Local dignitaries came together with the Cromer community, for the dedication service of the East of England Co-op Funeral Services’ Chapel of Rest on Garden Hall Road on Wednesday 25 January.

Local Councillor David Pritchard officially opened the branch with sincere words, whilst the dedication was led by Reverend Jennie Hodgkinson, Assistant Minister at Cromer Parish Church with St Martin’s.

Other guests included local care home managers, hospices, representatives from charities, neighbours and members of the funeral profession. Visitors took the opportunity to talk to the local funeral team over tea and cake at the warm and welcoming premises. They were also able to chat with the bereavement support counsellors and meet the civil celebrant.

Mary Wilson, Funeral Arranger and Branch Manager said “It was fantastic to see so many faces at the dedication service. Since we opened our doors, the community has been nothing but welcoming.

We are proud to provide a service to the local community in its time of need.”

If you were unable to make it to the open day, the Cromer funeral branch operates an ‘open door’ policy. Everyone is welcome to call in for expert advice on funeral arrangements, guidance on monumental masonry, bereavement support, pre-paid funeral plans – or a quick hello.

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

At our Annual General Meeting in January, our Chairperson elect retired after serving her terms of office.

A new Chairperson was elected together with the President and a full Committee.

After the AGM we had a speaker who gave an interesting slide show of Old Cromer followed by a buffet provided by members.

Our Programme Secretary has organised a full programme of demonstrations for the year and it promises to be an interesting one.

Nine Paston Sixth Form College students, a record for the College, received a very special New Year’s present when they learned that they had won places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities for September 2017.

The nine had to demonstrate outstanding academic ability in their GCSE and AS results and in their predicted A level grades. These, together with their personal statement and College reference, got them an interview. Winning a place was down to their own performance in the highly competitive interviews. They clearly were successful in convincing interviewers of their academic credentials and potential. Being part of the College A+ and Oxbridge Programmes run by Katharine Day supported the students in their ambition to aim for the very top. The scheme has been very successful, increasing the numbers each year aiming for Oxbridge or the top Russell Group Universities. In the summer, 24% of all Paston students going on to University went on to the Russell Group. Each year, James Keeler, an ex

Paston student who is the Senior Admissions Tutor at Selwyn College, Cambridge, visits Paston to talk to parents and students about life at Oxbridge and how to apply and be successful. A number of ex Paston students who are currently studying at Oxford or

• Florrie Crass - to read English and French at Christ Church College Oxford. Florrie studied at Aylsham High School.

Cambridge also return to support and mentor students. Paston students also obtain information from the College’s Futures Event when Oxford and Cambridge attend, along with over 30 other Universities, to encourage students to apply. Council calls on ‘Absent Voters’ to refresh their signatures

- Keep your right to a vote -

More than 2,500 people defined as ‘long-term absent voters’ will receive letters from North Norfolk District Council asking them to return a form showing their fresh signature.

The letters have been sent out to postal voters and anyone who has a postal proxy vote, whose signatures have been held for more than five years and not updated in that time. Anyone in this category who wants to remain an ‘absent voter’ will need to send in a new signature.

Returning the completed form by 2 March will ensure absent voters remain eligible to vote by post in future elections. If the deadline of 2 March is missed, their right to an absent vote will be removed and they will be required to complete a new absent voter application form if they wish to vote by post in the future.

Take your Cue to Support Seaside Theatre

It takes more than acting and creative talent to keep a community theatre in the spotlight – it also requires funding.

And Sheringham Little Theatre is appealing for more business sponsors to support its work staging of the performing arts.

The venue generates income from a widening programme of events – from drama and music to cinema and live arts screenings – as well as its popular Hub coffee bar. But it also relies on support from the community it serves, including businesses, groups and individuals.

The Little Theatre is stepping up its drive to find more sponsors – including seeking its first ever “gold” backer.

Sponsorship can be for a full year with packages ranging from bronze (£695 a year plus VAT), through silver (£1250) to gold (£4950). But it can also include individual events or seasons, such as summer drama and pantomime, with backers gaining publicity through programme and in-venue advertising.

