The Holland Patent Central Class of 2020 had a graduation like no other in the school’s history as theirs was a virtual graduation due to COVID-19. On June 20th they completed the celebration with a parade.

With COVID-19 regulations there won’t be as much to do as most firework shows have been cancelled or postponed, like the Utica and Old Forge fireworks.

Many people will be turning to their own displays with the legal fireworks that are available for sale in area stores. But there is danger whenever you use fireworks.

A grant was given to the Holland Patent Chapter by the Pomeroy Foundation of Syracuse, New York.

Steve Grabowski holds a 21 inch walleye which he caught in June from Oneida Lake .

Steve boasted that he boated almost 150 Walleyes so far this season mostly on Oneida Lake but some on Lake Delta. “Usually I was jigging various lures and I’ll a have worm and spinner dragging as I drift.”

Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol is reminding residents that ground-based or hand held sparkling devices are the only types of fireworks that are legal to use in Oneida County. A 2014 change in New York State Penal Law and 2016 Oneida County Local Law allows for the sale and use of only a specific category of consumer fireworks known as “Sparkling Devices”. All other fireworks are still illegal in New York State. Sparkling Devices are ground based or hand-held devices that produce a shower of colored sparks and or a colored flame, audible crackling or whistling noise and smoke. The law limits the type, size and construction of Sparkling Devices and requires that these devices must be hand held or mounted on a base or spike and be limited in sizes that range from 1 to 500 grams of pyrotechnic composition. The sale and use of these sparkler devices is only permitted in Oneida County on or between June 1st and July 5th and December 26th and January 2nd and can only be purchased by those over the age of 18.

Over the last several weeks, law enforcement agencies in the county, including the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, have seen a significant increase in the number of fireworks related complaints. Nearly all of the complaints involve the use of Illegal fireworks that are not allowed under the local law. According to Sheriff Maciol, his office has received fireworks related complaints from local residents, town supervisors, and village mayors. Illegal fireworks typically are those that are lit or ignited from the bottom and produce explosion sounds, rise into the air and then explode, or project into the air. Examples of illegal fireworks include firecrackers, M80’s, flaming balls, bottle rockets, mortars, spinners, and roman candles. These types of illegal fireworks are in violation of the NYS Penal Law section 270.00 (class B misdemeanor) and depending on the time of day, can also be in violation of local municipal noise ordinances.

Sheriff Maciol would like to remind residents that they can report illegal fireworks related complaints via the non-emergency phone line for the law enforcement agency that primarily patrols their neighborhood. The non-emergency phone number for the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is 315-736-0141.

Even when using the legal sparkler devices, there is still danger involved and precautions are needed. Sheriff Maciol offers these common sense safety tips when using the devices allowed by law; SAFETY TIPS: • Always follow the directions located on the packaging • All sparklers are for outdoor use only, never use indoors • Always wear eye protection when using sparklers • Never light more than one sparkler at a time • Never point a sparkler tube towards anyone or any part of your body • Keep sparklers and novelty devices in a safe secure location when not in use • Never use sparklers when under the influence of alcohol or drugs • Always keep an approved fire extinguisher nearby during a display • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

• Douse malfunctioning and spent devices with water before discarding to prevent a fire • Purchase sparklers and novelty devices from NY State registered retailers FACTS: • Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 F • It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy or use sparklers in NY State • In 2013 there were 8 deaths and 11,400 reported injuries in the United States related to fireworks. Sparklers accounted for 31% of these injuries. Many of these injuries were to people under the age of 18.

South Trenton Cemetery Association News and History Shared This past week Mike Parker and fellow metaldetector enthusiast, Larry Ehlinger, assisted South Trenton Cemetery members in finding some survey boundary markers. The search area had been narrowed, but the posts were overgrown and hard to find.

Larry was successful in uncovering one post and it was fascinating to see how the discovery happened.

The methodical, tactical pursuit of the marker was a lesson in perseverance and patience.

As with many organizations generations old, history is often transferred verbally and sometimes lost.

Thankfully, detailed survey maps exist for each section

of the South Trenton Cemetery which was organized by early settlers between 1837 and 1865 and incorporated in 1882. It is managed today, as it has been since its inception, by an association of volunteers and is not affiliated with the Church.

Historically, before the 1830’s, formal cemeteries were rare, particularly in rural areas. Instead families buried their dead close to home as a matter of practicality. Cemeteries built after 1830 were designed to be park-like with beautiful monuments and pleasing horticultural. They were settings to encourage spirituality and concentration, and meant to make visitors reflect upon not just the mortality of those buried there, but individual mortality as well.

