on 19 - 20 December.

The hares were part of the very popular 2018 Break GoGo trail that took place over the summer. The hares named, A Hare through the Seasons and Lepus are visiting the reception until they go back to Holt Country Park and North Walsham for key Christmas events.

Lepus left earlier to attend the Christmas Lights Switch On in his home town of North Walsham on the 24 November.

New Leader at North Norfolk District Council

• Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader and portfolio holder Cllr Sarah Bütikofer elected as North Norfolk District Council Leader for Corporate Services, Asset North Norfolk District Council has a new Leader Commercialisation, Customer Services and Community Engagement following a meeting of the Full Council.

New Cabinet at NNDC A three-party Cabinet has been named by the new Leader of North Norfolk District Council.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, who was elected as Leader of North Norfolk District Council on Wednesday, said she was “honoured and excited to be the new Leader of North Norfolk District Council. In keeping with my commitment to work with unity, I am delighted to unveil my new cross-party Cabinet and look forward to us all working together. Every person on this Cabinet will be able to give their own views when we are discussing the topics of importance to the people of North Norfolk.

I would not describe this as a coalition, but as a cross-party Cabinet working for the good of North Norfolk and its communities. There will be no political whipping by me of those on the Cabinet.”

The Cabinet is made up of four Liberal Democrats, two Conservatives and one Independent, and is as follows:

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

‘Cromer and Sheringham from the Past’ - this was the title of an illustrated, historical talk given to us by Mr Brian Hedge, on Tuesday 6 November.

Brian is deeply interested in local history and for the purpose of this presentation he combined the first halves of two separate talks.

Beginning with Cromer, he described journalist Clement Scott’s arrival at Cromer, at the behest of the Daily Telegraph. It was Scott who nicknamed this area “Poppyland”. Brian mentioned how the new railways in the 19th century brought holidaymakers to North Norfolk and of course this led to the development of both towns. Then we saw old pictures of Happy Valley towards the golf links; the lighthouse; the parish church; and of the windmill which used to be in what is now called Mill Road.

In the second half, Brian showed old photos of Upper Sheringham – its streets, the church, and Sheringham Hall, which was built in the lee of a wooded hillside. He told us about The Dales - a former rectory which was converted into a private hotel and which at one time was used as a military hospital. We were also shown views of Sheringham from Beeston Hill (in winter!) and also of Beeston Priory. Brian also spoke about Sheringham Park, Pretty Corner, and much else.

We hope that we will hear more from Brian another time. He was thanked by our lunch secretary, Dave Vickery; sadly, we had heard only the day before that our Chairman, Michael Webb, had unexpectedly passed away. Our condolences go out to Mrs Webb, who wished us to go ahead with the meeting, as Michael would have wanted.

The Sights and Sounds of the Sixties Returns to Cromer Pier Cromer Pier is delighted to announce a planned return to the Sixties in 2019

After the success of the sixties festival in 2017 and following significant customer demand the pier, working with Nigel Pearce as co-producer will re-instate the day and plan to both develop it into an annual event and a weekend festival over time for it to become a firm fixture in Cromerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diverse entertainment calendar.

The 2019 Festival will take place on Saturday 30 March 2019 so be sure to mark the date in your diary.

Local Author Releases New Railways Book 'The Liveries of the Pre-Grouping Railways' is a fourvolume series published by Lightmoor Press depicting the colours worn by the locomotives, carriages and wagons of the standard gauge steam railways of Great Britain in existence before the First World War.

Volume Two presents the liveries of the railways in the East of England and Scotland which became part of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923.

This includes celebrated local Norfolk lines the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway and the Great Eastern Railway.

Originally published as a series of illustrated articles in British Railway Modelling magazine between 1994 and 2006, this edition brings them together for the first time and features revised text, new paintings and new scrap views, combined with photographs, contemporary postcards, colour patches and a glossary of paints and painting methods.

Nigel Digby is a well-known railway author and lecturer living in Cromer, and this is his seventh published book.

