Christmas is coming... The shops are full of glitter and tinsel, beautifully packaged gifts, exotic foods and drinks for the feast. But what’s it all for? Why do we get caught up every year in the hustle and bustle of the preparations for Christmas?

Christmas is about LOVE, unconditional Love, generous Love, selfless Love a Love that gives expecting nothing in return. It’s about people, good will, peace on earth and giving.

It’s about community!

The community of North Walsham are preparing for this Christmas by getting involved with Messy Nativity. Knitters have been busy knitting sheep. Many of our knitters have been recruited through Liaison Cafe on Market Street and a knitting group at North Walsham High school.

Twelve knitted sheep will be placed in stores in the town of North Walsham, with trail leaflets that invited families to help

North Waltham’s shepherd to find his sheep so he could go and see baby Jesus and tell the real story of Christmas. At the same time there will be a ‘Nativity Journey’. A knitted Nativity set will be making its way through the North Walsham Infant and Junior schools and Millfield Primary school telling the story of the first Christmas.

Messy Nativity Continued from front cover...

On 15 December the Salvation Army will be performing a Messy Street Nativity along with their traditional carols in the Market place.

All this will be taking place throughout Advent. Advent means a time of preparation, a time when Christians remind themselves of the events that had to take place before Jesus could be born. Advent starts on 2 December and goes through to Christmas Day. Keep an eye out for the Messy Nativity Posters around the town and pick up your leaflets for the Sheep Trail from one of the participating shops and join in the hunt for sheep.

Children in Need at Paston Sixth Form College

Staff and students at Paston Sixth Form College raised £432 in a number of different fund raising activities for Children in Need last month.

On the day, the majority of staff and a large number of students dressed up in stripes, wore black glasses and woolly hats for a Where’s Wally fancy dress day. To further boost the money raised, students washed staff cars which was very well received by all the staff.

Paston Sixth Form College Principal Kevin Grieve said “It was a brilliant day at the College and it was pleasing to see we raised a large amount of money for a very good cause. We had some fantastic Where’s Wally costumes.”

Of course there will be all the traditional Christmas services, such as Christingles, Carols by candle light, Carol services, Christmas Eve services and Christmas Day celebrations happening in the churches of the town. The times and dates will be advertised in the North Walsham Times.

New life for North Walsham town centre?

Following a detailed analysis of retail trends and demand/supply, consultants have advised the North Walsham Leadership of Place steering group that the development of a centrally located supermarket could provide the impetus for town centre regeneration.

The North Walsham Leadership of Place group (a partnership of local authority, and local private enterprise, education and community groups), commissioned consultants S.P.A. to look at retail demand in the town, especially the capacity of sites and existing premises to accommodate future development.

SPA’s report, which was discussed at a meeting of the steering group on 15 October, proposed a number of options concerning the ‘vitality and viability’ of the town centre. The report concludes that there is significant interest in the town from supermarket retailers and that a development of this type could create the step change necessary to attract more shoppers into the town centre which in turn could lead to wider investment from non-food retailers.

SPA advise that the most effective way to exploit this interest for the benefit of the town as a whole would be to identify appropriate sites for a supermarket outlet close to the town centre to encourage linked trips, which would have the distinct benefit of increasing the number of shoppers with easy access to other existing retail outlets. The report concluded that one of the most appropriate sites would be one based on Paston Sixth Form College’s

Lawns campus. This site would have the advantage, the report added, of enabling the college to invest strongly in its other sites in the town centre.

The steering group heard that an informal discussion had been undertaken with the College. But all agreed that while they could see the advantages in the general thrust of the report, any discussions as to how best to proceed are at a very early stage and significant detailed work with a full business case and viability analysis of the proposal needs to be undertaken.

David Robertson, North Walsham Town Mayor, said, “I think this is a very interesting idea and one we should certainly explore.

North Walsham is a wonderful town full of life, but if we can bring even more activity to the town centre, so much the better.”

Mair Stockdale, Chair of North Walsham Chamber of Trade, said, “Anything that can bring more potential customers to the existing excellent retail offer in North Walsham should be encouraged. The Chamber of Trade looks forward to taking part in any future discussions.”

Paul Morse, County Councillor and Chair of Governors of North Walsham High School, said, “I think this is an intriguing idea that could be beneficial for both the town and Paston Sixth Form College.”

Eric Seward, Town and District Councillor and Chair of North Walsham Leadership of Place group, said, “This is an exciting idea. We should certainly explore all options to help bring greater vitality to the town centre.”

