1940s Weekend 2019

Holt Highstreet was transformed into a bastion of blitz spirit last weekend. Shop windows became unbelievable displays of vintage memorabilia. Vintage busses ferried legions of enthusiastic tourists in and

out of the town. What an extraordinary assortment of entertainments this year. Songs reverberated the streets from singing groups and singers such as the Knightingales or Sarah Mai. For a bit of ‘swing a wing’ there was authentic big band music from the Skyliner Big Band and others. Groups such as the Fakenham Ukes draped Holt Highstreet in uplifting atmosphere. And speaking of music, if one fancied a bit of Jits and Jive, members of the public could put their feet out to dance to the tunes of another age. I saw incredible dancing, at the stations and on the high street to put Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to shame! (Alright…maybe not that good, but it was truly marvellous!) NAAFI at Weybourne provided a taste of the past with wartime rations and even that king of processed meat cuisine - the immortal SPAM sandwich. Modern microwave dinners can’t possibly compete with such authentic excellence. And what an incredible range of costumes and characters - austere nurses, dames with stunning victory rolls, and many a dungareed woman ordnance worker to make Rosie the Riveter proud. Among the men we had Seasoned Generals and Green Recruits, Scots Guard and Home Guard, Navy and Army, and possibly even a gangster and a jerry or two. For those whom are enthusiastic of Vintage Vehicles, there were countless to be seen and enjoyed. Trucks, and Tanks, and Motorbikes, and even a fighter plane at Holt Station. What were once mean, green, killing machines are now peacefully retired (or reconstructed) as

exemplary works of engineering from their time. We offer thanks to the Military Vehicle Trust and others for providing so many fantabulous vehicles, including the vintage buses that ferried thousands to and from Holt and Sheringham. When the North Norfolk Railway first organised the event all those years ago, who could have predicted the mammoth gathering it would become? Now the thing has grown bigger and bigger. Indeed, demand was so high on at Holt Station, on the Saturday in particular, that many were unfortunately forced to wait for a second train to Weybourne and Sheringham! Chief Organiser Angela Rudd at the North Norfolk Railway wishes to thank all local businesses and visitors that made the Weekend such a great success. County Councillor News

from County Councillor Dr Marie Strong Wells Division (Glaven, Priory and Walsingham Wards) marie.strong@norfolk.gov.uk; 07920 286 597

Parking on pavements: Much of this division has few if any pavements but I have never seen so many cars parked on our pavements as this summer. Nor is it simply parking two wheels on a broad pavement which is the cause for concern, rather it is parking in such a way that pedestrians with or without wheelchairs or children’s buggies cannot get past. I am very concerned to see elderly and infirm people struggling to walk on the road, tarmacked or not. It is of slight comfort to learn that this is endemic county wide, as a result of which the new chair of the LGA (Local Government Association) has supported the Government’s Commons Transport Committee’s call to ban parking on all pavements. Presently it is only London where such a ban exists. It may seem strange, but it is the police rather than traffic wardens who have ‘guardianship’ of pavements and they have the power to act when, for example, there is no space for a wheelchair to get past or residents cannot access/exit their property. In such cases a call to the police on 101 is advised, asking for a reference number. Child Car Seats: People have been expressing concern regarding the safety of their child car seats. If you have any concerns you can pose questions to NCC officers at: roadsafety@norfolk.gov.uk. Scams: Reports continue as to ‘cold callers’ offering to carry out repair work on people’s homes. Unless you have a personal recommendation it is far safer to check out NCC’s Trusted Trader www.norfolk.gov.uk/trustedtrader. Loan Sharks: Illegal money lenders typically charge sky-high interest rates, rely on extortion and plunge people into debt. It is worrying to discover family members – be they young or old – have become involved with loan sharks. If you need advice go to NCC’s Trading Standards - https://www.norfolk.gov.uk/business/trading-standards/ consumer-advice/loan-sharks

New E Service from your local library: A new service giving library members access to digital copies of major UK and worldwide magazines and newspapers is now available and completely free. PressReader provides access to full digital editions covering a broad range of subjects from travel and food, to politics and fashion – in your own language or translated into another. It also has the facility to enlarge. Whatever your reading need ask at your local library or check out www.norfolk.gov.uk/ebooks Norfolk Minerals and Waste Local Plan - Preferred Options Consultation from 18 September to 30 October. The Minerals and Waste Local Plan contains policies used to determine planning applications for minerals developments and waste management facilities in Norfolk up to 2036. Details of proposed sites, site assessments and policies are in the Preferred Options document - www.norfolk.gov.uk/nmwdf - (seek advice at your local library as to accessing the information). News from The Holt Community Centre

