Christmas Comes Early …

Cromer Christmas Lights Volunteers are celebrating Christmas early this year having just received a cheque from Central England Co-operative.

The group is the first in North Norfolk to successfully apply to the Co-op’s Community Dividend Fund, which is open to charities and local groups. The Fund guarantees that at least 1% of the Society’s trading profit is re-invested in local communities and neighbourhood causes.

Mark Dixon, manager at Central England’s Cromer Co-op said “One of the founding principles of the Society is to give something back to our loyal customers and the scheme operates four times a year with awards which can be as much as £5,000. I am more than happy to present this cheque for £1,926.24 to the Christmas Lights Volunteers which will provide full funding to purchase new energy efficient LEDS to light up Cromer’s wonderful church.”

CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS

This term, children from five primary schools in North Norfolk have been taking part in an exciting and ambitious music, art and poetry project based around the orchestral work â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Carnival of the Animalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by Camille SaintSaens.

On 13 July at 12.30pm the musicians from â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Parnassusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, led by the internationally renowned conductor Peter Stark, will give a concert featuring â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Carnival of the Animalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at St Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church, Holt, which up to fifty children from each of five partner primary schools - Holt, Gresham Village, Langham, Overstrand and Roughton - will be attending. There will also be a public performance at 6.30pm that evening.

During the first half of the summer term, children took part in art, music and poetry workshops, based on the animal theme, to inspire and add to the musical experience.

These workshops have stimulated adventurous and imaginative ideas for the related art and poetry competitions.

The resulting art work will be exhibited in three local libraries - Cromer, Holt and Sheringham from 6-20 July and in St Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church, Holt, from 2328 July as part of the Holt Festival.

Animals project is being organised and part-funded

by FALCON, with generous funding from the Arts Council of England and the Norfolk Arts Fund. It is being run in partnership with Holt Festival (who are funding the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s concert), and is made possible by support of the five partner primary schools, as well as the Norfolk Library Service and the Rector of St Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church, Holt.

On the final day of the exhibition at St Andrewâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church in Holt, on Thursday 28 July at 6.30pm there will be a Celebratory Event, Improvements at Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and Gimingham during which a village hall. On 3 June, Cromer Lawn Tennis and Squash Club opened their improved and extended table tennis building. The building will house activities including table tennis, yoga, pilates, aerobics, and Zumba.

A BSF grant of ÂŁ8,000 was awarded to be used towards the costs of removing the existing tin shed, upgrading the existing timber building and construction of a 5m x 10m timber extension to double the size of the current table tennis building. The Club match funded the project.

Chairman Nick Amis thanked North Norfolk District Council at the opening event, saying the project could not have gone ahead without the grant. Tom FitzPatrick, leader of North Norfolk District Council and Chairman of the Big Society Fund Grants Panel, cut the ribbon on the extension and said â&#x20AC;&#x153;This type of project encourages healthy physical activity for all ages and we were delighted to be able to help with the funding.â&#x20AC;?

On 21 May, improvements to Gimingham village hall were unveiled, including replacement of the front doors, 100 new steel framed stacking chairs with fabric padded seats and an upgraded kitchen. A BSF grant of ÂŁ5,000 was agreed last September to go towards the work. North Norfolk District councillor Sue Arnold attended the event and said â&#x20AC;&#x153;The village hall, along with the church, is pivotal to the life of this community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That community has come together to raise funds for the modernisation and it was very evident at the launch how positive this project has been for the people involved.â&#x20AC;?

Since the BSF started in 2012, NNDC has awarded over ÂŁ1,170,000 to 147 community projects that are meeting local need and making a real difference to communities in North Norfolk.

Cromer WI

Our Vice President Judy Roberts welcomed a very good turnout of 46 members and two visitors to our meeting on a lovely sunny afternoon. Unlike other months, there was no outside speaker to this meeting. Instead Coral Batchelor from WI federation led us in a discussion of the two resolutions that will be proposed by delegates at the annual WI conference in Brighton later this year.

Coral stimulated discussion by using short quizzes around the topics 'the provision of facilities in hospital for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s so that family members can accompany them' and, 'Avoiding food waste and addressing food poverty'. Many members then voiced their views and listened to the argument for and against each proposal.

