A Note from th e Editor

When I wrote this piece last month, little did I think by the time I wrote again we would have lost our queen of 70 years have a new king

The whole country has gone through so many emotion from shock and grief to final acceptance We have all witnessed the extraordinary scenes of Her Majesty ’s return journey from Scotland to her final resting place at Windsor Castle. The queues lining the Thames to pay their respects and the pageantry of the state funeral, observed by the whole world

There have been so many personal stories of how Queen Elizabeth touched people’s lives and demonstrations of how much she meant to her subjects

We would like to add our condolences to the royal family and thank Her Majesty for her long and dedicated service to this country and beyond. Rest in peace Your Majesty

News from the Venue

October is certainly shaping up to be incredibly busy for us at the Venue, with our new Cozy Café starting on 3rd and running daily Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm, and with 2 exciting in house events planned towards the end in response to asking what you would like to see at your local Community and Arts Centre

On October 22nd we have another Tabletop Sale, back by popular demand, and featuring preloved and craft goods, and on the 29th we are planning a spectacular Family Fun Day, with everything from a climbing wall to fairground games to arts and crafts activities for the kids. Most things will be free, and nothing will be over £1, to enable as many families as possible to enjoy a great time at the Venue, all ending with a great kids Disco with DJ Luke Cole at 2pm to 3pm Kids can come along and bob for apples, take the donut challenge, have their face painted, get arty, play games, eat yummy cakes, climb a wall and dance it all off at the end, and we would love you to turn up in fancy dress too!

Throughout the month we have a veritable smorgasbord of activities on; the return of the Monthly Memory Swap and My Norfolk, My Holt Talks, this month featuring Greshams headmaster Douglas Robb, a cracking Blues Night with live band Against the Grain, Cash Bingo and of course our monthly Cinema Screening, featuring a rare showing of the 100 year old black and white classic Nosferatu (as it ’s nearly Halloween!) There’s also the regular Thursday weekly Café, and all the other great clubs and activities that meet regularly at the Venue We are also seeking more paid Bar and Cleaning Staff to cover events and holidays, so if you have any experience or would like to come and be trained, please do get in touch.

And last but certainly not least, I’m very excited to announce that we have the Barclays Opening Event on Monday 7th November, to launch their new regular service at the Venue They will be available Mondays and Wednesdays every week, sharing the Citizens Advice offices, and will be providing all regular banking services but cash or cheque handling The launch event will be a great way to get to know the Barclays Team and how they will be able to fully support you after the Branch Building closes on the 9th of Dec, and amazingly they are bringing with them the Premier League Trophy and Barclays Women’s Super League Trophy which will be on site to view through the morning, along with a fantastic Community Art Exhibition and raffle , to help raise money for the Charity Please do come along if you can and celebrate this amazing addition to the Venue Family of groups and service providers

Douglas Robb was born in 1970 near Liverpool He has lived and worked in Holt for the last eight years. He was educated in Birkenhead, Edinburgh and Cambridge, and then worked in Zimbabwe, Edinburgh, Loughborough, Oundle, Oswestry and Holt He has been Headmaster of Oswestry School and Gresham's

He loves the people and landscape of Norfolk and Holt, and feels it is the England people like to romanticise! Douglas is a member of Rotary, supports the Holt Youth Project and the community café His hobbies are sport and family

Ken Jones RIP

The celebration of the life of Ken Jones (aka Kay Jay Systems) took place at Colney Wood Burial Park on 7th September and afterwards at the Hunworth Bell.

Ken was a well loved computer engineer in North Norfolk and surrounding areas where he worked his magic in all areas of computing He loved Holt and was secretary to the Holt Society and was a regular visitor to the Venue where his services were sometimes needed

His untimely death will be a shock to all who knew him and a huge loss to all who used his services, many of whom became his friends and loved him for his kindness and patience and generosity with his time

MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT - Our monthly talks are back with Gresham’s School Headmaster, Douglas Robb. He will share his life and love of the area and the school he has been headmaster of for several years. The bar is open at 6.30 and the talk starts promptly at 7.00. This is free but do book in as places are limited.

