The Holland Patent Central Class of 2022 opted to not have graduation in the village park but instead on the school’s football field. One of the reasons was that they got to have fireworks and the other was the graduation parade. This parade has been a real hit for the newer generation as they drive from GWF Elementary to the high school. There are floats, wonderful cars and often the whole family enjoys the ride. Due to an unforeseen holiday, graduation coverage will be in the July 7th issue. Above is Hunter Maunz enjoying celebrity status.

A Prospect Cemetery Walking Tour with Cindy Richard will be held on Saturday, June 25th at 10 AM. Participants should plan to meet at the Prospect Library before proceeding to the cemetery. In the event of inclement weather, the entire program will be held at the library.

This ‘Sucker’ (Latin, vitulamer) is called ‘sweet’ when fished from the creeks chill & cold. Often, have I easily caught these bottomfeeders known for its tiny/bones/ But, when I caught the 2 – 15” - ‘ers from the cold West Canada Creek (between Nobleboro and Hinckley I decided to try as ‘survival-meat’ the Sweet-Suckers.

I quickly cut/off the heads, tails and fins and from pushing a sharp-knife under skin easily pulled down.

Dressed, the bare fish looked prepare for the batter.

So, I took my 2 well-dressed Suckers into Forestport Diner. The Owner/chef-helper assured the Sucker would be Utica Club beer battered. Yes, the well, very, very well; dark brown, crispy-well is key to cooking the Sucker –easily caught and very edible ‘Survival-meat’…bon appetite

The Gales of November Came Early Every year on the opening day of Bass season, our friend Lloyd Weigel and his group Advanced Stratagies Adventures have a fund raiser fishing derby on Oneida lake.

Traditionally, bass season has always opened in the third Saturday in June, however, this winter the DEC changed that opener to a hard date of June 15th so now the tournament is held the first Saturday on or after June 15th.

On this day, I took my friends Jim and Tom along. It’s the same crew I had last year for the event when we caught the 6 and a half foot Sturgeon.

We weren’t expecting to repeat that feat but just have some fun and catch a few fish. For several days leading up to the event I

was watching the weather.

The winds were predicted to be 15-25 MPH from the North West. I usually just fish the East end of the lake and knew if that forecast held true there was no way we could fish the East end.

After a little research I decided to launch out of a spot on the West end. Im not at all familiar with that area but i figured it’s a good time to try something new and figure it out.

We only fished about 3 hours before the winds became too strong to continue and we headed back to the launch. We were in for a rough ride.

Half way back to port I put the song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on and changed the words

Singing Hills Seniors GOOD NEWS - Seniors are gathering again. We will have our usual cards, games, and coffee and you are welcome to bring snacks. We hope to begin other activities as soon as we are able. PROOF OF COVID VACCINE WILL BE REQUIRED. NO EXCEPTIONS. We are now collecting dues for this year. All new members will be asked to fill out an application and medical form. Our dues for Town of Trenton residents will be $8 and non-residents will be $15. If you haven’t paid yet please do so as soon as possible so we can update our directory.

We are continuing our monthly 50-50 drawings and appreciate your participation. We are also still collecting pull tabs, stamps, and Campbells labels for education.

Being a HP graduate of the Class of 1966, I was quite saddened to receive another update via the obituaries of two fellow classmates - Richard (Dick) LaPointe, 2/7/22, and Pauline (Penny Farr) Clarkin, 2/22/22. To say the least, things have really changed since the '60's. I have fond memories of both these classmates which I'd like to share to listening ears.

Seeing Dick's Marine picture reminded me of just how he looked during our high school daze. We played some sports together but my fondest memory of Dick was his uncanny ability on the TRAMPOLINE - WHAT? Yes! Back then we were permitted to hurt/injure ourselves playing. We didn't have an x-box, computers, iphones or wokeness. I can still visualize Dick bouncing and flipping with a big smile and arms circling. Dick was so good that school officials asked him to put on demonstrations during half- time at basketball games. His big smile indicated he enjoyed the demonstration as much as those watching in ahhh. Dick won the Class Poll for "Best Dressed".

Penny, AKA Flyer, as some of her cheerleading members referred to her back then. Penny was extremely active in clubs, music, sports, student counsel - you name it and Penny liked to get involved. Even after graduation Penny was part of the class reunion planners.

