Local artist’s work endorsed by rock legend A North Walsham based rock music artist was delighted when one of his drawings was endorsed by Mike Rutherford of the band ‘Genesis’.

Barry Holden, decided to copy some artwork from the album cover of “Trick of the Tail” by Genesis and was able to show his work to Mr Rutherford at a recent meeting in Norfolk.

The drawing of a poacher was produced in Barry’s normal medium of coloured pencil on a black card background.

Mr Rutherford was impressed with the work and agreed to sign it as an endorsement, and although Barry was tempted to keep it, it will be sold at the North Walsham Live Aid memorabilia auction on Saturday 6 April during the Charity Rock Night in aid of the 2013 designated local charity “Nelson’s Journey” which helps children through bereavement.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh Lifeboat Crew looked back at 2012 with the awards and dinner dance held at Sutton Staithe Hotel on 23 February.

Friendly Forester II went out of service on 23 October and was replaced by a newer Atlantic 75, B 742 “Douglas Paley”, which had been based at Appledore in Devon since 1997. It was a gift from Mrs Evelyn Anne Paley in memory of her late husband Air Commodore Douglas Paley. It has just had a major refit at the RNLI workshops at Cowes, Isle of Wright.

One hundred people attended the dinner dance.

After the meal the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2012 which was a busy year for Happisburgh Lifeboat Station.

The year started with a donation of £10,000 for station training from Mrs Fox, in memory of her husband. This money was put to good use - 18 of the stations members (13 crew and 5 shore crew) undertook a RNLI First Aid Course, on station, which all passed.

Other training was done at the RNLI College in Poole, two people went on a Crew course, one went on a Helm course, two on Tractor Driver course, and two on a Radio course. This is on top of all the Training done on station, on Tuesday evening and Sundays mornings.

The Achievement award, is decided on by all the station and this year went to Bob Mann the station mechanic and tractor driver, for the high standard which he keeps the boats in, and nothing is ever too much trouble.

Seven people on station received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal Cedric Cox, Cubitt Siely, Tim Grimmer, Tony Phenix, Matt Bales, Justin Arnold and Philip Smith.

In 2012 Spirit of Berkhamsted was launched 12 times, Friendly Forester II 8 times and on six occasions they were both launched on the same job.

Callouts were to missing persons, broken down boats, people in water, inflatables blown out to sea, persons trapped on reefs. Two of these callouts were recorded as life saved - the first was on the 20 June when Friendly Forester II was called to a male with chest pain on a boat 4.5 miles north of the Station and the second happened on 5 July when the senior helmsman, Tim Grimmer, took the opportunity to map the old sea defences.

With a very low tide making the job much easier Tim took the station’s D-Class Spirit of Berkhamsted, with a crew of Tony Phenix, Christian Larter and Charlotte Siely.

After mapping the sea defences they went to check the reefs off Sea Palling to make sure no rocks had moved. While checking the reefs at 1745hrs, a small boat was seen against a reef. The crew went to investigate and found a man trapped by ropes in the water beside the boat. The crew entered the water and cut the man free and recovered him into the lifeboat and gave him first aid for shock and query hypothermia. As this was happening the lifeboat contacted the Coastguard to arrange an ambulance to meet them at Sea Palling ramp. Then the lifeboat took the man to the beach, where they were joined by the RNLI Lifeguards, based at Sea Palling, who used their vehicle to transport the man up the beach to the awaiting ambulance to be transported to hospital.

The lifeboat returned to Station and was ready for service at 1900hrs.

The Chairman presented Cubitt Siely with his RNLI’s 30 year Long Service badge.

This year we are have a new award “the service award” which is a small replica of the memorial at Poole to Lifeboat men who have lost their lives, It will only be

awarded when memorable Service have taken place in the past year.

Had it not been for Happisburgh’s training session on that evening the outcome may have been much more serious and this highlights the dangers of going to sea alone.

For this service the station management decided to award the Crew with the “Service Award”, not forgetting the Shore Crew Bob Mann and Sean Ferguson and duty DLA Robert Ferguson.

Despite the weather, fundraising went well with Lifeboat day raising over £5,000. The Dinner Dance itself raised £545 from raffle tickets and donations.

The Crew and their guests then enjoyed the rest of the night with an excellent band and dancing.

