“The consultation events have been set up to encourage as many people as possible to have their say and an opportunity to make comments and suggestions that the Council can consider before consulting again ahead of the final submission for independent examination in late 2019.”

New Local Plan reaches first phase of public consultation A public consultation on a new Local Plan (Part 1) for North Norfolk will begin on Tuesday 7 May and run until Wednesday 19 June, 5pm.

Residents, businesses and organisations are being invited to consider the content of the First Draft Local Plan (Part 1) and supporting documents and to let the Council know if changes are considered to be necessary.

The purpose of the Local Plan is to provide clear detail on where new homes, jobs and infrastructure will be created in order to meet housing, employment and other needs of the area, while protecting and enhancing our unique natural and built environment. This includes addressing specific challenges such as accommodating a growing and aging population, providing affordable housing, and managing the potential impacts of climate change.

As part of the consultation, the Council will also publish details of the Alternative Options that have been considered and the Sustainability Appraisal, together with the supporting documents and evidence that has informed the preparation of the draft document.

The Council is also seeking to identify available sites in a number of village locations as part of a ‘Call for Sites’. Proposals for sites of up to 1 hectare are being invited in order to provide development opportunities in 22 specific village locations[1] across the district which would benefit from small-scale housing growth.

A consultation is also being held on three Supplementary Planning Documents at the same time. The overall purpose of the documents is to provide detailed guidance to applicants, to support relevant Local Plan policies, and to assist in the determination of planning applications and appeals.

Cancer Support and Information Available

Now at Cromer Hospital Norfolk and Waveney cancer charity, Big C, has launched a new service at Cromer Hospital to provide greater cancer support for North Norfolk residents.

The weekly drop-in sessions provide those affected by cancer with the chance to talk in confidence with an expert from Big C. A wide range of advice, information and signposting is available, including how to access financial and welfare support or counselling services.

Complementary therapies can also be booked to take place at Big C’s Support and Information Centre in Kings Lynn.

The sessions started last week and will take place every Wednesday from 9.30am to 3pm in the atrium on the ground floor.

Sam Glee, acting director of operations at Big C, said, “We have been working on providing cancer support and information sessions at Cromer Hospital for a while and we are pleased that those in North Norfolk affected by cancer can now access the support that they need closer to home.”

Dear Residents of Holt County Division We read all the time in the papers and hear on the news so many sad reports of man’s inhumanity to man, that I wanted to report this time on the wonderful community spirit I see in our area.

Many of you will have read in the local papers about the very sad house fire that some local residents suffered on Easter Sunday. You will perhaps also have heard about the tremendous work of the firefighters to try and save the property; and one officer who went to extra lengths to save the family cat. What you may not have heard about, is the incredible local community who have rallied around afterwards with amongst other things offers of accommodation, clothing, and most importantly moral support.

People always seem surprised by this, but it is one of the nicest parts of my work that I often get to see the extraordinary lengths others will go to, to help others in times of trouble. Only in the last twenty-four hours we heard about the police officer who was lost from Holt; and about the lengths his colleagues and local residents went to, in an effort to find him.

You don’t need me to tell you about the amazing work of other organisations in our area that go on week in week out, supporting our communities in a myriad of ways.

We often hear how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area (which of course we are). But sometimes I think we forget that our area is beautiful inside and out, maybe it’s because of our surroundings, that so many of you have big hearts too? Thank you for making our home what it is.

Clearly in reflective mood today.

News from The Holt Community Centre

We had a great team turn up for the Big Weekend Clean Up, and what a difference 2 days made! A huge thank you to those who came and helped to scrub the Centre top to bottom, in readiness for painting, which we were able to start on the Sunday. Those who have been into the Centre since will hopefully have noticed the difference already, and we’ve only just begun. If you would like to come and help us continue to transform the Centre for the benefit of all please do call, you will be welcomed most enthusiastically onto the team!

Our Community Cinema audiences enjoyed 2 showings of Stan and Ollie this month, and we await A Star is Born with great anticipation.

Having seen the film myself, I can highly recommend seeing it. We are very blessed to have our own Community Cinema in Holt; please do help us to continue this service by coming and enjoying the screenings that we show.

It is with sadness that we say goodbye to Howard Foale, our administrator, after 4 ½ years of service to the Charity. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank him for his service, and wish him all the best for the future. We have a new face starting mid-May, Daniel Josh, who will be our new Centre Manager, and will be at the Centre Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm.

Don’t forget to get your tickets for Arabian Night on 25th May; tickets for these events go quickly, so do get them early if you can.

We are very excited to announce new BINGO evenings starting in June…more information to follow in the next column. Suffice to say they’re going to be a great nights, so don’t miss it!

Our AGM is on 28th May in the Lounge at 7.00pm. Please do come and hear about the exciting plans for the future of the Charity. Blythe Spirit?

Dear Jo, How could Mr Lytton verify his version (Issue 424) of a childhood anecdote from "spirit medium" Bertha Harris, whose tales are questionable (cf. Leslie Price, Psypioneer Journal, Jan-Feb 2016)?

As seen from comparable "celebrities" like Madame Blavatsky, Uri Geller or George Adamski, there seems no limit to human gullibility. And "spiritualist" descriptions of the post-mortem "Summer Land" are often too banal, ridiculous and contradictory to be credible.

My recollection of Psychic News was of its admittedly frank - exposure of seances, one example including fake "ectoplasm" stuffed under the medium's seat. I used to read it five decades ago in my London homeland of Waltham Forest.

I take no personal pleasure in the decline of Christianity, still less its partial replacement by Islam. Its doctrines are crumbling, but secular left-liberals are quite happy to exploit its first-century self-abnegation ethic to promote unjustified guilt in western populations over 21st-century heritage protection.

