News from the Venue

A Note from the Editor

At last, the sun has arrived, and thoughts are turning to lazy summer days and holidays.

With many families caught in the cost-of-living crisis, outings for the children can be an unaffordable luxury, but there is fun to be had for very little cost or even for free. Look out for school holiday activities such as the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun scheme which can be booked for free activities on the Norfolk County Council website. Keep an eye out for other free workshops and activities available in your area. Local carnivals are always popular with families, pack up a picnic and take advantage of all the free fun available. Local carnival dates are:

Wells Carnival: Friday 29th July – Sunday 7th August inclusive: (Carnival Day & Parade - Saturday 6th Aug).

Sheringham Carnival: Monday 1st August – Sunday 7th August (Carnival Day & Parade – Wednesday 3rd August). Cromer Carnival: Saturday 13th August to Friday 19th August (Carnival Day & Parade - Wednesday 17th August). Whether you are having a ‘staycation’ of off on your travels, have a great summer. Enjoy your July magazine. Jo – Editor.

Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines.

Month August September October

Copy deadline Tuesday 2nd August Tuesday 30th August Tuesday 27th September

We are so excited to not only be welcoming Holt Festival back to the Venue in July, but also a fabulous collective of artists from the Institute of East Anglian Artists who are putting on a superb exhibition in the Anwen and John Hurt Exhibition Space. The exhibition is free entry and promises to be an exciting and eclectic mix of styles, so please do support them by visiting over the 2 weeks that they are with us. The line up for the Holt Festival is once again an amazing mix of talented and diverse artists and acts, and we are privileged to be hosting some of them. The team that delivers the Festival are all volunteers, and work so hard behind the scenes to make it a very professional, high quality and enjoyable experience for all, and they are a delight to have in the Venue, so huge thanks to Anwen and also Susan Williams and her amazing team of volunteers; we look forward to seeing you soon! It is such a boost for the town to have the Holt Festival here every year, bringing lots of new people into Holt. Our programme of live music continues apace, with the fabulous Soul Traders returning in August for another fantastic evening of music and dancing for only £8.00 a head including booking fee; they were a huge hit in May when they helped us to raise £1500 for Ukraine, and we are delighted to welcome them back. Tickets can be purchased on EventBrite. We have a new Jazz Band coming also in August, The Tom Harris Trio, who have played previously at Byfords, and we are excited that they were free to come and play at the Venue. It is so great to support musicians and artists to once again play to live audiences who have had such a difficult time over the last 2 years.

We were so thrilled to find out that we are one of the 26 lucky charities to be nominated to receive £1000 from Duncan Bakers’ marathon run this year, and we look forward to cheering him on as he runs 26 miles for local charities and for the Norfolk Community Foundation’s Supporting Ukraine Fund; he certainly works hard for his constituency, and we are so grateful to have his support in this way. If you would like to donate money for his run to benefit all these worthy causes, go to www.duncanbaker.org.uk/marathon2022. Every little helps! The Venue Cinema

Despite difficulties with our Cinema System over the last few months, we are forging on with providing Cinema in Holt from September. We continue to strive to maintain and improve the facility as best we can with the funds that are available and thank everyone who has been so patient and supported the Venue through this difficult season of misbehaving equipment.

Stay Safe This Summer

Summer holidays are coming, and we are expecting more people than ever to visit our beaches and inland waterways. The RNLI, HM Coastguard and Broads Authority are all working to keep people safe near water.

STAY SAFE

ENJOY YOUR TIME AT THE COAST

Below you will find hints to help keep you and your family safe. Please cut this article out and keep it; it may just save you or your family’s lives. On the beach or any body of water Be prepared • Stay close to a friend or family member • Plan for your activity • Find a safe place to go • Be able to swim and float. Stay close to a friend or family member. Always go with someone else when you go into or near water. Friends or family can help in an emergency.

• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. • Check the weather and tide times. • Read signs and be aware of local hazards.

IN AN EMERGENCY call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Our advice for tidal cut off: • Always check the tide times and heights and keep a look out for incoming tide. Use tide timetables or a tidal prediction app like AnyTide. Make sure you have enough time to return safely. If in doubt, seek local advice. • Always carry a means of calling for help on your person. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard if you are in danger or you see someone in danger of being cut off by the tide. • Tell someone else where you’re going and when you’ll be back. They can raise the alarm with the coastguard by calling 999 or 112 if you are overdue BEACH SAFETY Know your flags • Red and Yellow flags Lifeguard areas, safe areas to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables • Black and White cheqered flags are for surfboards, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and other non-powered craft. Launch and recovery area for kitesurfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. • Red flags Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the Red Flag is flying • Orange Windsock Indicates offshore or strong winds. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying.

KNOW WHAT TO DO SEARCH: RESPECT THE WATER Photo: RNLI/Nigel Millard

The water is powerful: It’s not what you’re used to in a swimming pool. • The water is moving. • The water is colder than you think. • The edge can be dangerous. • There might be dangers under the water. The water is moving water around our coasts and in rivers is always moving. • Rips are strong currents running out to sea that can easily take swimmers out beyond their depth. Know what to do if you get caught in one. • Tides cause a rise and fall in sea level. Check times of high and low tide so you don't get cut off. • Unexpected waves can quickly sweep people off their feet, even on a calm day. Keep an eye on the water and don't go too close to the water’s edge • If you're in trouble in a rip current: If you can stand, walk, don’t swim. If you have a board or inflatable, you should keep hold of it to help you float. Raise your hand and shout for help. Never try and swim against the rip or you'll get exhausted. Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it then make for shore

email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

• Carry a means of calling for help and keep it protected and attached to you at all times.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea Royal National Lifeboat Institution, a charity registered in England and Wales (209603) and Scotland (SC037736). Registered charity number 20003326 in the Republic of Ireland

Inflatables • Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be blown offshore. If you must use them at the beach, then: • ensure children are closely supervised • keep nearby • only use between the red and yellow flags • follow the lifeguards' advice • do not take out in big waves • do not use when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates offshore wind What to do if a child goes missing • Calmly check the surroundings first, ensuring other children remain supervised. • Contact the lifeguards or police and keep them informed. • Let all searchers know once the child is found

County Councillor Report for Holt Division

Dear Readers,

from County Councillor Eric Vardy

Big Norfolk Holiday Fun Opens for Summer Bookings Children across Norfolk can benefit from a range of fun activities this summer, as the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun scheme returns for the six-week school holiday. Bookings are now open for the scheme, which provides free activities with a healthy lunch for children eligible for means tested free school meals. The scheme is delivered by Norfolk County Council in partnership with Active Norfolk and supports children aged 5 to 16 as part of the government’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme. The programme provides children with a host of fun activities and helps parents to reduce their childcare costs. With so much choice available, children should be able to find something that they have a genuine interest in, and the scheme has the potential to inspire future careers, hobbies, and skills. The Council had great feedback from children and young people who have taken part in the past, so I’d encourage families to get booking on what promises to be a fantastic summer programme. We know it is a welcome support for many families during the school holidays. Activities will be running from 25 July to 2 September where children will have the opportunity to learn a new skill, play a range of sports or take part in a host of activities such as outdoor adventures, science workshops, cooking, art, and lots more. Those who have taken part in previous Big Norfolk Holiday Fun programmes have reported doing more physical activity and many have said they’ve been inspired to try healthier foods. The summer programme is now open for bookings for children aged 5-16 (or 4 if they turn 5 in August). Those who are eligible for means-tested free school meals can claim free spaces, whilst paid spots for a small charge are available on many activities for those who don’t qualify for a free place, more can be found on this here www.norfolk.gov.uk/ bignorfolkholidayfunThis year there will be no special codes needed to book activities making it much easier for families to take part. Families are encouraged to explore the wide range of activities available and book as soon as possible. Further information on how to book can be found at Big Norfolk Holiday Fun - Norfolk County Council and the video ‘What is Big Norfolk Holiday Fun?’ gives a great summary of the scheme.