She would always come to gatherings with a can-do attitude, ideas, and great interaction skills. These same skills helped her in 'real life' as she started/ran two local businesses: "PennyWise Real Estate" where she would help you get started in life with your first family home.

Penny's other business would help you with your last plans "Clarkin Memorials". My fondest recall of Penny was all the 'stuff the bus' rides throughout the school year going to and back from sporting events. During these rides was when coaches, players, cheerleaders and assistants were all confined on a bus giving the 'funniest' students/coaches many opportunities to joke and nudge other riders. Penny always held her own with ability not only to take it - but to dish it out - right back at you. I'll bet that's the 'wise' in her real estate??? Penny won the Class Poll for 'Everybody's Friend'.

Two of my Exploring Partners I have had many dog companions that explored with me over the years. I would like to talk about two of them.

When my dog disappeared a friend who took in unwanted dogs wanted me to come and see a beautiful golden retriever she had. After a couple of weeks I went to meet her.

She came home with me but she just sat in front of the cabin door. I thought about going back to my friend as I wasn’t sure it would work out, but it did! I named her Girl. We explored rivers, went mountain climbing. She was the smartest dog I’ve ever known and very well liked. She was allowed to go into any store I went to. Girl spread her love around.

After she passed away, I was at the time working at a saw mill. My boss told me that someone dropped off a couple of dogs. Neighbors found the black lab and she had a good home. The other dog was chasing deer to stay alive and they couldn’t get him. They were searching for him with rifles.

One day I was coming home from work and I spotted him.

He was a big, beautiful Malamute. So I just stopped the car and opened my car door and stood there and said… well come on. He bolted to the car and Yukon Jack and I had many years of great hikes and exploring. He was a wonderful companion.

Girl and Yukon will always have a special place in my heart, and yours too I hope, readers!

One of my most memorable explorations with dogs was several years ago. Four dogs that lived with me and one puppy went for longs romps every day through woods and fields. Two or three neighbor dogs would show up- my dogs never barked. How they knew I never knew. This pack and I had many happy times together.

2022 Memorial Day Parade in Holland Patent

by Barb Daily For only a moment the dark and spotty clouds threatened that the Memorial Day Parade of 2022 would be dampened and the crowds that lined the Holland Patent streets dismayed. One onlooker claimed “No, this’ll pass.”

Here were many having served and all honoring others who had served their country, the attendees to this ten o’clock start having positioned their chairs along the route as early and nine on this Monday morning. The wait and anticipation

might have seemed lengthy but for the frolicking laughter and squeals of the little ones in attendance with their parents as they climbed walls, jumped the creek bed and challenged one another in reckless pursuits.

A perfectly respectful silence was brought by a duo trumpeting of taps after which the repetitive “Left-right-left-right” announced the start of the parade.

Slowly the marchers passed as they gave way to the bright yellow sports car which carried Admiral Ronald Boxall of the United States Navy who would later speak to the gathered Americans at the Holland

Then came the procession of antique autos carrying volunteer groups with flags “a-waving”.

Stately and ringing of days of old came the huge red wagon being drawn by its team of groomed and fancy-harnessed draft horses. Such a sight.

U n d e r s c o r i n g Americana marched the ladies auxiliary, scouts of all representation with their volunteer leaders and to follow, a team of Golden Knights and cheerleaders, their recent achievements known throughout the community.

Onlookers continued their clapping of appreciation as they watched the Star Ambulance, HP firefighters, Barneveld Fire Department, and Western’s Yellow Fire Salvage followed by a few more marchers.

Families of proud Americans dispersed quietly and the streets resumed their constant flow of traffic, some to the east and some to the west adding bustle and activity to this lively village on this warm and sunny Memorial Day.

Flag Retirement Rite Held by NSDAR On Saturday, June 11th, 2022, members of the Holland Patent Chapter NSDAR hosted a flag retirement ceremony at the Leon H. Roberts American Legion Post 161 in Holland Patent.

Also helping to prepare the flags for retirement and joining in the ceremony were Children of the American Revolution, NYDAR District V Director Mary Cardinale, Fort Stanwix DAR Chapter Regent Erin Gurdak, Astenrogen DAR Chapter Regent-Elect Naomi Starsiak, and Skenandoah DAR Chapter Regent Sue Bowley, as well as members of the Legion, Auxiliary, and community members.

On December 5, 1953, Margaret married Clarence C. Burley Sr. and together they shared six children.