Tourist Information Centre

Dear Jo, I'm writing to invite your readers to visit the new Tourist Information Centre in Nelson House, to see what it has to offer, both visitors and residents alike. What a lovely historic house it is. We only opened our doors to the public in April, but already we are busy welcoming people who have all kinds of enquiries. I am just one of the enthusiastic team of volunteers working there, and I absolutely love it because we meet people from all over the UK and abroad and learn so much about the local area ourselves. Opening hours are Mon - Fri, 10.00 until 3.00 pm, and we are trying to cover Saturdays too, but just need a few more willing souls to give up some of their time, either morning or afternoon slots. As part of a team you will feel valued and never alone.

Dear Jo, It is sad I feel the need to ‘defend’ this wonderful facility; supporting recreation for so many.

The football club has existed for nearly 125 years and is solely dependent on volunteers. This particular centre in Woodfield existed before the housing in this area. It exists only on its own success without any funding from the District Council.

Woodfield Road is a public highway and as such one cannot stop the occasional overlapping of parking needs. I am personally aware that the car park is also used by non-sport members of the public, but they respect these facilities, as do keep fit walkers, runners and families whose children are on holiday. At present 13 child/youth football teams, plus 3 adult teams and also the very successful expanding bowls facility exist.

Perhaps the one or two possible NIMBYS in Woodfield Road should accept the invitation of Paul Sanders, Chairman of Holt Playing Fields and attend the monthly meetings.

To all NIMBYS, be positive not negative, work with the Sports Centre, not against it. It is not going away. Learn to live with it, please!!

Budgens of Holt Car Park

Dear Jo, In reply to the letter from Ms Watson, we are grateful for your feedback and take our customer satisfaction very seriously. As such, after listening and understanding the issues that car park users have had with the new system, we will be forthwith making the following changes: It is evident that some of our customers have struggled with inputting their registration number, so we will be checking all penalty charge notices (PCNs) that are issued. If the parking company that monitors our car park can clearly see someone has paid and made an attempt to enter their registration — even if there are a few mistakes — no PCN will be issued.

We will concentrate on people who abuse the car park by making no attempt to pay or overstay their parking period.

Since its introduction at Christmas last year, the scheme to offer 30 minutes free parking at the Budgens Holt car park has been a huge benefit to so many people. It has never been our intention to incorrectly penalise good law-abiding customers and we want to ensure we put this recent issue right. We hope this letter shows how much we have listened and want to help our customers.

Grove Lane Lighting

Dear Jo, I am very concerned at the continued development in Grove Lane. I estimated that approximately 200 vehicles a day drive down

Grove lane. We have lived in Grove Lane for 19 years and very few people break the speed limit of 30mph. The proposal is for 4 speed restrictions in the lane.

What we desperately need is an update in the lanes lighting. There are no lights at the bottom of the lane by the old football pitch. Several years ago I almost knocked down a paper boy on the corner as he had no lights on. The lane lights come under the jurisdiction of the town council, the sided roads of the lane under the County Council all of which have been upgraded. My concern about the lights in the lane I have made to a number of town councillor’s attention. We don’t need speed restrictions, we need lights.

Banks and Brexit

Dear Jo, I believe the Government have a death wish. By giving away their bargaining power they have come up with such a poor deal we would be better staying in the E.U. What has happened is that the keepers of our Sovereign Nation have allowed it to stoop so low.

And now I receive notification that the Ministry of Works and Pensions wish to pay my pension into my bank. Perhaps Amber Rudd hasn’t heard that bank branches are closing. My post office is a life line these days without my local Nat West.

I can’t be the only one which is almost bemused by the sheer incompetence of the governance of our country.

Dead Sea Scrolls

Dear Jo, In the Dead Sea Scrolls God’s two Messiahs are called Aaron and Israel. In the book of Isaiah they are called Jacob and Israel. At (Numbers 24:17) they are symbolised as star and sceptre (priest and king). These are the two Messiahs of (Zechariah 4:14 and Revelation 11:3); who have been replaced by the mythical Messiah called Jesus Christ.

Islam and the Golden Rule

Dear Jo, David Ashton (Readers Write, Issue 422) states that the Koran does not proclaim the Golden Rule (Leviticus 19:18 – Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself).

I’ve just returned from a few days with my son in Cornwall, and on his computer he found various relevant quotes, to wit: “Serve Allah, … and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer…” (Qu’ran 4:36).

The leading North Norfolk Festival has also announced a new prize specifically aimed at younger artists. The Sworders Art Prize is open to artists between 16 and 23. Itteringham Open Gardens and Shop

an East Anglia Countryside Alliance Award. The shop also supports 55 local producers and firms by selling their products.

Having been threatened with closure, 2017’s Save Our Shop campaign concluded with NNDC stepping in to purchase the premises and secure the shop’s future. The committee that run the shop have a variety of plans regarding how to take the shop forwards in the years to come.

Inevitably fundraising is essential to make these plans reality.

The small village of Itteringham near Aylsham has a hidden gem at the heart of the community.

The Village Shop has been in existence since 1637 providing the locals with goods and services. It was once owned by Lord Walpole’s estate and the freehold was sold off in 1996. At the time, a meeting was held in the village and the decision made to lease the business from private owners so that the shop could continue. This year is the 25th anniversary of the shop being opened as a community business. Today it is run by a combination of paid members of staff, a part time postmistress, and lots of volunteers who freely give their time to ensure the shop continues to be a valuable resource for the village and surrounding area. The shop and cafe are supported by many loyal customers and is a favourite with cyclists and walkers. It has won awards including

To that end, the Itteringham Open Gardens event is taking place on 2nd June, from 11am – 5pm, entry to around 10 beautiful gardens is just £5, including a guide map which is available from the Village Hall. As well as viewing the gardens there will be a pop-up ice cream kiosk in the bus shelter, local produce and light refreshments to buy at the Village Hall and teas at the shop’s cafe.

All proceeds from the day will go to keeping this little gem open for business!

KELLING PROBUS CLUB APRIL MEETING

Kelling Probus Club held its April lunch meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on 18th of April. Seventeen members were present and after a tasty lunch chairman Andrew Hyatt welcomed our speaker Robert Smith who talked about Wells next the Sea and his job as harbour master there.