After tea the raffle was drawn and the competition ' something beginning with 'd' , was won by Sylvie Wilshaw with her black dog. Second place went to Freddie Abbs with her doll and in 3rd place was Judy Roberts with her donkey. Birthday posies were presented to four members.

The next meeting in June will see us celebrating the Queen’s birthday when Maureen Rispin will be giving a talk on ‘A Sandringham Visit'.

New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

Cromer WI

We began our June meeting by welcoming one new member and one visitor.

Our guest speaker was Maureen Rispin who gave us a talk in the guise of Mrs Alfred Watt. We were so enthralled that it felt as if we were back in 1919 at Sandringham listening to Mrs. Watt.

The WI started with the help of Mrs Watt in Canada in 1913, and she came to the UK and helped to set up the First WI in Llanfair PG, Wales in 1915. In 1918 Queen Mary attended a craft exhibition by the WI in the Caxton Hall in London. She was so impressed with the work that she decided to set up a branch at Sandringham and called upon Mrs Watt to help. We were told in wonderful detail of her visit to the estate and how at the meeting it was decided to form a Branch of the WI and they duly had their first meeting on 12 March 1919 with Queen Mary as President.

The current Queen is only the 4th President in 100 years at Sandringham following Queen Mary, Queen Alexandra and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and she attends the meetings every January. The talk ended with a reading of the Alberta Creed.

We then all had tea and special cakes to celebrate the Queen’s birthday made by our members. Final arrangements were made for our Strawberry Tea and visits to Blickling and Templewood. Pru Mead was thanked for arranging a lovely visit to Stody Gardens. The competition of an article beginning with E was won by Liz Holhouse with Ann Winter second and Freddie Abbs third.

Our speaker in July will be Liz Scott and the topic ‘Living History at Blickling Hall’. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street.

ROUGHTON & DISTRICT WI

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month in Roughton Village Hall, which is situated on Chapel Road, Roughton (opposite the junction to Metton).

The meetings start at 7.30pm with a chance for tea or coffee from 7pm.

Guests are always very welcome (there is a fee of £3 towards WI expenses).

Over the last couple of months. we have visited the Cromer Pier Theatre, attended Ladies Day at Fakenham Races, and also held a very successful Tea Party on the Queen’s Official Birthday, raising money jointly for our WI and Nelson’s Journey. Speakers have included Tina Vallance teaching us Bollywood Dance and Ruth Smith regaling us with stories of her career as a Life Model in her 50s. We are planning a visit to Thursford, and a Seal Trip.

Our July meeting (13th) involves planning our 2017 programme: members making suggestions of speakers, outings, events, etc. Strawberries and cream, and sparkling wine will be provided. On 10 August Chris Preston will speak about Arthritis Care, and on 14 September we have a Social Evening at Sticky Earth, decorating pottery, with a Chinese take-away to finish ! On 12 October the subject will be Temple’s Cheeses.

We have a Craft Group who regularly meet at 10am on the second Monday of the month at Roughton Village Hall, a Walking Group, and a Ten Pin Bowling team, and we also arrange visits to the races (horse and greyhound), the theatre, and gardens.

Students at Cromer Academy are holding a fundraiser for the RNLI this weekend.

Students Ella Bossley and Shannon Scarff explained that the event will be held on 25 June at 6.30pm. Customers will receive a three course meal prepared by the students and this will include a crab salad with avocado and beetroot chips for starter.

For the main students are serving roasted pork belly with homemade mash and blazed cabbage and finally for the dessert they are making Norfolk strawberry tarts with chocolates from local shop, Amy's Sweet Shop. There will be a cash bar and live music throughout the night.

Ingredients 4 x 227/8oz Braising steaks 2 tbsp Sunflower oil 3 Medium onions (rough cut) 2 Carrot (peeled and rough cut) 4 Garlic cloves (peeled and crushed) 1 Large leek (rough cut and washed) 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp Tomato paste 500ml Beef stock (stock cubes can be used) 250ml Red wine Seasoning Method

Heat the oil in a large pan.

Auditions for amateur comedy production

Read-throughs and auditions for a cleverly written comedy are being held at the end of June at the Friends Meeting House in Cremer Road, Sheringham.

