Harvest Festival and Macmillan Coffee Morning at St. Nicholas House School On Tuesday 25 September St. Nicholas House School held its Harvest Festival service for parents and grandparents. To open the service Form 4 performed a short play called ‘Elijah and the Silver Coins’ then children in Form 1 proudly displayed their paintings of autumn trees which they had created using finger, hand and arm painting. Form 3 read a poem called ‘I am a red apple’ and Form 2 showed the pictures they had drawn of their favourite foods together with a ‘Thank you’ they had written.

To conclude the service Form 5 said a prayer before the Rev Earis blessed the food that had been donated. All donations this year went to the Bishops Bridge Centre for the homeless and the Norwich Food Bank run by the Norwich Cathedral.

Later on in the week the school held its annual coffee morning to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event was well attended by parents, grandparents, children and staff, all tucking in to the delicious cakes and biscuits made by parents and the school kitchen. A thoroughly enjoyable morning was had by all and we raised a total of ÂŁ94.

Restorative approaches in Norfolk

In Norfolk we believe that restorative approaches work by building relationships, maintaining relationships and repairing relationships when harm has been caused.

Restorative approaches support emotional and social development and literacy and equip people with problem solving skills and the ability to manage conflict when it occurs.

Restorative approaches help build respect, responsibility, resolution and reintegration.

In broad terms, Restorative Approaches constitute an approach to challenging behaviour, which puts repairing harm done to relationships and people, over and above the need for assigning blame and dispensing punishment (Wright, 1999).

Many people will behave and work in a restorative way without recognising it. This is because restorative principles underpin a variety of different practice models and techniques. If you are working with people, there is a high level of support and a high level of control. You have a clear bottom line about what you can and can’t do, and everyone involved has an equal voice in resolving an issue.

Restorative principles are: • Respect • Responsibility • Reflection • Working ‘with’ people • Giving everyone involved an equal voice • Fair and consistent process • Honesty • Inclusion • Empowering people to be part of

solving the problems they face • Clear bottom line

Restorative approaches provide us with the foundation to build, maintain and repair relationships positively with families, communities, staff and partners. By working together with people, in equal measures of high support and high control, we can achieve our aim to develop responsibility and ownership, and from that, sustainable families and sustainable communities.

Norfolk County Council Children’s Services is the lead partner in a multi-agency partnership that aims to establish Norfolk as a restorative County by 2015.

There has been significant progress since 2010 and the benefits of restorative approaches have been shown in a number of local arenas including criminal justice, education, communities and social care.

The outcomes that have been experienced as a consequence of restorative activity in the county has prompted Norfolk County Council to announce their commitment to becoming a restorative authority. These outcomes include:

• Reduction in Looked After Children in the Youth Justice System by 52% • 19% reduction in Police call-outs to Residential Homes • Reduction in school exclusions • Improved school attendance rates • Improved school attainment

• Reduction in persistent absentees • Improved victim satisfaction rates • Reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour • Empowered communities • Reduction in first-time entrants to the youth justice system

There are a lot of exciting developments happening across Norfolk to embed restorative approaches in all our work with children, young people, families and communities.

Norfolk is seen as a leader both nationally and internationally in the field of restorative approaches. We have been gathering lots of evidence about the impact and will continue to do so.

The restorative approaches developments are overseen by a partnership board. The partners are: Norfolk County Council Norfolk Youth Offending Team District Councils Norfolk Constabulary Norfolk and Suffolk Probation Trust Norfolk Magistrates Association Norfolk Association of Town and Parish Councils Norfolk Rural Community Council Voluntary Sector Organisations Schools

WOOLLEN POPPIES SUPPORT WAR HEROES

Local knitting enthusiasts have been busy putting their talent to good use by creating knitted or crocheted poppies in time for Remembrance Day. Anglia Funeral Services are raising money for the Royal British Legion by offering these handcrafted poppies for a donation to the charity.

New life for North Walsham town centre?

Following a detailed analysis of retail trends and demand/supply, consultants have advised the North Walsham Leadership of Place steering group that the development of a centrally located supermarket could provide the impetus for town centre regeneration.