Grave markers of the 19th-century cemeteries often contained folded hands or angels, weeping willows, sleeping children or little lambs. They were meant to suggest a peaceful, gentle sleep. 20th-century markers are more often flat stones simply engraved with the names and dates upon them with perhaps a small image. 21st-century stones are being transformed by technology with detailed, personally-symbolic etchings incorporated with the names and dates.

Understanding the symbolism is an important element in learning about the people and the community they lived in, their religion, and their belief system. The stories on the headstones often provide a snapshot into the past and every cemetery tells a story of its community.

Maintaining a cemetery is an arduous endeavor.

Ground settlement, weather and the elements take their toll on even the best-architected, well-maintained cemeteries. Plantings in the cemetery not only add beauty and serenity to the space, but they also require routine care. At times, old or damaged trees need to be removed and the mowing

and trimming through the growing season consume precious monetary resources. Lack of funding for maintenance, and volunteers for management, are major challenges for most rural cemeteries. We encourage people to visit, to appreciate the beauty, consider the importance of preserving the cemetery, and perhaps even contribute to the cemetery’s upkeep and maintenance.

Building Permits Now Available

Public access to our Town Court System remains closed for now. Municipal Court opening dates are still pending.

There has been a hiatus on the issuance of Building Permits during the Pandemic. Now that things are beginning to open up the Codes Officer can now issue Building Permits for projects you would like to do. If you want to do a new project that requires a building permit or if you are not sure if your project does or does not require a permit please contact our Codes Officer – Ken Cutler – at 315-5342581 for further instructions.

Ticks and Lyme Disease We all need to be careful when we go out to do yard work, clean up or just a leisurely stroll through the woods. Below are some helpful hints regarding ticks and Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease and other Tick-borne Diseases The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and local health departments continue to investigate the spread of Lyme disease throughout New York State. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected deer tick. Untreated, the disease can cause a number of health problems. Patients treated with antibiotics in the early stage of the infection usually recover rapidly and completely. Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have now been confirmed in New York State.

The NYSDOH and local health departments also investigate several other tick-borne diseases, including babesiosis, ehrlichiosis (both human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human monocytic ehrlichiosis) and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These tick-borne diseases are most frequently found on Long Island and in the lower Hudson Valley region. The number of cases of these diseases is much smaller in comparison to the cases of Lyme disease but their numbers are also increasing.

Unity Hall Presents Singer/Songwriter E.E. Norris In Virtual Concert Series Saturday, July 11, 8PM at www.unityhall.com Unity Hall is excited to present singer/songwriter E.E. Norris on Saturday, July 11 at 8PM in the 10th performance of its Virtual Concert Series. The free concert will premiere at www.unityhall.com on July 11 and will be viewable for one week following the performance.

The E.E. Norris concert rounds out the 2020 Virtual Series presenting 10 weekly concerts featuring musicians who hail from upstate New York. All have been sheltering at home from Ithaca to Brooklyn to Texas during the pandemic.

Concert viewers have weighed in from locales as far away as California, Alaska, and Florida. After the 7th concert, more than 5,000 virtual audience members had tuned in to the series to hear “live” music in their homes.

E.E. Norris is familiar to Unity Hall audiences. He has performed in concert three times on its main stage and participated in the Hall’s Open Mic Nights. On July 11 he will be playing some familiar tunes by Randy Newman,

by CNY Arts. Unity Hall encourages online audience members to make donations through their “virtual tip jar” where proceeds go to each week's performer.

In addition to the traditional solo format, Norris will play selections accompanied by his “virtual band” with backing tracks he created with other musicians over the years. Norris’ brand of music can best be described as acoustic rock with definite country and bluegrass influences. He has performed in NYC, London, Alaska, and Long Island. Guitar has been his main instrument since he was 13, but he was introduced to mandolin while touring throughout the South in a production called “Appalachia Sounding”.

MARCY - Beloved Eugene D. Manley, Sr., 85, of Marcy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2020.

He was born on October 27, 1934, in North Gage and attended a one-room schoolhouse, of which he was quite proud.

Eugene is the son of the late Francis and Ellaleann (Woodcock) Manley. He married Frances Knittel on June 16, 1956 at St. Leo's Church, Holland Patent. She passed on September 19,2014.