The play, written by Andy Powrie, cleverly follows the story-line of The Great Escape, but instead of prisoners of war escaping from a POW camp in Germany, it’s two older ladies, escaping from their residential home.

Fed up of the repressive regime at the home, Dorothy and Ruth decide to escape. Their efforts finally succeed and they go on the run, pursued by the overbearing manager of the home, the police and Dorothy’s son, who wants to force her to sign a Power of Attorney document, so he can get control of her money. Taking evasive action where necessary, they attempt to reach a safe haven. But who can they trust? Will anyone

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

Unlike many other annual meetings around the country such as the national retailers and banks, the Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club AGM passed off relatively quietly with no calls for mass resignations, slashed salaries or removal of bonuses!

At the meeting held on 7 June at The Links Hotel, West Runton, the acting Secretary reported an increased membership of ten for the year bringing the present total to forty two. The Treasurer produced a healthy statement of accounts with the membership fee and luncheon cost held at the same low level for a further year.

After a few small changes to the Club rules were approved the outgoing Chairman, Ron Coleman, handed over the chain of office to the incoming Chairman, Barry Tomlinson, and wished him well for the coming year.

The purpose of the Club is entirely social providing an environment for making and meeting friends and hearing informative and entertaining talks, many with local themes. Our next meeting is on 4 July when, following lunch, the speaker will be Brian Butcher posing the question ‘Anne Boleyn : Saint or Sinner?’

FERIO SAXOPHONE QUARTET at TEMPLEWOOD, NORTHREPPS

The award winning saxophone quartet invited to play at the unique venue of Templewood by Cromer Music Evenings produced a very diverse programme, playing music by Ferenc Farkas, Donizetti, Singelee, Michael Nyman, J S Bach, Jean Francaix, Albeniz and Guillermo Lago.

Huw Wiggin - soprano saxophone, Ellie McMurray – alto saxophone, Jose Banuls – tenor saxophone and Shevaughan Beere – baritone saxophone played a concert of the highest standard, obviously enjoying themselves, especially in the performance of Seville by Albeniz and Ciudades by Lago, taking the listener through Tokyo, Sarajevo and Addis Ababa! The composer, being a master of the instrument, knew exactly what the saxophone was capable of. Today the Ferio Quartet matched the capabilities with virtuosic brilliance.

Prolonged applause deserved an encore which was ‘Close Your Eyes and Listen’. I am sure there were no closed eyes today and certainly no hearing aids were necessary!

May I add that to adapt a J S Bach Prelude and Fugue for any instrument other than that for which they were intended, does not work for me.

On 17 July the Manor Farm in Aldborough will play host to their annual Hog Roast With great, live, entertainment and a raffle on the day, it is always a lot of fun. The event is organised by the Good Intentions Fundraising Team (GIFT) as part of their annual fundraising efforts for a local good cause. This year the charity is Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, with proceeds going towards their Good Companions Club and Befriending Scheme.

The Hog Roast starts at 12.30pm and includes drinks on arrival, a full hog roast, with apple sauce, bread rolls, a large selection of salad items and desserts. Dietary needs can be accommodated. GIFT ask that people bring their own drink to the event. This is strictly a TICKET ONLY event so if you are interested in coming along just pop into the Age Concern day centre on Cremer Street in Sheringham or call them on 01263 821188 to reserve a place.

eases provided a revealing and stimulating talk for members of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club at the end of May. The speaker was Norma Howell, herself a Rotarian from Diss but also a volunteer for the charity Medical Detection Dogs. Members heard that dogs trained by this relatively new charity are not only alerting people with complex health conditions but also assisting the medical profession in the early detection of cancer.

The cost of training a cancer detection dog is £7,200 with an ongoing monthly cost of £600. For training a medical alert assistance dog, the cost rises to President Roger Hill £11,200. In this area, over 60 dogs are in operation presents a cheque to Medical Detection Dogs throughout the country. Patron of the charity is The volunteer, Norma Howell Duchess of Cornwall but, as yet, it receives no government funding, being wholly reliant on donations.

Mrs Howell described the two sides to the charity - one trains and partners dogs to alert and support people who manage life-threatening conditions, the other works in research in the early detection of cancers. Using their amazing sense of smell, the dogs can be trained to identify minute odour changes emitted prior to an emergency and alert the person to take preventative action.

