On July 12 NASA released the first photos of the James Webb Space Telescope. Though there are some compelling images of the beginning of time, being the Star, we decided to share the stunning image of a star being born. “This landscape of “mountains” and “valleys” speckled with glittering stars is actually the edge of a nearby, young, star-forming region called NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. Captured in infrared light

by NASA’s new James Webb Space Telescope, this image reveals for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth.

Called the Cosmic Cliffs, Webb’s seemingly three-dimensional picture looks like craggy mountains on a moonlit evening. In reality, it is the edge of the giant, gaseous cavity within NGC 3324, and the tallest “peaks” in this image are about 7 light-years high. The cavernous area has been carved from the nebula by the intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from extremely massive, hot, young stars located in the center of the bubble, above the area shown in this image.”

2022 will mark the 96th year for the Old Home Day Celebration to be held at Steuben Corners. This will continue to be a different celebration as we come away from the covid-19 issues that altered our activities. The planning committee is very determined to continue the long-term tradition of a great roast pork dinner. Our efforts for 96 years have been to support the 4 rural cemeteries in the Town of Steuben and the Methodist Women's Group at Steuben Methodist Church. The original Old Home Day Activities were started by the Women's Group. These 4 cemeteries rely on this fundraising effort to keep the cemeteries mowed and clean. The Women's Group uses their funds for local missions and community needs.

This year we will be able to hold our morning auction starting at 11, and at noon the Community Service Award; at 12:30 pm will be the Edelweiss Schuhplatters; and then at 2pm will be the Kirk Streeter Band. The dinner will be a take-out meal on August 27, 2022 at 3 pm at the Steuben Town Hall. The menu will provide the same great meal as in the past consisting of roast pork, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, homemade applesauce, cold slaw (our same famous recipe), rolls, brown bread and homemade pie.

Takeouts will be available for pickup between 3:00 until sold out. The cost will be $ 20.

On Sunday, August 28, 2022 the entire community is invited to the Steuben Methodist Church for a community church service at 9:00 am. There will be a special offering taken at this service to be shared by the ceme-

Long and Blue Mountain Lakes This one of my life stories is dedicated to my hard working friend Karen who wants to see what I saw!

These places are wonderful areas to visit and explore!

Both small towns are like visiting shops and places to eat in a bygone era. Which of course my cup of tea! As my mom often told me I was born in the wrong century.

My favorite time to visit Long lake is in winter. The town clears the snow off ice and dozens of skaters enjoy the freedom their skates brings them! Colorful scarves surround their necks and float behind them and I wonder if anyone of them make it to the winter Olympics.

Climbing Blue Mountain just before summer is a great time if you don't mind rough trails. You don't have to bring fruit with you! The pleasant smell of blueberry blossoms fill my lungs and here and there are clusters of the blueberries! Blueberry break time! The view at the top is spectacular! Miles of tops of the trees lakes other mountains and flowering bushes. Back down. I head for renting a kayak, and put in at a pier . The water of Blue Mountain Lake is so clear I could be looking down thirty or more feet and see everything like it was just inches down!

I paddle under several walking bridges and a movement under the water catches my eye . Far below along the bottom swam a huge turtle! I can see the formations on her shell and the long nails of her feet propelling her forward. I didn't see that every day Thought for the day: let's be empathetic . And care from the heart!

It’s getting hot out there!

Lake Ontario fishing is heating up. With the price of gas lately I decided to wait until I knew the fishing would pick up. I’ve got a couple friends that guide out there so I’ve been in contact with them to see how the lake is progressing.

Finally a day came where the winds were right and there were some fish around.

My friend Tom called me and asked if he and his son, also Tom, could go fishing with me one day. He was thinking of going to Oneida lake but I told him that if he could go on Sunday that would be best and we could go to Ontario. The conditions should be excellent.

