RISING TOWARD CAREER SUCCESS
2023–2024 ANNUAL REPORT
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As the Chief Career Services Officer at Rutgers—New Brunswick, I am delighted to share the annual report of the Office of Career Exploration and Success (CES). This year has been transformative, with CES making remarkable strides in building a campus-wide career ecosystem and setting the stage for our roadmap to 2030.

In the 2023-24 academic year, CES has engaged 74% of the undergraduate and graduate population. Our Net Promoter Score (NPS) reached an “excellent” classification, reflecting strong student loyalty. Additionally, 25% of students utilized two or more resources, and 88% felt our offerings significantly contributed to their career journeys. The Class of 2023 post-graduation success rate reached nearly 90%.
A standout achievement this year was our career and internship fairs, with record attendance from both students and employers. These fairs created invaluable networking opportunities and showcased a diverse array of employers, meeting our goals for inclusivity and industry representation.
Our programs aimed at helping students explore career opportunities and secure internships flourished. We enrolled 1,683 first-year students in the First-year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) and connected over 130 students with job shadowing opportunities. The 4WARD Career Pathways Program saw 85% of its third-year participants securing internships. The Rutgers Summer Service Internship (RSSI) Program continued to support career development at non-profit organizations.
Our staff presented at numerous conferences, sharing best practices and innovative approaches, fostering professional growth and collaboration with other institutions.
Looking ahead, we are excited to announce two new positions next year: one for reimagining the student employment experience on campus and another for strengthening our partnerships with graduate student programs.
Our achievements have been recognized by campus partners and associations, highlighting the dedication of our CES staff. Despite challenges, the CES team has remained resilient and innovative. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the CES team and our campus partners for their unwavering support in fostering positive career outcomes for our Scarlet Knights.
William (Wil) Jones Jr. Executive Director, Career Exploration and Success

This online credit-bearing course complements internship and co-op work experiences. RICC course instructors help students navigate through issues in the work environment and reflect on their work experiences.
Rutgers Scarlet Service Internship Program (RSSI)
RSSI provides summer internship experiences to undergraduate students at public service-oriented non-profit organizations and direct-service government offices while expanding their knowledge and skills to engage as active citizens. Students receive a stipend and participate in a credit-bearing companion course fostering reflections on their experiences.

Rutgers Handshake is the main CES career management system and virtual career center. Students and alumni can request appointments with career advisors, register for workshops, apply for jobs and internships, schedule interviews, and access these online career resources.
Big Interview and Resume Review
This platform allows users to practice interview skills online and receive AI resume review feedback.
GoinGlobal
Students use country and city guides to learn about diverse options for international employment and academic opportunities and about domestic living and work environments.
Student-Alumni Career Connect System
Students connect with Rutgers alumni who are willing to provide career advice. Platform features include a searchable database, alumni career information, video conferencing, and group career community discussion boards.

The Career Discovery Unit is dedicated to guiding students through the initial stages of their career journeys. Its primary objective is to assist them in discovering their interests, skills, and values, while facilitating the exploration of potential career pathways to inform future decision-making.
• CES offered 78 course sections of the First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) in 40 topics, serving 1,683 students. According to evaluations (79.5% response rate), students highly rated both the Peer Instructors’ teaching effectiveness (4.81/5) and the overall quality of the courses (4.4/5). • The FIGS program offered the inagural Faculty Mentor Orientation event to welcome faculty who will be serving as mentors for the new Peer Instructor cohort. Faculty mentors serve a pivotal role in helping Peer Instructors connect their unique topics to meaningful in class activities.
2,649
Students prepared for career fairs by our fair prep programs

CES ENGAGEMENT
ASSESSMENT MEASURES UTILIZED IN THIS REPORT
Career Exploration and Success (CES) views the usage of data to drive effectiveness as an integral protocol acknowledged in the department’s “Smart Operating Practices” core value. The department utilizes a variety of methods to assess the outcomes illustrated in this report.
Campus Advisory Groups
CES employs the assistance of various student, campus partner, and employer advisory groups to explore multiple topics relevant to our mission. These groups have provided feedback on marketing efforts, new website proposals, recruiting services, advising resources, mentoring programs, and more. This year our career interest and career community advisory boards held 47 meeting sessions with 183 advisory group participants to discuss current and new initiatives to further assist with the career success of our students and alumni.
Rutgers—New Brunswick Post-Graduation Survey
The post-graduation survey collects information about recent graduates’ post-graduation status, employment or graduate school admissions information, and campus experiences. 30 committee members from each academic school collaborate to ensure the data collected is useful to all academic partners. Information is collected at the time of graduation for each of the August/October, January, and May cohorts and for the subsequent six months as per NACE standards. Information on 9,344 students from the Class of 2023 was included in this report, accounting for approximately 80% of the total 11,618 graduates.
Satisfaction and Outcome Surveys
Satisfaction surveys are distributed after students and alumni engage in CES programming. Workshop and advising appointment surveys utilize a reflective pre-test followed by a post-test approach to assess outcomes. Satisfaction feedback from our career fairs, interviewing program, and special events also provides valuable insight
and is integrated into staff performance reviews. Data is also imported into an outcomes dashboard and used by CES management for team assessment and future department planning.
Service Utilization Reports
Monthly recruiting, programming, and online tools tracking data is collected throughout the year and helps CES to assess usage, plan future marketing efforts, determine upcoming selected programs and services, and manage staffing needs for events and services.
Utilization, Preferences, Impact, and Perceptions
Annual Student Survey
The annual undergraduate random sample student survey helps CES to obtain information on service utilization and preferences, marketing impact and awareness, and department perceptions. CES collects this data utilizing a randomized stratified sampling method to allow generalization of results to the entire population within a certain margin of error. In Spring 2024 a Qualtrics survey was sent out to a stratified random sample of 3,800 undergraduate students. Data was collected during April and May 2024. A total of 382 responses was received. The survey had a 5.0% margin of error at the 95% confidence interval level.