We will celebrate the opening of the Barclays Bank services at the Venue with a ceremony at 10am. Come and chat to the team all through the day. Refreshments available. The Launch Event has been planned to be a great day for all customers to get to know the Barclays Team and how they will be able to fully support you a er the Branch Building closes on December 9th.

The Premier League Trophy and Barclays Women’s Super League Trophy will be on site to view through the morning, and a special raffle with amazing prizes provided by the lovely shop owners of Holt will raise money for the Community Centre Charity.

A lucky 100 people will receive a special bag of local goodies. Barclays will be present a er this event each week on Mondays and Wednesday 9am to 5pm to support customers.

Alongside the opening there will also be the Barclays Community Art Exhibi on in the Anwen and John Hurt Exhibi on Space, with many local ar sts coming together to showcase their work. The exhibi on will be free entry, and any sales will contribute 20% to the Charity.

He went to Greshams at 13 having won a scholarship, and in the holidays he cycled around the countryside which he grew to love, and knew his way around all the little lanes so never needed a sat nav

His work took him to Holland and Germany and Ghana and Lebanon He was in Beirut when the civil war started and eventually had to flee as his flat was being fired on

Saturday October 22nd

He leaves a daughter, Dr Catriona Jones, and a son Philip Jones as well as his beloved partner of 20 years, Valerie He will be missed beyond measure by them

The Shedders would be very happy to see you in their workshop with any suggestions or donations of materials. County Councillor Report for Holt Division

from County Councillor Eric Vardy Change in Adult Social Services Privacy Notice

Norfolk County Council Adult Social Services is changing its privacy notice so that it can better use data to help identify those who need support

It means combining different sources of data to help identify needs and risks, allowing the council to better focus its services to those in need

Currently, the council only uses its own collected data to identify service need, but the change will mean pooling that data with census information, survey data and information from other local bodies Adult Social Services will use the data to understand the needs of different areas and forecast where additional resources and services may be required

We may also use a computer algorithm to analyse this data to create a profile of who is most likely to need help and what that might look like, such as pinpointing who might be most likely to have a fall The computer algorithm cannot make any decisions and any suggestions will always be reviewed by an appropriately qualified member of staff

The use of data in this way will also not replace the council’s duty to complete an individual Care Act assessment These assessments will continue to be carried out by a trained worker

Jubilee Trees for Norfolk Scheme

I have written about this previously but as we are now quickly approaching the tree planting season, I thought it would be helpful to repeat

We are honouring the Queen's Platinum Jubilee year with our Jubilee Trees for Norfolk offer The scheme supports our 1 Million Trees for Norfolk initiative and The Queen's Green Canopy Our aim is to create a legacy to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s dedicated service over the past 70 years and as a memorial to her great reign The scheme gives people in Norfolk the chance to apply for tree packs that are up to 50% off their original cost We hope it will mark such a significant year by giving Norfolk 40,000 more trees in our

gardens and green spaces and make it a more vibrant place for our wildlife and people. We've funded this scheme alongside the Government's Trees Outside Woodland project There is an application process because we want to make sure all trees are being planted in the right place and have the best chance of survival Applications will close when all trees have been allocated

Who can apply

Anyone in Norfolk can apply for the scheme For example, you might be an individual resident, landowner, part of a community group or business

You need to make sure you either:

Own the land you plan to plant on Have land management responsibility or have landowner permission

The location of your trees is important You must be able to confirm you have the space for the trees The application form has an interactive map so you can mark where you'll plant them

You can apply as part of a residents’ association if you want to divide the bundle between different sites Or you might want to divide a pack between you and your neighbours or another group For example, if you don’t have enough room in your garden Again, you'll need to specify in your application where you're planning to plant each tree

If you are applying on behalf of a group, let us know in your application form

You should not separate orchard packs They have been carefully selected to have partner trees to help with pollination

Cabinet to Consider Further Savings to Address Budget Gap

I have included this report as you have a right to know the issues facing Norfolk County Council in these testing times I much prefer to report on how much better we are serving our communities but sometimes being a Councillor means making difficult decisions

The county council faces “very significant challenges and enormous uncertainty” as it continues work to bridge a £60 million budget gap, a report reveals.

