New Era Begins at Cromer Town Football Club At the Cromer Town Football Club AGM on 13 July Jenna Bedwell was elected as the new Chairperson and a completely new committee was also appointed.

Jenna said “We are embarking on a new era at Cromer Town Football Club. Firstly we want to build a team capable of returning to the Anglia Combination Premier Division. We have a challenging time ahead building a sustainable football club. We do not have the vast resources of a professional football club and heavily rely on support from the local residents and businesses. There are also plans that we will be moving to a new home in Cromer in a few years’ time, as yet we do not know where.”

Cromer Town Football club is a valuable community asset, with a history going back over 133 years. The new committee now wants to build a bright future for the Club.

The Club wants to engage with the whole community so everyone feels proud of what is achieved on and off the pitch and wants to support the Club.

The Club has arranged a public meeting on Wednesday 9 August at 7.30pm at Cabbell Park, where the committee can explain plans for the future and James Mathie, Head of England & Wales and Club Development at Supporters Direct is coming to talk about Making Cromer Town FC a Community Owned Football Club.

I went to the second hand bookshop at Felbrigg Hall and bought an old book called 'The Wonderful Year'. Someone had inscribed in the front of the book 'with love to our dear son on REPAIRS, SERVICE & DIAGNOSTIC his return March 15th 1918'.

Three North Norfolk District Council outdoor spaces retain Green Flags

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods among best open spaces in the UK

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, near North Walsham, and Pretty Corner Woods, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2017/18.

This is the thirteenth year in a row that Holt Country Park has been able to fly the Green Flag, which denotes a welcoming, safe, clean and well-man aged site.

The award demands year-on-year improvement for the status to be retained.

Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year.

All three are run by North Norfolk District Council, with part of Pretty Corner Woods run by the Woodland Trust.

Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said “We are delighted that all three sites have retained their hard won status.

“A lot of hard work goes into making sure these beautiful places stay both welcoming and in excellent condition.

“Don’t forget that we also organise events at these locations, so you can choose to visit any one of the three as part of an organised event or in your own time.”

The award, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

In preparation for the launch of the 2017 Royal Air Forces Association, Wings Appeal the Sheringham & District Branch recently held their Annual Reception in Cley.

As guests of Mrs Pamela Keys MBE, 34 members and guests attended and to start the appeal £205 was raised during the evening.

The Wings Appeal is the RAF Association’s on-going fundraising campaign that helps support serving and former RAF personnel and their families, whenever they are in need. The RAF Association is a registered charity receiving no Government contributions - our work is completely funded by the generosity of our members and through vital donations from our supporters.

Local fishing boat in distress

A call came through just after 6am on 14 July to launch the inshore lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ to go and assist a local fishing boat with two crew on board.

Immediately the lifeboat crews assembled to launch the boat.

After being towed by the tractor crossing the shingle banks onto the beach, the RNLI lifeboat was soon in the water.

With the wind breezing from a westerly direction at a force of 2 -3 knots, the lifeboat was soon heading to approximately half a mile off the pier. It was agreed to tow the fishing boat back to the shore and by 6.55am both boats were back to Cromer.

The Inshore Lifeboat was then cleaned down, rehoused and made ready for its next call out.

Billy Gaff(one of the fishermen) said ' I am very impressed by the work performed by the ILB and Cromer RNLI Station as a whole. As a local I am aware of the help and support the RNLI give to those in need'.

Cromer-based violin teacher Norman, has been a prominent figure on the North Norfolk music scene since moving to the area in 1972, and says he has no plans to put down either his bow or baton yet!

After the interval, Simon Brown played Idyll in B minor from 3 Arabesques Op 7 by Nicolas Medtner – a chromatic composition with a Rachmaninov influence – being so chromatic in texture, I could not understand why the use of the sustaining pedal was over used causing a blurred result in much of the piece.

The evening progressed with the performance of four serious songs by Johannes Brahms entitled One thing befalleth the beasts, So I returned, Oh death how bitter and Though I speak with tongues. All with words from

The fifth song by Dring – the Song of a Night Club Proprietress – brought rapturous applause, having appreciated Anderson's take on, in her words, a rather tight lady!

A well deserved encore brought the concert to an end – and in the words of Arthur Windridge thanking the artists “a wonderful concert on a perfect summer's evening”.