NORTH NORFOLK COMMUNITY TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION NWACTA Changes its Name

It was in 1999 that the community transport operation based in North Walsham to serve sections of North East Norfolk was created, and its full title was North Walsham Area Community Transport Association (NWACTA) In the course of the last dozen years our operations have extended into a much wider area. It was in 2004 that our sister organization, based in Holt, had to cease operations and NWACTA took on the provision of their services. In subsequent years, we have also taken over the community transport provided by other organizations that were unable to continue. We are currently exploring how to further extend the area we serve, particularly in a westerly direction. It means that for some time we could more accurately have been described as the North Norfolk Community Transport Association, which is the title that the Trustees have now adopted.

One reason for informing you about the change of name now is that Waitrose have very kindly agreed that in April we will be one of the three charities that it will support. (Waitrose is a popular destination for some of our passengers.) We would be delighted and grateful if your readers would put their green discs in the container labelled North Norfolk Community Transport Association.

We are in the process of improving our fleet.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Stephanie has had several phone calls recently from people asking for advice because their cats have been toileting in inappropriate places.

Discussing the problem with them she found that in each instance there was no litter tray in the house for the cats’ ablutions. It is important to have a tray, especially with young cats, and at this time of the year as it is difficult for them to “go” outside. Some people are concerned that the litter tray will be smelly but this does not happen if it is cleaned regularly. It also provides an opportunity to identify possible health issues.

When we re-home cats and kittens one of the most important questions we ask of new owners is that they keep their cats in at night and provide them with a litter tray. Keeping cats in at night (especially the very young ones) is as important as providing a litter tray and we recommend this for all cats whether re-homed by us or from another source. A recent instance of this was a cat which came into care because she was “weeing” everywhere who, after just one day, started to use the litter tray and has now been re-homed with no behavioural problems.

Most people are now aware that we microchip all our cats and kittens and the new owner’s details are recorded on-line as soon as possible after they have been re-homed. On occasion we take into care cats that have been micro chipped before joining us and in some instances the owner’s details have never been registered. We have also had instances where the cat has changed hands before joining us and the change of ownership has not been recorded or the owner has moved and not advised the micro chip company of the change. If these cats had gone missing there would have been no way of tracing the owners. If your cat is micro chipped please do make sure that its registration details are up to date.

Britian’s third most popular pet is finally finding its feet in the Veterinary consulting room. For our April promotion at Miramar vets we are offering FREE rabbit clinics with our qualified nurses to promote the health and general well-being of these complex creatures.

The rabbit’s digestive system is complicated, if not fed the correct diet, rabbits can suffer with serious digestive problems and dental issues for life.

Unlimited hay or grass should always be available, with a mixture of fresh leafy green vegetables (the darker the green the better) and a complete pellet type food. Avoid the colourful cereal mix as this promotes selective feeding, resulting in an unbalanced diet. Fresh water from a bowl or bottle should also always be available. Any dietary changes should be made gradually, over several weeks, starting with small amounts of the new food gradually increasing in amounts while decreasing the old food.

Rabbit Awareness Week Avoid grass cuttings from lawn mowers as they can lead to severe digestive disturbances.

Fruit tree branches make excellent chewing sticks and keep rabbits amused for hours. They May 4th-12th need stimulation, so toys in the form of flower pots and paper towels that they can shred themselves must be available for your rabbit to be content.

Cages need to be a MINIMUM of 60x24x24 inches per average rabbit, with a separate sleeping area and living quarters and daily access to a run for exercise. Rabbits should be placed in the hutch at night and covered in the winter months with waterproof covering, where possible take hutches into sheds or garages in wintery weather. In door rabbits still require daily out-door exercise with access to grass to eat and the sunshine for vitamin D production.

Clean your rabbit out daily where they toilet, they usually go in one area of the hutch or run, with a thorough weekly clean of all straw and newspaper. Check your rabbit twice a day for signs of flystrike in the summer months. Rabbits may suffer with heatstroke in temperatures above 27˚ shade must be provided in the summer.

Rabbits need yearly vaccinations to protect against Myxomatosis and RHD (Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease) both of which are often fatal. Worming is also an important part of rabbit care, required 2-4 times a year to prevent parasite s such as E. Cuniculi.

This year’s event takes place on 21 April and as in previous years the event starts at Sheringham Station Car Park and this year finishes at Hoveton Hall near Wroxham. There are two possible routes available both of which are approximately 45 miles long and the finish at Hoveton Hall is in a beautiful park setting with tearooms available serving light refreshment and a special reduced rate for entrants to the stunning floral gardens.