What a weekend! We had an exceptional time at the Holt 1940s Event on 14th and 15th September, running our ‘Taste of the Forties’ catering stall in the High St and manning the car parks. A HUGE thank you to all our hardworking and amazing volunteers who absolutely worked their socks off in the run up to it and over the 2 days, helping us to raise record amounts for the 1940s collections. What an amazing atmosphere there was in the town, with superb entertainment, lots of people in 1940s dress, vintage vehicles and stalls, a pigeon race, Children’s Street Party and more – I think it’s not an overstatement to say that we collectively put Holt firmly on the map yet again! The Community Centre is the main recipient of the collections this year, and we are so thrilled to be chosen. It will be a very timely donation for us, as we are still only partway through updating and redecorating the Centre. We have some exciting developments about to happen too, as we rebrand the Centre to become Holt Venue, Community and Arts Centre. The Committee thought it important to demonstrate the new Arts direction that we have by rebranding and giving us a bright and exciting new identity in the town. We are extremely grateful to Gavin Smith of the NOVA Group for offering to design our new logo for us, which we will unveil at our official launch during the NOVA Art Exhibition Private View on 4th October at 6.30pm. NOVA are bringing an exciting art exhibition to the Centre from 30th Sept to 24th October, and will be the first group to exhibit with us – our thanks to them for participating in our exciting new direction! The exhibition and Private View are free and open to all, so please do come and see their wonderful work. We will also be opening the new ArtSpaces Art Studios in the Centre that evening, so for us it will be a very significant night. Members of the NOVA art group are running some fabulous Art Workshops during this exhibition at the Centre, including glass art, guided sketching and collage, and a workshop for children, all of which are very affordable, accessible and enjoyable. Places are limited so get booked in early to avoid disappointment. We hope that these will be the first of many such workshops to be offered at your new Art Venue! On the subject of art, a massive THANK YOU to Michael and Adrian Hill of Picturecraft in Holt, who have just very generously donated display stands, cabinets and other furniture to the centre, to help us with our new arts direction – we are so grateful for your support and kindness. I have been continually amazed and impressed by the astonishing generosity and support of the traders and people of our town; the way in which they all support community projects, charities and individuals is something to be proud of, and very special. Watch out for our next DJ French Kriss Night on 27th Sept where you can dance the night away, Bingo on 9th October and the Holt Town Fair on 12th October – a chance to find out what’s on in all the fantastic groups, organisations, charities and venues in our town, meet the people behind them and get involved if you want – there’s something Dorindathere Glover_Layout 1 17/09/2019 17:06 Page 1 for everyone! Thank You

Dear Jo, Thank you so much for publishing an article prior to the Gresham Craft Fair and Classic Car Show on July 20th. Despite daunting weather forecasts, we had a mostly dry if somewhat windy day and many visitors enjoyed what was on offer, so much so that a total of £2355.00 was raised towards the urgent repairs needed on All Saints Church in Gresham. Through your columns, I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all craft stall holders who brought a wonderful range of quality goods for customers to enjoy; to our teams of volunteers who worked tirelessly and cheerfully, sometimes in difficult conditions, to produce hotdogs, strawberry teas, sort out signage, parking and so on; to the Broadland Ukes whose performances were enthusiastically applauded, with many singing along and finally to the classic car owners who brought their marvellous vehicles despite the weather. We are also grateful to all those businesses and individuals who contributed raffle prizes, and those villagers who made the produce for our “Made in Gresham” stall. All in all, it was a monumental effort to create such an enjoyable event, and it was really pleasing to be able to add such a large sum to our funds. Our series of Autumn evening fundraising Concerts begin on September 28th, in our church, when Tale Dolce Musica, a Baroque group of instrumentalists led by a superb soprano, perform a varied programme. Tickets £10.00 from Julia on 01263 577794, or Helen 01263 577849. Refreshments included. In October, on 26th, The Sheringham Shantymen will perform a concert of songs linked with the sea. Again, tickets will be £10.00 including refreshments. Numbers strictly limited, so get your tickets early. On November 9th, Songs of Courage and Good Cheer will be performed by a local choir. This concert is free, but donations would be welcome. Just come along to the church for a 7.30pm start. Again, there will be refreshments. We are always looking for new ideas and for more volunteers for fundraising. Our supporters enjoy a monthly newsletter and if anyone would like to be included on that mailing list, please contact me by email: juliadrury@hotmail.co.uk. Thank you Julia Drury, Chair, The Friends of All Saints Gresham.

Rock the Quiz

Dear Jo, The Rock Bodham/Red Hart Inn harvest themed quiz was a great success: over 45 keen quizzers were in attendance. With questions ranging from: hymns to hip hop; Millls and Boon to Mills or Boon, there was something for everyone. All profits from these events go toward the Rock Bodham good causes and the organisers would like to thank people for their generosity. The next event is a Hallowe'en quiz to be held on Friday 25th October, 8:00 pm at the Red Hart. So, if you know your ghosts from your ghouls and your Banshee form your Bain Marie then come and give it a go. Many thanks John-Paul Ringer, Rock Bodham team.

Cannabis Debate

Dear Jo, Stephen Gillam wants cannabis outlets - state-controlled for potency, advertising and consumer age. Taxation added, this would not eliminate criminals who provide lower prices, easier availability and stronger effects; Canada confirms this. Some pro-cannabis advocates therefore would like to recruit dealers and ex-convicts to facilitate their trade (Henry McDonald, Guardian, 6 September). Mr Gillam says the World Health Organisation "agrees" with "decriminalising non-medical use" of "cannabis, cocaine, and heroin". It issued a Joint UN Statement regarding "discrimination" over "age, sex, race, gender identity, nationality, asylum or migration status, health vulnerability, criminal record, etc" - which supposedly required the "review or repeal" of national laws against drug usage, but also against HIV

transmission, prostitution and other sexual behaviours!! This was blatant political ideology rather than data-based medical concern. More relevant is the subsequent UN World Drug Report 2018. However, decriminalisation of private use is not the same as legalisation of public mass-marketing. Illegal migrant trafficking is woven into transnational crime, including drug gangs, foreign cultures, and lines to overseas supply centers (cf. EMCCDA Reports 2019, 2016; UNODOC World Drug Report 2019). As for "commercial propaganda", businessmen obviously expect massive profits from an almost literally "captive" global market; (see e.g. Robert Verkaik, i News, 23 February 2018; Robert Morgan, Soros the Drug Lord [2016]; Rob Davies, Guardian, 2 March & 24 June 2019 online). Does Mr Gillam wish to legalise other "recreational substances" aka addictive brain-poisons, such as cocaine and heroin? David Ashton

