Norfolk photographer is the overall winner of this year’s International Photographer of the Year exhibition The International Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to the National Trust’s Sheringham Park for a third year this autumn, featuring more images than ever before.

Located in the tranquil surroundings of the Bower Garden, over 40 images from around the world will be on display, as part of this year’s exhibition. The overall winner though is a Norfolk photographer, for his autumnal image taken in Snowdonia.

“With thousands of fantastic entries from all over the world, it was a real honour to discover that the judges had chosen my image as the overall winner,” Lee Acaster from Diss revealed. “The shot itself was taken on a rainy autumn day. I noticed there were a few leaves left on a blackened birch tree, which were highlighted against the inky water of the lake behind. Being quite abstract in nature, the image won’t appeal to everybody, but I was thrilled that the judges liked it as much as I did. I think the ambiguity of the subject, it’s not immediately clear what you are looking at, was a big part of its appeal to them.

“There is no substitute for seeing photographs printed on a large scale to appreciate them properly, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the exhibition in the wonderful surroundings of Sheringham Park. There can hardly be a better place to appreciate nature photography.”

The exhibition also includes the ‘Breathing Spaces’ category, which is sponsored by the National Trust. This year it was won by Anil Sud for his Mountain Fog picture taken in Colorado. Runners-up images in this category also show landscapes from Derbyshire to Italy.

This year’s competition also features a new category on Humphry Repton, who designed Sheringham Park and stated it was his most favourite work.

The 2018 exhibition will display the winning images from this category, as part of the celebration of Repton’s life - 200 years on from his death.

Curtis McGlinchey, from International Garden Photographer of the Year said “We’re thrilled to be returning to Sheringham Park with this anniversary exhibition, which will be the largest outdoor display at any venue to date.

Our relationship with Sheringham Park continues to grow as we work together to champion the beauty and importance of plants, gardens and green spaces, both in the UK and around the world.’’

The free exhibition opened at the National Trust’s Sheringham Park on Saturday 2 September, for two months and can be viewed daily from dawn to dusk.

A most interesting talk entitled ‘A visual presentation of the jetties and piers of Cromer’ was given to us on Tuesday 5 September by Alistair Murphy, curator of Cromer Museum.

He began by explaining that in the nineteenth century, as many seaside resorts developed, they found that a pier for strolling along (as opposed to a jetty for tying up boats) was an attraction to visitors, even more so when the railways came to this region. People would come for the fresh air, the ozone, and even, in some cases, to buy bottled seawater, sold for its healthy qualities!

HANDYMAN Alistair took us through the history of jetties and piers in Cromer (with excellent illustrations), Clint Brown starting in 1780 with a jetty which was more of a short breakwater; this was followed by various Courses 2 Main for £14.00! jetties and piers, each time longer than the previous ones, leading up to the construction of the FREE coffee with this voucher Property present pier in 1901. There was initially a bandstand where the pavilion is now. It was interesting at the same time to learn something of the history of the seafront and of the buildings nearby.

Residents across North Norfolk are being warned to avoid paying private companies that charge for appealing against council-tax bands.

What makes matters even worse in this instance is that some of these third parties are trying to impose a fee simply for filling out a form, regardless of whether the application to lower the council-tax band proves successful or not.

Cllr Wyndham Northam, NNDC Cabinet member for Revenues and Benefits, said â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you are a council-tax payer and you want to appeal your council-tax band, it is easy to do this yourself and there is absolutely no charge for doing so.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some private operators are very clever at selling their services, but signing up with them means paying an unnecessary fee and receiving absolutely nothing in return that council-tax payers canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do themselves.â&#x20AC;?

NNDC warns people to be wary of all cold-callers, especially those demanding bank details. People should never hand over their bank details or other personal information in situations such as this and should always make further inquiries if in any doubt.

Focus on Family Law

The divorce of Petra Ecclestone Neale Grearson and husband James Stunt is reported to have £5.5 billion at stake following the breakup of their marriage.

Miss Ecclestone is the daughter of Bernie Ecclestone the Formula 1 tycoon.

The Judge in the case was reported as urging them to settle their divorce in private as he warned of the potential effect on their children of a public hearing and the need for compromise.

Miss Ecclestone was stated to have tried to find a consensual approach to the ending of the marriage but that had been rejected by her husband. Sadly it is often one party who feels that they have tried everything to reach a compromise and it is the other that has not.

