Jacob Olearczyk of Barneveld recently won the New York State Amateur U14 Golf Championship this year. This is one of the biggest events for an amateur to win in New York State. Jacob was also a member of the Holland patent varsity golf team this past school year as an 8th grader at the Holland Patent Middle School.

They have been painting the benches, picnic tables, trash bins, doing landscaping and placed a brick walk way at the entrance of the bandstand. 95th Steuben Old Home Days -August 28 and 29, 2021 2021 will mark the 95th year for the Old Home Day Celebration to be held at Steuben Corners. This will continue to be a very different celebration with all of the restrictions from the covid-19 issues that continue to alter our activities.

The planning committee is very determined to continue the long-term tradition of a great roast pork dinner. Our efforts for 95 years have been to support the 4 rural cemeteries in the Town of Steuben and the Methodist Women's Group at Steuben Methodist Church. The original Old Home Day Activities were started by the Women's Group. These cemeteries rely on this fundraising effort to keep the cemeteries mowed and clean. The Women's Group uses their funds for local missions and community needs.

This year we will not be able to hold our auction, lawn mower pulls or the corn hole tournament. Without these

Rural Star This technique offers me the best chance to get close to big mature bucks in the easiest way possible but its also the challenge of it going one on one with a mature deer in woods that’s so remote that some parts have never been seen by a person.

The third is for food. Even if one hunts and fishes for food, which is totally fine, I will argue that the main goal is because you like doing it. I could buy a heck of a lot more groceries than the food I’d get hunting or fishing with the money I spend on those hobbies however it’s a valid reason. Some fish and game can be a healthier alternative to store bought processed food.

As long as you are doing it legally, I would never try to tell someone that my way, or my reason is the best. If someone got more fun from doing it your way, they probably would be doing it your way! (This lesson could probably be used in life in general) I’ve had to leave some Facebook pages that I used to follow because of people chastising people because of a kill or a catch

It’s Supposed To Be Fun Hunting and fishing are hobbies. They are for recreation. There are 3 things I believe that most people get from hunting and fishing that I believe lead to the goal of getting enjoyment from them. These things are relaxation, challenge and food. I also believe there are many ways to accomplish these 3 things and my way isn’t better than the next guys.

Relaxation is number one.

Sometimes I know the fishing might be better in the next bay over but I’m comfortable here hanging out listening to tunes over some beers with a buddy and 2 lines hanging over the side.

Certain days I like to just

chill on the lake and other days I’ll change my lures every 15 minutes until I find something that works and drive from one end of the lake to the other 5 times.

Another is the challenge. I didn’t start out being one, but I am now primarily a deer tracker. I don’t get excited about deer hunting unless there’s snow in the forecast. I used to sit on stand and do drives with my friends.

Drives can be fun and ill still sit on occasion if there’s no snow but for the most part I like to track bucks in the big woods. Mostly in the Adirondacks but also in Maine and lately Massachusetts. I feel that

Page 3 they post or the technique they used to harvest it. Catch and release is great but if its legal to keep certain fish and you want to eat it go ahead. If you want to fill your buck tag with a spike horn and that makes you happy then go ahead. Just remember that’s your one tag. Don’t let anyone tell you different, obey the harvest limits and don’t waste it.

Whatever your reason, or if you’re new to hunting or fishing, get out more and do it. There are so many options in our area and Ill cover that in the next issue!

2021 marks the second year in a row that the Woodsmen’s Field Days has been put on hold due to the Covid pandemic.

But there has been a new tradition started by Charlie’s Liquors store owners Deniese Haskins and Guy Case.

“We wanted to offer something special for those attending the Woodsmen’s event,” Haskins said in a 2020 interview with the Rome Daily Sentinel. “You get to know the people who come for Woodsmen’s weekend year after year. We do wine tasting during the weekend and people come in and talk and it is so much fun. You get to know them and their families.”

Last year Charlie’s Liquors teamed up with Prospect Wines with a limited edition wine set called, “Wood a’ Been Woodsmen’s” wines. Haskins designed the label specially to honor the Woodsmen's field Days.