Norfolk County Council says that “very severe headwinds” such as inflation and cost of living will “inevitably serve to increase the size of the budget gap”

In July, the county council announced the first £13 million of savings to meet a £60 million budget gap next year Further proposals will be considered by cabinet in October

The report says the council has identified further savings, which take the total to £32 5 million

It says:

Many elements of the budget remain unknown and “intensive work therefore continues to identify further savings”

There is a “significant risk that the council will be obliged to consider reductions in service levels”

It is “critical” that the council continues to lobby the Government and MPs for “adequate and sustainable funding for Norfolk”

The latest proposals, totalling £19 5 million, include:

£11 7 million from adult social services

£1 8 million from children’s services

£2 9 million from community and environmental services

£0 05 million from strategy and transformation

£0 03 million from governance

£3 1 million from finance and commercial services

The same meeting will consider an update on a strategic review of the council, to improve the way it operates and save between £15 million and £20 million Once detailed proposals are developed and checked, they will be added to the budget

The new Cromer hospital which opened in 2012 was funded by legacies from Sagle Bernstein, whose sister was cared for by the hospital, and former patient Phyllis Cox, who was so impressed with the care she received there in the 1950s, made arrangements for the hospital to receive her £1.4m estate. Her husband had passed away before her and they did not have any children

Sagle Bernstein lived in Cromer with her sister Muriel Thoms, and left £11 4m as a thank you for the care Mrs Thoms received at the hospital before she died in 1998

Charitable gifts are a great option for those without close family

If you no longer have any close family or friends, you might not want your money to end up with distant relatives you never speak to or see If you find yourself in this situation, a gift to charity could have more meaning to you Making a will in which you clearly set out your wishes is the only way to ensure that any charities can benefit from your estate If you die without a will then the predetermined intestacy

In Sagle Bernstein’s case, her sizeable donation was made to Cromer Hospital for the general benefit of Cromer and its residents The sisters are remembered at the hospital with the minor injuries unit (MIU) being named after Mrs Bernstein and the day procedure unit after Mrs Thoms Paintings by Mrs Bernstein are also hung in the new building The Audiology Unit on the first floor has been named after Phyllis Cox

The effect of charitable giving on inheritance tax

For many, tax saving is not the key consideration for leaving sums to charity, but it is usually a welcome side effect

Any gifts you leave to charity in your will pass free of inheritance tax, as charities count as exempt beneficiaries This reduces the value of your estate by the amount of the gift before any tax free allowances are taken into account, leaving a smaller pot to fall subject to inheritance tax

In addition, if you leave 10 per cent or more of your estate to charity the remainder benefits from

a reduced inheritance tax rate, meaning a greater share for your other beneficiaries

Dear Friends,

As autumn leaves fall and as one of the driest and warmest summers, which broke the highest recorded temperature in the UK becomes a memory, we continue to reflect on what it means to live with a changing climate

Since registering as an “Eco church,” members of our congregations have been reviewing how we can care for the natural world around us, both cooperately and personally. From introducing bees, bird boxes and bugs hotels into our churchyards, sowing wild flowers and generally better managing our green spaces and buildings for wildlife and the environment, to engaging with the wider community and encouraging people to do their bit to reduce their own carbon footprint we have been working towards a bronze award In recognition of what has been achieved we have been awarded this bronze award and congratulations must go to all those who are involved in raising awareness and keeping environmental issues on the agenda

Therefore, I would like to invite you a forum to hear and question what others have to say about the challenges of living with a changing climate One of the key note speakers is the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham Usher who is also the lead Bishop in the Church of England for environmental issues. Other speakers will include, Enid Barron, former member of General Synod, and something of an “eco granny,” and David Gillam, a member of Extinction Rebellion

The forum is open to anyone who is interested in how we cope with the challenges of a changing climate and what we can do to help protect the planet on which we live

Treehouse Café Celebrates Third Year

This month marks three years of The Treehouse Cafe!

