Chance to lobby the government on later trains for North Norfolk Transport campaigners are calling on North Norfolk residents to take part in the latest Department for Transport consultation surrounding the East Anglia rail network.

The North Norfolk Labour Party, which earlier this year launched a petition for later trains on the Bittern Line, are calling on those who wish to see later trains in the district to respond to a new consultation launched this week. The findings of the Department for Transport consultation will feed into drawing up the contract for East Anglia's rail network in 2016.

Campaigners met with Greater Anglia in September who claimed that midnight trains from Norwich to North Walsham, Cromer and Sheringham could be possible - but only with a rethink from Network Rail which carries out maintenance on the lines overnight.

The Labour Party would also like to see the

new hourly service at weekends continue beyond 2016, more capacity on trains at busier periods - particularly on Norwich City match days, and the inclusion of Worstead and Gunton in more train services.

Denise Burke, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "This consultation takes into account views on all of the train lines in the East of England and so we should not miss this opportunity to feed in our views on the Bittern Line too.

Hundreds of residents signed our petition earlier this year for later trains from Norwich to North Norfolk and this is a good opportunity to ensure it features on the specifications of a future contract.

Local Author wins Book of the Month Award

Bretwalda Books recently announced that their Independent Panel of Readers have chosen "Douglas Bader" by Norfolk-based historian Michael Evans, who lives just outside Cromer, to be November's Book of the Month.

The book is a biography of heroic RAF fighter pilot Douglas Bader who fought throughout the Battle of Britain despite having lost both his legs in an earlier aircraft crash.

Without doubt the most famous RAF fighter ace of World War II, Douglas Bader joined the air force in 1928, but was invalided out after an horrific crash in 1931 cost him both his legs.

After learning to walk and fly again, Bader rejoined the RAF in 1939, fighting over Dunkirk and in the Battle of Britain. In the later stages of the Battle, Bader played a leading role in the “Big Wing Controversy” that continues to divide military experts to this day.

Editorial Director Rupert Matthews says “There was some stiff competition in November from other books that we have out. In the end our Independent Panel of Readers settled on the biography of Douglas Bader. It is a worthy winner indeed. My congratulations to author Michael Evans.”

Ambulance response times better in October but targets still missed Ambulance response times in North Norfolk showed signs of improvement in October, but campaigners have warned that the figures have significantly varied since April, and that the service is still a long way off reaching important targets.

In October 2014 50pc of Red 1 category calls in North Norfolk were answered within the 8 minutes target - up from 42.42pc in September.

37.84pc of Red 2 category calls were answered within eight minutes slightly up from the 36.42pc in the previous month.

Act on Ambulances campaigners however are warning that the long-term picture still does not look as 'rosy' with the figures significantly missing the 75pc target and figures varying in the months between April and October.

There are also fears that there could be a reduced performance over winter - the busiest time of year for the NHS - with a number of concerning stories appearing in the press over the last month.

Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour's parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said "We welcome the news that October's figures have moved in the right direction - this offers some peace of mind for residents as we enter the coldest period of the year.

However the figures for the past six months have not been as rosy and there is a varying picture. There are already warnings about ambulance response times and A&E demand during the winter snap which could have an impact on figures in the coming months.

As we come to the end of the year I would like to pay particular tribute to the ambulance crews who have worked with great dedication and passion all year round.

We will continue to monitor the figures for North Norfolk, but we have our fingers crossed that the measures implemented will continue to have a positive impact."

Christmas is nearly upon us and we are very busy with Christmas parties, and our Christmas Day Luncheon is fully booked.

We do have a few places left in our restaurant for our New Years Eve Dinner but my advise is to book as soon as possible because I am certain they will not be available for very long.

New Years Eve is also our Party in the Bar with Chris Wilson performing a blend of rock and blues featuring the songs of Buddy Holly and Paolo Nutini creating a rich musical treat with songs from the 50s to today and an ideal way to see in the New Year. We are already planing our menus for the new year and will be announcing this very shortly.

Ingredients 400g Fresh Cranberries 240g Caster Sugar 3 tbsp Cherry Brandy 75ml Water 3 Bay Leaves Lemon Juice (optional)

Method Place all the ingredients in a nonstick pan and simmer on a low heat until the sauce thickens.

If you find the sauce to sweet add a squeeze of lemon juice.

Allow to cool and serve as required.

Meet the Pastons: 400 Years of Norfolk History Revealed Through the Paston Letters’That is the title of a 10-week course on Wednesday mornings, starting on 14 January at 10am and given by Dr. Robert Knee, chairman of the Paston Society at the Cottage, Louden Road, Cromer.

The Pastons rose to prominence on the death of Sir John Fastolf (who is partly reflected in Shakespeare’s character Falstaff). Controversy followed as recorded by this vast and precious collection of letters.

