WHAT IS SUMMER LEARNING?

In the move from ‘Summer Reading’ to ‘Summer Learning,’ we are working to encourage lifelong learning with fun experiences. Summer Learning will work to close the achievement gap by providing active learning experiences that are positive, educational, and fun! Struggling readers are more likely to participate in hands-on activities with experiential approaches. Experiential learning helps with reading comprehension because when students have experience with a topic, they relate to it more, and therefore comprehend it better. LIMIT OF 12 Designed to help students overcome their anxiety about writing by providing a step-by-step process, this program will give tips and strategies for finding ideas to write about, developing characters and plots, and revising. Our discussion will be led by Elizabeth Glass, an Appalachian Studies scholar and Emerging Artist Award in Nonfiction winner from the Kentucky Arts Council.