October marks three years since we signed the lease to turn our Children’s Centre into our vision for a cafe that would be open for all, a place for people to come and be together, a place for friends to meet and children to play. Three years of ups and downs, three years of pandemics and lockdowns When we took the leap of faith to approach the council about using the space, we could never have foreseen how things would change for our plans, our visitors and ourselves For two mums with little to no business knowledge, but a stubborn drive to make sure that our community has continued access to valuable resources it has certainly been a journey.

With people facing more and more challenges, our resolve is still as strong to give people a warm, friendly and non judgemental place to come and just be We want to expand our range of groups to ensure that there is something to interest everyone and opportunities to learn and develop, in an inclusive way.

To allow us to do this we need extra hands in our cafe It ’s not only the source of fabulous coffee and delicious cakes (all hand baked, on site by our volunteer bakers) but also the only revenue of income to pay our rent and ever increasing utility bills

Our volunteers are the most remarkable team and highly valued We are looking to expand the team for most days, especially Monday, Wednesday and Friday Jobs would include serving customers, making coffee, washing up, cleaning, chatting with customers and generally putting a smile on people’s faces

Morning and afternoon shifts are available, and times can be flexible to suit your requirements

Our team is happy, friendly and nurturing and you would be welcomed with open arms

The money raised in Paul's memory has been split equally between Holt & District Dementia Support Group (The Poppy Cafe) and Glaven Caring Both groups helped both Paul and I during the most difficult time in our lives and made our lives bearable

Weybourne WI ‘Say Cheese’

Celia Howe, President, welcomed 26 members and 3 visitors to the village hall on Wednesday, 7th September, for the meeting of Weybourne WI

Our speaker was Charlie Hodson, owner of Hodson & Co, The Cheese Room and Delicatessen in Aylsham Charlie had brought along a wonderful display of products to illustrate his talk He began by describing his early life in France, where he learnt to cook as a young boy He later moved to East Dereham with his parents Following unsuccessful periods at Agricultural College and in the Royal Marines, he decided to move to London and train to be a chef. After working abroad for a while, he moved back to the UK and bought pubs, restaurants and a hotel. He made the decision to close his businesses just before the first lockdown

Following a period of ill health, he opened the Cheese Room in August 2020 and Hodson & Co has developed into a very successful business since then He stocks a wide variety of local products, and he said his aim is to showcase how amazing Norfolk produce is One of his specialities is to construct a wedding cake from rounds of cheese and he demonstrated this to us, using a wooden board as a base with fresh flowers, dried orange slices and raffia as decoration. It was very effective. Members then sampled a smoked brie, which was delicious!

Charlie is passionate about providing a great service to the local community and stressed the importance of using High Street shops, to stop them gradually disappearing

Pumpkin Traybake

Ever wondered what to do with all that pumpkin flesh you scoop out when carving your Halloween pumpkin? Well, here’s the answer make some cake to hand round on Halloween night! This is a quick and simple traybake with a touch of warming spice to enjoy whilst waiting for the trick or treaters.

Ingredients

300g self raising flour

300g soft brown sugar

3 teaspoons ground mixed spice

2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda

175g sultanas

4 eggs, beaten

200g butter, melted

zest of 1 orange + 1 tablespoon of juice

500g pumpkin flesh, grated

(For the topping)

200g cream cheese at room temperature

85g soft butter

100g icing sugar

Zest of 1 orange + juice of ½ orange

Method

Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/Gas 4

Line a 20x30cm baking tin with baking parchment

Going Back to my Roots

We are all being told to eat healthily, eat the rainbow, eat 5 a day, but budget must factor into our eating habits too Adding in extra veg need not cost the earth if you shop clever and use seasonal veg, and you can easily add in extra fibre and even protein by keeping tins of beans and pulses on the shelf; include a tin of green lentils with your bolognaise, add extra mixed beans to chilli, pop in some haricot beans with your soup A really easy way to get more veg with your roast dinner or sausage and mash is by adding veg to the mashed potatoes, think root veg like parsnips, celeriac, swede and carrot, all of which are reasonably priced at this time of year. I’ve used bacon, but the recipe below is easily adaptable to any protein, so you could use any cooked meat, corned beef, bacon or even tinned fish such as tuna or salmon If you’re vegan, use baked or fried smoked tofu It makes the most of seasonal veg, with a base of potatoes which are reasonably priced at any time of year, and you can use any herb that you fancy. Adjust the amount of veg according to how many people you have to feed or make more and freeze in portions to reheat in the microwave, making your cooking session much more energy efficient