Examples of this are Type 1 Diabetes, Addison’s Disease, Narcolepsy and severe allergies. ”Our dogs” she said “reduce paramedic call-outs and hospital admissions. In other words, they can save lives daily”.

She explained that there have been anecdotal reports for many years of dogs changing their Some of the medical behaviour around people with undiagnosed detection dogs cancers - most notably bladder, colorectal, lung and prostate cancers. Dogs are trained using scent and breath samples from clients when they are experiencing a condition.

At the conclusion of the talk, the Rotary Club made a donation of £50, plus a collection among members.

THE STRAND CLUB

The June meeting was the much anticipated visit to the National Trust's Textile Conservation Studio at Oulton Street, near Blickling Hall.

We were greeted in the foyer and a brief outline of the studio's work was explained. We then went into the main area which was filled by two vast tables with rollers at either end. On each was an ancient tapestry of the 15th century and earlier, stretched gently between roller and roller, the area to be worked on flat against the table. Conservators were busy gently stitching closely, matching threads and weaves exactly a time-consuming and intricate work.

The tapestries are cleaned when they arrive and the work to be done assessed. Then they are placed gently on the tables with a strong linen backing beneath them, which is then stitched through to give much needed added strength when the material is re-hung. One of the pieces we were studying was from a state bed, which would take years to complete. The studio were working on the hangings, the valances and the bed covering itself, all a rich crimson with gold thread decoration and what were originally sequins. We could quite see why it was called the Sparkle Bed. On the other table was a wall hanging from Hardwick House.

We were shown another wall hanging from Hardwick House upstairs, completed now; a very intricate work in a different way showing life sized figures and flowers. Commissioned by the famous Bess of Hardwick it showed her favourite subject - strong women from history!

Upstairs we were also shown the huge shallow

baths where fabric which could cope with it were gently cleaned using innovative instruments - for example a dog tooth brush and a suede brush! We were also shown the dying room – generally, the conservators found the colours they needed in commercially available silks but just occasionally they had to dye their own. The colours on the tapestries had obviously been compromised over the centuries so to achieve a match was something of an art in itself. The studio's commissions vary in size from the enormous hangings to small , which we also saw.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all the staff at the studio. They made us very welcome, never seemingly tired of our interminable questions, and gave of their considerable knowledge willingly, cheerfully and with great enthusiasm.

A great thirst had built over the hour and a half we were concentrating and admiring, so we headed to the Bucks Arms where a cream tea had been ordered by Glo. Olympic sized scones with clotted cream and jam were soon demolished and conversation flowed over the tea and coffee. We extend our thanks to the Bucks Arms too. We were half an hour earlier than expected but they didn't seem fazed at all.

They looked after us excellently.

It went very well with no hitches and everyone enjoyed it thoroughly.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2016 - ROYAL CONNECTIONS

The Queen made her 51st visit to the Chelsea Flower Show this year and there were many floral tributes to mark her 90th birthday. This made it a special occasion for all of us lucky enough to attend.

A grand floral arch was erected at the Bull Ring Entrance, inspired by a painting in the Royal Collection of a floral arch created to celebrate a visit of Queen Victoria to Reigate and follows a worldwide tradition of building triumphal arches. The arch was festooned with Britishgrown flowers. The arch was created by Shane Connolly, who was the florist responsible for directing the horticultural elements of the

At the London Gate, the RHS created six ‘crowning’ moments, one on top of each of the six gate pillars. Each was planted with seasonal English favourites such as roses, clematis and foxgloves that spilt over the edges and climbed up the iron arches.

yellow-orange flowers, the middle-sized in pink-red, and the largest in bluepurple. The flower heads used were relatively small so the large hydrangeas were divided into individual florets to create a tapestry feel.

This dramatic installation was built inside a wall made of 90 black flowermarket buckets and on the back of the wall were foliage and flowers in green and white arranged to look as natural as possible. To keep both sides of the display in mint condition throughout the week an extra 2000 stems were kept in reserve.

Peter Beales Roses launched its ‘Sandringham’ rose reinforcing the company’s Norfolk roots.

This deep pink, heavily scented shrub rose was chosen by the Duchess of Cornwall from a selection of three presented to her at the Sandringham Flower Show of 2014.

