County Councillor Report for Holt Division

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

Inspectors have praised Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, judging the authority as “good” and highlighting “exemplary” and “exceptional” areas of practice

In an inspection report recently published Ofsted said “significant improvements” had been made in services for children and their families, recognising stable and determined leadership, investment in services, and “compassionate, warm and committed workers and carers ”

Inspectors said children’s “voices, wishes and feelings shine brightly” in case records and described children and young people’s participation as a strength of the authority

The report follows a two-week inspection in November, the first full inspection of its kind since 2017, when Norfolk was judged as “requires improvement ”

Known as an Inspection of Local Authority Children’s Services (ILACS), the inspection looked at the support the council offers children and families from before birth through to adult life The judgement relates to all services from early help and prevention to more specialist support for families with the greatest needs

In the report, inspectors said:

“Significant improvements have been made in services for children and families since the last inspection in 2017

“A stable and determined children’s senior leadership team, endorsed by councillors, has been innovative, establishing a shared practice culture and new ways of working which have transformed services ”

Inspectors said that “the vast majority of children in Norfolk receive high quality services and have good relationships with their social workers, which is leading to continued improvements in their circumstances ”

Ofsted described support for care leavers as demonstrating “exemplary practice” and said children in care are provided with “exceptional services ”

In essence Ofsted has recognised the huge progress we have made in recent years, which is testament to the tremendous effort of all those working across the service I want to thank all of our staff and carers for their dedication and commitment to Norfolk’s children and young people and for the role they have played in this Ofsted judgement

Ofsted said that adoption services remained a strength, independent reviewing officers are “strong advocates for children” and planning and decision making for babies needing early protection was a “particular strength ”

They also highlighted the “effective support” of the Targeted Youth Support Service, in diverting children away from criminal exploitation and the skilful work of the social workers taking calls where there were concerns about children (known as the Children’s Advice and Duty Services)

Inspectors described the Executive Director of Children’s Services as an “exemplary leader” and recognised the strength of partnership working in the county

They said further improvement was needed in the response to children aged 16 and 17 who present as homeless; the recognition and response to neglect, and the support and decision-making for children placed with family and friends

Sara Tough, Executive Director of Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council, said:

“This report reflects the huge effort of all of our staff in improving services for children and young people in the county It has taken a huge amount of

work and has come amidst a global pandemic and when public services are under significant pressure which makes it all the more impressive.

“This report shows that outcomes for children are at the heart of everything we do and the work we are doing is helping to improve the lives of children and families across the county Ofsted recognised our commitment to participation, our efforts to listen to children and young people and the strength of our social work practice, which is based on developing strong and effective relationships with children, families and our partners

“We are ambitious for every child and young person and will continue to build on this positive inspection outcome, to help make Norfolk a county where all children and young people can flourish.”

Norfolk to benefit from new Family Hubs and Start for Life Funding

Children and parents in Norfolk are to benefit from a new cradle to career approach to family support

The government has just announced that Norfolk County Council will be one of 75 local authorities receiving some of the £302m new Family Hubs and Start for Life funding

It means the county will receive approximately £6m to further develop its prevention and early help services for families with children and young people up to the age of 19 (25 if they have special educational needs and disabilities)

This is not about introducing a new service or opening new buildings but to allow the county to further develop support for families Using a whole family approach, the Family Hubs network will give families a single access point to support services that are integrated across health (physical and mental health) and social care as well as voluntary and community organisations and education.

Whilst there will be at least seven physical Family Hub sites in existing community buildings, which families will be able to walk into, services will be delivered largely on an outreach basis The Family Hub approach will bring together a wide range of services so that families can access support in the spaces and places that they live and visit, such as libraries and community buildings

The Family Hubs network will provide simple access to ‘Start for Life’ services, providing the best support for babies in the first 1,001 critical days from conception to the age of two, setting them up to maximise their potential for lifelong emotional and physical wellbeing including:

• Perinatal mental health and parent-infant relationships support for families who are expecting a baby or have a baby under the age of two

• Infant feeding support services

• Parenting support for parents of children aged 0-2

• Home learning environment support for parents of children aged 3-4

The County Council want Norfolk’s children to flourish and have the very best start in life, no matter their background or circumstances, so we’re really pleased to have been identified as one of the authorities to benefit from this programme Family Hubs can provide families with advice and support across a whole range of family issues spanning the 0-19 (25 with SEND age range) Family Hubs will enable the join up of different agencies supporting families in the county, including from across social care, health, education, and the voluntary sector

“Family Hubs will support all families across the county, with a focus on reducing inequalities in health and education outcomes for babies, children, and families, which includes support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, and support in preventing parental conflict. These are areas where we know the earlier we can help families, the greater the impact on children’s futures ”

Digital Assets and your Will

The use of digital assets and online access to assets has grown significantly in recent years – most of us have access to emails, photos stored online and maybe even social media accounts The value of digital assets can vary, and many people think that they hold sentimental value – it is therefore essential to ensure that you include your digital assets in your Will so that you can make certain they are passed on to your beneficiaries

What are digital assets?

Although there is no set definition of what is and is not a digital asset, they tend to range from tangible assets like phones and laptops to non-tangible assets like your PayPal accounts, cryptocurrency, photos stored online, emails, and social media accounts

Digital assets can be valuable in a monetary and/or sentimental sense

Do you need to include digital assets in your will?

If you want to ensure that your digital assets go to the person you would like, it is crucial to include them in your will. If they are not specifically given to a beneficiary, they will remain part of your residuary estate

Another reason to include digital assets in your will is to ensure that your Executors are aware of them Many people fail to include them in their will and they are then forgotten about If you have a digital asset that is valuable to you, you should draw it to your executors’ attention to ensure that they are able to access your account to retrieve information and/or close your accounts

For digital assets with monetary value, your executors will need to have access details to ensure they can verify the assets and establish the value for tax purposes, as your Executors will have to give details of all your assets (including digital assets) when providing this information to HMRC and the Probate Registry when applying for a Grant of Probate

Keeping an up-to-date record of your online accounts with access details is recommended as there are often difficulties for executors when it comes to accessing digital assets

Tangible assets like laptops will be considered as part of one’s personal effects in your Estate however this does not mean that everything stored on your laptop is automatically included unless specifically given to a beneficiary

Digital assets such as emails and photos might not be readily accessible to your Executors, therefore if you want these to pass to a specific beneficiary it is recommended to leave instructions as to how to gain access to them

Social media accounts prove difficult to access following the account holder ’s death and the requirements vary between providers so it is recommended that you consider this as fulfilling the requirements can be time-consuming

If you want to leave any of your digital assets to a particular person, you should include instructions in your will (or in a letter with your will)

What happens if you do not include digital assets in your will?