Judge William Paston had secured the manors of “Cromere, Schypden and Ropers” with his wife Agnes, inheriting a life interest on the death of her husband. They owned 8

many other manors in Norfolk and there will be an opportunity to visit Paston places in Norwich. At times, Dr. Knee will wear the costumes of the various Pastons to present his course.

Suffield community to benefit from North Norfolk supporting Suffield Village Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s long term Big Society Fund grant future. I hope that the upgraded facilities will Suffield residents can now enjoy a much improved village hall thanks to a ÂŁ2000 grant from North Norfolk District Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (NNDC) Big Society Fund.

Suffield Village Hall now benefits from improved heating, lighting and cooking facilities following a successful grant application from its Committee.

The hall had previously been heated by Calor gas units. As well as being insufficient to heat the hall, they were difficult to light and were

a potential fire risk. The lighting was also identified as being insufficient, and while the kitchen area had been refurbished, it remained without a cooker, and therefore limited activities that the hall could be used for.

North Norfolk District Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Local Member for Suffield, Glyn Williams, said â&#x20AC;&#x153;Village halls contribute a great deal to the wellbeing of our local communities and North Norfolk District Council is delighted to have been able to play a part in

encourage many more local residents to make the most of their village hall.â&#x20AC;?

As a result, on Monday 8th December, Roger Percival and Michael Elsom from the Rotary Club of Holt and District attended a Gresham’s chapel service to make the presentation. During the service they thanked Gresham’s pupils and staff for their support in raising such a generous sum of money and presented the school with a cheque for £730.

Probus Christmas Celebrations

On 2 December members of Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS Club met for their annual Christmas lunch at the Links Hotel, West Runton.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER NEPAL EXPEDITION 2014

and, as very few of the plants had enough flowers remaining to confirm identification, some surprises too.

Earlier in the year I mentioned that I had helped to sponsor a plant hunting and seed collecting expedition in Nepal by a team of expert botanists and gardeners. The plant hunters are now safely home and I have received a copy of their travel diary and a share of the seeds they collected.

Their story contains many highs and lows but they did manage to collect seed from 95 unusual alpine plants. It was a hard and sometimes difficult trek and many of the ripe seeds were in extremely small amounts but my 25 packets contain many interesting varieties and I hope to grow some lovely new things

The expedition started in Kathmandu where the group took a light plane and flew into a small airstrip in the Eastern Himalayas. After two long bumpy days on a twisty mountain road their jeep reached a slightly run-down hostel at the end of a muddy pot-holed track. It was traditionally furnished, with horse hair mattresses and the traditional hole–in-the-floor toilet.

They then started the trek along remote trails on which they did not see another tourist and climbed a very rough and rocky pathway following a glacial torrent. They first saw an impressive stand of hedychiums but whilst collecting seeds they found their bare legs covered in leeches. This was the last day they wore shorts! They next encountered a venomous snake which the sherpas drove off with rocks while warning the group that this species could in fact fly at them.

One night they slept on straw mats and mattresses filled with yak hair on the porch of a local house. One member was woken by what he thought was someone stroking his hand but it was a rat and he had also been bitten by bed bugs.

However they also spent happy days taking photos in the thin mountain air and on climbing still higher found a plateau and lake which despite the heavy grazing of yaks held a treasure trove of fabulous flowers. Sheets of the rare Gaultheria trichophylla clung to the large boulders displaying clusters of ultramarine berries, contrasting prettily with the pillar-box red fruits of the equally prostrate Cotoneaster glacialis. There were also seed heads on the plants of the blue Himalayan poppy and also yet another treasure, Rheum nobile, the ‘Noble Rhubarb’, an alpine gardeners dream.

Finally they climbed above the levels where the yaks grazed and suddenly there were the plants that they had dreamed about and only seen in photos including the rare and incredible Megacodon stylophorus, the ‘Dinosaur Gentian’. Only a small number of seeds could be collected of this plant but everyone who sponsored the expedition has received in their parcel a few precious seeds together with seeds of the poppy and rhubarb varieties mentioned above.

The instructions recommend that all the seeds be sown immediately onto peaty compost with some loam and grit mixed in. No extra fertiliser is needed. The seeds are then to be covered very thinly with grit or fine gravel, watered and kept cold in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse until spring when most should germinate.

Many plants they found had no flowers or other clues to identify them exactly (one packet is labelled ‘Red-Berried Creeping Plant’) and the sponsors have been asked to feed back information on plants they manage to get to flower. Norwich Half-marathon

Why was I in a campervan on Sunday 23 November, in torrential rain on my way to the Norfolk Showground with my friends Jim and Glo Begley and their dog Tulip?

We were on our way to support Ivan Allen, another friend who was running in the Norwich half-marathon to raise funds for the Overstrand and Cromer First Responders. Since the responders are donation dependent we have formed a new group of Friends to raise funds and awareness of their work.

