CAREER EXPLORATION AND SUCCESS

PURSUING CAREER SUCCESS

2022–2023 ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am honored to serve the team at the Office of Career Exploration and Success (CES) as the Chief Career Services Officer at Rutgers—New Brunswick. As a central campus unit, CES has made significant progress in developing a campus-wide career ecosystem, forging partnerships with students, academic schools, campus departments, and employment organizations. Our staff actively participated in workstreams for the Discovery Advantage plan, conducting focus groups and drafting recommendations to better serve our students’ career needs. Collaborative endeavors through advisory boards, councils, and committees (see page 21), including the annual Campus Partner Breakfast, engaged faculty and staff across various areas. Notably, our new Career Advocacy and Professional Inclusion Initiative thrived, with the facilitator recognized as the campus partner of the year by two departments.

We provided nationally-recognized, equitable resources for all Rutgers—New Brunswick students, engaging with nearly 75% of the current undergraduate and graduate population this year. Our return to in-person career and internship fairs created valuable opportunities for employers to connect with a record number of candidates. The career community approach to service delivery addressed diverse student interests and challenges through specialized advising, impactful programs, and tailored communications. Initiatives such as the Rutgers Summer Service Internship Program, Rutgers Internship & Co-op Course, First-year Interest Group Seminars, and the Road to Industry Program experienced increased participation, providing vital support to students in need.

Our team’s achievements were recognized by campus partners, regional, national, and Big Ten associations, highlighting the impact of our dedicated CES staff. While this report captures many highlights, it cannot fully convey the positive sentiments shared by students, alumni, campus partners, and employers through our “Some CES Good News” MS Teams channel—an inspiring testament to our profound partnerships.

Despite challenges in FY23, I commend the CES team for their unwavering dedication to student success and innovation. We navigated staff vacancies while celebrating retirements and career advancements. And we created and cultivated innovative solutions to the modern challenges of the day. I extend my gratitude to the Career Exploration and Success team and our campus partners for their collaboration in supporting positive career outcomes for our Scarlet Knights and submit to you this report of our annual highlights.

SERVICES SUPPORTING CAREER OUTCOMES SUCCESS

Career Exploration and Success implements programs and services to positively impact the post-graduation outcomes of nearly 50,000 Rutgers University–New Brunswick and RBHS* students from all majors and career interests. Services are offered in-person and online to undergraduate and graduate students and alumni.

PREPARATION SERVICES

Career Advising Assistance

CES professional staff members provide career advising to eligible students and alumni. Meetings are tailored to students’ needs and cover topics including choosing majors, developing career plans, searching for jobs or internships, and applying to graduate schools. Drop-in resume and cover letter review sessions are also available to students through the virtual Career Studio.

Career Communities

CES developed and utilizes a nationally-recognized career development model focused on career interests at all stages of the journey toward industries and other post-graduate pursuits. This allows students to expand career opportunities and consider a larger array of options. Programs and marketing efforts are structured around these career interest communities.

Events & Programs

CES provides instructional programs where students can learn how to explore career options, network with alumni and employers, develop resumes, polish interview skills, and more. Students also participate in our many networking events and panel discussions.

First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS)

FIGS are one-credit seminars that introduce first-year students to university resources and career fields of their choice. Taught by experienced juniors and seniors, these classes are kept small to help incoming students connect with Rutgers and their peers.

Road to Industry Program (RTIP)

This multi-year high impact program connects students with alumni mentors to explore careers and industries through career cluster-specific programs. Students have opportunities to make connections and jumpstart their careers through a variety of fields.

Rutgers Internship & Co-op Course (RICC)

This online credit-bearing course complements internship and co-op work experiences. RICC course instructors help students navigate through issues in the work environment and reflect on their work experiences.

Rutgers Summer Service Internship Initiative (RSSI)

RSSI provides summer internship experiences to undergraduate students at public service-oriented non-profit organizations and direct-service government offices while expanding their knowledge and skills to engage as active citizens. Students receive a stipend and participate in a credit-bearing companion course fostering reflection on their experience.

On-Campus Work Experience Network (OWN)

OWN is a unique and customized program that supplements Federal Work-Study job placements. Interactive leadership workshops help students explore connections to potential careers and strengthen professional skills. In addition to leadership workshops OWN participants are paired with supervisors who have agreed to serve as mentors dedicated to student success.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION

Career development and experiential education emphasizes self-discovery, the development of career competencies and life skills by engaging in high-impact experiences, reflections on high-impact experiences, and the enhancement of confidence in the ability to articulate skills and competencies to employers.