Without a will your digital assets will pass to the person as per the rules of intestacy There is also a risk of your non-tangible digital assets being overlooked

The February Festival of Crime

The third annual Holt Film Festival taking this year ’s theme of crime fiction was held at The Venue in mid-February Best-selling authors, in genre of crime fiction, were included in the programme, to be interviewed, take questions from the audience, and have their favourite film shown This innovative approach treated the audience to the innermost workings of the writer ’s craft, what motivated them to start writing and future plans The choice of the author ’s favourites also made for a diverse and exciting range of films.

Sunday morning was devoted to children with a free showing of “ The Wrong Trousers” starring Wallace and Gromit What a great introduction to the pleasures of watching films on a big screen and being part of a large audience

The Venue is an ideal location for the annual festival, right in the heart of Holt, with excellent facilities and supported by fantastic volunteers Drinks and large variety of food was available throughout the festival in the bar This gave us an opportunity to chat and relax between showings Included this year, supported by the Holt Bookshop, was a range of crime fiction books available for purchase. The guest authors were signing their books giving us a unique keepsake from the event Clearly, lots of very hard work went into this year ’s festival All those involved should feel immensely proud of their achievement, the festival was a huge success We should all look forward, with eager anticipation, to a similar event next year Ideas for next year ’s theme are already being discussed. The festival is growing in stature year-onyear and is a key element of Holt ’s community It should be supported and enjoyed by us all

Budgens to Re-open

A rebuilt supermarket that has been at the heart of community life in Holt, Norfolk, is set to re-open next month

Less than three years after the CT Baker Budgens store in Holt was devastated by fire on 20th June 2020, the store will once again serve shoppers essential services, all with a modern new look

The new CT Baker Budgens of Holt store, located on Kerridge Way, will officially launch at 10am on Thursday 30th March with a day of treats and surprises for shoppers including goodie bags to the value of £30 for the first 1,000 customers, plus the chance to win your shopping, and free tastings of some of the delicious local produce CT Baker Budgens of Holt is known for

Following the fire in 2020, the local community was left in shock having lost such an important facility in the town Reacting quickly, the CT Baker Group helped to restore a lifeline of key services to the residents of Holt, introducing a pop-up Post Office at Bakers & Larners department store

Work also soon began on a temporary Budgens store in the car park next to where the fire had destroyed the original building, with the replacement store opening in November 2020

Havercroft Construction, principal contractors for the build, began work in November 2021 and confirmed the store is now entering its final phase with the fit-out works due towards the end of February The building will then be handed over to the CT Baker Budgens team who will undertake the internal shopfitting, bringing the rebuild to completion

The construction project faced many challenges due to the impact of global events; the war in Ukraine impacted the availability of many raw materials, and the Suez Canal blockage also caused supply disruption In addition to the ongoing effect of COVID-19, extended material lead times impacted the original timescale immensely Despite these challenges, the construction team supply chain remained committed and used local many companies and personnel to assist with the delivery of various works

Branded as CT Baker Budgens of Holt, the new shop will now bring a permanent replacement as a modern grocery store delivering vital groceries to residents in the heart of North Norfolk New features of the CT Baker Budgens of Holt premises will include self-serve checkouts, refill stations, and a brand-new loyalty scheme

Store manager, Sandra Taylor-Meeds, commented: “We are thrilled to be opening our new grocery store and can’t wait to start serving the people of Holt in our new surroundings This shop has been such an important asset for the residents here and the launch of this new building is sure to make a real difference ”

Carl Milton, Managing Director of the CT Baker Group, added: “Since joining the CT Baker Group in 2007, Budgens of Holt ’s values of local life have never been so important We’ve continued our long-standing relationships with Norfolk suppliers throughout our time at the pop-up store, and we look forward to showcasing them on our opening weekend. Our family business is now 253 years old and I believe our future is as just important as our rich history In addition to reducing the food miles from producer to plate, we have also carefully considered the technology and materials in each stage of the rebuild to help look after our future generations. I’m extremely proud of the team who has worked tirelessly on this project, and we look forward to reopening our doors to the community on March 30th ”

The temporary Budgens of Holt store will remain trading until 3pm on Wednesday 29th March ahead of the re-opening at 10am on Thursday 30th March

Dear Friends,

One year on and the war in Ukraine shows no signs of abating A conflict President Putin thought could be won in a few days continues to inflict unimaginable, pain, suffering, hardship, destruction and death on the lives of those who wage war on each other, and on the lives of millions of innocent people The cost of the war is huge and cannot be purely measured in financial terms; 18 million refugees, the majority of whom are in need of humanitarian aid, over 8000 civilians killed (but could be as high as 100,000) and 300,000 military personnel across both sides dead The effects of war are felt around the world and no one is immune from its impact

Once again aggression and war demonstrate what can happen when the lust for power, and self-advancement becomes the driving force of those in positions of power and authority. Their vision for good is replaced with illusions of self-fulfilment, self-power, and self-advancement and a total disregard for those who stand in their way War is surely a result not only of the evil that exists in our world, but also, albeit extreme, of what can happen when the human heart gives in to the temptation to prefer only self and the rejection of others and God

The holy season of Lent mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert during which he was tempted by the devil to pursue his own self advancement and through political power, world domination, rather than obey the will of His Father in heaven But by refusing to give into temptation and not reject God, Jesus shows us the reason he endured and resisted temptation and why he offered himself up to death on the cross; to destroy evil for our sake

At the centre of our Christian faith stands the cross, a symbol of suffering yet also one of victory. The cross of Christ bears witness to the triumph of love over hatred, light over darkness and life over death At the end of our journey through Lent and Holy Week comes resurrection and victory over evil! It is what we celebrate and proclaim. Evil can never win because love has triumphed

For many people, especially those feeling the effects of war, their experience of life will be more like Good Friday than Easter Day. But as we continue to extend a helping hand of aid and stand alongside them, we also continue to pray for them May the people of Ukraine and all who suffer in our world today, come to know, in our Lord’s death and resurrection, the victory over evil and experience both the peace and joy of Easter. Every blessing, Fr Howard

Noise Nuisance

Bus Stop Perfection

Dear Jo,

I am interested to know if any other Holt resident was affected by a low flying aircraft spiralling, circulating and diving over Holt on Tuesday 14th February at approx 4-20pm? It was a lovely, bright, clear afternoon, the plane very visible, shiney, silvery and a delta wing shape, I think? I do not know I cannot say how long it lasted It seemed an eternity I was in my garden at the time when the aircraft suddenly appeared, once it began circling the noise became indescribable, frightening even

We do have a problem with noise pollution over Holt from aircraft, however, this occasion was exceptional. What about farm animals? Pregnant ewes? Would they abort their young? Surely having to endure such a level of noise is totally wrong and out of order?