The run normally attracts 200-250 vehicles, not just cars, and is a really great day out. The event is open to any classic or interesting vehicle including motor bikes, vans, jeeps including military etc.

Start time is between 9am - 10.30am approximately.

Entry is by £5 minimum donation to East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The weekly Aylsham Country Market, held every Friday morning in Aylsham Town Hall, is offering youngsters of all ages the chance to learn the ancient and noble art of knitting during the Easter holiday. Market Manager Debra Kidd explains, "As well as offering some fantastic homemade food at the market, our producers also include some very skilled craftspeople. They will be on hand at our market on Friday 12 April to help teach young people how to knit, or if they already have the basics, how to improve their skills. We're calling it Clickety-Knit!"

Debra is asking that children are accompanied by an adult but they in turn can join in the fun or, if they want to relax while the kids clickety-knit, there is a café at the market where you can sit and enjoy a cuppa and cake.

Aylsham Country Market is open from 8.50am to noon and prospective Clickety-knitters can just turn up at any time on 12 April. There's no need to take any wool or needles as these will be provided.

Aylsham Country Market is a co-operative of local producers. As well as a great selection of crafts, it also offers a wide variety of cakes, savouries like cheese biscuits and sausage rolls, desserts including bakewell tarts and lemon meringue pies, plus soups, eggs and even local goats meat.

At out last ‘café church’ meeting we talked about our joy and peace having been ‘stolen’ through many circumstances throughout our lives and how Jesus can restore them.

At our next meeting which will be directly after Easter Sunday when we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, the topic will be ‘Life after Death’. Death is a subject we are not comfortable with, yet it is the only certain thing about our lives. Is death the end or is there more? How can we know what it is like? Because Jesus died and rose again He is the one who has destroyed the power of death.

Easter fun for everyone at Holt Country Park, Bacton Wood, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Countryside Rangers are hosting a range of activities at the council’s countryside sites over the Easter holidays, with events for children and adults on offer at Holt Country Park, and at Bacton and Sadler’s Woods, both near North Walsham, and Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, ranging from Easter egg trails and pond dipping to mini-beast hunts, a Dixi mix jazzland band and even a ‘Muddy Boots Conservation Day’. And there’s no need to book in advance, just turn up on the day.

Bacton Wood Events start from the main car park. Please wait for the rangers or group leaders to guide you. There are no toilets at Bacton Wood.

Sadler’s Wood Sadler’s Wood is in North Walsham, between Chestnut Avenue (off Brick kiln road) and Happisburgh road on the eastern edge of North Walsham. There is no car park serving Sadler’s Wood.

Make the most of longer days

With the days getting longer, NHS Blood and Transplant is asking people to think about blood donation as they start to make more plans.

As Spring starts, winter hibernation can be forgotten - with extended daylight, Bank Holidays and Summer holidays to look forward to.

But when you’re planning how you’re going to enjoy 2013, make sure you fit in giving blood. Or if you’ve never done it before, why not book in now?

Blood donations are a vital part of treatment for many conditions including cancer and long term illnesses, people involved in accidents and in maternity care. Hospitals across England and North Wales need 7,000 units of blood every day and each unit can save the lives of up to three people.

Derek Carr , Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area, said: “More daylight makes us all feel better and like we have more time and we’re asking people to think about giving blood as they start to make more plans. Being willing to spare some free time, a couple of times a year, means you can help us to save lives. We urge regular donors and those who haven’t been for some time to book appointments now. We also need new donors, especially 17-24-year-olds, and would encourage people to find out more and sign up.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

Calls for action from Vodafone over loss of signal in North Walsham

North Norfolk Labour Party is calling on Vodafone to resolve problems affecting signals across north Norfolk - with reports of long-running issues affecting areas as widespread as Sheringham, Mundesley, Cromer, and North Walsham.

Last year the local Labour Party had written to all phone providers calling for an improvement in communications infrastructure, and to ensure that there is a push to provide 3G signal in towns, and a decent signal for calls elsewhere. Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure Limited (CTIL) representing O2 and Vodafone have since responded encouraging the district council to meet with the company to work together to meet these aims.

However, in the shorter term, there is an urgent need from Vodafone to now resolve on-going problems affecting customers across the district with customers taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Reports of signal problems has stretched from Cromer to Mundesley and Sheringham to North Walsham.