The National Chrysanthemum Society introduced the first pink and green indoor chrysanthemum, named ‘Princess Charlotte’ so that the youngest member of the family did not feel left out.

All-in-all there was much to see and enjoy at this year’s show and our day there was blessed with very warm weather. However, my lasting memory has nothing to do with royalty but is the display of hepaticas by Ashwood Nurseries.

These are tricky perennials in the buttercup family requiring full sun in spring and deep shade in summer. I have lost my one and only hepatica but John Massey has mastered their cultivation and brought to Chelsea an enormous variety of these plants in many colours and, quite rightly, won the Diamond Jubilee Award for the best exhibit in the floral pavilion.

North Norfolk District Council brings Britain’s oldest breed of goat to Cromer cliff to control scrubland.

A new habitat management project by NNDC hopes to keep an area of Cromer cliff under control with the introduction of goats.

Eight Bagot billy goats will be released into a fenced off area in June where their grazing will keep unwanted plant species and excessive growth to a minimum.

In the past, the cliff area has become overgrown, leading to a problem with litter embedded and snagged in bushes. The Bagot goats graze on rough materials rather than grass and will therefore keep plant growth over the area under control.

Cllr Angie Fitch-Tillett, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said “This is an exciting project we hope the people of Cromer will be able to enjoy two-fold – for the habitat management the goats will offer and the enjoyment of having unusual animals in the town. Now residents and visitors will not only be able to enjoy the beautiful Cromer sunsets, but watch our Billy goats working hard to keep the town beautiful.”

The Bagot is believed to be Britain’s oldest breed of goat and unlike most other breeds - that favour mountains and uplands - it developed in the English lowlands. Bagots are hardy and easy to tame.

NNDC’s Cromer goats have been checked and monitored by a local vet and their welfare will continue to be appraised over their time on Cromer cliff. They will be surrounded by double livestock fencing that will be six foot tall at the bottom of the slope. The fences will be checked twice a day. Cllr Fitch-Tillett added “We must ask people not to feed or touch the goats because they have a job of work to do and we need them to not get distracted.”

Steam Trains to the Norfolk Broads

Wildlife Trust and the goats arrived with the District Council in April.

Two came from the Dinosaur Park near Lenwade in Norfolk, and the other six from Levens Hall, Cumbria where they are raised as a semi-feral parkland breed. They have spent the past weeks getting used to one another and settling into their new group.

The goats will be released into the fenced-off area in June and remain until October or November when they will be taken to other NNDC land to graze over the winter. If the goats clear the land too rapidly they will be moved to other land for grazing.

Strawberries and Steam to the Norfolk Broads

A taste of summer awaits visitors to the Bure Valley Railway this July. Enjoy a nostalgic journey by steam on Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Railway, with a traditional summer treat of strawberries and cream. The Bure Valley Railway is giving free strawberries and cream to every fare-paying passenger on Saturdays and Sundays in July.

Trains depart from both Aylsham and Wroxham regularly throughout each day and The Broadland Boat Train is available, which combines a steam train ride with a cruise on the Norfolk Broads.

The railway’s facilities include an 80-seater Café at Aylsham Station, which can provide everything from a cup of tea to a full meal, gift shops and free parking at both Aylsham and Wroxham Stations. All trains have special wheelchair accessible coaches and disabled toilet facilities are available at both stations.

Cromer Pier Show 2016 39 years of First Class Variety

From one of the UK’s most Famous Pier Theatres Bringing Audiences Talent from Norfolk to Australia Back for another recording breaking year, Cromer Pier Show is now the only ‘End-of-the-Pier’ show in the world and, if advance bookings are anything to go by, this year will see a high demand for tickets.

Headlining this year’s show is comedian Phil Butler, who last appeared in 1998 and 1999.

Phil is truly a comedy act like no other, using his razor sharp wit to inject his hilarious take on entertainment. His stage skills include magic, juggling and ventriloquism which, added to his wealth of experience, has made Phil a hit at both mainstream and alternative venues.

Joining Phil is Australia’s favourite comedy juggler, James BuSTAR. James appeared on Australia’s Got Talent and is now a headline act at performances and festivals across the globe.