Eugene grew up on the family farm, where he learned to be a "Jack of all trades". As a teenager and up until a few years ago, Eugene was an avid hunter at Big Moose in the Adirondacks, where he caught his trophy deer. He also enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. Eugene worked on the railroad, at Savage Arms and was employed at Special Metals, New Hartford, for over forty years, before retiring. He was also active in the Remsen Fire Department for a number of years. He received an A plus rating on the trailer park he owned in Taberg, which he was grateful for. He also served on the Pitch Team at the American Legion, Holland Patent, which he enjoyed.

No words can describe how "SPECIAL" Eugene was. His compassion was immeasurable and he was always there to lend a hand.

Eugene is survived by his children, Eugene Manley, Jr. and his wife, Rose Manley, of Rochester, Sharon Risley and her husband, Craig Risley, of Hamilton and Brian Manley and his wife, Dee Manley, of FL; he is also survived by his sister, Mary Jo Myers, of Boonville; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Manley and his wife, Lila; his sister, Kathleen Peterson and her husband, Edward; also his sisters-in-law, Sue Gawlikowski, her husband, Leonard and Marjorie Knittel.

A heart-warming thank you from the bottom of our hearts goes out to Bob and Lyn, of Marcy, for being a "God-Send". Dad will have a "SPECIAL" place in our hearts endlessly, he is above and beyond our "HERO".

The funeral for Eugene will be on June 30, 2020. Due to the current health conditions and restrictions, our facility is operating at 25% capacity. Face coverings must be worn.

In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution to the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, Thendara.

New Hartford/Holland Patent James W. Howe 85, of St. Luke’s Home in New Hartford and formerly of Holland Patent passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at St. Luke’s Home.

He was born on November 15, 1934 in Holland Patent a son of the late Claude and Edith (Coleman) Howe Sr. He was educated in Holland Patent Schools.

James was a quiet and friendly person who appreciated the simpler things in life. In his younger years he enjoyed working on, and driving race cars. He also enjoyed motorcycle riding.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Marcia Howe of VA. He leaves his sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Bela, Reggie, and Elaine, also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, June Graham, Shirley Smallwood, Janet Heaney, Patricia Perry, and brothers, Claude Jr, Arthur, Paul and Leroy, as well as a niece, Kimberly Inman.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the many caregivers at St Luke’s Home for the wonderful care and compassion given to James during his stay there.

A graveside service will be on Tuesday June 30, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Crown Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. There are no public calling hours. Arrangements are with the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc. 40 Main St. Whitesboro.

NEWPORT – Judy C. Aiken, 76, of Hillside Terrace Apartments, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2020 at her residence.

Ms. Aiken was born on March 18, 1944 in Dallas, TX, a daughter of the late Donald and Oleta (Lewis) Aiken. Following high school, she furthered her education at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, VA. Judy was last employed as a manager of machine operations at Tri-Steel Structures Inc. in Denton, TX. After moving back to New York, she resided in Frankfort prior to relocating to Hillside Terrace ten years ago.

Judy enjoyed outdoor activities especially kayaking, canoeing, camping, fishing, and hunting. She was also fond of the time she spent knitting and crocheting items for family and friends.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Pula, Jr. of Crawfordville, FL; four daughters, Sophie Woolheater of Portville, NY, Christina (Warren) Schmidt of Grand Terrace, CA, Carrie (Darrin) Seelbach of Ilion and Georgie (Gordon) Miller of Cold Brook; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her canine companion, Panda. The family would also like to acknowledge Judy's lifelong friends, Sandy Bello and Elaine Roback. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Diana White; her brother, Donald Aiken, Jr.; and her companion of 40 years, Ronald Jones.

In accordance with Judy’s wishes, her cremated remains will be inurned with her parents in Dallas, TX. There are no calling hours or services locally.

Bertha H. E. Young NEWPORT – Bertha H. E. Young, 89, formerly of Willoughby Hall, Newport, died on June, 13 2020 at the Katherine Luther Home, Clinton.

Mrs. Young was born on March 11, 1931 in Arnot, PA, the ninth of ten children of the late John and Edith (Johnson) Berguson. She graduated from North Penn High School, Blossburg, PA in 1948 and from Elmira Business College in 1949. She immediately took a position as Executive Secretary to the President of Billard Barbel Machine and Tool Co., Covington, PA. Bertha was united in marriage to John Albert Young on September 30, 1954 at St. John's Church, Newport.

Bertha became dedicated in the role as a homemaker and mother and they first resided in Newport and later in Middleville for many years. Once her children were raised she returned to work as a teacher’s aide at West Canada Valley Central School at the former Middleville Elementary building. John preceded her in death on July 20, 1982. She later moved to Willoughby Hall in Newport and more recently to the Katherine Luther Home.