Margaret worked at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rite Aid Warehouse and on various local farms throughout the years. She was an active member of every community in which she resided. An accomplished and passionate artist, Margaret exhibited and sold many of her paintings at local galleries and art shows. She was an avid reader, one of the things she was best known for, sometimes reading a new book start-to-finish in a day.

She shared her love of reading with treasured friends in her Fiction Lovers book group for many years. As a lifetime nature admirer,

Margaret would go hiking daily at Delta Lake State Park, where she could often be found even before sunrise.

She loved bird watching and photographing wildlife on her trails. She would frequently stop along the way to sketch images of plants, flowers and animals that she observed while hiking. She was a past member of the Tramp and Trail Club, and previously attended the Unitarian Universalist Church in Utica, NY. Notably, she had an incredible and clever sense of humor. She was always prepared with a well-timed, quick-witted joke and loved a good political comic.

Margaret is survived by her children, Elaine Mororui (Stan Borek), Barbara McCauley (David), Clarence Burley (Colleen), Carolyn Michik (David), Sarah

Finley, and stepson Kenneth Burley (Barb), all of Rome; grandchildren, Brian Burley (Michelle), Shaun Patrick (Sherry), Melanie Patrick, Andrew Michik, Eileen Michik (Aarron), Elizabeth Finley (Zack), and Danielle Scott (Christopher); several great grandchildren including Matthew (Brittany), Lily, Shaun, Adeline, Arizona, Lincoln, Riley, Greyson, and Alexandra and two great great grandchildren, Karter and Dominick. Margaret also leaves behind her brother, John Wilhelmsen (Shirley), former son-in-law, Mike Finley, close family friend, Donald Budlong Jr. and many nieces and nephews including Julie and Janice with whom she shared a special relationship. She will be missed by beloved family dog, Sadie with whom she spent many of her final years

spoiling with love and treats.

Margaret is predeceased by husband, Clarence C. Burley Sr., son, Roger Burley, sister, Karla Hallum, granddaughter, Kara Mororui, grandson, Michael Burley and son-inlaw, Robert Michik.

In keeping with Margaret’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Immediate family will be gathering privately at Delta Lake State Park where Margaret enjoyed spending so much of her time. If you wish to donate in honor of Margaret’s memory, the family has requested that you contribute to the following cause that she held so dear to her heart: Great Swamp Conservancy.

Golden Maple Tree Inn

Lawrence W. Beaudin, 90, of Poland, died on June 8, 2022 at his home.

Mr. Beaudin was born on June 14, 1931 in Moira, NY, a son of the late Joseph and Olive (Ayers) Beaudin. He graduated from Poland Central School in 1951. That same year he entered the U. S. Army and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 at the rank of Corporal. On January 23, 1954, Lawrence was united in marriage with the former Katherine Frinkle at the First Baptist Church of Rome. Lawrence worked at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, and later became a medical supply supervisor at the USMA Keller Army Hospital, West Point, NY where he retired in 1986 after 35 years.

Survivors besides his wife of 68 years, Katherine, include two daughters, Colleen Beaudin of Poland, and Laureen (Chris) Curley of Tolland, CT; a grandson, Nick Curley of Tolland, CT; a sister, Charlotte (Rev. Fred) Rogers of Poland; a sister-inlaw, Wilma Beaudin of the Town of Ohio, and many loving nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. Lawrence was predeceased by seven siblings, Lester, Edgar and Joseph Beaudin, Melford

Beaudwin, Clifford Burdette, Violet Ellis, Louise Vodron; and two step-brothers, Chuck and Doug Ainsworth.

Calling hours were at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street. His funeral service was held with Pastor Walter Tomasik of the First Baptist Church of Newport, officiating. Interment followed in Pine Grove Cemetery where military honors were accorded by the U.S. Army Honor Guard.

Sandra “Sandy” Thayer Sandra “Sandy” Thayer Gibson, 75, of Bluffton, SC passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Sandy was born in Utica, NY to Donald and Helen Thayer. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and giving back to her community.