The party is now writing to Vodafone calling for urgent action particularly as many local businesses who rely on mobile phones are losing trade as a result of the on-going issues.

4Stephen Burke, Labour's represenative for North Walsham East, said "We are writing to Vodafone to ask for answers about the poor service customers in north Norfolk are getting. In rural areas, especially at this time of year in bad weather, it is essential that residents know they are getting a reliable phone signal. What started off as an issue for phone users in Sheringham has now become an issue across the district including Cromer, Mundesley, and North Walsham".

Five North Norfolk projects will be finalists in seven categories of the regional Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards for 2013.

Projects from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire are competing to be named the best in East Anglia, in 12 categories covering different types of building design, construction and use. The awards, to be given at a dinner at St Andrews Hall, Norwich, on Friday 26 April 2013, recognise projects that have been built to the highest standards, and demonstrate innovation and sustainability in design.

The five North Norfolk projects, nominated by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), are: • Best Individual House – The Glass House, Holt. Developer/Owner – Derek Foreman, Architect/Agent – Tom Ground

• Best Community Building – Cromer Hospital. Contractor – Mansells, Architect/Agent – Purcells, Client – NHS.

• Best Technical Innovation - Cromer

• Best Technical Innovation – 43a Norwich Road, Cromer. Contractor – MB Construction (Mike Brown), Architect/Agent – SMG Architects.

• Best Education Building – The Atrium, North Walsham. Contractor – Farrans, Architect/Agent Tom Ground and NPS, Client – North Walsham High School/ Norfolk County Council.

• Best Commercial Building – The Atrium, North Walsham. Contractor – Farrans, Architect/Agent Tom Ground and NPS, Client – North Walsham High School/ Norfolk County Council.

• Best Partnership – North Norfolk District Council Building Control and CNC Building Control (both local authorities

worked together to ensure that the Cromer Hospital remained under the auspices of local authority Building Control, not a private competitor).

Regional winners will go forward to the national LABC Building Excellence Awards, to be presented in November.

Don’t forget the Dog this Easter! A New Norfolk Guide

Easter is a time when we traditionally treat ourselves to a chocolate egg or a slice of delicious Simnel Cake. Such treats are intended for us humans to enjoy but do also contain ingredients that are poisonous to our four legged friends.

Chocolate contains Theobromine which is poisonous to dogs and dried fruits are also toxic.

Please always consult your vet if you are concerned that your dog has eaten something poisonous.

So why not treat your dog to a tasty Liver Cake this Easter. Go on, they’ll love you for it!

The ingredients you will need for the cake are: 500 grams of flour, 500 grams of raw liver, 4 eggs and a cup of milk.

In a blender, whizz together the liver, eggs and milk until smooth and resembles a bloody milkshake. Pour into a mixing bowl, add the flour and mix well. You’ll end up with a stodgy, gooey mixture.

Pour into a greased baking tray, cover and bake at 200 degrees for an hour and a half – two hours, until cooked through.

Allow to cool then for the topping combine 100 grams of soft cheese such as Philadelphia with half a teaspoon of honey. Mix well and spread over the cool cake. Decorate with doggie choc drops.

Store in the fridge and use within one week.

Can be frozen (if it’s not all been eaten!)

Success for Vikings at County Championships

North Norfolk Vikings Swimming Club is celebrating success in the British Gas County Championships 2013, held at over four weekends in February and March.

An incredible 89 personal best times were smashed by the young Vikings swimmers, making this year’s County Championships a landmark event for themselves and the club.

Twenty seven club swimmers entered 132 swims and managed to get through to 24 finals in total and achieved 44 top sixes.

Seven swimmers were placed first in their heats, five were placed second and eight were placed third.

Among the Vikings stars were 15-year old Emily Bowyer from Cromer who won her 50, 200 and 400 metres Freestyle, and 50, 100 and 200 metres Backstroke events.

Adam Crafer, 16, from Aylsham, brought home the silverware for the Men’s Open 200 metres breaststroke.

The Vikings’ Head Coach, Chris Searle, said: “The Club is really proud of all 27 who managed to swim County qualification times and take part in this year’s Championships.

We had a number of first timers at the County Championships this year, so we have new blood coming through the ranks to keep the Vikings in contention. We have recently

restructured our squads to reflect difference levels of ability and our intensive training with the Performance Squad is paying off.”