Bertha had been raised in the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Arnot, PA, a Swedish Lutheran Church. When she moved to Newport in 1960, she became a member and attended the Newport United Methodist Church. Bertha was also a member of Kuyahoora Chapter #145 O.E.S. Survivors include her three children, Cynthia (Tim) Barrington of Overland Park, KS, Jacqueline Young (Steven Betesh) of St. Augustine, FL and John (Tammy)Young of Dorchester, SC; 5 grandchildren, Mark Smith, Ryan Betesh, Erin (Young) Tegen, Erica Young and Jacqueline (Betesh) Botifoll; and many nieces and nephews. She leaves a special friend for the past 37 years, Ed Robenski of Remsen; and two close friends, Joan O. Martin, a resident of the Applewood Unit at Katherine Luther Home and Joyce Leonard of Willoughby Hall, Newport.

In addition to her husband, John, Bertha was predeceased by a son, Robert “Joe” Young in 1995; and all nine of her siblings, Agnes, Walter, Gordon, Harold, John in infancy, Ethel, John R., Donald and Robert.

A private graveside service will take place at St. John’s Cemetery, Newport. There are no public calling hours.

Janel M. (Allen) MacFadden NEWPORT – Janel M. (Allen) MacFadden, 48, of Norway Street, died unexpectedly on June 24, 2020 at her residence.

Janel was born on November 12, 1971 in New Hartford, a daughter of Janet (Bouton) Allen of Newport and the late Ronald D. Allen. She received her early education at Poland Central School and graduated from West Orange High School in Winter Garden, FL in 1989. Janel furthered her education at Valencia College in Orlando. She achieved her Registered Nurse certification and worked in the field of nursing for many years in both Florida and New York. Janel returned to this area in 2012 and was currently employed at Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort.

She enjoyed painting and collecting diamonds at Herkimer Diamond Mines. Janel loved the outdoors and especially the times spent at the beach with her kids. She equally enjoyed time with all her family especially her grandchildren who kept her very busy. Janel was one of a kind and known for her sense of style and humor. She was a very crafty person, always making nothing into something. Janel also was fond of gardening and having plants any place she could. She was a very caring person who always thought about the needs of others often before herself. Janel will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Survivors besides her mother, Janet, include two children, Jessica MacFadden of Little Falls and Garrett MacFadden of Newport; four grandchildren, twins, Brantley and Gunnar Henry, Avery Henry and Maci Dufford; two brothers, Ronald Allen, Jr. and James Allen, of Middleville; one sister, Donna Andrews of Marshall, NC; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by a brother, Mark Allen.

Janel’s family will honor her life privately and a celebration of life ceremony will be held at a later date.

William R. Call TOWN OF OHIO – William R. Call, Sr. 73, of Ohio City Road, died on June 24, 2020 at the St. Luke's Campus of MVHS following complications from a massive stroke.

Mr. Call was born on September 16, 1946 in Exeter, NH, a son of the late Howard and Julia (Piecuch) Call. He graduated from high school in Exeter, NH and was primarily employed in construction throughout his life. Bill last worked as a heavy equipment operator with Power Line Constructors in Clinton. He shared a loving relationship with Sandra (Krol) Rachon for the past sixteen years and the couple was married on February 12, 2011 in the Town of Ohio.

Bill enjoyed NASCAR and Dirt Bike racing. He was also fond of time spent with family and friends.

Survivors besides his wife, Sandi, include two children, William (Dana) Call, Jr. of Windham, NH and Lisa (Stan) Rose of England, UK; three brothers, Howard (Cheryl) Call, Jr. of Candia, NH, Dennis Call of South Rockwood, MI and Thomas Call of Newport, NC; one sister, Priscilla Trefethen of Rockingham, NH; two stepchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Rachon of the Town of Norway and Connie Rachon (David Darling, Jr.) of Salisbury Center; eleven grandchildren, Rick and Daniel Jordan, Amanda and Mason Call, Kyle (Alicia) Lawson, Brett (Kaylie) Lawson, Joshua Rachon (Ashley), Courtney Rachon (Tanner), Matthew Rachon, Chelsey (Adam) Helmer and Justin (Jeena) Victor; seven great-grandchildren, Brantley and Paisley Lawson, Aubrey, Carter and Evelyn Jordan, Jayden Victor and Harlan Helmer; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Robert Fenton and Margaret Lawson; and his canine companions, Bubba and Bentley.