Kevin Grieve, Principal of Paston Sixth Form College, said, “We are a very successful college and we want to build on that success.

Our first priority has to be the college and its students. We have always been at the heart of North Walsham and we will be very interested to see if further detailed analysis shows that this proposal could be of benefit to both ourselves and the town as a whole. There are a whole host of questions that need to be answered and issues to be resolved across a number of organisations and such a development is not going to happen overnight.”

North Norfolk District Council Cabinet will be considering the report at its meeting in December. In the meantime the development of an agenda of further investigations and discussions will take place to inform the detailed work on the overall viability of the proposal.

North Norfolk Rotary Club are holding a grand Charity Dinner Dance on the 15th December 2012 at Pinewood Park, Upper Sheringham.

The President welcomed Gail Armstrong our WI Advisor to our AGM and gave her address reminding us of the activities that we had enjoyed over the past year. Barbara Twigg thanked the committee for their hard work over the year and gave thanks to Joan who after three hard working years as President was retiring. We welcome Kim as our newly elected President.

The clever craft ladies are making small cross stitch items for the Christmas fare in December. The tenpin bowlers and darts team continue to meet and all groups would welcome new members.

Congratulations to Jill Matthews who won the rose bowl for the past year’s competitions.

A coffee morning is arranged for 13 December with tasty scones and mince pies on sale so please come and support this event.

Our next meeting is on 12 December and the competition is something to do with Christmas. Members were asked to bring along a glass as we are having a cheese and wine evening. We are also holding a ‘Secret Santas Sack’ so please bring along a small gift in value of no more than £5.

Sunday market to boost Sheringham’s pre-Christmas trade

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is to extend the popular Sheringham Saturday Market to cover Sundays as well, over the four pre-Christmas weekends in December.

The new Sunday Market, which will see stall-holders in business on Sheringham’s Station Approach car park 9.30am – 2.30pm (weather permitting) on Sundays 2,9,16 and 23 December as well as on Saturdays as usual, is being introduced alongside the Council’s initiative of offering three hours free parking in its car parks on the same four Sundays.

This move is seen as a further fillip to local trade, encouraging people to shop in their excellent north Norfolk market towns and boosting business in the build-up to Christmas.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “The council is determined to do all it can to support local business. By not only offering free parking on the four Sundays before Christmas to encourage local people to shop locally, but also supporting a special Sunday Market on the same days, we anticipate that Sheringham will have a really exciting pre-Christmas buzz this year!”

Gary Parrett’s (The Grove) Recipe 2

Loin of Gunton venison with toast pine nut and red onion mash, braised red cabbage and rich cacao sauce This is a fairly challenging dish with plenty of preparation, but it’s well worth the effort.

Gunton venison is probably the best around at the moment, and with summer well and truly behind us it’s the perfect meal for those dark winter evenings.

The Grove maitre d’, Gary Taylor, has discovered a cracking Chilean red, the Emiliana Pinot Noir Reservea - full bodied, hearty, smooth and intelligent, a real autumnal wine - which compliments the Gunton venison perfectly.

200g of Gunton Venison loin from Icarus Hines in Cromer. I get Icarus to take the skin off and leave a little fat left on (trimmed) For the mash, 10g toasted pine nuts, Half a red onion (sliced) Two potatoes salt - pinch, pepper - pinch 80ml double cream 25g salted butter

Method:

1. Boil some water and add your peeled diced potatoes.

2. While they are cooking toast the pine nuts and caramelize the red onions in a little butter and sugar. Mix the nuts and the onion together and turn your attention to the mashed potato.

3. Once the potatoes are soft (don’t over-boil) drain them in a colander for at least ten minutes – you’ll want to get all moisture out of them.

4. Return the empty potato pan to the stove and add the drained potatoes. Have the pan on a low heat, so not to burn them, and when all the steam has stopped evaporating add the pine nut mix, butter, double cream and salt and pepper, and mash.

Expelling moisture is the perfect way to prevent the potatoes releasing gluten, giving you nice fluffy mash instead of it being gloopy and stodgy.

Ingredients - Braised red cabbage:

200g cabbage (finely sliced), 10ml white wine vinegar 80g demerara sugar Half a bottle of red wine, (I steal some Chilean from Gary for its fruit and spice…)

8g toasted fennel seeds salt and pepper 2stp olive oil (any)

50g diced onion 5 sprigs of thyme (stripped)

Method:

1. Heat a saucepan with the olive oil until slightly smoking, add the onion and cabbage and continue to sweat on a medium heat until the cabbage has a shiny glaze.