It should be addressed by the proper authorities on behalf of the residents of Holt

It ’s good to talk ...

Grieving can be such a lonely place Very little, if anything, prepares you for what follows the death of a loved one Once the funeral is over, it feels like everyone else’s life just goes back to normal while your life is anything but normal And, in truth, it will never be the same again Carol found herself in this position in lockdown Her husband had died just a few months earlier Fortunately, she discovered an on-line grief café run by The Good Grief Trust and started to realise the benefits of being with others who just ‘got ’ what grief is like It made such a difference that Carol wanted to find somewhere locally where people could meet in person and support each other

In December last year, Carol and Elena, Manager of the Holt Library, hosted the first Bereavement Café. It was such a success with those who attended that the café now runs on the third Monday of each month It is an informal, friendly group of people who meet to share their experiences and support each other The feedback has been really positive: ‘It ’s been so helpful to be able to put feelings into words and share our experiences’; ‘I’ve liked hearing how other people are dealing with their grief ’ ; ‘I’ve felt listened to without judgment ’ . ‘It ’s been good to share memories too’

So, if you’ve been bereaved, you can be sure of finding a warm welcome We meet on the third Monday of the month, 2pm at Holt Library Why not come and join us?

Dear Jo

A while ago I wrote a short article for the Holt Chronicle (October 2017) about the naming of the bus stops around Holt, Market Place Nothing matched: the name on the bus stop flag, the wayside timetables, the printed timetables and online timetables all varied

It has been agreed that the three stops are to be called: Holt Market Place Hospice Shop, Holt Market Place Bus Shelter Holt Market Place Feeney ’s Newsagents

As of 7 February 2023 I am happy to report that thanks to Holt Town Council, Norfolk County Council and Sanders Coaches Ltd the bus stop flags, the wayside timetables and the on line timetables all match perfectly!

Holt Probus Club

Members of Holt Probus Club were entertained at their February meeting by a brilliant talk from Steven Ashling about the North Norfolk Railway

Steven has been a director of North Norfolk Railway PLC for 20 years or more He has been a railway enthusiast since he was 9 years old and is presently employed as Train Driver Instructor for Greater Anglia

Involved with the North Norfolk Railway for over 30 years, he was the first to be married at Weybourne Station!

Steven outlined the history of the railways before the mid-20th century and described the chaos of competing railway companies and the tangle of small lines that resulted Much of which was ended when most of the lines were closed and some of the remainder became part of the British Rail network But from 1963, enthusiasts took over the track between Sheringham and Weybourne, later extended to Holt, and devoted huge amounts of work in developing the Railway we see today. Steven told how he had been the lead in projects including the relocation of Stalham Station to Holt, and the connection to the main line at Sheringham He is now leading an exciting project codenamed HIVE (Holt Interactive Visitor Experience) which is to provide an exhibition hall with Victorian street to house their museum collection with catering and retail space.

Blakeney Bar High Tides

An exciting forthcoming event on the Railway is the visit of the famous loco Tornado from 27th May to 4th June Visit the Railway ’s website at www.nnrailway.co.uk/tornado/ for details

Holt Probus Club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at The Venue in Holt and they are on the lookout to increase membership. Holt WI

A well-attended and busy meeting with one new visitor After business was discussed the Holt WI Annual General Meeting then took place with Coral Batchelor, WI advisor, on her last visit to Holt before moving away She was presented with a bouquet of flowers and the President thanked her for the advice and assistance she has given. The committee was duly elected with one new member and one member stepping down The President was re-elected by unanimous vote

Refreshments were followed by a talk from Michele Bishop of the North Norfolk Food Bank Quite an eye opener as to how much help is given to people in need. Instead of a speakers fee a large donation of supplies was made and members made their own individual donations

The meeting ended with the raffle Next month the talk will be on the work of the Magistrate so come along and learn something new, you will be made very welcome

We meet at the Venue, third Wednesday of the month, 2-4pm.

Sea Shanties Save Souls

The Blakeney Old Wild Rovers have raised over £24,000 for Wells-next-the-Sea lifeboat station

On Friday

17 February the Blakeney

Old Wild Rovers were invited for a tour of the new lifeboat station and viewed the station’s state of the art Shannon class Lifeboat, Duke of Edinburgh.

Everyone was in good spirits and there were lots of laughs and appreciation for their ongoing support and fundraising for Wells lifeboat station Gary Mears of The Old Wild Rovers said: ‘We are all based by the sea and have connections to the local lifeboat stations, Wells, Sheringham and Cromer, with some of the crew being great mates of ours, so the RNLI is a charity close to our hearts ’

Since 1999 the Blakeney Old Wild Rovers have been singing their way round Norfolk raising money for the RNLI and other charities close to their hearts. To date they have raised over £250,000, holding various events within the local community, and regularly supporting at lifeboat station events

On behalf of Wells RNLI Coxswain Nicky King said: ‘We are extremely grateful to the Blakeney Old Wild Rovers for all their hard work and continued support in raising funds for Wells lifeboat station We all appreciate the significant donations they have made to the RNLI

The RNLI as a charity relies on the kindness and generosity of people such as The Old Wild Rovers, and what better way to help our volunteer crew continue to be able to save lives at sea 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year, than with a sea shanty.’

Perfect Pie

Something magical happens when you roast vegetables; their flavour intensifies and sweetens, turning a boring veg into something sublime Squashes are notorious for being bland but roast them up and it ’s a whole other story Many people consider vegetables to be a side dish but cooked in the right way they become the star of the show and bought seasonally they are a very economical option I've included fennel here, but don’t worry if you can’t get it, the recipe works fine without it, but it can now be purchased in most supermarkets very reasonably I know some purists don’t like using Bisto, but personally I like to keep it handy as it ’s great for gravy and this sort of dish You can add a splash of white wine to the sauce if you want to jazz it up a little, but for a regular, family friendly dish I’ve left it out Most ready-made pastry is vegan, so if you use Alpro soya cream you can happily feed this to vegans, and the flavour is just as good

Roasted Celeriac and Butternut Squash Pie

Serves 4

1 large butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into chunks

1 celeriac, peeled and cut into chunks

Olive oil

1 onion, finely diced

1 leek, cut into half rounds

4 sticks celery, finely chopped

1 bulb fennel, finely chopped

1 punnet of chestnut mushrooms, quartered

2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped

Editor ’s Recipe

With Easter coming up, I thought this month I would give you a recipe that uses up leftovers but has a feeling of indulgence at the same time If you have made hot cross buns and have some left over these are perfect for this, which is a variation on bread-and-butter pudding No leftovers? I cheat and buy a pack of buns from the supermarket which will do just as well

Add in some eggs (not the Easter variety!) milk and a little cream and you are nearly done This pudding will easily serve 6 people

