CROMER IS CROWNED PIER OF THE YEAR!

Covering Cromer, Mundesley, the Runtons and surrounding villages in association with the North Walsham Times and Sheringham Independent

Cromer has been voted Pier Of The Year 2015 by the members of the National Piers Society.

It previously won the award in 2000. Worthing took second place, with Eastbourne and Llandudno tying for third.

Cromer Pier is in its 114th year. It was designed by John James Webster (1845-1914). Initially a toll of 2d (1p) was levied, rising to 4d when concerts were given on the bandstand. In due course this was roofed over and converted into a roller skating rink.

L

But by 1921 it had become a fully-fledged theatre and welcomed its first concert party, the Rolling Stones! Astonishingly the Pavilion Theatre has survived ever since and is now home to the UK’s last surviving End Of The Pier show, which is produced by Openwide Coastal and runs twice daily for 13 weeks in the summer and 4 weeks at Christmas. Such is its popularity that the theatre’s auditorium has had to be enlarged. Only four other pier theatres survive in the UK.

Fibre and Earth Studios

Since opening on 14 February, Keri and Karen at Fibre and Earth Studios have been really pleased with the response to their new studios and workshops.

With opportunities to learn felting, wheelthrown and hand built pottery, lino-cut printing and papier mache, there’s something for everyone.

Keri says “we offer a really varied and interesting selection of courses and workshops and people have been keen to sign up. We have had such a great response from the community. People have been popping in when passing for a cuppa and a chat and leaving with a creative experience to look forward to. Karen’s wheel thrown taster sessions have proved really popular and are still available on request. Tuesday Felting workshops are booking up fast so if you fancy making a felted picture or book cover, some slippers or a felt bag then do get in touch.. Crayford and Abbs Nissan at Bodham are pleased to have raised £250 for Red Nose Day earlier this month.

The money was raised by offering a car wash with donations to Red Nose Day.

In conjunction with North Norfolk Radio, we also offered Woodfields School in Sheringham free face painting to three of their classes – this was much appreciated by the pupils and fun was had by all. Nicki from NNR was superb and made a lot of very happy faces come alive!

CROMER IS CROWNED PIER OF THE YEAR!

Continued from front cover... The pier is picturesquely situated below the Victorian splendour of the Hotel de Paris, where Oscar Wilde stayed in 1892 and Stephen Fry worked as a waiter in the 1970s. Children love to fish for crabs from its decks. An RNLI lifeboat station at the pier head contains a museum and shop. The Pier has been used in films such as Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, and will feature in a forthcoming BBC drama series Partners In Crime, starring David Walliams and Jessica (Call The Midwife) Raine.

The pier sustained severe damage during the winter storms of 2013, forcing the cancellation of nearly two weeks’ performances in the Pavilion Theatre. Both the Box Office and Restaurant were destroyed but repairs are almost complete.

The National Piers Society’s President Gavin Henderson commented “There’s No Business like Show Business, and Cromer Pier proves it! Congratulations to all concerned.” Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, which owns the Pier, said: “This is a fantastic reward for the significant investment in repairs and refurbishment that has enabled us to return Cromer’s iconic landmark to its former glory”.

Nathan’s recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients 16oz Good quality Chocolate - 2oz Salted Butter 12oz Granulated Sugar - 4 Large Eggs 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Essence - 2oz Cake Flour - Pinch of Salt - 14oz Chocolate Chips

Method Melt the 16oz of chocolate and set aside. With an electric mixer combine the sugar and butter, add the eggs then add the Vanilla, salt and flour. With mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted chocolate and add chocolate chips and pecan nuts. Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment. Heat oven to 180c, then with an ice cream scoop or two tablespoons scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes. This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.

North Norfolk is all set for an egg-citing Easter of fun activities

For the best egg-citing Easter fun, North Norfolk is the place to be, with a bumper activity programme for all the family to enjoy during the Easter holiday period.

North Norfolk District Council has organised 50 sessions covering 29 different sports and activities for the whole family to enjoy across all three community sports centres in the district. Alongside this, there are also some special countryside events taking place at Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood, Bacton Woods and Pretty Corner Woods.

Councillor Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Cultural Services, said: “We are confident that with a host of activities to choose from, there really is something for everyone to get involved with and enjoy this Easter. The programme has been developed to enable individuals from across the district to take part in a wide variety of recreational activities. Keep your eyes peeled for the Easter bunny, who will be hopping in to some of the activities to deliver some delicious treats.”