Petra and James had been arguing about whether their relationship had broken down and the Judge said it was a “very sad state of affairs” that the question of whether the relationship had broken down could not be determined between the parties. Miss Ecclestone’s Barrister said

“it is more than unfortunate. It is absolutely scandalous. It is completely obvious this marriage has irretrievably broken down. What is going on is no more than a charade”. In the background appears to be the major issue over a Pre-Nuptial Agreement that had been signed but in the absence of any agreement the Judge dealing with the case had no alternative but to set down a framework for a series of hearings to take place.

What has been suggested by newspapers as the longest divorce battle in Britain has hit the headlines. This relates to what has been quoted as a sixteen year “war” between a former British Airways Captain and his third wife arguing over money since they split in 2001. The even bigger shock and concern to the parties involved in the sixteen year divorce battle is likely to be how much it has cost them in legal fees let alone emotional damage.

Erpingham Festival of Crafts at Erpingham with Calthorpe Village Hall on Saturday 28 October from 10am – 4pm - this is a charity event to replace the lead stolen from the roof of St Mary’s Church, Erpingham

The replacement locomotive Pannier Tank 7714 which was provided by the Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) Plc and the SVR Pannier Tank Fund at very short notice provided the additional interest.

Passenger numbers over the weekend were good and, apart from a short delay to services late on Friday, the weekend went with almost perfect timing.

Locomotives featured during the weekend were visitor 53809 7F courtesy of its owner John Moorhouse and the West Somerset Railway, Pannier Tank 7714 already mentioned supported by based locomotives 76084 Standard 4, the B12, WD 90775 and 9F Black Prince (now owned by the NNR) joined also by long term visitor N2 loco1744.

There were a number of different train make-ups including the recently introduced Suburban Rake

looking resplendent in its Crimson colour scheme. The Freight train also provided something different while double headers featuring the WD and the Pannier gave very rare photo opportunities for enthusiasts.

Initial indications are that this Gala was the best supported since the visit of Tornado back in 2013.

The play traces the story of Lady Bracknell, one of the greatest comedy creations in the English Theatre. As the curtain rises we hear off stage, the final moments of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, when Jack Worthing discovers every obstacle has been removed from marriage to his beloved Gwendolen.

Doust’s comedy has been written for a man to play Lady Bracknell, thus further emphasising the ‘pantomime dame’ elements of the character’s snobbery and obsession with social standing.

CHOIRfest 2017 An evening of song from the choirs of North Norfolk

To celebrate the wealth of vocal music making in North Norfolk, Coast Arts are hosting the second CHOIRfest, another exciting evening of choir music in the famous Cromer Pavilion Pier Theatre on 1 October at 7pm.

The evening will be hosted by Nick Conrad from BBC Radio Norfolk

Final preparations are under way for the 2017 Coast Arts CHOIRfest, which promises to be an amazing evening with over 220 singers performing in the famous Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre.

“Eight choirs from around the area are coming together for the evening,” said Stephen Richards, musical director Southrepps Chorale, who is bringing the choirs together with Tony Knight who directed the festival in 2016. “There are some great choirs around the area,” Tony added, “all working hard on their own music and each with an individual style; this is a chance for the choirs to work and perform together. The evening will feature a range of classical and contemporary music, with each choir singing pieces on their own and all having fun singing pieces together.”

Barry Meadows from Coast Arts added “Last year's CHOIRfest was a real hit with both the choirs and the audience. We were so overwhelmed with choirs who wanted to sing this year we had to turn some down – the Pier Theatre can't expand enough to cater for all the choirs and leave space for the audience!

Once again we expect an evening of beautiful songs sung to the natural background music of the sea thundering beneath the theatre – with over 220 singers it really will be a wonderful night of music”.

Back in the USSR

The Russians will achieve their long held aim to take over a Top Secret British military base this October as part of a special exhibition at the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum. The Hammer and Sickle red flag with fly over the former RAF Air Radar base along with music from the Red Army Choir. But, there is no need to worry as it is all part of an exhibition to coincide with the centenary of the October Revolution that brought the communists to power in Russia.

The site at Neatishead near Horning, came into its own during the 50 years stand off between the West and the Communist East, known as the Cold War. The special exhibition features a unique collection of Soviet Era socialist realist propaganda posters, a trademark of our one-time foes.