Tom checked with his son and it was a go. He’s got an almost 2 hour trip to my house so I told them to be to my house around 10 am and we could be on the lake around noon. If you’ve ever been on Ontario in the evening when it’s flat calm there is nothing like it. I told them we WILL be there until dark and they would be late getting home but it would be worth it.

On the way we stopped for gas and subs for lunch and

got to the lake around 12:30 pm. The launch wasn’t too busy so it was a quick unload and out to the lake. I headed out and got out around 80 feet deep and stopped to check where the thermocline was.

The distinct temperature change was around 65 feet down. I started to set up right there. I started with the down riggers and let The younger Tom drive the boat. I’d just set the second rigger down around 78 feet of cable which would put it actually down right around that 65 foot mark with blowback from the moving boat. I turned around for 30 seconds and then looked back… FISH ON!! I grabbed the rod and made sure the fish was there and handed it to the son. After a few minutes he had landed his first King Salmon and the biggest fish he ever caught.

What a start!

We took some pics and I got that rigger set back up.

After that I got the diver rods set. I tried to keep everything from that 65 foot depth to around 80 feet down. The first couple fish came from that 80-100 area but then it slowed. I decided to make my way out. The next fish hit at

240 feet. We landed it and continued on the path out to 300 feet. Nothing happening.

I decided to turn in. After that I stayed between 240 and 220 feet deep, zig zagging back and forth. That’s were we got the majority of the fish. Not long before dark my friend Phil who guides out there messaged me that they caught a 24 pounder on a diver out only 145 feet back.

I brought one of mine in to near that and almost instantly we took a hit! It would turn out to be the biggest fish of the day. A king Salmon just over 20 pounds. With minimal daylight left I was hurrying to get that line back in the water when i realized the rigger pole on that side was thumping. It didn’t release though so I knew I had one on the slider I had on that set.

A slider, or cheater as some call them, is a short length of leader with a swivel on each and that hooks to your main line. It will naturally find the belly of the line, usually about halfway from the surface and the release and stop there. So if your main line is at 70 feet, your slider will be around 35 feet. I was running a smaller orange spoon on the slider hoping to catch a steelhead. Well, it was a steelhead, Before the line even released from the rigger it was jumping 15 feet behind the boat. I

tried reeling the slack line up to get the hook set but by the time I got it taught he was gone.

A nice steelhead would have been a great way to end an already great day but no one was complaining. We were 9-13 with all King Salmon. The more important part though was a father and son got to go out together and have a great day on the water.

One they’ve both told me that they’ll never forget!

Public Service at Municipal Center The Town of Trenton is one of the collection sites in Oneida County for the RXMedReturn Units.

These units provide a safe, convenient and responsible way for our citizens to dispose of their unused, expired prescriptions and over the counter medicines. This program will be overseen and serviced by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department.

The unit is located in the Lobby of our Municipal Center on Old Poland Road in Barneveld and will be accessible whenever the Center is open for business (i.e. Town Clerk hours, Court Nights, Public Hearings & Meetings, etc.).

Remsen Arts: Big Band The Remsen Arts Center presents the Tuesday Night Big Band on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at 7pm at 9627 Main Street, Remsen, NY. At the Door Prices: General Admission $10, Members $8, Students $5.

The Tuesday Night Big Band was formed in the summer of 1991. Since that time the band has spent each summer season and occasional holidays playing at parks, concert venues, and private events. The band consists of a 14 piece group, with 5 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, bass, piano, and drums. Performing music that was first popular in the 1930s and ‘40s in the “Big Band Era”, including bands led by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and many others. The Tuesday Night Big Band enjoys keeping this music alive for audience enjoyment into the 21st century plus playing more recent compositions.

He was born on November 16, 1950 in Utica, a son of Joseph and Sarah (Soja) Kaczor. Walter graduated from Notre Dame High School and furthered his edu-

cation at Oswego State, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, furthering his pursuit of knowledge at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning a Master’s degree. He then went on in pursuit of a doctorate in entomology at Cornell University until he decided to prioritize his young family and left Cornell just prior to his dis-

She was a cosmetologist; she worked for Upstate Cerebral Palsy for many years, Family Dollar Distribution, Poland Central School as a custodian and also at Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center as a custodian and hair dresser. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, music and dancing.