First Look at Plans for New £1.65m Recycling Centre at Sheringham Plans have just been unveiled for a large new recycling centre at Sheringham, intended to replace the current site and serve as a new recycling centre for the area. Norfolk County Council is now asking for people’s thoughts on the proposed site location and design. The County Council want to deliver a new recycling centre with plenty of parking, a one-way system to cut queues, and that has space for a reuse shop. The new and much larger site is designed to make it easier for people to use, help increase recycling rates, and ensure the area has a recycling centre that’s fit for the future. I urge residents to look at the plans and have their say. County councillors allocated £1.65m funding in February 2019 for this part of Norfolk’s ongoing recycling centre improvement programme. The new recycling centre would have: • a reuse shop • plenty of parking spaces • a one-way system for smooth traffic flow and reduced queues • separate public and service areas (which means it would not need to close for waste collection lorries, as is the case at the current site) • a ‘pay as you throw’ section for DIY waste and a trade service for small businesses.

The new site would be located on land opposite the existing Sheringham recycling centre and accessed from the A148 Holt Road. A new junction with the A148 is proposed to improve visibility in both directions. The consultation is open from 1 July to 31 July 2022. To take part in the consultation you can visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/ Following the consultation, Norfolk County Council hopes to submit the planning application in autumn 2022. If approved, construction is expected to start in summer 2023 and the new site could be open in late 2023/early 2024.

The speaker for the June meeting was Dr Stephen Gillam. He did a slideshow and talked about the eight generations of GPs in his family. It was very interesting and afterwards he answered questions from the members. It was good to hear a view about the current NHS from a GP.

Two teams from Holt WI entered the Brass Tray Quiz which was held in Mundesley. It was a very entertaining evening, and the Holt teams came second and fourth so a respectable result. Four members were invited to Walsingham WI Victorian tea. Queen Victoria was there and talked about her long reign and her family. Afterwards there was a delicious tea which was enjoyed by everyone. Plans were finalised for the upcoming Thursford trip and the next outing in September was discussed. We meet third Wednesday of the month between 2 and 4pm at the Venue.

Furry and Fluffy Friends

Age Concern North Norfolk has had a busy month with our clients having several opportunities to embrace our furry and fluffy friends. There is no doubt that visits of small animals and birds provide huge stimulation and wonderment to our clients in the day centre, even if at first, they may say they do not want to touch them, they soon overcome their fears and join in with everyone else.

First of all, we followed up on our visit of the guinea pigs to the centre by going to see them at the Cavies and Cake Café in Fakenham. Five clients were treated to refreshments and cakes before the guinea pigs were placed on the table in front of them to feed and cuddle. The Cavies and Cake scheme is an awardwinning specialist in therapeutic guinea-pig visits, focusing on cognitive, sensory, fine motor skills and emotional engagement.

The same week we had a ‘parliament of owls’ in the centre from Norfolk Wild Encounters – barn, snowy, boreal to name a few types and we watched them in Owls flight across the hall to eat some prepared food as well as holding them on outstretched glove-covered arms. It was exciting to see them and to learn about their history.

We are fortunate that these encounters with nature are available to our clients and create lasting memories for the people in the centre. If you are interested in coming to the day centre, please contact Alison on 01263 821188 for more #.

Weather Forecast

The previous three months have been notable especially for their lack of meaningful rain and recent Mediterranean days.

July is likely to settle down from the second week as pressure starts to rise. We still may suffer on the coast as far as temperatures go because of below average sea temperatures. August will continue with the settled pattern in the first part of the month with spikes of very warm or hot days but will become more unsettled with temperature overall only coming out at average for the month. Monthly Memory Swap

Usually the third Tuesday of the month, over a cup of tea or coffee, the next event is on Tuesday the 19th of July, from 3.00pm – 5.00pm. If you have fond, even precious, memories of growing-up and/or living in Holt, why not come along to the ‘Monthly Memory Swap’ in the lounge/bar area of The Venue. Digital Lasting Powers of Attorney – Will they be safe?

The Ministry of Justice is looking to modernise the process of creating Lasting Powers of Attorney and introduce making LPAs completely online. Powers of Attorney have come a long way from the pre-printed double-sided booklet that was predecessor to the LPA - the “Enduring Power of Attorney” or EPA - that could be made from 1986 to 2007.

By 2007, as EPAs could be made by individuals at home and taking professional advice was not obligatory, there were concerns over the number of EPAs made without the full understanding of the Donor. It was felt that there were not enough safeguarding measures in the EPA making process – and this led to the creation of Lasting Powers of Attorney or LPAs.

Although EPAs did not have to be registered until the Donor was beginning to lack mental capacity to manage their financial affairs, they had one important protection; anyone dealing with the Attorney could ask the Donor of an unregistered EPA to confirm that the Attorney was acting within their authority. Once the Donor lacked mental capacity, the Court of Protection was involved and could protect a vulnerable Donor by asking the Attorney for accounts and investigate any claims of financial abuse.

Unlike the old EPAs, LPAs must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian prior to use and registration is proof of the authority of the Attorney to act. So, unlike in the days of EPAs,

the Donor is therefore unlikely to be asked by anyone dealing with the Attorney, if the Attorney is acting as the Donor expects. This means that a vulnerable Donor needs to be confident that they understand what is involved in making an LPA and adequate safeguards are in place to avoid abuse.

For the time being, Lasting Powers of Attorney need to be printed off and signed by the Donor and Attorneys, all of whom need witnesses to their signatures. Digital signatures are not accepted. In addition, a Certificate Provider must confirm on the form that the Donor understands the LPA and that no fraud or pressure is being put on them to make it. Making an LPA online would mean that there need no longer be a physical witness to the Donor’s signature – and The Law Society and STEP are concerned about the impact that this would have in terms of safeguarding the Donor against fraud, coercion or pressure.

LPAs are legal documents that give the Attorneys wide powers over decisions that affect the Donor’s life when their mental capacity is diminished – and can allow the Attorneys to deal with everything from finances, to where the Donor lives or even the life sustaining medical treatment they receive. An independent witness watching the Donor sign is able to assess whether the Donor does understand and want to make the LPA – and could give evidence on this to the O ffice of the Public Guardian if there were concerns over how the LPA was made.

The Certificate Provider must currently have met with the Donor and spoken to them about the LPA to be able to confirm that the Donor understands what he or she is signing. Digital creation of LPAs will need to include this safeguard for Donors, but it is not yet clear how the Ministry of Justice intend that this protection be maintained through an online application.

For the time being, we remain bound by signatures on a printed LPA and it is likely that paper applications to register LPAs always be an option for those who do not have access to the internet, or those uncomfortable with making an LPA digitally.