Erpingham with Calthorpe WI Village Map Project

In 1987 members of Erpingham with Calthorpe WI worked together with Norfolk County Council to produce a map of walks around our village. Recently a copy of this map came to light. It is a fascinating document, well researched, that includes tantalising bits of historical information about our village, for instance that William Joyce, (Lord Haw Haw) stayed in the local pub before the Second World War. Fascinating!

Our regular WI walking group used it as the basis of one of our regular Tuesday walks. It was one of the best attended walks we have conducted, the weather was very kind and we were able to see that many of the highlights of the walk were still in place. We also spotted the changes wrought over the last 30 years and decided to update the map.

This was not going to be as straight forward as we had imagined. Because times have changed over the 30 years since its conception we have decided to focus the walks in the new map on our village hall, where there is now ample parking. To encourage non car users, we decided to extend the map to take in the main bus stop on the A140. The scope of the map will be extended to include the whole of the delightful Thwaite Common - a protected area for wildlife. We will add more detail in that area and the layout of the paths, some of which had altered over the years will be updated.

We were fascinated by the brief detail given about some of the notable places seen on the walks, and began fact checking and updating the information. Soon we had almost enough material to write a book. This has resulted in the formation of the History Group, a whole new group whose members, including some non-WI members will do research in depth on the stuff that most interests them and will report on its findings in due course. Documents, photos and artefacts are emerging, as well as stories from older residents.

The imagination of the crafters and needlewomen amongst us was fired up by the walk and subsequent discussion about the map design. We had been looking for a new and ambitious creative work for some time and the possibilities of a large co-operative multimedia version of the redesigned map of the walk will be our next long term project.

A date has been fixed to unveil the new map, nothing like a bit of time pressure to focus the mind : 2 September 2017.

Our WI plan to take over the village hall for the day, open a WI cafe with cake, snacks and a place to enjoy a cup of tea with fellow walkers. We are also going to display some of our many “historic” finds and photos, with information about notable sites of historic interest. The walkers could take in the historic local church, St Mary’s, (Open 10am -4pm) where amid medieval splendour, the WI sponsored “Erpingham Embroidery” is permanently on display. Members of The Friends of Thwaite Common will be on hand to talk about the wildlife you might hope to see, and the conservation measures that are taking place and are offering guided walks on the Common at 11am, 1pm and 3pm

We are hoping that WI Members from around Norfolk will join us to celebrate walking in our lovely county, and we would like to inspire other WIs to research and create their own local walking map. Could this be the start of a Federation-wide idea? After all, our walking group is always looking for new areas to explore.

From September to July we run monthly bird walks around Felbrigg Park on the third Wednesday of the month and monthly weekend walks to a range of local birding hotspots. We offer monthly evening talks with refreshments on the last Thursday of the month from September to November and January to April, and extended social events in May and December, all at Aylmerton Village Hall. Members and non-members of any level of birding experience are welcome at all our events and so are children if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

The summer has been a busy time for the society.

At our July meeting Julia Shrigley gave us some ideas on garden design. There are a number of styles that can be adopted when considering the design of a garden. The most common style is very formal with straight lines or circles. The gardens at Blickling Hall and Houghton Hall are good examples of this style.

Informal gardens are often high maintenance and a mixture of trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. Piet Oudolf’s garden at Pensthorpe is a fine example of this style. The matrix design includes prairie planting with big swathes of closely planted plants.

Gardens can be colour themed but tend to be limited in their season.

The white garden at Sissinghurst will be well known to many readers.

Planting for wildlife is very popular these days. These gardens look very naturalistic and will attract insects, bees, birds and small mammals such as hedgehogs.

Members have been on two visits so far this summer. In June we visited “Dunbheagan” near Westfield just outside Dereham. This garden consists of extensive borders and island

beds and although we visited on an overcast day the range of plants and the vibrant colours were clear to see. On the way home back to Cromer we stopped at The Urban Jungle in Costessey. This is a marvellous nursery specialising in unusual plants and is well worth a visit. The time we were able to spend there was limited and many of us left vowing to return at the earliest opportunity. In July we visited Dale Farm, also near Dereham. This two acre garden contains over 900 plant species, including 90 varieties of hydrangea.

A huge pond set off the gardens superbly. As is our custom we stopped off at Hoecroft Plants and Nursery at Wood Norton on the way home. Unfortunately we arrived at the same time as a tremendous cloudburst but this did not stop us buying some plants to take back home. As the nursery will be closing for good in the autumn many of us made a note to return when the weather will allow a more leisurely viewing of the show gardens at Hoecroft. Visit the nursery if you are able to do so before they close. You will not be disappointed.