Surviving are her fiancé, Michael Wishart; children, Kelsey Bowman and Chase Bowman, both of Poland and Stephanie Wishart, Remsen; father and stepmom, Donald and Phyllis Lighthall, Prospect; siblings, Patrick Jansen, Lance Jansen and Renee Jewett, all of Remsen; many other brothers and sisters; nieces and nephews, Amber Lee Frey, Ian and Brody Robison, Garner and Garrett Jansen, and Jonathan and Maddox Jewett. DeeDee was predeceased by her mother in 2007, two siblings Douglas Garner and Tammy Robison-Jansen.

Walter began his teaching career with John F. Hughes Elementary School in Utica and then as a science teacher with Remsen Central Schools, teaching Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science.

He would often say that his church was in nature where he felt closest to God. Walter was a very loving husband, father and grandfather (dziadzi), who also cared deeply for his students and friends. He had a passion for the outdoors and loved to fish on Woodhull Lake, hunt deer on his property in Remsen and golf wherever he could find grass short enough to hit a drive. Walter also coached golf, girls’ and boys’ basketball, boys’ soccer and skiing.

He was also on the Ski Patrol at Woods Valley for 20 years.

He was a passionate member of NYSUT. He was a world traveler and shared that passion by taking his entire family on ancestral discovery trips to Poland and Norway.

As well as vacation trips to Hawaii, Thailand and China.

Walter also cherished his days running around the east coast shuttling his children to ski racing events, or simply driving 8 hours to cheer them on.

Paul W. Maikranz, Sr., 80, of Holland Patent, passed away on Monday, May 23, 2022 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare.

He was born on October 9, 1941 in Utica, a son of the late William and Madeline (Cross) Maikranz and was educated in Whitesboro Schools. On January 27, 1962, Paul was united in marriage to Sandra J. Kessler at St. Leo’s Catholic Church and shared a blessed union of 60 years. He was employed in Utica with Dairylea as a truck driver and then at the Oneida County Airport in Oriskany as a private currier.

Paul was a very loving husband, father and grandfather.

Together with his wife, they both enjoyed the hobby of being Ham Radio Operators. In his spare time Paul loved to go fishing in the canal and on Oneida Lake in Sylvan Beach. Above all, he relished the time spent with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Sandy, Holland Patent; sons, Edward (Lisa) Maikranz, Gulfport, MS and Scott (Amanda) Maikranz, Leander, TX; several grandchildren; brother, David Maikranz and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Paul W. Maikranz, Jr. and a sister and brothers.

In keeping with Paul’s wishes there will be no public visitation. Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Wilhelmina “Willie” (Mani) Radell Wilhelmina “Willie” (Mani) Radell, 85, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at home with her family.

Willie was born on June 29, 1937, the daughter of David and Anna Berger Mani in Ava, NY. At the age of 5, she and her family moved to Frenchville, where she currently resided. Willie graduated from Holland Patent Central School in 1955.

She studied accounting at MVCC. On March 16, 1956, Willie married her high school sweetheart Maxwell “Pat” Radell.

They were married 28 years, when Max passed away on August 12, 1984.

As Max was the Highway Superintendent for Western at the time, Willie completed his term. Willie was employed at Revere Copper & Brass as a Senior Clerk, retiring in 1997, with 37 years of employment.

Willie and her close friend and companion Harold Lenaghen “Grandpa Harold”, had a camp on Black River

which they enjoyed for many years. Many memories were made here with her grandchildren and Grandpa Harold. Willie also enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities, and was proud of all of their accomplishments.

