and so with the words of the almost forgotten suffragette composer, Dame Ethel Smyth, Cantamus Choir, under the musical direction of Philip Adams, gave a captivating concert in Itteringham Village Hall.

Raising a magnificent ÂŁ800 towards the Save Itteringham Village Shop fund, the evening of music and song celebrated many female composers.

The audience were treated to the beautiful Litany by Isabella Leonarda, rallying songs of the suffragettes, and Judith Weirâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Michaelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Stratspey and Reelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; written for and performed by the renowned composer and pianist, Michael Finnissy.

If you enjoy singing, come and join Cantamus Choir. Our non-auditioned choir welcomes all voices and even if you have little previous experience, it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be long before you are singing your heart out with us.

Cantamus Choir are now taking a summer break but we will begin rehearsing again in Thorpe Market Church on our regular Thursday evenings, beginning on Thursday 7 September at 7.30pm. Focusing on our Christmas concert, the choir will be learning Brittenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ceremony of Carols (SATB version) and carols by Richard Rodney Bennett, Elizabeth Poston, Thomas Ravenscroft and Vaughan Williams, and some jolly medieval carols from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carol concert. We will also be performing in Cromer Pavilion Pier Theatre on 1 October at CHOIRfest.

Local Ambassadors Helping Politicians in the Fight Against Cancer

Whilst scientists look to find a cure, and amazing volunteers raise thousands of pounds for charity, local people have found a new way to help in the fight against cancer.

Nearly 300 people of all ages and walks of life across the country have joined Cancer Research UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ambassador Programme. This branch of the charity involves a group of passionate volunteers, some of whom have a close experience of cancer, writing to and chatting to MPs, engaging in promotion online and on social media, to try to improve public health policy and help to beat cancer sooner.

The Ambassadors have been involved in campaigns to prevent cancer, and to keep it high on the governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s agenda. For example, they were involved in promoting plain packaging for tobacco, protecting children from sunbeds and protecting local stop smoking services.

Ryan Devlin, a student from Cromer and Ambassador in Edinburgh and North Norfolk, said â&#x20AC;&#x153;I joined the Ambassadors in November and am absolutely loving it. I was a bit apprehensive to start off with, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m part of a group of wonderful, friendly people who helped me to focus my efforts and develop my skills in speaking and writing. Plus it only takes a couple of hours a fortnight, so I could easily fit it around my studies.â&#x20AC;?

Council, Cromer Church and the Royal British Legion are once again calling on the people of Cromer to come together to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This will be the main event in Norfolk to commemorate the Battle of Passchendaele.

As part of the nation’s Remembrance of the Battle of Passchendaele, representatives of the above organisations, who also come together on the Cromer War-Memorial Restoration Committee, are inviting individuals, groups and organisations to participate in an 18-hour vigil. During this time, they will stand as an honour guard at the Cromer War Memorial in intervals up to an hour in length starting at 6pm on Sunday 30 July and ending at mid-day on Monday 31 July.

The vigil and service comes 13 months after an identical event to commemorate the Battle of the Somme when nearly 50 boys, girls, men and women aged from 7 to 87 took part in the 18-hour vigil at the War Memorial to acknowledge the service and lives of those who fought at the Somme.

At mid-day when the vigil ends, a service of Remembrance will commence led by the Rev. Peter Herbert, the Curate of Cromer Church. The service will include the laying of wreaths; some of which have been especially designed by the Lady Haig Poppy Factory to commemorate the Battle of Passchendaele.

The event will take place at the Cromer War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church, Church Street Cromer. The vigil will commence at 6pm on Sunday 30 July and continue for 18 hours through the night ending at mid-day on Monday 31 July.

Throughout Monday morning (weather permitting), a display of World War One related items from the collection of Royal British Legion Chairman - John Needham, will also be on display near the War Memorial.

The Battle of Passchendaele took place from 31 July to 10 November 1917 and has come to symbolise the enormous losses and dreadful conditions of the First World War.

Like the Battle of the Somme in 1916, every community across the UK was deeply affected by the loss of men who had fought at Passchendaele, including Cromer where it is believed that up to 6 men died because of the conflict.