We have a break now until meetings begin again in September.

Summer Tips from Animal Magic

Well it looks like summer is finally here, but please remember that dogs can suffer from the same problems that we do from over exposure to the sun. This includes dehydration, sunburn and heatstroke, which can be fatal to our four legged friends.

Here are our top tips for a safe summer with your dog : • Don’t leave your dog in the car – even in the shade with windows open the temperature can soar turning your car into an oven. Remember - dogs die in hot cars.

If you can’t take them with you then leave them at home.

• Try to walk your dog in the cooler morning or evening and if you really must walk at lunchtime choose a sheltered lane or wood.

Never allow your dog to exercise or play excessively in hot weather.

• Your dog will enjoy a shady spot to lie in but during the hottest part of the day they might be more comfortable indoors.

• If your dog goes off their food try to feed them later in the evening when it is cooler and you will usually find their appetites return.

• Make sure your dog always has a supply of clean drinking water. Always carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.

• Most dogs enjoy a paddle, swim or game with the hosepipe but please be aware water intoxication is a real danger, always supervise your dog to ensure they don’t ingest too much water whilst playing.

• If at all concerned about your dog’s health, always consult your vet as soon as possible.

But most of all enjoy a fun and safe summer with your dog!

If you want to treat your dog to some homemade ice cream, it’s really easy to make:

• Mash 1 tub of strawberries with a potato

masher

• Mix in 3 cups of fat free, unsweetened plain yoghurt

• Pour into moulds, ice cube trays or a muffin tray and freeze overnight

Save our Sanctuary – North Norfolk Cats Lifeline Trust – Open Day North Norfolk Cats Lifeline Trust (NNCLT) has launched a ‘Save Our Sanctuary’ campaign, after its future, following the sad passing of its founder Mrs Gay Rees, has become uncertain, as it does not own the land it sits upon.

The new committee of trustees, members, and supporters are all desperate to continue the important work, ensuring that the needy cats of North Norfolk will always have a safe place to go to, either for recuperating and rehoming, or for life where necessary.

Therefore, a huge fundraising campaign is underway to give the charity as much of a case to purchase the land as possible, securing the future of NNCLT.

The highlight of this campaign will be their annual Open Day, as always on the first Saturday in September (2 September this year) between 10am and 4pm at South Hollow, Beeston Regis, NR26 8TS.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

By the time you read this, a new cat will have taken up residence in our home. We thought long and hard before making the decision as we felt, due to our ages, it would not be appropriate to offer a home to a kitten and we also felt that as Maxwell, our neighbourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cat, is a frequent visitor, we had to make sure he would be happy to share his space with another feline. Mylee ticks all the boxes as she is a very gentle cat and came into care with her kittens from a multi cat household. As she is female she will not pose a threat to Maxwell when he visits and we hope they will soon be good friends. She was a super little mum and we were delighted that all her kittens found lovely new homes.

However, before she could take up residence, we realised that she had a problem in her mouth as she started to dribble quite heavily and was obviously very sore. Cats that live in multi cat households have often been in contact with the calicivirus which can cause gingivitis and, because it can reoccur, the recommended treatment is to remove the teeth to prevent further episodes. Mylee had an operation to remove the teeth in the infected area and will be going back for her pre op check before coming home. Hopefully, once her gums become less inflamed and sore she will feel a much happier little cat and, indeed, she is already tucking into her food, including the biscuits. Although it seems a drastic action to have to take, a nice healthy mouth will give her a better quality of life. Mylee will never be clear of the virus, but the vaccines she has had will help protect her in the future.

Mowgli, one of our younger residents, has also been in the wars with serious breathing problems and needed injections to help with this.

X-rays indicate his lungs are now much better, but that he still has an infected larynx. He has needed more treatment to help with his recovery and is due to go back for a check soon to see what progress has been made. As he joined us from an industrial site and his coat was full of

cement dust, this may be the root cause of the problem. His appetite has improved and he is full of mischief, so we are feeling quite optimistic that he will make a good recovery.

We welcomed two visitors to our July meeting and hope they enjoyed their afternoon. A new member, Margaret Wilson, was also welcomed. We are delighted she has chosen to join us.

