Yacht pond is given a new lease of life North Norfolk District Council pledges further investment in park Work is under way to improve the yacht pond in North Lodge Park, Cromer.

The essential work in the cliff-top park is being carried out by North Norfolk District Council, and it is expected that the £8,500 refurbishment will help to extend the pond’s life by 25 years.

The pond, which has been leaking, is being drained before being lined with glass-reinforced plastic, and the outside of the pond will be given a coating of non-toxic mineral paint.

As well as the yacht-pond work, there will be refurbishment of two of the shelters in the park – one on the old bowling green and one adjacent to the sunken garden – as well as minor repairs to the interior of the café. The men’s toilets have also been reopened recently after being damaged in an arson attack.

Cllr Judy Oliver, Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We’re really pleased to be able to help give the yacht pond a new lease of life, but this is just the start as we have further improvement work planned for the park.”

The yacht pond upgrade is expected to take a week, and the work on the shelters and the café will start soon.

Bessie’s Story – RESCUE WOODEN BOATS

The whelk boat “Bessie” was built by Johnsons at Sheringham in 1935 for G.H.Cox and Sons who were fishermen based at Wells-next-the-sea.

She is 26ft long and 10ft broad, built to the traditional double-ended design that was prevalent along the North Norfolk coast, made of larch and oak with an inboard engine with an auxiliary lugsail. She was named after George Henry Cox’s wife, Bessie and was used in the fishing industry for many years, as a busy whelk boat. Later, when the Cox family acquired three Liverpool-type ex-lifeboats she was retained as a reserve vessel. She was well regarded by the family and considered a fine sea boat.

In 1940, Bessie was taken to Ramsgate to help in Operation Dynamo to help evacuate the British Expedionary Forces from Dunkirk. She was, however, chosen for a special sub-mission. She crossed the English Channel and had to lay off the French coast in a vulnerable position.

When Michael Graham applied for the 1939-45 STAR medal he named the following people who took part in the Operation alongside him under Captain Selby as: T. Neilson, W R. Cox, W. Long, H. Albrow, R. Pegg, J. Bishop, J. Barnes and C. Warton Later Bessie was sold to ‘Squeakie’ Bishop of Blakeney who used her there for commercial pleasure trips. Later still, she worked out of Gorleston in the same job and was finally acquired by the Charity, Rescue Wooden Boats from Trevor Farman in late 2011. She has since had the wheelhouse removed and some major repairs to her stem post completed but is presently in urgent need of a major overhaul to return her to pristine condition. (Research by Geraldine Green) We have just - in 2017 - started fund-raising to restore Bessie. She is in dire need, especially after Storm Doris recently necessitated her being hauled out of the water at Morston.

SPECIAL EVEnTS Essential Survival Guide for Parents of Teenagers Are you the parent or carer of a young person? Would you like more information and knowledge on the issues affecting young people in today’s world? Would you like to meet and share information with other parents and carers? If so, come along to this series of talks for parents of teenagers and young people which aims to increase knowledge, information and support. The talks are a joint initiative by the Early Help Hub, who offer early support to children, young people and their families, and Cromer Library. The second talk in this series will focus on Managing Difficult Behaviour lead by Nina Newson (Positive Behaviour Youth Support Worker, Leeway). The talk will take place on Monday 24 pm April between 5.30 and 7pm. Talks are free and tea/coffee are provided. Donations welcomed. Ham Hock Terrine

Our homemade ham hock terrine is an old favourite that regularly appears on the evening menus and is a traditional dish that is simple but satisfying. It is one of our head chef, Matt Staceys’, favourite starters as it is a classic rustic dish which is best served with just some crusty bread and some piccalilli. 1. Take a large saucepan and fill with the ham hocks, bay leaves, onion, carrots, peppercorns and garlic. Cover with water and bring to the boil. Once the water is boiling reduce to a simmer and leave to cook all day for roughly 5 hours. 2. After about 5 hours, when the meat is falling off the bone, Strain the pan off in a colander. When the ham is cool enough to handle, pick out the ham and pick off the bone. 3. Place the cooked ham in a mixing bowl and add the parsley, herbs and vinaigrette. Mix this all together with your hands. Set aside a baking tin lined with cling film and put the ham hock mixture in and press down firmly with hands. 4. Cover with cling film and find something to place on top of the tin to weight it down. A tin for example. Leave for 24 hours to set. 5. Check the next day and will be ready to serve. Should be nice and compact. To remove from tin, turn upside and tap on side and lift and the terrine should slide out. 6. Ideal to serve with a crusty bread rolls & piccalilli.