2. Add the thyme leaves and fennel seeds and stir.

3. Once this is done add the white wine vinegar and the sugar, and stir in the half bottle of red wine.

4. Slowly cook until the cabbage is very soft and the sugar has given it a nice glaze, season to your liking and set aside.

Ingredients - Chocolate sauce

1 beef knuckle bone 1 chicken carcass (both obtained from your local butcher, they may even give them to you for free if you ask nicely!)

2 sprigs of rosemary 1 stick of celery (chopped) 1 white onion (diced) 1 red pepper (diced) 1 leek (washed and chopped) 2 carrots (chopped) 5 cloves of garlic (chopped with skin on) 500 ml of red wine - Bordeaux if possible 500ml of beef/veal stock, 5-8 g of dark bitter chocolate – minimum 70% but 100% if possible

Method:

1. Put your beef knuckle bones and chicken carcass in a tray and roast the bones to release the bone marrow. The gelatinous content of the marrow will thicken your sauce, so there’s no need for flour or any other thickening agent, making this dish completely gluten free.

Don’t burn your bones as it will mar the taste of the finished sauce.

2. Heat a saucepan - add a little olive oil and add your diced and chopped vegetables. The trick here is to burn the vegetables to the bottom of the pan and then add half of the red wine to de-glaze them.

This gives the sauce its colour and its richness.

Turn the heat down and check on your bones.

3. When the bones have been

roasted well and the marrow is out of the knuckle, add them both to the vegetables.

You will notice that some of the marrow and bits of the chicken have been left stuck to the tray.

These are the really flavoursome bits, so to remove them heat the tray on the stove and add a little of the red wine, then scrape with the back of a wooden spoon. This will lift the pieces and all the flavour that was stuck to the tray. Add this to the sauce pan.

4. Add your 500ml of beef stock to the pan and boil until the liquid has reduced to half.

5. You now need to strain the liquid into a separate pan, discarding the the bones and vegetables in the process. When you’ve done this put the remaining liquid back on the stove on a medium to high heat and continue reducing the stock until it has thickened slightly keep a wary eye on this as your sauce will thicken very quickly!

6. Once done remove from the stove, add the bitter chocolate, and whisk.

This sauce gives the whole dish gives a unique twist, the pairing of the bitter chocolate sauce with the sweetness of the onion mash and the earthiness of the venison marries very nicely indeed. Although it’s a lengthy process, the rewards are well reaped and you will be the talk of the dinner table for weeks to come.

Season the steak and cook to your liking; my preference for loin is medium rare.

When serving you will only need a little of the chocolate sauce because of the intensity of it - do not use this sauce as gravy; the whole dish should not be covered in sauce.

I serve this dish with fried parsnip crisps to garnish, the crunch of the parsnip adds a lovely texture to the plate.

the foliage. Always ask the shop to wrap it in paper right around the top of the foliage, or put it in a plastic bag so that it is completely protected.

Poinsettias have become synonymous with Christmas and millions of them will be given as gifts in the next few weeks. The plant’s association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson ‘blossoms’ sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias. From the 17th century, Franciscan friars in Mexico included the plants in their Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped leaf pattern is said to symbolise the Star of Bethlehem, and the red bracts represent the blood sacrificed at the crucifixion.

Sometimes a poinsettia will start wilting once you get it home, and continue to deteriorate, no matter what you do. This could be due to the plant having been stored in cold conditions in the shop before you bought it. Buying plants from a reputable supplier is therefore recommended.

Water poinsettias sparingly as overwatering can damage plants. As a rule of thumb, only water when the surface of the water has begun to dry out. The life of the plants is extended by humidity, so mist regularly. Feed monthly with a low nitrogen, high potassium fertiliser. They can suffer from grey mould if overwatered and may also be attacked by common pests of indoor plants such as scale insect and mealybug.

Poinsettias can be propagated by softwood cuttings in May but make sure that you wear gloves as the sap can be an irritant. In the United States there is a common misconception that the poinsettia is highly toxic. This idea was spread by a 1919 urban legend of a two-year-old child dying after consuming a leaf but its toxicity is relatively mild.

Some idea of the size of the poinsettia trade can be seen from the activities of one nursery in Kent. In March their poinsettia cuttings are taken from mother plants in Ethiopia which are then flown to a specialist nursery in Germany to be rooted and they then arrive in Kent at the end of June to be grown on for Christmas.

Poppies Day Nursery

The children and staff at Poppies Day Nursery, North Walsham spent Friday 16 November in their pyjamas as they raised funds for Children In Need.