This year the wine labels honor the late Charles “Skipper” Finley, of Oswegatchie who appears on the red wind bottle label, and Albert “Sunny” Reilly, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, who appears on the white wine bottle label. Both were legendary loggers who always attended the Woodsmen’s weekend.

On August 19, 20 and 21 there will be a special wine tasting, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Charlie’s Liquors located 102 Railroad Ave, Boonville.

According to the Rome Sentinel report The Wishin’ For Woodsmen’s wines are a collaboration between Charlie’s Liquor and Prospect Falls Winery. The red wine features the Prospect Falls All Alone. This red pomegranate wine has flavors of strawberry jam and sweet apple juice. The white wine features the Prospect Falls Moosecato, a sweet, light, bright white that features hints of peaches and other fruit.

Ticks and Lyme Disease Lyme Disease and other Tick-borne Diseases We all need to be careful when we go out to do yard work, clean up or just a leisurely stroll through the woods. Below are some helpful hints regarding ticks and Lyme disease.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and local health departments continue to investigate the spread of Lyme disease throughout New York State. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected deer tick. Untreated, the disease can cause a number of health problems.

Patients treated with antibiotics in the early stage of the infection usually recover rapidly and completely.

Since Lyme disease first became reportable in 1986, over 95,000 cases have now been confirmed in New York State.

The NYSDOH and local health departments also investigate several other tick-borne diseases, including babesiosis, ehrlichiosis (both human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human monocytic ehrlichiosis) and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. These tick-borne diseases are most frequently found on Long Island and in the lower Hudson Valley region. The number of cases of these diseases is much smaller in comparison to the cases of Lyme disease but their numbers are also increasing.

There are many different products on the market, with different ingredients, concentrations and effectiveness. The most effective contain DEET, permethrin (only to be applied on clothing), picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. If you decide to use one, be sure to follow label directions and apply repellent carefully.

Rechargeable batteries placed in household recycling bins can become damaged during transportation and cause fires in trucks or facilities. They can harm drivers, workers, and firefighters who are your neighbors in your community.

To properly dispose of batteries, take the following steps: • Never put any batteries in your household recycling bin with your plastic, metal, glass and paper • Identify if your batteries are single-use, rechargeable or lead-acid batteries • If batteries are single use it’s actually acceptable to discard them in the trash. Check with your local recycling program- your county or municipality may have recycling options for single-use batteries • If batteries are rechargeable and covered under the NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act do not dispose of them in the trash. Find a collection location at a retail center that sells rechargeable batteries, use the Call2RecycleProgram, or contact your local Recycling Coordinator to ask questions or sign up for a household hazardous waste event that may accept rechargeable batteries.

• If batteries are lead-acid (car, trucks, boats and other vehicles), return them to a retail location that sells them or other collection location for proper recycling.

• If you have electronic devices like tablets or cell phones that have rechargeable batteries inside, please review proper disposal for electronic waste and cell phones.

Singing Hills Seniors GOOD NEWS - Seniors have been given the go ahead to start gathering again. We will have our usual cards, games, and coffee and you are welcome to bring snacks. For the time being we will not have any in-house luncheons. We hope to begin other activities as soon as we are able. PROOF OF COVID VACCINE WILL BE REQUIRED. NO EXCEPTIONS. We are now collecting dues for the year. All members will be asked to fill out a new application and medical form so that the information is correct. Our dues will be pro-rated for 2021. The North American Festival of Wales comes back to Central New York after a twenty-five-year absence. This Labor Day Weekend the people of Welsh Ancestry from around the United States and Canada will meet in Utica to celebrate their Welsh heritage. The first festival was held in 1929 in Niagara Falls to accommodate both Americans and Canadians of Welsh descent. Since then, it has been held 89 times at various locations across North America.

Because Central New York was an early location of Welsh immigration beginning in 1795, Utica has been selected as a site four times previously for the Festival of Wales. The 2020 Festival was canceled due to Covid 19 concerns so this will be the first meeting of the Welsh since the 2019 Festival in Milwaukee WI. There will be Seminars, Concerts, Lectures, Field Trips, Welsh Song Fests (Gymanfa Ganu), Worship Services and Competitions (Eisteddfod). It all starts with a flag raising at Utica City Hall at 3:00 PM Thursday on September 2nd Headquarters will be the Delta by Marriott on Genesee Street with events at the Westminster-Olivet-Moriah Church, the Stanley Theater and other local attractions.