The event organiser Cromer Town Councillor and Deputy Mayor, David Pritchard said “Immediately following on from the Somme vigil last year I was asked about a similar event for 2017. The most significant event of 1917 was the Battle of Passchendaele. This Battle caused tremendous loss to so many with around 245,000 casualties to the British alone”. Mr. Pritchard added that “In 2014, Cromer had hosted a successful concert and service to mark the centenary of WW1 commencing and we were joined by the Cromer-born Baroness Gillian Shepherd”. He said that “Cromer Church, the Royal British Legion and Cromer Town Council have all worked together so well during the centenary of World War One and this event is another example of the three groups continuing to acknowledge and remember the lives lost in conflict”.

Through the four years that mark the centenary, events have taken place in Cromer against a backdrop of fundraising to repair and renovate the Cromer War Memorial. Recently achieving an amount of £24,500 against a £42,000 target, the War Memorial Fund Raising Committee have recently appointed the contractor to conduct the work which will commence early next year.

Summer Solstice Yoga for Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund

Vee Zappia and Debbie Mason organised another Open Air Yoga event at Felbrigg Hall Estate to celebrate the summer solstice, which is when the sun reaches its peak in the sky creating the longest day and shortest night. It is a time to join together and celebrate.

This was a charity event in aid of The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK. A total of £400 was raised in just one hour.

Ellen’s grandmother attended and gave a small speech explaining about the charity. This was very emotional for her and touched everyone's hearts - it was a truly magical practise in surroundings so beautiful.

A big thank you goes out to all that helped and attended.

There will be another at the same venue in September to celebrate the autumn equinox and to raise money for this local charity.

Vee has been teaching yoga for 12 years and runs classes in various venues locally.

Wind In The Willows is coming to North Lodge Park in Cromer!

Boxtree Productions are coming to North Lodge Park in Cromer on 20 August this year with their fantastic new musical adaptation of 'Wind In The Willows'.

Boxtree Productions have been touring open air theatre since 2014 and have produced musical versions of 'The Three Musketeers', 'Around The World In 80 Days' and 'The Scarlet Pimpernel'.

This year they are producing their own version of Kenneth Grahame's classic tale, 'Wind In The Willows'.

“North Lodge Park is an ideal spot for Open Air Theatre and we are really proud to be offered the chance to work with the Boxtree team bringing this show to Cromer. Last year's performance of Goldilocks set a high standard, and we're confident that Boxtree are up to the job!” said Samantha Annison, Chair of the Friends of North Lodge Park.

Join Mole as she throws down her broom and heads out to find adventure. She meets Ratty, Badger and Toad, whose exploits cause all manner of trouble. When the conniving and criminal Weasels set their sights on Toad Hall it's up to Mole, Ratty, Toad and Badger to take back the Hall and learn the Weasels a lesson.

Featuring lots of fast-paced fun, excitement and original music, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Morgan the Railway Cat on the North Norfolk Railway Many of you will be familiar with the Children's Play carriage on Sheringham Station.

This was designed as a free attraction for young visitors to the North Norfolk Railway and last year had a makeover. The engine of the play train inside the carriage has been renamed 'Morgan' and has a super 'Morgan’ face on the front. Morgan is the Poppy Line's very own story book cat and we are proud to announce that our long awaited book, Morgan the Railway Cat, has been published, thanks to the kind sponsorship of two volunteers.

The story was written by a railway volunteer and illustrated by Colin Wyatt of 'The Poddington Pea' books and TV series.

The book is already on sale in the three station shops and there will be an official launch of the book in the form of Special Fun Days on 19 and 20 August.

These will take place at Weybourne station from 10.30.am until 3pm. You will be able to meet Morgan and the characters from the book, all of whom work on the railway. You can visit and recognise everything from the pictures in the book. There will be games to play and things to make and cartoon drawing with Colin and good things to eat too.

Please note there can be no parking at Weybourne station for the duration of the event. Just come along and have a good old-fashioned family day out.

Both Cromer lifeboats go to assist powerboat

A request was made to launch RNLI Cromers all weather boat ‘Lester’ late on Wednesday 5 July.

Whilst on a training exercise Cromer’s D class lifeboat ‘George and Muriel’ went to assist a power boat in difficulties.

The power boat ‘Double Trouble’ was on the way to Wells from Great Yarmouth when engine and mechanical problems caused it to need help.