It’s an Oxbridge Hat trick for Paston Sixth Form College students

Three Paston students have this year won places at Oxford and Cambridge for September 2013.The three had to demonstrate outstanding academic ability in their GCSE and AS results and in their predicted A level grades. These, together with their personal statements and College references, got them an interview. Winning a place was down to their own performance in highly competitive interviews. They clearly were successful in convincing interviewers of their academic credentials and potential.

The College supported the three through the Oxbridge programme and they are all part of the A + gifted and talented scheme. This scheme has run for over 10 years in the College. It is for high achieving students with at least 3A* grades at GCSE. A+ students usually take 5 AS subjects including Critical Thinking and are most likely to achieve A*/A grades at A level. The scheme helps students fine tune their academic skills at the highest level, through a programme of coaching and mentoring, visits to highly rated universities and preparation for additional entrance exams.

Plays for Today and for Tomorrow

Paston Sixth Form College Performance Studies students performed two small plays around the theme of ‘Normal for Norfolk’ for the Churches Together on the Broads Welcoming Communities Conference.

This took place at Acle Methodist Church following an invitation to perform from Robin Smith, the Economic Development Manager at the North Norfolk District Council and his Administration Officer, Julie Humphrey. The students had to create a Community Project as part of their performance course and this was a great opportunity to use a genuine professional brief to meet this criteria.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER GARDENING WITH CHILDREN

Hopefully by the time this article is printed Spring will have arrived and we will be busy in the garden and this is the perfect time to introduce children to the joys of gardening. From the time they can walk they will naturally want to be out in the garden with you and want to join in your activities – digging, helping to push the wheelbarrow, watering crops, adding weeds to the compost, and so on. If you can find them small tools the enjoyment is even greater.

Children need a safe space to play but you can also set aside an area, perhaps a raised bed for them to grow vegetables and flowers of their own. Choose chunky seeds such as nasturtiums which will provide plenty of colour (and introduce them to blackfly) or runner beans which will remind them of Jack and the Beanstalk. Make a colourful sign telling everyone who is the gardener of the plot.

You can also use your time together in the garden to teach your garden about wildlife.

Point out how the robin will come down to pick up the worms and insects that are

disturbed. Show how bees and insects pollinate the plants, how frogs and toads eat slugs and snails which might otherwise eat their plants.

You can involve all of the children’s senses: • Smell: Encourage them to smell flowers and herbs. Get them to rub the leaves of herbs and see if they can identify the different smells especially between the different types of mint.

• Fill a large pot with multi purpose potting compost and distribute a dozen dwarf broad bean seeds evenly over the surface.

Show them how to push the beans into the compost to about 4cms depth, then cover them and water well.

• Sight: There is so much for children to see in a garden and what a perfect way to learn all about their colours, buttercup yellow, rose red and cornflower blue.

• Sound: The garden is full of noise, the birds singing, the bees buzzing and the wind in the trees so encourage children to listen carefully to everything around them.

• Touch: Children reach out to feel what they see so encourage them to experience different textures outside. Let them feel the rough texture of a runner bean or the warm, smooth skin of a tomato. Just handling the soil and getting dirty is a great lesson in itself.

Older children can also be tempted away from their computers if they recognise your enthusiasm. Why not get them to grow for the

World Book Day at Millfield Pre School

The children and staff at Millfield Pre chool celebrated World Book Day on 7 March by dressing up as their favourite book character. Amongst the wonderful creations were pirates, Superman, Red Riding Hood, Peppa Pig, the Gruffalo and Tigger from Winnie the Pooh.

World Book Day is a global celebration of books and reading, and is observed in over 100 countries. It is a joint effort by publishers, booksellers and those interested who work together to promote books and encourage reading for the personal enjoyment of children and adults.

Aylsham Country Market Cake Competition

New leaf presents a morning of the Norfolk Police and its history from 1839.

Aylsham Country Market, held every Friday morning in Aylsham Town Hall, is offering its customers the chance to win one of its members' hand made scrumptious cakes.

An illustrated talk with artefacts. Looking at policing from 1839 with particular emphasis on Aylsham and the surrounding areas by Peter Billingham who is a Norfolk Constabulary Police Historian on Wednesday 17 April at 10.30 am. Tickets are £2 which are non refundable and includes refreshments and will be available to purchase three weeks beforehand. As space is limited, tickets are essential.