The activities will take place across the district from Monday 30 March to Thursday 9 April 2015. Among the events on offer are mix of traditional sports such as netball, trampolining along with more adventurous activities such as rifle shooting and KMX Go Kart Racing.

Programme guides have been distributed to schools in the district and are available from most council facilities. For further information including details on how to book or to receive a copy of the programme guide, contact Colin on 07917834960 for the sports activities or for the countryside events contact Annie on 07920576634. To download a copy please visit: www.northnorfolk.org/sports

Early booking is highly recommended for the sports activities as spaces are strictly limited and are selling out fast. However, no booking is required for the countryside events, just turn up with your family and friends!

CROMER AND DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Each year at the Chelsea Flower Show visitors are asked to say what their favourite flowers are. Favourites go in cycles. The rose, for instance, was not in fashion in the 1980s and 1990s but has recovered some of its popularity in recent years. Sweet peas have been voted Britain’s favourite annual every year and they were the topic chosen by our speaker at our March meeting. Geoff Freeman owned one of the largest companies supplying sweet pea seeds to seed companies so who better to tell us about this popular plant.

The plants we are familiar with today originated in Sicily over 200 years ago. Sweet peas can be of any colour except black and this makes them unusual in the plant world. They are easy to grow as long as a few basic rules are followed. If sown straight into the ground the soil must be warm so late March/early April is the best time to get them going. Five or six seeds in a three inch pot is an alternative way to start them off and this way means that the plants will probably flower sooner. When sowing in pots a useful tip is to water the seeds when sown and then water them again at least twice more but with five minute gaps between waterings. This will help germination, it seems. Grandiflora varieties are best for gardens as they are not too tall but Spencers are best for trellises. Plants must be watered and when in flower these must be picked every day to prolong the growing season. A high nitrogen feed will help. ‘Norman Wisdom’ was recommended as a very good white variety, ‘Sarah Kennedy’is a popular pink variety, ‘Just Jenny’ is a lovely cream colour and ‘King Tutankhamun’is a stunning blue. The best for scent is, unsurprisingly, the variety ‘High Scent’. ‘Patio Perfection’ has a short growing habit, comes in blues, pinks and reds and is ideal for pots and containers. On a visit to Houghton Hall a few years ago members of the society were encouraged to pick as many sweet peas as we liked in order to encourage more flowers. On the way back to Cromer the scent in the coach was overpowering!

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 8 April at 7.30 pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. Charlotte Philcox, well known for her appearances on Radio Norfolk, Graham McDonald from North Walsham Garden Centre and Peter Purdy from Woodgate Nursery at Aylsham will make up a panel to answer questions on gardening and related matters. Do come along if you can as it is bound to be great evening. Visitors are always very welcome. Cost £2.

The speaker for this meeting was Charlotte Philcox and the talk was entitled 'All about Seeds and Sowing'. It was lovely to welcome Charlotte back to the Club. The talk gave an insight into seed saving, and also on the ways different seeds had to be sown so they had a good start in life. Advice was given on the types of compost to be used and the wide variety of pots and modules that are available. Charlotte gave a demonstration on sowing seeds, and gave advice on watering and the use of propagators. The talk concluded with the opportunity to ask questions. The talk was enjoyed by all, and it was well timed as it was a lovely sunny afternoon just right for thinking about seed sowing! The meeting was attended by 48 members, and two visitors.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 7 April when the speaker will be Jaime Blake from Bressingham Gardens. It will start at 2.30pm at Overstrand Parish Hall, The Londs.

Sheringham to Yarmouth – An Easterly Viewpoint

East Norfolk through the eyes of eight local painters – including six members of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists The Gallery Norfolk in Cromer has teamed up with eight artists – most of them members of the distinguished East Anglian Group of Marine Artists – for its most ambitious exhibition yet.

From 27th March 2015 to 21st April, ‘Sheringham to Yarmouth - An Easterly Viewpoint’ will show some 40 paintings, focusing on the Eastern corner of Norfolk, from Sheringham to Yarmouth, and including the Norfolk Broads. This breezy, rural area, with its sometimes austere landscape, has long attracted and fascinated artists, particularly for its light, which Lowestoft-born Richard Dack, Chairman of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists (EAGMA), describes as “ethereal, shifting and delicate, different to anywhere else in the UK”.