Throughout the week, they also supported the Benjamin Foundation's 18th Birthday celebration by selling cakes, made by the staff, to their families.

Joint manager, Debbie Inch, has also been sharing with the staff, children and their families photos of her recent adventure in India, where she took part in a bike ride raising funds for women's cancer charities.

The nursery has been decorated with materials which she collected while in India and divas made by the children as they learned about Divali. The children and staff dressed in saris and Indian costumes for their curry lunch on Thursday. Debbie has been overwhelmed by the support she has received and would like to say thank you to all who have sponsored her.

Liberal Democrat Councillor for North Walsham East

Following Waitrose’s opening it is amazing we could even become a “Four supermarket town”, but the developers must have researched the demand. This idea of putting it on the Lawns site of Paston College seems very worthy of exploration. Not only could it generate the footfall to revitalise retailers in the Town Centre but if it provides the funds to enable Paston College to re-develop on their Griffons site and nearby, then the long term future of the College in North Walsham town centre will be assured. New buildings would also enable the College to broaden their range of courses, meaning fewer young people have to travel elsewhere for vocational courses. There are many “ifs” and “buts” in this, and the finance might just not add up, but it has to be worth a proper look.

The future of our Sports Centre looks more secure now. Well done to our local District Councillors who have fought hard to keep it open.

There are negotiations ahead between the High School (where I am Chair of Governors) and the District Council over the payments made to the School for the Sports Centre. The School is unable to subsidise it in any way.

I am spending an increasing amount of time on High School issues. It is very much Governors – all of them voluntary - who are accountable for what goes on in Schools not Councils, and there are major challenges ahead with growing expectations and fewer resources.

Getting resources for anything is proving increasingly hard. On roads maintenance things I used to be able to get done easily are now proving more difficult, whilst “schemes” such as new parking restrictions or speed limits are like gold dust. The scheme for double yellow lines on roads at the Manor Road/ Brick Kiln Road junction is going ahead, as are some changes to the speed limits on the A149 at Dilham and Bengate, but I will be astonished if there are many more in my Division for a few years.

From Molly Coddle the milkmaid to Jack, Jill and even a full-size panto cow; the cast of this year’s seasonal Sheringham show have arrived in town.

This year’s spectacular set will be designed once again by Matt Nunn, with Ron and Charlotte Sayer returning to oversee the music.

“This is the most ambitious pantomime the Sheringham Little Theatre has ever attempted,” she said. “It is a huge step but we are really looking forward to it.”

Among the actors joining vivacious Russel on stage will be Jonathan Broderick, as Jack, and Rachel Waring, as Jill.

Jonathan said: “I have never visited Sheringham before but it is such a lovely place – it is almost as if it has been made for Christmas.”

“This pantomime really will be something special and so we are relishing the prospect of being able to produce something truly magical this year,” Debbie added.

DVLA deal ‘good news for Norfolk Post Offices and motorists’

Former Postal Affairs Minister and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has described the deal that will see the Post Office continue to deliver tax disc and driving licence services as ‘good news for Norfolk Post Offices and motorists’.

Motorists will be able to tax their cars and apply for or renew driving licences at the Post Office for at least seven more years in a deal with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) announced yesterday by the Coalition Government.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “I’ve had many letters from constituents who were worried that their Post Office was in danger of losing this vital service, so I am extremely pleased that the Post Office bid has been successful. Post Offices are a vital part of our communities here in Norfolk and this news, along with the Coalition’s commitment to invest £1bn in the Post Office network, helps to put them on a more sustainable footing for the future. This news also furthers the Coalition’s aim to see Post Offices as a front office for Government and I am pleased that this contract means that the Post Offices will be able to bid for other services in the future. I am keen to work with local councils and the Post Office on this issue to see whether it could benefit Norfolk.”

Commenting further, Liberal Democrat Post Office Minister, Jo Swinson said “I am absolutely delighted that Post Office Ltd has won this important DVLA contract. A Bit of Christmas Magic

Members of Animal Magic Dog Club were delighted when Santa took time out from his busy schedule to drop into the Christmas Show last month. The annual event raised over £600 in aid of local charity PACT Animal Sanctuary. During these difficult economic times the Sanctuary is seeing donations fall while the number of animals needing urgent help is increasing, so were over the moon at the generosity shown by club members.

Christmas Tree Festival at St Andrew’s

St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham is gearing itself up to welcome 44 local and regional charities and voluntary organisations and an anticipated 3,000 visitors to Sheringham’s third annual Christmas Tree Festival which this year will run from 13th to 18th December. The festival, organised by a committee of members of various Sheringham churches and local volunteers, is hosted each year by various Churches of the town.