The Roman project at Woodgate Nursery near Aylsham was then discussed. Mr Peter Purdy, owner of the land, has been turning up Roman coins for years and a couple of years ago decided to create an official dig with the help of local archaeologists and the knowledge and approval of Norwich Castle Museum. During week beginning 7 August the dig will be open to visitors and several of us have decided to go along and watch proceedings.

We then welcomed Linda Matthews of Age UK Norfolk. Her talk was fascinating. Apparently Age UK Norfolk began life in 1947 (and is therefore 70 this year) as the Norfolk Older People's Welfare Association specifically to help and support those bereaved and in difficulties after the end of the war. It later became Age Concern and later still Age UK. They can offer a great deal of help and advice from trained volunteers, including applying for benefits and form-filling (though not necessarily difficult, official forms need to be completed in exactly the right way and Age UK can do this).

They can help us deal with pushy salespeople and provide both occasional day care and respite care in one of their two local places.

They can offer lists of local clubs to combat loneliness and trusted tradespeople to help around the home. Their policy is to listen to what is required and then provide it. We found it all very informative and helpful. Linda was inundated with questions afterwards and after our usual tea and biscuits we left with our heads buzzing with useful facts and possibilities for assistance either now or later in life.

There will be no meeting in August and the next one therefore will be our September handicrafts session which will begin at 2pm as usual. The October meeting will be a cream tea (cost ÂŁ3) and a musical quiz presented by Tony and Miriam.

If you would like to join us to see what you think of us, you will be most welcome. We charge just ÂŁ2 at the door for visitors which covers tea and biscuits. Raffle prizes are available separately throughout the afternoon.

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

Unsung heroes are a feature of national life and no-where more so than here in North Norfolk.

One who would have become a world-wide household name however was the central character in a stimulating talk given by Phil Hawkes to Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club at its July meeting. His name was Tom Bourdillon and he almost became the first person to climb Mt Everest.

Phil told us that Tom, educated at Gresham’s School, Holt and Balliol College, Oxford where he read Physics, was a passionate mountaineer and was chosen as part of the team to attempt to reach the highest peak on the planet in 1953. Along with Charles Evans, a brain surgeon, he was selected to lead the climb using closed-circuit oxygen apparatus

instead of the traditional open-circuit. Together they made rapid progress and were a mere 300ft from the summit when Evans had great difficulty with his breathing, needing six breaths for every step forward. Bourdillon, realising Evans’ plight, though tempted to push on, decided that if they were to survive they would have to turn back. They returned slowly to the South Col exhausted by their efforts but at least alive.

Three days later Sir John Hunt the expedition leader ordered two other members of the team to make another attempt, and on 26 May Edmund Hillary and sherpa Tensing Norgay reached the summit and became household names.

In spite of this setback Tom Bourdillon, while working as a physicist in rocket research,

continued his attempts to push back the boundaries of mountaineering but sadly, whilst climbing with a friend, Richard Viney, in the Bernese Oberland, fell to his death aged 31, leaving behind a daughter and a ten week old son.

Phil Hawkes related this ‘so near’ story with well researched and illustrated information and compassion for an unsung hero. He was thanked by the Chairman, Jack Broughton.

Cromer’s Got Stars

Cromer Community Centre are looking for people to take part in its ‘Cromer’s Got Stars’ event on Saturday 19 August.

It is an opportunity for local singers, groups, dancers and comedians to show off their talents. The Community Centre has just got a new sound and light system and this will be an opportunity to make full use of the equipment.

SHERINGHAM & CROMER LIONS CLUB

Annual General Meeting On 11 July the Club held its Annual General Meeting at the Morley Club. A new President was elected, Rodney Crowfoot, who lives in Sheringham and I was elected as Vice President.

Our Past President, Arthur Bailey, has now become Zone Chairman of our District and we all wish him well. He will remain a member of our Club but will have other duties to fulfil.

This past year to the end of June has been one of our best years since the Club began, with all our events raising more money than ever for good causes. We have also had a lot of fun doing so and we would like to welcome anyone interested in joining us to find out what we do.

Popular North Norfolk head teacher retires

‘Mother Goose’ to focus on her English country garden…

The head teacher of one of Norfolk’s most successful primary schools is to retire after 12 years hard graft. Tina Casburn has spent her working life in schools in Norwich and Norfolk and has been a very popular head at Aldborough Primary School, near Aylsham.