Roberts talk was not only interesting but also humorous and entertaining, he began by telling us of his early life involving the sea and his early working for a shipping company and fishing on his father’s boat. After this he became assistant, deputy, and eventually harbour master.

Robert told us that the harbour was originally much farther inland, and the new harbour was built in 1847 financed by bonds and some donations from local gentry and traders. A High Commission in 2010 set up the present set up of a harbour board and it works quite well, and the harbour employs more than 200 people in various trades. One of the things he found difficult was all the bureaucracy involved and the huge amount of paper work. However, he still loved all the work round the Wells Harbour area and his staff checked every arrival and departure and kept their eyes open for any one breaking the law such as smuggling and illegal migration. He was asked lots of questions about his job and answered them honestly and clearly. He was given a hearty vote of thanks by Gary Mitchell.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLING The Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.

Dear friends, Maundy Thursday saw our very own churchwarden, Janet Dickinson make her way to St George’s Chapel at tWindsor Castle, to receive this years Maundy money from her Marjesty Queen Elizabeth.

In recognition for Janet’s service to the church and to commemorate the Queen’s 93rd birthday Janet was one of 93 women and 93 men chosen to be honoured in this way.

At a special service Janet received two commemorative purses, one red and one white. The red purse contained a £5 coin commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria and a 50p coin portraying Sherlock Holmes.. The white purse cotained uniquely minted pennies totallaling the Queen’s age, 93pence, made up of one, two, three and four silver penny pieces.

Maundy Thursday falls in Holy Week and is of course the day before Good Friday and commemorates the day on which Jesus met with his disciples to celebrate the Last Supper.

While at supper, assuming the role of a servant, Jesus washed his disciples feet and instructed them to follow his example and do the same. They were to serve one another in love. Imitating Jesus even early English monarchs were known to wash the feet of beggars at a special service.

The tradtion of the monarch distributing money on Maundy Thursday can be traced back to King John in the 13th century who distributed gifts of garments, forks, and food to the poor of Knaresborough in Yorkshire. He is also known to have given gifts of small silver coins to the poor at a ceremony in Rochester. Subsequent monarchs have continued in the tradition with Queen Elizabeth being present at all but four Maundy Thursday services during her reign. Every Cathedral in England has hosted the Maundy Thursday Royal Service and for the past two years the service has been held at Windsor.

The distribution of the Maundy Thursday money by the monarch is a reminder that Jesus came among us as one not to be served but to serve. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth has dedicated her life to the service of her country and she also rightly honours the service of others.

My congratulations to Janet and I am sure her royal day out will be a day she will allways remember.

Charlotte Philcox, well known Norfolk Garden Designer, writer, teacher and broadcaster came to Holt WI on Wednesday 17th April to give a light hearted and amusing talk on Remedies and Rosewater.

It is very surprising how ordinary things from the garden can be used as homemade remedies and Charlotte herself has tried many, some successful and others not. One of the unfortunate ones was making an oatmeal bath. She ended up smelling of porridge and with oat flakes in unmentionable places. Of course, she should have used groat oats, rather than the smaller breakfast ones.

And she didn’t recommend a pomade made by ladies in the past, of pig fat and rosewater and grated apple for a beautiful white skin. The apple and rosewater sound fine but the pig fat is definitely a no no.

A happier result came from her GP who prescribed gaffer tape for her wart; other excellent remedies are ginger for tummy upsets and travel sickness, cider vinegar for arthritis (recommended by Sir Ralph Fiennes), onion placed in the ear for coughs, a cup of oxo for sore throats and a cork placed in the bed for leg cramps.

Many other remedies were talked about some of them highly unlikely but fun; for example, conception can happen if the tide is in, but not if it’s out! And hiccups can be cured by clenching a penny between the buttocks and a left (has to be left) sock which has been worn all day wrapped around the neck for a sore throat. I don’t think I would care to try either of those, even if they worked! And certainly, I would not brush a stye with the tail of a cat!

But I may try elderflower and rosewater mixture as a toner for skin. It sounds very fragrant; also, a mixture of almond oil, peppermint oil and honey which Charlotte said is wonderful as a lip balm in the winter.

Charlotte ended her talk by telling us we must never meddle with gunpowder while holding a candle.

This was a really interesting and lively talk with lots of laughter from the audience.

After tea, Caroline Purkiss talked about the Annual General Meeting , celebrating 100 years of the WI held at the Theatre Royal which was a great success; 1000 ladies sang Jerusalem and Pam Ayers kept the audience in gales of laughter with chat and her poetry.

Glen Scott told us about her visit to Weybourne WI. The speaker was Tracy Mackness of the Giggling Pig and author of the book The Life and Times of an Essex Bad Girl. Glen said the talk was inspirational.

The next meeting is on May 15th when there will be a fun competition and talk about Resolutions.

The Honourable and Right Reverend John Thomas Pelham M.A. D.D., Bishop of Norwich

John Thomas Pelham was born on 2nd January 1811 to Thomas Pelham, 2nd Earl of Chichester, a holder of various Government posts, and his wife, Lady Mary Henrietta Juliana Pelham, Countess of Chichester. He was one of 10 children, and was baptised on 21st July 1811 in St George’s, Hanover Square, London. His two older brothers were Henry Thomas Pelham, 3rd Earl of Chichester and Frederick Thomas Pelham who joined the Royal Navy, later becoming a Rear Admiral.

Pelham was educated at Westminster School and thereafter at Christ Church College, Oxford, where he graduated BA in 1832. He was ordained deacon by the Rt Reverend Charles James Blomfield, Bishop of London in 1834. He first served as deacon in St George’s Church, Eastergate in Sussex. There he came to know Henry Edward Manning, the curate at St Giles Church in Graffham, also in Sussex. Later, Pelham became an Anglican bishop: Manning converted to Roman Catholicism, and eventually became a Cardinal. They remained life-long friends.

