

Coat heavily in breadcrumbs.

Deep fry in 180c oil for four to five minutes until golden brown Serve with a fresh garden salad, Thai sweet chilli sauce and crème fraîche

How to Get Rid of Your Double Chin, Jowls or the Dreaded Turkey Neck

A youthful face is triangular with prominent cheeks and a slender lower face. With age we lose cheek volume and gain volume in the lower face which results in an inverted triangle like appearance. A young person with a double chin appears older than someone older who has fuller cheeks and slender lower face.

In simple terms-cheeks become jowls!

This change in appearance is due to a combination of factors such as age related redistribution of volume in skin, fat, muscles and even bone. Gravity plays a part and tissues start to sag. In addition to these- genetics, sun damage, smoking, hormones and poor lifestyle choices also contribute to this.

Here are some prevention strategies and treatment options for you...

Don’t be stingy about using the cream on your neck. You may pay a little more now, but it will be cheaper than a face-lift in the long run. Treat your neck to the occasional exfoliation but remember to be gentle. Wear an SPF25 or over on your neck every day and if you have short hair, apply it to the back of your neck and the sides too. A wide-brimmed hat will also protect your neck in the sun too.

Gently massage your neck with an upward stroke. This will stimulate the skin, be careful not to pull or stretch the skin though. Putting

on weight can result in an unsightly double chin. Try and eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water.

Treatment options.

Whilst non-surgical treatments help in early stages, well established changes require surgery. Sometimes a full face and neck lift, but we do have less invasive options mentioned below.

Face lift surgery has undergone a total transformation in recent years. Most of the innovations have come from the USA which is where Dr Gheyi had his advanced training. We offer face and neck lifts and minimal invasive surgical options purely under local anaesthesia.

Usually there is no bruising at all, minimal discomfort and a very quick recovery.

NON-SURGICAL • Replace lost volume in the upper face with volumising fillers or fat injections.

• Reduce fat in double chin and jowl area with mesotherapy and radio frequency.

• Mesotherapy helps to reduce fat and improve circulation and skin texture.

If you are not ready for a face lift or wish to postpone it then suspension lifts may be a good option. This can be combined with skin excisions or 'one-stitch' facelift. The best approach can be discussed at your consultation.

This is determined by various factors including recovery time, cost, your desires and expectations etc.

• Chin enhancement and jaw line definition with dermal fillers such as restylane, radiesse or fat injections

• Nefertiti lift with botulinum toxin injections to tighten jaw line and reduce neck bands.

• Tighten loose skin on face or neck with non-ablative lasers, CO2 laser resurfacing, or radio-frequency. Results are visible from the very first session of treatment.

The Local Charity partner scheme is now in its fifth year, and colleagues are set to kick off fundraising with Millfield Pre-School by holding a Second Hand Bookstall and a Tombola on Saturday 13 July at Sainsbury’s North Walsham.

SPARKLING LIVE MUSIC LINE-UP FOR RAILWAY BEER FESTIVAL The annual North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival at the Poppy Line’s Sheringham station is almost as much appreciated for its range of live entertainment as for its range of real ales.

Live music and the backdrop of the sounds and smells of the steam age create the special atmosphere that makes the Festival one of the most popular in East Anglia.

This year’s Festival runs from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July, open (while stocks last) from 11am to 11pm on the first two days, and from 11am to 4.30pm on the Sunday. And the live music line-up promises great entertainment!

Normal fares apply (£11 adult and £10 senior citizen): the Rover tickets give unlimited travel all day, plus free admission to the fascinating William Marriott Museum at Holt station.

So far this year has panned out as predicted and it is unlikely that the next six month predictions will need much alteration with indications that the period extending out to early January will not be dominated by cold weather in the winter period.

The rest of the summer, which should have finally started at the beginning of July ,will more than make up for the dismal start to summer 2013 . Because the sea temperature is some four to five degrees below normal we are more than normal susceptible to cold sea breezes and low cloud right on the coast. The sea temperature has been edging down for some time, winter and summer.

After the demise of global warming we now have climate change and recent 'stabs' at what might happen suggest that we can expect cold unsettled winters and cool wet summers so we have come full circle back to our maritime climate.

Expect anything at any time of the year - drought, storms, floods, heatwaves. Nothing changes.

Carrie and Jonny Burridge bought them along for children and customers to see and have a chat about the cows and their heritage.

