London Marathon for Cromer Anita

Forty-six year old Anita Bullen is a mum of two boys and lives in Cromer. Anita’s eldest son is 15 and is autistic. He attends Woodfields School in Sheringham.

A year ago, along with some friends, Anita joined North Norfolk Beach Runners Club & a beginner’s course. Up until then she had not done any running. At the end of the course she found that she really enjoyed running and became a member! Anita started attending Sheringham Park runs on Saturdays then entered 5k and 10k races, completing her first half marathon in Peterborough on 16 October!

London Marathon for Cromer Anita

She then entered the ballot for the London 2017 Marathon but was unsuccessful.

Because of her son’s autism, she decided to apply for a charity place and was delighted to find out she had been successful.

She is running for the PHAB charity, a national charity, which does amazing work with disabled children. Anita had to raise a target of £1,650 for her place and in between work, family life and training she has managed to achieve this.

Anita says ‘family & friends have been such a support, along with Cromer Academy where I work as Catering Manager! The Academy held a mufti day for me, which

was a great help!’

She is counting down the days until she runs the London marathon on Sunday 23 April, St. George's day and is looking forward to the atmosphere, which she says will be ‘amazing atmosphere’.

Anita says her inspiration is her son but adds ‘the amazing support from NNBR has prepared me for this. It is such a great Club and without the training plan and coaching it would not have been possible’.

North Norfolk District Council’s famous Bagot goat herd moves back into town and will double in size later in the year.

A herd of eight Bagot goats have been moved back into their spring and summer residence on Cromer’s cliff.

The goats have been clearing land in recent months at Happy Valley.

Their move back into the heart of Cromer was made today thanks to NNDC officers.

The Bagot billies, which have appeared on television and in newspapers, will be joined by another eight Bagots from Cumbria sometime in May. In order to make adequate space for the expanded herd, the size of their enclosure will be more than doubled when new fencing is installed to the west of the current enclosure.

The enclosure currently stops at the white steps above the promenade, but will be extended to the zig zag steps. Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “Last year the goats were very popular with visitors, but also did a fabulous job at managing the habitat.

“It is excellent news that there will be an addition to the herd later in the year, which means an extra attraction for our visitors but also an extended area which will be naturally managed by these brilliant undergrowth clearing machines.”

In the past the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials commended for excellence rather than grass and therefore lastHighly year kept plant growth over the area under in person centred care control.

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are very hardy and easy to tame.

Hey you cool cats, Cromer’s 60s Festival is outta sight!

Get your groove on this St George’s Day with Cromer’s first ever tribute festival to the 1960s.

The 1960s was full of great music, great clothes and great new ideas, and this year the dudes at North Norfolk District Council and Cromer Pier are inviting you to celebrate the decade in style.

From Mods to mini-skirts, The Beatles to The Beach Boys, flower power to flares, Mini Coopers to mood rings, the 60s were a gas! So why not re-live some of that magic at Cromer’s 60s Festival on The Pier and Promenade on St George’s Day, April 23.

Cllr Maggie Prior Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure, Health and Wellbeing at North Norfolk District Council said “Whether you remember the 60s or want to know what all the fuss was about, Cromer’s 60s Festival is set to capture the flavour, sights and sounds of that era.

“We’re so pleased this community event has attracted such support from groups, entertainers and businesspeople wanting to make the day special. Keep looking at our Facebook and Twitter posts for more confirmed activities and stands.

“As they used to say in the 60s – be there or be square!”

The festival will be officially opened by TV presenter Helen McDermott and showcase live music and dance, vintage vehicles, screenings of the 1966 World Cup, vintage clothes, Punch and Judy and great food. And in The Pier bar there will even be 1960s Happy Hours with beer at £1-a-pint!

Cllr Nigel Pearce, Ward Member for Suffield Park, Cromer who has championed and promoted the 60s festival for Cromer, said “The 1960s is the decade when Britain led the world in music and fashion; that really was a time when we ruled the airwaves. St George’s Day is a time to feel proud and holding this new event on St George’s Day should make us all feel proud of Cromer and the people who make our town and our district so amazing.”

Canaan Christian Centre Thanksgiving

The Canaan Christian Centre, a charity based in Sheringham and at present housing local homeless families, is holding their 39th celebration of Thanksgiving on Saturday 6 May at the Centre at 21 Holt Road, Sheringham.