The North Walsham Leadership of Place group (a partnership of local authority, and local private enterprise, education and community groups), commissioned consultants S.P.A. to look at retail demand in the town, especially the capacity of sites and existing premises to accommodate future development. SPA’s report, which was discussed at a meeting of the steering group on 15 October, proposed a number of options concerning the ‘vitality and viability’ of the town centre. The report concludes that there is significant interest in the town from supermarket retailers and that a development of this type could create the step change necessary to attract more shoppers into the town centre which in turn could lead to wider investment from non-food retailers.

SPA advise that the most effective way to exploit this interest for the benefit of the town as a whole would be to identify appropriate sites for a supermarket outlet close to the town centre to encourage linked trips, which would have the distinct benefit of increasing the number of shoppers with easy access to other existing retail outlets. The report concluded that one of the most appropriate sites would be

one based on Paston Sixth Form College’s Lawns campus. This site would have the advantage, the report added, of enabling the college to invest strongly in its other sites in the town centre.

The steering group heard that an informal discussion had been undertaken with the College. But all agreed that while they could see the advantages in the general thrust of the report, any discussions as to how best to proceed are at a very early stage and significant detailed work with a full business case and viability analysis of the proposal needs to be undertaken.

David Robertson, North Walsham Town Mayor, said, “I think this is a very interesting idea and one we should certainly explore.

North Walsham is a wonderful town full of life, but if we can bring even more activity to the town centre, so much the better.”

Mair Stockdale, Chair of North Walsham Chamber of Trade, said, “Anything that can bring more potential customers to the existing excellent retail offer in North Walsham should be encouraged. The Chamber of Trade looks forward to taking part in any future discussions.”

Council Supports North Walsham Athlete North Walsham athlete Callum Brown is being supported by North Norfolk District Council and DC Leisure in his bid to become a future Olympic hammer thrower.

Callum, currently the English Schools Champion and Commonwealth Youth Games Champion in 2011, has been given free use of the gym at North Walsham’s Victory Swim and Fitness Centre, for six months.

Tom FitzPatrick, Deputy Leader for North Norfolk District Council said, “The District Council is committed to showing strong support for athletes in the local community to help them reach their potential. I have been active in sport as a competitor, coach and official and believe it is an ideal way for young people to make the most of their abilities. It has been a very exciting year for sport, it’s important that we champion future stars such as Callum Brown and build on the momentum gained by the success of the recent Olympic Games. Callum is a promising young athlete and this award is being given to him in recognition of his sporting achievements to date and to support his aspirations to become a world-class, Olympic competitor.”

The gym membership was awarded to Callum Brown at a ceremony at the Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham last month.

Kevin Grieve, Principal of Paston Sixth Form College, said, “We are a very successful college and we want to build on that success.

Our first priority has to be the college and its students. We have always been at the heart of North Walsham and we will be very interested to see if further detailed analysis shows that this proposal could be of benefit to both ourselves and the town as a whole. There are a whole host of questions that need to be answered and issues to be resolved across a number of organisations and such a development is not going to happen overnight.”

North Norfolk District Council Cabinet will be considering the report at its meeting in December. In the meantime the development of an agenda of further investigations and discussions will take place to inform the detailed work on the overall viability of the proposal.

Method 1. Heat a non-stick frying pan 2. Add the diced onions and cherry tomatoes, sweat them off until the onion is clarified and the tomatoes are slightly soft.

3. Add the toasted pecans and gnocchi and continue to cook untill gnocchi is soft.

4. To this add the honey, and season.

5. In a separate pan heat up a little olive oil until slightly smoking, add the strips of duck breast and sear on each side until the skin is crispy and the duck is cooked to your liking.

6. Once the duck is cooked, set aside to rest and in the gnocchi pan.

7. Add the spinach leaves and wilt.

8. Put the gnocchi mix in the centre of your plate and place the duck strips on top.

9. Add your garnish and drizzle the plate with the balsamic vinegar.

Ingredients (per portion) One Gressingham duck breast cut into strips and seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper 20g Norfolk honey 50g gnocchi (pre made) salt, pinch pepper, pinch five leaves of basil (shredded) 35g pecans (toasted) four cherry tomatoes (halved) 10ml balsamic vinegar

Acupuncture: another way of helping with painful, arthritic joints. Some dogs find this very helpful.

And joining him on stage will be Cornelius Garret, playing Jack’s father. Cornelius is also returning to the venue, having played the role of the evil Abanazar back in 2010.

“We are lucky enough to have Jonathan Broderick with us this year, playing Jack, and Rachel Waring, as Jill. Both these young actors have recently graduated from drama school.