Appeal for Drivers

Dear Jo, The Holt Area Caring Society, which transports people to medical appointments, is looking for new volunteer drivers. The car service is vital for many people living in our rural area and is very much appreciated by our users. For more information, please ring our co-ordinators, Liz and Rachel, on 01263 711243. You will be most welcome! Many thanks, Peta Benson (chairperson)

The World We Live In

Dear Jo, Not here, the silence, in this twittering world. As the BBC never tires of announcing, we are entering unchartered waters. Collectively changing our minds. And there are disturbing consequences. Social media is a strange world in which perhaps a majority now lives. People spend hours in silos, saying whatever comes into their heads, encouraged by a few likes but unconstrained by the norms which have governed most people’s behaviour until recently. The sophistry that free speech is a licence to abuse with impunity, rant without consequences, spew venomous nonsense, publish to the world delusions, spite and misinformation without challenge or any obligation to correct the record, threaten the fabric of what we’ve understood as civilised behaviour. There are no rules. The more deluded and shocking one’s posts, the more popular they are likely to be. For the first time we are being encouraged to be ever more bizarre and outrageous. Hitler and Billy Graham would have far more followers than Montaigne and Kant. Top the charts. Facebook, Twitter, Populism, the BBC’s frantic pursuit of ratings. Seeing ratings as proof of quality. We are in a new world where the number of likes is far more important than any kind of integrity, quality or moral purpose. The more outrageous, the more popular. The BBC is a weathervane. What would Lord Reith make of Peaky Blinders, Strictly Come Dancing, the Apprentice? The headlong pursuit of popularity. How long can it be before the BBC broadcasts, live, a public flogging, a crucifixion? Imagine the hits for real time coverage of Auschwitz Today. Jeff Wood

40s Weekend

Dear Jo The 40s weekend in Holt this year was a very happy and friendly occasion. I hope that next year's will be the same and would like to suggest the addition of a volunteer run Tea Tent for veterans of the war years. There are still many people who come to the weekend who lived through and remember the 40s and so a chance to meet others, to exchange memories and stories, would be an interesting and beneficial event to add to the commemoration. Yours sincerely Daphne Heaton

A Lost World - Memories of Briston and Melton Constable

The Characters of Commerce. Part 1 by Leslie Kinsley It is only when I look at an old map or book these days, that it makes me remember what a large and busy place Melton Constable was. I have said that my parents never left the area, but of course they had no need as everything was here. Melton was the Crewe of Norfolk where all the trains came on their way into the county. In addition, they made engines up at the huge workshops and carriages. I remember ‘Snigger’ Miller who worked on these. He was a real grumpy old man. In his spare time he was the Bandmaster for our Home guard band. He played the cornet and I was on the kettle drum. He would get on to us when we made a mistake. We went round playing at the local churches. Corpusty would give us a tea of sandwiches as a thank you. There was a turntable which was hand driven at first but used steam later. All day on a Saturday in the summer, trains arrived from the Midlands bringing holiday makers to places like Great Yarmouth or taking them home. Melton had a Pilot engine which pushed the heavily laden train up to the highest point at Pig’s Grave and on to Thursford, before returning with the next engine. Children cycled to the station from the villages around. They then caught the train to Fakenham for secondary school. It wasn’t just people; I remember a chap from Briston called Perry would bring rabbits, game and poultry to send to the London Market. He lived on gin and had a short temper because of it. My first Boss used the station to get his cattle from the sales. Josh English was in charge of them and I remember him stamping about in a pair of clogs as he brought them down to The Meadow for the night. You could hear him from miles away. He was always covered in cow muck. I have already told you about the sugar beet.

Ev ery one welc ome to join us

The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month. St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWS The Parish of Holt with High Kelling

FROM THE CURATE

Rector: Fr. Howard Stoker SSC, The Rectory, Church Street, Holt NR25 6BB Tel: 01263 712048 email:holtrectory@tiscali.co.uk Assistant Curate: Fr. Stephen Graham Tel. 01263 649985, E: revdstephengraham@gmail.com Parish Office Tel: 01263 713479 E: standrewsholt@btinternet.com website at www.holtchurch.org

Dear Friends, It was good to see so many visitors and locals enjoying the weather and the atmosphere in town during the 1940s weekend. The event was a good reminder to retain a sense of fun and lightheartedness even in difficult circumstances. Perhaps we need a good dose of that celebrated optimism and resilience to see us through our current difficulties as a nation! At the parish church we remembered the huge role that faith played in national and local life during WW2 when as a people we turned to God as never before. Facing overwhelming odds with hundreds of thousands of British and allied troops surrounded on the beaches of Dunkirk, King George VI called the first wartime National Day of Prayer on Sunday 26th May, 1940. Services were held in Cathedrals and Parish Churches around the country. His Majesty the King and the Prime Minister joined the congregation in Westminster Abbey to pray for deliverance and for peace. The ‘Miracle of Dunkirk’ followed and Sunday 9th June was officially appointed as a Day of National Thanksgiving. There were six more national days of prayer during the course of the war and after each one God responded with His blessing and protection. The Bishop of Chelmsford at the time wrote, ‘If ever a great nation was on the point of supreme and final disaster, and yet was saved and reinstated it was ourselves... it does not require an exceptionally religious mind to detect in all this the Hand of God.’ Although today we do not find ourselves in so grave a situation, our current political crisis and social problems might be a prompt not only to maintain optimism and joie de vivre, but also to turn, like our forbears in the 1940s, to ask for divine help for our country. ‘If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face... then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.’ (2 Chronicles 7.14)