In 1837, Pelham was appointed curate to the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Bergh Apton in Norfolk. On 6th November 1845, he married Henrietta Tatton, in St Wilfrid’s Church in Northenden, Cheshire. A retired Bishop of Norwich, the Right Reverend Edward Stanley, officiated. The bride’s father was William Tatton. Tattons had owned nearby Wythenshawe Hall, a 16th century timber-framed house, for some 400 years.

Pelham and his wife had four sons and a daughter: Henry Francis born 1846, John Barrington born 1848, Sidney born 1849, Fanny born 1853 and Herbert born 1855. Henry became professor of ancient history at Oxford, and President of Trinity College. All three remaining brothers entered the Church: Herbert and Fanny never married. There was however, one event which must have been really extremely sad for the family. In 1881 the Reverend Herbert and his brother the Reverend Sidney were staying in a hotel near Montreux. Early on the morning of 30th May, they left their hotel to walk in the mountains.

During their return, the Reverend Herbert slipped and fell about 240 feet down a cliff. He died instantly. The newspapers of the time reported the public’s great sympathy: many messages of condolence were sent to the Bishop.

In 1847 Pelham was appointed an honorary canon of Norwich Cathedral, a chaplain to Queen Victoria, and in 1852, perpetual curate of Christ Church in Hampstead. In 1857 he received his MA and Doctorate of Divinity. In 1855, on the recommendation of Lord Palmerston, Pelham was appointed to the living of St Marylebone Church in London: there on 30th April 1857, as reported in the Morning Chronicle, he was consecrated as Bishop of Norwich by the Right Reverend John Bird Sumner, Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by two bishops.

Pelham surely read newspapers about the Crimean War over the years 1853-1856, not least because his brother in the Royal Navy was involved as captain in two Baltic campaigns against Russia. Newspapers will also have kept the family informed about events such as the 1871 Declaration of the German Empire, the 1871 Congress of Berlin, and Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887.

Athough the Bishop was essentially a staunch evangelical, he was nonetheless able to regard the High Church Oxford Movement with equanimity, and certainly valued his long friendship with Cardinal Manning. Over the years he visited his Norfolk and Suffolk parishes regularly and the 1861 and1871 censuses illustrate this point: on those two census days, while his wife and family remained in the Bishop’s Palace in Norwich, the Bishop visited respectively the Reverend Charles H Gaye, Rector of St Matthews Church in Ipswich and the Reverend George Attwood, Rector of Framlingham, near Woodbridge. The Bishop encouraged the appointment of rural deans as another way of keeping in touch with the numerous parishes in his episcopacy. He worked hard at forming new rectories, vicarages and schools. His reforming zeal lead him even to make plans for an extension of the Episcopate. Above all, he was a man of great piety and was well liked by all.

After 36 years as Bishop, he retired with his wife in 1893 to a house called Sunny Hill in Thorpe St Andrew, a suburb of Norwich. But sadly, their retirement was cut short. His wife, Henrietta died on 4th January 1894, and her husband died on 1st May of the same year, at the age of 82. On his death certificate, Dr Peter Eade described the cause of death as: Age and Debility, Cardiac Syncope. The magazine of the former Bishop’s old school, Westminster, dated May 1894, reported that he died while seated in his armchair at his library table. He is commemorated by an impressive marble monument in Norwich Cathedral.

UPPER SHERINGHAM BELLS WILL BE RINGING OUT AGAIN SOON!

We are delighted to report that the appeal is progressing so well that, if all goes to plan, we will be ringing the bells in time for Remembrance this year, and certainly by Christmas. Remember to listen out for us!

We still need to raise the last bit of the money – please do consider helping us with this last push – what better legacy than to be able to say, “I helped those bells ring out again”.

We are already training new bellringers at nearby St Andrew’s in Holt who will also help with ringing the bells at All Saints Upper Sheringham – but we are always keen to teach new people so if you ever fancied trying your hand at this ancient art get in touch! It’s nothing like you see on the television – you do not fly through the air, you do not need to be strong, you do not need to be musical or mathematical – you just need a sense of rhythm and a sense of humour!

As we start dismantling the fixtures and fittings prior to the bells being taken to the bell works in Dorset, we will have a few items we could sell as mementoes of this project – we will have some clappers, chiming hammers, pulley blocks and an odd selection of handbells in varying conditions. Get in touch if you would like more information or would like to make an offer for anything or come and have a look at what we have. We won’t charge extra for the rust and dust!!

The photo shows an example of a clapper (from a different church, we haven’t removed ours yet) and the actual handbells and pulley blocks and other random items that we are offering.

Another exciting bit of news is that we have been accepted into the Tesco “Bags of Help” scheme in their stores in Sheringham and Mundesley– throughout May and June we will be one of their chosen charities so please remember to pick up your blue token at the till and vote for us!

Aylsham Open Gardens Weekend t1st and 2nd June 2019

A record number of private gardens will be open for the public to enjoy in Aylsham over the weekend of 1st and 2nd June. Seventeen are open on Saturday and nineteen on Sunday. You will be able to stroll through woodland, gaze into ponds and pools and sit in courtyard gardens. The route also takes you passed the preserved World War Two “Pill Box” at Bure Meadows which is surrounded by a commemorative garden.

As well as planting ideas you can take home inspiration on the use of garden sculpture, managing a wormery to make fertiliser, novel ideas on disguising bins and growing fruit and vegetables.

When you need a rest sit and enjoy

the delicious teas, cakes, ice-cream and light lunches that will be available. There will also be a plant identification competition, free to enter, with a garden voucher worth £20 going to the winner.

The Open Garden event is organised by Aylsham in Bloom. Money raised from ticket sales enables the volunteers to continue funding the Bloom planting around the town. Money raised in the individual gardens from the sale of various items including refreshments, plants and books goes to a charity of the gardener’s choice. This year’s charities include the Norfolk Heart Trust, Oxfam, Aylsham Methodist Church and the Aylsham Care Trust.

Tickets will be on sale on the open days from 9.30am from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard. The cost is £5 for one day and £8 for a weekend ticket. Those aged 16 and under are free.

LANGHAM DOME NEWS

The Dome re-opened for the 2019 season on 4 April and will be open according to the published schedule from now until the end of the October Half-Term.