The objective of the festival is to provide a spectacular spiritual platform for charities to raise funds by attracting donations from visitors to the festival. Last year over £5,000 was raised, from stalls and donations, for the 42 charities that took part. Once again this year the trees will be decorated in truly imaginative ways that will uniquely portray the charities and causes.

There will also be a Prayer tree where you will be able to write a prayer and hang it on the tree.

The stunning displays will be supported by a background of seasonal carols and music. In the hall there will be various charity stalls where you may find some Christmas presents for family and friends. Light refreshments will also be available throughout the festival.

The festival will be open from 1 pm to 7pm Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday and from 1 pm to 6pm on Sunday and Tuesday.

On the final evening of the festival (Tuesday 18 December) at 7.30 pm there will be a not to be missed event ‘Carols Around the Trees’ which promises to be a truly magical and spiritual event.

Admission to the festival is free so come along, support your favourite charity and share in the love in this special community event.

Sleeping Beauty Dance Workshop – a Gothic Romance for all ages

After seeing a performance of Matthew Bourne’s new Dance Theatre production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ premiered at the Theatre Royal in Norwich last month, 30 AS level Performance students at Paston Sixth Form College had the privilege of participating in a workshop with two of the company members, Neil Westmoreland and Maddy Brennan on Friday 23 November. The new production brings the classic fairy tale ‘Sleeping Beauty’ into the 21st century creating a gothic romance for all ages with vampires and fairies.

All the students were thoroughly impressed with the production which is full of creative ideas, a range of dance styles, puppets and masks and many references to popular culture. What made the performance really special for them was the opportunity to meet Matthew Bourne in a Question and Answer session after the show but also to produce their own original choreography in a three hour dance workshop at the college the next day based on themes from the production.

People across our area are being urged to show some festive spirit by giving blood this December.

As the Christmas holidays approach and people find themselves busy preparing for the festive break, it’s easy to forget that appointment in the diary to donate blood.

As a result, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is asking people to think of hospital patients who need blood transfusions during the festive period just as much as at any other time of the year.

While many people will soon be taking time out to celebrate with friends and family, others will spend December receiving cancer treatment or undergoing life-saving surgery and emergency care, so NHSBT is calling on people in Cromer to make a date to donate now.

This winter also sees NHSBT aiming to recruit 100,000 new donors in 100 days to protect future blood stocks. Every year new donors are needed to replace existing donors who drop out of the system but this year, the need is more urgent after a dramatic decline in the number of younger donors signing up.

NHSBT lead donor relations manager Derek Carr said: “While we appreciate people are often very busy shopping for presents and planning get-togethers at this time of the year, donated blood is needed just as much as ever in December.

“As a result, we are appealing for people here in Cromer to show warm hearts by taking just a little time out to give blood this Christmas. We are particularly keen for younger people and those who haven’t given blood before to get in touch so that they can become the lifesavers of the future.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

Mothers’ Union Tuesday 5 November was our Annual Review meeting, which was presided over by the Rev Derek Earis. Derek welcomed us all and opened the meeting with prayers. Members were asked to hold a few minutes silence in remembrance of Kitty White and Doris Day who recently passed away, and to give thanks for all that they had done for Mothers’ Union in the past.

Following reports from the secretary, Dot Sidle, the treasurer, Evelyn Clynich, and our leader, Sybil Chambers, it was time to elect the officers for the coming year. The serving officers were all standing down after more than 24 years service between them for which we offered our heartfelt thanks.

If a decade or so ago, you’d asked your average visitor to Norfolk to name a famous Norfolk person, the chances are they would have chosen either Horatio Nelson or Bernard Matthews.

Bernard has recently posthumously regained media attention, by leaving his English and French estates in such a way that led to some big legal battles between his adopted children and his mistress. Limited space requires me to simplify the facts.

The dispute arose over Bernard leaving his French villa (with a value of Euro 15,000,000) to Odile, his mistress of 20 years. French succession law imposes ‘forced heirship’, (i.e. you are restricted as to whom you can leave your assets). The French rules required Bernard to give 75% of his French assets to his children and he was only free to leave Odile

25%. Three of his four children insisted on exercising their rights, and on that basis, Odile could only have a 44% share of the villa. Those children (who had received substantial assets from their father during his lifetime) also brought a claim that the English estate should discharge their liability for French inheritance tax on the villa. It is worth mentioning as part of the wider picture that the son who agreed that Odile could take his share of the French villa had received his father’s residuary estate worth £40,000,000.