WHITE BREAD ROLLS - Makes 8 250g strong bread flour 10g fresh yeast 150ml warm water 30g salt 1. Add flour to a large mixing bowl and make a well.

3. Once you have added 01263 the water and yeast solution, bring it all together. As you are bringing it together, add the salt. 4. Leave the 01263 dough to prove in a warm place for around an hour or until it has doubled in size. 5. Once 01263 it has doubled in size, knock the dough back and then allow to rest for a few moments.

6. Once it has rested, cut into 40g pieces. When the pieces of dough have been cut, roll them out and make sure that there is a little knot at the bottom and place on a lightly greased baking tray to do a final prove. 7. Make a bain marie to place on a rack underneath the bread by half filling a roasting tray with water.

Then place the rolls into the oven on a rack above the bain marie and bake at 200c until golden brown.

All change on the Bittern Line

It’s “all change” on the Bittern Line, one of the great successes of north norfolk.

At a very well attended AGM of the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership, held at Paston Sixth Form College in North Walsham, on 28 February, Ted Gadsden formally retired after 10 years as chair. Jonathan Jonathan Denby presents a Denby, head of corporate affairs at retirement gift to Ted Gadsden, Greater Anglia, and Ian Dinmore, out-going chair of the Bittern chair of Community Rail Norfolk, Line CRP were present to mark the occasion.

Jonathan thanked Mr Gadsden for “his constant and unwavering support for the Bittern Line CRP over the last decade.” The CRP was created in 1997 and over those 20 years passenger journeys have tripled. “This is down to the commitment of many people who have played their part, in the CRP and more widely. One of the key players in the last 10 years has been Ted. He’s been a tireless supporter and advocate for line.”

Ted was presented with a gift voucher by Mr Denby, on behalf of the Partnership, for him and his wife Sheila to enjoy a day out on one of NENTA’s excursion trains.

Mr Gadsden intends to continue his involvement as a “community railer” supporting the Bittern Line, as Vice President, and Community Rail Norfolk, the body which oversees this work on the lines from Norwich to Sheringham, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Ted is succeeded as chair of the BLP by Peter Mayne, who is active in community rail as a director of Community Rail Norfolk. In 2011 he was instrumental in the Bittern Line winning the prestigious “Passengers Matter" award made by the national rail body, ACORP. He retired in 2012 as principal of Paston Sixth Form College, although he continues to support improvement in schools nationally, doing so - you’ve guessed it - by rail as his preferred mode of travel.

North Norfolk Chorale to perform for Holy Week

Family Disputes after death: Where there’s a Will

Coping with the grief and bereavement of losing a loved one is one of life's biggest challenges. Going through this process after a family member or friend has died is never easy, but matters can become even more difficult and emotive if there is an issue or dispute with the Will or Estate.

You may feel unfairly treated by the contents of a loved one's will or feel the deceased has failed to make adequate financial provision for those left behind. Alternatively, you may have had doubts about the mental capacity of the person signing the will or feel they were pressured into signing it by someone else. Our modern, complex families are causing some issues too. For example, what if a person re-marries and leaves their estate to their new spouse and child from that relationship, but not the children from their

first marriage? This can result in you wanting to contest a will (this process is also referred to as contested or contentious probate).

Contentious probate is on the rise, with the number of Will disputes now at record levels.

All too commonly, people find themselves embroiled in a family war over the contents of a loved one’s Will. Furthermore, with our growing elderly population and approximately 850,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK, increasing numbers of elderly people are vulnerable to financial abuse.