Jelly was born on 21 December 2007. Born at Weststow, her unusual markings make her stand out from the herd, as well as her loving but stubborn personality. She enjoys having her own way and will quite happily push the much bigger cows out of her way to get to the tastiest bits in the feed mangers.Jelly had her first calf when she was 2 years old, a heifer which had the standard jersey colours. This little calf was born on Christmas Day 2011 and was called Jellytot. Jelly's second calf was born on 9 January 2013. This little calf was named Jellybaby and came along to Waitrose last month.

Jelly produces on average 25 litres of milk a day, with a diet made up from foods grown on her farm and with grazing outside.

A Love of Dogs

Gemma Joyce owns and is the Fairy Doglover. She loves dogs, having started work at 15 working in a boarding kennel.

Having worked full time in kennel and rescue environments for seven years, Gemma decided to study canine behaviour and passed a course last October with Coape and followed that with an advanced OCN award.

Gemm has run her own business for the last two years specialising in Dog walking, pet sitting for all animals big and small, and canine behavioural home visits.

Jelly is best friends with Jasmine. Jasmine also visited the branch and has become a firm favourite with the children. Her personality is more tolerant than Jelly and she enjoys a lot of fuss and cuddles from the children. Jelly on the other hand, loves the attention - but on her terms!

Firstly, an update on the two cats mentioned last time.

Millie, has now been re-homed with her fosterer who had grown very fond of her. Having recently lost her elderly dog she thought Millie was a suitable candidate to fill the gap in her household. Roger has also left for a new home, with a veterinary nurse who met him while his balance problem was being investigated. The ideal home for Roger as she is aware of his medical history and will be able to identify any changes to his condition. Lovely boy, lucky lad.

When Stephanie returned from holiday recently I had to confess that cat numbers had increased in our household but not with one from Cats Protection. For the past 10+ years we have had a â&#x20AC;&#x153;feralâ&#x20AC;? cat visiting our garden, an unneutered black

tom cat, who would not go anywhere near a cat trap. Last year we finally managed to catch him in a special cat box. This was made easier because his claws had started to dig into his pads and he could not move so quickly.

He was neutered, had some teeth removed, claws clipped and antibiotics and returned to the garden after a night in the garage. Having survived the harsh winter out in the cold (although there are cat kennels available for shelter) we again noticed his claws were getting too long and another visit to the vets was arranged. A further dental was recommended and as he had finally begun to accept contact from us we were able to get him in a normal carrier for a further visit to the vets. This poor little lad had two abscesses in his mouth and a further 9 teeth removed. On his return from the vets we put him in the conservatory to recover and he has hardly left there since. After all these years he has finally learnt to trust people again, and is now a real lap cat that just loves a cuddle. It is obvious that at some point he did have a home and he probably got lost while looking for unneutered queens. Hector is now a permanent addition to our household, I just wish he could have made it indoors earlier.

The Gorilla’s in the city, the Alpacas on the farm... now we need volunteers and stall holders Thornage Hall is used to working with unusual animals on its 70 acre farm. The ABC of animals includes alpacas, bees and chickens, but more recently they waved good bye to Gus the Gorilla who is now located on Novi Sad bridge in Norwich.

Gus the Gorilla was decorated by service users at Thornage Hall’s day services for adults with learning disabilities and will stay in Norwich as part of the Go Go Gorilla trail over the summer. The resident alpacas however, will stay on the farm and will be on show for visitors to see at their annual September Garden fete.

Preparations for the garden fete are now well underway and Thornage Hall is looking for volunteers to help, as well as calling for local businesses who may be interested in having a stall at the event. Over 700 people are expected to attend the Fete where they will be able to see the Thornage alpacas Venus, Mavis, Vera and Pepe, take a guided walk around the farm, wander around a range of stalls from local businesses, as well as Thornage Hall’s own bio dynamic garden produce and

handmade art and craft products on sale. Entertainment for the day will be provided by local bands including East Coast and Trix and Stix, and there will be refreshments and a Barbeque selling Thornage’s own organic Beef Burgers.

Toastmaster of the Year Award

Stuart Richards was voted Toastmaster of the Year by members of North Norfolk Speakers Club and was presented with the award at the club meeting on Wednesday 26 June.

Stuart joined North Norfolk Speakers Club in late 2011, with the intention of addressing his fear of public speaking and to boost confidence.

On 27 June we welcomed Joanne Poulter from Peterborough, one of the newly qualified Area Demonstrators, and she demonstrated "Lost in Wonderland" in six gorgeous floral designs which were won in the raffle. Everyone enjoyed her visit so much that I have already ear-marked her to return next year with a different demonstration - so watch this space. It was also lovely to see so many new ladies at the meeting - welcome to the club.