Cromer’s inshore lifeboat was on a training exercise and assessing crew when it saw the boat needed help. It was soon apparent that a tow would be needed, so a call was put in for ‘Lester’ to be launched. By 16.45 ‘Lester’ was at the scene, a tow rope was attached to the powerboat and soon they were underway. The photo shows both lifeboats assisting the powerboat. ‘Lester’s’ crew returned to the boathouse later and by 20.10 the lifeboat was made ready for its next call out. The inshore boat had returned at the end of training.

John Davies, RNLI Coxswain for Cromer RNLI Lifeboat, said ‘We were able to get to the scene very quickly due to the training exercise noticing the powerboats difficulties. Our regular training means we can respond quickly to those in need’.

Britain’s Most Expensive Divorce Lawyer and the Need for Pre-Nuptial Agreements

The Daily Mail recently ran an article on Ayesha Vardag who acted for the German heiress Katrin Radmacher in Neale Grearson 2010. This was the case that protected Miss Radmacher’s £100 million fortune from her ex-husband Nicolas Granatino because of a Pre-Nuptial Agreement they had entered into. This was a radical change in British divorce law since when the Courts have been much more willing to uphold Pre-Nuptial Agreements.

With the rate of divorces in this country now approaching 1 in 2 the significance and future importance of Pre-Nuptial Agreements has never been greater. For a couple getting married at an early stage in their lives when their financial positions are roughly equal they might conclude that a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is not necessary. For those that might be entering into a second marriage or have inherited wealth earlier in their life Pre-Nuptial Agreements become very important and arguably vital.

The Daily Mail quotes Ayesha as saying that “it is like thinking you don’t need fire insurance because your house won’t ever burn down” and that is a fair analogy. The discussion between an engaged couple about having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement may be a difficult one but arguably a Pre-Nuptial Agreement should be part of the pre wedding planning list along with booking a venue and ordering flowers. Is that an over materialistic approach or reality?

The increase in the divorce rate is not necessarily because marriages are less stable. The reality however is that everyone is living longer and during a marriage people do fall out of love with one another. Each (or both) spouses change and it is not an admission of failure to accept that. Making a Will is now accepted as essential (although scarily not everybody does have a Will). Lasting Powers of Attorney are catching up but are still not as widely used as should be the case. Pre-Nuptial Agreements are the next big growth area because in very uncertain

times and the fear of what might happen on a divorce they are likely to become an even more essential part of pre-marriage planning. In fact there is an argument to say that with a Pre-Nuptial Agreement a couple should be even more confident about getting married as the fear about what might happen on a divorce and the financial repercussions is going to be safeguarded against.

The work of divorce lawyers could reduce substantially if everybody had a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Rather like lawyers earning more money from disputes over Wills where they are not drawn up correctly (or there being no Will at all). Without a Pre-Nuptial Agreement the danger is that a divorcing couple are left in the hands of a Judge with ultimate discretion and no guarantee as to how such things as inherited wealth or pre-owned assets should be taken into account. Pre-Nuptial Agreements are not yet completely enforceable and there is still no legislation to give them formal status but if a Pre-Nuptial Agreement is objectively “fair” and the following three “rules” are carried out the starting point should be that the Pre-Nuptial Agreement is enforceable and it would be for the person opposing it to show good reason why it should not be upheld:

1. Both of the couple take independent advice from a Solicitor.

2. There is an exchange of financial information so that each knows what the other is worth.

3. The Agreement is not entered into too close to the marriage and usually this should be more than 28 days beforehand.

There will always need to be provision for a change or at least a review should there be a fundamental alteration in the situation. In particular if the couple have children that could be a “deal changer” so there does need to be careful drafting of the Agreement.

There’s a fun new craze all about making your food not only taste great, but look picture perfect too. People are finding ingenious ways to bring that flare and extra colour, and a large number of innovative home-chefs are decorating with edible flowers.

Now, of course, eating flowers is certainly not a new concept, but I’ve been seeing some great ways to incorporate them into your dinner party, or simply posh up your granola to give you a morning perk.

Putting flowers into ice cubes preserves their colour and shape and look fantastic dropped into a celebratory glass of something fizzy. This works well with the cucumber flavoured borage flowers in some chilled Pimms. Some people might choose to save time by simply floating fresh flowers atop a punch bowl.