Radell and his longtime buddy Brittany Van Duzer, TX; and a great-grandson, Cody Compton. She is also survived by her stepgrandchildren and their families, Nathan, Ashlea, Simon and Richard; a sister-in-law, June Mani, and also Patricia Radell.

She greatly enjoyed gardening, being outdoors tending her vegetable and flower gardens or just mowing the lawn. At one time she had over 100 house plants.

Willie enjoyed the companionship of her close family friend Helen C. DeHart. Her family is forever grateful for her kindness and care.

Besides her husband Max, Willie was predeceased by her longtime companion, Harold Lenaghen, in February 2010; her brother, George Mani, in September 2009; and son-in-law, Carlton Weaver, in February 2011.

She was a member of North Western United Methodist Church, where she once taught Sunday School. She was a forty year member of Westernville Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, where she was also an EMT with the Fire Co.. Willie was also a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop Leader.

Willie is survived by her children, Anna RadellWeaver, Boonville, Michael (Joan) Radell, Clarks Summit, PA, Daniel Radell, Constantia; grandchildren, Laine (Ryan) Compton, Riverhead, NJ, Chelsae Radell, Kodiak, AK, Ian

Her Funeral was at the Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., Boonville, where Rev. Robert Wollaber officiated. Interment followed in Westernville Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westernville Fire Co. or to North Western United Methodist Church.

Marylyn F. Fitch

Marylyn F. Fitch, 85, of White Creek Road, died unexpectedly on July 11, 2022 at MVHS - St. Lukes’s Campus, New Hartford.

Ms. Fitch was born on November 2, 1936 in the Town of Russia, a daughter of the late Lynn and Mary (Alton) Fitch. She graduated from Poland Central School. In her early years she worked at the veneer mill in Poland. She retired from the service department at Sears, New Hartford, where she was employed for 37 years. After her retirement, she worked part time as a home health care aide. Ms. Fitch was a member of the former Gravesville Grange and enjoyed knitting.

Survivors include a son, Raymond (Arlene) Fitch of Marcy; nieces and nephews, Sandy (Nick) Salerno, Mary (Michael) Kraeger, and Michael Fitch, all of Poland; special friends, Diane Martin of Watertown, and Michelle Kreimeyer of KY. In addition to her parents, Marylyn was predeceased by a brother, William Fitch.

A private graveside service will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport.

Stanley L. Koziarz Stanley L. Koziarz, 93, of Floyd, husband of Clarice, passed away at his residence, on Friday, July 15, 2022, while under the care of his family and hospice. Stanley was born on April 12, 1929, near Boonville, on the Koziarz homestead farm, a son of Antoni and Marja Burszta Koziarz. He grew up on his family’s farm, near the Pixley section of State Rt. 46 and received his education at Boonville Central School. On November 7, 1959, Stanley was united in marriage with Clarice Smith, at Westernville Presbyterian Church. Thereafter the couple settled on the Smith farm on Smith Road where they have since lived. Eventually Stanley and Clarice assumed the operations of the Koziarz Dairy Farm. Mr. Koziarz was also a self-employed contractor who was very skilled at operating heavy equipment, especially bulldozing and operating a backhoe. As a hardworking and generous person, Stanley will be remembered as a person who often volunteered his equipment and services to assist fellow farmers who had suffered from fires or floods on their buildings or property. He also dug foundations for new homes, just because he could do the job.

The perfect summation to how Stanley lived his life is: He greatly enjoyed helping people in general. Mr. Koziarz, was a longtime member of All Saints Polish National Catholic Church, Rome and also a longtime active member of the Floyd Fire Department. Stanley also possessed an interest in young people who were involved with agriculture and for many years he was a member of the FFA Alumni and the Agricultural Advisory Board, both at Holland Patent Central School. He enjoyed making maple syrup, hunting, fishing and moose hunting in Canada. After his retirement from farming, he and Clarice enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Canada. In addition to his wife, Clarice, Stanley is survived by a son, John S. Koziarz, Floyd; a daughter and son in law, Jean and Hobart Kraeger, Steuben, two grandchildren, Margaret Kraeger, Poland and Walter Kraeger, Steuben and one great grandchild, Seth Kraeger. The last of his family, Stanley was predeceased by brothers, Walter, Edward and Chester and one sister, Helen Kwasniewski. Visitation hours will be on Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 10:00 A.M. until 12 Noon, at the Nunn & Harper Funeral Home, Inc. 418 North George St. Rome, where a funeral service will begin at 12 Noon, also on Saturday. Andrew (Andy) F. Trinkaus Andrew (Andy) F. Trinkaus 99, of Oriskany, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, July 14, 2022.