During the recent pantomime season, sponsors dropped in to meet the cast during rehearsals and after shows. And they spoke of how backing the popular theatre also provided the businesses with a stage for entertaining and informing existing and potential clients.

We’ve finally come out of our winter hibernation and, complete with a lick of paint and various other refurbishments, re-opened for business at the end of January. Our first big occasion was Burn’s Night, complete with authentic Scottish piper, who was excellent but rather loud. Coastal Community Funding Boost for Sheringham and Blakeney are great locations. North Norfolk Blakeney Welcomed

Two bids supported by North Norfolk District Council to fund ‘Coastal Community Teams’ have been given the green light by Government.

The successful bids for Sheringham and Blakeney Channel will receive £10,000 each from Government and become part of a nationwide network of Coastal Community Teams.

The announcement brings the total number of Coastal Community Teams to four in North Norfolk. Back in 2015 CCT funding was approved for Wells-next-the-Sea and the ‘Deep History Coast’ (Weybourne to Cart Gap – centred on Cromer).

The bid for Blakeney is a consortium of local organisations primarily concerned with addressing the navigation of the Channel.

The Sheringham bid is for a wide range of community organisations to work together to develop innovative ways of maintaining the vitality of the town centre.

In Sheringham, the money for the Coastal Community Team will be used to develop ideas to help keep the town centre and the seafront vibrant and attractive, for example by exploring options for improving lighting on the promenade and possible measures to better accommodate pedestrians in the town centre.

The Sheringham Coastal Community Team will involve Sheringham Town Council,

Sheringham Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Norfolk County Council.

In Blakeney the grant will be used to develop a plan for the management of the marine waters inland of Blakeney Point. The first stage of the project will be to develop an Economic Plan, which has to be submitted to the Department by 31 March.

The Blakeney team is keen to involve stakeholders and other interested parties of the local community in this project. The Team membership and structure is currently being developed, with an initial public meeting planned for 21 February in order to communicate the objectives of the project and to invite comments and volunteers.

The Team plans to communicate further details of this project once the membership of the Team has been formed and following feedback from the community.

The Coastal Community Team initiative is to provide a catalyst for local people to get together to address the needs of their areas and help improve local economic prospects. North Norfolk District Council is happy to support these new teams, to provide help and advice and further assistance in applying for further funding to help put the ideas into action.

Our 24 January meeting welcomed our good friend Maggie Roffe to tell us about Julian of Norwich who lived in the 14th Century in Norwich as an English Anchoress, a Christian mystic.

She actually lived in the Julian Church and she was the first English woman to write and publish a book in the 14th century.

We know so little about her but believe she was 30 years old when she came to live in the cell attached to the Church. Her book was entitled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Revelations of Divine Loveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and it is known all over the world. Her writings gave hope and trust in God's goodness. At that time Norwich had many plagues and there were so many poor and sick people and it is believed that Julian of Norwich would give counsel to the many people who came to her little window - advice, prayer and hope.

Maggie gave us such an interesting evening and this subject is very close to her heart

What does a solicitor do?

This article follows on from my last article on how to become a lawyer.

The next step is to explain the work that a solicitor does.

A solicitor is a confidential legal adviser who combines legal expertise and people-skills to provide expert legal advice and assistance in range of situations.

Our work covers the following:

Everyday matters for private clients, such as buying and selling a house, making a Will and winding up people’s affairs when they have died. It also covers advice when relationships break-down and other family matters.

Helping with the legal side of business and its transactions.

Protecting people, by advising them on their rights and making sure that they are treated fairly. This includes bringing and enforcing claims through the Courts and tribunals.

Of the 130,000 solicitors in England and Wales, two-thirds work in private practice. Scotland has its own legal system. They range from sole practitioners (who work on their own with support staff) through to multi-national firms with hundreds of partners, thousands of staff and offices across the world.

Some solicitors work with individual people; including representing them in the Courts and tribunals. Or, they might work advising businesses and corporate clients in areas ranging from employment law to contracts, through to company mergers and acquisitions. In counties such as Norfolk, there are thriving practices specialising in advising farmers on all aspects of agricultural legal matters.