Kenneth C. Arnold TOWN OF OHIO – Kenneth C. Arnold, 77, of Bull Hill Road, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2020.

Mr. Arnold was born on May 24, 1943 in Canastota, a son of the late Ellis “Pat” and Ruth (Miles) Arnold. Ken attended Georgetown schools and was forced to leave school at an early age to operate the family farm due to the passing of his stepfather, Wilfred Miller. On September 23, 1989, Kenneth was united in marriage with Cathryn Bailey McKay at Chittenango Falls State Park. He worked as a mechanic his entire life and retired from Will’s Mobile Service in Vernon. Ken was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Poland.

His garage was like a second home where he spent many hours. He had a great love of country music, his guns, and for his pets, especially his canine companions, Willow and Rusty. Ken enjoyed to hunt and fish when he was able. In earlier years, his favorite place to be was camping and fishing at Noblesboro, where he was also baptized.

Survivors besides his wife of 30 years, Cathryn, include six children, Daniel Arnold of Liverpool, Kenneth (Diana) Arnold of Rome, James (Kim) McKay of Ohio, Christopher McKay of California, Michele McKay (Tyron Johnson) of Gloversville and Karen McKay (Richard Hardter) of Liverpool; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Walker, of Verona Beach, Barbara Dorword, of DeRuyter and Rosalie and Louis Leggett, of Oneida; fifteen grandchildren, Michael Nichols, Kimberly Richoux, Austin Arnold, Tyler Arnold, Douglas McKay, Alissa McKay, Kristy McKay, Chelsey Wiseman, Richard Sessions, Nicholas Sessions, Amanda Sessions, Mabel Standley, Noah Hardter, Brayden Hardter and Breelynn Hardter; 12 great-grandchildren, Douglas McKay, Karlie McKay, Sophia McKay, Kaylee McKay, Mason Lewis, Elizabeth Lewis, Emily Neilsen, Madilyn McKay, Elliot Saheeb, Jamison Sessions, Quincy McFarland and Castiel Standley; and many nieces and nephews.

Ken was anxiously awaiting the birth of his 13th great-grandchild, Elliott Richoux.

In addition to his parents and stepfather, he was predeceased by five brothers, Stanley, Louis, Leo, Alfred and Wilfred "Butch" Miller; and by five sisters, Mary Lou Pickard, Betty Whaley, Joyce Robbins, Edna Hall, and Leona Hart.

Visitation will be held at the family home on 865 Bull Hill Road, Ohio, on Saturday, July 11th from 1-2, followed by a celebration of life with Pastor Mark Sellers officiating. A reception will follow the services at the family home as well.

Richard J. Holmes Richard J. Holmes, 71 passed away unexpectedly on May 8, 2020 in Rome, NY. Richard was born into this world on March 23, 1949, the son of Richard K. Holmes and Ruth Kaelin Holmes. As a young boy, Richard enjoyed growing up in North Utica -- exploring the area around Reel’s Creek on day long adventures with his friends; trapping at Utica Marsh and working at his first job at a young age collecting shopping carts at Acme Markets at the North Utica shopping center. In 1967, Richard graduated from Utica Free Academy and within months was drafted by the United States Army to fight in the Vietnam War. Upon returning from Vietnam, he worked a number of different jobs in the Utica area and then moved; living and working in North Carolina, Colorado and Arizona. He held several jobs when returning to the Mohawk Valley, but his favorite was being a truck driver for Smith Packing of Utica from which he retired.

His customers always appreciated his sincere friendliness; his willingness to assist them and his dependability. Everyone and anyone that knew Richard appreciated his sense of humor. He is deeply missed by his mother, Ruth Mather; his sisters Susan McDonnell and Bonnie Holmes, special friends Frank and Patty Northrup and many friends that he left in the Remsen area. He may be gone from our sight, but he is not forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date.

Joyce B. Schweinsberg SOUTH TRENTON - Joyce B. Schweinsberg, 91, of Church Road, passed away on June 28, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospital.

She was born in Utica on December 25, 1928, a daughter of Francis and Juanita Root Brown. She graduated from UFA in 1947 and attended Utica School of Commerce for accounting.

Joyce spent summers, as a youth, in Port Leyden.

She was united in marriage to Wallace (Wally) Schweinsberg on June 21, 1952 in Utica. The couple settled in South Trenton, where she has lived for 66 years.

She was employed at General Electric, Utica, from 1950-57.