Our Spitfire memorial appeal on Crowd Funder has been very successful. With very generous pledges from 100 supporters and several additional donations outside the initiative for both the Spitfire and the Dome itself we are now in a position to plan the completion of this project and we hope that before the end of this season the Spitfire will be mounted outside the Dome.

Although the appeal has finished you can still find the link at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/langham-dome-spitfire-memorial. So if you would like more information on the project please have a look - especially at the very informative introductory film contributed by former Gunthorpe (now Blakeney) resident Barney Broom, and his colleague Phillip Mutton and their company Trafalgar Productions - undoubtedly a major contributor to the success of the appeal.

Our iconic selection of eight aircraft prints, “The Langham Dome Aviation Collection”, from local Sheringham based artist Janet Samuel is now complete for the 2019 season. They will initially be sold in the Dome, the RAF Air Defence Museum at Neatishead, the House and Garden Shop Holt and Driftwood Gallery in Sheringham, All profits will support the FoLD charity. The last Lynx included pictures from two of the cards and here are two more. One is the Beaufighter Mk X of 489 Sqn RNZAF, part of the ANZAC Wing operating from Langham in WW2, and the other is of a DHC Chipmunk 10 - an aircraft which can still be seen over Langham occasionally today.

Plans for the RAF Langham Reunion and Dome Heritage Day on Saturday 1 June 2019 are now firming up. Our request for Battle of Britain Memorial Flight participation has been granted and we will now enjoy a full display by a BBMF Hurricane as well as an eye stopping aerobatic display with the Extra 260 flown by Steve Carver. Come in 1940’s dress if you wish - you may win a prize. There will be live 1940’s music from the “Blighty Belles” and many other exhibits.

Food and drink will be available from the Langham Village BBQ, the Binham Chequers and Ronaldo’s Ice Creams.

Grand Draw tickets are now on sale at the Dome and with local volunteers and Trustees, and will also be on sale on the Day. With three “equal” aviation related first prizes including a glider experience flight for two with the Norfolk Gliding Club at Tibenham; a Tiger Moth flight from Langham and a helicopter flight from Binham they are well worth “taking a bet on”, and there are many other prizes. CREDIT CRUNCH COOKING Vibrant Veggie Treat

Eating should be a delightful, sensory pleasure, full of tempting textures, smells, flavours and exotic colours. Too much of our Western diet has been monopolised by dull beige food, over processed and not at all good for us; fast and functional but not at all exciting. It has now been agreed that the best diet we can aspire to consists of Mediterranean influences; lots of fresh fruit and veg, delicious herbs and spices, nuts, seeds, olive oil and fresh fish. It can be quite expensive to achieve this every meal, but we can all introduce as many vegetables as possible to most meals, thinking fresh food rather than packet food, and swap unhealthy snacks for nuts and fruit. Making these small, consistent changes adds up to a big difference in our overall long-term health. This recipe is a delicious blend of fresh, zingy flavours, packing in maximum nutrients for minimum fuss. Easy to prepare, with a beautiful range of colours, topped with warm aubergine and delightfully creamy ‘squeaky cheese’ it’s scoring high on the health stakes as well as being a looker! Who knew being healthy could be quite so tasty and easy?

Couscous Tabbouleh with Roasted Aubergine and Halloumi

Serves 4 250g cous cous 1 hpd tsp Marigold stock powder ½ red onion, finely chopped 3 tomatoes, deseeded and finely chopped 2 inch piece cucumber, deseeded and finely chopped 3 mini yellow and orange peppers, deseeded and finely chopped Handful fresh flat parsley, chopped Handful fresh mint leaves, chopped Juice of 1 lemon Olive oil Salt and pepper 2 packs Halloumi cheese 1 large aubergine Prepare your couscous by placing in a large bowl, and pouring 300ml boiling water mixed with the stock powder over it. Give it a stir, then cover and leave for 5 mins. Meanwhile, chop all the veg and herbs and set aside. Once the couscous is ready, fork over to separate and stir in the lemon juice and 2 tblsp olive oil, ensuring all is mixed, then leave to cool. Once cooled, mix in all the veg and herbs and stir well. Place in fridge to cool completely. Now chop your aubergine into rounds 1cm thick, toss in a little olive oil and pop into a hot oven on 190° for about 15 mins until starting to char on the edges. Whilst that is cooking, grill thick slices of halloumi cheese on a griddle pan until heated through and a little scorched with griddle marks. Serve bowls of Tabbouleh topped with rounds of aubergine and Halloumi Cheese.

Thousands of flowers created for dementia awareness

Park and Ride campaign launched as major construction project takes place at NNUH

Work gets underway this week to build a new floor on the east wing of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital which will house a new Interventional Radiology Unit (IRU), doubling the number of radiology and cardiology procedure rooms at the hospital.

During the nine month construction phase, the car park nearest the Emergency Department will be used as a construction site, reducing parking on site by 70 spaces out of 800 patient and visitor parking spaces. Patients using the Emergency Department will be asked to use the Urgent Care Unit entrance to the building. The ambulance parking area has also been reconfigured around the building works.

Patients and visitors who are making routine visits to the hospital are being asked to use the Costessey Park and Ride service where possible.

The service runs every 15 minutes from 6.30am to 8.20pm, every weekday, for £1 per person for a return journey, compared with a minimum parking fee of £3 for up to three hours. The hospital will be running a campaign to raise awareness of the Park and Ride option by including information in patient letters, on posters, and through social media.

Simon Hackwell, Director of Strategy at NNUH, says: “This development will help us to meet increasing demand on services, reduce waiting times for patients and enable NNUH staff to offer new services in the future such as stroke thrombectomy where blood clots are directly removed from the brain following a stroke. Over the coming months there will be some inconvenience on site as the construction works take place and we are asking patients to bear with us and use the excellent Park and Ride Services wherever possible.”

The new Interventional Radiology Unit (IRU) will double the number of radiology and cardiology procedure rooms at the hospital.