Both STEP and The Law Society welcome making LPAs easier and quicker to create, but are looking to see that there is a comprehensive set of safeguards linked to the online creation of LPAs. Because of the lack of human element in the signing process, how to prove that the Donor has mental capacity and understands the nature of the document they are signing will need careful consideration. The government will produce further details on these points before making LPAs online becomes possible and potentially safe. Keep the Wheels Turning!

The Society’s flagship flagship locomotive

The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society is a local charity with over 2,000 members – all love railways, especially the heritage kind. The Society is named after a company that operated a railway across Norfolk in the early 20th century which, over the years, never quite lost its M&GN identity. The charity was founded in 1959 and has been successful in developing its strategies and responding well to challenges – so much so it now has assets of over £3 million. Our head office is in Sheringham and many of our activities are undertaken in close co-operation with the North Norfolk Railway where most of our Collection can be found. The Society owns full size steam and diesel locomotives, vintage coaches and wagons but it takes many hands to help achieve our principle aim of restoring, operating and maintaining the vehicles and artefacts. We are in need of more volunteers to help us in our endeavours.

Summer 2022

No. 193 £5.00

Joint Line is a quarterly magazine given free to members. The editor is retiring next year so we require someone to be, in the first instance, assistant editor and to take the reigns next summer. The work involves editing and commissioning articles (though much of the content is provided by volunteer colleagues), page layout and photo preparation, both in readiness for the commercial printer. The work could be undertaken by a small group with individual responsibilities. Either way, we would be delighted to hear from you – appropriate software is provided.

As has been found by so many volunteer-based organisations, the pandemic has resulted in a drop in regular and occasional volunteers hence why encouraging new people is a priority for us and to have new trustees to help run the charity. Some of the current vacancies are described on this page but we also would welcome people with experience in: • metalwork and woodwork for our restorations • media relations • digital media and IT • graphic design, exhibitions and As well as online, we have a bookshop • museum operation at Weybourne station that, as with the museum, cannot open unless we have the We have a need for ‘back staff. High Ambitions

Teams from Rotary clubs across North Norfolk and the Holt Youth Project took to the trees at Holkham in a sponsored High Ropes Challenge to raise funds for respite breaks for Young Carers. Team ages ranged from 8 to 82 all motivated by the desire to help these deserving youngsters enjoy a few days respite at the National Trust Activity Centre, Brancaster.

The oldest participant, John Rampling from Holt at a youthful 82 years, said “Young Carers have challenging lives balancing schoolwork with their daily responsibilities at home providing essential support for other family members. The much-needed funds raised by this lofty challenge will help provide weekend breaks for over 60 Young Carers from across North Norfolk”. The youngest team member, 8-year-old Emily, raised £80 in sponsorship and 12 year old Jacob from Hunstanton said "we are excited to be taking part and very aware that we are helping to raise funds for other children whose lives are not as easy as ours and hope that they will enjoy their break”. Rotary in North Norfolk would like to thank Holkham and Norfolk Adventures for their invaluable support for without them we would never have got off the ground!

Brownies

Who doesn’t love a brownie, rich, sweet, and so versatile? The perfect pick-me-up with a cuppa. Once you have the basic recipe perfected the variations are endless. Try adding some nuts for crunch, maybe fruit (raspberries are good), or a swirl of salted caramel or Biscoff spread. Add mincemeat for Christmas brownies or mini eggs at Easter, or decorate for a special occasion, there are so many ways to put your own stamp on these delicious treats. This recipe is an easy starter version, the trick is to get that dense, fudgy middle by not over baking, cook for too long and you have chocolate cake, so remove from the oven whilst the middle is still slightly underdone.

3 large eggs, beaten 100g plain flour 25g cocoa powder 100g chocolate chunks/chips (milk, plain or white)

Ingredients

175g dark chocolate 175g butter 250g caster sugar

That’s a Wrap Folks!

As a society, we are endlessly engaged with trying to make our food ‘fast’, but it’s not always such a bad thing. We all live busy lives, and not everyone loves slaving over a hot stove! Finding recipes that work for you by not only being popular with everyone but saving you time and money is my constant quest, and this recipe definitely ticks all those boxes. It’s quick, nutritious, fun, and can feed everyone from a vegan to a meat eater happily, plus it's easy on the wallet. You may have only ever eaten baked beans before, but I promise you that this is an absolutely delicious supper, so be brave and start putting those tins of mixed beans into your shopping cart! Better still, buy them dried, soak overnight, change the water the next day and boil them up; you can then pop them in the freezer in portion sizes, ready to pull out and add to any number of dishes. Beans and pulses are so good for you, store well and are relatively cheap and can be added to soups, stews and can replace meat in lots of dishes, as in this one. As food becomes pricier and the bills are getting bigger, we all need to think about how we can make our budgets go further and replacing some or all of the meat in a recipe with beans and pulses is an easy win. Wraps are cheap and easy to buy, and kids love assembling their wraps to eat, often willingly adding veg and salad in that they normally wouldn’t touch. The blend of cooked and crunchy raw veg, hummus and condiments is a winner, and we regularly now have this at home. Mix up the veg according to what is in season or on special.

Method Preheat your oven to 180C/Gas 4. Grease a deep baking pan, 22cm x 32cm, and line with baking parchment. Put the butter and chocolate in a mixing bowl and sit on top of a pan of simmering water (make sure the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water) and stir the mixture until fully melted, then leave to cool slightly. Put the eggs and sugar in a separate mixing bowl and whisk until pale and at the ‘ribbon’ stage. Sift the flour and cocoa into the egg mixture, then add the melted chocolate and fold together until fully incorporated and smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin, sprinkle over the chocolate chunks/chips and bake for about 30 minutes (test the middle with a cocktail stick, it should come out looking slightly wet). Leave to cool completely in the tin then lift out on the paper and cut into squares. Enjoy! Jo – editor

Method

Heat a little of the oil from the jar of sun-dried tomatoes in a deep non-stick frying pan or wok and add all the veg except the beans. Gently fry until the veg are softening, about 10mins, being careful not to burn them. Add the paprika, chilli powder and soy sauce and stir well, then check the seasoning and gently fry for another 5 minutes before adding in the beans and stirring. Heat through for another 5 mins, and serve in wraps, with salad, a little grated cheese and mayo. Carolyn Burn

Mixed Bean Burritos

1 red onion, finely chopped 3 sticks celery, finely chopped 2 large flat mushrooms, diced into small chunks 1 red and 1 green pepper, chopped into small chunks 2 fat garlic cloves, chopped finely 1 fat courgette, cut into small chunks 2 tins mixed beans, drained and rinsed A few sun-dried tomatoes from a jar, plus some of the oil 2 tsp smoked paprika ½ to 1 tsp mild chilli powder Seasoning to taste Splash soy sauce Soft wraps and chopped salad such as lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes to serve Mayo and grated cheese to serve (use vegan versions if needed) email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

LASTING LASTING P POWERS OWERS OF OF ATTORNEY ATTORNEY

Why are Lasting Powers of Attorney so important?

It is a common misconception that a spouse/family member has an automatic entitlement to make decisions for you if you lose mental capacity short or long term, but that is not true. To protect you and your loved ones against a short or long term situation where your husband, wife, partner, children cannot make decisions for you, we highly recommend that you contact us to book a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT to discuss putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place.