The idea for the exhibition grew from a discussion that Polly Miller, who runs The Gallery Norfolk, had with two marine artists whose paintings have become identified with the gallery: Gareth Jones, whose imagery evokes breaking waves, and Su Chisnell, a seasoned sailor whose work captures the grace and dynamism of yachts. Joining Jones and Chisnell in ‘Sheringham to Yarmouth An Easterly Viewpoint’ are six members of EAGMA: Richard Dack, Paul Darley, Andrew King, Patrick Boswell, Raymond Leech and Jane Cort. Their eminence in their chosen artistic field is affirmed by the initials after their names, such as RSMA (Royal Society of Marine Artists) and ROI (Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI).

“The Gallery Norfolk has always had a focus on the sea and nature,” says Polly Miller, who established the gallery in 2012. “We’ve shown

work by established Norfolk painters and also for signed limited edition prints start at under commissioned other well-known names to give well under £100, though The Gallery Norfolk us their particular offers a range of art for all pockets. take on the The gallery also offers an in-house coastline. Over the Easter Holidays Wet Dog in Cromer together with ‘The Original Surf Bead’ 252168 company Nalu Beads, will be running a competition to design a special Nalu Bead for Cromer!

CROMER NEEDS A NALU BEAD!

01263 824701 Mob: 07900

Hayes + Storr – All you’ll ever need!

Nalu beads are inspired by surf spots from the UK, Europe & Worldwide. Sometimes it’s the colours - the sky, the sea, the coastline that characterise a break or a beach, sometimes it’s the feel or the mood of a place.

The beads are hand made by skilled artisans using Murano glass that’s sourced from Italy that helps to create that unique finish to each bead. Normally the designs are done by Nalu Beads themselves, but this time it’s up to you!

Wet Dog owner Phil Weston says ‘Nalu beads are that special memento from the surf destinations you love; they reflect everything magical about that place’.

Solicitors & Notaries With over 35 specialist lawyers to assist you, why look anywhere else? Call Sheringham – 01263 825959 www.hayesandstorr.co.uk law.sheringham@hayes-storr.com

‘Our aim is to create an amazing bead that is unique to Cromer, but we want the design to come from the people who live here or visit here, those that are the most passionate about the area’. Sales and Marketing Manager of Nalu Beads Rhiannon Davis is delighted to be involved with the competition ‘We’re really excited to be teaming up with Wet Dog to run a competition to ‘Design a bead for Cromer’. These competitions are always really popular, it’s a great way for people to get involved in the creation of a Nalu Bead for somewhere that means so much to them.’

CROMER SKATE PARK CHARITY BALL 2015 The Cromer Skate Park campaign has hosted another successful charity ball, raising a profit of ÂŁ878 towards the upkeep and maintenance of the town's new skate park. The campaign reached its initial fundraising target of ÂŁ150,000 in September last year. After a hiatus to allow for the worst of the winter weather, construction work began on the Meadow on Tuesday 17th March. Cromer's new custom designed skate park is expected to be fully completed and operational by June of this year. In the meantime, however, the drive to raise funds to support the ongoing operation of the skate park continues apace. The campaign, a registered charity with the express aim of constructing and maintaining a skate park in Cromer, hosted its second annual charity ball at historic Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel on the evening of Saturday 14 March. Numbers were up slightly from last year's inaugural event, with 76 guests, including Cromer's Deputy Mayor Tim Adams. Norwich magician Tyler Harrison kicked the black tie event off in great style, as guests were treated to a superb hour-long set of classic closeup conjuring. Eyebrows shot up and jaws dropped throughout the venue as Tyler, a consummate professional, demonstrated his sleight of hand to the amazement and delight of all. The skate park committee wishes to extend particular thanks to Tyler for getting the evening off to such a wonderful start.Northrepps Cottage laid on a sumptuous three-course meal, which was highly praised by all. This in turn was followed by music and dancing, as well as further fundraising activities. The function room was beautifully dec-

orated, and complemented by lighting and music provided by Steve Jolly and the team from Sound Stage Systems. Special thanks should be extended to Johnno, Andy and Lucy, who took such great care of the guests on the night. In short, the skate park charity ball was, once again, a very special event, and a great night was had by all. The profit to the Cromer Skate Park campaign of ÂŁ878 came from the sale of tickets, and from both a raffle and a silent auction conducted on the night. As last year, many local shops and businesses dug deep to supply prizes in support of this very worthy cause. Raffle prizes kindly donated by Beauty The Cromer Skate Park campaign is aware that Boutique, Bentons Jewellers, Bond Street the ball could not have been such an enormous Jewellers, CafĂŠ Main, Castle Museum Norwich, success without the continuing goodwill of local Chevertons, Cromer Carpets, Cromer Farm Shop, business, and the extraordinary support it has alCromer Furniture, Cromer Market / Cromer Gift ways received from those both living in and visitShop, Cromer Pier, Davies Fish Shop, Discount ing the area. Packed meeting hears plea for Park friends – and ideas