Interventional Radiology is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery that uses radiological image guidance such as x-ray, ultrasound, CT and MRI to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. The car park will reopen in early 2020 and the new services will be running from Spring 2020.

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) will be awash with forget-me-nots next month after more than 12,000 flowers were created to help raise dementia awareness.

Norfolk’s knitters and stitchers have made thousands of flowers over the last month, which will go on display as part of the NNUH Dementia Information and Advice Fayre on Monday 13 May. Community groups and individuals across the county, including care home staff and residents, dementia support groups, library users, Women’s Institute members, NNUH staff and volunteers, members of the Norwich and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK, UEA Knitting and Crochet Society and Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers got involved in the art project.

The Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers have also made a giant crochet forget-me-not, which will go on display on the day.

Liz Yaxley, Dementia Services Manager at NNUH, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and creativity of all the knitters and stitchers across Norfolk who have contributed to this exciting project.

Thank you to the countless individuals and community groups who have generously contributed.

We have big plans for the thousands of forget-me-nots that have been created for the fayre and we look forward to displaying them in the East Atrium on 13 May.” The NNUH Dementia Information and Advice Fayre will take place between 10am and 4.30m on 13 May and the hospital has assembled a wealth of experts and agencies for the event.

WEYBOURNE GOOD COMPANIONS

On Wednesday, 24th April, Weybourne Good Companions Group met at the village hall for a brief AGM. The committee members were thanked for their hard work and each was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Debbie Thompson, Artistic Director at the Sheringham Little Theatre. She spoke with great enthusiasm about her work and gave us a brief history of the building and explained how the theatre has developed over the years.

She is proud that there is now a full programme of events throughout the year including films, live theatre showings, Summer rep and the Christmas pantomime.

The Hub Café is a popular meeting place and hosts monthly Jazz events, the Playing for Cake session and Monday evening drama classes for young people.

Debbie described the many volunteers who help out as the ‘life blood’ of the theatre and said it wouldn’t be able to run without them. There are currently 62, but more are needed for a variety of roles.

Sandy Bailey thanked Debbie for her entertaining talk, before we all enjoyed the refreshments.

The Good Companions Group meet at Weybourne village hall at 2.30 pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month and enjoy a variety of speakers and other forms of entertainment. There will be a tribute to Cliff Richard on 22nd May. Entry is £2.50, which includes refreshments. All welcome!

Some of the girls in the village went away to work. One of them, Iris, got a job as a ‘bedder’ at Cambridge University. (She did the cleaning for the undergraduates) She met a girl called Elsie there and made friends with her. Elsie was an orphan and in the long holidays, she had nowhere to go.

Iris invited her to stay in Briston with her parents. I was about twenty years old then and I fell in love with Elsie.

We got married, but I had never saved my money. As a result, we were really poor. Our first home together was a room in Iris’s parent’s house.

We had a two burner Valor oil stove on which all our cooking and water heating was done.

Elsie managed to get a cleaning job with a local farmer and he let us rent an old bungalow in the woods at Thurning. He took his rent from Elsie’s wages. This place was in terrible condition – you could walk outside through the scullery without bothering with the door. Any water came from a well. The local horse dealers used to come round when we were out at work and take drums of water for their horses. We would come home to a dry well. I was savage so I went round to complain. They left me some water after that.

We had a coal sack for a fireside rug and not much furniture. I remember we had to share a single bed. I liked that! Elsie found it very lonely when she was there without me. I always worked very long hours. There were prisoners of war about then as it was just after the war had finished. One Italian prisoner made a lovely fruit bowl from scraps of wood and painted Perspex. Elsie bought it from him, and I still have it. In the end I found a cottage to rent not far from Briston crossroads. We were back in the village!

I bought my friend an elephant for his room.

Next of Kin appeal – Brian Veal

Police are appealing for help to trace the family of a man who died at his home address earlier this month. 81-year-old Brian Veal who lived at an address in Malcaster Close in Mundford died on Monday 15 April 2019.

Guilty pleas in Downham Market trial

Two men have today (Monday 29 April 2019) entered guilty pleas following the death of a man from Downham Market almost nine years ago.

Steven Louro aged 43 and of South Lynn Plain, King’s Lynn, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and perverting the course of justice and Lester Aisthorpe, 58, of Basil Drive, Downham Market, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice.

Both were due to stand trial this week at Norwich Crown Court, having been charged in connection with the death of Jan Hogan whose body was found in his flat in Basil Drive in the town on 23 May 2010. Both defendants have been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Friday 14 June 2019.

Breaking the impasse... resolving conflict using mediation techniques

5. BE RESPECTFUL Whatever your feelings, it’s important to treat the other party with respect. Being insulting only creates more barriers and makes it more difficult for any resolution to be achieved.

6. BE PERSUASIVE Highlight the merits of your position so the other party can see that their point of view may not be as strong as they originally believed. This can also bring the other party’s attention to the mutual benefits of a deal.

7. INTERESTS Identifying the other party’s interests can be difficult – but once you’ve asked questions and gleaned more information on what they want to achieve, you’ll have a much better understanding of what can be done.

8 . BRAINSTORMING Neither party is going to leave with a settlement that includes everything they want. Explore and identify options which will satisfy both parties.

9. EMOTION Although all conflict gives rise to anger and frustration, it’s important to keep your emotions in check so you are able to think clearly and practically.

10. PATIENCE A fully-informed overview can take time before a final settlement is reached, so try and remain patient – it will pay off eventually!

4. WORK TOWARDS A SETTLEMENT Initially, each party’s aim will be to win, but it’s important to realise that resolution isn’t going to be a ‘win’ for one and a ‘loss’ for another – it will be a compromise that enables both parties to move on.