They welcome David Hayden, who was formerly the vicar of Cromer Parish Church and the Ven Archdeacon of Norwich as their speaker.

The Cromer Gospel Choir and local children will be taking part, as will others and it looks like being a wonderful afternoon.

The money raised this year will go to the local children's ministry at Canaan, for updating their play facilities and improving the electrical sound system in the Wolery where they meet.

Cromer Music Evenings invited Hannah Watson to give a solo recital, as previously she has performed at Templewood twice as an accompanist.

Mozart's Sonata in F major K332 being the first item to open the concert, was to me a performance of sheer mastery, in as much as the Allegro 1st movement was a joy to behold. The powerful and delicate execution, especially of the ornamentation, was performed with an exceptional quality of technical expertise.

The 2nd Adagio movement with its beautiful and serene melodic line, where the Alberti bass accompaniment never dominated the sublime cantabile control – again the embellishments never disturbed the gentle pulse throughout

the whole movement.

The 3rd Allegro Assai movement aroused the listener with its scintillating introduction, progressing from the major to the minor, always maintaining the given tempo directions, here I am sure Watson exceeded the speed limit! Breathtaking indeed!

Janacek's On an Overgrown Path, Book ll certainly lived up to its title, as the three pieces did not seem to progress to any conclusion, but were very interesting and unpredictable – full of excitement and doleful in content from Scherzo to delicate passages, where Watson's use of the sustaining pedal created atmospheric mystery.

The final piece, Chopin's Sonata No 3 in B minor in four movements. Chopin writing of this sonata strayed from sonata form, as he found the writing of such work difficult, but this wonderful lyrical, majestic and beautiful work encapsulated many of Chopin's ideas and style – the performance of the last Presto movement brought a virtuosic interpretation from Hannah Watson, a young artist who is in great demand within the world of music.

Sculpture complements Rose Garden restoration

The empty plinth in North Lodge Park gets a new occupant

For over 18 months volunteers from the Friends of North Lodge Park have been restoring the Rose Garden in the Park, working around the empty plinth which once supported a sun dial.

When local sculptor Bob Catchpole heard the Friends were looking for a sculpture for the empty plinth he donated one.

“I have worked with old garden tools for many years, giving them a new role and purpose,” said Bob. “So when I heard about the work of the volunteers in the Park I thought that my use of recycled tools to produce art really fitted with their aspirations and wanted to contribute to the restoration.”

“Thanks to Bob's work you may never look at your garden forks and spades in quite the same way again. But that’s the whole point,” said Barry Meadows from the Friends of North Lodge Park.

“We're really interested in bringing

works of art to the Park and Bob's really generous offer gives us a flying start.

If we get a positive response from the public we'll look for other ways to work with the District Council to bring more art to the Park.”

As part of the licence for the community café in the Park, the Friends agreed with the District Council to restore the Rose Garden, and maintain the gardens across the western end of the Park. The Friends include volunteers working in the gardens and the café. Over the last winter the pergolas in the Rose Garden were strengthened, overhanging trees were pruned, the climbing roses were all replaced along with other plants, and dropped kerbs were installed to make it easier to access the gardens. As well as contributing to the gardens, money raised in the café will be put towards other park projects, including a new children’s play area.

“It's amazing what the volunteers have achieved in the gardens”, said Councillor John Lee, Chairman of the District Council who will be unveiling the sculpture on the 4th April.

“Installing this sculpture on the empty plinth is a real achievement and I'm proud to be part of t he project supporting the Friends.”

For many years, Bob has been using agricultural and garden tools in his sculptural works, something which is a surreal and wonderful sight at the same time. After attending both Norwich School and Norwich Art School, he studied Fine Art at Newcastle University before going on to a post-graduate degree at the world-renowned Slade School of Fine Art in London. He has spent a large part of his professional life teaching sculpture, latterly being head of sculpture at Eton College, Wind for for almost 30 years. He established his first studio in North Walsham, Norfolk in 1985 and has lived there ever since.