Hot Cross Bun Pudding

You will need a deep round baking dish

approx 25cm wide

Ingredients

200ml double cream

400ml whole milk

3 eggs

75g castor sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tbsp Cointreau (optional)

zest of 1 orange

50g butter, softened

7 or 8 hot cross buns sliced in half

4 tbsp marmalade

Method

Generous tsp dried thyme

A little Bisto or cornflour

Small carton cream (or soya cream if vegan)

1 sheet ready rolled puff pastry

Start by tossing your squash and celeriac cubes in a little olive oil, season and roast for around 30 minutes on 190° until starting to brown and cooked through Meanwhile, gently fry the onion, leek, celery and fennel in a little olive oil for 10 mins until softening, then add in the mushrooms and garlic Season with salt and pepper and the dried thyme and cook gently for a further 5 minutes Add in a little boiling water to form a sauce, and thicken with either a little Bisto or cornflour, and stir to combine it all Pour in some cream and check your seasoning Once the roasted veg are ready, add them in and gently stir to combine, then pour it all into an ovenproof dish Unroll the pastry and use it to top the pie, sealing the edges well, and make a slit in the middle Brush with a little milk, and pop back into the oven for approximately ½ an hour, until the top is golden and risen Serve with creamy mash and seasonal veg

Heat your oven to 160C/140 Fan/Gas 3 and place a heavy baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Pour the milk and cream into a saucepan and heat to just below a simmer In a large bowl whisk together the eggs and sugar together with the orange zest and Cointreau, if using Carefully whisk in the milk mixture (make sure it is not too hot or the eggs will scramble).

Butter the hot cross buns and spread with marmalade and sandwich back together, keep 1 bun whole and cut the others in half the other way so that you have semi-circular pieces Place the whole bun in the centre of your baking dish and arrange the halves in a circle around the whole bun Pour over your custard and leave the buns to absorb the custard for 15 minutes, gently pressing them down into the custard Place in the oven on the baking tray and cook for 35 - 40 minutes until golden brown and the custard is set Leave to rest for 10 minutes before serving with a little cream or ice cream.

Enjoy! - Jo

The Origin of the Hot Cross Bun

Thomas Rocliffe, a 14th-century monk, is widely credited as making the very first hot cross bun. Although the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Saxons all baked a type of bun to mark the changing seasons, it was Brother Rocliffe who made the Alban Bun in 1361.

By the 19th century, hot cross buns were commonly eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of Lent.

Norfolk Flower Farm

Norfolk Flower Farm launched last year and is the product of Ellie Frost ’s passion for growing British cut flowers Having run out of space at home for the obsessive growing, and with a realisation she could turn the idea into a dream business, as well as creating a sustainable venture, the fledgling farm was founded

On a half an acre field located in Edgefield, Ellie grows seasonal flowers full of pollinator-loving insects, abundant with scent and charm, and with an everchanging harvest week by week and month by month throughout the growing season

With around 85% of cut flowers flown into the UK from around the globe, there is a huge carbon footprint. Buying local flowers has many advantages, not least ticking the eco-friendly box, but the selection of English garden flowers has so much more whimsical interest and joy

During the growing season, which is between April/May and November, the flowers grown are used to create beautiful hand-tied gift bouquets for delivery, and on Fridays and Saturday mornings you can rock up to the flower field to buy kitchen table bunches.

And if you’re set for a rustic Norfolk wedding, you can book bridal bouquets, buttonholes and DIY flower buckets – perfect for the creatives out there who want to put their own touch on the venue décor

To keep up to date with the when the flowers will be available, you can sign up to the newsletter via the website norfolkflowerfarm.com. ellie frost : ellie@norfolkflowerfarm com

From Holt Holistic Centre

I’m optimistic that spring is just around the corner and, if you’re like me, the lighter mornings, slightly longer days and bulbs poking up through the soil gives me a renewed motivation and a sense of ‘waking up’ again!

As a keen exercise enthusiast, the knowledge that soon I will be able to go for a run wearing less layers, dog walk without wearing a head torch and wellie boots and get the bike out of the shed to return to training out on the roads helps lift my mood and gives me a focus or a goal to work towards For me it ’s to complete the Norfolk Superhero Challenge again in June this year, which is a charity event that involves a swim, kayak, bike and run so I’m going to be busy!

We know that regular movement, fresh air and exercise is good for us in so many ways Our bodies are incredible machines that are designed to move The chemicals such as endorphins that are released when we exercise lift our mood and make us feel more positive and happy My role as a Physiotherapist is to discuss what each individual's goal or target is and then help them to achieve that goal as part of their treatment and rehabilitation This usually involves a combination of ‘hands on’ treatment sessions plus a specific tailored exercise plan and self-management techniques to reach that goal and hopefully progress further I have 20 years’ experience in the treatment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions plus a real passion and desire to get people moving! Whether the goal is to be able to garden for 30 minutes or to walk the dog up Beeston Bump, to jog 5k 3 times a week, to run a marathon or play a game of tennis, Physiotherapy can help you

achieve your goal and give you the confidence to return to regular activities of your choice with the knowledge and understanding of how your body works, what you can do to help manage or an prevent injury and how you can look after yourself going forward

If you have an existing injury that's not resolving or a recurring injury that is preventing you from achieving your goal or you are just not sure where to start but know you have a goal in mind then I would love to help you I have appointments available Monday to Friday at Holt Holistic Centre or at my clinic in Gunthorpe You can contact me on 07919621006 or email:

Latest News from Duncan Baker MP

As ever it has been a busy month focusing on community work around North Norfolk Herewith are a number of highlights of what I’ve been up to around the area

Victory Homes

The state of our social housing has been brought to my attention and I have been concerned about the number of damp and mould cases brought to me I have a meeting with the Chief Executive of Victory Housing and will be taking forward my overall concerns, including the numbers of homes being sold off If you are having issues with outstanding repairs or mould and damp, please do get in touch with my office so we can help you

North Walsham Jobs Fair

In early January I worked with the North Walsham DWP office to help local people try and find a new job opportunity We held a jobs fair on the 13th January in North Walsham Community Centre This saw 25 businesses and job providers talk to over 200 people A resounding success!