I work for a charity (Change, Grow, Live) which delivers the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service and we are desperate to recruit committed and passionate volunteers who would like to spend a day a month with a young person in care. The children and young people we work with have suffered abuse, neglect and often both; they often mistrust adults and need positive role models to show them that relationships can be trusting, healthy and positive. The role of an Independent Visitor can be immensely rewarding and fun; taking a child or teenager out once a month to have fun together by engaging in community activities or visiting places of interest. Minimum age for volunteer applicants is 21 and minimum commitment is for 2 years, once a month. Full training and support are provided, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

Sixteen members and friends from Weybourne WI took part in a walk on 17th April to raise funds for ACWW, a charity which connects and supports women and communities worldwide.

Each year people celebrate ACWW’s international network by joining together to ‘Walk the World’.

The weather was sunny and warm, as we walked the three and a half mile circular route around the grounds of Bayfield Estate, which made it all the more enjoyable when we stopped en route for refreshments at the Natural Surroundings Café.

Two Messiahs came back from the dead (Revelation 11:11). Lazarus came back from the dead (John 11:43), and as we all know Jesus came back from the dead. In the letter to the Colossians we are told that Jesus was the first to return from the dead (1:18). But the two Messiahs would have been the first to return as they lived during the lifetime of Judas Maccabaeus see (1 Maccabees 7:16-17) and (Psalm 79:1-3). After them it was Lazarus who came back; and then last of all Jesus. The Christian writings lie! The truth is that neither Lazarus nor Jesus came back from the dead as they were not real people, only the two Messiahs actually lived and there is no evidence that they were resurrected as we are told at (Revelation 11:11).

‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT'

with Robin Combe The next interview in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series at Holt Library, is on Thursday May 16th 2019, with Robin Combe (of Bayfield Estate). Sessions run from 11.00am till 12.00 noon.

Born in London in 1934, Robin has lived in Norfolk since 1943. He served for 10 years in the Royal Navy, and worked for 10 years at the Watney Mann brewery, subsequently he has run the Glandford fish farm, Wiveton fruit farm, and Glaven Moulded products. Having travelled the world, he says NOWHERE compares with North Norfolk.

He is a Church Warden of St Martins and a Trustee of Shell museum. He was Chair of Holt Housing Association for 16 years, a founder member and ex-chair River of the Glaven Conservation Group; a founder member of the Cockle dinghy sailing club; a Trustee of Excel 2000; a North Norfolk District Councillor for 8 years. He has been a deadly enemy of Signal Cray fish for the past 6 years among other things but, although the facts contest his modesty, he does not feel he has been a significant contributor to anything!

These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view.

There’s a maritime theme at Wells Maltings in Wells-next-the-Sea where the latest art exhibition, Ebb and Flow: Images of the Sea, is going very well, with several hundred people already through the doors. Meanwhile, following the success of the first SEA FEVER festival last May, the full line-up of speakers for SEA FEVER 2, this year’s celebration of poetry and prose, has also been announced.

SEA FEVER 2 will take place from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th May and is headlined by a host of household names including Sir Andrew Motion, Julian Blackburn, Roger Law and Kevin Crossley-Holland. It is a huge privilege to welcome back Sir Andrew Motion, who last came to Wells in the days when he was Poet Laureate. Other poets to give readings including Sally Festing, Elaine Stewart and Rebecca Watts, as well as Norfolk’s own Kevin Crossley-Holland, one of the founders of Poetry-next-the-Sea. He will be launching his new collaboration with photographer Andy Rafferty: This is Seahenge: A Journey. And there’s plenty more. Farmer Jack

There is a kind of innocence in the Norfolk character which is often shown to kind effect in the county's humour, and the story of Farmer Jack may be a case in point.

Combined Eclectic Country & Western were a tribute group from Denver, Colorado, USA and did tours in which they guaranteed to do any number in a faithful rendition of the original artist. A forfeit of a $1000.00 was guaranteed for any failure on their part, and on a trip to Gt. Britain the forfeiture was set at 500 pounds.

Their trip to the UK went swimmingly. Travelling around the country they did the old favourites of Willie Nelson, Don Williams, Glen Campbell, Tammie Wynette, Dollie Parton, Jim Reeves, Conway Twitty et al. Every number was applauded as being in the true spirit and style of the original and never once was the group found wanting.

Like most Americans, the members of the group were sentimental about their origins, and, as descendants of emigrants from that little village called Denver in fenland Norfolk, decided to complete their happy UK tour at that place. A great barn was rented out and soon the rafters rang with all the numbers of country and western.

A last number was called for and a rustic named Percy stood up and asked for "Farmer Jack". The stetsons went into a huddle and finally their leader stood up and manfully announced: "We don't know this 'Farmer Jack' Percy, but before you collect your five-hundred quid you gotta step up and give us a rendition."

Up stepped Percy flushed of face and, seizing the proffered microphone, crooned: "Farmer Jack to a king, from loneliness to a wedding ring etc etc....!! www.holtchronicle.co.uk

HOLT BOWLS CLUB OPEN FOR BUSINESS

You remember that beautiful Easter weekend? What a wonderful time it was to open the bowls season. Before we started bowling we celebrated the results of all the maintenance work that had been accomplished since we hung up our bowling gear last autumn with bubbly. As always, the green has had regular attention throughout the winter and now looks in outstanding condition. Alongside, the Clubhouse has had a major overhaul. Externally it now no longer looks like an overgrown garden shed, having been given a complete covering of “willow” paint. Inside, all areas have been repainted, the kitchen revamped and our storage rationalized. The challenge now is to keep it tidy and in its pristine condition.

So now it’s down to business. Those who haven’t bowled indoors during the winter are once more having to get to grips with the sport before the games against other clubs get underway. Some games will be in the various local leagues whilst others will be in the first round of Knock Out County competitions.

Not all our bowling is so competitive and we welcome new members (experienced or beginners) to our three times weekly “roll-ups”. All we need now is a warm dry summer.

Aylsham Singers’ Spring Concert Saturday 18th May 2019

Success of Norfolk’s Great Big Read as it is revealed the titles were borrowed nearly 2,000 times

News from Broadland Chess

Hi there everyone, Well just this week I have returned from a fortnight in warmer climes. I have accompanied my chess playing other half to a tournament in the beautiful island of Rhodes, so there are advantages of being a chess widow. Roy Hughes was playing in the European Seniors World Championship, with a list of competitors including several Grand and International Masters from all corners of Europe. I have attached a couple of pics of the event.