Other work is in specialist areas: insurance, intellectual property (“I.P.”) i.e. advising on patents and copyrights, shipping, banking, the media and entertainment.

The remaining third of solicitors work ‘in house’ in commerce and industry, local and central government, the Courts, the Armed Forces and Charities.

Solicitors are employed at all levels of seniority. A solicitor in private practice may well become a partner, i.e. a proprietor who owns a share in and runs their own business. This means that they take a share in profits but also take the risk of market-forces and fluctuating success, just like any other business.

Tick and Tock clock in with young raffle winners

Two young panto fans are all smiles after winning a pair of puppet stars from Sheringham’s fun festive show.

Brother and sister Harrison and Eva Peck from Sheringham enjoyed visiting the show at the Little Theatre – really getting into the spirit by dressing up as characters Captain Hook and Wendy.

Now the icing on their cake has been to win crocodile puppets Tick and Tock - who terrorized Captain Hook in the successful show - in an end-of-season raffle, which also raised funds for the community theatre.

Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “I couldn’t be more delighted that Tick and Tock have found such a perfect home with a young family of Peter Pan fans.”

The £500 raised from the raffle will go toward the theatre’s ‘Little Bit Bigger’ campaign to build an extension on a flat roof to make a flexible space for young people using the venue.

Public drop-in session success at Mundesley

Hundreds of people attended the Mundesley Coast Management Scheme public drop-in session and exhibition at at Coronation Hall in Mundesley on Tuesday 17 January from 2pm to 7.30pm.

An outline business case for Mundesley Coast Management Scheme is being developed to help attract funding and gain approval for the work.

It is expected that the final scheme will cost between £1 million and £1.5 million pounds.

The public drop-in session helped to explain what options have been shortlisted for further consideration for the scheme and what the next steps will be. The event explained the need for the scheme, what is and isn’t possible; helped raise awareness of how coastal management schemes are funded and what the next steps are, and enabled people to give feedback on the shortlisted options.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for the Coastal Management and Environmental Services at North Norfolk District Council said “I would like to thank people for attending in the numbers they did.

All the information from the day is now on our website and we will be contacting people shortly to keep them updated.”

“We spend around £310,000 every year to maintain 21 miles of coastline that’s £14,700 a mile. On top of this defences do require more substantial investment and in order to do this we have put an additional £300,000 of district council funding towards this scheme to help secure further government funds.”

APPOINTMENT OF MUSICAL DIRECTOR

The Committee of Iceni Choir is looking to appoint a new MD. The Choir is a full SATB choir with a membership of around 40 men and women drawn principally from mid-Norfolk.

The choir rehearses in Reepham for two hours each Wednesday evening and performs about four concerts a year. The Choir’s repertoire is broad and varied, from ‘Bach to Broadway’. The choir has the services of a professional accompanist. The role is remunerated for time and expenses, plus the prospect of an annual bonus based on the financial outcome of the year.

Inspectors praise Cromer school's family atmosphere

School inspectors have given Cromer's high school a glowing report, praising the school's family atmosphere and high standards.

Ofsted gave Cromer Academy the top Outstanding ranking in Principal Dr Geoff Baker two of four areas - the school's leadership and pupils' development and welfare - with an overall ranking of Good.

The top scores come hot on the heels of last summer's record GCSE results, which were the Academy's highest since opening in 2011.

A team of four inspectors visited the school in December, spending time in 40 lessons and meeting up with students, parents, and staff.

Their detailed report praises Principal Dr Geoff Baker's "inspirational leadership" and quotes repeatedly from parents supporting the school's

"transformational" senior team.

One parent is quoted as saying "The teachers really will go the extra mile because they know and care about each and every child."

The report says that pupils and parents are a "powerful force for change in the school", with the student council making a real difference to Academy life.

It says pupils "are rightly proud of their school, work hard and are courteous, tolerant and respectful to adults and each other" and that "parents, almost universally, hold the school in the highest regard."

Inspectors said the academy's curriculum is well-planned and effective, with high expectations a "hallmark of good teaching".

They noted that GCSE grades continue to increase and are above the national average, with almost twice as many pupils achieving the English Baccalaureate - the Government's measure of a broad mix of subjects - in 2016 than in the previous year.