The Bowen Therapy – Health care with a difference

Cornelis van der Does BTAA BAUK ITEC(A&P) The Bowen Therapy is a drug-free, non-invasive, hands-on therapy which can be administered through light clothing, with the client sitting, lying or standing. Using only fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body. One of the most profound effects Bowen can have is in shifting the Autonomic Nervous System – which controls over 80% of bodily functions – from sympathetic (perceived threat response) to parasympathetic (rest, digest, recover) dominance, releasing stress at a very deep level. This subtle but dynamic process allows the body to re-align, address imbalances in functions and chemical composition and, as far as possible, restore homeostasis (physiological equilibrium) within the body. This could explain why even a small number of Bowen treatments frequently reactivate the recovery process, when healing from trauma, sickness, injury or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau. Short-term (acute) injury is usually resolved in three to five sessions, while long-standing (chronic) conditions may require longer. In addition to addressing muscular-skeletal problems such as back, neck, shoulder and knee pain, whiplash, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, carpel tunnel syndrome and sports injuries, Bowen can also help with conditions such as asthma, hay fever, eczema, migraine, IBS, high blood pressure, dystonia, depression, anxiety, addiction, stress, hormonal imbalance, MS, ME and fibromyalgia. For further information or to book an appointment please call reception on 01263 711712 or 07944 099135. Email bowenclinicnorfolk@gmail.com. Clinics also at Aldborough Surgery, Cromer, Sheringham and Norwich with home visits by arrangement. He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything. - Arabian proverb

FRED WHEELER SURVIVOR OF 60 BOMBING MISSIONS IN WORLD WAR II

Holt resident Fred Wheeler has died three months after his 100th birthday. As a wireless operator and air gunner he flew 60 bombing missions in Wellingtons and Halifaxes over Germany between 1941 and 1944 and earned himself a commission and a Distinguished Flying Medal “for valour, courage and devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy”. A mild and modest man, Fred spoke little about his wartime experiences until late in life describing one tense incident when his damaged Wellington was forced to make a crash landing after losing all navigational control and running out of fuel in the blackest of nights. Coming to rest in a ploughed field, the crew awaited the arrival of a heavy vehicle not knowing even which country they were in. They were relieved to hear a voice calling, “ Are you all right, chaps?” Fred commented that he and his comrades did not, at the time, consider the plight of civilians below them. Later, however, when the war was over, he flew on ‘Cooks Tours’ showing ground crew what they had helped to achieve. “It was terrible,” he observed, “ to see the awful damage to the cities; especially I remember Cologne, completely destroyed except for the cathedral which looked unscathed.” Having flown on several 1,000 bomber raids, Fred was not a fan of their

WEYBOURNE WI LEARN ABOUT LIFE IN UGANDA

On Wednesday, 4th September, members of Weybourne WI enjoyed a fascinating talk and slide show given by Jo and Ian Mutton. They are involved with Reed People, a charitable trust affiliated to the Lighthouse Church in Sheringham, which helps people from the village of Lumpewe in Uganda. Jo and Ian have been visiting Uganda on a regular basis for the past 10 years, accompanied by numerous volunteers with a variety of skills and together they have helped the local people by providing training and assistance with many projects. The local school has particularly benefited from their visits with teacher training, help to maintain the building, construction of desks, benches and book cases, plus provision of uniform and football kit. A rainwater collection and filtration unit has been built in the village and local women have been taught to knit and crochet. ‘Sewathons’ at the Lighthouse Church have helped to create a variety of garments, knitted toys and other items, which are all transported in suitcases to Uganda. Volunteers fund themselves to go on the visits and any donations made to the charity go directly towards the various projects in Lumpewe. The next trip is planned for 17th October, when a party of eight volunteers hope to continue with the work that has been carried out so far. A vote of thanks was given by Pat King. We all agreed that Jo and Ian were to be commended for their dedication.

architect, “Bomber” Harris . However his time spent off operations could be just as dangerous. “We trained ‘sprog’ wireless operators, flying with ‘sprog’ pilots which was often scary!” In a reference to the appalling casualty rate amongst air crew during the war, Fred’s gift for understatement is graphic : “Why I survived and 55,570 did not, I don’t know. I was lucky, I suppose.” After taking a postal course while still in the RAF, Fred became an electrical surveyor “an interesting and healthy employment” and for the next 32 years “proceeded to cover the whole of East Anglia and the Isle of White with electricity poles!” At the age of 50 Fred took up singing and was much in demand as a tenor and a popular member of several choral societies. His one brush with the law occurred when he was fined for speeding. He was 99 at the time. His wife of 55 years, Gwen, died in 1999 and then Fred met Eileen with whom he spent ten very happy years. His son, David, visited often from the United States and he had two grandsons.

Salmon and broad bean chowder

This summer has been exceptional for fruit and vegetables from the Grove gardens, and as always John’s beans are running riot.