Other titles deal with the stations and structures of the M&GN, modelling lineside buildings and railway signalling.

Help East Anglian Air Ambulance keep families together this Christmas

East Anglian Air Ambulance launched their ‘Together This Christmas’ campaign last month.

After saving the life of three-year-old Annabel earlier in the year, the charity has asked people to consider giving a little extra over the festive period to bring more patients like Annabel home to their families for Christmas.

On 9 February 2018 EAAA’s Anglia Two crew was tasked at 09.49 to a three-year-old girl named Annabel, who had sadly suffered a cardiac arrest at her pre-school. Pilots Olly Gates and Gav Blake flew the team of Dr Victor Inyang, Dr Jon Barratt and Critical Care Paramedic Chris Neil directly to her side, arriving just 17 minutes after receiving the call. Despite a successful resuscitation by the fantastic pre-school team, Annabel was deeply unconscious and her airway was compromised.

The team gave her a general anaesthetic in order to protect her airway and breathing. It is incredibly rare to anaesthetise a young child outside of a hospital so the team carefully modified drug dosages based on her age and weight. Specialist paediatric airway equipment was prepared and checked. It took the team just sixteen minutes to complete the process. After gaining control of Annabel’s airway the crew made the decision to fly her to Addenbrooke’s. En route to hospital

the team worked hard to stabilise her, but on the latter half of the journey Annabel deteriorated further and required intervention with specialist drugs. They were met at the hospital by the specialist paediatric resuscitation team.

At this point she sadly went into cardiac arrest for a further two hours. Despite all the odds and after receiving further expert care at the hospital Annabel made an incredible recovery. The chain of survival was perfectly formed that day. It was undoubtedly the quick response, professional skills and outstanding patient care by everyone involved in a devastating situation that resulted in a lovely three-year-old girl being saved.

Given Annabel’s age and presentation, this mission was one of the most significant for the EAAA and the team, who said they were delighted to be able to meet Annabel and her family at the charity’s base and show her the helicopter she was flown in.

Chris Neil, Critical Care Paramedic at EAAA, said “On that day I was able to utilise all of my skills I have learnt in my 25 years working within pre-hospital emergency medicine. The

job was truly career defining. It stretched my abilities, resilience and emotions and had the most amazing outcome. Meeting Annabel a few months later was a special moment and one I will always treasure.”

Rebecca and William, Annabel’s parents, said “As a parent you never want to hear that your child is in need of emergency medical attention.

Our world was shattered when we learnt that our three-year-old was being air lifted to Addenbrooke’s. Thankfully the EAAA played a vital part in our daughter’s chain of survival.

The expertise, compassion and care they have provided during and after that unforgettable day in February, has enabled us to put into perspective how incredible and invaluable their service is. We are forever grateful.”

Little Annabel will be spending this Christmas together with her family, and this is all thanks to you, the fantastic communities who support the charity and keep them flying. What the Dickens?!

At this time of year, attention often turns to Charles Dickens, and anyone who has read a Dickens’ novel will be aware of how much he loved to poke fun at lawyers and legal proceedings. Many aspects of modern legal practice would be completely alien to Dickens – employment law, intellectual property law, health and safety legislation to name a few, but there are some areas of the law where procedures have, in some respects at least, changed much less over the last 180 years ...

Swear Words In The Pickwick Papers, a misunderstanding leads to the amiable but bumbling Mr Pickwick being sued. Dickens describes a scene at court, where a clerk is administering oaths: ‘…the oath being invariably administered, without any effort at punctuation, and usually in the following terms: “Take the book in your right hand this is your name and hand-writing you swear that the contents of this your affidavit are true so help you God a shilling you must get change I haven’t got it.”’

Although we now try to be a little more client-friendly in our approach, the wording described above will be familiar to anyone who has had to swear an oath for legal purposes.