Rock Bodham has announced details of its 2017 event, and is now looking for bands to play at, what has become, one of north Norfolk’s biggest live music events. The charity event, which has raised in the region of £15,000 over its 5 years, will be taking place on Saturday 22 July on Bodham Playing Field, and on Sunday 23 July at Bodham’s Red Hart pub.

The event recently made its latest round of donations to local charities,

Principal Dr Baker said "This is a tremendous and powerful report that really captures everything that we have been working for at Cromer Academy.

"We have a remarkable community of students, parents, and staff that work hard together to make every single child feel comfortable and to bring out the best in them. It is absolutely fitting that Ofsted have recognised the family feel of the school, as from everything from our exam results to our sports teams and our school productions, we work to support each other, just like a family. I couldn't be prouder."

Record Breaking Christmas Cracker of a Show

The 2016 Cromer Christmas Show saw yet another increase in audience numbers up by 5.19% on 2015 to 13,456, including 1,444 Family tickets.

The highly acclaimed show also sold out of programmes with the last few going on the last night of the run creating another Christmas record in sales by selling exactly 1000 programmes.

And for those who love there facts and figures here’s a few more to amuse and delight : 986 mince pies sold, 2,658 ice creams and in Tides, Christmas diners pulled 198 crackers!

Sheringham Shoal helps About with Friends become ‘green'

A small group of supporters, trustees and members of the Cromer-based organisation, About with Friends, gathered with representatives of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm at its operational base on 24 January, to witness the ‘Grand Switch On' of a new lighting system.

The replacement of old fluorescent tubing with modern, long-lasting LED tubes was made possible by a £5,000 grant from the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund.

Responding to thanks from Helen Dalton-Hare, founder and CEO of About with Friends, Ross McMillan, Head of Operations at Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm said "The company set up its Community Fund in 2010 to help North Norfolk community groups finance projects that focus on renewable energy, marine environment and safety, sustainability or education in these areas. The About with Friends project to install LED lighting fell neatly within these parameters, and the Fund panel was very pleased to be able to play a part in the successful changeover."

The speeches were followed by canapés served by members of ‘About with Friends'.

Francis moved to London in the late eighties. Much of his early career was spent with Hilton in a variety of locations including Portsmouth to Glasgow.

Francis moved to East Anglia to take up his first General Manager’s role at The Swan in Lavenham and has not left the area since.

He spent a decade working with Adnams, overseeing The Swan and Crown Hotels in Southwold in addition to The Victoria at Holkham and Globe in Wells under an Adnams management contract, before taking on board the challenges of his own business under Adnams at the White Horse in Blakeney.

A role at another of East Anglia’s iconic businesses followed at Wyken Vineyards where Francis spent the next three years as General Manager of the Leaping Hare, before joining the team at Cromer Pier.

Commenting on the report of the Cromer Christmas Show he said “It is a fantastic way to start a new role, although I must admit I was not in post so the record breaking year is down to my staff”.

He continued, “I am both delighted and excited to have joined the team at Cromer Pier in this, a very special year for the Cromer Pier Show as it celebrates its fortieth year. And with the new North Norfolk District Council 60’s Extravaganza to look forward to, there could be no better time to be working on one of North Norfolk’s most historic and iconic landmarks”

He added “I believe that the ’60s event will become a firm favourite with locals and visitors to North Norfolk and will establish itself as a must go to weekend in Cromer. I see plenty of opportunities to develop a business as diverse as Cromer Pier - it is,after all, a jewel in the North Norfolk Crown and already showcases much of what is best about the area”.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We have mentioned the actions people need to take when they see a stray cat in their garden to ensure they are not stealing someone’s beloved companion. However, after taking appropriate action, there are some that are indeed strays and need to come into care. It may be that we cannot take them into care straight away because all our pens are full so we will ask the person who has contacted us to ensure the cat is fed and has shelter until we are in a position to do so.