Making her first ever appearance at the Pavilion Theatre is Marea Smithson, a comedy impressionist from Norfolk. She has been impersonating people for as long as she can remember and began performing on stage at around the age of eighteen, after the girls at work (in the wage office at Rowntree Mackintosh) encouraged

her to enter the ‘Search for a Star’ talent contest at The Talk of The East in Norwich. Marea’s usual place of work is at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, as a secretary in the radiology department, where she has worked for the past 25 years and, although she enjoys it, the chance of doing a summer season in Cromer was so different and exciting Marea could not say no. WILLIAM IS CERTAINLY MAKING HIMSELF HEARD

William Johnson proudly displays the cup awarded to him for second place in the Solo Performer Section of this year’s East Anglia Brass Band Association Spring Competition, in which he competed against musicians of diverse ages.

William who is 12 years old plays bass trombone with the Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band and produces a quality of sound expected of more experienced musicians.

However, his musical talent does stop there.

William has achieved Grade 5 - 8 is the top grade - in the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music examination, not only for trombone but for piano and music theory as well.

His enthusiasm is boundless.

If you wish to hear William playing the bass trombone, which is taller than him with the slide at full reach, then look out for the forthcoming Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band concerts, frequently at St Peter’s Church, Sheringham.

Children’s story mix added to summer drama

A mash-up of classic children's stories is being added toSheringham’s summer drama season in a new youth theatre venture.

‘Tangled Tales’ is a fun cocktail of much-loved yarns and characters that sees Hansel and Gretel meet Red Riding Hood's big bad wolf, the Wicked Witch, Snow Queen and the Three Little Pigs. It will be performed by a young cast, who also wrote the show and have ambitions of carving out careers in the performing arts, either on or off stage. The drama will be staged at the Little Theatre from 2-5 August with its daytime shows laced into the venue's well-known summer repertory season which has now been running for 56 years. It is by the Spinning Wheel Theatre’s ‘Takeover’ company who first aired the show at Bury St Edmunds earlier is year.

The company's artistic director Amy Wyllie said "Sheringham wanted to add a children's show to the summer season and this seemed ideal. There are twists to the characters with the wolf as a wimp and the little pigs as baddies’. It gets over a message for children not to judge people by appearances," said Ms Wyllie, who is also directing The Railway Children in the summer season.

The Theatre Company are also running a Drama Summer School in Sheringham during the first week of the holidays for young people aged 10-16 years.

North Norfolk District Council wins Empty Homes Award

The prestigious Empty Homes Innovation Award has been given to NNDC’s Enforcement Board for their innovative approach to bringing empty homes back into use.

The Award recognises the Board’s close working across Council departments to ensure projects are identified and plans actioned without delay. Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council Judy Oliver said “We are incredibly proud to be given this award and I would like to offer my congratulations to the Enforcement Board.

“The success of this group is about the momentum to make things happen. The Board is a significant strength of the Council, speeding up both actions and outcomes in relation to the most problematic empty or derelict sites.”

NNDC’s Enforcement Board has considered 127 cases since it was set up in 2012, with positive action being taken on 121 cases.

David Gibbens Secretary of the Empty Homes Network said “Congratulations on this well-deserved success which will be an inspiration to other authorities up and down the country.”

The Award was presented by the Empty Homes Network at their annual conference in Birmingham in May. 23

St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival

Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival, which takes place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham from Thursday 7 July to Sunday 10 July.

Last year’s theme was ‘A Touch of Wonder’ and the theme was very cleverly interpreted.

The annual festival, which has been run for over 40 years, is a major event for both the church and the town and regularly attracts over 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.

This year’s theme is ‘I AM’ and over 25 arrangements will depict this theme, with titles such as ‘I AM going to the zoo’, ‘I AM a fisherman’ and ‘I AM a bake off contestant’. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, adds to the ambiance of the event.

Now that Harvey is much better he will be having another blood test, which will be sent to an external laboratory to confirm whether or not he is FIV positive. Once the result comes back, and depending on the result, he will be put up for adoption, possibly as an indoor cat. We will update you on the outcome next time.

Garfie, one of the other cats mentioned last time as being confirmed as FIV positive, has now left for a new home with another FIV positive cat.

As he came from a multi cat household and is used to having feline companions, this is the ideal home for this lovely little lad.