There was abundant evidence that Bernard knew that he was required under French forced- heirship rules to benefit his children by his French estate; but, there was also good evidence that he did not intend that his English estate should bear the tax on his French estate.

The French succession rules were applied to the villa and the children received their enforced share; however, under English law the children had to pay the tax on their French inheritance from their own resources as they were unsuccessful in disputing the English Will. It was quite clear that Bernard had never wanted his children to benefit further from his

Church and F.A.L.C.O.N. The intention is to build, both a showcase for local talented musicians, and a performance opportunity for pupils from the Purcell School, giving audiences and performers alike a rewarding, enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

F.A.L.C.O.N will now be an annual childcentred festival, providing opportunities for children to engage with and experience the creative arts, alongside a programme of occasional events with F.A.L.C.O.N ‘flyingout’ to schools and other venues. In building towards the festival we aspire to in the future, we are inevitably looking for practical and material support, and would be enormously grateful for any help and support you felt able to give. A generous donation to the retiring collection, would be an enormous help to both groups and very gratefully received.

Meg Starling - Biography: Meg Starling has always enjoyed singing and since moving to Norfolk in 1976 has studied with Rita Green, John Aplin and Rae Woodland MBE. Meg is a committed recitalist and has a special interest in early music. She is an experienced soloist, having appeared with numerous choral societies and has a repertoire spanning six centuries from Dowland and Purcell to Britten and Vaughan Williams. She sings with the Creakes Choral Group and last year returned to opera when she joined North Norfolk Chamber Opera to perform Sister Angelica in Puccini's Suor Angelica.

Peter Trent - Biography: Peter has lived and worked in Great Ryburgh for the past 30 years. He took up the lute in his teenage years, finishing his formal studies with Anthony Rooley at Trinity College of Music.

He studied period bow making with Norwich Luthier David Van Edwards from the mid 90s and tonight he is playing the lute with Meg including some of his favourite music by John Dowland.

Superfast broadband is on its way to Norfolk – Lamb

Norman Lamb has welcomed the news that the Coalition Government’s plans to bring superfast broadband to Norfolk have been approved by the European Commission.

This approval paves the way for the Coalition Government’s £530m rural broadband scheme.

Work on laying cables can now start in earnest for local authority broadband projects all around the UK, including Norfolk.

The Coalition announced last year that Norfolk would get £15million to provide superfast broadband across the area.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “Superfast broadband is crucial to build a strong economy, where everyone has the opportunity to make a success of their business. This will create jobs and growth for us in Norfolk and ensure we can compete fairly with the big cities. It is also very important for local and national government to deliver public services effectively online and increasingly people want broadband to go about our everyday lives. For too long, our area has missed out on investment in broadband. That’s why I’m glad that the European Commission has approved the Government’s plans.”

BUSY YEAR

News From the Council Chamber 27th November, 2012

Market Place - A letter was submitted from the County Council regarding the Council’s complaint about the recent surfacing treatment undertaken in the Market Place. It was agreed that the County Council be informed that unfortunately not all the remedial work promised has been undertaken and asking for this to be carried out.

Pigeons - The District Council continues to assess the pigeon problem in the town centre and have stated that numbers appear to be increasing again and they are in the process of writing to two landlords encouraging them to proof their buildings to avoid complaints about droppings on the pavement. The use of the gel has been a huge success.

The District Council will continue to use the various measures available to minimise any problems associated with the pigeons within the town centre.

Sports Centre - Mr. Morse, Chairman of the Governors, High School gave an update on the situation. Reference was made to the District Council’s report which the Town Council did not support.

Car Parks - Details of the Heads of Terms for Midland Road were discussed and it was agreed that in view of the number of discrepancies not to sign the lease. Figures were submitted on the effect of introducing evening charges. It was reported that there is now recognition that the Mundesley Road car park is not fit for purpose and an engineer will be visiting the car park to advise on future options. The local Chamber of Trade is pressing the case for a car parking charging policy for the town that reflects the needs of North Walsham.

Cemetery - It was agreed that future requests for the reservation of burial plots which will be considered by the Parks & Cemetery Committee and approved in special circumstances, due to the number of requests being received in respect of Burial Plans.

Estimates and Precept - The Town Council approved the Precept for 2013/14 financial year at £156,000.

Christmas/New Year Office Hours - The Town Council office will be closed from 12.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve and will Reopen on Wednesday 2nd January, 2013.