He was born on May 24, 1923, in Fly Creek, NY a son of the late Frank and Gertrude (Reich) Trinkaus. Andy attended Cooperstown High School where he was known as an outstanding athlete. Prior to his senior year, the family moved to Oriskany. Andy decided to attend Whitesboro High School so that he could play “Eleven Man” Football. Andy was an outstanding lineman and was a member of Whitesboro’s first undefeated team. Throughout Andy’s life he remained a strong supporter of both Whitesboro and Oriskany Football.

With the outbreak of World War II, Andy answered the call and served his country with honor in the United States Army as an Anti-Aircraft weapons specialist in the Philippine Islands. Upon his return from the War, Andy met the love of his life, Anna O’Neill. They were united in marriage on June 28, 1947, at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Oriskany, a blessed union of over 75 years filled with much love and mutual devotion.

Andy along with his family owned and operated the family business, Trinkaus Manor, in Oriskany. He was an intricate part of the business. He was considered an outstanding artist and designer, who was responsible for designing and building all of the Christmas decorations that adorned “The Manor” every year. All of the decorations were a product of Andy’s imagination and creativity. Until his passing, Andy maintained a busy schedule designing and creating displays for the City of Rome along with the Anchor from the USS Oriskany located in Trinkaus Park in Oriskany.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Oriskany, the Oriskany American Legion Post 1448, the Whitestown Rotary Club, the 40 & 8 of Oriskany, He was the founder of the Touchdown Club. He was the director of the Oneida County OTB, and he also served as a trustee on the Oriskany Village Board.

Andy was known as a man of many talents. He was an accomplished musician known for his virtuosity on the Hammond Organ, he also enjoyed playing the accordion naturally specializing in polkas. He enjoyed collecting cannons from all eras. He also was a big fan of fast pitch softball, and was an avid New York Giants Fan. He is survived by his wife Anna, his children, Peg Trinkaus of Oriskany, John (Kimberly) Trinkaus of Marcy, Barb Balfe of Holland Patent, Kevin Trinkaus of Colorado, Danny Trinkaus of Oriskany, and Kyle Trinkaus of Colorado. He leaves his grandchildren, Brian (Julie) Balfe, Krysten Balfe and her fiancé Chad Armstrong, Michael Balfe and his fiancé

Joyce W. Bliss, Our mother, Joyce W. Bliss, age 96, of Barneveld, passed away peacefully, at the home of her oldest daughter and caregiver, on July 6, 2022.

She was born on November 27, 1925, in Kirkland, NY, the daughter of Martin J. and Carrie Blanding Wilkinson. Joyce received her education in Clinton Schools and furthered her education at CCBI in Syracuse. She married Joseph J. Bliss on April 2, 1945, at St. Mary’s Church, Clinton. A blessed union of more than 60 years, until his passing on January 31, 2006.

Mrs. Bliss worked as a secretary at Utica Drop Forge. She raised ten children. After her husband retired, she went back to work at Oneida County HEAP, retiring in 2011.

She was an active member of St. Leo’s Church, Holland Patent, the Altar Rosary Society, South Trenton Community Assn and a 4-H Leader. An avid reader, she enjoyed cooking and baking, playing games, including Pitch.