Clapham & Collinge are holding a series of legal briefings throughout March and April to examine many of the issues surrounding Wills, Probate and the administration of estates, and how and by whom they can be challenged. The briefing will highlight several of the most com-

Songbird Survival Supporter Mina

Songbird Survival funds research into the dramatic decline in songbird numbers.

Supporter Eddie Bullimore blames the decline on modern farming methods including the use of chemicals, not leaving margins around fields and the severe cutting back of hedgerows with mechanical cutters, along with the rising number of predators.

Eddie and his friend Lynn Frarey are always grateful for the support given to them through donations of cash and items for their various fundraising table top sales by members of the public, but were particularly pleased recently to learn of a very young supporter.

Six year old Mina Fawkes has been putting her pocket money into a Songbird Survival charity box in Cromer and Eddie is delighted about Mina’s interest in the songbirds and their future. Well done Mina!

Pupils from Belfry Primary in Overstrand visit Cromer War Memorial to commemorate local soldiers who fell in the Second Battle of Gaza Pupils from Belfry Primary School attended Cromer War Memorial on Friday 10 March to lay a wreath to commemorate local soldiers who fell in the Battle of Gaza in April 1917.

Fifty pupils from the school have been researching soldiers from Overstrand and across North Norfolk with local military historian Neil Storey and Tim Bennet, author of Overstrand in the Great War. Pupils have been learning about the roots and fates of local soldiers as well as learning about conditions on the frontline and how life was changed back at home by examining costumes, objects and written accounts.

The students created a roll of honour for 367 men from the 4th and 5th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment who died on 19 April 1917 in the second Battle of Gaza. This will form part of an exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gaza.

Sarah Power, Events & Learning Manager at The Forum, Norwich, said: “This project has been particularly poignant for the young people as 17 former Belfry boys lost their lives in the

First World War. The children have learned these are not just names, they are local people who grew up in the area 100 years ago. This project is teaching the pupils about the local soldiers who fought in The Battle of Gaza, their families, and what a remarkable generation they were.”

The Forum’s project shares the stories of our local heroes - both men and women – so their names, life experiences and sacrifices are acknowledged and remembered by new generations.

The project commemorates the lives of the fallen and those who returned back home via dedicated school and learning programmes, adult volunteer-led projects, public talks, events and exhibitions.

In total over 170 entries were received from across England for the competition, which celebrates Cromer’s New Year’s Day celebrations – which this year took place on January 8th due to bad weather.

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY

Many gardeners are aware that to take full advantage of the opportunities our gardens have to offer we need to make sure that they give pleasure all year round. Two speakers at recent meetings have given members plenty of advice on how we might achieve this.

Trevor Harrison from South Creake Nursery explained how it is possible to have colour in the garden in winter. Hellebores are a popular and reliable plant for gardens. Most like semishade and, ideally, moist conditions in order to thrive but generally they do not need much attention. Varieties such as “Penny’s Pink” and “Molly’s White” have mottled leaves and will flower through to April. “Phoebe” and “Lily” are double varieties, “Sparkle” has long stems and many flowers and “Pirouette” has very

dark, almost black flowers. Most hellebores do not set seed but clumps can be split after a few years. October/November is the best time to do this. Snowdrops and aconites are very reliable winter arrivals, some pulmonarias are ideal for shady and moist situations while some daphnes prefer poor soils. There are winter varieties of honeysuckle, viburnums, witch hazel and mahonia as well so as you see there is plenty to choose from to provide winter colour. Anyone who thought that winter was a rather bland time of year for gardeners came away from the meeting knowing otherwise.

Jane Lister from Hoecroft Plants near Wood Norton specialises in growing grasses and coloured foliage plants. Apart from some herbaceous plants the show gardens at the

nursery have few flowering plants so blooms are at a premium. This does not stop the gardens from looking spectacular. Colour, shape and form are key to successful planting. Grasses provide a sense of movement that many other plants cannot. Contrasting colours and leaf shapes help give all year round interest. The nursery has been going for 25 years but this is the last year that Jane Lister will be running what is a marvellous resource for gardeners.