“Then we have hilarious double act James Lavender and Benedict Martin, who will be taking on the roles of Ralph and Snotmill.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are always pleased to see our cats and kittens leave for loving new homes but especially so when the cat(s) in question have come into care and, because of their age/health, we believe they will be with us for some time. When Stephanie was contacted to take Pebbles and Mudge into care (two 16 year old cats whose owner had recently died), she had concerns that once with us they would have to wait a long time before someone was prepared to give them a new home. To receive a telephone call the same day from a person who wanted older cats and did not mind what colour or sex providing they were healthy, was really good news for these delightful cats. They hardly had time to settle in, go for their vet check and be vaccinated before they were off to their new home together.

Interest has also been shown in Trinnie, a lovely little tabby and white cat, 13 years young who requires medication for hyperthyroidism and, fingers crossed, she will have left for a new home when you read this article. Hyperthyroidism is quite common in older cats (Spice, one of my older girls, has recently been diagnosed with this condition) but it is easily treated. However, it takes a little time to get under control and if, like Spice, your cat does not like taking tablets a little guile has to be used. Hiding the tablet in some meat has solved the problem for us.

Plans are now well advanced for our Christmas Sale in the St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham on 17th November and we hope that lots of our friends and supporters will be able to join us there.

Rescue and rehoming

Are you considering a new pet? There are many local rescue centres inundated with animals requiring homes, however before embarking on a rescue crusade there are things you need to consider: COST - You will need to feed/vaccinate/worm/de-flea/neuter/cover unexpected vets bills and make a donation to the rescue centre.

CARE - You will need to provide adequate walks and play for whatever breed or species you take on COMPANY - Consider how much time you will be able to spend with your new pet when they first arrive, a puppy that has just come from a large litter going into a home where he will be completely alone for hours on end will probably become withdrawn and may develop separation anxiety issues.

VACCINATIONS - Starting at £60 for the complete puppy course (2 injections 2 weeks apart) this vaccination gives protection from some of the most deadly canine diseases including Lepotospirosis which can be transferred to humans. Starting from £57 for the complete kitten course (2 injections 3 weeks apart) this vaccination give protection against Flu, Enteritis and Leukaemia all of which can be fatal.

WORMING - Essential for puppies and kittens from around 2 weeks of age when still with mum, then at 10-12 weeks (around the time of 2nd Vaccination) then monthly until 6 months, at which point a 3 monthly regime should be continued for life. Many worm species pose a risk to human health.

FLEA CONTROL - Also an important, on-going part of responsible pet ownership, monthly flea and tick control is essential for happy healthy pets. Cost approx. £30/month (20kg dog) – fleas and tick, £23/month for cat – including worm control and mite control INSURANCE - An essential, though not yet legal, requirement of dog/cat ownership. You need to read the small print of each policy to ensure you are getting the cover you require. Beware of 12 month policies, often cheaper monthly costs but will only cover a condition for a year, after which you will not be able to make further claims. Rough guide to cost – Labrador puppy in Sheringham £30/month, Domestic Short Haired kitten living in Sheringham £15/month. Having talked mostly about puppies and kittens above, the same applies for any age pet you may take on, they will still need regular vaccinations, worming etc despite their age. Insurance costs will vary for older animals.

RESCUING - If you have considered all the costs and other implications of becoming a pet owner and are still keen to go ahead it can be very rewarding, a companion to come home to or a great way to get some exercise with your dog. Rescue centres are often full to capacity of various breeds, usually a lot of Staffy type dogs are available. This particular breed make very loyal companions though as with any breed or species their compatibility with other dogs, cats or children in the family needs to be investigated prior to adoption.

Often these animals have been dumped, neglected or abused by previous owners leaving them scared and vulnerable. With little history available about their past it can be difficult to assess their temperament without a little trial and error, usually after a few weeks in the rescue centre the staff have the measure of these animals and will make recommendations about their ideal home and situation.

North Walsham Special Constable Receives Award as 2012 NOSCAs Winners Announced

A celebration of the work of individuals and teams of police officers and staff, together with members of the public, to improve the quality of life for the residents of Norfolk took place last month at Dunston Hall.

It may have been cold on the morning of Sunday 28 October but this did not stop the Bluebell Pond volunteers from arriving at 10am to carry out the Autumn pond clean.

By 11.30am the 20 ton skip provided by Cliff & Chris Cushion was full to the brim with overgrown plants removed from the pond and its surrounding area.