Sandy received an EducationBachelor’s Degree in business education at the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, NY and a Master of ScienceDegree in health care administration from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. She enjoyed a long career as a human resources executive, specializing in administration for large hospital and health care organizations in the Northeast and in Madison, Wisconsin. After retiring, Sandy focused her considerable talents on serving the community in various organizations as a volunteer and board member. She became an avid genealogy researcher, which led to her extensive involvement in the local chapters of several societies, including the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Colonial DamesXVII Century, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants,the Daughters of the Union, the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, and the First Families of Massachusetts. Sandy served as registrar for the Emily Geiger Chapter of the DAR in Bluffton for several years, as well as the local chapters of two other societies. The Emily Geiger Chapter recently honored Sandy for her contributions via the Daughter’s Tribute in the DAR Memorial Garden in Washington, D.C. Sandy is survived by her husband of 51 years, John Gibson; a daughter, Cary Gibson; a son, Michael Gibson; grandchildren, Logan and Katherine Gibson; sisters, Carol Thayer and Janice Jones; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Donald (Butch) Thayer.

A memorial service will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, 7479 Main Street, Newport on Tuesday, June 28th at 11:00 a.m. with Mr. Ken McCluskey, officiating. A calling hour will take place prior to the the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m..

Inurnment will follow in Prospect Cemetery.

James F. Bidwell James F. Bidwell, 58, of Westernville, passed away June 9, 2022, after a long courageous battle with COPD. He was born on May 28, 1964, in Rome, to Robert S. and Carol (Bathrick) Bidwell. A graduate of RFA he went on to earn a degree from the airline industry. Jim loved to travel and always wanted to work in the airline industry, so it only made sense that he would go on to work for American Airlines. He was a training manager and his responsibilities included writing curriculum for new employees. Over his many years at AA, working in both Dallas and Tulsa he made many lifelong friends. For over 25 years they would come from all over the world to his families camp on Panther Lake and then to the family compound at Lake Delta. He enjoyed cooking and eating great food and spending time with his family and friends.

Jim is survived by his loving parents; a brother, Robert L. Bidwell (Susan); sisters, Kay Jo Bidwell, and Kristin Bidwell; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; and his extended group of friends.

His amazing mind, wit and love of family will not be forgotten.

Barbara Elaine Hovey Novaes Barbara Elaine Hovey Novaes, 61, beloved daughter, mother, sister, and aunt, joined her dad and passed into the hands of our Lord upon her untimely death on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at her home in Medford, MA. Barb’s life was a gift to all who knew her, and she filled it with love. Her infectious smile would light up a room, and her hugs were frequent and fully enveloping.

Barb was born on March 28,1961 in Utica, NY to Ronald Hovey Sr. and Gertrude Briggs Hovey. Barb was a graduate of Whitesboro High School, Class of 1979, where she was active in cheerleading, A’Cappella choir, field hockey, yearbook committee, prep band, Spanish Club, the float committee, her sorority, and amassing friends. Outside of school she played the violin, organ, flute, and also Whitestown softball. She was a graduate of SUNY Delhi and SUNY IT. With a rich and eclectic work history, which included doing makeup artistry for Chanel and managing a hotel’s VIP wing, Barb finally settled into her position as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager at Everett Cooperative Bank, where she was a valued employee and cherished friend to colleagues and customers.

Barb was a woman of endless talents. She was quite creative, whether cooking her specialty gourmet dishes, sharing her angelic singing voice, or teaching ESL in Brazil as Barb was multilingual. She was a die-hard Red Sox fan in a family of Yankee devotees. She always enjoyed her time by the water, either on an ocean’s beach or lakeside in the Adirondacks, reading a favorite book. More recently she was content to sit on her back porch watching the birds, especially the cardinal she viewed as her daily visit from Dad. Supported and restored by her Christian faith, Barbie strived to make everyone she met feel appreciated, validated, and loved. Of course, her children, Marina and Alan, were her world, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. She also cherished her Emery Street neighborhood, and Grace Episcopal and Everett Cooperative families, especially noting her friends Kristen, Sue, Maria, Liz, Marge, and Pauline.

Barbara is survived by: her beloved children; Marina Hovey Novaes and Alan Hovey Novaes and their father, Fernando Sergio Ribeiro Novaes (and her fur grandbaby, Lincoln); her mother, Gertrude Hovey (Marcy, NY); her siblings, Linda and William Schmitt (Whitesboro, NY), Ronald and Heather Hovey (Holland Patent, NY), Roger and Melissa Hovey (Deerfield, NY), and her sister by heart, Mary Johnson (Clayville, NY). She doted on her nieces and nephews: Michael Schmitt, Amara (Ryan) Emmons, Adam (Taylor)

John P. “Jack” Butler John P. “Jack” Butler, 90, of Newport, died on June 11, 2022 at MVHS St. Luke’s Campus, New Hartford.