Don't forget, we have a coach trip to Holkham Hall on 8 August and need to fill up the coach!

We will be leaving New Road Car Park at 10am, and leaving Holkham at 4pm. It is only about an hour's drive, and you can enjoy walled gardens, the hall, three separate cafes, a bygones museum, and a fabulous shop. There is also currently an exhibition of Glamour and Gowns - so lots to fill a five hour visit. Helping Enterprise North Norfolk District Council (NNDC)

Leader Tom FitzPatrick made a presentation to members of the Enterprise North Norfolk entrepreneur training programme on June 25th at a special event hosted by The Victorian Tea Rooms, Cromer, on Tuesday 25 June.

This marked their success in setting up new businesses, ranging from historic tapestry restoration and conservation to insurance broking.

The course leader - Kate Wilde from Engage with Business - was delighted with the success of her first 12 'graduates' of the course.

Modules include business basics, mentoring and master classes in subjects such as market research and social media and are designed to help people start their own business with their eyes open.

The successful new businessmen and women were presented with a copy of ‘The Essential Business Guide’, essential reading for all

entrepreneurs and full of vital information for further success in their chosen fields of business.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Business Enterprise and Economic Development, Russell Wright, said, "The project is really starting to make a difference. Work we did when I was a member of the County Council showed that it is crucial that new entrepreneurs are given help to create credible business plans, so important if they are to be able to obtain business loans. And it’s vital that they have appropriate support and advice available during the first year of business operation, to ensure their survival and success. We will continue to build on this project to find more ways of reaching out and assisting North Norfolk’s businessmen and women of the future.”

PARALLEL TIMES TO PLAY BELFRY ARTS CENTRE FUNDRAISER GIG

Northrepps is set to rock to classic Blondie songs next month when Parallel Times, a Norfolk tribute band, headlines a fundraiser gig on Friday 19 July between 7.30pm and 11pm at Northrepps Village Hall, with proceeds going to The Belfry Arts Centre in Overstrand.

The band, fronted by well-known vocalist Julie Bunn, will play its repertoire of Blondie hits, including Atomic, Heart of Glass and Hanging on the Telephone. With a set-list packed with Blondie classics, an acoustic trio – West Runton's Scubayak – as support and a live music running time of two and a half hours, the evening promises to be a great experience. During the evening there will also be a licensed bar and a raffle.

Parallel Times' keyboard player, Martin Storer, said “I'm connected with The Belfry Arts Centre as a management committee member, as well as playing keyboards in Parallel Times.

I really wanted to do something for the centre as funds are vitally important to keep high quality exhibitions and events running there. The members of the band were really happy to arrange this gig. It's a small venue with a maximum capacity of 200 so we're all looking forward to a sell-out event on 19 July and to entertaining North Norfolk's Blondie fans!”

After searching for some time for a suitable book on building a radio controlled yacht, Ian Harvey finally found just the one on the shelves of North Walsham Library.

It took Ian 4-5 months to complete, was much bigger and cost rather more than he was anticipating, but the results speak for themselves.

Recent Changes to the Planning System

This two part article looks at some of the many changes that have been introduced over recent weeks and months by the Government. The second article will consider the increased flexibility that now exists for householders to extend their properties, and for changes to take place easily in the high street and elsewhere.

This first article looks at a more wide ranging tax regime that is now being rolled out across the Country, which has potential impact on all development of any significance.

Traditionally, significant schemes have undergone a public planning process involving a planning application, debate and decision.

Parallel to that process, there has quite often been the creation of a “planning agreement” whereby developers, land owners and others make various financial and other commitments as a precondition to getting planning permission.

Typically a housing development may make a contribution towards the costs of education in the vicinity, and the site may be partly allocated for “affordable housing” available to those who are unable to buy their own home.

Whilst the “affordable housing” aspects, and some of the detailed direct impacts of the development may still be covered by a “planning agreement” under the new system, the new tax is designed to introduce a uniform approach, that can easily be calculated, with the revenue being used to fund broader infrastructure requirements across any planning area.

This is known as the ‘community infrastructure levy’.

Only a hand full of local authorities has gone through the process leading to adopting

a formal charging system, but many others are in the process now.

Whilst small scale developments will be excluded, any significant development will be charged at rates to be set calculated per square metre constructed or extended.