The event highlights the work of officers, staff and members of the local community who have all given something back to our county and in the process have helped the Constabulary improve their service.

Awards were given which recognised their valuable contributions to the work of the Force and speaking about the evening Chief Constable Phil Gormley said: “Last night was about recognising some of the fantastic work that takes place in our communities across the county, particularly when the Constabulary and local residents work side-by-side. It was a tremendous evening, and I’m extremely proud of the dedication and commitment shown by so many people in helping to continue to make Norfolk such a wonderful place to live, work and visit.”

The winners of each award category were announced on the night and each received a cut-glass Caithness Crystal trophy, presented by the award category sponsor.

North Walsham Players Variety Showtime

Director Colin Jeary would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who supported the North Walsham Players 'Variety Showtime' at North Walsham Community Centre on Friday 26 October.

The Players pulled out all the stops, following several setbacks during the rehearsal stages to make it yet another successful show. The show featured several song and dance routines including ‘Don't stop believing’, a medley which celebrated the Great Britain Olympic medallists and also Happy Days which featured a slideshow of photos taken during the rehearsal stages of the show. There were also comedy sketches and a guest appearance from past member Roseanna Kemp who sang 'Wishing you were somehow here again' and 'Love never dies'.

The cast consisted of 16 people of various

ages, some of whom had never been on stage before, and a technical crew of four.

After all the expenses were paid for, the Players were able to kick start their year’s

house for their help and support, as without them it would not have been possible to put on the show. Lastly I would like to say a special thank you to Carl Bird Ltd, Andrea's Photography, Showcase Gallery & Flax & Finch for their help and support’.

On Monday 29 October Bob and Heather of The Health Food Centre in North Walsham were thrilled to present John with Rufus, the giant bear.

John had correctly guessed his name in a competition and, in doing so, had helped raise £100 for Hillside Animal Sanctuary.

Paralympic Torch Visits Sainsburys Store in North Walsham

The Paralympic Torch visited Sainsbury's North Walsham last month as part of a special tour across the UK.

Colleagues and customers had the opportunity to hold the Paralympic Torch of Danny Leech, who was one of the 620 torch bearers in the 24 hour relay from Stoke Mandeville to the Olympic Park in August.

Sadler’s Wood wins prestigious Green Flag Award for the first time

North Norfolk District Council is celebrating winning the first ever ‘Green Flag Award’ for Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham.

The Green Flag Award is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK, and indicates that efforts to make Sadler’s Wood a welcoming place for visitors have been recognised. The award acknowledges high standards of facilities and judges will have assessed Sadler’s Wood on key criteria including maintenance and sustainability.

A prestigious green flag will be raised to mark the award. The flag will be proudly flown at Sadler’s Wood for a year.

Sainsbury's North Walsham colleague, Tracy Sadler, also presented a cheque to Pauline Robinson, an Olympic Torch bearer, for SCOPE from a fundraising day at the store in August.

For a once in a lifetime moment at the store the Paralympic Torch and Pauline's Olympic Torch ‘kissed’, just as the torches did during the relays.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

Our autumn planting campaign has gone extremely well, with hundreds of polyanthus and pansies being planted in our new containers in the town. The Church doorway is especially good, as it now has new self watering three tier towers each side of the porch, which we hope will enhance the entrance. The Scout bed is looking great having had the letters trimmed to shape and golden pansies planted round the edge.

In fact over the winter months we expect the whole town to be looking very attractive. Our thanks in no small part must go to Hadfields of North Walsham for supplying all the plants as well as to all our helpers, including the three new ones who have now joined us, and the person who provided the compost for our new containers. A big thank you must also go to the very kind gentleman who loaned us the large trailer, which made our job so much easier. A couple of days after the Church Cross had been planted up we discovered that eight of the pansies had been uprooted. However on closer inspection we discovered that the plants had been ripped from the roots and this we have been advised could have been done by pigeons. The pigeons were certainly taking a great interest as soon as we moved away. We would like to take this opportunity, once again, to invite any of you who would like to come to attend our A.G.M on Monday 12 November at 2 pm in the Council Chamber.

North Walsham Probus Club

The Second World War holds various memories for many, some of whom may not even have been alive during the hostilities. Trevor Hewett, an aeronautical archaeologist, is reminded of the experiences of his late father, Derek and shared these with Probus Club members at their October meeting.