Because we do not have any background information on the cat once we have space to take it in, we will get our vets to blood test for FIV and FELV. If this provides a positive result, further investigations are made at specialist centres to confirm the diagnosis. Fortunately, the result from these will often come back negative. However, if the result is positive, we can only rehome cats with FIV to indoor homes, either by themselves, or with other FIV cats. Unfortunately, if the cat is FELV positive, it will need to be put to sleep, something we have rarely needed to do. Last year 3 cats tested positive for FIV but none for FELV.

Two of the cats, both ginger boys, quickly found new homes with people who wanted indoor cats because they lived on busy roads. Garfie, the second of these to arrive, came into care with other cats. When his blood tests indicated he was FIV positive, the other cats were also tested but their tests proved negative.

Herard, the last to arrive, was a stray and would have been offered a home by the people who handed him in but they were unable to do this because they had cats already. He too was with us for a very short time.

Harvey, who arrived first, was also a stray, and in very bad condition when he arrived. Here again he would have had a home with the people handing him in if they had not already had two cats. Although it took a few weeks for him to recover, today he is a picture of health and we now have to watch his weight as he loves his food. If he sees you with a dish

of food in your hands he will jump up and down on his back legs with excitement.

Harvey is a little older than the other two but a great favourite with everyone who comes to Dilham. We would all dearly love to see him settled.

Although not a stray, Leo another cat who came into care recently, needed an operation as his eyelashes were ingrown and causing serious discomfort. He has now had “cosmetic surgery” to rectify the situation and should get a clean bill of health from his vet next week. He will then be available for re-homing. Leo is a Harvey, our lovely FIV boy lovely friendly cat, finally receiving the treatment he needed, who is appreciating the attention and loving care he is having and is another favourite with us all.

earlier this month, the Prime Minister agreed to initiate a cross-party dialogue with her newly-appointed Health Adviser, James Kent.

The meeting was attended by Norman Lamb, Sarah Wollaston, Dan Poulter, Hugo Swire, Meg Hillier, and Frank Field, representing a much wider group of colleagues who have called on the government to establish an NHS and Care Convention.

Commenting after the meeting, Norman Lamb MP said: “I very much welcomed the positive and constructive discussion with the Prime Minister. Mrs May appeared seemed willing to engage in a serious dialogue about how best to secure the future of our NHS and social care services. The future of the NHS and Social Care is more important than party politics, which has completely failed to come up with real solutions. The public are crying out for politicians to stop shouting at each other, and instead work together to make difficult decisions to ensure that patients get the right care and treatment when they need it.

There is a real urgency to this situation, and now is the time to act.

Today’s meeting was an encouraging first step, and I look forward to meeting with her advisers as soon as possible.”

Public Space Protection Order consultation underway

North Norfolk District Council calls on public to comment on locations of new Public Space Protection Orders

Public Space Protection Orders impose conditions on the use of an area, such as restrictions on dogs or the drinking alcohol in a public place.

North Norfolk District Council is currently consulting with residents on a large number of Public Space Protection Orders.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “This is a great chance for residents to have their say on protection of local areas from behaviours that could affect enjoyment of their environment.

“It is vital we all strike a balance as a community between tolerance and ensuring a few individuals don’t spoil our public spaces for the rest of us or endanger our environment. Please take part in the consultation and have your say.”

Public Space Protection Orders or PSPOs were introduced under the Government’s Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act, 2014.

The Orders forbid certain activities in a geographical area and replace Gating Orders, Dog Control Orders and Designated Public Place Orders.

Activities covered by PSPOs include restricting the use of a highway late at night, the drinking of alcohol in a public space or restricting dogs from a particular, designated location.

The Council proposes to introduce three district-wide PSPOs:

■ No dog fouling (this is currently in place under previous legislation): any person seen not clearing up after their dog on any publicly accessible land

■ Dog to be put on lead: when requested by authorised officer on any land defined as publicly accessible. This would be used when a dog is out of control and causing either fear of attack or harm to other dogs and/or people;

■ No Chinese lantern and mass balloon releases: this would cover any mass releases of these objects from all Council land.

North Norfolk District Council calls for groups to join in the Great British Spring Clean

North Norfolk District Council is backing a campaign to get half a million people out and about across Britain cleaning up their local communities in March 2017.