Last time we mentioned the two kittens which are being hand reared and the importance of ensuring that to compensate for being without their mother’s milk, they get the next best start in life by providing good quality cat milk and food. We also mentioned the need to provide them with opportunities to interact with people and other animals and also to learn hunting and playing skills.

Another priority, not only with kittens but also all the cats, is to ensure that they are vaccinated to protect them from some of the serious infectious diseases (including FELV) which can affect felines. All our cats and kittens will have had, at least, their first injection before leaving our care and we pay for the second to be done with one of the three veterinary practices with whom we have accounts and which hold supplies of our vaccines. When a cat or kitten leaves for a new home we advise the new family not to let them go outside until at least two weeks after the second injection has been given. This is particularly important for kittens as the antibodies they received from their mothers milk will have depleted and they will be more susceptible to infection as a consequence. Booster injections are recommended to ensure the cat remains protected and the kitten/cat’s vet will be able to advise the new family when these should be given.

We had a steady flow of supporters and cat lovers to our Spring Sale on 14 May and raised £658 for the cats in care. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who came to our sale. Tickets are now available for the Hog Roast at Dilham which takes place on Sunday 10 July.

CROMER CEMETERY - Memorial Testing In order to meet the requirements of the Town Council’s insurers, all memorials in the cemeteries in Cromer are inspected on a 5 yearly basis with the most recent inspections having taken place in April. The

memorials have been professionally hand tested for stability and any which were found to be in danger of falling were laid down.

Some months ago the Town Council agreed a project to reinstate the laid memorials to current standards. R. Wells Memorials are working at the cemetery to fit ground anchors and re-erect the laid memorials. A charge in respect of the costs involved will be placed on each grave concerned and where possible the family contacted. No further interments or memorials will be permitted until the charge has been repaid by the family concerned.

Tributes on graves Extracts from Cromer Cemetery Rules & Regulations: Graves: 27. No plants, trees, shrubs or other vegetation of any kind should be planted on or around graves or anywhere in the cemetery. The burial authority may prune, cut down or remove any vegetation which, in the opinion of the burial authority, has become unsightly, overgrown or is interfering with graves.

28. To assist with the maintenance of the cemetery, tributes are permitted on the plinth of the headstone/memorial only. Flowers and wreaths are not permitted on the grassed area of the grave except for the period of 4 weeks after interment. If there is no headstone or memorial on a grave, tributes must be restricted to an area at the head of the grave in line with other memorials and not exceeding an area covering 2’6” x 1’.

To retain the natural ambience of the cemetery, items which emit light or sound or movement are not permitted. Tributes in this area must be approved by Cromer Town Council. In the interests of health and safety no breakable items are permitted. The burial authority reserve the right to may remove any items which have been placed on the grave if, in the opinion of the burial authority, they present a health and safety risk (particularly if damaged).

Cremation Plots: 75. Flower containers must be incorporated into the tablet at all times.

No other receptacle will be permitted. The burial authority may remove any other objects which are not authorised. Unauthorised items will be removed without payment or consideration of compensation.

Note: Separate rules apply to the baby grave section of the cemetery.

England played well against an average Russian side to kick off their Euro 2016 campaign. However they could only come out with a draw after a header in the dying minutes of the game.

England started in positive fashion with chances coming through attempts by Adam Lallana, who perhaps could have done better with them as they didn’t test the Russian goalkeeper Akinfeev, with one shot being straight at him and the other going narrowly wide.

One major talking point to come out of this game was the decision

by Roy Hodgson to place Harry Kane on corners. This was because Harry Kane is definitely more of a force to be reckoned with inside the penalty area, rather than being the man who whips in the crosses from dead ball situations. Furthermore, Harry Kane stands over 6ft tall and is an aerial threat to opposing teams, meanwhile Raheem Sterling, who is a small player, was inside the box instead and he has a far less chance of reaching the ball from a corner than Harry Kane would.

In the second half England continued their pressure from the first half, with a big chance falling to England captain Wayne Rooney as he hit a beautiful right footed shot into the bottom left hand corner, only for it to be superbly turned onto the post by Akinfeev.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 73rd minute as Eric Dier smashed an unstoppable 20 yard free-kick past the impressive Akinfeev to give England the lead their performance warranted.