Derek, then 14, was living with his parents at Frettenham, which during the war was in the flight path of the 458th U.S. Bomber Group. At about 6am on 8 May 1944 the family was awakened by a tremendous explosion. Derek’s father Ralph ran from their house towards the site of the explosion, about 150 yards from their home, pursued by his son carrying his

trousers. The area, which has since been excavated by Trevor, was littered with the remains of a Liberator four engine bomber, the ‘Boston Belle’, which had crashed shortly after takeoff. Ralph, together with his son, succeeded in dragging some of the four survivors from the scene, in spite of the intense heat which was sufficient to melt their boots. Their efforts were formally recognised by a commendation for bravery signed by Sir Winston Churchill. The bodies of the six members of the crew who died were eventually interred in an American war cemetery at Maddingley, Cambridgeshire, together with 3,600 others.

Trevor researched the lives of those four who

survived and their less fortunate fellow crew members. One of the survivors, Lt. Arthur J Doyle, achieved the rank of colonel and fought both in Korea and Vietnam, retiring in 1972.

The co-pilot, who was killed, although an American citizen had earlier volunteered for the Royal Canadian Air Force before America entered the war and subsequently transferred to the American services after Pearl Harbour.

Among Trevor’s memorabilia were fragments of the aircraft, the remains of a flying helmet, dog tags and even a defused incendiary bomb.

Trevor has located 40 crash sites in Norfolk.

Significantly most of the crashes were not due to direct enemy action but a failure to take off.

The Club meets again on the 28 November at the Community Centre when new members will be welcome.

Autumn’s upon us...

It has been a marvellous year if you’re a slug or snail, but for the rest of wildlife and for us gardeners included it has been unpredictable and far from ideal. The strange start to the year adversely affected our frogs as warm water encouraged early spawning, only to be scuppered by the torrential downpours of colder rainwater in mid to late spring. Our butterfly numbers have also had a massive decline this year due to the same weather, and many ground-nesting species including underground bees have had similarly poor breeding success.

Despite the weather, it has been a very busy year for Barry and Rob’s Gardening Services.

We diligently work in all weathers (excepting a few jobs!) to offer a professional and friendly garden creation and maintenance service. Our success however is down to our wonderful clients and gratitude must go to them for offering us many interesting challenges with much reward from the services we have offered. We have put together wildlife ponds, erected numerous types of fences, tidied borders, laid turf, planted shrubs and flowers, mowed and treated lawns, made vegetable

plots including raised beds, planted and maintained orchards, trimmed hedges, felled and pruned trees as well as hung bird boxes and provided many people with useful advice on wildlife-friendly gardening.

From little acorns...

It has now been over a year since our first appearance in local magazines and since we first started our new business. November is the time of year that most things in our gardens and around our countryside are coming to a close: annuals have completed their lifecycles, perennials and shrubs have all produced seed and berries, and birds are beginning to flock around our gardens. Jays are very busy caching acorns for the winter and look overhead for Pink-Footed Geese arriving from Greenland.

Autumn is very much upon us and now is the ideal time to look at planning for a new garden year. It is an exceptional time to think what you want for your garden in the coming year – do you need new fencing or hedging to help divide or border your garden; would you prefer a classic, formal look or a less formal setting?

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh volunteer crew have received a more up to date Atlantic 75 to replace the Friendly Forester II, which has been on station since 2009 and been called out on service twenty two times. It is now over 17 years old and will go for disposal.

The newer Atlantic 75 is B 742 “Douglas Paley”, which has been based at Appledore in Devon since 1997. It was a gift from Mrs Evelyn Anne Paley in memory of her late husband Air Commodore Douglas Paley. It has just had a major refit at the RNLI workshops at Cowes, Isle of Wright.

Perhaps a secret garden or secluded oasis where you can relax from the stresses of life?

All this and lots more can be achieved with a little foresight, planning and know-how, and now is a great time to start.

The boats were changed over by the crew last month whenTim Grimmer and crew took to sea to give it a test run before accepting it on to station.

All the helms and crew took the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new boat on their normal Sunday training session. Senior helmsman Tim Grimmer said “we are pleased with this newer boat, it performed well and handles much better than the old one - the top speed is also improved at 35 knots.”