• In fall 2022, CES’s First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) offered 70 course sections in 34 topics, serving 1,620 students. According to course evaluations (91% response rate), students highly rated both the Peer Instructors’ teaching effectiveness (4.75/5) and the overall quality of the courses (4.5/5). Students also positively evaluated the effectiveness of the in-class CES presentations (8.2/10).

• Two new Assistant Directors joined the First-Year Career Engagement team and began the process of updating the program timeline.

• The four fall 2022 Peer Instructor Education course evaluations (94.2% response rate) showed students evaluated the course effectiveness highly (4.61/5). The FIGS team ran the inaugural fall selection process in 2022, yielding a cohort of 83 Peer Instructors for fall 2023. Those students completed the 3-credit Peer Instructor Education course in spring 2023. Mid-term assessments in those 6 sections indicated that these changes positively impacted Peer Instructor preparation.

• CES continued its partnership with Academic Services and the shared commitment to connecting with all incoming transfer students by providing 78 career presentations in the Students in Transition Seminars (STS). In addition, CES career advisors provided 608 “STS Career Advising”

appointments for STS students. STS students also participated in 130 CES sponsored workshops, programs, and employer events.

• The Rutgers Summer Service Internship (RSSI) Program, in partnership with the Rutgers Newark and Camden career centers, completed its inaugural year with 94 students in the summer 2022 cohort. One student from the inaugural RSSI cohort, Maddison Van Der Mark, was recently named a Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation winner, partly for her work in the RSSI Program.

• In summer 2023 RSSI was expanded to provide paid summer internships in public service to 126 students. More than 360 students from Camden, Newark, and New Brunswick applied. All student applications were reviewed by the RSSI Student Selection Committee, comprised of 64 faculty and staff members from all three campuses. In summer 2023, the RSSI Program will provide first internship experiences to 75% of the cohort, which is an increase from 68% of the 2022 summer cohort.

The summer 2023 participants will complete their paid internships in non-profit or direct service government settings and their 3-credit companion internship course.

• The Rutgers Internship and Co-op Course (RICC) was offered in partnership with the Rutgers School of Arts & Sciences. RICC enrolled 219 students in 12 internship or

co-op sections, compared to 201 students in 9 sections last year. Each semester had at least one delayed start option to maximize enrollment and accessibility to students. RICC curriculum assignments were updated to offer a stronger connection to career readiness competency building, a more consistent approach to goal-setting, and more indepth approaches to professional development. Students who have unpaid internships at for-profit organizations may be eligible for stipends through the Bright Futures Internship Stipend.

• CES expanded advising capacity by offering advising services with three graduate counseling interns and four Virtual Career Studio undergraduate peer career coaches. The Virtual Career Studio leveraged peer-topeer connections in a drop-in/no appointment required virtual format. The graduate counseling interns (752 appointments) and peer career coaches (239 visits) engaged with 991 students. Overall, the CDEE unit members, including three professional staff, three graduate interns and four peer career coaches saw a total of 2,220 students in appointment and career studio settings. Removing resume appointments from advisors’ schedules and encouraging students to visit the Career Studio for resume reviews was a successful initiative implemented mid-year that resulted in decreased wait times for students.

2,220

Students served in career advising appointments with the CDEE unit

• The Undecided and Exploratory Advisory Board was launched this year, which focuses on building relationships and collaborations with campus partners working with the related student populations (first-year, transfer, and undecided students). Members were selected and the group planned future collaborations.

• Nine career fair prep programs (two in-person resume clinics, five virtual resume clinics, and two virtual “How to Prep for a Career Fair” workshops) were offered before the fall and spring Mega Fairs. This effort prepared 1,300 students to successfully navigate the events.

• The Intern for a Day (IFaD) program created opportunities for students to spend one day with employers to learn about their organizations and career opportunities. During spring break 267 students representing all class years and CES career communities participated, in-person or virtually, with 122 employer volunteers.

• Alumni engagement was increased through a large Career Exploration Night across all career communities. 141 students explored careers and industries while meeting with 36 alumni from their career areas of interest to explore opportunities. Also, 63 alumni were confirmed to be mentors for our Road to Industry Program and met with their mentees monthly.