If you have the opportunity of visiting the gardens then please do. You will not come away disappointed.

Shelagh Ashe’s talk is called ‘Mind the Gap’.

Plaques Unveiling

Town and District Councillors, together with society members and guests, gathered on the morning of Saturday 25 February for the unveiling of the three news plaques which have been added to those already in place in Cromer.

It was part of the continuing programme to recognise those from the town who had made significant achievements in life and whose name drew people to the town. Events got under way with journalist Keith Skipper unveiling the plaque to theatre critic and travel journalist Clement Scott, on the front of the Hotel de Paris.

Scott’s writings on the area, which he christened “Poppyland”, had a tremendous influence on the number of visitors towards the end of the 19th century.

The second plaque, on the wall of 4, Brunswick Terrace, marks where Edward Bach, a London doctor, was living when he developed his ‘Flower’ and ‘Rescue’ remedies, which continue to be in use in homeopathy.

His name draws visitors from around the world to visit to Cromer.

The third plaque recalls Priscilla Buxton, who as a young woman was “the right hand” of her father Thomas Fowell Buxton, as he fought for the 1834 Act which abolished slavery in the British colonies. Married on the day the Act came into force, she continued the fight against the transAtlantic slave trade in partnership with her husband Andrew Johnston. Cindy, Tim and Nicola Buxton, six generations on, were present to unveil the plaque for this tireless Cromer-based campaigner.

In 2001, a local history evening attracted a full church and lots of interest. Since then further pictures have been added to our collection.

It is hoped that enough material can be amassed for a power-point presentation using the church’s new cinema screen, maybe in the autumn. If anyone has Thorpe Market connections and access to family pictures we would be thrilled to make contact. Nowadays there is no need to be separated from precious photographs, they can be copied in their owners’ homes.

Our photos are from Anthony Beck’s Green Farm archive and are just the sort of anecdotal village history that we are seeking. Of course Thorpe Market was a ‘Suffield’ village, with many people employed on the Gunton estate.

Photographic material from that era, to add to that which we already hold, would be most welcome.

Memories of the Methodist Chapel, Post Office, The Dairy, 1947 winter, Sunday School, Coronation, WW2 all make fascinating stories to be shared.

2015 New Cromer medical centre takes major step forward

Land sale completed between north norfolk District Council and Medcentres

The sale of land to allow a new £3.5m medical centre to be built in Cromer has been completed.

The deal between North Norfolk District Council and Medcentres involving land on Mill Road in Cromer, at the entrance to Cabbell Park, was formally completed on Friday 10 March.

The building of the medical centre, which will feature a GP surgery and pharmacy, can now move forwards and is expected to take between 12 and 15 months to complete. It will include more than 60 car parking spaces, with more than half dedicated to patients. Full planning permission was granted last summer.

The centre will share the Mill Road site with Cromer Football Club and form part of a community healthcare hub with nearby Cromer Hospital. The football club’s pitch was moved westwards at the end of last year and improvements made including refurbished team changing rooms and a new match officials’ changing facility.

District Council, said “The land sale is one of the last pieces in the jigsaw which will see a much needed medical centre built in Cromer.

“It is a pleasure to see this scheme come to fruition after so much hard work over the last three years.”

Cllr John Lee, ward member for Suffield Park, said “Now the land sale is completed I fervently hope we can finally provide a home to Cromer Youth Football Club.”

Cllr Nigel Pearce, ward member for Suffield Park, said “It is great news the project can now move forward hopefully with increased motivation and purpose to provide the future medical care Cromer's growing population will need.”

As previously agreed

by the Council's Cabinet the capital receipt generated from the sale of the land will be ring fenced as a contribution to a new sports facility for the town.

Officers at North Norfolk District Council continue to discuss potential options for this facility with landowners and hope to report to Cabinet on this matter in the summer.

by Cosmo the Clown, who told us of his career with the Foolhardy Circus troupe. This is the second time Cosmo has regaled us with his stories and a thoroughly good time was had by all.