Community Consultation launched by the Friends of North Lodge Park

Nearly 100 people packed into Cromer’s Garden Street Community Centre on 4 March for the inaugural meeting of the Friends of North Lodge Park to “have their say” on the future of the Park.

A widespread questionnaire consultation has been designed to start the process of collecting ideas to feed into plans for the Park. Launching the questionnaire, Tony Knight from the Friends steering group said “The Friends’ key role is representing the views of the community, to be able to say ‘people want this’ or ‘don’t want that’ on their behalf.

“The Friends feel passionately about the Park, most of us remember when it was a lively place with lots of facilities,” said Friends steering group chair Carolyn Candish. “The formation of the Friends of North Lodge Park is the first opportunity for the community to be part of the decision-making process about what happens in the park.”

North Lodge Park is in the process of being transferred from NNDC to Cromer Town Council, and the meeting heard that Cromer Town Council had agreed a budget of £21,626 for the Park in 2015-16, with a £150,000 ‘dowry’ from NNDC also available. Concern was expressed by several people at the meeting whether the Town Council budget was sufficient as it seemed much lower than previous figures quoted by NNDC for running the Park.

“Assuming there are no further hold-ups, the transfer could take place by the end of March,” said Carolyn Candish. “There won’t be an open cheque-book, but both the Town Council and the Friends will be able to apply for grants for specific projects.”

Cromer WI

Local people lost no time at the meeting to air some of their views during a lively half-hour open discussion, with memories of good experiences in the Park and a hope that the Park will be restored and properly maintained for future generations.

Local architect Bernard Smith said: “This is a new beginning for the park, and we’ve got to think of the youth of the future, so the park has to change. This is the beginning of a process, so let’s be positive.”

The results of the questionnaire will be used to develop plans with the Town Council when ownership of the park is transferred from the District Council, explained Carolyn Candish.

“This questionnaire is very much a starting point in this process, an opportunity to collect ideas to help come up with a plan to discuss with the Town Council. It will provide evidence of the feelings of the community".

“It’s about looking forward and being positive. It’s a fresh starting point, a clean sheet of paper.”

“Even though the transfer of the park is not yet complete, the Friends are up and running to represent the views of people in Cromer about what they want to see in North Lodge Park,” she concluded.

“Becoming a Friend of North Lodge Park will mean the chance to help develop its future, open up creative opportunities, and be a lot of fun.”

The questionnaire can be completed online at northlodgepark.org.uk; paper copies are available from Budgens in Cromer.

The two-page questionnaire – available online and in paper form – is designed to provide a flavour of the sort of developments, if SOME THINGS WERE MADE FOR EACH OTHER« any, people would like to see in the Park.

We opened our March meeting by welcoming one new member and two visitors.

Our speaker was Kindra Jones and her talk was entitled “The Power behind the Throne” which gave us an insight to the life and wives of Henry VIII. Catherine of Aragon who was Queen for 24 years was divorced so he could marry Anne Boleyn. Anne was then executed after only 3 years as she could not give Henry a son. Jane Seymour came next and she died just after giving birth to a son. Anne of Cleves followed but was not popular with Henry, he called her the Mare of Flanders and that marriage was quickly annulled. Kathryn Howard was next and was eventually executed for treason. His last wife Katherine Parr ended up being his nursemaid and outlived him.

Along with the stories Kindra had clothing and household objects from the time. Our President Glenice looked very fetching when she tried on the kirtle although due to the weight of it she could not move very much.

After the break we carried on with the meeting. The competition for a pot pourri sachet or bowl was won by Liz Holhouse with Pat Ward second and Eileen Tucker third. Volunteers were asked for to set up a craft group as we have quite a few creative tasks coming up. A walk was arranged for Blickling Hall and some members are entering a scrabble competition in April.