With a charge of £100 per square metre common place, it is obvious the impact this can have on the costs of development. These costs will either be passed on to ultimate property purchasers or occupiers, or reflected in reduced land prices.

Over the next 12 months many authorities will have adopted this tax, partly as a means to offset lack of central funding for schools, roads etc. The unknown factor is how much this tax will ‘choke off’ development that would otherwise have come forward.

The theory is that the tax should be set at a level that will allow economic activity and the resultant tax revenue to fund new infrastructure, but not at a level that would stifle economic activity.

Understandably, perhaps, there is a rush to secure planning permissions under the current regime, which many believe is cheaper for developers than the planned levy.

This sort of tax has been tried several times over recent decades but in every case has failed to take hold and has been abandoned. However this current regime does seem to have political weight behind it. The financial pressure is on local authorities to adopt this tax as perhaps the only practical way of securing infrastructure improvements that will no longer be funded centrally.

The creation of this new system from scratch is also a significant burden on local authorities.

They must be able to calculate and judge overall needs for infrastructure going forward, often without knowing precisely where and

to what extent other funding sources will continue. They must acquire and use sophisticated financial skills to work out an appropriate level of charge that will meet the balance of simulating infrastructure without killing off development. Then the proposed charges schedules need to run through public examination and processes before they can be adopted.

At the time of preparing this article North Norfolk District Council are at the early stages of implementation, but it is expected that significant progress will need to be made before Spring next year.

H.J. Jackson – hugely popular Norfolk print artist - celebrates 60 years of printmaking in his only solo gallery exhibition this year Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-sea Saturday 20th July - Sunday 4th August

To mark his 60th anniversary, H.J. Jackson will be exhibiting a selection of his recent linocuts, including his much loved images of Norfolk boats, at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea. This will be John’s only solo gallery exhibition this year.

When H.J. Jackson produced his first hand-printed linocut in his last year at school, he had no way of knowing that 60 years later he would still be printmaking.

The exhibition, which will also include new work by other Gallery Plus print artists, opens with an all-day preview on Saturday 20th July and continues daily until Sunday 4th August.

Mon-Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 11am-4pm.

This small single-colour print of a galleon in full sail was instrumental in helping H.J. Jackson – John to his friends – to obtain a place at the Norwich School of Art the following year. It was also directly responsible for him pursuing linocutting as a craft as part of the National Diploma in Graphic Design.

John will be demonstrating his techniques during the preview day and will be available to chat to about his work and history in the industry.

It was while at the School of Art that John became interested in coastal themes, stimulated by visits to Sheringham, Cromer and to the fishwharf at Great Yarmouth during the annual visits by the Scottish Fishing Fleet.

Now a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and a Member of the Society of Wood Engravers, H.J. Jackson has perfected his craft, burnishing each of his full-colour linocuts with the use of his tobacco tin. The printing is carried out entirely by hand.

On leaving Art School, John lost the use of the print-room equipment and although he could purchase tools, lino and ink, he realised he would have to dispense with the services of a printing press. After experimenting, he finally settled on a ‘tobacco tin’ as the ideal burnishing tool – a method he still employs today.

The declining fishing industry features strongly in John’s work, and he likes his boats to look as if they have been to sea.

The multiple layers of ink result in a ‘treacly’ appearance which helps to gives them the look of working vessels.

After working for over 30 years in marketing and publicity, printmaking during evenings and weekends, John was able to pursue linocutting ‘full time’ in 1995.

‘A rare insight into a world that most of us are unlikely to see’ said Roger Warr when he thanked Ray Warnes for his presentation on his visit to Tibet to North Walsham Probus Club last month.

Probably many of us cherish childhood ambitions but few of us actually realise their dreams. Ray’s imagination was kindled as a small boy during the Second World War by an elderly relative who had served in the Royal Norfolk’s at the beginning of the twentieth century. During his service he had been part of a military expedition to Tibet headed by two senior officers - Younghusband and MacDonald.

Together with a friend they joined four others in 2003 and visited Tibet, landing at Kathmandu, trekking with the aid of a local guide known as a sirdar, arranged by a UK company. They went along the Singali ridge at edge of the Himalayas passing into Sikkim which, although it boasts of its own absolute monarchy, is subject to India. India occupies the kingdom ostensibly to protect their borders from China. From Sikkim the party entered Bhutan, visiting the Choelang monastery, which has considerable beauty and wealth notwithstanding the poverty of most of the people.