The events are on á la carte basis with single day attendance at $35. Evening banquets and evening concerts are priced separately. The day time events include lectures, movies, and seminars. There will be a marketplace where Welsh-themed books and craft items may be obtained. In addition, there will be a there will be a traditional competition called Eisteddfod.

Local talent is encouraged to participate and registration information is on the web page.

Evening events include various concerts, including the Grand Concert Saturday evening at the Stanley Theater and ad hoc group singing back at the hotel. Singing has always been a Welsh tradition. The Festival of Wales concludes on Sunday with two Welsh song fests (Gymanfa Ganu) at WestminsterOlivet-Moriah Church.

Organizers were pleased to select Utica because of the long Welsh history of the region and the availability of venues located in easy walking distance from each other. We strongly recommend an early registration for visitors who desire a hotel room as the two hotels listed on the web site have a group rate and are within easy walking distance of all the venues.

Mayfaire On The Green: 11th Year - August 21 & 22 It was the summer of my seventeenth year when I experienced my first Renaissance faire. The night before, I had put on the Heart album, Little Queen, while I planned an outfit to wear. As the music played, I assembled a gypsy outfit in a style similar to the garb worn by Ann and Nancy Wilson on the album cover. I had only heard of the wonders of the place that awaited me, yet I

knew I was already channeling the spirit of it as I resurrected my mom's peace beads and stood before the mirror.

The next day, as my boyfriend led me into a magical forest, a woman playing a gypsy character approached me. "Seestah," she said in an accent that I did not recognize, "it has been too long since I've seen you!" An introverted teenager, I was

completely dumbfounded. I wanted to respond to her, but words would not come. I could only gaze at her in awe and hope she understood that I was paralyzed by shyness, and not snubbing her. I did not know how to interact with the entertainers yet. But in that moment, in those woods, I saw what my life would one day be... a living fairy tale...

The experience was unfor-

gettable. And there were things about faire that, I now realize, influenced me on an unconscious level.

As teenagers, my friends and I were seeing a community of talented vendors and performers working at what they loved, showcasing their artistry. Looking back, I see that this planted a seed in me - the idea that there is a place for everyone in this world... the idea that artists are valu-

able, and that faire is a place where people who dance to the beat of a different drum are accepted and loved.

Years later, I would marry a man who shared my values and vision. Eleven years ago we started Mayfaire on the Green. We wanted to bring back a Renaissance Faire to the Holland Patent Village

Green, where we both remembered attending a faire in the 1980s. Our intention was to share magic, beauty, culture, and history. We hoped to see a community of like-minded individuals gather around our faire, an environment where creative people would enjoy a platform, a place.

Prominent Artists Featured in Fine Arts Exhibit at Historic Unity Hall September 25-26 Three Trenton Falls area fine artists, Martha Deming, Mary P. Murphy, and Lorraine VanHatten will present their work in the exhibit “The Barneveld 3 at Unity Hall” on Saturday, September 25 from 4:00 to 7:00 and Sunday, September 26 from 2:00 to 5:00. The Pandemic Therapy musical duo and members of the Junior B Sharp Musical Club will perform on Saturday; music on Sunday will be provided by the Junior B Sharp Club.

Refreshments will be available both days, and the event is free and open to the public.

Non-vaccinated visitors must wear a mask.

The artists will display works in watercolor, oil and pastel.

Ms. Deming of Remsen is well-known locally as a fine artist, judge and educator and works in transparent water-

color, pastel, and gouache.

Among her favorite subjects are the landscape around her and the flowers in her gardens. Ms. Murphy of Barneveld is also a watercolorist but has a growing interest in oils. She paints in plein air and in her studio, and her subjects include still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Ms. VanHatten, also of Barneveld, enjoys painting subjects that reflect where she has traveled. Working with a limited palette, she makes compositional changes to enhance the final painting. People and animals are frequent subjects, as are landscapes and flowers.