Clients often comment to us that the procedure seems rather archaic and strange. Certainly, it raises a few questions:

What is the purpose of an oath?

to be sworn before a solicitor or legal executive (Commissioner of Oaths). The document has to be sworn whilst holding a bible or other holy book. It is usually for documents used in Court, including probate oaths - the process of applying for a Grant of Probate, a legal document issued by the Court that proves an executor’s right to administer an estate of a deceased person.

The idea behind confirming a document by means of an oath is that the person who swears to it is making a solemn promise that the contents are true, to the best of their knowledge and belief. It is the equivalent on paper of a witness in Court swearing to tell ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’. Lying on oath is taken more seriously by a court than an untrue statement made in other circumstances.

What happens if you don’t want to swear on the Bible?

Many people, whether or not they have any religious belief are prepared to swear on the Bible, accepting it as part of the procedure.

However, some people object to the practice on religious grounds or for other reasons.

In these circumstances, an ‘affirmation’ is perfectly acceptable, and the lawyer who is administering the oath will provide some slightly amended wording.

What is the swearing procedure?

An oath must be sworn in front of an

independent lawyer/solicitor – not someone from the firm who has prepared the relevant document. It is also possible to swear an oath before an appointed court official. You will need to repeat or read out the wording given to you by the lawyer which is not dissimilar to the wording described above by Dickens. The fee is currently £5, with an extra £2 for each ‘exhibit’ (document attached) to the statement.

It’s a little more than a shilling, but still a token fee for this old-fashioned procedure and perhaps not too much for a chance to swear at a lawyer!

Soul All-Dayer Delivers £500 to Young Minds

Cromer Soul Club celebrated its first anniversary on 3 November by hosting an all-day dance event at Cromer Community Centre, where it raised £500 for mental health charity, Young Minds.

Resident DJs Trevor Half-Nelson and Piers ‘Hitman’ Hawkins were joined by guests from other local clubs to spin nine hours of Northern and Motown vinyl for an appreciative crowd of soul fans from across the region.

“Our first event, a little over a year ago, attracted about 35 people, but we now normally welcome around 100 to our regular Keep the Faith Saturday club nights,” said Trevor Half-Nelson.

The Club has raised about £3000 over the past 12 months for a variety of charities. “Young Minds seemed an appropriate choice for the November all-dayer because it was the charity we donated to from our very first club night,” explained Hitman Hawkins.

Cromer Soul Club’s next dance night takes place at Cromer Community Centre on 15 December 7.30pm -midnight. Proceeds will go to Cromer Lifeboat Station.

Come and Have Fun with Blakeney Rowing Club

This is an excellent time of year to be on the water with your local rowing club.

The next race will be for The Carrow Cup on 8 December in Norwich.

Originating in 1803, this is believed to be the oldest event in the country for fixed seat rowing boats and is quite a spectacle. Competitors are timed over a course which runs from Pulls Ferry, through the Riverside area, past the Norwich City Stadium and ends at Thorpe Rail Bridge. Club members will be crewing both Bluejacket and Hoi Larntan so it certainly will be a race worth watching. The next report will contain an account of how the Blakeney skiffs performed.

Why not come along and try skiff rowing? Socialise on the water or compete. The choice is entirely yours. You may sample three rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary.

After our packed lunch, we will walk north of the A149 to Lady Anne's Drive to look at the wintering flocks of geese and other wildfowl grazing on the fields and then if we have enough light we may walk either west into the pine woods to the first hide or into Holkham Bay depending on what birds are about. If we have prior knowledge that there are either twite or shore larks in the Bay, we will go seawards on our walk.

Latest art exhibition opens at North Norfolk District Council HQ Photographs are inspired by the beauty of Norfolk’s coastline North Norfolk District Council is proud to be hosting an exhibition by Norfolk photographer Paul Macro, with his work on display at its offices in Cromer.

The Seasonal Coast exhibition highlights the natural beauty of Norfolk’s coastline throughout the year.

“The face of Norfolk is not a portrait that remains in the same pose from January to December but is an ever-changing canvas of mood and expression – it’s unpredictable and irresistible,” said Paul.