Securing the future of North Norfolk’s Community Sports Centres

Following the agreement of proposals from the North Walsham Sports Centre Voluntary Management Committee, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is introducing a new pricing structure for the North Walsham Sports Centre. This will be extended from 1 April to cover NNDC’s two other community sports centres, putting them on an improved financial footing and helping to secure their future.

NNDC manages three Community Sports Centres, based at Cromer Academy, North Walsham High School and Stalham High School, each offering a wide range of sporting activities to the whole community every day during school holidays, every weekend, and on evenings during school term-time. There are over 90,000 visits to the council’s sports centres every year, with many of the school holiday activities booked-up well in advance.

Following discussions over the winter, NNDC will continue to manage the North Walsham Community Sports Centre with assistance from the centre’s Voluntary Management Committee, which gives a voice to the main users of the facility. The committee has worked through the prices with Council officers and has come up with what it believes is a sustainable package for the future.

A common charging structure has been agreed for the three centres, coming into force on 1 April, and while this will mean slightly higher costs for all users, the North Norfolk community sports centres will continue to offer excellent value for money, with the charges remaining extremely competitive when compared with other commercial and local authority sports facilities.

At the same time the Council will increase its promotion and marketing of the three centres, especially for the school holiday activities, to further increase participation.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, John Lee, said, “The district’s Community Sports Centres are very popular, providing the opportunity for sporting activity for young and old alike and NNDC has always stressed that it had no intention of closing the North Walsham Sports Centre, despite some comments to the contrary.” .

North Walsham Artist’s Struggle to Draw and Paint Again Culminates in Exhibition at Picturecraft in Holt

Last year in January 2012 part time amateur Norfolk artist Jamie Cooper from North Walsham woke up with a pain in his shoulder and a dead right arm.

Jamie takes up the story; ‘I thought that it would pass if I just left it. However, it continued to get worse. After six weeks I had developed a severe limp as walking seemed to jar my neck and cause extreme pain down my arm and suffer loss of feeling in my right hand.

Being a part-time artist this made it extremely difficult to pursue my hobby, as I am right handed. It had become a noticeable problem at work and my wife insisted that I went to chiropractic here in North Walsham. After four treatments in a two week period the chiropractor refused to see me until I had a MRI scan and he referred me to my doctor.

The weeks went by and the wait seemed endless. We couldn’t afford for me to go private and so I carried on work, where I had recently been promoted. The pain increased all of the time until I could only lift the lightest of things with difficulty and definitely could no longer draw or paint. I had the scan in mid

April. Fitting me in the MRI machine had been an extremely tough job and caused a lot of pain. The next three days I ended up bedridden, not able to move at all. After two weeks off of work I returned but just became worse again and so had to go off sick and remain off work.

I wasn’t able to return until late October and felt totally useless in all of this time. I couldn’t even lift a pencil to draw, and had never been off work in my life for more than a few days.

My scan results came back and it showed that I had two slipped discs in my neck which was causing the nerves serving my right side to be constantly rubbed. One spinal consultant at the NNUH told my wife and I that without an operation I could lose the feeling in my legs too.

Following referral to the NNUH I had to wait for an operation to remove the offending discs, replace them with cages, fuse the vertebrae together and have two plates put in the back of my neck.

There is a huge waiting list for this sort of operation but luckily I was able to take a cancellation in October (otherwise I might have had to wait until April 2013). Dr Rai’s team at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital successfully per-

The Rotary Club of North Walsham has presented books to the value of £500 to local schools. This is part of a Rotary initiative to work with schools to improve literacy - a hugely important skill for youngsters preparing for life in the modern technological world. The books were selected for their potential impact in raising literacy by Executive Head teacher, Claire Fletcher, who spoke to the club earlier in the Rotary Year.

Apart from being able to resume a normal life, I also regained most of the use of my right arm.

Alas, some permanent damage had been done but this improves slightly each week. I don’t feel confident that I will be able to do all that I could before but am now able to draw and paint again and so cherish this ability very highly and am grateful to Dr Rai and his team at the NNUH.

The success of the operation is testament to the skills of Dr Rai and his team and I currently have an exhibition of some of my pen and watercolours at Picturecraft Gallery in Holt.

The exhibition continues until the 10 April’.

Community Matters for Benjamin Foundation

The Benjamin Foundation was presented with a cheque as one of the first recipients of the Waitrose 'Community Matters' scheme in North Walsham.