Under her stewardship the school has grown and has been extensively rebuilt. Only this year the Rt Hon Nick Gibb MP, minister of state for school standards, wrote to Mrs Casburn to praise Aldborough’s standards of reading, which put it in the top 1% of schools nationally.

A special event was held on 20 July to commemorate her retirement.

Deputy Head Jill Morgan reminded Tina that when she arrived at the school she described herself as Mother Goose looking after her goslings.

She then unveiled the special present that friends, staff, parents, children and governors had bought her – a metal sculpture of a Mother Goose, created by local blacksmith Baron Tremain.

Clearly moved by the tributes paid to her – even those that mentioned the tidiness of her office and her knack of losing her glasses – Mrs Casburn described the day as “absolutely wonderful,” adding that she had been very, very lucky to have worked at Aldborough.

The children all did special songs and vignettes for her, while the staff staged a one-off play that saw Mrs Casburn (enthusiastically played by Class 4 teacher Gavin Barnard) and her friend, Educational Principles, fight off the villains ranged against them, in the form of Ofsted, BT Openreach and Mr Gove.

“There have been a couple of downs as well as many, many ups over the 12 years,” said Mrs Casburn, “through it all one thing has shone through : Aldborough is an exceptional school, thanks to the dedicated staff, the support of our fantastic friends, parents and governors and, of course, the wonderful children.”

David Doak is chair of governors at Aldborough School. “Tina has been a passionate and dedicated head teacher who has inspired the staff and her pupils,” he said. “We all wish her the very best for the future. She leaves a very happy, successful school – which our new head, Alison Read, is very much looking forward to leading.”

Grandparents are special - but what are their legal rights?

When it comes to legal rights in relation to children, the all-important words are ‘parental responsibility’ – or PR as it’s more simply referred to. In most cases this means only people with PR can make an application in relation to a child – and that applies to the birth parents as named on the birth certificate, step-parents if applied for after marriage, or legal guardians. You’ll notice that an important group who could be considered to have ‘parental responsibility’ (the clue is in the name) are missing from that list – grandparents.

Sadly, grandparents do not have any automatic rights with regards to their grandchildren.

However, family courts often recognise the vital role grandparents play in their grandchildren’s lives – and whilst their rights are limited, they can apply to the court for permission (leave) to apply for a Child Arrangement Order. The court will then take the following matters into consideration;

• The applicant’s connection with the child(ren) in question

• The nature of the application itself

• Whether the application could be harmful to the child(ren)’s wellbeing in any way.

This may include whether the court feels a grandparent’s continued contact with the child(ren) might have a negative impact on the rest of the family.

Although the court will only refuse an application in extreme circumstances, it’s almost always best to see it as a last resort.

The effective use of an amicable solicitor’s letter and mediation can prevent family differences escalating, enabling all parties to move forward and act in the best interests of the grandchild(ren). In fact, attending mediation is a legal requirement for both grandparents and parents prior to court proceedings, although in a limited number of situations mediation can be made exempt.

If mediation fails, grandparents can then apply for permission (leave) of the court to consider a Child Arrangement Order, and this permission is normally given at the first hearing. At this hearing, the court will set down directions at the same time. Any safeguarding concerns will also be raised by a CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services) child welfare officer at the initial hearing.

The court will have already provided notice of the application to all those with parental responsibility. There may be objections to the application, so it’s important that grandparents obtain good quality legal advice – and obtain it early.

If the grandparents’ son or daughter (the person with parental responsibility for the child) is estranged from the family, the court will expect

that parent to reunite with the child and make the application on behalf of the grandparent(s) in the first instance – with the aim of reintroducing them back into the child’s life gradually. The grandparent should not be the one making the initial attempt – unless they are left with absolutely no alternative.

Blickling Proms weekend – a time for celebrations

It’s time to shake out those picnic blankets and prepare yourselves for the musical sensations of both Classic Ibiza and the Great British Prom events at Blickling 11-12 August. The latter is now in its 7th year and has become a huge favourite in Norfolk’s social calendar, so much so, that some guests are using the occasion to bring family and friends together to celebrate some of the biggest moments of their lives!

Step forward, Suzanne Cooper and Michael Gaffaney who became engaged back in 2015 and were looking for something really special for their big day. Suzanne explained “We saw the event advertised and immediately both had the same idea! My parents had always wanted to go to the event and Mike’s parents, who are from Wellington in New Zealand, now in the 70s were planning to travel over for what may be their last visit to the UK, so we thought that the Blickling Proms would provide such a wonderful memory for us all to enjoy on the eve of our wedding as it’s such a fantastically British event that’s enjoyed by all ages. We approached the organisers to see if it was a possibility to have a marquee and were told that it would be an honour to host the reception there.”