He brought with him various costumes that they wear and a pair of his clown boots were passed around - they were very heavy and we were told how he walked about with weights tied to his ankles so he could get used to doing all the acrobatic stunts wearing the boots. We were 22

Although animals are not seen in the circus these days, Cosmo told us of his near miss with a tiger in Bangkok. The troupe is getting ready for their touring season and next month they will be at Wroxham Barns. Well worth going to see.

Big Society Fund latest round agreed Big Society Fund approaches £1.5m total grant funding awarded

A heritage group, disabled people, film fans and users of several village halls across North Norfolk will all benefit from the latest round of grants from the Big Society Fund, run by North Norfolk District Council.

Eleven grants totalling more than £80,000 were made in the latest round agreed this month. This means 183 BSF grants have been awarded totalling £1,439,526.87 since the fund started in 2012.

Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Panel, said “Later this month we will be celebrating a wide range of volunteers at the Big Society Awards Night at Sheringham Little Theatre.

“It is appropriate timing, shortly before we celebrate the efforts of those hard working volunteers, to announce the next tranche of help we are able to give to groups of people working in their communities to improve the lives of so many people.”

Langham Parish Room (£3,850) for the refurbishment of the male toilets.

The Raynhams and Helhoughton Village Hall (£9,882) to refurbish toilets and kitchen.

Felmingham Village Hall (£14,000) to help refurbish the village hall to include a redesigned interior to incorporate a community meeting space with lounge and mini kitchen, to remove damp, replace boiler and improved insulation, replace existing patched roof and purchase a projector for film shows.

Overstrand Parish Council (£6,700) to refurbish the parish hall kitchen; replacement of old kitchen units, worktops, sink, taps and water heater.

• Felbeck Trust at Sustead (£3,576) to purchase tools, fencing and associated equipment to restore and improve the habitat of the combined Sustead Common and Surveyor's Allotment site.

• Swanton Novers Parish Council (£7,000) to purchase two pieces of adult fitness equipment and associated costs.

• North Walsham Rifle and Pistol Club (£15,000) to go towards a larger project involving a Sport England grant to replace the aging clubhouse.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

HELP! Daisy, one of the young cats, recently re-homed by us, is missing. This little short haired black cat has escaped from her new home in the Queensway area of North Walsham. If you see a new cat in your area that fits this description, please contact us. We would love to get her back and can lend a trap to catch her if necessary as she is very nervous so may not let you approach her.

Fortunately she is chipped so easy to identify if successfully caught.

We have recently been helping with the neutering cats at a local business site in North Walsham, with invaluable help in the catching being done by a gentleman working there. To date, three of these young cats have been caught and neutered. The last two caught have now left the site and are enjoying life at local stables where they have shelter and regular meals provided by the owner. Before continuing to catch the cats, plans were made to provide shelter for those left at the site and this did hold up the catching for a time. With somewhere safe to place the cats when they return from the vets, neutering them will now continue. All the vets we use for this type of work are very helpful and will hold cats overnight if necessary.

In the meantime, we had a call from our friend at the site advising that he had seen a young kitten there. With no mother or litter mates around we advised him to catch it, if possible, and we would take it into care. Early the next morning, I received a call from our friend to let us know he had caught the kitten and, after advising Stephanie, I went to collect it and take it to Dilham. As soon as we looked at the kitten, we saw it had a problem as it had a large lump of poo stuck to his bottom and, as he was long haired, this would

be difficult to remove. With an appointment to take another cat to the vets that morning Stephanie rang to see if they could see him too. As they were holding a nurses clinic that morning, they were happy to oblige and this little lad was left there to receive professional care. Poor little lad, he was returned later that day with a very sore ulcerated bottom, and was given Manuka Honey and Vaseline to make him more comfortable and antibiotics to help his recovery. Irene, one of our fosterers, was happy to take him under her wing and, one week later, he returned to see his vet who not only gave him a clean bill of health but also, subject to a satisfactory blood test when he is vaccinated at 9 weeks old, will be giving him a new home. A happy ending for this little kitten we called ‘Manuka’. Our friend at the site has been keeping an eye out but no further kittens have been seen.