Happisburgh will be in line for a brand new boat in 2016.

greatly aided doctors by standardising the assessment of mental capacity and setting out what was needed in ‘best interests’ decisions in patients who lack mental capacity. The Act also created the Advance Directive (“AD”) (colloquially known as a “Living Will”) and the Lasting Power of Attorney - Health and Welfare (“LPA-H&W”). Enduring or Lasting Powers of Attorney relating to property and affairs have been possible since 1985, but the area of health and personal welfare was uncharted and dangerous legal territory.

Put simply, an AD allows you to specify in advance what treatment etc. you do or do not want in the future if you are ever mentally incapable of such decisions for yourself; whereas an LPA-H&W allows you to appoint one or more persons whom you trust to make decisions on your behalf, should you lack capacity.

It is important to make a distinction between ‘treatment’ and ‘care’. Healthcare professionals recognise four different classes of treatment: preventative, curative, palliative and lifesustaining. The differentiation relates to the intention rather than the type of treatment and some treatments may fall into more than one category.

Whereas the first three classes of treatment are fairly easy to define, what is ‘life-sustaining’ is not. It was therefore intentional that the Act did not provide a definition and so it has been left open

Norman Lamb highlights suicide support in rural communities

Norman Lamb MP, who as well as being MP for North Norfolk is Minister of State for Care and Support, and is responsible for the Government’s suicide prevention and support strategy, recently took part in an online debate hosted by AgriChatUK on mental health in the farming community.

This follows the publication in September of the Government’s suicide prevention strategy and the announcement of £1.5million Government funding for suicide prevention research. Farmers and agricultural workers were identified as high risk groups requiring particular attention.

Mr Lamb commented “People should never be afraid to ask for help A key part of addressing this problem is tackling the stigma around mental health issues. The suicide rate among the farming community, for example, is disturbingly higher than the average and our suicide prevention strategy gives practical guidance relevant to farmers. The Rural Stress Helpline also provides valuable support to anyone who needs it. A key part of addressing this problem is tackling the stigma around mental health issues, and that is why initiatives like the AgriChatUK debate and the “Time to Change” campaign, encouraging people to talk about mental health, are so valuable.”

Grumpy Old Man Serving our best interests!

I am going to tread into a dodgy area this issue – local politics! (universal groans from all!)

Looking back, it was a sad day when political parties took over Local Government and sadder still when it was decided to pay councillors attendance allowance, enabling people who would previously not have voluntarily served to take time off from their employment for Council duties and to enjoy a paid hobby.

Prior to that, councillors and aldermen (remember them?) were independent people with altruistic principles who stood for office to serve their fellows, concerned to put something back into the communities in which they had grown and prospered. They were, in the main, capable, well-respected, unfettered

by dogma and earned their reputations through their actions, mostly still manifest in fine public buildings, parks and amenities of which they were proud progenitors.

Nowadays men and women of this calibre stand very little chance of being elected to office as independent because people are conditioned to vote for political parties by the weight of expensive, organised campaigning.

Joining a party entails sacrificing individual independence in order to get elected and becoming part of a faction, which consequently means if it is a minority group you won’t get anything constructive done. If it is a majority group and does achieve something, no individual gets any kudos, nor the blame if it subsequently goes wrong.

It is hardly the recipe to spur people on.

Instead it crushes ambition.

The system is unlikely to change because those long-serving councillors enjoying their part time second careers in Local Government get too comfortable and are not obliged to retire in rotation after a set number of terms in office in order to make way for fresh faces and new thinking. This is a major cause of voter apathy and an obstacle to progress.

I rest my case and await howls of indignation which must surely ensue.

An evening at the Atrium with Broad appeal The fascinating story of the Norfolk Broads is being told at North Walsham Atrium in a special new slide show presentation.

Local historian Brian Hedge, who presented two sell-out shows called North Walsham Remembered earlier this year, returns to the community arts centre this Saturday 10 November.

His new digital show will include many rare slides of the Broads over the past century and will be accompanied by Brian’s entertaining, informative and lively commentary.

Refreshments will be available in the Atrium cafeteria from 6pm and also during the interval. The History of the Norfolk Broads show itself starts at 7pm and tickets at £5 can be bought from the Showcase Gallery in North Walsham Market Place or reserved from the Atrium (tel 01692 400080).

The exhibition Folding the Future by north Norfolk artist John Rance continues in the Atrium Gallery until November 30 with free showings from 10am-5pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am-1pm on Saturdays. Loosely inspired by origami, John’s work transfers delicate paper models into hard wooden objects retaining their soft appearance.