We usually spend hours in exhaustive bean planning meetings to try to figure out the best way to get them onto the menu, and this summer we have been using them in a wonderful cockle chowder with our superb pan-fried halibut.

Do come in and see us and try our halibut (and any of the other dishes we have!) from 6 – 9.30pm every evening at the Grove 01263 512412

This salmon and bean chowder is probably a little more simple and quicker to make; however any nice thick chowder makes an excellent accompaniment to fish dishes in general.

Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard

Norfolk dialect in American English.

I have heard it said that there were more people from Norfolk than of any other single county on the Mayower when it took the pilgrim fathers to America in 1620. Be that as it may, it is always pleasing to hear in the speech of those from Massachusetts, where our forebears ďŹ rst settled, a distinct relic of the Norfolk accent in their rhetoric. It is in the vowel sound 'a' where this occurs. To cobble a sentence together, one might hear: "My faather paaked his caa outside his apaatment." It is remarkable because it is more distinct than it is in the parent accent of Norfolk today, where, while still apparent, it has become diminished. Other Norfolk pronunciations are widely used in American English. "opportunity" is usually given as "opportoonity", "attitude" as "attitood", "Tuesday" as "Toosday" and "prostitute" as "prostitoot." Some American expressions of past tenses savour of old Norfolk, too. An American will always say: "He 'pled' guilty" rather than 'pleaded'. he 4XDOLÂżHG )RRW +HDOWK 3URIHVVLRQDO will often (though not invariably) say 'drug' as the past tense of 'drag'. George W. Bush, for example, said he was "...not going to have his (MCFHP, MAFHP) soldiers drug before a court...." I have heard that great jurist and entertainer, Judge Judy, say "you were 'skun' (i.e. 'skinned' in the sense 9LVLWLQJ 3UDFWLFH of cheated) and I have heard her say: "He dove (rhyming with rove and Telephone: (01362) 680176 meaning dived) into the water." Mobile 07886 692285 But while it is easy to cite pronunciations such as "oppotoonity" because Registered Member of The British Association of Foot Health Professionals I have heard them from American and Norfolk speech, it is far more diďŹƒcult to cope with the past tense expressions TO BE HELD ON THE CARNSER CAR PARK, because, while there is a distant BLAKENEYÂł FREE resonance from my own experience, I PARKING AT THE can't, now give speciďŹ cs from VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK recollection. Hedgehog Haven

Autumn’s Arrived!

Pictured are two hoglets who came into care on Bank Holiday Monday along with their mother and two other siblings as the nest was disturbed. A week on and their eyes are open and looking very cute! I have another mother who has given birth to four. On 30 August a large female who I am fairly sure is pregnant came in as she was found out during the day. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and should not be out in daylight - the exception is a busy mum taking a break from the nest but she will be moving quickly and out only for short spells. Even young ones who have left the nest should be sleeping during the day and coming out only at night seeking food and water. Find us on Facebook

BRISTON DAY CENTRE NEWS

We would like to start by saying some big ‘thank you’s. First of all, our freezer broke down and Graves the butchers came to our rescue and put our frozen food in their freezer. We ‘phoned Kings and Barnhams in Holt and within an hour they arrived with a brand-new freezer and installed it for us! How’s that for good service! Thank you to Brenda and Dave Taylor from High Kelling who served us a delicious lunch in their garden, Dave and Margaret Chambers from the Norfolk Larder invited us for a crab sandwich and on another day we had a return visit to ‘The Bell’ at Cawston for a superb meal. We have been entertained by the delightful Wherry Men with their lovely singing and good humour, David Parsons showed us a film of his cruise round the British Isles and Mick Leary had us dancing, laughing and singing when he played his Yamaha keyboard. Our Annual General Meeting is on Thursday the 3rd October at 2.30p.m. in the Centre at All Saint Close, Briston NR24 2LA. We would like to invite anyone who may be interested to come along and meet the Co-ordinators and Trustees. If you are retired or nearly-retired, and you think you could enjoy doing these sorts of things with our lovely band of ‘regulars’ then why not ‘phone Dorothy or Carol on a Monday or Thursday, on 01263 861120, to book a ‘taster’ session or just pop in and say ‘hello’ and find out more about us! We meet every Monday and Thursday at All Saints Community Centre. All Saints Close, Briston, from 9.30am - 2.30pm. After a talking sheepdog gets all the sheep in the pen, he reports back to the farmer: “All 40 accounted for. “But I only have 36 sheep, says the farmer. “I know, says the sheepdog. “But I rounded them up.