There are 2 different types of Lasting Powers of Attorney – one for financial and property decisions and the other for health and care decisions. Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney can be likened to the purchase of a home insurance policy. You hope that your house won’t burn down, but if it did, then knowing that you have house insurance in place can make a real difference in putting your mind at ease.

We are all living longer and statistics show that 1 in 3 of us will develop dementia. Covid and lockdowns have made Lasting Powers of Attorney even more important, especially if you become housebound or are isolating. It is vital to release the burden from loved ones to allow them to access your money and pay for your care. Banks can freeze accounts if capability is lost, even if in joint names.

A Lasting Power of Attorney negates these issues and gives you and your loved ones peace of mind.

Please contact us to make a F R E E F I R S T A P P O I N T M E N T to discuss this further. We offer home visits at no extra cost.

Jellyfish to go to School

As part of its tenth birthday celebrations Active Fakenham is organising and funding a theatre production for the Fakenham Infant and nursery school. The Jellyfish theatre company will be performing their latest touring show, “Wagon of Dreams” to the two hundred children in the school playing field.

Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham, who is also a Trustee at the Fakenham Community Centre said, “Active Fakenham is primarily about putting on low cost or free activities with some kind of well-being focus events. It’s a bit unusual for us to fund something like this. Originally, I had planned to arrange it for the Community Centre, but I think it will reach more children if this performance is taken to where the children are who may not often get the opportunity to see live theatre and to see how much fun it can be. Hopefully some will then be tempted to come to the Community Centre to see some of our other productions or to see one of the fantastic FADLOS shows. It is also possible to put this on because of the excellent Creative Arts East (CAE) organisation which makes this kind of thing possible and affordable for small groups like ours.

Hello, I am Katie, a Foot Health Practioner. I take appointments for home visits in Wells, Fakenham, Holt, Sheringham and their surrounding villages. This is a valuable service to patients who are primarily housebound or in rural villages with little means of transport.

Sarah Gallichan, Head Teacher said “Fakenham Infant School are very excited to watch the performance. It’s an amazing opportunity for our children to experience live theatre. We’re very grateful to Active Fakenham for arranging it for us.”

Richard added, “It has been a pleasure working with the school. In what is now the tenth year Active Fakenham has been operating in the town. Although we are not a funding organisation, we have also been able to donate to, and support, the Friends of Fakenham Junior School, Sculthorpe School and Fakenham First Focus. It is by working together and supporting each other that local organizations like ours can make a small difference to the quality of lives of local people and visitors to the town”

Rescue Wooden Boats

This is a reminder about our exciting Maritime Heritage Festival, which is taking place at Tugboat Yard, East Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea on Saturday and Sunday July 23 & 24. Plans are well under way!

We are expecting at least eighteen historic local wooden crab boats and whelkers to gather on Tugboat pontoon, arriving on Friday July 22 and being on display on both Saturday and Sunday July 23 and 24. There will be a spectacular Flotilla on Saturday 23 July starting at 2pm when all the boats will motor in convoy to the harbour mouth and back so they can be viewed by visitors.

And NEW is the Little Blue Hut on Wells Quay, where you can now book tickets for memorable trips on Lucy Lavers (you can see details of trips and also book online here), as well as book trips on other boats, hire gillying sets and more! Wells Carnival www.wellscarnival.co.uk We are delighted to also be present at the main Wells Carnival with a stall in the Buttlands on both August 2 and August 6 – do come and find us!

The Flotilla will be led by our two flagships, Dunkirk Little Ship and former relief lifeboat at Wells, Lucy Lavers, and former Wells whelker, Harvester.

Projects and fundraising

There will be plenty of information available about the boats and our Maritime Heritage, and we are delighted there will be members of the fishing and boatbuilding families who worked or built these boats joining us.

Our next major project is to restore local whelker Bessie, a significant historic boat, also involved in the Dunkirk evacuation. We have started fundraising, but the costs are large so if you feel able to contribute, we would be most grateful. We welcome donations to support our work – if you are not already, do become a Friend of Rescue Wooden Boats If you would enjoy helping in any way, please email us at info@rescuewoodenboats.com, fill in the form at the Centre or call the Hon Secretary on 01485 210196. www.rescuewoodenboats.com charity no. 1144180

As well as the boats, there is much more to entertain you over the weekend! Rescue Wooden Boats will have a stall with lots of information and merchandise, there will be food stalls (Norfolk Thai, BBQ), a drink stall (Black Shuck Distillery), a model lifeboats display, activities and competitions. In addition, the Nelson Shantymen and Anto Morra (Irish folk singer) will be performing.

While you are nearby do visit our Maritime Heritage Centre - open on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays until the end of October from 11.00 - 4.00. Come and see the fascinating displays, stories and films of our local Maritime Heritage, set in the old Military Camp at Stiffkey Greenway NR23 1QF

Aid Africa - Fresh Outlook

Undoubtedly, this construction has impacted the whole community, encouraging hope and instilling pride in the school and the value of education. It’s expected to be in use for over a decade, thus continuing to benefit thousands in the future…...

It’s the end of an era—after more than 15 years, our Aid Africa Charity Shop in Shirehall Plain, Holt, will close mid-August.

Just a few examples of the amazing work that Aid Africa does in one of the poorest countries in the world, and additionally, we’ve just bought in 30 tonnes of maize (over 100,000 meals) for distribution to the most vulnerable from Christmas onwards—the hungriest time of the year. Our shop may be closing, but if you care, please stay in touch. If you’re not on our postal or email list, please contact us and we’ll make sure you have updates in the future.

The challenges of a new lease and voluntary staff shortage have forced the decision, but we’re looking forward to continuing our work in Malawi with your help.

Recently, out in the impoverished rural areas, after devastation from two cyclones, we built 5 houses for vulnerable families who’d lost their homes and helped others where the materials could be recycled. We renovated a Community Centre—the heart of a remote village—raising the floor and roof levels to mitigate future climate events. And then there’s toilets—not the most glamourous subject, but we built a public facility for dozens of villagers whose units had been destroyed by flooding, then went on to construct 50 more household toilets on higher ground.

And, if you can, please consider setting up a monthly Standing Order to support the work as we go forward without the shop’s regular income stream. Warmest thanks to all our friends, supporters, and customers over the years! Dave & Lynda, Aid Africa, 7 Shirehall Plain, Holt NR25 6HT— tlyndamills@aid-africa.com—www.aid-africa.com

But one building has really changed hundreds of lives—a girls’ toilet block in a local Primary School! This popular school has 910 pupils aged between 6 and 17 years (56% girls) plus 28 staff—and they had just 2 toilet cubicles for everybody! This of course brought challenges to health, an unpleasant polluted environment, and significantly, the loss of education for the 289 girls of menstruating age, absenting themselves from school several days each month because there were no washroom facilities for them to change in. Parents and the local community had tried to help in the past, but the pits filled, and structures had fallen in the storms and cyclonic weather. So, we set to work…. A huge pit was dug by hand, 2m deep x 6m long, lined with bricks, and the floor slab concreted over the top. Walls and floors were built and plastered, roofing timbers erected to support iron sheets, doors made and fitted with locks for privacy and finally a modesty wall was added. This sturdy girls’ unit has 4 toilet cubicles, plus a private washroom, so all the girls’ menstrual issues can be handled discreetly.

Thrigby Hall has recently celebrated an exciting new arrival – a very important Snow Leopard Cub!