Flying high at Toll Barn Vets

As a veterinary practice offering specialised care for pets including exotic animals we regularly get visitors of all shapes and sizes and this month has been a “soaring success” for our feathery friends!

In addition to our more usual visitors such as a Siberian Eagle Owl who required surgery for pododermatitis (infection of the feet), a feather plucking parrot and a parrot requiringendoscopy for respiratory infection, we also teamed up with Phoenix Bird Of Prey Rescue, a charity focusing on the rescue, rehabilitation and release of wild birds of prey. This months wildlife casualties included a Barn Owl who had flown into a wire, and a kestrel who had been hit by a car.

Both casualties underwent x-rays in our Diagnostic Imaging Suite which showed the Barn Owl had fractured his humerus (the bone between the shoulder and elbow) whilst the Kestrel had luckily escaped without any fractures, although examination showed signs of concussion. When caring for wildlife our main concern is always to enable them to return successfully to the wild whenever possible. With this in mind we operated using micro-surgical equipment to repair the fracture of the humerus. It was essential to achieve perfect alignment as a key aspect of Barn Owl flight involves hovering and this requires perfect wing function. The Barn Owl continued his rehabilitation with physiotherapy and medication with

Following several weeks of rehabilitation we re-examined the Kestrel to ensure all signs of concussion had resolved and there was no lasting eye damage, as this would affect his hunting ability. Thankfully there were no signs of remaining damage and the Kestrel was declared healthy for release.

As he was found just yards from our surgery, our team assisted in his release within the Toll Barn Vets grounds. It was a truly wonderful sight to see him souring back to the wild. It is a privilege to be able to extend our skills caring for exotic pets to caring for and preserving our wildlife and we are grateful to charities such as Phoenix Rescue for their continued support and skill in the rehabilitation and release of wildlife.

Phoenix Rescue and came back to visit us after two weeks when we re-xrayed his wing to assess the extent of the healing. We were delighted to see that the fracture had healed perfectly and his wing alignment was excellent, so we were able to remove the pin placed at the time of fracture repair. He has now returned to Phoenix Rescue and will complete his rehabilitation and be released back into the wild.

For the third year running, Ann Lown has raised money amongst her family and friends for the Cromer-based charity About with Friends.

Ann - ably assisted by husband Ann Lown hands over the pot of money to AwF members Malcolm - uses her facebook page to run a photo competition for facebook friends to play. In the past this has included mystery places (Where the Dowst?), mystery objects (What the Dowst?) and last year Who the Dowst? - carefully disguised photos of celebrities. Each time an answer is guessed correctly, Ann puts a pound in her pot and she asks the guesser to do the same.

Dear Margaret,

I would very much like to ask your readers aged 60 plus if they remember a toy shop in Church Street, Cromer opposite the church.

We are talking 1959-62. I was 10 in 1962 and spent my pocket money in this shop every year and was taken by the massive display of Dinky toys in glass-fronted display cabinets.

I have asked around and even entered one shop I was convinced was the toy shop but to no avail - somebody out there must remember something!

I think one had to go to the first floor for toys but may be mistaken as tempus fugit has had an effect on my senses! When one is 10 years old, everything looks a lot bigger than 55 years later, so perhaps the ground floor was actually the toy-shop.

To add to this I would like to pass on a message to Janice, who was about 10 years old in 1962 and whose parents ran or owned a hotel in Cromer (the correct girl will remember which hotel so I won`t mention the name). My father took a photograph of her with my sister and me on the swings behind the car park on what is now the one-way system black-and-white of course - perhaps she would like a copy.

In the past the Lowns have bought a pair of digital cameras for the Ann Lown and AwF members with some of the prints that will decorating charity and a projector and large format screen so they can show the new unit movies at their base. Now that 2016’s money has been collected, Ann dropped by to hand over a cheque for £603. The money is to be used towards decorating and kitting out their new unit for members who need a little extra support. This building will include a games room, sensory room, chill-out zone and kitchen area. Some of the money has already been used to buy some lovely canvas prints of the bespoke members.