More Mental Health Funding

I was very happy with the further investment announced for mental health funding across the country, with Norfolk and Waveney due to directly benefit from the money This is an area that I've campaigned on tirelessly, to ensure our services receive the investment they need I was incredibly proud when I managed to persuade the local NHS to support mental health clinics at Cromer hospital, offering much-needed care to people in North Norfolk

Clifton Park - Cromer

I'm sure many were considerably concerned when the news broke about the land clearance at Clifton Park in Cromer. An area which presumably was home to many species of animals and plants and cleared, as I understand completely without professionals first assessing the site I was quick to act on this, writing almost immediately to North Norfolk District Council, The Norfolk Wildlife Trust, and the Environment Agency My letter has been seen by the Chair of Natural England and the case is being looked into further

We missed out on Levelling Up Money

I am very disappointed that NNDC have lost out on four consecutive Levelling Up and Community Renewal Fund bids I have written to the council expressing my views and want us to plan now, to find ambitious and imaginative projects that will win government approval I had wanted the important Holway Road/A149 roundabout to be included in the bid which would improve safety on one of our main roads and ease summer congestion I have subsequently met with the road’s Minister to take this forward

If you have problems that I can take up for you, please do not hesitate to contact my office at duncan@duncanbaker org uk

Duncan Baker and a Team of Constituents Deliver 112 Generators to Ukraine

On Sunday 12th February 2023, a team of six North Norfolk residents and Duncan Baker MP, in three transit vans, set off on the 2,000-mile journey to Ukraine to deliver 112 generators and other aid, to those suffering in the war

Just before Christmas, Putin began bombing civilian targets and energy infrastructures causing blackouts in homes across Ukraine and leaving many without light, heat and power This spurred the team to begin raising funds in order to provide generators.

The people of North Norfolk and from wider Norfolk responded phenomenally and raised £18,500 in online donations Some people chose to donate their unused generators, and some bought generators to specifically donate to the cause It was an incredible outcome and one that is greatly appreciated.

Once in Lviv, in Western Ukraine, the group met up with the military aid organisation run by Svitlana Legka that was suggested by Anna Kolomiichuck, the Ukrainian lady that Duncan Baker MP has hosted and supported since the beginning of the war They explained that the generators would be going to schools, orphanages, hospitals and other vulnerable people who are the in the worst hit areas of Ukraine. Whilst staying in Lviv overnight, the air raid siren was activated, and many hotel guests were moved to the basement for cover The following morning it was confirmed that energy infrastructure just outside of the city was hit

Upon their return journey, Duncan Baker took a lady, her 10-year-old daughter, and their pet Marty, the French Bulldog back to England in his van, to provide them safe passage whist fleeing the country after their home was destroyed They are now being hosted by a family in Guildford

The team of 7 included Duncan Baker MP, Rob Scammell, Paul East, Jayne Morton, Michelle Foulkes, Leon Calder and Anna Kolomiichuck They returned home safely but exhausted on Saturday 18th February

Duncan Baker and the team wish to express their thanks “We cannot thank our constituents enough for their generosity in helping us take aid to Ukraine It was a long and tiring journey, but the chance to support and help those in desperate need once again puts North Norfolk on the map Thank you to everyone who made a donation, we could not have done this without you ”

Top Tips with Toll Barn Vets - Exotic Birds Housing

If you keep or are thinking of keeping birds at home you might find the following advice useful.

Most species of bird benefit from a large aviary, providing shelter from in summer as well as heating protection from poor weather conditions in winter, an indoor cage with access to an outdoor aviary can provide the best of both worlds

If you plan on taming your pet bird and keeping them in an indoor cage, at a minimum, your bird needs to be able to fully extend its wings in all directions, but the bigger the cage the better in most respects If housed indoors birds should, where possible, be allowed out of their cage to fly and exercise around the house but always under supervision

It’s not only great for their muscles but also great for their brains, providing much mental stimulation but a word of caution, also make sure house is secure, checking all doors and windows are closed before allowing your bird the freedom to explore

● Make sure all cage ornaments/toys are bird safe and zinc/lead free Having a selection so that you can change and rotate them can prevent boredom by adding some variation

Changing the cage lay out and varying perch options can also help keep them occupied and puzzle feeders can be a fun addition, either homemade or purchased

Access to natural light and/or plementary UV from a bird lamp ve the cage is essential for vitamin/ neral uptake UV bulbs should be anged every 6-12months as they ecome less effective with time

● Birds should have access to natural bird-safe wood for chewing and perches should be non-abrasive and vary in width to allow for comfortable foot grips to be selected and help prevent the development of pododermatitis

● Birds should have access to fresh water at all times

● Birds should be housed in appropriate groups; there are species that are solitary but some smaller species are gregarious and appreciate being house in pairs or groups

High Kelling Garden Club

On Monday 13th April, Julia Stafford-Allen talked to our club about the history of garden tourism and the National Garden Scheme

From Tudor times, the nobility created gardens to encourage a visit by the monarch Over the next two centuries, visiting large gardens both at home and abroad became more popular and, in 1744, the first garden guidebook was published, with 22 editions Garden visitors were not always well behaved, stealing souvenirs and leaving graffiti! The railways increased garden tourism, but few private gardens were open to the public

In 1859, wealthy Liverpool merchant William Rathbone employed a nurse to look after his ailing wife at home When she died, he paid for the nurse to care for the poor in his neighbourhood and went on to raise funds for community nursing in other deprived areas Patronised by Queen Victoria and, later, by Queen Alexandra, this developed into

if the space is available.

● Their daylight hours should be consistent (between 8-12 hours daily) with an indoor cage covered to prevent our light cycles affecting them in the evening This reduces stress and can reduce unwanted mating or plucking behaviours

● Indoor cages should be positioned in areas that are well ventilated but not in draughty areas and always positioned away from aerial pollutants such as smoking and cooking (Teflon pans can release toxins when in use that harm a birds tender respiratory system)

● As already mentioned, birds have sensitive respiratory systems and can suffer from pollutants, keeping an air purifier nearby can help with this

● Cages should be cleaned weekly or more frequently if needed with an appropriate disinfectant such as F10 This reduces bacterial and faecal contamination and keeps the air rd and its sensitive lungs e

Did you know birds can be ringed or microchipped to help identify them if they stray Talk to your vet about options for your pet.

the Queens Nursing Institute, a voluntary organisation setting standards and training and supporting nurses. In 1927, QNI council member, Elsie Wagg, came up with the idea of people opening their gardens to raise funds for the charity, charging visitors a shilling, under a National Garden Scheme In the first year, 609 gardens opened, including Sandringham, raising £8,000 Last year, 3,500 gardens opened, donating over £3 million to nursing and caring charities. After the war, the first annual “ Yellow Book” was published and the NGS became independent in 1980

Our club is planning a programme of garden visits throughout the summer in addition to our evening talks during the autumn and spring. New members are always welcome (not only High Kelling residents) For details contact Tanya, hkgcsecretary@gmail com, phone 07825 578321

Easter Sunday Funday and Races –

Fun Run Free for All

On Easter Sunday, 9th April Fakenham will again be hosting its popular day of running and cycling races. With events for all levels of runners and cycle racers, Active Fakenham is planning for another enjoyable day, but this year with a difference