Following this, Suzanne and Mike contacted Blickling Hall to see if the marriage ceremony could be conducted at the Hall and from there, their dream, wedding day plans came together.

“We’re having our wedding ceremony at midday in The Temple behind Blickling Hall;

it’s a wonderful, intimate venue which will be ideal for us as we will just have both sets of parents and grown up children attending the ceremony; sadly, many of Mike’s family are unable to join us because of the distance.”

The marriage ceremony will be followed by lunch at The Buckinghamshire Arms and then, in the early evening, their wedding car will pick them up and gently approach the concert site, dropping them outside the marquee, which will look down over the lake and stage. “We have around 40 other friends and family who will be joining us for the evening and I can’t wait! We’re so excited!”

The concert lends itself well to special occasions, with previous special birthdays and corporate celebrations being hosted in marquees at the concert. And it’s not just the Great British Prom as Lisa Ward from Revival Productions said “This year we also have celebratory groups coming to the Classic Ibiza event which is fantastic, including Adrian and Amanda Dunham who founded the awardwinning Gallery Haircutters in Norwich; they are bringing a party of around 40 to celebrate their special anniversary.”

Adrian said “We came to Classic Ibiza last year and it was such a fun evening we thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate our special anniversary. It’s a great way for us to treat our staff of 28 and others who have worked with us and supported us over the last 30 years, including photographers and make-up

artists. We’re going to give the marquee an Ibiza theme and we’ve also invited clients who are coming to the event to join us for a glass of bubbly so it should be a really fun night and we’re really looking forward to it.”

The “Ibiza” marquee will be in good use on the Saturday evening too with a different group of concert-goers. Jack Baxter and his wife Valerie from Taverham have been to all the Proms concerts “We have been coming with family and friends every year, since the first concert was put on. The deal is that I book the marquee through the organisers and then family and friends buy their own tickets and we all meet up there. It’s a great excuse to get the extended family and different generations together whilst enjoying a few glasses of Pimms and taking in the atmosphere. We all thoroughly enjoy it!”

Lisa said “We are taking more and more group bookings each year. I think it’s the atmosphere that attracts groups of people. It’s such a fantastic setting to enjoy a special, memorable evening with friends.”

Radar Museum Seeks Volunteers

Here at the RAF Radar Museum in Horning we are looking for new volunteers to join us to help preserve and show off this wonderful and unique piece of history for future generations. We have exhibits outside and as well as more than 20 rooms packed with fascinating objects, in fact, we are a bit like the Tardis, bigger on the inside than it appears from the outside and you can travel back in time every day.

We want people of all ages and from all walks of life. Our current team has women and men ranging from 18 to 80.

The activities we can offer include being a room guide, visitor reception & shop and preparing and serving teas coffees and snacks in the café. We also need people for help with admin & ground works, and not least of all, we would love to find some bakers out there who would make delicious cakes on a regular basis that we can sell in the cafe, so if you are time poor you can still contribute!

Sandscaping options explained

More than 150 people attended two drop-in sessions in Bacton and Walcott to find out more about the innovative sandscaping scheme being proposed for the coastline.

A total of 85 people attended Walcott Village Hall on 12 July and a further 70 people visited Bacton Village Hall on 13 July to find out more about the project, which would see approximately 1.5 million cubic metres of sand pumped onto the beach.

The drop in sessions were open from 2pm to 8pm each day with experts from North Norfolk District Council’s Coastal Management Team, Coastal Partnership East and Royal Haskoning DHV on hand to answer people’s questions and queries.

Cllr John Lee, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Coastal Management said “I attended the session at Bacton and people were genuinely interested in the project and keen to find out more. I was pleased with how positive the feedback was and overall people were very supportive. We are working closely with the Bacton Terminal Operators to make this project happen.”

People were asked for their views on the scheme and gave their feedback on the proposals – here are some of the comments received:

August Activities at the Museum of the Broads in Stalham

On Wednesdays 9, 16, 23 and 30 August we have an inspirational Art Activity Workshop Event. Each Wednesday the free workshop, led by a specialist artist, will feature watercolour painting, sculpture, textiles with natural materials, and coloured pencil drawing on each day, so come along. The workshops are for children and grownups. It is a day to develop your skills or maybe start a new hobby.