August 30 Metal Detecting Club Meeting On August 30th the EARTH Metal Detecting Club of Central New York will hold our August meeting at the Dunham Library on Main Street, Whitesboro. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

Now is the best time to join because on September 11, 2021 we hold the Awesome Club Picnic and Hunts.

The cost to join the club is $30 solo and $35 for the family. As a club member you will get a newsletter and you

Anthony Charles Casadonte NEWPORT – A. Charles Casadonte, Jr., 96, of North Street, died on August 6, 2021 at his home.

Anthony Charles Casadonte was born on September 28, 1924 in Herkimer, a son of the late Anthony C. and Esther (Miller) Casadonte. He received his education in Herkimer schools and entered the U. S. Army in 1943. Charlie served with Company B 111st Medical Battalion in Northern France and Rhineland during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was united in marriage to Lee R. Wilkinson on July 5, 1969; she preceded him in death on October 16, 1988. On August 19, 1994 he married Shirley (Agne) Butler.

For over 50 years, Charles held a distinguished career in the home heating industry. He was first employed for R. K. Casadonte Heating Oil and then for Mohawk Valley Oil Sunoco for many years.

Charlie loved his work and many of his family and

friends can attest to his skill and expertise shared on their own systems.

Charlie loved the outdoors.

His hobbies included golf, fly fishing, skiing, hunting, and wilderness camping.

Survivors, besides Shirley, his wife of 27 years, include eight children; his son Charles Casadonte and seven step children, Richard (Dee) Brennen, Edward Butler (Les Schoof), Alan (Lisa) Butler, Jody (Tim) Gray, Gary (Amy) Butler, Martin (Linda) Butler and Kelly (Robert) Vrooman; 17 grandchildren, Cheyenne (Andrew) Felker, Avery Brennen, Patrick, Brion, Kevin, and Tim Butler, James and Katie Butler, Molly and Karl Gray, Becky and Glen Butler, Elliot, Ryan and Sean Butler, and Bob and Alicia Vrooman; one great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Felker and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepson, James

(Fran) Butler; his siblings, Olive Piper and Robert and Raymond Casadonte; and his best friend George Cummings.

The family would like to say thank you to Heidi Broadbent, Courtney Kolwaite, Amy Hunt, Hope Lindsay, and Terri Stanistreet with a special thank you to family friend and neighbor, Lisa (Stave) Wiatr, for caring for Charlie with such love and compassion.

Paul E. Credle 1937 - 2021 REMSEN - Paul E. Credle, age 84, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed to greener pastures on August 5, 2021 after a brief illness at the Sitrin Rehabilitation Facility, New Hartford.

Born in Utica, on February 12, 1937, to the late Edward and Katherine (Zimmerman) Credle. He attended Remsen Central School, graduating in 1956. He attended St. Lawrence University for one year and returned to work for his father at Credle Equipment, Inc., in Schuyler.

On August 22, 1959, he married the love of his life, Barbara M. Burky, a union of almost 62 years.

Paul met his calling when he and Barb started the Methodist Youth Fellowship for the Remsen United Methodist Church. He continued his education at MVCC, Utica College, Upper Division (SUNY Utica), Colgate Rochester Divinity School & Conference Course of Studies at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC. He was certified in Elementary and Middle School Education, substituting in Oneida and Lewis Counties. He was an Ordained Deacon of the United Methodist Church in 1978 and Ordained Elder of the American Baptist Church in 1996. Paul served at Lee, Trenton, W. Schuyler, Asbury, Central and Hilltop (Ava) United Methodist Churches, Raquette Lake and Inlet Presbyterian Churches and Marcy Community Church, retiring in 2010.

Paul's story telling talent made his services personal and from the heart, the 'Highlight' of the service was the "Children's Sermon" as the children gathered, Paul brought out the music of laughter from the children, as well as the congregation! Many adventures organized for the Youth Fellowship included canoeing, hiking, biking, World Fair, Cape Cod, clown/puppet ministry, paper/can drives and the list goes on. Fond memories by all.