The Christmas season at the arts centre includes the festive family favourite Arthur Christmas(U) on Saturday 1 December at 11am and Thursday 6 December at 7pm, a sweet and confectionery workshop on Monday 3 December and an afternoon showing with free tea and cakes – or mince pies – of the ever-popular It’s A Wonderful Life (U) starring James Stewart on Friday 7 December at 3.30pm.

Festival is on Saturday 8 December (free entry) from 10am-5pm, Through the Wardrobe Storytelling for younger children on Saturday 8 December at 11am (tickets £3) and a specially written new version of The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe on stage from Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 December.

To make visiting The Atrium even easier there is a new box office where tickets can be booked online or over the phone.

The venue is also seeking volunteers to help with events from ushering to helping sell refreshments. Anyone interested in supporting the venue, with or without previous experience, is welcome to get in touch.

The Atrium is signposted off Spenser Avenue and can be found between the high school and North Walsham Sports Centre. It is wheelchair-friendly.

News from the Council Chamber – October 2012

Town Centre - Members discussed the state of the Market Place, following the recent resurfacing and agreed that the finished was not at all acceptable. It was noted that the County Council had now agreed with the Town Council’s comments and that May Gurney, the contractors, had inspected the area and had carried out some remedial work. It was agreed a letter of dissatisfaction be sent to the County Council.

Car Parks – the discussions are still ongoing with the District Council with regard to the proposal that the Town Council takes on the responsibility for the Mundesley Road and Midland Road car parks.

More recent discussions have been held with the Portfolio holder over the disgraceful state of the Mundesley Road car park – too many potholes and deep “crater” hole that people are refusing to park there.

Everyone is invited to join a moving ceremony this month, to give thanks for the people we love who have been touched by cancer.

Big C, Norfolk and Waveney’s own cancer charity, would like to invite everyone who has been affected by cancer to the Give Thanks ceremony.

The ceremony is being held at 7pm on 16 November at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, Norwich.

Big C’s community fundraising manager Les Cologne said: “Give Thanks is a beautiful ceremony, and it is always one of the landmarks of the year for Big C.

“Cancer changes lives - we want to come together to give thanks for the opportunity to know the people we have loved and lost and for the time we have with those who are still fighting as well as those who have fought and won. This non-denominational ceremony is for everyone and we want you all to feel welcome.”

There will be singing from the Norwich Young People's Theatre choir, readings, poems and a chance to light a candle for your loved one.

Two proposals were put to the Town Council and neither at this stage were accepted both of which would incur extra costs for repair plus maintenance costs.

Melbourne House – Members considered a report submitted from District Cllr. Nigel Lloyd regarding the late night activities for young people at Melbourne House and the cost to the Police and ratepayer in trying to control the events and keep young people safe.

Sports Centre – Members were given further information on the current situation regarding the Sports Centre. The District Council Cabinet would be considering a report this week. Members agreed that this should be an agenda item at the November meeting.

Town Guide – the Town Guide is currently under review and anyone wishing to advertise in the next edition is asked to contact the Town Clerk. It is intended to have a business listing in the next edition – more details from the Town Clerk. The East Coast Group Ltd., will be undertaking the printing on behalf of the Town Council.

Skatepark – Members were made aware that repairs were required to close some gaps between the ramps and surface. The cost of the repairs would be in the region of £3,700 and it would be necessary to close the park while the work is carried out. No date has been fixed.

Christmas Lights – the Annual Street Fair and switch on to be held on 1st December, 2012. Anyone wishing to have a stall in the Market Place to contact the Town Clerk.

Community First Responders (CFRs) volunteer in groups, and are activated by the service to attend 999 emergency calls within the community they live or work in.

They receive free training to help them provide vital basic life saving skills which can make the difference in a life or death situation before the arrival of an ambulance resource. Volunteers take it in turn to be 'on call' and carry basic first aid equipment and a simple-to-use automated external defibrillator (AED). The emergency operations centre sends them to the scene of category A (immediately life threatening) 999 calls.

First Responders are dispatched at the same time as the ambulance crew, but often arrive beforehand because they are based so locally. The responder then provides care until the ambulance arrives.

Sarah Thompson (North Walsham’s local coordinator) said: "Anyone living or working within this community can get involved with the scheme either as a first responder, or to help with other vital aspects of the scheme such as, fundraising or general admin help to the group.