The Fun Run and Toddle’n’Trike races will be free to enter with people being asked to pay if and what they can Richard Crook, the event organiser said, “We recognise the difficulties many people are having with the cost of living, so we are making this day as accessible as possible The Fun Run is particularly popular with children, but many adults also take part We still plan to give every child a drawstring goody bag with chocolate and fruit, and of course, a medal for completing the course”

Everyone entering will still need to register and obtain a number for insurance purposes and the number of entries will be limited It is possible to prebook all the races from the Active Fakenham website to ensure you get a place Other spaces will be available to book on the day

Richard added, “Also this year we are calling the 5k run the “High 5 5k Run”. It ’s a five-lap race and we noticed that many people were giving ‘high 5’s’ to friends and family, and even to strangers, as they completed each lap This added to the atmosphere, encouraged the runners and was a lot of fun ”

The Town Centre will be closed to traffic for the day, to make way for a line-up of races for all ages: 1 km fun run, a 5 km running race, a toddle-and-trike race for under 5s, and then an afternoon of lightning-fast cycling around the 1km town centre circuit

This cycle racing is known as Criterium racing and is very popular in America and Europe Because the race takes place and is a number of laps over a fixed period of time spectators get to see the riders many times as they complete each lap.

The runs and cycle races are official UK Athletics and British Cycling events and are run under their rules They are a spectacle to watch or great fun to join in with Details of how to take part can be found at www activefakenham org uk Registration is now open and there may be spaces to enter on the day.

There is even a fun Toddle-and-Trike for under 5s, where entrants can bring either a tricycle, scooter or balance bike, or take part on foot

From the Glaven Centre

Here at the Glaven Centre we say goodbye to Emma, our wonderful nursing assistant Emma is off to pastures new to expand her career She will be greatly missed, and we wish her all the best and are very grateful for all she did during her time here. She is going to pop in and see us regularly and we just know she will be a huge asset to her new team

We have all been observing and sharing discussions about the stirrings of spring The snowdrops and crocuses are a picture, aren’t they? We have started to put a list of external activities together for everyone's preference, ready for when the weather warms up; we have quite a list of fun and varied outings. We like to cater for individual needs and preferences whilst creating special memories

We would also like to remember a very special client of ours, Mary Ferroussat Mary has left her legacy throughout Blakeney with all that she gave back to the community, and we will never forget how much care and knowledge we received from her, all based on old traditions which are to be kept alive Please remember the old ways keep stories alive, mend things, appreciate nature and all of her abundance and we will never forget to put sweet cicely in with our rhubarb crumble Our love goes out to Mary's family at this time

Every child entering one of the races receives a free goody-bag (Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult and wear a helmet for the Toddle’n’Trike) All runners will receive a special commemorative medal and there are prizes for the winners of the bike races.

The first race is the High 5, 5k Run, which is five laps of the town centre and starts at 10 30 This is followed by the 1k fun run with some entering in fancy dress and the Toddle’n’Trike is at 12 15 The cycling begins at 12 45 with the circuit opening for familiarisation and warm-up, then the Criterium racing starts with Youth A (U16) and Youth (B) under 14 girls and boys at 1pm. Races will finish by 5.00pm. Everyone taking part in the runs receives a medal, with Easter goody-bags for children There may be places available on the day, but to be sure of a place you should enter online through the Active Fakenham website

Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham said, “We are thrilled to bring this popular event back to the town We try to make this an event for everyone whether they are participating in a race or come along to watch an enjoy the atmosphere Last time the oldest person was in their eighties and the youngest was only one year old We get good club runners, and people who just want to get a bit fitter Last year the British National Champion won the women’s cycle race, so this shows the level of some of the races

I would like to thank in advance the many people who make this happen and, I apologise for any inconvenience for the roads that need to be closed Tesco and Aldi are making their car parks free for the day ”

Our doors are open 9am until 3pm, Monday to Friday and our phone is always on Leave us a message or drop by for a visit Don't hesitate to call if we can help in any way I wonder if anyone out there needs a break and a safe space for your loved one to be cared for whilst you have some time to meet your own needs that can often be forgotten about Whenever you feel ready, we are here - whatever your situation may be. Our open morning is on 22nd March 10am until midday so what a great opportunity to pop in We look forward to welcoming you with friendly faces and cake!

Georgian Holt at Work and Play

Georgian Holt at Work and Play

April 3rd, 2023 sees the publication, by the Holt Society, of a new booklet entitled Georgian Holt at Work and Play written by Margaret Bird, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Based on the contemporary diaries of Mary Hardy and an historical walking tour around Holt, led by Margaret, as part of the 2022 Holt Festival

This 32-page soft-cover booklet delves into the life of the fine north Norfolk town of Holt 1780–1810, thanks to the contemporary diary of Mary Hardy It answers these and other questions:

● What was it like to live and work in Holt during the Georgian period?

● Which were the key buildings?

● What entertainment and schooling were available?

● What impact did enclosure and the constant wars have on the town?

The booklet ’s seven chapters offer in-depth commentary coupled with colour and archive photographs and references to sources and further reading. The chapters are entitled: 1. Holt ’s claims to prominence; 2. The town at work; 3 The town at prayer; 4 Women to the fore; 5 Children’s schooldays; 6 The town in wartime; 7 The town at play Mary Hardy lived in the neighbouring village of Letheringsett, and she and her family frequently visited Holt for work, shopping and recreation. Her extensive diary has allowed us to appreciate and understand Holt and its residents in the Georgian period through its editor Margaret Bird, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society

In Georgian Holt at Work and Play the reader is taken on a virtual walk

around the town, as shown on the copy of a map of 1810 Key buildings and landmarks are located, and their associated stories recounted, in this excellent study which will appeal to the curious resident or visitor as well as historians

You can read about the sample market in grain, the local and regional justice system, the twice-yearly fair, and how the many public houses ‘underpinned a wide range of activities central to people’s lives’ This wonderfully rich description of life in Georgian Holt also includes the rise of the Methodists and the reasons behind the severe economic pressures of the time In addition, the enormous influence of the womenfolk is certainly not left out Georgian Holt at Work and Play is published by the Holt Society You can find it priced at £5.00 (+ postage & packing £1.50) in local bookshops, on Amazon and at other major booksellers Or you can order a copy from the Society ’s own website (http://www theholtsociety org / members php)

The Arts Society Glaven Valley

The Arts Society Glaven Valley meets for lectures on arts and related subjects, once a month on the third Tuesday from September to June. We meet at Cley Village Hall. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 21 March at 1.45 for 2.15 at the Village Hall in Cley.

Stone on Stone - The Men Who Built Cathedrals. A lecture by Imogen Corrigan

Do you stand in the nave of Norwich cathedral and wonder how on earth ordinary human beings created sky-scraping, dizzyingly high buildings on which even the top-most parts were delicately decorated?