Snow Leopards live throughout the mountains of Central Asia where their existence in the wild is threatened by illegal hunting for the fur and bone trade and declining numbers of wild prey due to hunting and competition with livestock for grazing. Sadly, they are also the victim of hunters when they threaten local livestock. The wild Snow Leopard population is in decline with less than 3,500 adult wild individuals left (1).

Conservation strategies and breeding programmes are key to the survival of this species in the wild. Breeding of snow leopards in zoological collections such as Thrigby Hall is carefully regulated by European breeding

Following an uneventful pregnancy, Nima gave birth to a beautiful cub on 18 May 2022 in a specially prepared cubbing box. The new cub is gaining in confidence and has already been wowing visitors as it explores alongside mum Nima. This important cub will remain with the parents for at least 18 months after which it will be mature enough to be transferred to another zoo within the European breeding programme, helping to preserve the future of this beautiful species.

Similarly to domestic cats these cubs require veterinary care to help keep them healthy and we are looking forward to being able to help Thrigby Hall care for this special new arrival. Keep an eye on Thrigby Hall’s facebook page to find out the sex and name of this special cub over the next few weeks!

successfully bred several cubs over the years which have gone on to play an important role in the survival of this species. Mum, Nima, and Dad, Mohan, are considered to have important genetics for the snow leopard population so the arrival of this new cub is a very exciting time!

There are many ways we can help save these amazing cats, including visiting and supporting collections such as Thrigby Hall who are helping with their conservation. More information on Snow Leopard conservation can be found at the Snow Leopard Trust.

Canine Keyboard Capers

ONE two three, ONE two three ... Does this appeal to you? A laid-back couple of hours with a bit of dancing (not line dancing or sequence - just good old-fashioned ballroom and a bit of pop and rock'n'roll even!) that almost anyone can do - or sing along to - or just socialise with friends, with a cuppa or two and some delicious cake - all for a fiver, in Briston. It would feature Mick Leary playing the music live at the Orla organ and could be a regular event if enough people are interested. We have quite a few people who have already shown some interest, but we need a few more to make it work. If you would like to give it a try, please let Carol know on 01263 860844 anytime, and we'll see if we can get something going! Ta!

The latest Briston Organ Show on Friday July 1st. was amazing for many reasons - the sheer skill of top UK organist Chris Powell, putting his Roland digital organ through its paces with such delights as 'The Great Escape March', 'Riders in the Sky', the overture from 'Orpheus In The Underworld', an Abba selection, 'The Rose', and a Count Basie styling of 'Have You Met Miss Jones?' These were all played in true orchestral sounds - you would never realise you were listening to an organ - but those who still like organs to sound like organs (!) got a wonderful selection of Theatre Organ favourites, some at breakneck speed and amazing manual dexterity - and then we finished with favourites from 'Last Night of The Proms' which sounded exactly like a full symphony orchestra.

The Three Frogs

What added to the interest though is that Chris and his wife Joanne also had their little dog 'Jess' with them - quite a comedian too - towards the end of the show, she wandered on to the stage and laid down by the organ, and for the encore she jumped up on the organ bench alongside Chris, obviously telling him she was tired and wanted to go home! The evening raised a lot of money for the Copeman Centre's funds, and also made well over £50 for the charity we support, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital.

Our show in August will be on Friday August 19th, when we will have Lewis Scott playing for us. This very talented young man is an absolute 'must' to hear, so if you would like tickets - just £8 each - 'phone Carol now on 01263 860844. The venue is the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston NR24 2LG, doors open at 7pm, and the show starts at 7.30pm. We have easy parking, comfortable seating, great refreshments and raffle, and wide level access which is ideal for disabled visitors. Do come and join us!

Three frogs went leaping o’er hill and dale, To catch the moon in a wooden pail. Then as they leapt down a lonely road, They met a fat and jolly toad. “Sir Toad”, all three at once did cry, “Have you seen the moon go by”? “Why yes indeed”, the toad replied. And laughed until he nearly died.

Chris Powell and Jess.

“The moon lies yonder, behind the hill, That’s where you’ll find him if you will”. So off leapt the frogs with cries of glee, And they’ll leap for all eternity. T.J. Linford

We heard about a 1960’s childhood from a local author who brought along various objects and items to demonstrate how we used to live. This brought many smiles and happy memories. On May 11th we had aninteresting talk from a badminton official and adjudicator at the 2012 and 2020 (2021) Olympic Games and many other high profile international competitions. She spoke about her role as an official and line judge, her selection to travel the world representing Britain for 8 years and showed us several of the everyday and special occasion uniforms she was expected to wear. Some were more comfortable than others in hot weather! The 2012 London Olympics blazer was particularly notable by its clever inclusion of London landmarks in the design. Also, her various lanyard official passes, to be worn at all times, were adorned with small gifts and lovely small souvenirs. Needless to say, she has been and still is a very good badminton player herself. (Junior champion and adult coach) All this fitted in with her life as a farmer.

After the speaker we chat over a ‘cuppa’ and enjoy a fun raffle. Each member brings a small item to put in the raffle, so each person goes home with a prize. Bearing in mind Covid19 is still around, for peace of mind it is okay to wear a mask. The chairs are spaced apart in the hall which has good access. There is a large car park to the rear of the building and disabled facilities are available for wheelchair users inside the building. There is a nominal charge for each term of £10, carers are free. This term finishes on August 10th when we meet to enjoy a cream tea together at a local hotel. We look forward to welcoming you. The NHS in Norfolk and Waveney is urging those eligible for a COVID-19 spring booster but yet to come forward to take up the offer as soon as possible. The NHS nationally has invited more than five million people in total to get their spring booster in line with JCVI guidance as part of the world-leading NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme. In Norfolk and Waveney, we’re urging those that haven’t come forward to do so as soon as possible, to protect themselves and others around them. Tricia D’Orsi, Director of Nursing-designate for NHS Norfolk and Waveney said: “We know that vaccination is the best form of protection against COVID-19 and it’s vital that people understand there is still time to have their spring booster vaccination if they are eligible. Our vaccination teams continue to do an amazing job of making sure that all those who are eligible get their vaccine across Norfolk and Waveney.” Kate Keeling, Head of Immunisation & Health Inequalities, NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “We are really pleased that so many people in Norfolk and Waveney have come forward and had their COVID-19 vaccinations. For those who have yet to have their COVID-19 vaccination or indeed spring booster, it’s really easy to attend one of the many sites administering vaccinations. We cannot recommend enough, the importance of everyone eligible, regardless of their age, having the COVID-19 vaccination to protect themselves, their family, and the wider local community.” Encouraging everyone eligible to get their Spring Booster vaccine now will also mean that individuals who are likely to be eligible for an autumn dose will have had their Spring Booster with the right gap between doses to help extend protection over winter, and against any possible rise in infection levels. The autumn programme will be determined once the JCVI finalise the guidance for the next phase of the COVID-19 vaccination programme. People aged 75 and over, older adult care home residents and those who are immunosuppressed have been able to get their spring booster since 21 March. Spring booster jab appointments can be booked quickly and conveniently on the NHS website and people that can’t go online can book by phoning 119. Please note appointments for the Spring Booster must be made on the National Booking Service, they are not available at walk-in centres. Find out more about the Spring Booster programme here. For the National Booking site visit; NHS national booking service online at nhs.uk/covid-vaccination. Alternatively, bookings can be made by calling 119. It is important to remind people that regular hand washing, wearing a face covering, using sanitiser stations, and avoiding crowded spaces are all basic steps of infection prevention and control that we can all take to help stop the spread of germs and viruses.