Joyce was a member of the South Trenton Presbyterian Church, past president of S. Trenton Community Association, S. Trenton Cemetery Association, Holland Patent American Legion Auxiliary, Singing Hills Seniors, past president of Daughters of Union Soldiers of Civil War, AARP and UFA Alumni. She enjoyed spending time with her family and playing cards. She also enjoyed spending summers in Old Forge on Fourth Lake from 1965 to the present.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Joseph Partyka, S. Trenton; a son and daughter-in-law, Kyle and Dawn Schweinsberg, Old Forge; grandchildren, Nicole, Heather Partyka, Paige and Brooke Schweinsberg; step grandchildren, Michael, Brittany (Ryan) and Michelle; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Leigha and Giavanna; two step great-grandchildren, Kaydence and William; one sister, Janet Crane; special cousin, Jim Brown; and several special nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband on January 17, 2008; a son, Clifton, in 1996; and an infant sister, Janice Brown.

Memorial contributions in her name can be made to the South Trenton Presbyterian Church or do something kind for your neighbors.

Louise M. Burke HERKIMER – Louise M. Burke, 99, formerly of Cold Brook and New Hartford, went to the arms of the Lord on June 17, 2020 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer.

Mrs. Burke was born on August 31, 1920 in the Town of Russia, a daughter of the late Ralph and Florence (Willoughby) Munger. She graduated from Poland Central School in 1939 and furthered her education at the Watertown School of Commerce.

Louise was united in marriage to Paul McLean of Herkimer, who passed away in 1947. In 1958, she married Robert Balch and was later divorced. Her last marriage was to Charles T. Burke in 1983. Mr. Burke preceded her in death on July 15, 1999. Louise was last employed as a Therapy Aide for the NYS Department of Mental Hygiene in Herkimer. She had resided at Valley Health Services for the past seven years.

Louise was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Adirondack Unit #1118 American Legion Auxiliary, Cold Brook. At one time, she enjoyed recreational flying and was a member of the Highland Flying Club, Frankfort. Mrs. Burke was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Bonnie Mueller and her husband, Richard, of Middleville. In addition to her husbands, Louise was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Munger and Dora Joyce; and by three brothers, Harry, Roscoe, and John Munger.

A private graveside service was held at Ohio Cemetery with Pastor Robin Harris of the Ohio United Methodist Church, officiating. There were no public calling hours.

Shirley Richards Klossner 89, known as “Grandma” to many entered into rest peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at The Pines at Utica.

She was born on April 25, 1931 in Deerfield, NY a daughter of the late Arthur and Helen (Forbes) Richards. She was raised in North Gage, Poland and eventually moved to Holland Patent in 1944. As a teenager during WW II Shirley was an observer, where she watched for types of enemy planes and the number of engines, and was to call in any sighting from a location above the North Gage Cemetery.

She graduated from Holland Patent Central School in 1948, she continued her education and graduated from the Excelsior School of Business in 1949. She was united in marriage to Arnold Klossner on August 5, 1949. They first moved to East Aurora, NY where Shirley was employed with Fisher Price. They later

William R. Jones Remsen-William R. Jones, 74, of Black Hollow Road passed away on June 25, 2020 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Utica, N.Y. on June 18, 1946 a son of William C. and Gladys Joslin Jones. He attended Remsen High School and married Kathleen Burns on April 11, 1964 in Remsen. She died June 19, 2006. He operated the family dairy farm for many years as well as drove truck for Hastings-Fisher Fuels. For 10 years he drove bus for Central Coach Lines. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Surviving are his children, Laurie and Chris Ricci, Boonville, Lisa Schrader, FL., Billy and Pennie Jones, TN. and Scott and Amy Jones, Barneveld; grandchildren, Kayla Thompson, Brandie Schrader, Cory and Katelynn Schrader, Adam and Andrew Jones, Jessica Henington, Daniel Bellinger Jr. and Rebecca Stanko; great grandchild, Cayden Schrader and sisters, Liz Jones, Poland, Garrie Jones and Debbie Jones, both of Remsen. He is predeceased by a grandson Cameron Thompson.

David E. Watkins UTICA/REMSEN - David E. Watkins, 75, of Utica and formerly of Remsen, passed away June 24, 2020 at Lutheran Care.

He was born October 16, 1944 in Gloversville. David was educated at St. Francis de Sales School, Utica Free Academy and earned his Associate's Degree from Mohawk Valley Community College. Mr. Watkins was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served honorably from 1962-1965. David was employed as a bartender and chef at various local restaurants, including Hart's Hill Inn and Tiny's Gill. He was also employed as a cook with Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center.