“Norfolk’s bright tapestry of dark winter skies and rough seas, fiery sunsets and blood-red poppy fields, pebbled beaches and wind-slapped greenery is there for us all to see, all year round.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Flossy has left us for her new home as have four more young cats plus four more kittens. We are also keeping our fingers crossed that Chewy will be leaving us shortly. Their pens will not be empty for long as we have lots of cats on the waiting list who need our help. Stephanie will have to decide which ones have the greatest need and who has been patiently waiting for some time to come into care. It is a balancing act and our first priority is always for the cats themselves.

So far this year we have had many cats and kittens joining us that have been strays. Some have been young mothers with their kittens, while others, like Grace, were left to fend for themselves when they become old and have health problems. We have also had young male cats that have strayed and forgotten the way home, primarily because they have not been neutered. Other cats have joined us because their owner has died or is unable to care for them any longer. We have taken cats and kittens in from homes where the owner has realised that they have too many cats to care for properly. We have also taken some in, after a call from one of the veterinary practices we use, because they have a cat that needs a new home once it recovers from either an operation or illness. Whatever the reason, we help as soon as we can, but cannot help until a pen becomes free.

Sales at High Hedges have now finished for the year and we would like to thank Sharon for continuing to sell goods from her home. This year she has raised ÂŁ482 for the cats in care. A wonderful result for all her hard work, setting up the stall when the weather is fine and making sure the goods are clean and working. Andrea, with help from Glidy, has also had an exceptional year and at the last count had raised ÂŁ950.45 from the sale of their beautiful cards at Westover Vets, Glaven Vets and Mulberry Tearooms. They are hoping to reach four figures by the end of the year.

We will have more information on fund raising next time.

Our Neutering Line has also been very busy and again, at the time of writing, we have issued 224 vouchers (71 of these in the last two months) for cats to be neutered. We have also helped with neutering several feral cats too. So many cats and kittens need our help because a cat has not been neutered so we are delighted and hope people will

Cromer Flower Club

At our last meeting we enjoyed an amusing and lively demonstrations by Susan Horn on Floral Mayhem. She insisted she created mayhem wherever she went, but she still produced some beautiful designs!

The first was in a metal trug and the greenery was ivy, blue spruce, pittosporum, variegated box and holly. The flowers were sunflowers, orange gerberas and orange Mario roses. It brightened the hall on a dull evening.

Her second design gave us at taste of Christmas in Barbados. It was in a tall gold vase, draped with a sparkly cloth, she used exotic foliage including staghorn fern which produced an ooh! from her audience. The flowers were ginger lilies, heliconia, a sponge, two tiny pineapples with four red anthuriums to finish.

The next design was in a bamboo frame. She used contorted hazel, various greenery including a large leaved evergreen pittosporum and camellia japonica with unopened flower heads. It was a one flower arrangement with a lovely cymbidiums orchid.

It was followed by a white design in a metal stand using palms eucalyptus, variegate euonymus. Hydrangea heads, trailing ivy, with silvered skimmia. (Mrs Hinch would love it!) White lilies, white lisianthus, white rose and silver pine cones completed the arrangement.

A large boat shape made out of twigs appeared with two red candles in the centre. The foliage was as already used supplemented with spruce, variegated holly and pine. She used stunning amaryllis, Finn a pink and cream gerbera, with Garnet Glow lilies. Red skimmia and a dark pink rose.

Lastly we had a moon shaped arrangement in metal circles on a stand. Pine, eucalyptus, variegated box and trailing ivy provided the background and it was filled with orange gerberas, red carnations and a lovely red rose called Naomi.

We had our annual competition for the Christmas wrapping of a box of chocolates. It was won by Pat Skinner who fashioned a little sleigh complete with parcels. The 38 boxes were donated to Halsey House.

The flower competition this month was ‘A Floral Surprize’. Best in show was created by Jenny Pawson, a goblet containing pink roses, white chrysanthemums, phormium leaves and a bit of glittery stuff.