North Norfolk Volunteer Car Schemes to come together

North Norfolk Community Transport has announced that it will be merging its volunteer car scheme ‘MediRide’ with a similar car scheme operated by Norfolk County Council. Over the next few weeks MediRide passengers will be gradually redirected to Norfolk County Council’s Transport Plus service, part funded by North Norfolk CCG.

MediRide has helped transport hundreds of people to medical appointments at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Cromer Hospital, local doctors’ surgeries and other medical establishments. Transport Plus provides a similar service across the whole of Norfolk. Both schemes operate using volunteer drivers in their own cars.

The cost of using Transport Plus will remain the same, with passengers giving the volunteer drivers 45p per mile allowance, paid at the end of each journey. Passengers need to book their journey with Transport Plus minimum three days in advance.

Matt Townsend, North Norfolk Community Transport Chief Executive “This change has come as a result of our strong working relationship with Norfolk County Council where we have identified an overlap in services. By bringing MediRide and Transport Plus together we will free up capacity to improve and develop our minibus-based transport schemes including Dial-a-Ride which now has more demand than ever before, whilst ensuring the people of North Norfolk can still access essential medical appointments.”

The brand new Great British Spring Clean will roll out for the first time in 2017, with a view to it becoming an annual event helping to bring people together and clean up the country.

NNDC will be encouraging and supporting groups that want to help clear up litter that blights the streets, parks and beaches in our district.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett Cabinet Member for Environmental Services said “We have been working hard with our communities to keep our beaches, villages and towns clean and tidy. The Great British Spring Clean is a chance to keep up the great work and encourage more people to take part in making North Norfolk an even better place to live.”

Many other organisations will also be supporting the clean up 3-5 March, including the Women’s Institute, National Trust and RSPCA, as well as a range of businesses.

TV wildlife presenter and children’s favourite Steve Backshall is lending his support to the campaign, which is backed by anti-litter charities including Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society and Surfers Against Sewage.

NEW YEAR FIREWORKS I, Janet Warner of Cromer Town Council give notice that the street collection which took place in Cromer for the New Year Fireworks on 08 January 2017 raised the sum of £8469.75.

The total income for the event was £12,527.95 and expenditure was £7416.82 leaving a balance of £5111.13. It has been proposed that £1,500 that will be used towards funding the 2018 display and the remaining £3,611.13 given out in grants to local charities.

GRANT FUNDING If any charities local to Cromer would like to apply for grant funding from the Annual Grant Fund please contact the Town Clerk for the relevant application form. The deadline for applications from the Annual Grant Fund is 07 April 2017.

On the Up?

Too many times this season Norwich have given fans a sense of false hope by winning in around three games however things seem to be on the up although that is something I have felt many a time this season.

If city can mount the same kind of promotion charge we did back in 2015 then there could be hope for us making the playoffs however the automatics seem like a pipe dream with Newcastle and Brighton steadily distancing themselves from the pack of teams behind them.

Norwich seem to be taking steps in the right direction though, with two wins in the last two games against Wolves (3-1) and Birmingham (2-0) respectively, have pushed Norwich up the table. By no stretch of the imagination does this mean that good form is guaranteed as the Championship is amongst the toughest and most unpredictable leagues in the world, Alex Neil has also managed to keep his jib after losing to bottom table Rotherham proving that the board are hesitant to change manager at this point in the season and by now, its too late anyway and if some of Norwich’s key players

Kids’ Zone : jump, run and play all day - February half term sporting timetable altered to help families

The regular school holiday programme of sporting activities for children run by North Norfolk District Council has been given a fresh look for February half term.

A new focus on full days of activities running from 9.30am to 3pm has been adopted after feedback from parents, instead of a mix of mainly shorter sessions and an occasional full day.

The same feedback has also led to the sports teams offering early drop off and late pick up, meaning the day can be extended to 8am to 4.30pm.

The full days are priced at £10, plus £2 for each of the extended 90 minutes at either end of the day.

Woodlands Indoor Bowls Club

Full days will be held at Cromer, North Walsham and Stalham community sports centres, with one half day at Stalham. Activities include ball games, football fun day, multisports and street dance. The days will serve different age groups ranging from four to 12 years old.