Our speaker for next month is Mrs. Maureen Rispin talking about The Start of Sandringham WI in 1919. New members are always welcome on the second Thursday of the month at 2pm in the Community Hall in Garden Street. Cromer Times 466 March 28th 2015

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Domino, Solitaire and Octopussy, the kittens mentioned last time, have now been blood tested and we are at present waiting for the results to come back. We will advise you of the result in the next issue.

If you include the cats that arrived last year, but were still with us in January, we have had 71 cats in care this year, 35 of which have found loving new homes. 36 of the total of 71 were signed over to Cats’ Protection by someone who was not their owner but was concerned for their welfare.

We are aware from their history that some of these did indeed originally have homes but for whatever reason their owners had abandoned them. This was the situation with a colony we dealt with last year where the owner of the adult cats, none of which had been neutered, were left when the people moved. In another instance, a mother cat had taken up residence on a car park where cats were being fed regularly by a member of the public. It is easy in these circumstances to identify the cats as

being genuine strays and not just one of those that likes to wander.

When a cat turns up in someone’s garden it is essential to make appropriate checks to ensure that there is not an owner in the neighbourhood and that we are not “stealing” their pet. This is because, in law, a cat is regarded as being the ‘property’ of the owner and to take it would be regarded as theft in the same way as any other property. Obviously, if the cat is in danger or requires attention we can take it in if we have the room, without making the necessary checks. In these instances we would hope the

owner, if there is one, would contact us to enquire whether or not their cat has been handed in. We would not attempt to re-home the cat straightaway in case it had an owner. We have in the past had cats brought to us as they look quite frail, only to find that the cat is actually well loved and receiving attention for a medical condition from their vet.

Generally speaking, efforts and checks always need to be made to make sure the cat is a stray. Enquiries to the local vets, checking with all the neighbours and putting a paper collar on the cat are the usual ways to do this and are very often successful. It can be as simple as a recent case where the cat had moved to the area and had lost its bearings or, in another instance, where the cat liked to wander but still went home regularly. However, by making these checks we can identify the genuine strays (like Joe who was mentioned last time). Whatever the circumstances, when dealing with strays, we always hold them for a short while just to make sure there is no owner out there.

Could Guide Dogs bank on you?

Are you interested in supporting people with a visual impairment in your community? Guide Dogs is searching for a key volunteer to complete their newly formed Cromer and Sheringham supporter group.

Daniel Ingram from Guide Dogs explains “The Banker role is hugely rewarding. Not only do you know you are helping make a positive difference to the lives of people in your local area, it is also a great way to meet others in your community, use existing skills or build new ones. If you enjoy keeping things organised this role will suit you. ”

You will play the important role of maintaining accurate records of funds raised and ensuring they are banked. You will also have the chance to help out at local events to be decided by the group such as social evenings, quiz nights, collections, and selling Guide Dogs items.

More than 180,000 people in the UK rarely leave home alone due to being blind or partially sighted. Guide Dogs is committed to enabling people who are blind or partially sighted to get out and about on their own terms. This group will raise funds and awareness to make this a reality.

Sue Dunn, Banker for a Guide Dogs group in Suffolk got involved when her husband lost his sight “I felt a need to do something due to the amount of money needed to provide a guide dog. I saw information regarding the local Guide Dogs group in the local paper and knew I could help. I feel a great satisfaction from knowing that I am making a difference to people’s lives. I’ve also had the chance to meet people who have similar interests to me and build community spirit in my local area.”

If you are interested in the role or joining the new group; contact Daniel on daniel.ingram@guidedogs.org.uk or 0118 983 8741. Visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/ volunteer for more information.

Blickling Proms celebrates WI Centenary with Norfolk Belles performance On Saturday 8 August, Last Night of the Blickling Proms will have more than one special anniversary to celebrate at its 1940s party.

Not only will it be marking the 75th anniversary of the Blickling Estate becoming part of the National Trust, but it will also be celebrating the WI Centenary with a very special performance by the Norfolk Belles.

The first WI meeting in the UK was held in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, Wales, on 16 September 1915. Since then, the organisation has grown to become the largest women's voluntary organisation in the UK with over 212,000 Members. It was set up to encourage countrywomen to get involved in growing and preserving food to help to increase the supply of food to the war-torn nation; education and the sharing of skills have always been at the heart of the WI and this remains true today.