VETERAN’S FAMILY ENJOYS WELL-DESERVED BLAKENEY ROYAL BRITISH LEGION BREAK

Blakeney— September 11, 2019 — Blakeney Cley and District Royal British Legion launched its first activity break for Legion beneficiaries. Meet their first family: Ray, Tahlia, Lachlan and Sam Fleming - not forgetting Ringo the dog - from Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire. An inspirational veteran, his wife and two of their children enjoyed the first respite break organised by the branch. Ray Fleming is a veteran who suffers from PTSD, has a compression fracture in his spine and is currently battling cancer, his wife Sam suffers with MS. They have been in temporary accommodation for the last year and needed a much-deserved break. Blakeney Cley and District Royal British Legion hosted a welcome barbecue for the Flemings at their club base, The Harbour Room in Blakeney. Members of the branch and club attended to welcome the family and many members of the Blakeney community turned out to show their support. The Flemings then spent the rest of their four days in Norfolk visiting Holkham Hall and Amazona Zoo, taking a trip on the North Norfolk Railway from Holt to Sheringham, learnt crabbing at Blakeney Quay and they also learnt to sail together on a trip from Morston out to see the seals at Blakeney Point. Sam was overwhelmed at the difference the break made to her family, "Having all the activities we enjoyed in north Norfolk: Holkham Hall, the steam train, sailing, seal trips, zoo and crabbing was amazing, there's so much to do! George at Norfolk etc. was fantastic, he told us what white horses were". Tahlia said, "My best thing was going on the boat trip to see the seals and ducking under the water was fun!". Lachlan told us, "I loved sailing a boat and can't wait to go to the zoo!". Sam added, "For us to get away and relax was wonderful, being in a safe, nice community was great for the children - the kids were waking up with smiles on their faces for the first time in ages - this absolutely needs to be available to more families. I cannot tell you the difference it's made to our family over the three days". Ray agreed with Sam, adding, "I loved it, such a friendly welcome and a wonderful location, surrounded by beauty. So much to do and only a relatively short distance away for us. I enjoyed the seal trip and the tranquility of being on the water especially. It was great to see the kids learn lots about sailing and take them crabbing plus it was good to have time to relax as well as do the activities". About the break arranged by Blakeney Cley and District Royal British Legion, Sam said, "It's priceless what we have been given. People like us should be here all the time benefiting from what we have enjoyed, it was wonderful to have things planned for us, so I didn't have to organise things and I actually had time to rest." When asked what her favourite part of the break was, Sam said, "All of it. We had such a great time and made happy memories." As it organises the next break and looks forward to it being as successful as this one was, Blakeney, Cley and District Royal British Legion thanks and acknowledge the generosity of its delivery partners, Holkham Hall, Amazona Zoo, Norfolk etc. North Norfolk Railway and Blakeney Harbour Room. Blakeney, Cley and District Royal British Legion are spearheading a range of exciting new initiatives to provide breaks for veterans and their dependents and make a range of activities, including sailing, accessible to Royal British Legion beneficiaries using the unique, natural and therapeutic resources North Norfolk has to offer as well as facilitating veterans’ start-up and existing businesses. Pilates - An Exercise Programme for Life

Recent media reports have highlighted the importance of exercise to enhance mobility, flexibility and balance. This is particularly important as we grow older. Pilates is designed to improve your strength, flexibility and posture, which in turn will help with balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls. Located in the centre of Holt, the North Norfolk Pilates Studio offers regular Pilates classes taken on specialised, hand crafted Pilates equipment. Classes are either one to one or for a maximum of two people at a time and are tailored to individual physical needs and ability levels. Owner and Pilates Instructor Moira Morrissey, who has run the studio for over 15 years, says “My Pilates clients value the individual approach I take which allows me to focus on their specific needs. I have worked with people with chronic conditions but also recommend Pilates as a very effective exercise programme for all ages. I’ve been practising it myself now for more than 20 years.â€? If you would like to sample what Pilates can do for you, Moira is offering Holt Chronicle readers a special offer. If you buy a one to one class lasting one hour for ÂŁ35, you get another one FREE. This offer is only available until 30th November 2019. To book your class today, call 01263 712305 or email enquiries@northnorfolkpilates.com North Norfolk Pilates Studio, Rear of 7 Fish Hill, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 6BD

269. Caspar Bates, The Problemist, Sept. 2016

268. White to play and win

269. White to play and draw

Solution to No. 268: 1. Bh6+ Kxh6 (1… Kh8 objectively better, not fighting but confining material loss to just the exchange after 2. Bxf8) 2. Qh3+ Kg7 3. Rxg6+ and 4. Qxd7 with Q and 2Ps for R and B, and Black’s position in ruins. This is the last position in the current competition; the winner will be announced next time. A new mini-competition begins with No. 269, the first of six composed endgame studies, solving which is actually a very effective way of honing one’s calculation skills by calculating short sequences: this technique is used in the Russian school of chess and has been approved by top players like Magnus Carlsen. Here, though the white B apparently cannot control both black Ps, a pendulum draw is reached after 5 moves. Difficulty 2.

Holt and District Probus Club

The Feathers in Holt hosted the September meeting of Holt and District Probus Club. The 3-course meal having been enjoyed, there was a bit of re-arrangement of furniture to make room for the speaker. At short notice, Steve Dyer introduced members to the noble sport of fencing. Steve has been a tutor/coach for some years and started by showing the equipment. Most obvious are the 3 types of weapons used – foil, épée and sabre which may often have electrical contacts to record scoring ‘hits’. Also important are the padded protective clothing worn, the metal foil mask and special gloves. Assisted by Andrew Pearcey, Steve then demonstrated many of the techniques and movements in fencing - “parry” and “lunge” and others. The contest is in (usually) 3, 3-minute bouts with a 1 minute rest in between bouts. Often a match lasts until a given number of ‘hits’ have been scored – perhaps 5 or 15. The uninitiated do not realise what an energetic sport fencing can be. A vote of thanks was proposed by Bob Ward followed by generous applause from the members! Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782. Refer also to https://holtprobusclub.wordpress.com/