Cromer sea-life mural completed

A large sea-life mural surrounding the new Cromer West Prom play area has been finished.

The 26m-long mural has been painted on the walls around the recently opened shipwreck play area. It depicts underwater flora and fauna local to North Norfolk’s coast, including seals, fish and seaweed.

The new mural is part of North Norfolk District Council’s £1m Cromer West Prom investment that includes the recently opened ‘futureproofed’ catering kiosk, toilets and showers, as well as the play area, that can all be craned to higher ground in the event of a storm surge.

In addition, new benches and picnic seating have been installed on roof-top platforms by the play equipment and Melbourne slope, offering far-reaching views.

Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Leisure said “We have had a tremendously positive response from the community regarding the play area and this mural only adds to the excitement of the space.

“To be climbing on

a shipwreck, and be surrounded by images of sea creatures and plants just increases the fun and we hope it inspires imaginations.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

On 8th July we had another very enjoyable day at the Hog Roast at Stephanie’s home. As it was a lovely day the party tents this year provided welcome relief from the sun rather than, as on some occasions, offering shelter from the rain. It was lovely to share the day with our friends and fellow cat lovers and for them to have the opportunity to see some of the cats in our care. We would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the day a success but especially Stephanie and Andrea on the catering front and Kenny and Brian for putting the party tents up.

When responding to requests for help with neutering, we often get calls from people who have purchased their pet via one of the websites offering animals for sale. We hear of instances where people have taken a cat or kitten into their homes only to find that they have health issues as the animals have not been to the vets for a health check. They also find that the kitten is much younger than they were advised and should still be with its mother.

We also see cats and kittens for sale at ridiculous prices because of their colour, breed, etc, while an identical cat or kitten may be offered for much less because the owner has not been able to find it a new home.

For those looking for a pedigree pet, I would suggest they make sure they see the relevant paperwork giving the animal’s parentage and ensure that they receive the registration forms confirming its pedigree.

For all other cats please bear in mind that most charities charge the same adoption fee irrespective of colour or breed. Cats’ Protection Advocacy Department, together with other animal welfare charities, are working hard to try and get changes in the law, which is one of the reasons we do monitor the activities taking place on these sites and can advise them accordingly.

75 Mile Challenge Walk Would you like to help raise funds for the British Heart Foundation?

A new BHF fundraising group has just started up in Cromer, aiming to help win the â&#x20AC;&#x153;fight for every heartbeatâ&#x20AC;?. This is the Cromer groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first challenge â&#x20AC;Ś and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s refreshing, interesting and healthy!

Seventy five miles of walks over four weeks is Val Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bright idea - to help celebrate her 75th birthday, and to raise funds for her favourite good cause.

She has been inspired by Kieran Sandwell who is walking the coast of Britain to raise funds for the BHF. Kieran, grateful for a lifesaving heart transplant and now able to give something back, came through Cromer in February and Val accompanied him on part of

this walk. Our 75 Mile Challenge Walks range from 2miles to 8.5 miles across countryside, along riverbanks, through woodlands, over hills, along clifftops and beaches. There will be interesting churches to visit, perhaps a nice cafe for a rest stop, and always the glorious Norfolk views to enjoy!

These are comfortable walks and start points are accessible by car or bus.

They are taking place on Wednesdays and Fridays during the day and Sundays in the afternoon starting on 12 July. The last walk is on Friday 11 August from Salthouse church, finishing at an exhibition of paintings and films.

Hilary Cox, Chairman of Cromer Walkers are Welcome, is joining Val on all these walks along with other members of the group.

Walking is an excellent form of exercise

Inter School Poetry Slam

The inter-school poetry slam was held on Monday 3 July at the Little Theatre in Sheringham.

Four local primary schools, Langham, Holt, Sheringham and Roughton took part and each had three teams of children who performed the poems that they had composed. This was the culmination of a project that involved workshops by Molly Naylor and mini-slams that had been held at each school to determine which teams went forward for the grand slam.

The judges were Debbie Thompson (Director of The Little Theatre), David Bull (Operations Manager of the Holt Festival), Alan Leventhall (Community Librarian for Fakenham and Holt), and Emma Corlett (County Councilor for Norwich)

The prize winners were as follows : • Best Performance - Holt Community Primary School • Best Writing - Langham Village School • Most Original Ideas - St Mary's Endowed CEVA Primary School, Roughton • Highest Scoring Team (for performance and writing) - Leaf of Ideas, Sheringham Community Primary School • Highest Scoring School (for performance and writing) Sheringham Community Primary School

There were also some individual prizes for outstanding achievement.