The exhibition also includes art from some contemporary Russian artists, who give their interpretation of Cold War themes.

After the Second World War, the RAF Radar station at Neatishead turned its attention to monitoring the skies for Soviet aircraft activity the so-called 'Russian Bears’ that were probing our NATO allies’ airspace and our own. Now that the Cold War is over, the exhibition attempts to look at some of the artwork from the Communist era with fresh eyes and admire the creativity and imagery in an historical context.

The Soviet propaganda posters were the forerunners of many future propaganda posters, but their distinctive style, depicting noble workers and Soviet heroes, is instantly recognisable. The posters, most from the

1970s and 1980s, feature workers and space-race themes including the Soviet cosmonaut and pilot, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin.

Work by rising Russian art stars is also featured in the exhibition.

There will be paintings by Gennadiy V. Ivanov, whose bold large-scale canvasses show, a mastery of paint. Saint Petersburg based artist Vasili Kiselev, who produces the most touching animations with haunting themes that stay with you long after you watched them, is also featured, along with sculptures by conceptual artist Sophia Shuvalova

The exhibition is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 3 – 31 October 10am-5pm. Admission charges apply for museum entrance, but the exhibition is free.

This is the first temporary exhibition to be held at the museum which is home to the radar and air defence story and is the largest museum in North Norfolk, with over 20 rooms and more than 10,000 exhibits both inside and out.

It’s a Dibley Christmas!

Local actor Greg Pope, who works in Cromer, is reprising his role of Frank Pickle, in The Vicar of Dibley Christmas at Sheringham Little Theatre this November. Greg and almost all the original cast are continuing the story of the Village of Dibley from the original production in 2016.

After performing in Sheringham, the company will be taking the production to Great Yarmouth’s St. Georges Theatre for a final Greg Pope performance on 25 November. This will be part of the Great Yarmouth Christmas Fayre and switching on the Christmas lights weekend.

St. Georges Theatre want to start their own amateur group, based at the theatre It is hoped that this performance will inspire would-be actors and stage crew to join this new, exciting project.

The village of Dibley is still the quirky, chaotic place that we all know and love, and Christmas is on its way. But first Geraldine has much to do. She has news to break that will leave David Horton in shock! She must find a way to celebrate the anniversary of the Churches saint, which results in a stunning revelation from a Dibley Parish Councillor, and she must find a way to break the winning run of David Horton in the village quiz. A task made more challenging when she realises that his opponent is Alice.

Can she succeed with any of these challenges before the Yuletide season is upon them? Will the village nativity be the final straw? Another ‘first’ for Cromer Walkers are Welcome

Cromer Walkers are Welcome group have teamed up with Poppyland Brewery to produce and promote a very special brew aimed at walkers and all who appreciate delicious hand crafted ale.

The idea came from Hilary Cox, chair of the Cromer group, who has a long background in the publican trade having run The Cottage on Louden Rd for many years. She contacted Martin Warren to see if he was interested in creating a new special beer for Cromer. This turned out to be a superb combination as Martin is also a keen walker, writer, historian and geologist, and he relished the challenge of creating a new beer using hops and herbs grown in his garden as well as locally sourced grain. With a reputation for ‘doing different’, this award winning microbrewery has produced a truly delicious, complex and refreshing Walkers Are Welcome ale.

This new bottled saison beer is available from Poppyland Brewery on West Street, The Norfolk Food and Drink Co. in Tucker St, and from outlets in Sheringham, Wells and on Norwich Market.

Cromer Walkers are Welcome were one of the first to start up in Norfolk, there are more than 100 Towns and villages all over Britain linked to the scheme and Cromer is acknowledged as a pro-active and innovative group. North Norfolk District Council agrees purchase of historic village shop

Decision guarantees the future of Itteringham Community Shop A village shop dating from 1637 which had been facing closure has been saved by North Norfolk District Council.

The future of the Itteringham Community Shop had been uncertain because its current owners have served notice on the Itteringham Community Association (ICA) to terminate the lease, and the notice expires on 8 October.

Show time fun for Norfolk Strays

A fun time was had by all who entered the dog show hosted by Animal Magic Dog Club at the Campaign to Protect Rural England summer fair held at Wolterton Hall. The dog show raised a tail wagging £210 which was split between CPRE and Norfolk Strays.

But a proposal to buy the shop and the adjoining Fair Meadow House has been approved.