Although Roy was not one of the medal winners, he did receive a grading prize for the best performance by an English player, presented by Stewart Reuben from the English Chess Federation.

So, moving on from one of our senior members of the club we now turn our attention to the Juniors who continue to show great skill and promise in all age groups. In the Norwich Junior Congress, Broadland’s most successful players were, in the Challengers section: 1st Benjie Perry, 4th= Jay Ambadkar and Benedict Ward. In the Intermediate section: 2nd George Hall, 3rd= Joshua Dawson. And in the Novice section: 5th= Ruby Perry. This was the largest section with 29 entrants.

The u-11 section of the UK Chess Challenge has finished at the club. The winner was Jacob Davison with 8/8. All of the following have qualified for the Megafinal which will take place in Norwich in early May: Benjie Perry (u-11), Jacob Davison (u-10), George Hall (u-10), Danny Dawson (u-8), Ruby Perry (u-8) and George Artherton (u-7).

Jan Holden, Head of Library and Information Service, said: “This year’s Great Big Read was a fantastic success and we love how it encourages people to explore a range of selected books. It also reminds you of all the other amazing books our libraries stock, so we want to encourage people to ask their librarians for other suggestions if they enjoyed one of this year’s titles.”

The reading promotion for adults launched on 18 March and finished on 23 April with World Book Night, with the titles being borrowed a whopping 1,898 times.

Events celebrated the final night across all 47 libraries, with yoga classes, book clubs and live music performances.

The 23 titles were available at libraries across the county throughout the month and could also be reserved online or at libraries, with some also available as e-books and e-audio.

The list includes crime thrillers, film tie-ins (Juliet Naked and War of the Worlds), some of the best new novels written for young people (The hate u give and Turtles all the way down) and even a book set in Norfolk by the popular crime writer Elly Griffiths (The Chalk Pit).

It is free to join Norfolk Library and Information Service and free to borrow up to 15 books at a time. There are also a range of regular events for all ages at libraries across the county along with free Wi-Fi, computer access and DVDs for hire. The service also offers a range of e-books through its Libby App and e-magazines.

Holt Rugby’s remarkable year

In a play-off against East London, on April 13th Holt Rugby’s First XV produced their best performance to date and secured league promotion to London 2NE. This guarantees that next season Holt’s supporters will be able to enjoy a series of Norfolk derbies: Wymondham, Diss and Norwich will all be in the same league.

Although the 31-22 victory over the visitors from East London was the highlight of the season, the Bridge Road club have achieved remarkable success both on and off the field. The second XV, the Owls, were also promoted, as were the third XV. Chairman Ben Jones and Holt’s strength has always been their ability to develop younger players through First team captain Ashley the ranks and there is every indication that this is set to continue. Holt Colts won Woods Stuart Young the Eastern Counties Plate Final and the Under 16s, 15s and 14s have all made the Holt First XV finals of countywide competitions in their age groups.

Club Chairman, Ben Jones is keen to point out that much of the success is helped by the support of volunteers who deliver off-the field. Holt again hosted the annual Kingswood mini-rugby festival which, in April, brought record numbers of teams and supporters to Bridge Road on two successive Sundays. Administrative support and marketing are also important ingredients: here the club’s website has achieved thirty-second place in terms of activity in a set of national rankings by provider Pitchero. There are over 2,000 rugby clubs in England.

Chairman Ben Jones will be retiring from the position at the AGM in July.

In December 2020 a trio of intrepid rowers will embark on the longest and toughest row of their lives (to date). They are Sandra Squire, Helen Hogan and Kate Palmer, all members of the Kings Lynn Coastal Rowing Club who will be taking part in the, Talisker Atlantic Challenge. See more here: - http://www.klcrc.club/ In order to take part in this mammoth event a serious amount of training will be necessary. To this end the trio ably assisted by Carol Noding, Tim Hogan, Bob Panrucker, Karen Nicklin and photographer Pete Jousiffe set out on Saturday 20th April, in their St Ayles Skiff, the “Lynn Rewet” to row from Kings Lynn and visit all the lifeboat stations along the coast as far as Great Yarmouth, presenting Easter Eggs to all the stations along the way.

As you will appreciate, all coastal rowing is governed by the winds and the tides and timing is therefore of the essence. The team was seriously hampered at the outset by a 45-minute delay with the arrival into The Great Ouse of a Container Ship. This put their timing all awry which meant that they arrived at Old Hunstanton later than planned and as the tide was on the turn. As they departed from Old Hunstanton they were met with the incoming tide and an Easterly wind of about 15- 20 knots and, as they were not making any headway, it was decreed that, with the wind being from that quarter for the proposed duration of the row ie over the Easter weekend, that it would not be possible to complete the row in the allotted time.

However, the KLCRC members were determined not to disappoint the RNLI stations they had planned to visit and took it upon themselves to journey by road to all the Lifeboat Stations between Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth to deliver their Easter wishes and chocolates aplenty.

The Crew were obviously very disappointed not to complete the journey but were very grateful for the input from the RNLI, especially Hunstanton RNLI and Skipper Sandra Squire said: “Throughout the next 3 days, we continued to visit all of Norfolk’s lifeboat stations on schedule. We have spent a great deal of time talking to the crews, learning about their stations and the work they do and of

The 1960’s Monday Club

The 1960’s club held their Easter/Spring tea at Holt Community Centre, thirty six members attended to enjoy a wonderful buffet tea which Josie and her team prepared and served.

Entertainment was by ‘Hank’ singer / comedian from Great Yarmouth.

Some lady members made Easter Bonnets, nine in all. The top three were made by Lucy Starling Hilary Copeman and Joan Attew.

Some gentlemen made button-holes, five in all. The top two being made

by Ron Manders and Peter Bartle.

The Wednesday after Easter some members enjoyed a day trip to Bury St. Edmunds.