CAREER COMMUNITIES AND CAMPUS

PARTNERSHIPS

CES’s Career Communities strategy for service offerings is a means by which students have opportunities to explore a wide range of careers by industry pathways and interest areas. We encourage students to select up to five career communities of interest. This allows students to gain access to specialized events, job/internship postings, alumni mentors, post-graduation career outcomes, news, designated career advisors, and more. Career communities also support staff specialization and enable staff to collaborate with campus partners to work toward a common goal across academic and departmental silos.

• The Career Communities and Campus Partnerships unit delivered programming and advising appointments specific to the needs of each of the 12 Career Interest Communities (CICs). Over 4,200 attendees participated in 63 career interest community-specific program offerings.

• CES’s 10 Career Student Communities (CSCs) continued to develop career resources and services for special protected populations (e.g., Students with Disabilities, Women, LGBTQ+) and other exploration groups (e.g., Doctoral Students, Military Veterans, International Students) that need support and tailored services. Over 550 students attended 24 CSC-specific program offerings.

• Following restrategization to ensure the most effective partnership engagement across all career communities (CICs and CSCs), CES managed 15 advisory boards that played a pivotal governance role in developing programming, initiatives, and website content for the career communities. The members of each advisory board consisted of faculty/staff, employers/alumni industry representatives, cross-functional CES staff, and student

leaders. The boards were also crucial for deepening campus relationships and fostering information sharing.

• The Road to Industry Program (RTIP), our long-term mentoring program, managed and engaged its second cohort of 60 students following a competitive application process. The First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) served as a feeder for this cohort, with specific attention paid to identifying qualified first-generation college students. The inaugural cohort from FY23 began the program’s second phase, during which they were paired with mentors, engaged regularly, and gained exposure to the world of work via CES’s Intern for a Day (IFAD) job-shadowing program. Both cohorts participated in a comprehensive training session, met with assigned Program Directors, and attended events tailored to their career pathways.

• The CCCP unit partnered with the Rutgers University Alumni Association’s Alumni Workplace Engagement team to plan student-alumni events, RTIP, and first-generation initiatives, as well as to deepen partnerships with organizations with large Rutgers alumni populations (e.g., Bristol Myers-Squibb, Prudential, Sanofi).

• The Career Interest Communities unit engaged with over 120 students while participating in resume critique drop-in hours for the School of Pharmacy, the School of Nursing, and the School of Communication and Information.

• Several training and professional development opportunities were held during the year with the Career Interest Communities unit including the Allerton Conference, NJC3 Conference, career coaching training, site visit to NFL films, and Zimmerli Art Museum and Cook Campus Farm tours.

• 11 community programs reaching over 350 students were facilitated by the Career Interest Communities unit including “Internships in the Health Professions,” “Medical School Admissions Interviewing,” “Internship/Job Search Strategies for STEM Positions,” “Dominate Your Interview for STEM Positions,” “Creative Careers for Creative People,” “Pursuing an Internship/Job in Corporate America with a Social Science Degree,” “Writing Personal Statements for Medical School and Graduate Programs,” “Internship/Job Search Strategies for STEM Positions,” “Pursuing an Internship/Job in Corporate America with a Social Science Degree,” “Dominate Your Interview for STEM Positions,” and “Behind the Screen: The Video Game Industry.”

• The Career Student Communities unit offered over 40 tailored advising sessions throughout the academic year to student populations at the Asian American Cultural Center, Center for Latino Arts and Culture, Center for Social Justice Education & LGBT Communities, Office of Disability Services, Paul Robeson Cultural Center, and Veterans House.

• Career Advocacy & Professional Inclusion initiatives were expanded and included participating in the October Disabilities Awareness Month, hosting the conversation “Grad Talks: A Conversation with Students with Disabilities about their Career Journeys,” creating “Making Career Decisions with your Values in Mind” resources available on the CES website, and managing outreach programs at three cultural centers: Center for Latino Arts and Culture, Center for Social Justice Education & LGBT Communities, and Paul Robeson Cultural Center.

• Four events were developed by the Career Student Communities unit reaching over 200 students including “Finding On-Campus Employment as an International Student,” “Navigating the Non-Academic Job Market,” “Mastering the Professional Within: Career Conference & Networking Hour for Master’s and Doctoral Students,” and “Beyond OPT: Visas After Graduation.”