He was predeceased by his parents, Garfield Watkins and Gertrude Doyle Watkins; and a sister, Joyce Babowicz.

Shirley was employed at one time with Marcy State Hospital from 1951 to 1953, and later with Marcy and Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Centers as a therapy aide from 1966 to 1989, retiring after 25 years of dedicated service.

She also sold Avon Products for 33 years from 1980 to 2013.

Shirley’s travel took her to Alaska, Switzerland, and much of the United States.

She kept things simple and basic and spent much of her time helping others. She was a staunch supporter of the Military. She especially enjoyed time with her grandchildren, and old television shows.

Shirley was a member of the Mappa Chapter Eastern Star, the South Trenton Grange, and the Upton Memorial VFW Auxiliary of Stittville.

She is survived by her son John (Joyce) Klossner, daugh-

ters, Bonnie Klossner, and Connie (Joel) Burgess. She leaves her grandchildren, Jennifer Burretto, Christopher Klossner, Joshua Klossner, Brandon Klossner, Hannah Burgess, and Savanah Burgess, and her great grandsons, William and John Burretto. Shirley was predeceased by a brother, Harold (Dean) Richards in 1986, and her husband Arnold Klossner in 1974.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family at the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc. 7944 Steuben St. in Holland Patent with Pastor Sue Solomen officiating.

Patricia Ilene (Howe) Perry Remsen- Patricia Ilene (Howe) Perry, 83, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 15, 2020. She was a resident of the Foltsbrook Center in Herkimer and had been in declining health over the last several years. Her loving family will dearly miss her.

Patricia was born on July 30, 1936 in Holland Patent, NY to the late Claude and Edith (Coleman) Howe. She grew up in a large family which included three sisters and six brothers. She married Paul Perry on September 15, 1956. They built their home on Starr Hill in Steuben where they raised their six children and lived until Paul passed away in June 2016. Her family brought much joy to her life and she enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. Patricia was a warm and caring sister, mother, and grandmother known for her smile, warm embrace and kind acts for others. She enjoyed her long walks, sitting outdoors watching the seasons change and tackling a challenging jigsaw puzzle.

Patricia is survived by her children, Robert (Kim) Perry, Dale Perry, Barbara Mroz, Gail (Todd) Pacciarelli-Millspaugh, Elizabeth (Joseph) Venus and Susan Malcolm; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and brothers Ronald and James Howe.

Patricia was predeceased by her parents Claude and Edith Howe; sisters June Graham, Shirley Smallwood, Janet Heaney and brothers Claude, Arthur, Paul, and Leroy.

FLEA (not so fun) FACTS At some point in their lives, most pets experience discomfort caused by fleas.

These parasites can be extremely irritating to pets and can cause serious skin problems or even carry disease. Modern medicines make treatment, control, and prevention of fleas much easier than in the past. Fleas thrive when the weather is warm and humid. Your pet can pick up fleas wherever an infestation exists, often in areas frequented by other cats and dogs. Adult fleas are dark brown, no bigger than a sesame seed, and able to move rapidly over your pet’s skin.

Once the flea becomes an adult, it spends virtually all of its time on your pet.

Female fleas begin laying eggs within 24 hours of selecting your pet as a host, producing up to 50 eggs each day. These eggs fall from your pet onto the floor or furniture, including your pet’s bed, or onto any other indoor or outdoor area where your pet happens to go. Tiny, worm-like larvae hatch from the eggs and burrow into carpets, under furniture, or into soil before spinning a cocoon. The cocooned flea pupae can lie dormant (inactive) for weeks before emerging as adults that are ready to infest (or re-infest) your pet. The result is a flea life cycle of anywhere from 12 days to 6 months, depending on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

Diagnosis, risks and consequences You may not know that your pet has fleas until their number increases to the point that your pet is obviously uncomfortable. Signs of flea problems range from mild redness to severe scratching that can lead to open sores and skin infections (“hot spots”). One of the first things you may notice on a pet with fleas is “flea dirt”—the black flea droppings left on your pet’s coat. You may not actually see the fleas themselves, but they can still be on your pet and in the environment.

Fleas bite animals and suck their blood; young or small pets with heavy flea infestations may become anemic. Some pets can develop an allergy to flea saliva that may result in more severe irritation and scratching; these pets can become severely itchy from just one or two flea bites.