Vivian Francis Lair Huntington COLD BROOK - Vivian Francis Lair Huntington went to the Lord, August 6, 2021, after a brief illness.

Vivian was born in Lynchburg, VA, September 14, 1929, to Mary and Harry Lair. She was the fifth of six children. After graduating from Lynchburg High School in 1947 with academic honors (National Honor Society), Vivian worked as a receptionist for the F.L. Showalter Construction Company.

After Civil Service testing, Vivian set her sights on working for the Labor Department, Washington, DC. On October 18, 1952, Vivian married her love, Carroll Frederick Huntington. She stayed home to raise four children (born 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1962). Vivian's raising the kids never swayed as she was also a Cub Scout Leader and school board member supporter.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Carl, Harry and James; her sisters, Cathleen and Margaret; and her grandsons, Geoffrey Marks and Stuart Huntington.

She is survived by Carroll Huntington (husband); James, Richard Lowe and Kyle Huntington (son and grandsons); Gail, Bill, Sarah and Morgan Marks (daughter, son-in-law, granddaughter and grandson); Anne, Pat, Aaron and Cory Farley (daughter, son-in-law and grandsons); and Chuck Huntington (son).

Vivian will always be remembered for the many hats she wore raising four kids and her dedication and devotion to her family. Her second love, behind family, was her love for reading books and newspapers. In Mom's memory, always try to extend a kind word to somebody, whether it be a smile, said or written.

Funeral services will be, Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 6:00 p.m., at the Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 7944 Steuben St., Holland Patent, with Pastor Cindy Makarchuk officiating. Interment will be in the Pinegrove Cemetery, Newport, VT. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, prior to the service, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Linda Lee (Lynch) McConnell REMSEN, NY - Linda Lee (Lynch) McConnell, 73, passed away, with loving family by her side, Monday, August 10, 2021, at the Sunset Nursing Home, Boonville.

Linda was born in Utica, September 12, 1947, a daughter of the late John and Bertha (Sakowski) Lynch.

She was educated in local schools and a graduate of Utica Free Academy.

Linda was employed for many years as an LPN at Broadacres Nursing Facility. She later retired from Mele Manufacturing, where she was employed as a personal assistant.

Linda enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved cooking for them.

She is survived by her three sons and a daughter-inlaw, John DeLorenzo, of Remsen, Ronnie McConnell, of Alder Creek and Jan and Connie McConnell, of Remsen; a brother, Mike Lynch; and also many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Joseph DeLorenzo; a granddaughter, Jeny Laura; and Linda's husband, Ronald McConnell.

HOLLAND PATENT, NY - Patricia M. Coe, 82, of Holland Patent, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 with her loving family by her side. At the time of her passing, those she loved most were in her heart.

She was born on August 7, 1939, in Rome, NY and was educated in Whitesboro Schools. On August 18, 1956, Patricia was united in marriage to Claude Coe, Jr. in St. Paul's Church, Clinton and shared a blessed union of 64 years. Together with her husband, they owned and operated Elijah Park Farm, Holland Patent, for over 60 years as well as raising her beloved family.

Patricia was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and cherished every minute that she spent with them. She enjoyed playing cards, board games, talking on the phone and watching the Game Show Network. Patricia also enjoyed entertaining company and getting mail.

Surviving are her loving husband, Claude, Jr., Holland Patent; children, C. Lawrence E. Stave 1935 - 2021 NEWPORT – Lawrence E. Stave, 85, of School Street, died on August 6, 2021 at the Abraham House, Rome.

Mr. Stave was born on August 22, 1935, in Newport, a son of the late Roy and Mildred (Keyser) Stave. He received his education at the NYS School for the Deaf in Rome and was never married. In his early years, he worked at Northern Lumber Company, formerly of Poland. Larry was later employed in the construction trade as a carpenter. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed golf in earlier years.

Survivors include three sisters, Rose Reylea and Lila (Robert) Palmer, of Newport and Gloria Bates, of Poland; sister-in-law, Marlene Stave, of Utica; a special sister, Sherry Reynolds, of Frankfort; a special daughter, Amanda Stave, of RI; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Howard Stave.

Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Middleville Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are prior to the funeral on Tuesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Since completing his junior year in June, Poland Central School District student Nathan Draper has participated in the New York State Education Department’s Digital Equity Summit, attended American Legion Boys State and started as the student member of the Poland Board of Education.

“It’s been a very busy summer so far,” he said.

Draper, 17, will be a senior in the 2021-22 school year.

He is still deciding on a college and a major and is considering a career path of attending a law school and going into politics or attending a technology school and going into engineering. Either way, his recent leadership experiences should be very beneficial, he said.

where I can rally people together and get stuff done,” he said.

Draper, who plays soccer, baseball and basketball at Poland, said sports is what sparked his interest in leadership. Bringing those skills to other aspects of life such as school policies can make a true impact, he said.

“I think sports has really taught me a lot about leadership,” he said. “In sports, you see people step up and bring people together, so you can bring that more into the real world.”

Poland Principal Greg Cuthbertson, who is also Draper’s baseball coach, was an influence in Draper’s decisions to take on these opportunities.

These leadership roles should be very valuable for Draper – including the networking he has done through the Digital Equity Summit and Boys State and the information he’ll learn from Board of Education about functions, policies, procedures and the tone of meetings, Cuthbertson said. Draper also was one of the 2021 captains of the boys varsity basketball team, is a member of the National Honor Society, served in Student Council prior to pandemic restrictions on club activities and was elected by other students as class president in ninth, 10th and 11th grade.

“I’m proud of him,” Cuthbertson said. “I know he’s a hard-working kid. He’s going to put forth his best effort no matter what.”

Cuthbertson said he could tell from Draper’s actions on the baseball team and in the classroom that he would be a good representative of the school.

“He’s a team player,” Cuthbertson said. “He’s going to lead by example with his effort and his attitude.”

Digital Equity Summit The statewide Digital Equity Summit took place virtually on June 15 with about 300 attendees including students, teachers, principals, superintendents, government officials and other leaders from across the state. The goal of the event was to allow decision-makers to hear directly from students about increasing digital equity for all New York state students and how their experiences with virtual learning went during COVID-19.

Draper said it’s important

that the state held the Digital Equity Summit.

“Just so everybody can have the opportunity to learn equally,” he said. “If you don’t live in the right place or make as much money, you should still have the same equal access to education.”

After Cuthbertson received a call about the summit, he recommended it to Draper at baseball practice, and Draper decided to attend.

“The first person I thought of was Nathan,” Cuthbertson said. “We wanted someone who would be a good representative of Poland and would be able to express and articulate what they’re looking for.”

Draper experienced virtual learning at Poland in 2020 and had some Wi-Fi issues at times but was able to navigate those challenges and make it work, so he had good perspective to offer for the summit, Cuthbertson said.

The summit included breakout sessions where New York State Education Department officials heard directly from every student who attended. Students then submitted one thought about the topic, and all students voted on which thoughts they agreed the most with. The most popular opinions were then further discussed in front of the entire summit.

Draper submitted a comment that virtual learning results in no separation between home and school life, and that idea was one of the ones that received enough support to be a topic of discussion for the full conference.

“It was pretty cool to be able to represent our small, little school at a big, statewide conference,” Draper said.

Boys State After Draper played “Taps” at a local funeral, he was talking to American Legion members, and they recommended Boys State to him.

He had heard good things about it and knew that Cuthbertson and many political leaders had gone to Boys State, so he decided to go for it.

“I thought it would help with leadership abilities and public speaking and things like that,” he said.

After going through the application and interview process, Draper was selected to attend, and American Legion Post 1118 in Cold Brook sponsored him and

American Legion Boys State for New York state took place virtually from June 27 to July 1. The days began with live videos, daily routines and guest speakers.

Students were split into groups, and about half of the time was spent participating in mock elections – including writing speeches and campaigning – and the other half was spent doing the job you were elected to. Draper became a county legislator through the mock process.

“It was a lot of learning from the start,” he said. “It was very eye-opening for me about how the political process works.”