The purchase means the shop will stay in its current location and will be leased to the ICA, and it represents a prudent investment for the Council in line with its Asset Commercialisation Strategy.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “This is an important community asset and it is fantastic that its future has been secured. There was a huge desire locally and further afield to see this shop saved. We are delighted to have helped achieve this for Itteringham and for the remarkable and dedicated community group which runs the shop.”

Cllr Judy Oliver, NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets and Commercialisation, said “As well as supporting the local community in Itteringham, this is also a sensible move from a commercial point of view. It will generate income for the Council above that achievable from a cash investment, and to be supporting the local community at the same time makes it a win-win.”

The ICA has successfully run the shop for 25 years and there is potential to expand the shop and café, subject to any necessary planning consent, into the currently unused gallery space.

Without this volunteer ran organisation local dogs picked up as strays that have served their mandatory seven days in the pound who remain unclaimed, would be put to sleep. Instead they’re cared for and often nursed back to health before they’re found that all important rescue space where they start their rehoming journey.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI volunteers were on their normal Tuesday evening training last month when the station received a call from the UK Coastguard at 8pm to task the Stationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Atlantic Howard Bell to search between Cart Gap to Horsey, as they had reports of a powered hang glider ditching into the sea around Winterton. At 8.30pm, the Coastguard tasked the Stationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s D Class Spirit of Berkhamsted with Helm Tim Grimmer crew Martin Gibbs and Sean Thurston to join Howard Bell with the search. Also involved were Sea Palling and Hemsby lifeboats and the coastguard helicopter.

By 10.30pm, the Spirit of Berkhamsted was forced to return to station due to the worsening sea conditions, along with Sea Palling and Hemsby lifeboats, Howard Bell and the helicopter carried on until 11.30pm when the Coastguard stood everybody down, Howard Bell returned to station by midnight.

Bacton to Walcott Development Agreement Signed North Norfolk District Council, Perenco UK and Shell UK have signed a Development Agreement to mark the official launch of the major coastal Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping Scheme.

The official signing took place at the beginning of September following a tour of the Bacton Gas Terminal, Bacton and Walcott villages. During the tour, attendees were briefed about the project by officers from North Norfolk District Council and scheme consultants Royal HaskoningDHV.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “This is a vitally important project for the UK and our east coast. We are proud to be working closely with Bacton Gas Terminal operators, Shell UK and Perenco, to enable this project to move forwards.”

Sinead Lynch, Shell UK Country Chair, said “Shell UK is proud to be a partner in this innovative sand-scaping scheme, which will help to protect this part of the Norfolk coastline.

“The Bacton Gas Terminal is an important energy asset for the UK, and we look forward to working with North Norfolk District council, the UK government and Bacton and Walcott communities, to ensure that we can realise the local and national benefits of the scheme.”

Laurent Combe, the Perenco UK General Manager, said “We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with North Norfolk District Council and the local communities on this innovative project to help reduce the flood risk at Bacton and Walcott whilst also securing key national infrastructure at the Bacton Terminal.”

It innovatively uses natural processes to reduce coastal flood and erosion risk, and it demonstrates the added value of organisations working in partnership to fund better coastal protection for the local community as well as this critical gas terminal.”

Community drop-in sessions were held in July to share more information about the proposals.

As well as holding the drop-in sessions people have been invited to demonstrate community support for the project through the JustGiving page, and register to receive regular email updates on the project.

The next stage of the project will see a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment carried out before applications for consents and licenses are submitted.

Cllr John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Coastal Management said “This is a significant project for the communities in Bacton and Walcott and our focus will be on keeping people informed and engaged as we seek the relevant permissions and approvals.”

The proposal relies on funding from a number of sources including the Bacton Terminal Operators and National Flood and Coastal Erosion Funding.

NNDC has committed £500,000 to the construction of the scheme; the Regional Flood and Coast Defence Committee (Eastern) through the local levy has committed £500,000; the National Natural Flood Management Fund has committed £120,000.

Cley Bird Club will join together with the North Norfolk NWT Group and the North East Norfolk Bird Club for an evening of celebration for the life of Richard Richardson in Cley Village Hall which will feature an illustrated talk by Moss Taylor entitled ‘Celebrating the Life of Richard Richardson’. During the evening there will be the opportunity to view displays which will include about 25 of RAR’s original paintings and some of his many line drawings, folders of the RAR archive material that was used in the preparation of Moss’s biography of RAR, Guardian Spirit of the East Bank. In addition, RAR’s personal photograph album of Cley Bird Observatory, his first ringing log and the ringing logs of Cley Bird Observatory as well as tapes of RAR talking about Cley and Fair Isle will be played.