The Norfolk Federation itself has 165 WIs with over 5000 members and continues to grow. In the run up to the centenary celebrations, the national federation launched a ‘Singing for Joy’ competition for all WI members and so the Norfolk Belles were formed. The choir has approximately 25 members led by professional musical director Margaret Collingwood. The singers come from across the county, some

were novices to begin with, others have been singing for years and they are ably accompanied by Matthew Bond. Practising 2-3 times a month, the choir is looking forward to some big performances in 2015, including joining the orchestra on stage at Last Night of the Blickling Proms to sing ‘Jerusalem’.

Lisa Ward from organisers, Revival Productions said “We are delighted that the Norfolk Belles have agreed to perform for us as ‘Jerusalem’ has a special significance for the WI and it’s one of the songs that attracts a very patriotic accompaniment from the crowd.”

Sally Paramour, a member of the Norfolk Belles and past Chairman of the Norfolk Federation said “It’s been great fun singing with the Norfolk Belles. We all enjoy getting together for rehearsals, either here at our headquarters in All Saints Green or at the Methodist Church in Chapelfield, and we’re really looking forward to joining the orchestra on stage at the Blickling Proms, it should be a great evening.”

have opened with members singing the anthem.

Thereis plenty to celebrate so come and join the party; the concert will be led by conductor Roderick Dunk with the Sinfonia Viva Orchestra. As well as having free parking (for both coaches and cars), guests can bring their flags, picnics and wine, dress for the occasion if they so wish and soak up the atmosphere with friends.

Those not wishing to bring their own picnics have the option to order food & drink in advance. H G Graves will be providing a delicious hog roast and Carluccio’s will be supplying all the hampers and there will also be a bar on-site.

So, don’t miss out! Tickets (£33 in advance or £36 on the night) and all event details are available at www.revival-productions.co.uk or you can call the box office on 01263 223500; group discounts of up to 20% are also available.

‘Jerusalem’ was taken up as the WI’s anthem after the copyright was passed on by the suffragette movement in 1928, after they had achieved their ambitions and women won the right to vote. Many WI meetings through the years

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER BARNHAVEN PRIMULAS

Every garden centre, superstore and market stall is currently full of primroses, polyanthus and primroses in their many forms. The appearance of trays of these highly coloured plants is a sure sign that we are leaving winter behind us. Every year the flowers seem to get bigger and the colours brighter. These plants certainly make an impact when planted in tubs or other containers but flowers with more subtle gradations of colour, and which more closely resemble the wild species from which they derive, are perhaps better choices for planting in the garden borders.

I have always been a great admirer of the Barnhaven Primroses originated by Mrs Florence Bellis (1906-87) in Oregon, USA , who dedicated years of work to hybridising these flowers. Mrs Bellis managed to produce plants in a rainbow of colours whilst retaining the richness of scent and the traditional primrose charms and elegance. Hardy in cold climates, winter blooming in mild these primroses bring a thrill, when after a grey winter, the fresh green leaves unfurl, the fat buds rise from the crown and the flowers open. Clean, brilliant, sparkling colour and soft, luxurious shades that fill the

CROMER FLOWER CLUB

surrounding air with scent that reminds some of violets, pansies and freesias.

The full story of the work of Florence Bellis is told in the latest edition of the RHS magazine ‘The Garden’ where there are also many pages of photographs of her wonderful creations but her story is an intriguing one which bears some repetition here. She began her work in the 1930s, in the depths of the Great Depression. She moved into a derelict barn on a sloping site alongside Johnson Creek in Gresham near Portland, Oregon naming her new home Barnhaven as she felt safe there. There was no electricity, just kerosene lamps. Legend has it that in 1935 she spent her last five dollars on packets of seeds from Suttons Seeds in England, including Munstead strain (developed by Gertrude Jekyll) and two of Sutton’ reds. From this beginning she produced ranges of plants such as ‘Grand Canyon – brilliant coppers, coffee, all spice – true browns of heavy crepe or velvet substance and often gold edged’ and ‘Indian Reds – clean, flaming scarlet, orient red, vermillion, crimson – stunning colours, violent as war paint’. I have just managed to buy a second hand copy of her book ‘Gardening and Beyond’ and in it she describes how, on a spring day at

A special guest attended the February meeting of Cromer Flower Club. This was Rose Peasgood who was presented with a cheque for £500 for the East Anglian Children’s Hospice. Each year the Club raises money for their annual charity, this year being the hospice’s Nook Appeal, with coffee mornings, jumble sales and Christmas sales.

Cromer Flower Club meets at the Junior School on the third Monday each month. New members and visitors are always welcome.