Coming to North East Norfolk : The Big Sit on Sunday 7 May 5am – 8pm

The aim of the Big Sit is to record as many species as possible from a chosen 17-feet diameter circle in a 24 hour period, though realistically most sites are up and running between dawn and dusk. The Club will be operating from a series of public sites across the Club area, including Felbrigg Park, so come along and share in the fun. Anyone can participate - even create your own circle in your garden as several members did last year. At the 2015 events, 115 species were recorded in total across all seven sites! From doing the Big Sit we hope to gain valuable data about visible migration and the birds in our area. Results will be collated and published in the NENBC newsletter, The Pied Flyer. Girlguiding Norfolk Archive Resource Centre (ARC) training, coffee mornings, clubs, etc. The main room is a good size (5mx6.4m), and has tables and chairs for 24. Free wifi is available. There is also a kitchen with fridge, microwave and tea/coffee-making facilities.

Girlguiding Norfolk is very proud of its new Archive Resource Centre (ARC), built in the grounds of Patteson Lodge, across the road from Hautbois House at Coltishall.

It was purpose built, so that our many archives and collections could be taken from lofts, garages and attics, and housed somewhere appropriate where they could be properly looked after and made accessible to as many people as possible. They are being kept in rooms at an appropriate temperature and monitored for bugs and beasties!

Our recent conservation report was very positive. A working group meets weekly and is compiling an inventory of what we have; to date we have found some wonderful treasures!

There have been a variety of people using the building to date. A weekend residential group slept in the Lodge next door and spent the days sorting archives, sewing on labels and badges, recording interviews, and putting together handling boxes. “It was amazing to see how old some of the things in the archives were! The oldest item was from 1916, ” said Megan, a guide on her Baden Powell Award (the highest a guide can achieve) weekend. “A group of girls from North Oulton Senior Section (for 14-25 year

There are several upcoming opportunities to visit the ARC and see what's going on. There is an afternoon tea party on Sunday 4 June, from 2-5pm, with a very special guest from the Great British Bake off, Kate Barmby (a Brownie leader). We will also be open to the public on 9 and 10 September as part of Heritage Open Days, and in true guiding fashion we will be serving tea and cakes!

Conflict and Collaboration Cantamus Concert

Cantamus are Voting for Women at their next concert, ‘Conflict and Collaboration’. Celebrating beautiful, but regrettably ignored, music from the 17th century to just before WWI.

They will perform ‘Songs of Sunrise’ by the feisty Dame Ethel Smyth, her stirring March of the Women, united with its fellows ‘Laggard Dawn’ and ‘1910’, the ‘Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary’ by an Italian contemporary of Sir Christopher Wren - Isabella Leonarda (1620-1704) and delightful Edwardian miniatures by Amy Beach and Emily Tallmadge.

The concert on 19 May at 7pm at Thorpe Market Church (NR11 8UA), also features two collaborative works written by Fauré (of ‘Requiem’ fame) and Messager (once famous in the UK for his operettas ‘Monsieur Beaucaire’ and ‘Véronique’) - a Mass for the fishing village of Villerville in Normandy, and a wicked send-up of Wagner’s Ring Cycle as a set of brisk piano-duet Quadrilles.

The Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild Annual General Meeting, held on 28 March, saw three of its members receive thanks for their service and contributions to RNLI fundraising.

The presentation ceremony was introduced by Mr Richard Leeds, Cromer RNLI Operations Manager and the presentations were made by Mr Ben Long, RNLI Community Fundraising Manager and Mrs Maggie Leeds, Guild Vice Chairman.

Retiring Guild Secretary, Mrs Linda Baker, received a certificate and a beautiful orchid in recognition of her four years in post. North Norfolk Railway : HLF Supported Suburban Coach Project The North Norfolk Railway is proud to announce the launch of the totally refurbished suburban coach set which has been a joint project between the Railway and the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The launch took place on 15 April at Sheringham Station and was followed by the coaches being hauled for the first time with passengers to Holt and returning via Weybourne. Invited guests, including representatives from the HLF, travelled on the train which consisted of the two coaches funded by the HLF and the remaining two funded by the North Norfolk Railway. The project was started following HLF approval in 2014 and was completed early this year.

These locomotive hauled Mk1 Suburban carriages were some of the last of a long line of non-gangwayed coaches reaching back to the dawn of railways. From the 1830s the early railway carriage builders continued the practises of the old road coach builders by building passenger compartments with opposing bench seats and exterior access doors to each side of the compartment. This was the most common coach design right through into the early 1950s, the corridor coach, with a

gangway though to the next vehicle, only coming on the scene in the 1880s. Introduced in 1954 these Mk1 Suburban carriages survived until 1977, being the last of their kind on the British Railways network.