LOOKING FOR A HOME

After six years of faultless tenancy, the property I currently rent is being sold, and I have been given notice to vacate by the end of July. At the age of seventy eight not quite what I was anticipating, so I am now urgently searching for a new ‘home’ for the remainder of the journey.

I’m looking for an affordable long term rent, a small cottage in Holt, or near villages, for myself and my well behaved Jack Russell. A patch of garden and a parking space would be a bonus. I would be very grateful to hear of anything suitable. References available, many thanks, Malcolm Mellor.

Jubilee Street Parties

Jubilee Weekend

Dear Jo, I expect you will be inundated with jubilee photos and parties, but I just wondered if you would be interested in Hendrie Road/Kenwyn Close street party we held on the 4th June where we raised £155 for the Tree House Café in Charles Road, Holt. I presented a cheque to Rachel and Lorna at the café on the 9th June and have attached a couple of photos of the street party and the cheque presentation. Kind Regards, Bishop John

Dear Jo, The thing I will take away from the recent Jubilee weekend, as much as the events themselves, is the enormous sense of good-will, and the generous way lots of people, gave of their time and energy, to make events and occasions happen, and to bring the community together. Particular thanks should go to Gemma (the Town Clerk), Rodney (The Mayor), along with other members of the Town Council, who were constantly working away behind the scenes to make events the success they were. Also, to the Community Centre team (Carolyn, Anthony, June, Anwen, Pauline, Bryony, Nadia, and all) who orchestrated or enabled events to happen, not least the Sunday Jubilee Lunch which sadly had to be moved there when rain threatened festivities outside. People certainly seemed to enjoy themselves, and there was a real sense of a community coming together in celebration. The way young (who made lovely Jubilee table decorations) and old helped, not least to clear-up after events, brought a wonderful sense of goodwill, belonging and an inclusiveness.

The Sheringham and District Philatelic Society met on Monday 13th June to hear about the early stamps of what is now called Papua New Guinea. Peter Boyce, from Norwich Philatelic Society, showed 2 German New Guinea stamps, overprinted by the Australians, with the letters GRI, referring to King George V, when the islands were taken over by Australia in 1914. The islands then became the NW Pacific Islands, using overprinted Australian kangaroo stamps. From 1921 onwards, stamps featuring aspects of the islands e.g., birds of paradise, were printed. The islands were then taken over by the British and became known as Papua, and eventually Papua New Guinea and gained Independence in 1975. The second half of his presentation took us on an Archaeological Tour of Athens! Peter had lived in Athens for a number of years and had photos, Post Office produced postcards and stamps illustrating all the famous historic sites of Athens. The next meeting, on August 8th, should be just as varied with 10 sheet displays by members. Visitors and new members welcome. West Runton Church Hall at 7.30pm. Contact Gerry Smith on 01263 579529

My First Car – Freedom and Frustration

July at the Museum of the Broads

Just before the summer holiday rush, the Museum of the Broads, at the heritage Stalham Staithe, is a perfect place to bring a picnic, family and friends. We also have trails and activities for families, and dogs are welcome too!

How many remember their first car? Most, I guess. Mine was a sit-up-andbeg Ford Popular. It cost £160 and quickly became a mixture of exhilaration and frustration. Being free from the uncertainties of bus timetables was great. But the car wasn’t exactly state of the art.

OK it hadn’t got a heater. But it hadn’t got brakes either - well, not in the modern, meaningful sense of the word. You had to plan ahead if you wanted to make sure of seeing tomorrow.

Then there was the gear lever, which was more like a walking stick, and which seemed only vaguely connected to the gearbox. Getting a gear meant stirring it around hopefully and waiting to find out which one you got.

For a unique river trip, book seats on our steamboat, Falcon, or our accessible electric boat, Marsh Harrier, and enjoy spotting wildlife or just relaxing on the water.

The windscreen wiper was a thing of mystery. If you went up hill it would slow down. If the hill was steep or long the wiper would decide to halt altogether. An engineer friend told me it worked off the carburettor. Such were the wonders of modern science in those days!

The Museum itself has a new ‘sandbox’ interactive, courtesy of the Broads Authority. It is part of our new exhibition, From Sails to Blades – How wind power shaped the Broads, and shows changes to the landscape plus showcases many of our special wind pumps.

The car had those semaphore indicators which flopped out when you wanted to turn. But it had its own agenda and would usually decide not to operate until I had gone round the corner. In fairness the car did give me a freedom I had never had before. It also caused me more than one very embarrassing moment.

We are celebrating Norfolk Day on Wednesday 27 July with free entry to the Museum. Come along and discover a bit more about this part of Norfolk – its Broads! Open Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, full details on our website: www.museumofthebroads.org.uk @MuseumBroads on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram The Museum of the Broads, Poor’s Staithe, Stalham, NR12 9DA, 01692 581681

Fancy dress parties were all the rage then and I was going to one dressed as a gorilla. The host told me where to find his place. So, I turned right at the traffic lights and followed the unlit road. Very soon it became clear this was not where I should be. So, after stirring the gearbox I eventually found reverse and went to turn round.

Aw wonderful onderful place place

The car came to a very gentle rest, refused to move and the engine died. I got out wondering if I had reversed into a black hole. Turned out it was a large pile of sand which had blocked the exhaust pipe.

to to mee meett & eat eat with friends

I managed to push the vehicle off the sand and set about finding something to unblock the exhaust. In those days cars had a thing called a starting handle. Having groped around inside I eventually found it - under the driver’s seat.

It fitted the exhaust pipe perfectly (must have been a designed for such occasions?). With the starting handle well and truly engaged I was starting to clear it when I felt a presence. Looking round I saw a pair of big black boots attached to some formal-looking trousers. “Evening sir,” said the policeman. “If I may be as bold as to say I think you have the starting handle in the wrong end of the car.” He then turned to go and as he did so I heard him say “even a gorilla would know that, ha ha….”

North Norfolk Railway Tracks Back to the Sixties

to transporting visitors back six decades to the time of drainpipe trousers, mini-skirts, flower power and pop music while the locomotives and carriages of the era will doubtless evoke memories for many.”

The North Norfolk Railway is to host a Sixties Weekend on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July recalling the atmosphere of the transformative decade with steam and diesel trains working side-by-side plus live music from the era and displays of some of the distinctive road vehicles of the time.

Full details of the events and activities, including train times, can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk. Passengers booking in advance via the website enjoy a generous discount on train fares.

A half-hourly train service will operate between Sheringham and Holt with rover tickets allowing passengers to hop on and off all day to travel behind several different locomotives and to see the activities at Weybourne Station. Here, classic cars, including Minis and built to the iconic designs of Sir Alexander Issigonis will be on display along with scooters that were so much a part of the culture of the time. Other exhibits will include a handful of caravans which were luxury items at the time.

Following the event, the NNR’s summer services continue with two steam locomotives and one diesel train scheduled to be in action each day until 11 September when the line’s autumn programme commences with steam and heritage diesel services until 30 October - full details can be found at www.nnrailway.co.uk.