Barnhaven, ‘I sat on a footbridge over a creek and looked with stars in my eyes, at my first primroses blooming along its banks under the catkined alders’.

In 1966 Mrs Bellis announced that the time had come for her to ‘hang up her shovel and her hoe’. For the first time in over 30 years, the pollinating sheds at Barnhaven fell empty. However she decided to return her stock to England and she chose a couple who ran a nursery in Kendal, Westmoreland to continue her work. The nursery has changed hands several times since then and currently much of the supply of Barnhaven seeds and plants comes from Brittany. (www.barnhaven.com)

Primroses are very hardy and enjoy a situation under deciduous shrubs and trees, that give them full sun in winter and cool, summer shade. They prefer good soil that does not dry out in summer. Splitting plants every three or four years keeps them vigorous. You can divide immediately after flowering or in the autumn.

The work of Mrs Bellis and the other hybridisers have brought us a wonderful array of plants to brighten our spring gardens and it is worth looking beyond the mass displays in the various garden outlets for these more unusual primroses. Bob Wilkinson

NNDC Peer Review

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has recently undertaken a peer review for an independent, objective assessment of its performance, particularly focusing on economic growth and housing. The review found that NNDC is a strong and ambitious council which through innovation is improving services to benefit local residents and businesses whilst stimulating growth. It was also recognised that the council has a strong and visible political and managerial leadership with a clear strategic direction and alignment of resources. The government has removed the requirement for compulsory assessments. However, NNDC prides itself on improving performance and invited a peer team from the Local Government Association comprising of experienced councillors and officers from outside the area to undertake an open and transparent review. Particular praise was given to: • The council’s exemplary response and leading role in the 2013 storms which demonstrated strong community leadership and resilience. • The successful push on empty homes which is providing additional housing for residents. • Its commitment to working well with Town and Parish Councils, for example, the close liaison in response to the Fakenham fire in May 2014, flood relief and the storms of 2013 where the Council “moved heaven and earth”. • Being an ambitious council with a positive attitude for change and strong record of achievement by working in new ways. • The council’s spirit of innovation as evidenced by the eastlaw legal service which has been described by partners as “excellent” in providing in-house and external services. • Introducing a ‘housing incentive delivery scheme’ that works with developers to promote development and where appropriate, relax affordable housing requirements which has stimulated the number of houses built in the district. • Positively intervening to retain local businesses and their expansion requirements. A good example of this was the council’s support to the expansion of Kinnertons in Fakenham. This created 90 new jobs and new investment of £25m into the local economy. The purpose of the review was also to identify recommendations for improvement in the areas of economic growth and business transformation. Suggestions for improvement included: • Ensuring broadband in the district remains competitively fast and attractive for future investment. • Consideration to develop a distinctive place and brand that markets the area. • Whilst it was recognised that the economy of North Norfolk is comparatively strong, there are still considerations to improve this even further with an economic growth strategy. Chief Executive of NNDC, Sheila Oxtoby, said: “We welcome the findings from this review which helps to shape our plans for the future. It is gratifying that this independent review has found that we are a strong and ambitious council with some notable successes. These achievements haven’t happened by themselves and I would like to take this opportunity to thank both staff and members who have worked hard through challenging times.” The full peer review and findings will be published on the council’s website, www.north-norfolk.gov.uk

One-stop recycling comes to Thorpe Market!

St. Margaret’s Church started recycling paper over 30 years ago, storing it in the old stable and manually loading it on to the lorry. This was before the days of Landfill Tax rebates and it had to be sold on the open market, sometimes for very a meagre return.

SATCoL operates more than 6,500 clothing banks and over 200 charity shops across the UK and all donations of clean and dry shoes (in pairs), clothing, handbags, belts, bed linens, and blankets will be gratefully received.

The current Landfill Tax Rebate Scheme means that the church receives just over £50 for every tonne recycled, which represents a very important element in the survival strategy of our small village church, raising over £1,000 last year.

In recent years, we’ve also been recycling glass, following the local council’s suggestion that we install a glass-recycling bank.

Now that the car park has been refurbished, and there are no more potholes and puddles to dodge, we thought it would be a good idea to add a clothing bank to our collection and we warmly invite you to recycle your unwanted clothing and textiles at our new Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) clothing bank.

99% of everything that SATCoL collects is re-used or recycled, with up to 80% being re-worn. Each tonne of textiles that is not thrown away, prevents 3.6 tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions and reduces the amount of unnecessary waste sent to landfill.