Customers vote for the charity of their choice with a green token presented at the checkout. The Benjamin Foundation received the sum of £1380 as December's donation was triple the normal amount donated because Waitrose decided to use the money they would have spent on Christmas advertising to boost its community fund.

"The Foundation picked up almost half of the customers votes and I think this demonstrates the strong regard the people of North Walsham have for The Benjamin Foundation" said Kevin Woolstenholmes from Waitrose.

Wayne Miles, the Winston Court manager received the cheque and said "We are going to use this money to redecorate the communal living area at Winston Court as it has just had remedial building work completed and needs a refresh.

The centre provides a safe place to live for vulnerable 16-25 year olds with no home and helps them to get their lives back on track.

Groveland Farm Shop – Watch this space!

Over the next two years Groveland Farm Shop and Restaurant will be undergoing sympathetic refurbishments, without losing its old-world Farm Shop charm. Whilst expensive, refurbishments will enhance the efforts already put in by the staff to continually enhance customer experience. The Restaurant has already benefited from a repaint and a display of lovely photos and artwork by local amateurs (available for sale).

The first major face lift was kicked off this year with a revamping of the “facilities” in the Restaurant. The quality of the food over the past year has been excellent, the waiting staff smart, professional and friendly and the ambiance wonderful, however this was spoilt by dated, tired toilet facilities. Following successful themed evenings, a Sunday Carvery and an à la Carte service on Fridays and Saturdays customers constructive criticisms have been listened to and prioritised.

Customers have been generous with their praise and appreciation of the changes.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

Our Taster Menu is proving to be very popular with our diners and we are delighted with the comments we have received. We are going to continue with the menu for the coming months while we start thinking about our summer menus. Planning new menus is always an interesting and exciting task, with so many local growers and producers in north Norfolk choosing fresh produce is a pleasure. We endeavour to use as many local suppliers as possible as we believe in supporting local businesses and know that we almost certainly will not find better.

With Easter just a week or so away we are expecting a busy time and are looking forward to serving some of the many visitors to Overstrand who return to the village each year for the Easter break. Thursday 7 March was the AGM meeting for the Club held at the Community Centre. About 40 members turned up to vote the Committee back in again for another year. The Chair person gave a wonderful speech and gave credit to the rest of the committee for just how hard they work to keep the Club going.

Events planned for 2013 include our annual Spring dinner at Scarborough Hill Hotel and The Squeegees, who members met for the first time last year. are back by popular demand.

We also have Tony Bryant back again and Mandy Martin who sings with Charlie. Bingo, the annual quiz, cake stall, hand bell ringing, Pat’s Poems Day and The Den Barrie Duo complete the events planned for 2013, not forgetting of course our Christmas Lunch which will be held on 5 December.

On the subject of Christmas, the Club would like to thank The Inner Wheel for their kind donation of £50 –this was omitted from the first report of the New Year. Fund raising on Thursday made a grand total of £70 - £43 from the raffle and £27 from the second hand clothes stall.

The Club opens its doors at North Walsham Community Centre on the first Thursday of the month at 2pm. If you are partially sighted or losing your sight, do try to come along - it's a really good afternoon's enjoyment.

Method Melt the 16oz of chocolate and set aside.

With an electric mixer combine the sugar and butter, add the eggs then add the vanila, salt and flour.

With mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted chocolate and add chocolate chips and pecan nuts.

Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment.

Heat oven to 180c then with an ice cream scoop, or two tablespoons, scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes.

This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.

How can anyone be so negative about so many sections of the NHS as the "grumpy old man".

Let me put the other side of the situation.

Firstly GPs provide primary care. Hospitals provide secondary care where that is needed.

Cromer Hospital is far from a " very posh clinic". It is a modern hospital built for the modern day, as nowadays many treatments do not require an overnight stay but do need secondary care and once this is given patients are far more comfortable in their own homes.

I - and many others - attend there for life prolonging treatment.

On a regular basis many patients attend, as I do, for blood transfusions every 3-4 weeks. This definitely relieves the strain on the Weybourne Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, which is incredibly busy. Patients come from some distance to get their transfusions as this is a treatment which cannot be unduly delayed.

There are numerous other specialities at Cromer Hospital including haematology, ophthalmology, renal, ENT and rheumatology, where consultants visit and many varied treatments and appointments are offered.