To help conjure up the ambience of the period, local band, “Airmail”, will be playing live on Saturday while on Sunday “The Austin Beats” will perform covers from the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones and other popular bands that gave the “Swinging Sixties” their nickname. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to have a go at traditional sideshows that were a feature of fetes and fairgrounds in the 1960s. Many of the line’s team of volunteers will be sporting railway uniforms typical of those worn at the time and visitors are invited to come dressed in the fashion of the decade.

The railway’s two steam engines that were built by British Railways – 4MT No. 76084 and 9F No. 92203 “Black Prince” are scheduled to be in action for the two days. The pair were almost new when the 1960s dawned, having been constructed in 1957 and 1959 respectively, but both were withdrawn in 1967 as BR’s modernisation plan took hold.

Class 37 diesel, D6732, which celebrated its 60th Birthday earlier this year will also be hauling passenger trains along with visiting Class 25, D7659 which will be making its final appearance on the East Anglian line before returning to its base at Peak Rail. All four locomotives will be hauling carriages that were in use in the 1960s.

Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System

responsibility for our own health and wellbeing. So, our Integrated Care System will have at its heart a constant process of listening to people, learning from their experience and acting on what we hear.

Launch of NHS Norfolk and Waveney and the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care System – 1 July 2022 NHS Norfolk and Waveney has replaced the area’s clinical commissioning group, as part of changes to the health and care landscape which see each part of the country have what is known as an Integrated Care System (ICS).

“We now have a unique opportunity to build on what we’ve achieved, to tackle the backlog of waiting lists left by the pandemic and to transform and integrate care around the needs of people, families and communities. By working together, we can help people lead longer, healthier, happier lives.”

Tracey Bleakley, Chief Executive Officer of NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: “In Norfolk and Waveney our NHS organisations, councils, public services and voluntary and community partners are working much more closely together. We are joining up to tackle all the things that affect our health and wellbeing, listen to the priorities of our communities, local people and patients and tackle some of the biggest challenges we are all facing.

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) are partnerships of organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined up health and care services to improve the lives of people in their area. As a result of the new Health and Care Act, Norfolk and Waveney ICS will have legal status and will include a statutory Integrated Care Partnership (ICP), and a new NHS Integrated Care Board (ICB) called NHS Norfolk and Waveney.

“This is a new and exciting way of working, creating a genuine partnership that will make a positive difference to local people and help join up health and social care. This is the culmination of many years of effort to build partnership working across the NHS, local authorities, the third sector and patient groups.”

NHS Norfolk and Waveney replaces NHS Norfolk and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). As well as taking on the existing responsibilities of the CCG, the new organisation will be accountable for the performance and finances of the NHS across Norfolk and Waveney - a total budget of £2 billion a year.

Cllr Bill Borrett, Chair of the Norfolk and Waveney Integrated Care Partnership (ICP), said: “Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic we saw just how vital it is that all the organisations in the health and care sector work together to meet the needs of the people of Norfolk and Waveney. Each part of the system is staffed by incredibly hard working, dedicated people, but if we don’t make sure their work is coordinated across the board, we won’t get the best results for our communities. “The new ICS is the first step towards a wider ranging, holistic approach to health and social care, that our residents expect and deserve. I look forward to creating a system where the whole process, from the first GP appointment to the long-term care package, gives people consistent, informed support that doesn’t require them to spend hours answering the same questions over and over to different organisations. There’s a lot of work for the ICS to do, but that work has already started and will ensure that people across Norfolk and Waveney will receive health and care services that meet their needs across the board.”

Norfolk and Waveney ICP will also be established as a formal alliance of partners with a role in improving the health and wellbeing of our residents. Norfolk and Waveney ICP will bring together the NHS, local government, the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector and other partners to focus on prevention, wider social and economic factors affecting people’s health and reducing health inequalities.

In Norfolk and Waveney, we have already achieved a lot by working in partnership; this has been strengthened through our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes have been made possible by different organisations – NHS hospitals, GPs, mental health and community health services, local councils, care homes and social workers, voluntary and community organisations and others – joining forces to agree and plan for local people’s needs.

Alex Stewart, Chief Executive of Healthwatch Norfolk, said: “On behalf of Norfolk and Waveney patients, we welcome anything that brings the varied areas of health and social care together. Time and time again, people feel that different people, services and departments do not talk to each other, care is fragmented, and patients and their families have to repeat their experiences over and over again.

As a whole system, working together, we’ve set ourselves three goals. Collectively, we want to make sure that people can live as healthy a life as possible, make sure that people only have to tell their story once and to make Norfolk and Waveney the best place to work in health and care. Like all Integrated Care Systems in England, we will work to:

“It is encouraging that the aim of this new system is to ensure health and social care works more closely together and we will do all we can to help with this process ensuring ICS leaders are aware of what patients, their loved ones and carers feel about how they are looked after across Norfolk.” www.improvinglivesnw.org.uk

• improve outcomes in population health and healthcare • tackle inequalities in outcomes, experience and access • enhance productivity and value for money • support broader social and economic development.

Nick Hart Gig at NWT Cley Marshes

Rt Hon, Patricia Hewitt, Chair of the Norfolk and Waveney ICS and Chair of NHS Norfolk and Waveney said: “There is nothing more important than our own and our family’s health. It’s why, as a country, we treasure the NHS, social care services and its dedicated staff. But vital though it is, the NHS only accounts for a fraction of our physical and mental health and wellbeing. All the rest depends on other things: our environment - whether we have decent work, enough money, close family and friends, a warm home, clean air - and our own lifestyles.

Nick Hart is an award-winning folk singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work with English folk song is rapidly gaining him a reputation as one of the most acclaimed performers of his generation.

His first two solo albums were released to critical acclaim and this event sees him performing songs from his third album ‘Nick Hart Sings Ten English Folk Songs’, recorded during the first lockdown of 2020.

“The development of our Integrated Care System is a unique opportunity to bring together the many different partners who support the health and wellbeing of Norfolk and Waveney’s almost 1.1 million residents: the staff and organisations working in the NHS and social care; local government with its responsibilities for public health, social care, housing, leisure and the environment; the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector; and many others in the public and private sectors.

Deprived of a sound engineer and locked away in a house full of strange instruments, he was afforded the time and space to explore different approaches to the accompaniment of traditional song. Nick's distinctive guitar playing is augmented here by harmonium, lyre, viols and a host of percussion and woodwinds.

“Although we started working together well before the pandemic, the COVID-19 vaccination programme showed how our GPs, nurses and other staff in primary and community care could work together with their local council, community and faith groups, mobilising volunteers and drawing on the support of the wider system to create one of the most successful vaccination schemes in the country. That local approach will be the foundation of our Integrated Care System, supported by health and wellbeing partnerships that bring together local government with the voluntary sector, the NHS and other key partners. “Just as local people know best what their community needs if they are to flourish, each of us is the expert in our own lives. And all of us have a

email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Ewan Carr said: “Nick’s repertoire of songs is drawn largely from his native East Anglia and I can think of nowhere more atmospheric to hear his new creations performed than with a backdrop of our beautiful, wild coastline. “We look forward to welcoming you to NWT Cley Marshes café and visitor centre for what will be a memorable evening of musicmaking. Why not make a day of it, and head out onto the reserve for a wild wander before the concert begins?” “A cult classic in the making” - Grizzly Folk. "Superb"- The Guardian

An Angelic Afternoon at Weybourne WI

Members of Weybourne WI met at the Village Hall on Wednesday, 4th May. Celia Howe, President, welcomed everyone. Our business meeting covered details of forthcoming interest groups, results of the recent Silver Salver Competition and village plans for the Jubilee weekend, including an event organised by the WI. We voted on the resolution for the National Annual Meeting.