She is survived by her ten children and their spouses, John (Rose Mary) Bliss, Mary (the late George) Zacek, James (Evelyn) Bliss, Stephen (Bernadette) Bliss, Anne (Stephen) Waskiewicz, Michael (the late Karin) Bliss, Patrick (April) Bliss, Teresa (Ken) Suszynski, Kathleen (the late Jack) Callow and Joseph (Cynthia) Bliss; 34 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews.

Joyce was predeceased by her siblings, John, Winifred, Paulina and James.

Kathleen M. Lukaszek Kathleen M. Lukaszek, 71, of Remsen, a former resident of Yorkville and wife of John, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Utica.

Kathleen was born in Utica, on June 13, 1951, a daughter of Reginald George and Thelma Mae Waddington Davis. She grew up on Elmwood Ave, Yorkville and graduated from Whitesboro High School with the Class of 1969. Thereafter, she was employed as a Certified Nurse Assistant at Utica area nursing homes, later transitioning to 20 years of employment for Upstate Cerebral Palsy of Utica as a resident counselor.

During her employment for UCP, Kathleen was on staff at the Trenton Road, IRA (North Utica), facility and it was here that Kathleen’s talents and attributes of being a kind, compassionate and loving caregiver and person shone. For twenty years, the Trenton Road IRA became Kathleen’s second home and the residents became a part of her family. She often enjoyed entertaining the residents at picnics which she hosted at her residence.

On May 16, 1970, Kathleen was united in marriage with John A. Lukaszek at St. Paul’s Church, Whitesboro.

Thereafter, the couple lived on Elm St., Yorkville, until 1993, when they relocated to their home near Remsen.

Mrs. Lukaszek attended St. Ann’s Church, Hinckley. She greatly enjoyed the outdoors and wild life, especially spending time in the sunshine. She was also an animal lover who had a tender heart for all animals and greatly enjoyed her canine companions.

In addition to her husband, John, Kathleen is survived by her children, Kimberly (Ronald) Scouten, Forestport and Ryan (Melissa) Big Moose; grandchildren, Michael Scouten and Abigail Scouten, both of Forestport; one brother, Thomas (Judy) Davis, Whitesboro; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Wojtanowski, Utica and Phylis (Carmen) Carzo, NY Mills; and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special lifetime friends, Richard and Laurie Zerdecki and Sharon Wameling; and her beloved canine companion, “Jackson.”

She was predeceased by sisters, Bonnie Williams and Doris Trojan; and a sister-in-law, Josephine Ryczek.

Kathleen’s family extends a note of special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Mian and his staff at the Faxton Hemodialysis Unit and Dr. Carrillo and his staff for all of the compassion care which they gave to Kathleen over the years.

Poland Library News Poland Public Library is sponsoring a summer reading program for children ages 2-13. Each child my choose a small prize for every five books read.

Story time for ages 2 to 11 will be at 11a.m. every Tuesday through August 9th.

Children’s crafts for ages 2 to 11 will be held between 11a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday through August 11th.

Pokemon Program drop in between 1 and 4p.m. on Wednesday, August 3rd. Donna Mucks will be our children’s entertainer on Wednesday August 10th at 3 p.m. The ZooMobile will be here at 3p.m. August 17th.

All children’s programs are funded through the Community Foundation. Stewarts Shops donated funds for the summer reading activities.

Little Free Library on Kayuta Lake Now open! A Little Free Library has been installed on the shores of Kayuta Lake!

Moseman camp – southeastern shore of the middle section of the lake Little Free Library was started in 2009 by Todd H. Bul in tribute to his mother.

Today there are 150,00 Little Free libraries in all 50 states and 91 countries.

Little Free Library is a free sharing book exchange. Take a book, share a book. You do not need to share a book in order to take one Located on the shore of Kayuta Lake, this library box is only accessible by water. Look for the green box about four feet tall by the big boulder. Pull your

kayak, boat, or party barge up to the shore and peruse the variety of books inside

the box – best sellers, classics, mystery, etc!