However, in typical England fashion in the dying embers of the game, some poor defending allowed Russian defender Berezutski to climb highest in the box to loop a header over Joe Hart to crush the hearts of the thousands of England fans watching at home and in the Stade Velodrome.

Overall, there are positives that England can take from the game.

However the match will be forever over shadowed by the disturbing scenes at the end of the match with Russian fans storming into the England section and attacking fans as they tried to desperately escape.

In one of the early kick offs of the Euro’s, England fought brilliantly against a robust Welsh side in what was one of the best games of the tournament so far.

In the opening minutes of the game a mistake by the Welsh defence allowed Dele Alli to race through on Stuurige is a winner goal and play a wonderful ball into the area for Raheem Sterling to pounce on however he put the ball over from close range when it seemed easier to hit the target.

Another big chance for England came through Chris Smalling that narrowly went past the left hand side post.

The game however took a turn for the worse from the perspective of an England fan as Gareth Bale hit a free kick from around 35 yards which crept into the bottom corner after some woeful goalkeeping from Joe Hart, who could do nothing else other than parry Bale’s effort into his net.

England came back after the break with a bang, as Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were replaced by Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy, after Sterling and Kane’s poor first half performances.

Roy Hodgson’s half time subs paid dividends as Vardy capitalised on a mistake from an Ashley Williams header allowed to him to swivel on the half turn and place the ball past Wayne Hennessey.

Finally, in the dying embers of the game, Daniel Sturridge topped off the best second half comeback England could’ve wished for as he worked his way into the area and poked the ball past Hennessey.

After a poor first half, this result gives England some hope if they can make it through to the knockout stages as it will only take a point against Slovakia to secure their place in the next round.

away at Drayton. The game was very close but at the end when all rink shots were calculated Cromer had won by 10 shots. Well done to all the players. The next opponents were Holt BC who the club had played in the league some four days previously.

Don’t look above! Cromer were hoping for a better result on the Sunday morning but I regret to say that in the end Holt were again the winners by an impressive 72 – 48, now that is a good win, so they progress to the next round.

Finally there came the Bales Cup against another Premier League team North Walsham and after a very very close game North Walsham won 57 – 49. The Federation team played away against Lakeside Pilgrims and won 7 – 2, and then followed this up with an excellent win at home against South Lynn 9 – 0. The following week the team were away against Holt Tawny Owls and notched up another fine victory with a 5 – 4 win. The weather at the Fakenham game and at Lakeside was awful, and that can be said for most of the evenings that bowls has been played this season. The NANSA team really got their game together when they entertained Weybourne at home and won 7 - 1. The next game was again at home this time against Aylsham and the team went one point better with an 8 – 0 win.

Tales from the Bowling Green ...

The Wednesday evening NBA league team have had some disappointing results. At home to RG Carter ‘A’ they lost 1 – 4 and the following week on a most un-summer like damp evening at Fakenham they lost 0 – 5. I know they can do better. Well I thought they could as just after having typed the previous sentence comes the news that at home to Holt there was another 0 – 5 defeat! Admittedly Holt have now developed a strong side but all will admit we were hoping for more than a whitewash.

During this period there were three county competitions to play. The Lord Fermoy Cup where one rink of 4 play at home and another rink plays away on the same evening, with the overall score counting to decide the winners.

The opposition was Premier League team Acle St Edmunds but a good fight was shown by both rinks However in the end when both scores were added together Cromer had lost by 14 shots. Disappointing but everyone did their best. The next Competition was the Jermy Cup which is a mixed games where three rinks play each other but there must be two men and two ladies in each rink. The first opponents in this game were RG Carter and the game was played

Fundraising Cyclists Complete their Journey at Cromer Pier

Cromer Pier linked with its sister pier in Bournemouth last month – all in the name of fund raising for the Meningitis Trust.

A group of four friends departed Bournemouth Pier at the beginning of the Bank Holiday weekend, on their bicycles, heading to Cromer Pier where they completed their journey on the Sunday evening.

Duncan Truffrey, one of the riders, almost lost his son 15 years ago to meningitis, so the cause is very close to his heart. Luckily, his son is now a healthy 21 year old but sadly there are others who have not been so lucky. His family has raised a staggering £50,000 over the past few years for Meningitis Now.