Cuthbertson said teacher recommendations about students such as their tendencies and interests from classroom discussions also play a role in decisions about selecting students for leadership opportunities.

“Just knowing what type of kid he is, I know he is interested in these types of things,” Cuthbertson said.

Cuthbertson also said Draper represents Poland well at larger events because he is, hard-working and smart.

“That’s what Poland is all about,” Cuthbertson said.

Board of Education Since district residents voted 129-38 in May 2015 to add an ex-officio student member to the Board of Education, Cuthbertson recommends a senior each year for the role, and he selected Draper for the 2021-22 school year.

“I was super excited to do it,” Draper said.

The student board member attends all public board meetings and participates in all board hearings and meetings, but does not attend executive sessions or have a vote.

If you own a small business, there are many retirement plan alternatives available to help you and your eligible employees save for retirement. For most closelyheld business owners, a Simplified Employee Pension Individual Retirement Account (SEP IRA) was once the most costeffective choice. Then the Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE IRA) became a viable alternative. Today you may find that a defined benefit or 401(k) plan best suits your needs. To make an informed decision on which plan is right for your business, review the differences carefully before you choose.

Simplified Employee Pension Individual Retirement Account (SEP IRA). This plan is flexible, easy to set up, and has low administrative costs. An employer signs a plan adoption agreement, and SEP IRAs are set up for each eligible employee. When choosing this plan, keep in mind that it does not allow employees to save through payroll deductions, and contributions are immediately 100% vested.

The maximum an employer can contribute each year is 25% of an employee’s eligible compensation, up to a maximum of $290,000 for 2021. However, the contribution for any individual cannot exceed $58,000 in 2021.

Employer contributions are typically discretionary and may vary from year to year.

With this plan, the same formula must be used to calculate the contribution amount for all eligible employees, including any owners.

Eligible employees include those who are age 21 and older and those employed (both part time and full time) for three of the last five years.

The maximum salary deferral limit to a SIMPLE IRA plan cannot exceed $13,500 for 2021. If an employee is age 50 or older before December 31, then an additional catch-up contribution of $3,000 is permitted. Each year the employer must decide to do either a matching contribution (the lesser of the employee’s salary deferral or 3% of the employee’s compensation) or nonmatching contribution of 2% of an employee’s compensation (limited to $290,000 for 2021). All participants in the plan must be notified of the employer’s decision each year no later than November 2nd for the upcoming year.

Defined benefit pension plan. This type of a plan may be a good solution for a profitable company with stable cash flow with intentions of benefitting employees over the age of 40. This type of plan can also help build savings quickly. It generally produces a much larger taxdeductible contribution for your business than a defined contribution plan; however,

Certain factors affect an employer’s contribution for a plan, such as current value of the plan assets, the ages of employees, date of hire, and compensation. A participating employee with a large projected benefit and only a few years until normal retirement age generates a large contribution because there is little time to accumulate the necessary value to produce the stated benefit at retirement. The maximum annual benefit at retirement is the lesser of 100% of the employee’s compensation or $230,000 per year in 2021 (indexed for inflation). This plan design should only be considered with the intention of significant, annual funding for a minimum of 5 years.

401(k) plans. This plan may be right for your company if you want to motivate your employees to save towards retirement and give them a way to share in the firm’s profitability. 401(k) plans are best suited for companies seeking flexible contribution methods.

When choosing this plan type, keep in mind that the employee and employer have the ability to make contributions. The maximum salary deferral limit for a 401(k) plan is $19,500 for 2021. If an employee is age 50 or older before December 31, then an additional catch-up contribution of$6,500 is permitted. The maximum amount you, as the employer, can contribute is 25% of the eligible employee’s total compensation (capped at $290,000 for 2021). Individual allocations for each employee cannot exceed the lesser of 100% of compensation or $58,000 in 2021 ($64,500 if age 50 or older). The alloca-

tion of employer profit-sharing contributions can be skewed to favor older employees, if using ageweighted and new comparability features. Generally, IRS Forms 5500 and 5500EZ (along with applicable schedules) must be filed each year.