The final examples ended their days working Suburban services out of London’s King’s Cross station before being superseded by modern electric services.

The Suburban project was the brainchild of Clive Morris who was Chairman of the North Norfolk Railway during part of the project period. Sadly, Clive passed away part way through the project, completion of which he would have been proud to see.

On the same day the Clive Morris Room at Weybourne was formally opened, inaugurated by Betty Morris.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has contributed around £ 90,000 - we have received generous donations of £50,000 and the rest has been paid directly out of our reserves. We are looking to using these carriages in our Galas – first on 21-23 April and in a special “Suburban Travel Week” from 2 – 9 July.”

Maytime Medley Art Exhibition

The very pretty St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market will once again be hosting an art exhibition Friday 28 April to Bank Holiday Monday 1 May (open daily 11am until 4pm) by local artist Rosalie Osborne Gibb, featuring a diverse range of subjects, depicting her love of the coast and countryside, from exquisitely detailed watercolours The Old Lady at Thornham by to bold and colourful acrylics and soft Rosalie Osborne Gibb pastels.

Signed Limited Edition prints, plus gifts and a wide range of greetings cards featuring Rosalie’s artwork will also be available. Rosalie’s art has sold worldwide, as well as throughout the UK, through local galleries and exhibitions and to several private collectors.

The exhibition will also feature beautiful glass items handmade by Terrie and a range of oak items, including clocks and lamp bases, made by Ian Clifft.

As usual, there will be a good selection of used books, teas, coffees and delicious homemade cakes, and the beautiful wildflower conservation churchyard to stroll around.

North Norfolk artists get set to invite the public into their studios

Hundreds of artists across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios.

The event, firmly established as one of the biggest open studios schemes in the country, is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (27 May – 11 June) provides the opportunity for artists to show and sell their work to a large and diverse audience. It also encourages everyone, from ardent art-lovers to the curious first-time visitor, to get out and about, see art and meet artists in the informal surroundings of their studios.

More than 500 artists will be taking part this year across 254 venues throughout Norfolk and in North Norfolk 149 artists will be taking part across 83 venues.

SHERINGHAM AND CROMER LIONS CLUB On Saturday 8 April we held a Quiz and Chips at The Morley Club in Sheringham.

Twenty seven people enjoyed a lively quiz, a fish and chips supper and a raffle which raised £55.

A total of between £100 and £200 was raised for local causes.

You cannot be serious – But that’s Family Law!

by Neale Grearson Family Law Solicitor Clapham & Collinge Solicitors As was widely reported in the national media the Court of Appeal gave its decision on the appeal of Tini Owens against the decision not to allow her to have a divorce based on her husband’s unreasonable behaviour.

Despite huge criticism by the Court of Appeal and in particular the President of the Family Division Sir James Munby the Court of Appeal went along with the original Court decision that Mrs Owens should not be able to have a divorce. This was the case where the original Judge effectively thought that the allegations of unreasonable behaviour made by Mrs Owens were normal for marriage and she should just effectively put up with it. Sir James Munby made specific reference to the manipulation that often goes on to achieve a divorce based on unreasonable behaviour with parties exaggerating or on occasions even giving incorrect information so as to get a divorce. However the Court of Appeal would not go so far as to overrule the original Family Court’s decision because effectively that is the law!

We are left with a very out of date process for a divorce that is based on only one ground which is the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage. However to show that breakdown this can only be done in one of five ways. For an immediate divorce that can only be based on adultery or unreasonable behaviour and that is where the dilemma lies. A husband or wife needs to “blame” the other to obtain a divorce and to raise very often what can be very emotive issues about behaviour. What is sufficient to be classed as unreasonable behaviour to allow a divorce is much more difficult to define. Over the years best practice has always been not to say all that could be said so as to avoid making a difficult situation even worse. The Court of Appeal has now effectively said that must end and there is a scary prospect of much more intensive detail being given about unreasonable behaviour to avoid the risk of the Family Court refusing to allow a divorce to take place.