Autumn Scramble

Smoked bacon, finely chopped

1 large white onion, chopped finely A little oil

2 cloves of garlic, finely chopped Potatoes, peeled Celeriac, peeled Parsnip, peeled Carrot

Oregano, or herb of your choice

A little grated cheese to top

Mix the flour, sugar, mixed spice, bicarb and sultanas in a large bowl, in another bowl whisk together the eggs, melted butter, zest and juice and tip into the dry ingredients, add the grated pumpkin and mix thoroughly Spoon into the baking tin, level and bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and springy to the touch

For the topping, beat together the cream cheese, soft butter, orange juice and 1 teaspoon of the juice until smooth When the cake comes out of the oven, leave for 5 minutes then prick all over with a skewer and drizzle over the re maining orange juice When the cake is completely cold spread the cream cheese topping over the entire cake and sprinkle orange zest over the cake to decorate (Pumpkin sprinkles or any other decoration you choose would be fine too)

Fry the bacon with the onion in a little oil until crispy, adding in the garlic for the last few minutes and being careful not to burn it Meanwhile, cut your potatoes into large chunks, and all the other veg smaller so that they cook at the same time, and put into a large pan of water Bring to the boil, turn down and simmer until the veg are soft, then drain and mash with a little butter and milk, stirring in the herbs and bacon/onion/garlic until all combined. Place in an oven proof dish, sprinkle over the grated cheese and put into a preheated oven on 180° for about 20 minutes until piping hot throughout Serve with greens or baked beans

My name is Mary Robinson some years ago my husband died, and it was a somewhat turbulent time for all of us and it was when I was at my very lowest that I put pen to paper. It was meant to be a diary for my children of my life because I thought how many children actually know what their parents previously did and so my book was born you could say. It was never meant to be seen by anybody but them and each poem happened to be in verse, and so one poem became two and so the book grew. My daughter constantly kept telling me to write and keep writing as she loved hearing what seemingly funny things had happened to her mother. I did eventually send it off to a publisher who has published it. The main poem that got the ball rolling I guess is this one......

We are now in a credit crunch - the telly says it all. With growing unemployment and prices that will fall. But every day it worries me, it’s like a massive stitch

I'm fed up being poor- if only I were rich.

I lay in bed at night and think - what is there I can do That'll bring me in some money and stop me feeling blue.

I am a Norland Nanny, and children I do love, But recently my life has changed-- is there a god above?

So with pen poised and fire lit, I slowly start to write, Of things that happen every day, that give me strength to fight. So I’m hoping that you read my poems and treat them like an itch, That constantly need scratching and they'll one day make me rich.

The poems range from wallpapering to visiting the crab factory in Cromer, and, like the book says, it’s all about me, so see how much of it relates to what a lot of people go through. It’s just normal everyday life to me that I happen to be able to put down on paper in my way.

The September meeting started with a minutes silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II. Firework Fears!

We all know how stressful the firework season can be for our pets so here at Toll Barn Vets we have a few helpful tips to help keep pets as calm as possible Animals have very sensitive hearing and loud bangs can be painful whilst the flashing lights can be scary Always keep dogs and cats indoors during fireworks and make sure dogs are walked earlier in the day to avoid being out when fireworks are let off Many pets go missing at this time of year when they get scared by fireworks so make sure all pets are easily identified with a collar and tag or microchip (with up to date contact details) so that they can be reunited with you if they get scared and manage to run off