Sam’s Skydive to Success for Norfolk Mental Health

This July I decided to raise money for MIND - Norfolk & Waveney (1118449) as this was a charity close to my heart. We all know somebody who has been affected by mental health issues in some form or another. These invisible illnesses are often overlooked, especially in our rural communities and I decided I’d endeavour to do my part to make a change of some kind locally. I first set out to do a sponsored tandem skydive to raise money with a target of £250. But I quickly thought maybe I’d hold a charity quiz night in my local village hall to try and raise some more money. But after raising over £300 in 2 days on my online fundraiser I decided to kick it up a notch. With great prizes coming in from so many local companies both big and small; I decided I needed to do something bigger. After holding the quiz night I then put on a charity raffle at the Annual Party on The Pastures in Blakeney. After this I had raised just over £1,200 and sponsorship for my skydive began to pour in. The day of the skydive in Beccles was the 24th of August and it was the most breathtakingly incredible experience I’ve ever had the pleasure to take on and with the help of my charismatic grandma Christine Procter we managed to raise £2596.60 in the space of 6 weeks which is absolutely mind-blowing! I’ve been informed that the money raised is going towards a new suicide prevention and aftercare system that is about to begin operation in North Norfolk; aimed at helping those in isolated communities who are in need of support. But also, sadly, helping those who have been left behind after the suicide of a loved one. You’ve all been extremely generous and me and the team at MIND - Norfolk & Waveney are so thankful for your contributions. Your support really is what keeps charities such as MIND going; without you none of their work would be possible! Sam Bayfield

EAAA Trek 24

“I have entered us into a charity sponsored walk” my wife said. Ok sounds good what do we have to do and who for I replied, “It’s for the East Anglian Air Ambulance and it’s called TREK 24 and we are walking the 24-mile route.” And so it began. The fund raising, the training. We received our fundraising packs from the charity with everything we needed to get going including sponsor forms, stickers etc. We went to Orest at the Kings Head Holt and asked if we could have a quiz, He agreed and got 10 teams for the night with quiz master Olli at the helm. We badgered local businesses for raffle prizes, and they gave generously including Orest himself who provided not only the snacks but two wonderful prizes, a very successful night Our training was going well, and we received our TREK 24 t-shirts from the charity. And the day was looming. We decided to have a second quiz night and again Orest and his team did us proud with another great night was had with another raffle and again Olli as quiz master. The Trek was on sept 8th starting at Roman camp taking the coastal path to Holkham Hall. No amount of training prepared us for the 4.5 miles of pebbles we had to traverse. The East Anglian air ambulance team did a fantastic job supporting all the Trekkers with food and drink stops along the way with a hot meal and glass of wine at the finish. Debbie & I raised a total of £1456.00, which with Martins sponsors and other promises should get near £2000.00 We would like to thank Martin Cain who joined us for the Trek and all the local businesses who helped with raffle prizes including The Kings Head Holt, Benbows, Rumours Boutique, Baby o, Starlings, Alberts Fish Bar, The Cley Swallows, Posh Pets, Debonair, Budgens, Emma’s Boutique, Nina’s, Adnams, The Black Apollo, The Red Hart, Chubby Seal, Woofers & Barkers, Holt Fish Bar, Tonsorial Artist ,The Dun Cow The Robin Hood, The Osokozi Gallery, Kings and Barnhams, Cool Cuts, Calabrese Wine Bar. Eric’s Fish & Chips, P&S Butchers, Dream Nails of Holt. Thank you to all who helped and supported us. Philip & Debbie Ince

HIGH KELLING GARDEN CLUB

At our first meeting of this season on 9th September, our programmed speaker couldn’t come so Kathy Gray kindly stepped in to talk about the diversity of British gardens. At Borde Hill in West Sussex, the 200-acre garden includes parkland planted with specimen trees, woodland and herbaceous gardens. The Clarke family, who bought the estate in 1893, were patrons of some of the greatest plant hunters so their garden includes many exotic plants, including a number of “champion” trees (the tallest or widest recorded). Next we visited the Winter Garden at Cambridge Botanical gardens. Plants were selected for their interesting textured bark or colourful stems, or winter flowers with exquisite scent. Trees and shrubs were underplanted with early bulbs, hellebores and bergenias. The gardens at Wollerton Old Hall in Shropshire have been developed since 1983. Tall hedges divide the space into a grid of rooms, each planted to create a different mood. Yew pyramids, box balls and large pots add to the formality of some areas, whereas others are softly planted. Our last stop was Logan Botanical Gardens on the Galloway peninsular in Scotland. Here the Gulf Stream and a wide shelter belt protecting against salty winds allow southern hemisphere plants such as tree ferns to flourish. Kathy also talked briefly about Plant Heritage, a society devoted to the conservation of garden plants. The growth of garden centres since the 1970s, which sell a narrow range of popular, easy to produce and grow plants, has fuelled the decline of many old species and varieties. Members grow national collections of a particular plant so different bloodlines are preserved for future breeding and medical use.

Holt & District Flower Club

'Bloomin Marvellous' was the title of Brenda Tubb's demonstration at our September meeting and her flowers certainly were marvellous. The audience's favourite was the beautiful and unusual Miss Piggy rose. Brenda also entertained us with amusing stories featuring her husband, John, who swears by magnets to cure his aches and pains. Apparently, he uses little corsage magnets with a corn plaster to stick them on. The member’s competition for September was a foliage arrangement 'Hedgerow Delight' and the People's Choice winner was Diane Randell. Next month we will be having a demonstration by Julia Knights. Why not come and join us on Monday, 7th October. 7.00 for 7.30pm at the Community Centre, Holt. Visitors just £6.50. We also hold monthly workshops at the Copeman Centre, Briston for those who want to learn flower arranging. To see details of our programme for the rest of the year please visit our website www.holtflowerclub.co.uk You can find us on Facebook at Holt & District Flower Club or telephone Amanda Seales 01263 861725.