In this lecture Expert Imogen Corrigan will tell us about the Master Masons who both designed the buildings and ran the site They commanded everything whether it was sourcing the vast quantities of wood and stone, recruiting the workforce or knowing enough about their various trades to be able to create heaven on earth out the cacophony of thousands of chisels and hammers These men were charismatic leaders, but they were continually checked by their fellow Master Masons in the interests of making a building as strong as possible - we only see their successes, after all They were real people who got into trouble with the law, who occasionally cheated on contracts, who liked to start a job but not to finish it On the other hand, their creations remain to this day, some breathtakingly beautiful in their exquisite detail causing us, centuries later, to stand in a nave and wonder

Membership of TASGV costs £45 a year You can come as a guest for £5 to see if you enjoy our meeting There is free parking in the car park next to the Village Hall New members are welcomed, and you can find out how to join on our website www.theartssocietyglavenvalley.org.uk

Wherry Charity Launches 2023 Programme of Norfolk Broads Sailings

Bookings are now being taken to sail on the Norfolk Broads this summer in a traditional Edwardian passenger wherry. Only eight of these elegant vessels are still in existence - five of which have been restored and are maintained and operated by the Wherry Yacht Charter Charitable Trust Income generated from their just-published programme of scheduled sailings and bespoke charters helps preserve the historic wherries for the future while allowing current generations to enjoy the unique experience of sailing in them Day trips are available on various dates between May 5th and September 30th, setting off from a number of Broadland locations including Wroxham, Stalham, Ludham, How Hill and Dilham. Some sailings stop at local nature reserves and tourist attractions while others include lunch or supper In addition to the scheduled trips, up to 12 people can charter a wherry for the day or a longer period of time for a family gathering, special occasion or event - with refreshments provided if required Each wherry has a fully trained skipper and crew who are all volunteer members of Wherry Yacht Charter Behind the scenes more volunteers help maintain the wherries, take part in fundraising activities and undertake administrative roles

It has now been two years since I began working at Age Concern North Norfolk and one of the goals set for me by the trustees was to increase our profile in North Norfolk through expanding our range of networks

I am pleased to say that the services that we offer in our day centre and our meal delivery scheme have become our success story to the extent that we are preparing up to 40 meals per day and we have around 50 people attending sessions across the four days that we are open

Two special events have been held at The Lighthouse recently – the Dementia Engagement Day and ‘Sheringham Helps’ which brought the community and general public in to find out about all the support that is on offer in this area We had a stand displaying all our activities which included the Magic Interactive Table and our robotic cat Tabitha (who I could have sold several times over!) While I can acknowledge that the vast majority of organisations represented at these events was well aware of Age Concern North Norfolk, there are still people who do not know what we do or think we are an advice organisation like AgeUK

I will continue to write these articles, which go into every household in North Norfolk, as they keep people informed far better than I can ever do on my own

If you are interested to find out more, please contact Alison on 01263 821188.

Magnificent Music Thrills crowd at Briston!

Take just one talented man, a state of the art digital musical instrument, a packed hall of live-music lovers, and you've got a recipe for a brilliant night out! The musician was the amazing Brett Wales, the instrument was the Wersi Sonic digital organ, and the hall was the Copeman Centre at Briston, which on Friday February 10th was filled to capacity with music lovers from all over the East of England!

We heard a most varied programme - from 'Macarthur Park' to themes from 'Pirates of the Caribbean' - 'Oh My Beloved Father' to 'The St Louis Blues March' - 'Tico Tico' to 'Sleepy Time Girl' - and just so many more great numbers too Proceeds from the raffle and refreshments also helped to raise £160 for the Copeman Centre funds, and an amazing £124 for our chosen charity, the wonderful ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital (see www orbis org)

Want to know what you missed? Well, click on www brettwales com and watch his video clip - and then wish you had been with us for the evening! If you would like details of our next shows this year, give us a call on 01263 860844 - it might just be the best 'phone call you ever made!

Langham Dome Museum

The beautiful sunshine that we’ve had lately has focused our minds on the fact that Opening Day is right around the corner!

Our first day for the 2023 Season will be Thursday 6th April, 10 am till 4pm

In March our magnificent replica Spitfire will be mounted on its plinth and pilot Dickie will once again be keeping watch over the Dome!

We have 6 new volunteers on board this year Having had a new recruiting poster out this winter it was well received, and we had replies from several interesting candidates. They will be joining our newly appointed Assistant Manager, Scott Eltringham, at the Dome for an Induction Course on how our volunteers interact with our visitors

Last year we were over the moon to have received The TripAdvisor Award 2022, making us one of the top 10 % of attractions in the world! A big part of this was down to our wonderful group of volunteers, who help present the unique history of the Dome to our visitors You only have to check out our 5-star reviews to see the public’s comments! Scott is spending time looking for new lines for the Gift Shop, to keep things as tempting as possible! He is also doing a great job with our social media output If you’re on Facebook and Instagram, you may like to follow his hugely interesting posts about the stories that surrounded the Dome in WW2 RAF Langham was part of Coastal Command and has an abundance of heroic and sometimes tragic tales to tell

We’ve been fundraising like crazy for a much-needed new Projector System for the Dome One of our Trustees, Roland Goodison is cycling the C2C, 146 miles across the country, to help raise money for the new system The films are the HEART of our museum The very purpose of the Dome was to project moving images of enemy planes onto its curved surfaces to enable trainee gunners to hone their skills Those

Fakenham Eyewear The Eye Man

films are still used by our visitors today, but the projectors are also used to show our intriguing films narrated by Stephen Fry, which explain the history of, and the stories of Langham Dome, the airfield, and its connection to Langham Village We’ve done well so far, but still need help to reach our target. If you would like to help with our fund raising, you can donate via the QR Code above or of course, at the Dome itself from 6th April

We can’t wait to see you all soon, both new and returning visitors! www langhamdome org Facebook Instagram. Twitter.

Coastal Health and Wellbeing

Coastal Health and Wellbeing at The Old Cottage Hospital, Wells Next the Sea (Formerly Wells Community Hospital Trust)

How to support your community by supporting Coastal Health and Wellbeing's community supermarket and hygiene bank

Our Coastal Community supermarket provides affordable healthy meals, comforting treats, and sanitary/hygiene products to local people We have continued to grow, reaching upwards of 300 people in North Norfolk, with many more utilising our other health and wellbeing services at the old cottage hospital in Wells-next-the-Sea Lifetime membership is £3.50, and people can access the service from village halls across North Norfolk

We thank our suppliers who have supported us for the last six months With kind donations from local suppliers, we enable people to live with dignity and sustain an affordable but healthy lifestyle The cost of food has risen circa 40% in the last year; we hope to bridge the ever-growing gap between people's finances, their ability to eat well, and self-care.