With moderate and severe flea infestations, you may also be advised to treat your yard. Your veterinarian can recommend an appropriate course of action and suggest ways to prevent future flea infestations.

Rural Star and student loan debt.

Once you have a full picture of your debts and assets, you can discuss dividing them.

Taking Care of Finances During Divorce Obviously, divorce is an emotionally charged time for you and your family. Because you’re juggling so many arrangements, you might decide to wait to work out financial details during your final divorce settlement.

However, many divorce attorneys suggest thinking about how to divide your financial responsibilities as early as possible—particularly if you have shared debt.

Look at shared debt With the help of a mediator and/or your financial advisor, you may be able to decide which of you will take which debts. You may consider paying off or closing any credit accounts before you divorce.

Most states allow you to settle debt issues between you. If you can’t come to an agreement and the court has to decide for you, the divorce can get very complex and expensive.

Another reason to be proactive about your shared debt: it can help you both maintain good credit ratings after your split and, perhaps most important, prevent uncomfortable conversations about unresolved debts with your exspouse in the future.

Pay attention to your credit score and any joint credit cards. You should both agree to stop using joint cards, but it’s important to keep tabs and make sure that’s actually hap-

pening.

Get help as soon as you consider a separation Meet with your financial advisor at the first hint of impending separation. A good financial advisor will be compassionate and willing to remain neutral if he or she serves both you and your soon-to-be ex. He or she should also be fully supportive if you or your spouse decide to seek the guidance of separate advisors. In all likelihood, he or she will have advised divorcing couples in the past.

Your advisor can revisit your investment portfolio and do a cash-flow analysis to illustrate what you might draw as future income. Your advisor can also offer advice about which shared debts might be best for you to take on (or avoid) given the amount of risk with which you are comfortable.

Start with your credit report The smartest way to begin reviewing your debts is to request a copy of your credit report so you can verify which liabilities are in your name. If your spouse is willing to share his or her credit report, that can help you get a full breakdown of all shared debts. Your obligations might include a primary or vacation home mortgage, vehicle loans, credit cards and lines of credit, family business-related debt,

What about the house?

Many divorcing women want to keep the family home if at all possible, especially when children are still living at home. The spouse who keeps each home should also take responsibility for its loan, refinancing it in his or her name if possible.

Information is important to handling debt well during a divorce One situation where you might have to continue working together with your exspouse on a shared debt is if you have an unresolved tax obligation. You should talk to the IRS about setting up separate payments on that joint debt.

You may not agree on how to split contentious debts, such as secret credit card debt created by your spouse. In that case, your state’s laws will come into play. For instance, in most states, ownership of debts is decided by “equitable distribution.” A judge or mediator assigns debts to spouses according to factors such as who signed for it, got greatest value from it, or has the larger income.

Separate debts into your individual names when you divorce It’s important to understand that your obligation to your financial institution is completely separate from any obligations to your ex-spouse resulting from your divorce decree.

For example, the wife gets the house in a divorce settlement and agrees to pay the mortgage. If she doesn’t make the payments and her ex-husband is still jointly listed on the mortgage, he is still

responsible for the debt. His credit rating and ability to get future loans can be compromised, and the bank could sue him for collections.

Overall, information is the most important key to handling debt well during a divorce. Collect tax returns, credit reports, and bank and brokerage statements as early as possible. The more you know about your marital finances, the easier it will be for you to negotiate over outstanding debts at the settlement table.

The Test of Time The children of David and Linda (Roberts) Fletcher happily announce their 50th Wedding Anniversary. David and Linda were married on June 27, 1970 in St. Leo’s Church, Holland Patent.

They have been blessed with three daughters- Becky, Sally and Casey.

David worked 37 years for NY State, retiring in 2003; and 13 years as a Town Justice. Linda worked for NY State , retiring in 2004, and 50 years as a wife, mother and ‘MeMe’. God bless her.

David and Linda were active members plus Directors for three years of a GWRRA Goldwing Motorcycle Club, Chapter T, Their group rides on their 6 cylinder bike with air bag and heated seats took them to both Carolinas, Tennessee, Vermont and Maine (moose blocking the road was a highlight).

Being married to the same person for 50 years is an accomplishment that deserves recognition- especially when the following time is added- Linda and Dave had been going together since the 6th Grade. Their unique relationship may have sparked some conversation in the teacher’s lounge over the years.

In the pictures are David and Linda as they appear 50 years later, their June 27, 1970, and as they appeared on the Holland Patent Central School Calendar (65-66). They both graduated in June, 1966. You do the math…