The Government has indicated that it has no plans to introduce no fault divorce. We are therefore left with the current fiasco of no one really knowing what is sufficient to be classed as unreasonable behaviour to give good reason for a divorce. In very extreme situations it will be obvious but in more borderline ones are we now faced with a situation where people are going to exaggerate details of their relationship and try even harder to blame the other. Is that not going to be even more of a manipulation of the law?

And yet recently it has been reported in the press that the Ipswich Family Court allowed a divorce based on a row over Marmite!

But is this what husbands and wives want? Whilst the case of Mr and Mrs Owens is an extreme one the vast majority of divorces do not currently result in the divorce itself being defended. Whilst it is very rare for there to be an agreement on a divorce the reality is that one party very often has to acknowledge that because the other wants a divorce it is going to happen.

Pragmatic positions have to be taken because little is often served in a very expensive “fight” over whether there should be a divorce at all as only the lawyers realistically benefit from very large legal costs.

So what is the solution? No fault divorce remains on the agenda of Resolution and is a high priority. It works successfully in other countries where the emphasis is on dealing with financial repercussions and arrangements for children – not the actual divorce itself. If a marriage is over should the Court stand in the way of a couple wanting a divorce? Whilst there are those that would say that at the moment it is too easy to get a divorce by way of the manipulation that Sir James Munby refers to in reality is there any good reason to keep a couple married if one of them does not want to be in that

Holt Festival Art Prize renamed the Sir John Hurt Art Prize – now open for entries

One of the east of England’s top art prizes has been renamed in honour of one of Norfolk’s most famous adopted sons. The Holt Festival Art Prize will be known as Holt Festival - Sir John Hurt Art Prize to celebrate the screen and stage acting legend, who, before his sad death in January had been a great enthusiast for the Prize. He served on the panel of judges and presented the award to the winning entry as often as acting commitments allowed.

Holt Festival - Sir John Hurt Art Prize is open to artists Sir Jon Hurt presenting the Award in 2014 to winner everywhere. In Francesca Perkins previous years, Photo: Rodney Smith there have been entries by artists from all over the UK. There is a cash prize of £1,500 for the winner and, in addition, the winning artwork will be exhibited at Norwich’s prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in the autumn.

All types of visual art are welcome but entries must be submitted before the deadline of midnight Sunday 18 June 2017. Judges will select a shortlist of 25-30, which will be exhibited at the Auden Theatre, Holt from 23-30 July.

The winner will be announced at a private view on the evening of 23 July. The exhibition is part of the Holt Festival Art Trail that also takes in many other galleries and exhibition spaces around the town.

Alongside his amazing acting career, the late Sir John Hurt was a gifted painter. At the age of 17 he attended The Grimsby Art School (now the East Coast School of Art and Design) and in 1959, he won a scholarship to Saint Martin's School of Art (now Central St. Martin’s) in London.

He continued to paint throughout his life. He was also passionately interested in encouraging others, in recent years becoming Chancellor of Norwich University of The Arts.

Holt Festival Art Prize organiser and international art appraiser James Glennie commented ‘Holt Festival was keen to acknowledge the support and friendship Sir John offered the Festival. It seemed an obvious move to rename the Art Prize in his honour, he generously supported the Prize, either awarding or judging or both almost every year since its inception.

Water, water everywhere… so how do plants respire?

All living cells respire, it allows them to grow and multiply, as well as actively function. Plants must respire to stay alive.

Aerobic respiration is the process by which glucose and oxygen are converted into water, carbon dioxide and energy. This is the most efficient method that plants can obtain energy. It is seen as the opposite reaction to photosynthesis, in which carbon dioxide, water and sunlight are converted into oxygen and glucose.

Plants use the oxygen produced in photosynthesis for their own respiration, and, thankfully for us, release excess oxygen into the atmosphere.

When no oxygen is present, anaerobic respiration takes place, and fewer ‘energy’ molecules are created. A by-product of this is ethanol, which in high quantities will kill the cells, and oxygen must be used to remove it again.

Usually, when we anaerobically respire we get a build-up of lactic acid that causes a stitch, but if you think that’s bad then spare a thought for poor plants that can have entire sections pickle to death.

In terrestrial plants, oxygen from the air moves into the leaves through tiny air-holes called stomata. Their roots use the small quantities of oxygen in the soil to respire, which becomes impossible for them in waterlogged conditions.