Next meeting - The December meeting of the Town Council will be held on Tuesday 18th December, 2012 at 7.00 p.m. The Planning Committee meeting will be held at 6.30 p.m. on the same evening.

Grumpy Old Man - Christmas

Very many of us, myself included, regard the so-called festive season with dread. The celebration of the birth of Christ is now trampled under a three month saga of rampant commercialisation which we cannot escape.

It is no longer possible to look forward to Christmas with feelings of goodwill and pleasurable anticipation. Instead we are harried, coerced and cajoled by weeks of relentless and steadily rising pressure into a state of collective anxiety causing us to rush about like lemmings trying to conform by buying goods and gifts and stocking up with enough indulgent food to stand a siege, as though the shops were due to close for a month. But they only shut for one day.

This horrid state of affairs has come about through exploitative commercial pressure and has reached a pitch where some sort of control is needed but nobody dare apply it.

I used to love Christmas and the warm and happy feeling it engendered during the run up to it during December. Nowadays, by the time December arrives I am fed up with hearing about it and paste on a smile in order to

conform with the imperative to be jolly so as to keep out of trouble. How wonderful it would be to get back to the situation in my youth when Christmas Day and Boxing Day were the only days off work and January was the only month for sales. Back to the time when the year had some real shape. Now if you fall ill over the Christmas and New Year extended holiday period you discover that your doctors have shut up their surgeries whilst the supermarkets never close.

Going to the local church at midnight on Christmas Eve was to understand what the wonder of it, the Faith, the Belief, was all about. It felt good. I haven’t been for years as the sincerity has been knocked out of it. It is now Xmas – the X standing for Xcess and life is like the DFS sale, perpetual and deceptive, where nobody wants to pay the full price for anything, including transgressions in a world of discontent.

Self indulgence has cost us a great deal. Is it not ironic when in these politically correct times a Christian street preacher is arrested for allegedly causing offence to non Christians by

North Walsham Table Tennis Hancock Taken Distance Twice But Remails Undefeated

At Hunworth in the first division Outlaw’s Colin Humphries, John Hancock and Steve Patterson hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane and the John’s Vaughan and Batchford. Some flashes of brilliance saw Beane win a tight opener in five against Patterson, before Vaughan took the first set from Hancock 11-6.

The Outlaw just lost five points as he took the next two sets, but Vaughan dug deep to force a decider as he took the fourth 11-7. However a gritty display from Hancock saw him win the fifth 11-5. Batchford beat Patterson in four before Hancock won in straight against Beane.

Humphries played a tactical game, moving Batchford around the table as he won 10-12, 11-7, 12-10, 14-12 and Patterson edged Vaughan in five tight sets. And then Hancock once more went the distance but again was victorious as he defeated Batchford 10-12, 11-2, 11-7, 7-11, 11-3. Patterson then beat Beane in four and Vaughan was in control

during his win over Humphries in straight. The doubles went to the hosts to conclude a 7-3 win for Outlaws. And the Hunworth trio went one better four days later as they won 8-2 away to NWSCB. Hancock had a more comfortable night and still has not been defeated in the League since his return five years ago having now notched up 193 consecutive singles victories. Meanwhile NWSCA had a good win in the quarter-finals of the Knockout Doubles Cup as they defeated defending champions Gresham School 5-1. NWSCE lost 0-6 to Goblins.

NW Town F.C. MATCH REPORTS

The last two weeks of November saw the 1st team only play once, losing at home to Beccles 3-1 when they led for much of the game from a Broom free kick. It was a good performance from the team, who despite being on a losing streak, worked hard, played some excellent football at times and deserved something from the game. To improve Town’s fortunes they welcome into the squad Broom and Wheeler from Cromer and Aylsham respectively, and 30

table on the fourth. A fluke net-cord at 11-10 gave Sawyer the win to keep NWSCD alive. The doubles continued the tense finish to the night as Jack Bramwell and Andy Marsh saved four set points to take the first set of the doubles 12-10. It was then Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone’s turn to save a total of seven set points as they came back from 4-10 to take the second set 14-12. The Pirates needed three chances to take the third 12-10 and they took the fourth 11-8 to wrap up a close 6-4 match win.

The reserves have lost their last 3 matches albeit against good opposition including Mulbarton and Easton who are 1st and 2nd respectively. Prior to that they had beaten Thorpe Village 4-1 with a double from Edwards, and sit 5th in Division 3. They face Easton at home on the 8th and Loddon away on the 15th December.