It can help to build your pet a safe den and keep windows, doors and curtains closed to minimise noise as much as possible Some pets will find it comforting to have an alternative noise so keeping the radio or television on can help to reduce awareness of the sound of fireworks Pets will often look to you for reassurance during stressful situations so try to act as normally as possible and make sure not to tell pets off if they are behaving in a stressed manner during fireworks. It is also important to reward calm and relaxed behaviour with cuddles and treats! There are also several medicines and techniques which can be used to reduce anxiety around firework season Pheromone based and natural calming products come in several varieties including plug in diffusers, tablets, liquids, collars and sprays. These products can help pets feel more relaxed and calm within the environment and should ideally be started at least 48 hours (preferably longer) before fireworks are due to start Noise phobia CDs are also available and are designed to gradually reduce sensitivity to loud sounds over a long period of time in the run up to Firework Night

This is Stella, she was found at side of the road when her finder witnessed her being hit by a car, unfortunately although she has made a full recovery, she is now unable to curl up into a tight ball which makes her very vulnerable to predators, and cold weather The good thing is that she is going to an enclosed garden where she can live a more natural life without danger and will be able to be monitored in case any problems should arise.

If you see a hedgehog out during the day, they are usually in trouble, please pick them up and pop in a box before seeking help I have had 2 incidents in one week of finders ringing me and the hedgehogs had disappeared and not been found again One was seen surrounded by flies which is a sign of some kind of injury, so the prognosis for that one is not good We will be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Norwich Road, North Walsham NR28 0DR for advice and fund raising on Saturday 15th October, 10am

guinea pigs as well as birds during this stressful season These pets can also get easily scared and, if possible, these pets should be moved into a quiet room or shed If this is not possible, cages should be covered to reduce the sound of the fireworks and turned to face a wall so the firework lights are less visible It is essential to ensure enough ventilation still remains underneath the cover Make sure pets have enough bedding to burrow and hide in should they feel stressed

Father Peter, 32, grew up in Cambridge and has a background in Engineering and Electronics and worked in London before following his vocation and studying in Rome for 8 years Father Peter is looking forward to working with his Parish and the local community as well as other local churches and clergy. As a passionate musician, Father Peter is especially pleased to be in North Norfolk, a part of the country with such a rich musical tradition

Arriving in Sheringham having completed post graduate studies of Theology in Rome, Father Peter is currently working on a PhD, researching novel ways for Christian believers to understand their relationship with humanity ’s future He hopes his study might offer opportunities

The Hidden World Beneath Holt

The Holt Society launch of The Hidden World Beneath Holt project on

September 23rd saw members gathered at St Andrews Church Hall for an introduction by Chair Keith Gosden who was delighted to announce that there were already 22 sites involved This initiative is focussed within the Holt conservation zone and is researching both commercial and domestic properties and the physical and social history of the rich range of cellar spaces identified. Senior Family Director who kindly accompanied us Patrick Sewell Head of the Wine Department lead the 2 tours and took us down into 3 interlocking cellars each of different date and all in current use From the main and most recently restored cellar a narrow and low short passage led into the oldest Here natural light from a glass grill set into the pavement outside the front of the store, allowed us to see the surprise of a very rare fern, carefully protected, flourishing in an aperture A further aperture under another pavement grill in the third cellar boasted a long delivery slide still in use today The variety of the structures of each space and their material composition indicated a complex architectural history while remnants of hanging systems a varied history of usage in their ambient temperature We could stand there and easily imagine staff in the past coming down the stairs to hang candleholders and oil lamps on hooks while collecting the grocery items and stored meats and diary produce for sale in the shop

Bebe Takes Full Advantage at Swim Gala

Bebe King, of North Walsham, took full advantage at the "Summer Splash” gala held at the UEA Sports Park hosted by Gt Yarmouth Swimming Club. The 11 year old entered seven events and medalled in all as the North Norfolk Vikings competed in respective age group categories