Our speaker for the afternoon was Diane Evans, who told us about ‘Angel Packs’. The idea for these packs came about after Diane’s sister Debbie witnessed an accident in Sheringham High Street and she had nothing available to help the victim, until the emergency services arrived. The man who was injured called Debbie an ‘angel’ when she comforted him and that is how the name for the packs originated.

Diane and her group of friends, Sisters in Spirit, have been organising and distributing the packs around the town for the past 10 years.

Poppy Café’s Jubilee Tea Party

What a happy occasion our Tea Party on 7th June turned out to be. Everyone arrived in their ‘party best’ and immediately entered into the spirit of the event, spurred on when entering the room festooned with bunting, flowers and helium balloons.

A large table was filled with an array of tempting, goodies: sausage rolls, delicate smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches, Devonshire scones, shortbread crowns and of course cake in many forms. Another table displayed Jubilee napkins and a variety of pretty porcelain tea services to be used for our guests’ refreshments.

All were in a festive mood and Deborah was very regal in red with a jaunty union jack hat! Most enjoyed the general conversation but some more determined souls tackled the royal word searches and quizzes: first and foremost, ‘What does the Queen carry in her handbag?’ Other activities included colouring in pictures of the Queen, her crown and Buckingham Palace and doing jigsaws.

Later, Elizabeth joined the party with Louie her PAT dog who enjoyed the attention and extra treats! The celebrations ended with some rousing singing of Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and God save the Queen, ably led by Valerie, after which there was an opportunity for photographs to be taken with the Queen by Lee.

Everyone left in a very happy mood, having enjoyed the morning, with a number taking home a treat for later. Holt & District Dementia Support is ready to welcome you - either as someone who is living with dementia or as someone who may wish to consider becoming a volunteer for our charity. Our services include Poppy Café every Monday and Tuesday morning, a Home Visiting service and monthly Poppy Carers session. For further details:

Prizes For Blakeney Rowing Club.

Members of your local rowing club have been enjoying the regular social rows towards Blakeney Point or Cley. However, there has also been an element of competition in recent weeks. There were three podium finishes at this year’s King’s Lynn Hanse Festival on Saturday 11th June! It was a great afternoon’s racing. The men’s crew gained second place in their race and there were third place finishes for the mixed and the ladies’ crews. See further details and pictures of the races on the club website at crablakeney.wordpress.com. There were so many highlights during the afternoon. One of the great moments was the race for second place between Blakeney and King’s Lynn in the mixed crew event. Coxes pitted their wits against each other amidst the clashing oars and hard rowing. The times were identical! The picture with this article shows you just how close it was. The judges had a difficult task deciding the finishing order. The Round Canvey Island Race on 2nd July was also great fun. The Blakeney crew rowed the fourteen miles around the island in a very creditable time. Conditions were sunny, but windy, and it was great to meet rowers from so many different clubs. On a very different note, Sunday 3rd July saw the first Robin Combe Memorial Flotilla. Craft of all kinds gathered to travel together towards Blakeney Point. Blakeney Rowing Club was represented by a crew in one of the club’s beautiful skiffs. The whole event was a fitting tribute to Robin, a much-missed gentleman. If you want to know more about the club, or try skiff rowing for yourselves, contact club captain Humphrey at hborgnis@icloud.com. Beginners and returning rowers are always welcome to contact the club. Remember, you can keep up with the club’s activities on Instagram, on Facebook and on the club notice board on the Carnser. Come along and enjoy a row this summer. Stay safe! Barry Howes.

From Holt Holistic Centre

Hello, my name is Michelle and I’m a Foot health practitioner working in the North Norfolk area. I’d like to just let you know that on Monday afternoons I am joining the great team at Holt Holistic Centre, 10 Station Road, Holt and I will be running a Foot health clinic for anyone in need of Footcare.

Can I just take a moment to highlight why you might need my services, firstly foot health checks help to diagnose conditions and treat them at the initial phase reducing risks and minimising the spread of possible infections. Our feet carry the full weight of our bodies and play a vital part in our daily activities, we often overlook our foot health but why? They are so important to us. Having problem feet could be affecting your mobility or make it uncomfortable to wear certain footwear or play sports. Maintaining a good foot health can make you more mobile! These regular checks help those with diabetes treat and control any possible damage caused by poor circulation. The weather changes so often and some people feel self-conscious when not being able to go barefoot, wear open toe shoes but treatments for athletes’ foot or dry and cracked heels is easy with the assistance of myself. I offer the full range of maintenance needed from nail trimming, corn removal, callus and verruca treatment as well as diabetic foot care. If you need my help and would like to come and see me, please do make an appointment. For your peace of mind, I am qualified, fully insured and DBS checked. I do look forward to meeting you. I can be contacted on 07919 450999 Michelle Geere, Foot Health Practitioner.

Helping your children onto the property ladder By Diane Raven, Chartered Legal Executive, Hayes + storr.

If you have savings, you may prefer to help your child now rather than pass on those assets through inheritance, but it is important to make sure you still have enough left for your own needs. These could change over time, for example when you retire or if you need long term care. Have you thought about:

• if you or your partner die or become seriously ill and need care; • if you were to divorce; • if your child divorces or remarries; • if your child becomes unable to work or earn as much; or • implications on any siblings or other dependants. Having a written record will help with the administration of your estate and reduce the risk of misunderstanding or a dispute between family members. Making a gift or a loan Deciding at the outset whether your contribution is a gift or a loan is key. For a gift of a lump sum: most mortgage lenders will require a ‘gifted deposit letter’ which confirms the relationship between you and the recipient and that you have no beneficial interest in the property. For a loan: you should set out the terms for repayment and any interest payable.

Registering a charge at the land registry The preparation of a legal charge and its registration at the Land Registry could be the most secure way to protect your interest, ultimately allowing you to force the sale of the property should the borrower fail to repay the loan. While your child may have every intention of repaying at the time of the loan, circumstances can change, for example through relationship breakdown or premature death.

A declaration of trust If your child is buying with a friend or partner, we can prepare a declaration of trust to take account of your contribution and ensure that you can influence the treatment of its value in the future.

Prenuptial or postnuptial agreement If you are making a significant financial contribution, you may also want to protect it from a potential marriage break-up with a pre- or postnuptial agreement.

Personal guarantees Instead of contributing a lump sum, you could help your child by becoming a parental guarantor or a joint borrower. In either case, you would potentially be liable for all the outstanding debt which could put your own home at risk.

Springboard mortgages A springboard mortgage allows someone with a small deposit, typically five per cent, to borrow if their parents place an equivalent proportion of

the property’s value in cash in a deposit account as security. The mortgage lender can access those savings to make up any missed payments.

Tax and other implications If you have a beneficial interest in the property or intend to share in any uplift in its value, you should carefully consider your potential liability for capital gains tax. A lump sum contribution should not create any immediate liability for inheritance tax. However, if you die within seven years, HMRC could class it as part of your estate. Your contribution could also affect your eligibility for funding for long term care from your local authority, who could argue you have intentionally deprived yourself of your assets.