We next meet at 2pm on Monday 10 December in the Community Hall when Chrystal Dyball will give us some Chrystal Sparkle.

Cromer and District Garden Society

Members were sorry to hear that our President, Bill LeGrice, was unwell and could not attend the AGM which preceded our November meeting.

The Society has had another successful year with well attended monthly meetings, two colourful shows and success in the annual inter-society quiz with our friends from Sheringham and Hoveton/ Wroxham.

All this, of course, against the background of some very trying weather conditions. It is easy to forget just how challenging the cold winds and snow of late February and early March were for gardeners and when this was followed by one of the hottest and driest summers in recent times it is a wonder that gardens had anything to show at all! The Society’s finances are very healthy and it was fitting that the committee could propose that the annual membership stay at £10. Membership includes free entry to the monthly meetings, the chance to go on outings in the summer and discounts at local garden centres and nurseries. Anyone wishing to join for the first time will be warmly welcomed. Our meetings take place on the second Wednesday of the month in the Community Hall in Cromer at 7.30pm.

Following the AGM members Greg Bond gave a talk on the work of Butterfly Conservation. This organisation organises walks and events to promote its work across the county. It is involved in conservation work in the Brecks and Broads, in particular at Catfield near North Walsham and Cranwich Camp near Mundford. Work at these sites involves creating habitats that help to protect moths and butterflies that would otherwise be in danger.

Members were encouraged to make their gardens as butterfly and moth friendly as possible. By promoting research, monitoring threatened species and record keeping Butterfly Conservation has an important role to play in protecting these beautiful creatures.

The December meeting is a members’ social evening and talks begin on 9 January when Dr Tony Leech, an expert on fungi, will talk on ‘Witches and Devils’.

Further step forward for tennis in North Norfolk North Norfolk District Council approves funding for Community Sports Hub plan

A plan to build a state-of-the-art £3.4m indoor tennis centre for North Norfolk and to improve four other tennis facilities spread across the district has cleared a key hurdle.

Funding to build the Community Sports Hub, which would be built in Cromer in a partnership with the Lawn Tennis association (LTA), Cromer Academy and Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Association, was approved at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s Full Council.

The sports hub, which was approved by the Council last year and given planning approval in September, will include three indoor tennis courts, a 25-station gym, a social area and viewing gallery, and a space for fitness classes, social activities and meetings.

The four satellite tennis facilities are in North

Walsham, Fakenham with two in Wells. The plans aim to greatly increase active leisure participation, as part of the Council’s wider health and wellbeing offer, across the district.

It would allow for year round indoor tennis in the District, demand for which was identified in the council’s 2015 Indoor Sports Facility Strategy.

Indoor tennis courts historically existed in Cromer from early in the 20th century and this new facility will build on that tradition, but will be open to the public, in order to benefit all players in the area.

Following tender evaluation for the sports hub construction, Full Council agreed to fund the construction phase of the project, including an additional £118,000 for improved car parking and access through Cabbell Park and additional

demolition and drainage works. Extra funding of £228,000 was approved for the satellite facilities. This follows on from enabling works for the project being completed on the Cromer Academy site during the summer school holidays.

The formal award of the construction contract will be made as soon as the LTA funding of £505,000 is confirmed, in early December.

Property related matters with Cromer Tennis Club are still being agreed and will be the final requirement for the project to go ahead, with the sports hub due to open in summer 2019.

Cromer RNLI holds Presentation Evening

June 2018 marked the end of an era at Cromer Royal National Lifeboat Institution Lifeboat Station as when our long-serving coxswain John Davies retired.

To mark his retirement along with several other stalwarts of Cromer RNLI, a presentation evening was held on 17 November at Northrepps Cottage Hotel.

During his 36 years of dedicated service John crewed and skippered several RNLI lifeboats â&#x20AC;&#x201C; most recently the state-of-the-art Tamar class Lester.

Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skill, courage and knowledge of the local waters were well known as demonstrated by the many rescues in which he has been involved over the years. John was presented with an oil painting and vellum which described his long service to Cromer RNLI. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family proudly watched the presentations, not only from Cromer RNLI but also from Sheringham RNLI. At the presentation ceremony was Lee Firman â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Area Lifesaving Manager for the RNLI - who made a presentation on behalf of the RNLI to John.

The evening also recognised other crew members who have retired after years of service. These included Peter Stokes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who was a relief mechanic as well as a crew member, Martin Steward â&#x20AC;&#x201C; senior helmsman and Jason King â&#x20AC;&#x201C; crew member.

More accolades for the quality of North Norfolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coastal waters

Further boost for the districtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s six award-winning Blue Flag beaches The fantastic quality of the bathing water around the North Norfolk coast has once again been officially recognised.

Earlier this year, the district was awarded Blue Flags for six of its beaches, and no district in England has more. The government has now informed North Norfolk District Council that the water off all six of those beaches â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at Cromer, East Runton, Mundesley, Sea Palling, Sheringham and West Runton â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is deemed to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;excellentâ&#x20AC;?.

The classifications are based on data collected by the Environment Agency and will be officially in place for next year. It means the six beaches are well placed ahead of applications to renew their Blue Flag awards, with water quality one of the key measures under the Blue Flag scheme.

THE STRAND CLUB

On a breezy November day we were privileged to visit Templewood in Frogshall to view the ceiling in the saloon and many of the paintings and furnishings now owned

by Eddie Anderson and his family.

Eddie greeted us on the steps and told us of the origin of the frontage, with its lions and coat of arms, and we were then drawn into the hall and through into the saloon.

This is the most beautiful room, lit by a stunning chandelier which came from Paris.

EXHIBITION, THEATRE, FILM & CONCERT OPPORTUNITIES

Thorpe Market church has built up a reputation for hosting art and craft exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and live bands when not in use for services.

The venue has an accessible car park, three tier staging with comfortable chairs, boards to hang work on, a kitchen and most importantly it is easy to heat. We are currently investing in a new hanging system for the church. The newest facility this church received funding for was a large film projector and screen in order to run a film club for the community.

If you think you would like to volunteer to run this then do contact us.

We do not charge for the venue but there is a 20% commission on gross sales taken during your event. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of this historic church.

Key dates in the annual calendar are Snow Drop Sundays in February, when we open our doors to welcome up to 1400 visitors, who come to visit the churchyard for the Snow Drop experience, not to mention Thorpe Market’s famous spread of afternoon tea, coffee and cakes.

Other key dates are bank holiday weekends, Norfolk Open Studios and Half Term breaks. New Name New Venue for Winter 2019

During 2018 Arthritis Research and Arthritis Care joined forces to form a new charity Versus Arthritis.

The national charity Versus Arthritis is an excellent resource for those living with and suffering from Arthritis. Many people are unaware that Arthritis takes on many different forms and types, not all are easy to diagnose from tests or x rays and may need a clinical assessment to determine type and correct treatment.

Versus Arthritis runs a helpline, spearheads research into and actively campaigns at national level on behalf of people living with these life-changing and painful conditions, caring for people at all levels.

The local group in Sheringham welcomes people to share experiences and helpful ideas and has a new venue for winter 2019. Meetings will take place on the 3rd Monday of each month during January, February and March at Anchor Close, Community Room, Cromer Road, Sheringham, situated just opposite the surgery with dropping off facilities, disabled parking space and a bus stop nearby. The community room is on the ground floor just left, through the main doors. Please note there is no meeting in December.

Arthritic conditions affect work, everyday tasks and activities, well-being, family members and care givers. All Saints Upper Sheringham Bell Project

At the meeting of the Upper Sheringham Parochial Church Council on Monday 12 November, it was unanimously agreed that we are now in a position to place the order with the bellhangers, Nicholson Engineering Ltd of Bridport, Dorset for the work to restore the bells at All Saints Church.