INDUSTRY AND STUDENT CONNECTIONS

CES strengthens, expands, and diversifies recruiting relationships with organizations to maximize career opportunities for Rutgers University–New Brunswick students and graduates and generates support for the university’s academic mission from these important employer partners.

• Career and internship fairs were delivered in a hybrid format, offering six virtual and three in-person events. The multi-day fall and spring in-person fairs sold out to employers in record time, before the early bird registration deadlines, with 100+ organizations on a waitlist. The three in-person fairs attracted over 10,600 candidates and 750 organizations, as well as revenue exceeding $550,000. Utilizing a new platform, vFairs, our six virtual targeted fairs attracted 518 candidates and 288 employers, and generated approximately $74,000 in revenue.

• Virtual Employer Networking & Information Sessions remained a popular option for employers with a slight increase over the prior year. There was a total of 2,376 virtual events and 24 in-person on-campus sessions. These employer-hosted programs included skill-building workshops, coffee chats, tech talks, fairs, and general information sessions/presentations.

• Over 2,200 in-person connections were made with students and the Rutgers community by participating in marketing outreach events including Involvement Fair, Welcome Week Open House, Admitted Students Open House, two career conferences, JCPenney Suit-Up Shopping event, over 20 tabling events, Winter Orientation, and Rutgers Day.

• The 2022 post-graduation survey reached a career outcomes and knowledge rate of 82% and 67% respectively. The data collection process for the survey was improved with our front desk staff interns completing approximately 5,000 follow-up phone calls to recent graduates to assess career outcomes and the development of a new validation system.

• The generous support provided by Johnson & Johnson allowed our office to obtain two IRIS photo booths to provide students and alumni with free professional portraits. Prior to

obtaining these new machines, our office provided nearly 850 professional portraits during seven events.

• A custom matching algorithm application identified over 400 applicant and employer matches for the Rutgers Summer Service Internship Program (RSSI) and Internship for a Day (IFAD) initiatives.

CES ENGAGEMENT

ASSESSMENT MEASURES UTILIZED IN THIS REPORT

Career Exploration and Success (CES) views the usage of data to drive effectiveness as an integral protocol acknowledged in the department’s “Smart Operating Practices” core value. The department utilizes a variety of methods to report on outcomes illustrated in this report.

Campus Advisory Groups

CES utilizes the support of various student, campus partner, and employer advisory groups to explore multiple topics relevant to our mission. These groups provide feedback on marketing efforts, new website proposals, recruiting services, advising resources, mentoring programs, and more. This year our career interest and career community advisory boards held 64 meeting sessions with over 160 advisory group participants to discuss current and new initiatives to further assist with the career success of our students and alumni.

Rutgers—New Brunswick Post-Graduation Survey

The post-graduation survey collects information about recent graduates’ post-graduation status, employment, graduate school admissions information, and their campus experiences. A committee comprised of 27 members from each academic school collaborated to ensure the data collected is useful to all academic partners. Information is collected at the time of graduation for each of the October, January, and May cohorts and for the subsequent six months as per NACE standards. The 2022 graduation cohort included a total of 7,533 graduates participating in the survey, accounting for approximately 67% of the total 11,222 graduates.

Satisfaction and Outcome Surveys

Satisfaction and outcome surveys are distributed after students and alumni engage in CES programming.

Workshop and advising appointment surveys utilize a reflective pre-test followed by a post-test approach to assess outcomes. Satisfaction feedback from our career fairs, interviewing program, and special events also provides valuable insights and is integrated into staff performance reviews. Data is also imported into an outcomes dashboard and used by the CES management team for staff assessment and future department planning.

Service Utilization Reports

Monthly recruiting, programming, and online tools tracking data is collected throughout the year and helps CES to assess usage, plan future marketing efforts, determine upcoming selected programs and services, and manage staff engagement for events and services.

Utilization, Preferences, Impact, and Perceptions

Annual Student Survey

The annual undergraduate random sample student survey helps CES obtain information on service utilization and preferences, marketing impact and awareness, and department perceptions. CES collects this data utilizing a two-stage randomized stratified sampling method to allow generalization of results to the entire population within a certain margin of error. In Spring 2023 a Qualtrics survey was sent out to a stratified random sample of 7,484 undergraduate students. Data was collected during April and May 2023. Over 600 responses were received. The survey had a 5.0% margin of error at the 95% confidence interval level.