Details to follow. Coordinated Sea Watch 12th October 2019 07:30 - 10:30am This will be the fifth Coordinated Seawatch organised by the NENBC, and the fourth held in October. The objects of this survey are: 1. To introduce NENBC members to the joys of seawatching. 2. To help NENBC members improve their skill at identifying birds in flight at sea. 3. To map the likely route of wildfowl, seabirds and waders as they fly around the coast. 4. To estimate the speed of flight of some of the species recorded. 5. To assess the effect of weather conditions and tide on the rate and timing of passage. Locations and leads are listed below. There is no need to book but if you want to let the leads know to expect you, please drop them a note. To get the most out of the event, we’d advise coming along for the whole 3 hours but ‘part timers’ will always be welcome at any point! You may want to bring the following with you: • A folding chair each, rather than standing for 3+ hours! • If you have a telescope and tripod do bring them along, as well as your bins. • A flask of hot drink and a snack may be a good idea. • Waterproof and warm clothing if the weather looks inclement. • Maybe an ID book. We will be recording the number and species of all the birds we see and the direction they are flying for each 10-minute period throughout the 3-hour time frame. DETAILS OF THE SITES WILL BE POSTED NEARER THE TIME. For more information please contact Lin Pateman 01263 587262.

News from Heritage House

Our big excitement this summer was the official unveiling of our new minibus livery. Thanks to Norfolk Superhero, the Wells League of Friends and two other charitable trusts we’ve been able to purchase two larger minibuses and have all three frontline vehicles ‘wrapped’ with colourful images that give a clear impression of who we are and what we do. You may see one of them drive past. And there's more excitement to come. Following on from the success of ‘An Evening with Jane David Bentinck Austen’ last May, our Patron, Lady Leicester, and Chair of Trustees, Nicky Milner, have organised another special event in the Marble Hall at Holkham in aid of Heritage House. It’s on Saturday, October the 12th at 6.45pm and it’s ‘An Evening with Tim Bentinck’, also known as David Archer and, in real life, the 12th Earl of Portland. It will be a real treat for anyone who’s an Archers fan or fancies themselves as a temporary member of the Ambridge community because Tim has written a short Archer’s script that will be auctioned off on the evening and there will be an opportunity for people to bid to perform it with him that evening. Tickets costing £40 are available via the Holkham website and include a glass of champagne and canapés. Tim will also be selling and signing copies of his book, ‘Being David Archer: And Other Unusual Ways of Earning a Living’, and Monica Vinader is kindly donating some of her jewellery to the raffle. It promises to be an evening to remember.

News from Holt Bell Tower

Three years ago, almost to the day, I was holding a party in my house to celebrate my ?? Birthday. Six months earlier, we had been joined by two bell ringers, who had moved to Sheringham from Hertfordshire and decided to join the Holt band. We couldn’t believe our luck, two readymade ringers who fitted in as if they had always been part of our band. With the backing of all of us I presented Sue with the Keys of the Door! And she took over from me as Tower Captain, with the excellent support of Guy, her husband. It was the best decision I ever made. We now have a thriving band of 16 ringers, including learners. Before, we were only about 6 or 7 if we were lucky. We struggled to ring the most basic things. Now we can always ring all 8 bells for Sundays and the standard has improved beyond recognition. We ring all sorts of interesting methods and there is unbounded enthusiasm. Just a word of explanation! A method is the equivalent of a piece of music. It has a name – Stedman, Plain bob, Grandsire and has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Every piece starts and ends with the bells ringing down the scale several times to allow the ringers to settle into a good rhythm. Once started, just like any performance, it carries on until it has finished. Occasionally someone tries to get into the Ringing Chamber while the bells are ringing. This is actually quite a dangerous thing to do and could cause an accident as the ropes are going up and down and there is a person ringing while standing on the top step of the stairs as this is where the rope happens to fall naturally. We enjoy our ringing, especially when ringing to celebrate a couple getting married or some other happy event. I could say that we enjoy ringing in times of sorrow, but that is subtly different. “We raise the bells for ringing upon the day of days, We ring in joyous gladness when man and wife are wed and ring in muffled sadness for loved one laid to rest.” Lines from the Ringers Hymn Theo Crowder

HOLT RIDGE MORRIS SEEKING NEW MEMBERS

Local Morris side Holt Ridge have spent a busy summer dancing at various locations throughout the county. The season began when we danced at dawn on 1st May at Roman Camp, which has now become an annual tradition. We spent a very busy May bank holiday weekend dancing at different locations for three consecutive days including Cromer Pier, The Stalham Fringe Festival and the Poppy Line platforms. The Potty festival in July was another highlight of our year. In addition we have danced at numerous summer fetes and local pubs. Our two brief appearances on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow were of special note this year too. When we were featured dancing at Cromer – not as exhibits! Now September has arrived, it is time to start our regular Monday evening practice sessions again. These are generally held at Marsham village hall. This is an excellent time for new members to join the side and learn to dance during the winter months. It’s the opportunity to take up a new hobby, keep fit and make new friends into the bargain! If you are interested in learning to Morris dance, please give Brian Antuar a call on 01263 715762 for further information, or find us on Facebook – Holt Ridge Morris. We will look forward to seeing you!

My best friend called me yesterday and told me an evil wizard turned him into a tiny harp. So I went over to his house and it turns out he is just a big lyre.