The bellhanger, Andrew Nicholson, has now agreed dates for the work which will start with the dismantling of the current installation and the removal of the bells to his works in Dorset in July 2019. If all goes to plan, the work will be completed to enable the bells to be rung for Remembrance and Christmas next year, which will be amazing!

There will be a balustrade installed once the work is completed, but we didn’t want it to get in the way of the bells being taken in and out.

Each Heart holds the Secret

With the intriguing title of Each Heart holds the Secret, it tells the story of Ellen, and Walter her sweetheart, who live in North Norfolk in the late 1890s.

Walter and Ellen have been walking out together for quite a time and are enjoying the innocent sweetness of young love. So although there is scandal it is neither glorified nor defamed but features as a necessary part of the story. But news of the pregnancy unleashes a series of events that shakes both Walter and Ellen to their foundations and tests their love for each other. Walter is determined to stand by Ellen and the story tells of his efforts and the plight of Ellen. In those days, it was a far from easy task and Walter finds that he has taken on a challenge that demands more than he is able to achieve on his w ww. own. What is the secret that the heart holds because that is the key to the story?

Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity

Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results we do not need to over-tighten the face and neck. We can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.

Gordon Nichols presented with RNLI Medal

One of Cromer RNLI’s crew, Gordon Nichols was the recipient of a long service award during the presentation evening on 17 November.

Gordon is a valued and respected member of the crew who serves on both the RNLI D class inshore lifeboat – ‘George and Muriel’ and the RNLI Tamar class ‘Lester’. Gordon in the past has been mechanic for Cromer’s lifeboats and has also, in his nearly 29 years RNLI service, been a tractor driver for the lifeboat service.

He is one of the very few tractor drivers and possibly the first - to have received a letter of thanks – for his efforts. On December 5th 1998, he assisted in a launch off Cromer Beach, a north westerly wind gusting at 8 to 9, accompanied by snow and rough seas. The swell at the launching site was over 4 metres. The lifeboat was launched into hazardous and heavy seas.

The letter goes on to state ‘As tractor driver your skill and judgement was vital for the safe launch of the lifeboat and it is to your credit that the lifeboat was quickly and safely launched to go to the aid of the ‘Ocean Explorer’.

GODFREY OVERPOWERS THE CHAMP IN STRAIGHT GAMES

Just over 33 years ago Cromer squash player Jeff Morris tragically died on court and the Club decided to honour his memory by instigating a tournament for players aged 35 and over which was held for the first time in the autumn of 1985.

This year was the 33rd anniversary of that first tournament and in the final Phil Godfrey, who was the beaten finalist in last year’s tournament, overwhelmed the man who beat him in that final, John Baker, coming out on top in straight games and winning 9-6 9-3 9-1.

www.cromergaragedoors.co.uk Baker first won the title in 2004 and again for a further four times between 2013 and 2017, as well as being runner up in 2008 and, ten years on, he had to settle for the runners up spot once again as sixty nine year old Godfrey controlled the match from mid way through the first game.

The match started off as might have been expected with both players winning rallies and picking up points but with the score at 5-5 Godfrey started to pull ahead and he took the opening game 9-6. By now he was starting to control the match and dominate the rallies and when he took the second game 9-3 to open up a 2-0 lead the title looked to be his for the taking. This proved to be the case and Godfrey was in complete command of the third game, at one stage leading 8-1 before winning the game 9-2.

Baker, who has also won the Club championship four times and the club veterans’ title three times, was gracious in defeat saying “All credit to Phil. He played brilliantly throughout and once I lost the first game I had no answer to some of his play”

Technical Director Barry Starling, who was prevented by injury from entering this year’s tournament paid tribute to both players saying that the match was high on quality and provided a terrific advertisement for age related squash.

John Baker and Phil Godfrey – runner up and In the semi finals Baker had a 3-0 victory over the three time club veterans’ champion, Alan Harper winner of the Club’s Over 35 tournament while Godfrey had an easier passage as the 2012 champion and 2013 veterans’ champion Matt Copeman was forced to withdraw.