It’s an incredibly rewarding experience and something which demonstrates great community spirit."

The EAST of England Ambulance Service Trust’s community partnership manager Andrew Barlow said: "As with any voluntary group, we need people to join up. The more members we can recruit, the more cover we can give. People can be on call for as little or as much time as they’re able; what’s important is that they want to contribute something worthwhile to North Walsham and its surrounding villages in a positive way.”

Government toughens up community sentences

Government reforms will ensure that every adult community sentence will include a form of punishment after research showed that this is more effective in reducing reoffending. People will also be given a right to request restorative justice, a change the Liberal Democrats called for at their recent conference.

Community-based punishments are more effective at reducing reoffending than short prison terms but have been seen by some as a “soft option”. Currently only around twothirds of community orders contain a punitive requirement, such as a curfew, fine, or unpaid work. These changes will see that figure rise

significantly in future to almost all adult community sentences.

MP Norman Lamb said “The key is to have sentences that are effective at protecting the public and in stopping reoffending. Short term sentences are costly and ineffective, with reoffending rates scandalously high.

Community-based punishments for less serious offences are the sensible approach. The Liberal Democrats have always said let’s follow the evidence so I welcome this announcement that will increase the use and effectiveness of community sentencing, as well as reassuring the public.”

North Walsham Table Tennis Two Draws for NWSCC

In the second division, Barracuda’s Derek Philpott, Sean Grimes, Chris Gould and Ray Amo hosted NWSCC’s Chris Johnson, Phil Mole and Toby Usher with Johnson comfortable against Philpott in the opener.

Mole recovered a five point deficit in the first set against Grimes before winning in straight, but Usher found his best shots coming back with interest from Gould who pulled one back for the Barracudas in three. Johnson won a very tight contest 16-14, 15-13, 12-14, 11-9 against Grimes, before Philpott won in straight against Usher.

The best contest of the night saw Mole make some remarkable returns when Gould was in full attack mode which Mole restricted by his heavy chop game to take the last three points from 8-8 in the fifth. Grimes beat Usher in four and Gould’s attack was too strong for Johnson as his win in straight levelled proceedings at 4-4. Mole then beat Philpott in straight before the doubles saw Gould and Amo battle Mole and Usher. It took Amo a while to get into the match from cold, but Barracudas clawed their way back from two sets down to win 9-11, 6-11, 12-10, 13-11, 11-7 to end the match as a draw. Brenda Baldock (playing up) took the place of Usher as NWSCC visited Poacher’s David Thompson, Stan Munn and Andy Woods. Johnson picked up a single against

Woods but lost both of his other two singles in four, however a Mole maximum – who went the distance with Woods – kept the visitors in contention and this time they won the doubles as Johnson and Mole defeated Thompson and Woods in four to end with another draw.

Baldock was also in action for her own team NWSCE as she joined husband Stan and Edna Stone for an away match against Crosscourt’s John Welsh, Derek Sidaway and Wren Thatcher. Stone and Brenda Baldock both took a single against Thatcher, who in turn won 11-8, 11-3, 17-15 against Stan Baldock. The remaining games were all won by the hosts who kept their noses ahead to win 8-2 – although there was a plethora of deuce sets and set point chances for the visitors.

NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Andy Beane and John Batchford hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Philip Stone (playing up) in a first division derby match. Stone had quite a night as he came back from 3-9 down to take the first set from Beane 15-13.

However Beane battled back from two sets down to win 15-13 in the fifth. Stone led Batchford 6-3 in the fifth, but only won one more point against a determined opponent and also had a match-point chance at 10-9 in the fourth against Vaughan, but again went down in five as the former League president won

11-7, 7-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-8. Price took his fourth set point to level proceedings at one set all against Batchford, but the NWSCA player came back from 3-5 down to take the decider 11-7. There was nothing to choose in the first set between Elliott and Vaughan, which the latter took 11-9. Elliott then seemed all at sea as Vaughan raced into a 5-0 lead in the second.

Elliott levelled at 8-8 before Vaughan’s class play took the next three points and sharp shooting saw him to a win in three, with some uncharacteristic errors coming from the NWSCB captain. Elliott had a very bad day at the office against Beane as he won just a handful of points, but did take Batchford to four sets. Beane and Batchford won the doubles against Elliott and Price in four to conclude their 10-0 match win.