Mr. Butler was born on May 19, 1932 in Newport, a son of the late Edward and Ellen (Enright) Butler. He graduated from West Canada High School in 1950 and furthered his education at Canton Agricultural and Technical College where he played on the basketball and baseball teams. On September 20, 1958, John was united in marriage with the former Janice Schrader at St. John's Church, Newport. John worked as a quality assurance engineer for various companies in central New York, including Univac, Union Fork and Hoe, Momentum and Hamilton Digital Controls from where he retired. Jack was a past member of the Newport Volunteer Fire Company, a former trustee for the Village of Newport and St. John’s Church, where he was a member.

Survivors besides his wife Janice of 64 years, include a daughter, Linda M. Butler of Ilion, two sons, John E. (Shelby) Butler of Newport and Paul J. (Tracy) Butler of Poland; grandsons, Matthew Butler (Bianca Silfa) of Boston, MA, Eric (Brooke) Butler of North Brookfield, MA, and Kyle Butler (Taylor Allen) of Poland; granddaughters, Mariah Butler (Dalton Rowan), Elise Butler, and Whitney Butler all of Poland; a great-grandson, Beauden Butler; a sister, Marguerite Herring of Poland; sisters-in-law, Shirley Casadonte of Newport, and Ruth Butler and Joyce Schrader, both of Herkimer. Janice’s siblings, Joyce (Tony) Casale of Mohawk, Armeda Labreche of Herkimer, Alan (Karen) Schrader of Fairfield, and Harold (Mary) Schrader of Chehalis, WA. John was predeceased by seven siblings, William, Robert and James Butler, Mildred Snyder, Katherine Berg, Marion Philips, and Elva Carney.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John’s Church, Newport. with Rev. Terence Healy, officiating.

Interment followed in St. John's Cemetery.

Poland Central’s Class of 2022 Valedictorian, Salutatorian Poland Central School District Class of 2022 valedictorian Caimin Roark and salutatorian Nathan Draper credit their achievements to putting in the time and hard work academically.

“I’m one of those people who has to have everything done right when it’s due,” Roark said. “Before I can enjoy my time or my weekends, everything has to be done, so I usually do homework on Fridays, just trying to get everything done, so I can relax a little bit. So I guess my mindset was more of just getting the work done as efficiently as possible.”

Draper also said the key was figuring out when to fit in the time needed to learn effectively.

“Doing three sports, it’s hard to find that time after school, but it’s after games, putting in that extra one or two hours of studying and still being able to push through practice and stuff after school,” Draper said.

Both students took on a demanding course load on their way to their achievements. Roark will graduate with 25.5 local credits and 30 college credits through Herkimer College. She will receive a Regents diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Math and Science. Draper will graduate with 32.5 local credits and 32 college credits through Herkimer College. He will receive a Regents diploma with Advanced Designation with Honors and Mastery in Science.

Valedictorian Roark is the daughter of A.J. and Carrie Roark, of the

town of Ohio.

She said her parents are another reason she was able to become valedictorian.

“My parents really pushed me,” she said. “They always wanted me to really do well.

I wanted to basically make them proud, so I really worked hard.”

Roark said becoming valedictorian wasn’t something she thought of as a goal, but she did focus on being a high achiever, doing the work and keeping her grades up. She said she was a little bit surprised as she realized she would become the valedictorian, and she was glad to reach the achievement.

“It was always in the back of my mind,” she said. “I worked hard throughout school.”

When she found out officially that she is the valedictorian, she didn’t say much to others about it because she wanted to stay humble.

“I was really proud of myself,” she said. “I definitely felt like it was a huge accomplishment.”

Roark plans to attend the radiology program at Mohawk Valley Community College with an ultimate goal of becoming a fetal ultrasound technician.

“I’ve always been very outgoing, and I know with that career, you have to be able to talk to people and walk them through what’s going on because it’s a very exciting part of their life, but it’s also a little scary for people that haven’t been through it before,” Roark said. “And I also really enjoy working with children, but I didn’t want to work with a lot of children at once, so at least there, I can see the growth and see the excitement the parents are feeling, while also making sure everything’s all right, and working in the medical field.”