In her first event, Bebe demonstrated her all round ability on all strokes when she took a silver in the 100m Individual Medley with 1:41 8: This proved to be a fore runner for what was to come. It was her powerful, nonchalant, longer strokes where she took full advantage. This style of technique took her on to further success when she won the 25m freestyle in just 17 62 and victory again in the 25m breaststroke when she went 25 95 Her third gold was the 25m backstroke when she touched in 21:89 and to conclude her seven medal haul, she came home first in 21 89 over the same distance on backstroke to clinch her fourth gold Reuben Seaman collected three more gold medals. The 10 year old dominated the 100m Individual Medley finishing in 1:44.03 but in his 50m freestyle, he was pushed all the way by Charlie Pickering of Great Yarmouth, and it was only the electronic timing which

could separate them as Reuben touched in 41 29 from Charlie's 41 43 respectively

North Norfolk Vikings also won another hat trick of golds, this time through another 10 year old, Toby Caufield: all over 50m In the freestyle 45.01, backstroke 51.12 and breaststroke 1:00.15. However, Toby was not finished there he won a bronze in the 50m butterfly with his 59 60

The gold medals continued to be achieved and two more followed by two more 10 year olds Lily Dear in the 50m freestyle with 37 63 when she defeated a field of eighteen swimmers and Grace Parker winning the 25m butterfly event in 20 65 in a close fingertip finish beating seven competitors Meanwhile, both 12 year old Bailee Beighton and 13 year old Razvan Platon won consolation medals in respective events

At the conclusion of the gala, coach John Holden said "I was delighted for the swimmers who gained just reward for all their hard work and commitment. Every team member came in the top three at least twice Their technique is also improving as our younger swimmers are enjoying the experience of competing.

Hunworth Common Under Threat

I write to inform readers of a proposal by telecoms company Cornerstone to install a thirty metre telecoms mast and base station on Hunworth Common with no viable alternatives offered to the community or open consultation with the residents of the area

Barely 7 acres, but packed with a diverse range of plants, trees and wildlife, many species indicating the ancient nature of the land this tiny area of common land has not been affected by farming, industry or the modern world is designated a County Wildlife Site and is within the Hunworth conservation area

Visited by villagers and countless people from the surrounding area, Hunworth Common remains one of only a few sites in the area where people can freely access nature with no restrictions, to wander and linger, to picnic, to pick fruit or play and build dens as has been the way for centuries

The imposition of this mast and its associated ground works would devastate the site, ecologically and visually Straddling an area where this spring a conservation group planted three hundred trees, provided by North Norfolk District Council, as a small mammal, reptile and insect refuge the mast structure would be starkly and unavoidably visible to anyone walking on the common from any direction

This plan sets a worrying precedent introducing industrial structures here and other areas of common land, especially as there is a stated likelihood of expansion and mast sharing by the company

Better telecoms connectivity is of course in the interests of all in the area

but should not be at the expense of such a rare natural resource especially when there are many other more suitable sites that have not been properly considered by the telecoms company and others involved

Our common land must be protected from such exploitation, and I urge you to contact the local MP (Duncan Baker) and councillor (Andrew Brown) to express your concern over this ill conceived proposal, press for it to be rejected and a proper and open and inclusive process take place to establish a more suitable site.

To the casual eye, there is nothing here, but they couldn’t be more wrong…. If this proposed telecoms site were to go ahead this view would be obscured by a 10 foot high fence, a mast, and the trees and flora would be dug up and replaced with a concrete pad several metres deep.

A mixed year globally so far, including summer heat spikes in the Northern Hemisphere and record cold temperatures tumbling in the Southern Hemisphere October is likely to be a repeat of September which was quite mixed, even having high pressure in close attendance, it ’s position allowed much colder air to come down the east coast which not only produced some rain but certainly subdued temperatures November, because the tropical Atlantic has been much quieter than predicted, there is a chance that high pressure might give us a reasonable month, otherwise changeable. The Pumpkin House is back for October and to celebrate 5 years we have gone pumpkin crazy!

New for 2022, we have moved location slightly so it ’s much easier to access with lots more free parking In addition to the wonderful wooden house decorated with over 1,000 pumpkins, we have an array of family friendly activities and Halloween fun

Visitors can now park nearby and view the pumpkin totem poles, miniature and big pumpkin house, listen to the musical organ and play on the hay bale towers all for FREE

1940s Weekend 2022

Sheringham, Holt and Weybourne saw the long awaited return of the 1940s weekend on the 17th and 18th of September.

Sheringham High Street was transformed with taped up windows, Union Jack bunting, and stunning displays of period clothes and ephemera Parking was scarce, but vintage buses, working as a park and ride service from Cookie’s Field, offered the opportunity for many more to attend the event There was a costume parade at 4pm on the Saturday.