They will anaerobically respire for a short period of time, but need the soil to aerate again to recover.

plants, using modified terrestrial features to withstand emerged, submerged, or floating conditions.

These are known as hydrophytes or macrophytes.

So, if terrestrial plants can’t live on anaerobic respiration long-term, why don’t aquatic plants die?

• Some hydrophytes have adapted to survive prolonged periods of anaerobic respiration and can cope with the usually toxic ethyl alcohols. This isn’t, however, an indefinite strategy.

• Submerged leaves have modified to obtain oxygen and carbon dioxide from water rather than air. The absence of a waxy coating lets dissolved gases and solids move in and out of the leaves. The surface area is increased by having either long, extremely thin leaves with smooth edges or leaves that are split into lots of small leaflets, so that they can get as much oxygen as possible.

• Aerenchyma is a soft plant tissue containing air spaces that extends throughout the plant to bring oxygen to any submerged material. It also allows the plant a back-up supply of oxygen if required; for example, at night time when plants cannot photosynthesise and produce their own oxygen and the dissolved oxygen levels in the water get used up.

• Plants may create a film of air around roots and leaves to improve gas exchange.

There are also plant adaptations that expose part of their structure above the surface of the water and aerenchyma is then used to transport oxygen to the rest of the plant. This could be in the form of water repelling leaves, roots that grow straight up out of the water like a snorkel, or porous bark that can take in more air. Some plants have such large air pockets that they become completely buoyant, giving them access to air as they float on the surface of the water.

But why do any of us gardeners need to know this?

I read a piece of advice the other day, stating that to prevent houseplants from dying you mustn’t over or under water, but keep the plant consistently moist. Don’t succumb to believing plants should all be treated the same! In fact, the biggest killer of plants in nurseries is incorrect watering, and that’s a professional environment, so don’t beat yourself up if you do kill your plants with too much (or, even I admit, too little) love.

Start with just one house plant and make sure you have a botanical name for it. Ask at your local garden centre or look online for advice pages on its cultivation requirements and stick to those – you are trying to mimic its natural habitat and a generic watering schedule for all houseplants is unlikely to do them much good. Cacti can be raised as houseplants, but require very little water, whereas a Venus flytrap is a bog plant and will happily sit in a tray of rain-water. You may even find researching your plant fascinating, so beware the hidden danger that it may be a gateway interest into full blown botany!

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS 2015 CLUB

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club met for lunch at The Links Hotel at the beginning of April, followed by a fact based and interesting talk

by Sir Michael Savory on the ‘History of the Defences of Weybourne’.

Today, this small village seems an unlikely setting for what, over the past five centuries, has been a hive of military activity in defence of this part of Britain.

The first defences were built for fear of an invasion by the Spanish Armada in 1588 when Baconsthorpe Castle became the Headquarters in support of Weybourne Fort. Much later when the railways came to North Norfolk in 1887 the route chosen had to avoid the military camps and so the station was sited about a mile from the village.

The Weybourne Springs Hotel was built near the station but, being an obvious landmark for the possibility of attack by invading German forces, was demolished in 1940. During this period the village was taken over by the army, with between three and four hundred anti-aircraft guns Cromer Times 516 April 22nd 2017

put in place, at least 30,000 men trained to use them, an estimated one and a half million shells fired but nothing ever shot down from this camp.

However Weybourne was now well and truly ‘on the map’ – even Sir Winston Churchill paid this little village two visits – and the present day visitor can catch up with some of this military history at the Muckleburgh Collection.

There have been possible sightings of Daisy in the Queensway and also Kingsway areas so we are still hopeful that she will be returned to the fold.

Please keep looking if you live in these areas and advise of any sightings.

In the last article we mentioned that kittens are often fathered by relatives of the mother cat. Many people are also not aware that kittens in the same litter may have different fathers. I was reminded of this when I received a photo from Margaret of the little kitten we re-homed with her 11 years ago.

Billy came into care with his black and white mother, 2 black and white kittens (one of each sex), plus a little black girl. They were found in an isolated barn and despite enquiries, no owner could be found. Looking at Billy it is obvious that his father was probably a pedigree cat, while his litter-mates were fathered by moggies. As an example, ginger and tortie kittens may have the same father but tabbies, black, grey or white, in the same litter, probably do not.