It rained all the way to Norwich and had not stopped when we arrived. We followed the queue of cars into the field which doubled as a car park, congratulating ourselves that we were there in plenty of time for the start of the race. We had taken the campervan intending to return to it after watching the runners start before watching them finish, November not being the best month for a picnic outside.

The cars ahead of us spun their wheels a bit whereas we, carrying more weight, got stuck.

The camper was eventually towed out of the mire by cheerful, helpful car parking assistants and we were told to take the campervan to the nearest park and ride.

Glo, Tulip and I jumped out and Jim drove away. We decided to head to the start line and wait for him there.

We arrived at the start line to find a sea of people, most of whom were carrying umbrellas.

Several miserable minutes later, looking for Jim or even Ivan, our soggy athlete, seemed impossible. "Let's find shelter" said Glo, so off we trudged, squelching and sliding, heading back to the main entrance gate. After half an hour I asked another dripping racegoer where the park and ride was and if it had its own entrance. "Oh it does," she cheerfully said, "it's over there" - pointing in the opposite direction, through the driving rain, "there are lots of entrances to the showground." Glo looked at me and I looked at Glo. Tulip looked at the puddles and her muddy, furry feet.

Without a word we walked back to the finish line and from there, to the halfway point still looking for Jim. "Has he got a hood on his hi-vis jacket?" I asked Glo having seen a likely suspect. "No" she replied. After looking under umbrellas, rain hats and bowed heads we finally saw him - with his hood up!!! He had seen Ivan at the start and told him that we would see him at the halfway stage and would have a surprise for him there. The surprise was a banner we'd made. "GO IVAN GO!" it said in huge black letters. Most of the runners looked at our wet banner as they went past, hair slicked down, running shorts and vests clinging to them, trainers sodden. Then we saw

Ivan - halfway past already, the only one with his head down, concentrating too hard to see us and our jaunty message.

"How far away is the camper?" asked Glo. "Twenty minutes or so" replied Jim. "I want to go there" Glo replied, and Tulip and I agreed.

Once there, Glo handed me the biggest roll of paper towels I'd ever seen and said to Tulip, "Auntie will wipe your feet now". Glo then wrapped her in a fleece and brewed some hot chocolate. By the time Jim came back we were fed and thawing out. Jim was too wet and cold to want to stay to eat his own lunch so we headed straight off home.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

As we approach Christmas once again it’s time to reflect on what has happened this year. At the time of writing we have had 245 cats and kittens in care this year, with 192 having been found loving new homes?

Our latest arrivals joined us on 6th December, a lovely little black cat with her six 10 day old black kittens, now safely tucked up in a pen with Kelly whose children are delighted to see the new arrivals. During the year we have lost 3 cats, 2 were kittens with serious health problems and the other cat Max, 19 years old, had been in the home of his fosterer as a Golden Oldie, enjoying the benefits of being in a home but with support from the branch for medical bills.

Several of the cats in care have needed dentals which made for happier cats, while others have had major surgery : cats like Billie, eye removed, Patsy, bladder operation, Duchess, tail removed and Not, whose foot was amputated and who will need further surgery when she is older. When cats come in from outside situations or multi cat households we also do blood tests to check for FIV/FELV and if the initial tests come back “positive” they are re-tested at an external laboratory. Thankfully only three cats were initially positive, one coming back negative from the external source. The two FIV positive cats are now happily settled in indoor homes. Because our fosterers follow the guidelines laid down by Cats Protection we are able to contain any infections and generally all our cats have happy and healthy lives while in care.

Our fundraisers have been very busy this year, not only at our major events but also selling at car boots, table top sales, street collections and on line to help fund the work we do. Two of our ladies, Barbara and Valerie who do not live in our area, deserve a special mention as they have raised over £1000 at events in their area and came to our Christmas Sale where they ran the jewellery stall.

New flood defence projects

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the announcement that plans are being developed for over 1,000 new flood defence projects around the country, worth a total of £2.3bn.

10 of the schemes announced are located in North Norfolk. The projects are still in the planning stages, and they would cost over £14m in total, protecting nearly 1200 homes across the District. Each of them will need to receive final approval for the business case before work could start.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “This announcement is really encouraging, and fantastic news for Norfolk. These projects are still in the planning stages, and I will be monitoring them closely to ensure that good progress is made. It is particularly encouraging to see a significant proposal for the section of coast from Bacton gas terminal to Ostend included in today’s schemes, reinforcing the commitment I secured recently for urgent work to be done to explore ways to protect residents in Ostend. We need to make sure that work is done over the coming months to develop plans, and I will be holding a further meeting with ministers early next year so that all of the organisations involved can report back on the progress they have made.”