Call for Councils to be given greater powers to act North Norfolk District Council has written to the Government calling for greater powers to act when Travellers and other groups set up unauthorised encampments, if those encampments are in local authority areas which provide Temporary Stopping Places (TSPs).

Currently, the Council is able to issue a Direction to Leave land but, if this is not complied with, the Council needs to go to court to obtain a Magistrates Order to allow it to take enforcement action and move vehicles off the unauthorised sites.

Two Temporary Stopping Places with proper facilities are available for Travellers in the district, at Cromer and Fakenham, and North Norfolk District Council wants the power to be able to instruct Travellers to move to those sites without delay when they set up unauthorised encampments. Both those sites are used regularly.

If Travellers are unwilling to move to a Temporary Stopping Place when instructed to do so, then the Council wants the power to be able to move them off the unauthorised sites and away from the area immediately, rather than having to wait for a Magistrates Order, which can cause unacceptable

delays, particularly at weekends.

Following a turbulent weekend for Cromer and Sheringham, together with other incidents across several other areas in the district, North Norfolk District Council has written to the Communities Secretary of State, Sajid Javid.

This letter calls for those Councils which have spent public funds in providing Temporary Stopping Places (TSPs) to be given the power to be able to move people on immediately when they arrive and pitch up on unauthorised sites, rather than have to apply for a Magistrates Order.

Council Leader Cllr Tom FitzPatrick said “We believe we should have the power to be able to act straight away and not have to wait – especially over a weekend.

“North Norfolk is a stunning holiday destination and our resorts and other communities deserve respect. We welcome all individuals and groups who respect our towns and countryside, our residents and other visitors, but where people come and set up unauthorised encampments, without thought for others, this does not show any respect and we want the power to move them on immediately and if necessary out of our district. Those who don’t respect our

resorts and visitor areas, whether Travellers or anyone else, are not welcome.

“Cromer is a wonderful seaside holiday resort, businesses in the area rely on the summer visitors yet for one of the busiest weekends of the year some pubs and other businesses were shut and people felt intimidated and harassed. A huge amount of work had gone into providing a great few days for visitors and this was spoiled by a few. That can never be acceptable.

“I welcome the announcement by the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner that there will be a public meeting where residents will have the opportunity to ask policing-specific questions. We have offered to make our Council Chamber available for the meeting.”

North Norfolk District Council served a Notice to move on the 23 illegally parked camper vans and caravans early on Saturday afternoon (19 August 2017).

The Notice required the travellers to move by 3pm that day.

The Notice was not complied with and, had the travellers not left on the Sunday, the Council would then have sought a Magistrates Order on the Monday to move them out of Cromer.

Walker raising money for RNLI reaches Cromer www.erpinghamyouth.co.uk

Alex Ellis-Roswell set off in 2014 to walk the coast of the UK to raise money for the RNLI. He left Margate to walk 9500 miles, hoping that sponsorship of £10 per mile would mean he could donate £95000 to the RNLI.

Alex has always had a love of the water and spent a lot of his spare time either in the sea or inland. So he thought fundraising for the RNLI would be an excellent charity to support.

With only 500 miles left to walk of his epic target, Alex is looking forward to finishing his task and returning home. In the past week he has raised over £1000 in Norfolk, which will be added to the £60000 he has had donated so far.

With an estimated finish date of November, Alex will be walking onto Happisburgh, then Gorleston and the other stations along the Suffolk and Essex Coast.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

year, culminating in hosting Loughborough Tourists needing seven rinks, requiring Bob Allard to upgrade our normal six rinks. We needed 28 players and we had 32 eagerly wishing to play. So, 56 bowlers on the green, a great achievement.

A summary of our bowls season:

NBA Hansells League Neil Patrickson (Captain) reports that at the start of the season his team sustained several very narrow defeats. More success came later in the season and they were able to improve their place in this league, finishing eighth.

In the Bales Cup having defeated Reepham Nomads, they then succumbed to Swafham Town.

In the ‘Fermoy’ and ‘Jermy’ cups, they met stiff opposition and did not progress.