The Vikings Day on Sunday 13 August is a chance to dress up in costumes to recreate the Vikings that were in our area in the 9th century. With plenty of activities and fun for all the family!

Public information secures second penalty for dog fouling in West Runton

North Norfolk District Council issues second fixed penalty notice with support from local community

A woman from Norwich has been fined £80 for not bagging and binning her dog’s mess.

The offence took place in Water Lane, West Runton and was captured on CCTV but it was the quick thinking of local business owners that ensured there was sufficient evidence to issue a fixed penalty notice (FPN).

Louise O’Shea and her partner Martin Hipkin, who run West Runton Café, witnessed the offence and took down details of the offender’s vehicle. This information, along with the footage of the offence, was given to North Norfolk District Council.

This is the second fine issued this year for fouling at West Runton. The first offence took place in January and the FPN was able to be issued based on CCTV evidence and vehicle registration details provided by Louise and Martin.

Louise said "We have had an ongoing issue for a long time at West Runton beach with dog fouling. We have worked closely with NNDC over the last few months to help T O P P R I C E S

identify persons that allow their dogs to foul and don’t pick up.

“It is in everyone’s interest to do this, no-one wants to visit the beach and tread in dog poo. Whilst issuing FPNs may seem extreme, it has proven to work as a deterrent.”

On 5 April three women were caught on CCTV walking a dog that fouled outside the West Runton Café. The FPN was issued to the woman in charge of the dog after she failed to pick up the dog’s poo.

Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “We want to thank Louise and Martin for their help and encourage others to report dog fouling with as much detail as possible. This just shows that dog fouling can be tackled if we work together.

“We hope this fine sends a clear message to any irresponsible dog owners out there that not cleaning up after your dog will not be tolerated by our communities.”

West Runton is one of the North Norfolk beaches is patrolled daily by our Environmental Ranger, where Dog

Control Orders are in place.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Ward Member for the Runtons, said: “Martin and Louise have told us that to the best of their knowledge this has been the only offence since April, until just this week, and that shows how effective working together can be.

“Almost everyone loves dogs but not their mess, and this action sends a clear message to anyone not acting responsibly.”

The offence was failure to comply with “The Fouling of Land by Dogs Order 2008” and Sections 55, 56, 57 of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005.

The order covers all land open to the air and to which the public are entitled or permitted to have access (with or without payment).

If a dog fouls at any time on land to which the Order applies and a person who is in charge of the dog at that time fails to remove the faeces from the land immediately, that person shall be guilty of an offence.

Last month we were delighted to welcome Anne Coleby who treated us to a demonstration entitled ‘Come Dine With Me’.

Firstly, she did a lovely table arrangement in an unusual mauve container with pink roses and lisianthus with pittosporum and viburnum foliage. This was won in the raffle by myself. All the arrangements are raffled off and I was the lucky winner this week!

Following this, she made us a cocktail in a tall glass (unfortunately not the alcoholic type) with white roses and chrysanthemums. She then demonstrated how to make a landscape arrangement with gladiolus, sunflowers and pretty agapanthus. Next was a delicious cake with pittosporum with green chrysanthemums around the edge. The Best in Show in our competition was won by Shirley Longlands who did a merry arrangement in a bottle with sea holly, hosta flowers and alliums.

The vote of thanks was given by Liz Crane.

Gresham’s Clay Shooting Club members have been crowned National Cadet Clay Target Shooting Champions at the annual National Championships in Cambridge and have returned to school with no less than seven trophies.

The team, Kees Jones, James Matthews, Theo Rossi, Mark Heath, Will Pointer, Archie Jones, Billy Addison and Joe Kooreman, took the top prize and added to it by achieving a clean sweep; winning every single team discipline against 32 of the best shooting schools and teams in the country. Phenomenally, the A team took first place in the Sporting, Down the Line and the Flush disciplines, the first ever Gresham’s team to achieve such success. As a result, the A team won gold in the overall CCF high team award and won the Garman Shield for beating all Army Cadet Force (ACF), Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Royal Air Force Cadet (ATC) teams.

Sixth Form pupils, Kees Jones and James Matthews took individual honours. Kees won the silver medal for individual high gun and gold in the CCF sporting high gun and James won gold in the individual Down the Line discipline after a shoot off for first place.