Profit raised from donations also helps to fund The Salvation Army’s valuable work with

It is not often that the topic for one of our talks wanders far from the immediate area but the opportunity to hear about the work being done on a find of national importance was too good to miss. At our March meeting the topic in question was the discovery and analysis of the Staffordshire Hoard, the collection of over 3,500 objects uncovered by metal detectors in 2009. people who are vulnerable and in need across the UK, including homelessness and addiction services, care for older people, help at emergency incidents, support for adult victims of human trafficking and a Family Tracing Service. Over the last five years alone SATCoL has presented over £39.5 million to The Salvation Army.

Tom Richardson, area representative for SATCoL, said “We’re delighted to be working with St Margaret’s Church to encourage re-use and recycling within the community. We hope that the new clothing bank will provide local residents with an easy way to donate their unwanted clothes; it will help us raise millions of pounds for the work of The Salvation Army and divert waste from landfill.”

British Museum that examined the hoard, in particular the work of the goldsmiths who were responsible for decorating many of the objects. The hoard consisted mainly of items of military use.. Most of the finds were fragments of helmets, weapons, armour and pommel caps from swords but most had been decorated in some way with precious metals and semi-precious stones. Analysis of the hoard took five years and it is now on display at four centres in the West Midlands, including Birmingham Museum and Lichfield Cathedral.

Dr Blakelock’s focus was on the gold found in the objects. Anglo-Saxon gold was not particularly pure and was often mixed with silver and copper. Evidence suggested that some of the gold had been recycled from other objects such as coins and buckles. Most objects were made out of sheets of gold as it was very difficult to cast gold at this time. Multiple sheets wrapped around a copper alloy core were used to build up the objects. Fine strips of beaded wire known as filigree were used as decoration. Some objects were decorated by engraving and carving and garnets, ivory, shell, enamel and glass were added to enhance the appearance of many objects. It appears that those objects associated with men had a higher gold content than those made for women! What came across clearly from Dr Blakelock’s talk is the importance of scientific analysis in the task of explaining the significance of objects from the past, especially where little or no documentary evidence is available.

The final meeting for this season of talks will be on Friday 17 April at 7.30pm in the Community Hall in Cromer. The topic is the Great Yarmouth bridge disaster. Cost £2.50.

Council consults on development of Leisure Facilities Strategy

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) held the last of its planned consultation evenings earlier this month in Cromer to consult with stakeholders, including sports clubs, facility owners/management, individuals with a sporting interest and local members, regarding the development of its Leisure Facilities Strategy.

The Strategy is being developed to provide NNDC with options for future provision of sports and leisure facilities across the district.

Four consultation meetings have taken place in locations across the district, all of which have helped inform the development of the Strategy. Ensuring the Council has a strategy document in place is part of future service and budget planning and is essential if NNDC or local sports clubs are to apply for any external funding from organisations such as Sport England and the Lottery Fund.

Councillor Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Sports and Leisure Services, said “The final meeting, as with the other consultation meetings that we’ve undertaken, was very successful and encouraged plenty of useful, healthy debate.

“The information we have gained has been incredibly helpful to the Council and has ensured that we have a full understanding of what the current indoor sports provision is, and what the key issues for sport and recreation organisations are. This will help us plan for what is required over the next five to ten years”. Cromer Times 466 March 28th 2015

Are you friendly and outgoing?

Do you have a few hours to spare per month? You could change the life of a child or young person.

Date

28-Mar

Action for Children’s Norfolk Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers to befriend young people who are looked after by Norfolk Children’s Services and who have little or no contact with their families. Young people who are in care, experience huge change in their lives, can be very isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Volunteers act as adult role models and enable children to have someone who is outside of ‘the system’ in their life. Someone who is there just for them. Volunteers offer a listening ear, understanding, support and encouragement and have lots of fun in the process! Volunteers get to take their young person out on trips and visits to places such as the beach, cinema and zoo or they often simply have a kick around in the park or sit and chat together over a coffee. You don’t have to have experience to volunteer you just need to be committed to the improving the life of children and have some free time on a regular basis. For more information please contact Steph or Tracey at the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service on 01362 697537 or 07843345740 (Steph) / 07843345734 (Tracey), or e-mail: independentvisitors.norfolk@actionforchildren.org.uk Website: www.actionforchildren.org.uk