The ‘A’ side have continued their mixed form

with a 3-0 home defeat to East Ruston in the league in a Friday night game following a convincing 2-0 home victory against Mundesley in the Benevolent Cup to make the quarter finals. Goals came from Dunlop who has now scored 6 this season and Lamb who now has 2. They face Horning on the 1st, Corpusty on the 8th and Corpusty again on the 15th December.

The Sunday side lost 4-1 in their last game but had beaten Rollesby the previous week in the Sunday Senior Cup 7-1, with a hat-trick for Wilton, to make the last 8 of the competition.

They now face arguably the number 1 ranked team left in Windmill FC from the Yarmouth league. They face Marlborough in the league cup on the 9th and Sprowston in the league on the 16th December.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

On 17 November we held our Christmas Sale in the St Benets Hall, North Walsham and I am happy to report that £1623.32 was raised for the cats in our care. Despite the rain, the sale was very well attended and a steady stream of customers passed through the doors.

We always enjoy this event as so many friends and fellow cat lovers come and support us and those who have had cats from us update us with news of their beloved companions.

Cats like Vikki, re-homed by us in 2004, had always lived outside until she came into care but now never attempts to set a foot outdoors, even when she goes round the country with her family in their caravan. Vikki sends us postcards from the many places she visits and is a much travelled cat. Also, looking at photographs of two kittens which left for a new home in the summer with two of our new volunteers, Rachel and Ant, and seeing how much they have grown; or talking to the couple who asked for our help, having bought a holiday cottage and discovering they had a feral colony living close by, which was rapidly increasing in size and using their garden as a toilet. They trapped all the cats, took the adults to be neutered and brought the kittens to us to be re-homed. So many stories we could tell and so many cats we have helped over the years.

Our autumn planting has gone extremely well and in fact everything was finished ahead of schedule.

Although in Vicarage Street two trees have been uprooted in the tubs. Everything else is starting to look good with the sorry exception of our poor cross in the Church Yard. We are finding that the pigeons are having a field day with our young pansies. They have stripped all the buds and leaves. We are at the moment at a bit of a loss as to what to do about this. Current thinking is that we will leave them for a week or two and see if they make any sort of acceptable recovery, otherwise we shall have to think again and maybe replant the whole bed. The situation is not helped by dog owners allowing their dog’s free range of the Church Yard. Large paws (and small paws) are flattening the plants. Some people seem to think that this is entirely acceptable, even though there is a notice on the entrance gate asking people to keep dogs on leads. The site is after all consecrated ground. This of course brings me to the on going problem of dog waste. When we work on these beds, sometimes in not very good weather, we have a bag for our weeds and pruning’s and another for dog waste. Sometimes the dog waste bag contains more than our garden bags, and working on these beds, including the precinct, is at times quite unpleasant. Some of our ladies have refused to help with these two areas, and who can blame them?

Christmas is coming…………..

The tinsel is out, the tree is up and fairy lights are a plenty!

In the canine and feline world however, Christmas is not such a fun time.

There is sometimes a lot of disruption to everyday life with more people in the house, some of them not very well known. The cat’s usual sleeping place on the spare bed is suddenly unavailable and there is a great big tree in the front room!

So, sometimes our pets get upset at Christmas and when you really stop to think, it’s no surprise why. With so much sudden change, a dog or cat with an already nervous disposition may well be tipped over the edge and start protesting with strange and somewhat unwelcome behaviours. Cats may start to urinate or ‘scent mark’ in the house, they may become more vocal and start picking fights with their housemates – of any species.

Dogs tend to get vocal and disruptive; the tree may be used as a lavatory, after all that’s what trees are for outside – silly humans for bringing them inside!

There are things you can do to relive the stress on your pets but most of all you need to consider them in your plans. Try to keep their routine as close to ‘normal’ as possible.

Provide an alternative bed if the spare room is unavailable, maybe a crate with a blanket draped over. The cat may insist on sleeping on top of the wardrobe for the duration of the festivities, let them, as this is where they feel comfortable with everything that is going on.

Some other tips for Christmas with animals Don’t buy a pet as a present – so many end up as unwanted gifts and in rescue homes by New Year.

Don’t feed your dog chocolate – it is toxic to dogs – they can become extremely unwell and some quantities of dark chocolate can be fatal.

Provide a den or use a plug-in calming device (available from the surgery) to ease the nerves of stressed animals when everyone arrives for Christmas.

Keep routines as normal as possible If you are worried about your pet’s behaviour during Christmas or at any other time during the year do get in touch with the nurses at Sheringham for some sound advice.