Phil Barrett, Chairman of FALCON commented "What can I say? This morning’s Grand Slam was a fantastic success, on every level – the confident performances of the children, the atmosphere in the theatre,

the sense of occasion and of being in a theatre, the friendly supportive understanding of the children towards each other, and their different schools, the sense of rising to the occasion, the inclusive and perceptive judging and prize giving, and not least the superb performance by Luke Wright, which would have been the envy of any performance poetry programme.

I hope very much that we can find a way of making this event happen again next year, and perhaps of involving even more schools in it.

BATTLE OF PASSCHEnDAELE - Cromer Town Council, the Royal British Legion and Cromer Church would like to invite individuals and representatives of organisations to participate in an overnight vigil at Cromer War Memorial to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele. The vigil will start at 18:00 on 30 July 2017 and end at 12noon on 31 July 2017. Time slots of up to an hour are available. The vigil will be followed at 12noon by a short Service of Remembrance by the War Memorial.

Cromer Marrams Bowls Club

the team did not lose but drew 4 – 4, so well done to them. At Southrepps one Friday afternoon the team discovered a green where bowls ran against bias and needed more than just a ‘roll’ to reach the jack. As you may gather the result was 0 – 8.

When we play friendly games at home, as in all other matches the captains select the rinks to play on at random. Bernard is not impressed with our rink 4 and would rather play on any other. Our friendly visitors this period included Lincolnshire Vice Presidents who played mixed rinks against us. The game was won by Cromer, but the score seems to have eluded me. Watton (Loch Neaton) BC visited, as they do every year, and a very friendly and jolly bunch they were, Again Cromer were the victors by 84 shots to 61. We do seem to be having a very successful season this year I must say. 3 triples visited from Buxton and we missed the showers. Now this was a close game which Cromer just won 50 – 42. I am looking forward to the return match next month. Finally we entertained Aldiss Park BC from Dereham.

They always organise a visit to the Cromer Pier Show for the evening so having arrived late morning they enjoy their annual visit to the

… where some special treatment has been arranged to make the green even better. It will have been closed for a week by the time you read this, and I hope that the special spaying has been successful. The Hansells NBA Wednesday team have continued with their up and down season. At home against North Walsham the game resulted in a 1 – 4 defeat, but then two days later at home to Holt saw the team reverse the score with a 4 – 1 win. The next game was away to Cawston on their green and the team lost ½ - 4½. You can’t get much worse than that! The Federation team had their first game of this period against Foulsham cancelled as the Bawdeswell green, where the opponents play, was waterlogged. The team then travelled some 46 miles to Marham and lost 0 – 9.

All the Cromer players struggled on a challenging green, against many opposition players who were experienced at the conditions. It’s a long journey back after that I can tell you. I have to apologise to the NANSA team, and their Captain Bernard for getting a result wrong last time. At Cawston

A summer of sporting activities

Archery, street dance, multi-sports and football among a wide range of sports and activities on offer for youngsters this summer. A huge range of children's activities will be on offer at North Norfolk District Council-managed community sports centres during the Summer school holidays. The sessions will offer healthy and fun activities for youngsters aged between 4 and 12 years.

Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham sports centres have drawn up their diary of activities, which can be viewed on Facebook, via the North Norfolk District Council website and on leaflets being distributed to local schools.

Activities begin on 24 July and run through to 1 September. Costs range from £3.50 for shorter sessions to £10 for all day sessions. Many of the days feature early drop off and late pick up if parents need to work, meaning wrap around care is often available from 8am to 4.30pm.

North Norfolk District Council is also offering beach events at Cromer, Sea Palling and the Runtons, countryside events at Holt Country Park, Sadlers Wood and Pretty Corner Woods, and the fifth annual Fun Day Out at Pretty Corner Woods.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure Health and Wellbeing, said “Whether your child is a trampolining or football fan, or they want to try something new, it is well worth looking at the long list of activities being made available. We’re delighted to be able to offer our community these sessions, which will be run by qualified and dedicated staff, at really affordable prices.”