Following popular demand after the success of the event over the last three years, Revival Productions are delighted to announce that on Saturday 8 August 2015, Blickling Estate will again be playing host to a grand, British Proms spectacular; an evening full of fun and nostalgia. many estates were saved rather than being broken up, and whole houses and their contents could be donated to the nation intact, in place of death duties. The Blickling Estate was the first of all the major properties to be left to the National Trust in this way.

The Grace Spitfire will introduce the evening with a choreographed routine to Ron Goodwin’s “Battle of Britain” which will then lead in to other well-loved music from the era including “Moonlight Seranade” by Glenn Miller, the main theme from “Gone with the Wind”, “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” and “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn. The second half will include all the traditional proms favourites like the British

Norman Lamb presents prize to winner of his Christmas card competition

At the start of the Autumn term, local MP Norman Lamb wrote to over 60 schools across North Norfolk inviting students to enter his 2014 Christmas Card design competition. He asked for the design to be based on 'Christmas in North Norfolk'. Norman received hundreds of entries, with a wide variety of designs.

Earlier this month Norman Lamb visited Sidestrand Hall School to present a prize to the winning design. The talented winner, Jake Ellis, will have his Rudolph artwork featured on Norman Lamb’s Christmas cards for this year.

During his visit to Sidestrand Hall School, Norman Lamb revealed that he has produced 2000 cards this year and will be spending most of this weekend signing them!

Norman Lamb sends out a Christmas card every year to people who have helped him to do his work as local MP, including many of the organisations that work with his North Walsham team to resolve the problems that constituents raise with him every day. Picking the winning design was a real challenge, and I enjoyed looking through everyone’s drawings with my wife, Mary and the team in North Walsham. We all agreed that Jake’s design was both festive and funny!

I send Christmas cards each year, as a way to say thank you to all those people who have helped me stand up for North Norfolk during the year. But I am incredibly grateful to all those who show their support for me throughout the year, and there are many more people to whom I would like to say thank you!”

Mrs Hodge used her speech to explain further the work she does on the Public Accounts Committee and also the impact that corporations avoiding tax has on small businesses across the country.

Speaking on Small Business Saturday she cited the success of local independent book publishers SALT Publishing, but she expressed concerns that other small publishers had been less successful because of companies like Amazon not paying their fair share of tax.

She believed Britain had become a ‘tax haven’ under the current government and said that if the Labour Party clamped down on corporations like Starbucks and Google in a future government more money would be raised to pay for services. She said she was unconvinced that a "Google tax" unveiled in the Autumn Statement was enough.

Margaret Hodge was joined by Hywel Lloyd from the Labour Coast and Country group which is pushing for a ‘rural-proofed’ manifesto that works for both urban areas, rural areas, and coastal areas too.

Hywel spoke about the need for better transport links in North Norfolk and across the county, and for policies that improve living standards in both city and rural areas too – particularly in the areas of education and health.

Denise Burke, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk and the chair of the local Labour Party, said “This year’s Christmas Party was even bigger than the last with a great turnout for our two key speakers. With the General Election just five months away we are now all geared up to hitting the doorsteps and spreading the word of the great work that both Margaret and Hywel are doing across the country.”

STREET LIGHTS

It has been agreed that over the next five years, phased works will take place in order that the street lights owned by Cromer Town Council will be switched off after midnight. A risk assessment will be carried out on each light and residents will be notified in writing shortly before the works in their street are to take place.

CROMER HONOuRS AWARDS

The Cromer Town Council Award Scheme to recognise significant achievement by an individual, or group, enters its 18th year. So far well over 100 people or groups have received the awards, which are presented by the Mayor of Cromer at the Annual Town Meeting. Every year one hears of work or a deed being done within our community which enhances the quality of life in our town or of its inhabitants.

Much of this work by its very nature, goes largely unrecognized and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. Any person, young or old, and group or organisation, is eligible to be considered.

The Council is looking towards anyone who has made a significant contribution to the quality of an individual, or wider community life in Cromer, during the last year.

If you know someone, a group or organisation, who you feel should be considered for an honour, please contact the Town Council office for a nomination form which must be completed and returned to the Town Clerk by noon on 27 February 2015.

Beachrunner John's Marathon Fundraising

North Norfolk Beachrunner John Battrick, 24, has been invited to take on the challenge of running in the London Marathon in April 2015, to raise money for the charity Breaks for Kids.

The charity, managed by The Youth Hostels Association, gives financial support to disadvantaged children, to enable them to take part in school trips and outdoor adventure breaks.

John, from Gresham and currently working for the YHA, said, “This charity means a lot to me. I provide the catering for large groups of disadvantaged kids at Patterdale YHA and I experience firsthand the impact and difference these breaks make to young lives. Any support to help me reach my £1000 target will be greatly appreciated.”

John is no stranger to fundraising and challenges. At the age of 17, John and his father Peter climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, raising over £1000 for a local cancer charity and at university he continued to fundraise for various charities.