The nursing staff are responsible for some very complex treatments and are highly skilled in their roles. All the remaining staff at Cromer Hospital do their utmost to care for their patients and help in any way they can.

Finally, not all GP surgeries send their patients to Cromer Hospital for blood tests. Many employ phlebotomists/nurses who take blood samples at their surgery premises and this can avoid unwell patients having to make that journey to Cromer.

I have just read the article from the Grumpy Old Man regarding Cromer and Norwich and Norfolk University Hospitals. There was one important thing he didn’t mention and that is Eye Surgery.

At Cromer Hospital if you have an appointment to see the consultant in the morning you can return to have an operation the same afternoon. The service is excellent and I believe only happens at Cromer.

However I do agree that it would be helpful to patients if car parking was, for example, 50p for 30 minutes as this would encourage people to use the car park.

Celebrating World Book Day at St Nicholas House School

Pupils at St Nicholas House School celebrated World Book Day with a range of literary events throughout the school including a special assembly. For the children in Forms 2 and 3 the day followed the theme of ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

Pupils Grace, Abby, Izzy and Callum from Form 3 wrote about their day: ‘For World Book Day Form 2 joined Form 3 for the day. We all brought in our teddy bears and wore our own clothes. We listened to ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ and made scenes from the story in shoe boxes using lots of different materials. I made a dark, gloomy cave with Frank and Paul. Grace made the thick oozy mud with Sacha and Edward, Callum made the snowstorm with Evelyn and Gracie-May and Abby made the long wavy grass with Lilianne and Eadan. We also had to make the sounds of our boxes. In the afternoon we had a Teddy Bear’s Picnic and ate sandwiches and buns. Mrs. Stevens made the buns and we all made the sandwiches which were yummy. We also did dancing and drama and pretended to be bears. It was a really good day!

Questions asked about the announcement of additional ambulances in Norfolk

North Norfolk Labour Party ‘cautiously’ welcomed a decision from the East of England Ambulance Service Trust to put five additional ambulances on the road in Norfolk – including additional hours in Cromer – but have criticised management for the fact that none were in action on the day they were meant to start operating.

The Labour Party launched the ‘Act on Ambulances’ campaign last year following reports that cuts were taking away double-staffed ambulances at the main bases of Cromer and North Walsham.

Campaigners have argued with MPs and health officials that more ambulances were needed, and that resorting to Rapid Response Vehicles would not improve response times.

Now the East of England Ambulance Service

Quarter-final time in the Handicap Doubles Cup and at North Walsham Sports Centre, NWSCE’s James Morter (M), Stuart Hook (Q) and Joel Lodge (Q) hosted Shark’s Matt Hudson (I), Chris Marshall (H) and Steve Hudson (G). In the best of nine contest, the handicaps gave NWSCE an 11 point start in four contests, a 12 start in another four and a 13 start in the remaining battle. The hosts moved 2-0 up with two wins in the deciding set, before Sharks took their first win with what would be the only win in straight sets of the night. A 21-16 win in the third, followed by a 21-17 deciding set win and then a 21-18 third set victory all went the way of the Sharks as they moved 4-1 ahead. The pattern continued as the next battle was won 21-19 in the third, but this time went the way of the hosts as

- Grade 3 – Approx. 3.5 miles – A country walk on minor roads, field edge and cross field paths. Meet at The Butchers Arms PH, Oak Lane, East Ruston, NR12 9JG – if you would like a meal after the walk then please book with the pub before the day on (01692) 650237 – thanks!

– Grade 2 – approx. 2.5 miles – A walk along the River Ant and its estuaries on farmland, grass, gravel, woodland and field paths with gentle gradients and one small section of steps. Meet at the Ludham How Hill free Car Park, off the A1062 from Wroxham or Potter Heigham (signed).

– Approx. 2 miles – A flat walk on concrete, grass and dirt tracks. Meet at the Pay and Display Car Park (charges apply), Beach Rd, Sea Palling, NR12 0AL or the Charity Car Park on the right of Beach Rd – look for the yellow tabard!

Tues 23 April – 11am - Bengate Walks

– grade 1-2 – approx. 1.2 or 1.8 miles – A choice of two flat walk on the Weavers Way and minor roads with a short steep slope at beginning. Meet at the Bengate Weavers Way CP signed off the A149 North Walsham Rd between North Walsham and the Stalham/Wroxham turn offs.