Eight members of the team went on to represent UK CCFs against UK ACFs and again they ran out on top winning gold in both the Skeet and Flush disciplines.

Team coach, Mr Charlie Mack said “Winning seven trophies is an absolutely amazing achievement and I could not be prouder of the team. It was a historic moment that will take some beating! Each member of the team was a great ambassador for Gresham’s and they looked incredibly smart in their new skeet vests, received as a kind gift from the Flux family.”

Two minutes beach clean boards

Two ‘2 minutes beach clean boards’ have been placed in Cromer.

Benjamin Kewell from Glide Surf School is the guardian of one board which is located outside the surf school on the east prom. This board was supplied by Keep Britain Tidy.

Chris and Kathy Lynch are guardians of the second board which is located by Café Reef on the west prom. This board was supplied by NNDC.

NNDC are supplying the litter pickers for both boards and Morrisons are donating recycled carrier bags for the boards.

WD to bear county regiment name

The Trustees of M&GN Society are delighted to announce that our WD 2-10-0 locomotive 90775 is to be named on Saturday 9 September at Sheringham with full military honours.

90775 will be named ‘The Royal Norfolk Regiment’ and is the first mainline steam, diesel or electric locomotive to bear this name.

Society Chairman, Neil Sharpe, says “This is something of which the Society and the Regiment are extremely proud. The naming honours generations of local soldiers who served in the regiment over almost 400 years and so cements a uniquely strong local connection between the locomotive, the North Norfolk Railway and our county.”

Discussions with the successor regiment, The Royal Anglians, have been going on for some time and, with their full support, the resulting event promises to be impressive and colourful. Not only will it have the full military honours available to the Royal Anglians, but will also see many old soldiers present to pay their respects to what we hope they will come to see as ‘their locomotive’ and undoubtedly tell their stories.

The naming will take place at Sheringham NNR station at 12noon on Saturday 9 September and will be followed by a special train taking guests to Holt and back, hauled by the newly named locomotive.

Team Silver Medal for Cromer Academy Student and Norfolk Angling Club at Junior World Shore Angling Championships

The 26th FIPS-M World Youth and Junior Shore Angling Championships were held in Ambleteuse, France from 15 to 22 July and Tronixpro Team England Juniors, which included Cromer’s Adam Molloy, returned with a silver medal from the team category.

The 1st match of the Championship was held on the northern end of Ecault beach.

The Junior team were searching for bass and flounders from the holes and gullies and with all new caps bar one managed a very respectable 5th on the day after an understandably nervous first ever performance.

On match day 2, England’s Juniors were fishing the southern end of Ecault, a far shallower end with less of the deep gullies found on the northern end. With growing confidence, the team returned a better result finishing 3rd on the day and pushing them into 3rd overall.

The Junior team returned to the southern end of Ecault beach on day 3. The team pushed hard from the start, and catching numbers of fish during the state of tide in the first hour of the match was going to be vital to the day’s result.

A superb team result with good numbers of fish gave the team its first day win, pushing the Juniors into second position overall.

The team finished the competition back on Ecault north. The French team had performed brilliantly all week and were leading the Championship by a good margin. England were catching up and knew that with another strong result, they could push the French team, especially if they had a bad day.

With the catches in the zones being so close at the end of the match, England were unsure of the result as the team left the beach. As the final results rolled in it was a nerve wracking moment for all of the teams

Another day win for England’s Juniors was enough to secure the silver medal position, a solitary point behind the seemingly untouchable French team and five points ahead of the Dutch team in bronze medal position.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

and the chemical treatment has been successful. The green has been playing even better! So many clubs have praised us this year as to the quality and speed of the green. We can only continue to thank Scottish Neil, Phil and Jackie for their time and efforts.

Having said that in the leagues it is the visiting teams that seem to do better on our green than ourselves. Odd that. The NBA team played Suffield Park at home and lost 0 - 5 following which a trip to Bawdeswell saw us lose a somewhat closer match 2 - 3 to Lakeside Pilgrims.

A journey to Drayton saw the team lose again, to the league leaders R G Carter ‘A’ 0 – 5 and in the same week at home once again we managed to lose, this time 1 – 4 to Fakenham. In between these games there was a Bales Cup match to be played away against Swaffham where the team lost overall on shots I have lost my piece of paper with the score. However one rink won and the other two lost. The Federation team has had some interesting games.