Roark said going to school at Poland prepared her well for her next steps. Going to Poland allowed her the opportunity to work closely with teachers and hone her skills before moving on to college, where she doesn’t anticipate being able to work as closely with teachers, she said.

“Poland is one of those schools where you get to know everybody, and you become really close with all your teachers and all the students, and I think that helped,” she said. “I think that’s really one of the best things about Poland is probably just how small-town feel it is.”

During high school, Roark played varsity basketball and softball, served as the Class of 2022 Vice President and was a member of the National Honor Society, Poland Student Council and Varsity Club.

Roark said teachers that were particularly influential for her include English teacher Tracy Theilmann,

Valedictorian Caimin Roark science teacher Jessica Meyer and English teacher Michael Gagnon.

“I would definitely say Mrs. Theilmann because I have a lot of classes with her this year, and she always was there for me if I ever asked questions on anything,” Roark said. “Mrs. Meyer was always an enjoyable teacher I had. I would say Mr. Gagnon. I really liked working with him too.

He was definitely one of the teachers I would go to if I ever needed help, regardless of the issue.”

As Roark wraps up her time in high school, she is also preparing for her valedictorian speech at the Poland Class of 2022 graduation on June 24. She said she is a little bit nervous because she tends to talk faster when she is nervous and in front of people, but she is taking a public speaking class and thinks that will help her talk slower and more clearly for her speech.

“I’m also kind of excited because I would like to be able to leave my mark on the class, and at least, hopefully with my speech, people will remember a little bit of it,” she said.

Salutatorian Draper is the son of Ron and Jennifer Draper, of the town of Deerfield.

After his brother, Poland 2019 graduate Devin Draper, narrowly missed out on being salutatorian, it made Draper want to reach a top spot even more.

“I know my brother worked really hard, and he was just a tenth of a point short or something like that, and then when I got it, I was really excited about it,” Draper said. “It’s something I’ve been wanting – to get either one or two. It’s nice to see that your hard work has paid off.”

Draper said he knew he was No. 2 in his class entering the 2021-22 school year behind Roark and sometimes thought about how he did on tests versus how Roark and others did.

“I was trying to catch her, but she was too far,” he said.

In general, his academic rank has mostly always been in the back of his mind, he said.

“Taking advanced classes with everyone, you’re kind of comparing your grades,” he said. “That competition

In the end, it was nice to see that he ended up as salutatorian, he said.

During high school, Draper served as the Class of 2022 president, served as the 2021-22 student member of the Poland Board of Education, represented Poland at the New York State Education Department’s Digital Equity Summit, attended American Legion Boys State, participated in the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Government Intern program with the Herkimer County Legislature, was a member of National Honor Society and the Poland Student Council and played varsity baseball, basketball and soccer.

Draper plans to attend Mohawk Valley Community College for engineering science before transferring to another college. His goal is to ultimately work in mechanical engineering.

Going to school at Poland prepared Draper for his college and career goals, he said.

“I think the College Now courses have been insanely helpful for us, and the fact that it was free for us has helped so much too,” he said. “The teachers, they up the degree of difficulty in those courses – it’s not just a high-school course, and it kind of gives you more insight into what you’re going to face next year.”

Draper named mathematics teacher Scott Kurdziolek as an influential teacher for him.

“I’m going into engineering next year at MV, so math is obviously the key subject in that field, so it’s been nice to have Mr. K,” Draper said.

“He just kind of connects with his students. People feel really comfortable around him – at least in my calculus class. It’s not really like a lecture when he teaches – it’s more like a discussion between the students and him, which is nice.”

With a few weeks left of his time in high school, Draper said he has been brainstorming and preparing for his salutatorian speech for much longer than that.

“I think I’ve been thinking about it for two or three years now,” he said. “I don’t want to give anything away, but I’m very excited for it.”

with the help of instructor Jill Rae Vennera and a sip or two of wine as you create your own patriotic painting that you can use to decorate your home during the 4th of July holiday. The $40 fee includes paints, 16” x 20” canvas, instruction, adult beverage, and light snacks.

Our instructor, Jill Rae Vennera, is the owner of Easels on the Gogh, a full service mobile painting studio, and Jill Rae Signs. She has a degree in Fine Arts and Art Therapy. Easels on the Gogh hosts parties for adults, children, schools, colleges, and nursing homes.

Everything you will need for your creation will be supplied. Everyone is an Artist!