10% of North Norfolk's population are considered deprived, so every one of your donations is reaching people who need it most

We are also providing parcels to families during the school holidays providing a few days' food when wallets are tightest and giving people the choice of a good meal and a day out with the family, and we support Ukrainian refugees who regularly use the community supermarket

If you would like to help us expand our reach do get in touch as we are looking for volunteers to help us run the supermarket in different venues across North Norfolk Contact admin@wellshospital uk

We are always happy to receive donations, we particularly need sanitary towels, toothpaste, and bars of soap, for our free hygiene bank. Please drop donations to reception at The Old Cottage Hospital, Mill Road, Wells Next the Sea, NR23 1RF

Glaven Valley Conservation Area Review Extended

North Norfolk District Council has extended the Glaven Valley Conservation Area Appraisal until March 31, 2023, to allow additional time for feedback

The Council is asking residents to have their say on the future of the management and protection of the Glaven Valley Conservation Area in North Norfolk. This follows the successful adoption of six new village Conservation Area Appraisals last year

The Glaven Valley Conservation Area was designated in 1984 and covers a large landscape area which follows the River Glaven The appraisal of Conservation Areas is needed to understand their character and significance. An appraisal provides an opportunity to define an area's special interest, consider any vulnerabilities or potential enhancement and ensure the boundaries stay relevant

The Council’s appointed heritage consultants, Purcell, have drafted an appraisal for the Glaven Valley Conservation Area This appraisal records and analyses the special interest of the Valley, recognises the variety of heritage assets, identifies issues and opportunities, sets out proposals for boundary changes and provides for the positive long-term management and enhancement of the Conservation Area

During the consultation period, which will now run from November 21 to March 31, 2023, we will happily receive any comments on (1) the contents of the Appraisal and Management Plan and (2) the proposed boundary changes

Cllr Andrew Brown, portfolio holder for Planning and

ST Sutton

Guy Stra on Funeral Director Tel: 01328 710301

Enforcement, said: “ The Glaven Valley Conservation Area is a fantastic part of North Norfolk, rural conservation areas are pretty unique, and we are fortunate to have this area to complement the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which our planning policies must ensure its protection and management in the future. As residents, we know there are lots of things you love about where you live, and we would like to hear from you ”

The appraisal documents are available to view at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/glavenvalley

There are exhibitions displaying proposals at two locations - St Nicholas Church in Blakeney and St Lawrence Parish Church in Hunworth, with hard copies of the draft appraisal available at Holt Library and the Council Offices in Cromer

Please send any feedback or questions to caaconsultation@north-norfolk gov uk

Non surgical and minimally invasive options for treatment of varicose veins.

Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping. Endovenous laser therapy using painless laser is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour

Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux ”) of blood back into the foot The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg: that can’t be seen at the surface

The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day

Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy

Coltishall Clinic also offers minimally invasive and non-invasive sclerotherapy and lasers to treat varicose and spider veins

Solution to No 311:

5 b6 a1Q (R,B,S) 6 b7

A walkover for just knowing the moves! Actually, I wonder if this would be the record length for a published orthodox problem with all moves forced on both sides

- No cheating! 5

The length (12 moves!) of No 312 might put off at first sight, but in fact it is so easy that I need not trouble solvers to send solutions this time either It does not even conform to the usual convention that a good problem should never start with a check I leave readers to enjoy the spectacle of the black K being “kicked upstairs”

A Ray of Hope for Earthquake Victims

Sheringham photographer, Chris Taylor, captured the freezing mist of dawn rolling off the land at Cromer which has proved to be a big hit online.

Following enquiries to purchase prints Chris has decided to donate 50% of any sales of the print to the Red Cross Turkey-Syria Earthquake appeal

The image was taken using a drone, at the maximum 120m altitude at around 7:30am on Valentine’s Day, as the sun rose and the icy cold mist rolled off the land, obscuring much of Cromer apart from the pier & the church tower Since it was Valentine’s Day it seems appropriate that the image should be used to spread some love and help those suffering the devastating effects of the earthquake in Turkey

"I had been up since 3am, unable to sleep, so after getting some work done, at around 6am (still dark and 2°C outside, I decided to take the drone over to Cromer for sunrise to see what I could get I hadn’t expected the rolling fog and from ground level the visibility was very poor but up in the air the drone captured a different view, one which has captured people’s imagination online with some lovely comments and requests for prints "

Prints start at £20 for a 12 x 8-inch print and are proving popular The prints can be ordered by heading to my blog at - https://www.christaylorphoto.co.uk /blog

(I’m offering Cromer & Sheringham residents a postage refund if they wanted to collect the prints from me in Sheringham)

Buying a property with cash

If you’re searching for a new home, you may have come across the term ‘cash buyers only.’ In these cases, the agent is looking to sell to someone who does not need to borrow money and can proceed quickly

There can be distinct advantages to being a cash buyer, or selling to one, however, it is important to be clear on what this actually means

What is a cash buyer?

A cash buyer is someone who can finance their purchase without a mortgage or selling another property They must have enough money available to buy the property at the time they make the offer Having proof of your funds to hand will boost your credibility and help speed up the process

If you are selling your home, your estate agent should confirm how the proposed buyer will pay for it Ask yours how they will verify a buyer ’s status

What are the advantages of being a cash buyer?

Cash buyers can proceed more quickly because they do not have to wait for a mortgage or for their own sale to complete As a cash buyer, you may be able to negotiate a lower price or negotiate other benefits

Cash buyers will also find it easier to buy at auction or buy properties considered unmortgageable, for example, ones of nonstandard construction or which have structural or title problems

Keeping you and your investment safe

All sellers and buyers must provide proof of their identity and address to comply with anti-money laundering regulations The requirements will depend upon your solicitor and whether you are meeting them face-to-face. You should have your current passport or photocard driving licence and a recent council tax or utility bill available as this will help avoid delay As a purchaser you will need to show the source of your funds not only to the agents but also your solicitor who will need to confirm your funds are from a legitimate source This is to comply with legislation aimed at reducing criminal activity For example, if you are funding your purchase from savings, they will ask to see bank statements showing regular payments into your account and your savings building up

Due diligence

Cash buyers should be wary of any pressure to complete before they are ready Be cautious about dispensing with any of the recommended searches or investigations into title Your solicitor can advise you of the risks involved and if necessary, ways of mitigating this, for example by taking out indemnity insurance Be wary of so-called buy

any property companies, which regularly advertise on the internet or in local media While some are genuine, others are only middlemen for third party investors Others may use dubious tactics such as making an initial high offer then reducing it before the sale goes through