We were recently sad to learn that Margaret Cootes, who was one of our fosterers for several years, had died after a long illness. We originally came to know Margaret well when delivering a kitten to her from our Dereham Branch. This was before the Branch was formed in 2000. Just a few months later we had occasion to need someone to foster some motherless kittens and Margaret volunteered to take on this role. This was just the start, as many kittens then entered her home to receive lots of love and care (plus socialising with her little dog) before leaving for new homes. Not all did leave however, as Margaret and husband Ray, fell in love with two

little black kittens we called Holly and Berry, plus dear little Darcy, who arrived when only 3 days old. New owners were always made very welcome and some became good friends.

Margaret reluctantly had to retire from her role when her she started to have health problems. As well as the care the kittens received in her home we were also very grateful for the generous donation of bedding plants we received from her and Ray for our Plants Sales. These beautiful plants, easily recognised as being theirs, were soon sold.

Bodham Croquet Club wants new members to make more extensive use of its well-maintained lawn – and to promulgate the delights of this intriguing sport to the North Norfolk area. We serve an area extending from Mundesley in the East to Fakenham in the West.

If you can wield a mallet and have ever been fascinated by the strategies of snooker or chess, then this sounds like the sport for you. We play the traditional form of the sport (known as ‘Association Croquet’) but, unlike Alice (of Wonderland fame) we use wooden mallets and composite Rain does not stop play unless there is balls rather than flamingoes standing water on the lawn and hedgehogs.

Yoga on The Pier begins first Friday in May

Following on from last year’s successful Sunrise Yoga on Cromer Pier, North Norfolk District Council has announced this year’s dates.

The sessions start at 7am every Friday from 5 May until September. They last for an hour and cost £5 per person. Please bring a yoga mat. There is no need to book ahead and all abilities are welcome.

Cllr Maggie Prior, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said “There are so many reasons to join this yoga class – but to be able to stretch and exercise while watching dawn colour the sea beyond Cromer, has got to be one of the best.”

“You don’t have to know yoga to be part of this class, but you’ll soon see the benefits. Why not come along and have a go!”

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

… The annual spring clean at the Club saw dusting and vacuuming being carried out with gusto.

In the men’s changing room there were numerous bowls bags that did not seem to have any owners. Detective work which Sherlock Holmes would have been proud of, however, managed to establish some owners. Some past and some present. We now have a number of sets of bowls for sale. Anyone interested come up and see us sometime. Some items were dispatched to be recycled and extra space has been gained.

Bob was seen watering the green with a hosepipe, to assist the fertilizer on its way as, unfortunately, the water has not yet been turned on for the sprinklers by our landlords.

A check of the bar stock was needed to prepare for possible significant use on opening weekend. All the glasses now shine brightly thanks to Jackie.

Suffield Park Bowls Club Open Day

Suffield Park Bowls Club, located on Station Road off the Overstrand Road, has been closely associated with the sporting and social life of Cromer since 1935.

In 1985, a new clubhouse was completed with adequate facilities, including a bar, for the purpose of holding social activities such as meetings and wedding receptions. The club is available for hire at a reasonable fee of £12 per hour.

At this time, we are looking for new members who may be interested in joining us and enjoying a very sociable game of bowls.

On Saturday 6 May, from 10am to 4pm, we invite you to attend our Open Day and try the game for yourself. All the equipment you need to bring with you is a pair of flat soled shoes. Everything else that you need will be supplied.

Quick word of explanation as I give every year.

No idea why these club events are called Spoon Drives but they are played between members in triples. A random draw is made to show who you will play with and on which rink. You play 7 ends and keep your own score For and Against. Then a second random draw and another 7 ends and finally a further random 7 ends. The scores are totalled to give a final For and Against score and the Man and Lady with the best score are the winners!! Phew! It’s easy when you play. I am sure that the club would welcome any new bowler/visitor to join us if they wished. These games also help early season practice and exercise before league games start at the beginning of May. Oh! CMB BC originally came from Cambridge Metal Box Company although not sure the company actually exists now but the Bowls Club does.

Wednesday 3 May – 10.30am - MEMORY WALK Cromer Prom – any distance - A flat walk along the Cromer Prom for people living with dementia and their carers. Meet at the disabled pay & Display car park down on the West Prom, NR27 9HS. Parking charges apply.