Ray’s narrative was accompanied by a series of slides, showing the ‘Friendship Bridge’ between India and China. They subsequently entered Tibet during their trip which lasted about four to five weeks their final destination being the capital, Lhasa. Here they met the ‘pension lama’, who is effectively the Dalai’s deputy. Part of his remit is the promotion of the country’s tourism while also seeking aid and publicity from the developed countries.

Naturally there exists a considerable culture difference between the West and that part of Asia. The rising population is likely to become unsustainable. Perhaps the Chinese, who are the overall rulers, may introduce similar restrictions to those which apply to China.

The religion, which is predominantly Buddhist, believes in reincarnation.

Therefore one does not ill treat an animal since it may be a former relative. While this may seem absurd to many of us Tibetans will, quite literally, not ‘hurt a fly’. Therefore the ultimate hope is not resurrection, but life in Heaven.

Tibet was invaded by China in 1950 and its frontiers are strictly guarded.

Since the people are largely illiterate, communication is often by pictorial means for example paintings and photos. Another means was the use of pennants visible from a considerable distance. One of the shots showed the kind of dwelling inhabited by a family of five - an earth floor with walls consisting of a woven material, offering little weather protection.

Sanitation was primitive or nonexistent. The European group preferred to sleep in tents rather than a local building for fear of infection.

National Blood Week smashes targets!

A big thank you has been issued to donors and supporters after National Blood Week 2013 easily exceeded its targets.

The themed week, which ran from 10 June, aimed to educate the public about blood donation and register 10,000 new blood donors nationally.

And thanks to an overwhelming response from the public, NHS Blood and Transplant managed to smash that target and sign up almost 11,400 people.

NHS Blood and Transplant spokesperson Derek Carr said “We are delighted that National Blood Week had such a strong response and we are very grateful for all the support we had from our donors and the public which made it possible.

“It’s great that we were able to beat our national target and we hope that the people who registered in this area will now go on to be regular donors, which will help us maintain a steady supply of blood, as it has a short shelf life. However, the task does not finish here. We constantly need new donors – and in particular younger donors - to replace the 200,000 people nationally who have to retire from donating each year due to factors like poor health and certain medication, so I would urge people to keep coming forwards.

“Giving blood is easy, doesn’t take long to do and can help up to three people.”

During National Blood Week, which ran from 1016 June, NHS Blood and Transplant aimed to increase understanding of the uses of blood and the donation process to encourage those who have never given blood before, or who have not given for some time, to ‘Know Blood, Give Blood’ and help save lives.

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. More ambulance cover in north Norfolk cautiously welcomed

North Norfolk Labour Party's Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed news of more ambulance cover in north Norfolk - 12 months after their petition against cuts started.

Over the last year the party have appealed to the East of England Ambulance Service board not to cut ambulance resource in Cromer and North Walsham, at a time when response times were already poor.

Over 10,000 people have signed their petition and the Trust undertook a series of u-turns which saw an increase in ambulance hours as performance worsened.

Now, staff at our local ambulance bases have won a battle against a reduction in services, as part of a formal grievance written in October 2011, meaning the NHS trust will now increase the number of doublestaffed ambulance hours from 504 a week to 614 hours.

Carrow Road meets Millfield Primary!

Mr Walder, year 5 teacher from Millfield Primary School in North Walsham, took a team of 12 pupils, made up of six boys and six girls, to represent the school in the Under 9s Foundation football tournament.

There they met other teams from across Norfolk who competed with the same enthusiasm as themselves. The first match saw Millfield draw 1-1 with a fantastic goal by Ryan Brown, who helped steady their nerves. Match three saw Millfield come into their own with Rio Dobbie scoring a hat trick followed by a goal from Ellie Suttle. Then to finish off their win Ryan Brown slammed another goal home.

The move has been cautiously welcomed by the local Labour Party who met with the board last year to explain the fears of local residents and echoed staff concerns.

Denise Burke, spokesperson for the campaign, said "This is good news for the thousands of people who have signed the Act on Ambulances petition against cuts to double-staffed ambulances in north Norfolk.

We applaud the unions and staff who have spent months fighting their formal grievance, and pushing for action. We hope that the Trust will stick to their word and ensure this measures take shape as soon as possible. If they do it will be good news for patients here."

Millfield’s goalkeeping was impeccable that day with their goalkeeper Liam King, who unable to handle the ball outside the area headed the ball down field. He then dribbled it past three players and scored an outstanding goal being deemed ‘goal of the day’ by the organisers. Kai Brown then sealed the fate of the opposition with a tremendous goal.