Thousands of attendees showed up to the weekend appropriately attired A dizzying variety of civilian and military outfits were on display: Navy Commanders, and Army Officers in full military regalia, men in tweed suits, bow ties and fedoras, dames complete with victory rolls, pearls and A line skirts and of course Rosie the Riveter look a likes with jumpsuits and red spotted bandanas.

Across the towns, 1940s period music from performers such as The Skyliner Big Band, The Knightingales and Sarah Mai resounded throughout the weekend Weybourne Station provided live music from The Swingtones and others Weybourne also offered period food and drink at the Station Buffett and exhibited a variety of military camps At the exhibition site next to Holt Station visitors could feast their eyes on dozens of military vehicles, vintage cars, and of course the full size Spitfire replica

This year ’s event had an unusual poignancy due to the recent passing of the Queen, and there were many sincere tributes to the late monarch on display across the towns.

North Norfolk Railway once again organised the event, and made sure that activities ran in cooperation with volunteers and local councils

Steam trains ran every half hour, and conveyed thousands of passengers over the two days The event has come a long way since it was debuted as a one off event over 20 years ago, and certainly shows no signs of slowing down.

Blakeney Rowing Club Takes Part in The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Row

This year ’s Great River Race, held on Saturday 10th September 2022 on the Thames, was organised differently to provide a fitting tribute to our late Queen. The event became The Queen Elizabeth Memorial Row Humphrey Borgnis, Blakeney Rowing Club

Captain, gives a clear description of rowing from Millwall in the Isle of Dogs to Ham near Richmond some 22 miles upstream:

This year it was decided that the event would be a memorial procession and not a race, and the atmosphere was memorable. All boats attached a black ribbon to their flag The rowing was much less aggressive than usual We passed all the London landmarks: Tower Bridge, Westminster, up to Putney, Kew and then Richmond before arriving at Ham about 3 and a bit hours later It was a moving experience and new friends were made especially with the Dutch St Ayles Gig crowd with their 5 boats Hopefully we will be able to visit them next year Well rowed Adrian, Tom, Helen, Anna and Carol ”

Next year ’s Thames Great River Race will be on the 16th September, 2023 It ’s always an amazing gathering of all sorts of traditional rowing boats Special thanks to Humphrey Borgnis who towed the skiff Bluejacket to London before rowing the course as part of a crew comprising rowers from Blakeney and King ’s Lynn

At the age of 90, Dereck Smith is finally hanging up his boots as a walk leader for Sheringham Ramblers after 25 years’ service to the group following his retirement with wife Margaret to Sheringham

Over this time, he has been a committee member and a willing volunteer to help out at social events He has led over 150 walks of 10 miles or more and it is only recently that he has reduced these to a more sedate 5 miles! However, just a few weeks ago, he ticked off an item on his bucket list, as part of his 90th birthday celebration, and walked out to Blakeney Point and back a distance of 8 5 miles with a couple of rambling friends.

The other Sunday, Sheringham Ramblers had a local walk in Sheringham Park followed by their annual BBQ at Upper Sheringham Village Hall with over 35 members enjoying the food This was the perfect occasion to recognize Dereck’s service and Stuart Meakin, the group treasurer, on behalf of the Committee, presented him with a dinner voucher, a bottle of Gin, Campari and Vermouth to make his favourite negroni cocktail, some wine & beer and the all important bar of dark chocolate Dereck expressed his thanks and although he will not be walk leading, he will continue to walk with our Ramblers group Sheringham Ramblers meet on alternate Wednesdays and Sundays for walks of 5 miles and 5 to 9 miles respectively Further information can be found at: www.ramblers.org.uk/sheringham district

What a memorable day!

Sunday 18th September saw 10 fishermen gather together with the very generous Billy Wright owner of Bodhams, Willow Lakes to hold a memorial fishing match Ben Wade would only be proud of. Simon Wade (Ben’s father) with daughter Charlotte and step mum Nicola were very humbled to have the amazing support from true friends:
