An early-morning fire swept through a Center Street home on Friday, June 11th.

The Country Corner Thrift Shop, located at the Twin Churches in Holland Patent, is open once again! A program of Foothills Rural Community Ministry, we have provided, for many years, great items at very low prices, and we are open to the public! Proceeds go to our Food Pantry.

Covid-19 caused us to temporarily close in March, 2020, and again in November, 2020. On April 1, 2021, we re-opened the shop, but with safety protocols still in place. Masks must be worn by staff and customers, and safe distancing maintained as well. We are limiting the number of customers to 6 in the shop at a time. Covid numbers are down, and many have been vaccinated, but, for the safety of all, we will continue to enforce these precautions for the time being.

As always, we have a wonderful selection of gentlyused clothing, shoes and accessories, jewelry, house wares, toys, gadgets and occasional collectibles! Most clothing items are $1.00, and our bag sale (on Saturdays) consists of up to 20 clothing items (coats, sweaters and dresses not included) for $4.00! There are seasonal sales as well (such as the coat and sweater sale going on right now)!

Food Panty Hours Announced The July hours for the Foothills Rural Community Ministry Food Pantry are from 9 AM-1 PM on Saturdays, July 3, 10, and 17, and Thursday, July 22. It will also be open from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, July 7. The Food Pantry is located in the Holland Patent Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. A volunteer will greet visitors at their cars. The food will be brought out to each car. Visitors are urged to bring reusable grocery bags for their food. Call the office at 315-865-5854 for an appointment time. Appointments help keep the waiting time down, but drop-ins are still served.

The Country Corner Thrift Shop will be open on the Saturdays and Thursday, when the Food Pantry is open. It will not be open on Wednesday afternoon.

FRCM will not take Food Sense orders in July. It will resume again in August.

Food assistance is available at the Food Pantry at St. Patrick’s in Forestport by calling 315-942-4618, extension 105. Please leave a message with your unblocked phone number. Mayfaire 10, Village-Wide Garage Sale Weekend in Holland Patent Holland Patent is going to have a busy weekend in August withall starting with village-wide garage sale on August 20, 21, and 22.

And on the Village Green, August 21 & 22 the Renaissance festival Village will spring forth with the 10th year of the Mayfaire on the Green. Each year the faire opens the doors to strolling musicians, knights in armor, ladies in waiting and dozens of booths with

some of the most unusual items for sale.

The Mayfaire is free admission. Due to the COVID Pandemic Mayfaire had to be postponed until New York State said it was ok to have gatherings of people.

Agway has always partnered with the Rural Star to make the garage sale weekend an event. This year again Agway is having booths available on August 20th and

Stittville United Methodist Church Annual Strawberry Lawn Social Stittville UMC will again be hosting their annual lawn social on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021 at the Stittville Firemen’s Pavilion, Mill Street and Route 365. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and of course luscious strawberry shortcake and ice cream. Serving will begin at 5:00pm.

Beautiful music will be filling the air beginning at 6:30 with the Floyd Community Instrumental Ensemble. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy a picnic with music, fellowship and fresh air. Rain or shine. We hope to see you there!

Barneveld Free Library News Barneveld Free Library will begin “Book Discussion” on June 30th, if you would like to join us at the Library, once a Month, call the Library at 315- 896-2096, we are asking everyone to bring a lawn chair, For now our hours are Tuesday 1:00-5.00, Wednesday 10-12 and Thursday 1:006:00, we are hoping to get back to a regular schedule soon.

Happy Birthday America STOP BY & FILL YOUR PICNIC BASKET THIS SUMMER!

This is the second year in a row where the streets won’t be lined with spectators watching a Memorial Day parade in Holland Patent. This is the second year where the drums will be silent as we mark this most special holiday where we honor the memories of those who have sacrificed so much.

The only sound we may hear is a lone bugle playing taps as our veterans stand in a silent salute as a wreath will be laid at the memorials that honor fallen brothers and sisters at arms.

Yes, there will be tears as they not only remember those who given their lives in battle but also for those who came home and lived their lives after the cannon’s last shot echoed into history.

We honor more than those who have passed from this earthly plane, but do we celebrate the reason why they sacrificed their lives. They gave their all to defend their comrades, their country, their homes, their families so that we may remain free.

Many of our rights were on hold during the Covid Pandemic, and this has also been the case with past wars and times of conflagration. At such times we have to sacrifice freedom for the greater good. We pray now that all of our freedoms are returned to our nation and the world. We also pray that the memories of the fallen will never go unrecognized nor forgotten.

So as you light your campfires and pop a bottle in celebration, lift your glasses to toast those who did not come home and thank the actions that keep us free.

The Trenton Town Board has decided to open the Town Park Pavilions to rent to Town of Trenton residents only at this time.

2021-2022 Prospect Area Scholarships The Town of Trenton is accepting new applications for the HOWARD THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP, the MILDRED USHER SCHOLARSHIP, and the HART FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP. All of these scholarships are available to any student that has resided in the former 1969 Prospect Fire District for a minimum of three years, maintained a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and are planning on continuing their education by attending a Four or Two year accredited College Degree program or a Trade/Vocational School leading to Certification.

Singing Hills Seniors GOOD NEWS - Seniors have been given the go ahead to start gathering again. The first get together was on Tuesday June 15th starting at 9 AM. We will have our usual cards, games, and coffee and you are welcome to bring snacks. For the time being we will not have any in-house luncheons. Town of Trenton residents will be $4 and non-residents will be $8 each (1/2 of your annual dues. WELCOME BACK. by Steve Grabowski WATCH THE WEATHER Pretty much everything you can fish for is open now. This leaves some with many choices to make. For me, the weather tells me what to fish for. The fishing on Lake Ontario is just starting to pick up but to get out there you have to watch the winds. The waves can get pretty bad on Ontario so you need to fish there when the winds and waves are right. For me I look for a south or east wind. West or north can be fishable but need to be under 10 MPH. The

Anglers are starting to catch Steelhead and Coho’s with a few smaller Kings mixed in.

I took my friend Paul out last Sunday afternoon and we caught one beautiful Coho. It was 25 feet down over 200 feet of water. It had 19 alewives in its stomach. I always check the stomach contents of fish I clean as it can clue you in to what sizes and colors of lures to use.

Right after a thunderstorm is a great time to target small stream trout. The water levels will pick up and color the water. This

will turn the fish on to feeding and cover your movement on the bank. You can catch some nice trout after a storm in places you wouldn’t think could hold a trout.

Walleye fishing is usually good with what some anglers call a “walleye chop” that’s a good steady wind that can allow you to drift around 1 MPH. You can cover water fast and find where the fish are and then keep circling around to that spot. It also helps you troll an additional line over side doubling your offerings.

Learn what conditions are best for each species and you’ll up your odds dramatically.

Alberto is the knot I’ve used for years to join braided line to mono or braid to fluorocarbon leader. This connection could be done by using an inline swivel but with that you shorten the length of leader you can use because the swivel can’t pass through your guides like the knot can.

Sometimes I use leaders up to 30 feet. I like it because I’ve found it’s the fastest and easiest of all knots for the listed applications while on the boat or in fading light. It’s rarely failed except under one situation, while jigging with blade baits (sonars). Something about the vibration they cause through your line seems to work it loose. If I know I’m going to be using blades I’ll tie a uni-uni knot.

It serves the same purpose however it’s much harder to

tie while rocking on a boat or in dark light conditions (even with my cheaters).

Even with that said, It’s only after a full day that the Alberto starts to fail with that technique and if you retie half way through the day you’ll be fine. One tip I’ll give that isnt in the illustration is if your braid is new, work it a bit to get it to soft-

As you develop your goals, also create a budget to help you reach them.

This may involve compromise as you negotiate priorities and determine where you might need to cut back on spending to boost your savings.

2: Tackle taxes Why it’s important.

Married couples can file joint returns at both the federal and state levels.

This means marriage could have a more significant impact—for better or for worse—on your tax picture.

What to discuss. Your tax advisor can help you determine how your combined incomes will affect your tax bracket. Specifically, whether marriage might trigger a “marriage penalty”—potentially increasing your tax burden—or a “bonus” that helps reduce your taxes.

Also: Your tax advisor can help you evaluate “head of household” and “married filing separately” options.

3: Review retirement plans Why it’s important. You and your partner need to understand each other’s vision of a good retirement — and how you’ll achieve it.

What to discuss. Share information on current retirement investments.

Discuss your end financial goal and how much you’ll each need to save on a monthly or annual basis to get there.

Know that private, state, and local government employers are required to give same-sex and heterosexual married couples equal access to retirement plan benefits. Similarly, married couples are eligible for spousal Social Security benefits.

Also. Review the beneficiary and surviving-spouse rights for any retirement or pension plans. You can also work with your financial advisor and tax advisor to develop a plan that can help maximize retirement while positively impacting your tax picture.

4: Consider children Why it’s important. Put simply, children cost money. So if you have or plan to have children, you need to address the related financial needs.

What to discuss. If you or your partner already have children, discuss to what extent you’ll share financial responsibility if you marry. If you plan to have children after marriage, discuss how you'll plan for day-to-day costs, as well as future expenses, such as college tuition. Realize that you may also qualify for tax deductions as parents.*

Discuss potential “what ifs,” too. Specifically, if one parent passes away, will the surviving partner be able to maintain your family’s standard of living?

You may want to investigate life insurance options to prepare for this possibility.** Also. Couples need to pay attention to legal aspects of parenting. That is, who qualifies as the birth parent or legal parent? A family attorney can help you work through these issues.

5: Investigate health insurance Why it’s important. If you decide not to get married, determine if your employers offer benefits to domestic partners, couples in civil unions, or other unmarried couples.

What to discuss.

Compare insurance coverage options from each partner’s employer to determine the best combination of coverage and cost for your needs.

6: Establish an estate plan Why it’s important. An estate plan helps ensure that your assets are managed as you wish, now and later.

What to discuss. A legal spouse often has specific inheritance rights under state law you may want to review with your estate planning attorney. It’s also wise to work with the attorney to complete at least the following four documents: • A durable power of attorney, which states who will be responsible for managing your finances and making financial decisions should you become incapable of doing so — for instance, due to injury or incapacity.

• A will, which ensures your individual assets that do not have designated beneficiaries are distributed according to your wishes after you’re gone.

• A healthcare power of attorney, which authorizes someone to make medical decisions for you when you are unable to do so yourself.

• A living will, which expresses your intentions regarding the use of lifesustaining measures in the event of terminal illness.

You and your partner should review your estate plan every few years or when you experience significant life events, such as marriage or children; your estate value changes; relocation to a new state, or as your financial goals change.

Also. Married couples qualify for the unlimited marital deduction, which allows a surviving spouse to avoid potential estate taxes upon his or her spouse’s death.* 7: Discuss a prenuptial agreement Why it’s important. This can be a difficult topic to address, since it implies the relationship may not last.

Sidebar Beneficiary designations still matter Even if you and your partner decide to marry, it’s still important for you both to specifically designate primary and contingent beneficiaries for life insurance policies and retirement assets such as 401(k) plans, IRAs, and annuities.

Designating beneficiaries for investment accounts may also be a consideration depending on the size and complexity of your estate and the estate planning documents executed.

Beneficiary designations will take precedence over any other instructions you’ve left (such as in a will). So it’s also critical that you review your designations every few years to see if any updates are necessary. Stephen Bruce Packard Stephen Bruce Packard, 68, of the Town of Western, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Rome Health, after complications with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born in Chelsea, MA, on August 7, 1952, a son of the late Edgar and Ruth (MacKenzie) Packard. He was a graduate of Danvers (MA) High School and the Utica School of Commerce. On May 15, 1982, he was united in marriage to Tammy E. Richie.

Stephen enlisted in the United States Air Force on January 17, 1975, and served his country for 20 years retiring as Staff Sergeant. He later held various jobs in the community.

He was a lifelong “Super Fan” of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing, muscle cars, collecting movies and listening to classic rock.

Surviving besides his loving wife of 38 years, Tammy, are three sons, Christopher S. Packard, Nicholas A. Fields (Lydia) and Stephen B. Packard II (CaSandra); a sister, Mary Packard; two brothers, Richard Packard and Edgar “Eddie” Packard (Linda); five special grandchildren, Jaycee, Nicholas, Elasandra, Elisia and Enzo; three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Stephen’s family would like to express their gratitude to his daughters-in-law and his in-laws and their families for always being there to help with his care during his illness, the staff at

Alvin E. Ketchum Alvin E. Ketchum, 82, of Floyd, passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Rome Health. He was born in Elmira, NY, on September 5, 1938, a son of the late James and Elinor (Beebe) Ketchum. He was a graduate of Holland Patent High School and on July 8, 1961, he was united in marriage to Glenice Van Dresar.

Al worked for the Oneida County DPW for 38 years. He was a member of the Floyd and Newport Seniors and enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Surviving besides his loving wife, Glenice, is a daughter, Andrea Hanan (John); a son, Rob Ketchum (Joycelyn Vardo); a sister, Abigail Bielby; four grandchildren, Jessie Fleury, Alex Mezza, Gabby Mezza and Timothy Ketchum; and a nephew, James Bielby. He was predeceased by a brother, Louis Ketchum.

Barneveld - Barbara A. Pope, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 13, 2021.

She was born January 8, 1938, in Saratoga Springs, NY, to Dorothy and Floyd Atwell. She spent the first years of her life in the Burnt Hills area.

Her parents moved to Steuben where Barbara spent the rest of her childhood and young adult life on a farm. She fondly remembers raising pheasants, chickens, her horse and even being a judge for FFA. Barbara graduated from Remsen Central School and continued her education at Buffalo State College and Utica College where she graduated and entered her teaching career.

In 1966, Barbara married Henry D. Pope and moved to Eagle Bay, where she spent many happy and fulfilling years. She spent many years teaching first, second and third grades in one classroom at Raquette Lake. Barbara later moved to Barneveld and continued her teaching and educational pursuits, including earning her Masters Degree in Special Education.

Barbara will be remembered for her strength and resilience even during periods of change in her life. She loved spending time with her family and talking on the phone with her friends in her later years. She also enjoyed watching Rachael Ray and The Great British Baking Show. She as always was up for a good joke. She was a member of Lake DeltaMappa-Salma Chapter of The Order of the Eastern Star, and the Holland Patent Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Barbara leaves behind her children and their spouses: Leslie J. Surprenant and Tammi Siewers, Catherine and Daniel Riggall, and Anne and Jack Stacy. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Marcus Riggall, Olivia Surprenant and Jack, Trinity and Tessa Stacy. She was predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Floyd, her brother, Merlin Atwell, and her grandsons, Christopher Jones and Jonathan Riggall.

Mildred Elizabeth Murphy Overman Mildred Elizabeth Murphy Overman, of Middleville, passed away Friday, June 11, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Wednesday, December 6, 1922 at her grandparents’ home in Herkimer, NY. She was one of seven children born to the late Jeremiah “Jay” and Florence Fitch Murphy. Mildred grew up at the family homestead near Fairfield, where, in the early years, had a diesel generator and large batteries to run the milk cooler for their dairy farm and for a few lights in the house. Until the mid-40s commercial electricity was not available in the area where they lived.

Winter travel was mostly by sleigh since roads were not cleared of snow until early April. In fair weather children walked a few miles to a one-room schoolhouse where a single teacher taught students of all ages and where Mildred had completed all the studies they offered by the age of ten. She had some catching up to do, so, for the next four years she lived with her grandparents during the school year and attended St. Francis de Sales High School in Herkimer. There, she took high school classes and subjects that had not been available to her at country school. After four years she still lacked a few credits to graduate so she enrolled for a year at the newly centralized West Canada Valley Central School. Along with her brother Bud, she was part of WCV's first graduating class in 1939, the youngest in the class at the age of 16. Mildred loved her year at West Canada where she became a cheerleader, a member of the journalism club, and stayed in a hotel for the first time ever on the senior trip to New York City. She made many, many friends. Her friendship with Mildred Frank (Wood) lasted a lifetime but other good friends she often mentioned were Eileen Kelly, Betty Ann Ford, and Myra Olds.

After graduation Mildred lived with her Aunt Mary Murphy in Herkimer, taking the bus every morning to Little Falls to work at a shoe factory. She was saving money so she could study to be a dental hygienist at Eastman Dental Dispensary in Rochester, NY from which she graduated on June 2, 1942. She then moved to New York City where she lived with her Aunt Irene Fitch, taking flying lessons, working as a dental assistant and finally becoming a dental hygienist for the Army at Fort Dix in New Jersey. At Fort Dix she met Lt. E. Gerard Overman (Jerry) and they married on February 8, 1947. Their first two children, Rod and Kathy, were born in the late 1940s. In the mid-fifties they became parents to three sons: David, Jay and Tom. Sadly, twin girls, Maria and Susan, did not survive. Their youngest child, Beth, was born in the early 1960s.

In the years just after WW-II there was a huge demand for housing. They could not afford a single-family home, so they bought a small apartment house in New York City. It did not take Jerry and Mildred long to realize they were not meant to be landlords. After Jerry returned home from the Korean War, they moved to a small house on Broad Channel, an island in Jamaica Bay NY. At the time Jerry was working for Canteen Corporation, and they were transferred to Charlotte, NC in late 1955. After a few years Jerry started his own photography business there. When Beth was two Mildred started work at the Post Office where she stayed for 25 years, able to adapt her schedule to her family’s needs.

When Mildred’s sister, Edna, passed away in 1984 Mildred bought her Middleville home. There Mildred spent parts of many summers with family and friends. After her retirement in 1994 Mildred and Jerry enjoyed travel, especially to the Pacific Northwest and Puerto Rico as well as New York State where they had many relatives. Mildred’s favorite escape when the ‘world was too much for her’ was to her tiny cabin on The New River in the North Carolina mountains. There she was able to assert her claim to the shoreline by her cabin that had over the years been home to many beavers. Mildred’s persistence, DEQ approved traps, and tons of rip-rap finally did the trick and the beavers gave up and moved on.

Mildred never lost her curiosity about things around her and never gave up wanting to learn about something new or different. She was a tour guide’s delight, someone who heard his every word and wanted to understand. We often called her the ‘energizer bunny’. She wanted to get things done and was always on the move.

In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jerry, two sisters, four brothers, twin daughters Maria and Susan, grandson David, and son Jay. She is survived by daughters: Kathy and Beth; sons: Rod and his wife, Hilde, David and his wife, Judy, and Tom and his wife, Mary Ellen; daughter-in-law: Marie, with whom she has lived with for the past several years; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two cousins, two sisters-in-law, countless nieces and nephews, and many more loving family and friends.

David A. Jones David A. Jones, 66, of Holland Patent and formerly of Sauquoit, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of his family, on Thursday, June 10, 2021.

He was born on November 21, 1954, in Utica, a son of the late Howard and Caroline (Scruton) Jones. He was a graduate of New Hartford High School. David served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1974 to 1978.

He was once married to the former Jennifer Lallier. David was a loving and caring father and grandfather, who cherished the time that he spent with his family, especially his adored sons and grandchildren. He enjoyed watching hockey, camping and volunteering in his community. He was very communityminded and was an avid volunteer and supporter of Compeer, the Ride for Missing Children and Relay for Life. His many acts of kindness and generosity will never be forgotten.

He is survived by his sons, Josh (Daphne) Jones, of Poland and Peter Jones, of Holland Patent. He leaves his adored grandchildren, Owen, Stella and Evelyn. He also leaves two brothers, Robert (Eleanor) Jones, of New Hartford and James Jones, of Boston; also his nieces, Robin, Leslie and Melissa.

The family wishes to sincerely thank his many friends and family members for all of their love and support given to David over the years.

Family and friends gathered at the Smith Funeral Home, Sauquoit. Interment with Military Honors took place at Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica.

John J. Patti John J. Patti, 80, of Newport, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 at his home.

He was born in Brooklyn, on June 13, 1940, to Frank and Ruth (Hillier) Patti. John was always very proud of his Brooklyn roots. He went to City College of New York on a scholarship for engineering and later received his Master's in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University. He was hired as a civilian engineer (researcher) by the US Air Force in 1963, working for the Rome Air Development Center, Rome Laboratory and the Air Force Research Laboratory for 42 years, until his retirement in 2006.

John was a passionate man and had lot of loves – he loved dogs and especially huskies. He loved hockey, especially watching his boys Andy and Nick play and was famous for making well engineered ice rinks in the backyard. This combination of ingenuity and commitment to his kids was a bedrock quality – he was a very dedicated and supportive Dad. He loved telling stories about all the trips to watch his daughter, Maryanne, competitively figure skate in Lake Placid and his daughter, Christine, compete in gymnastics meets. John was a hobby inventor (the wheels were always turning), an early adopter of the Linux operating system and loved designing and perfecting his own 3D camera. John was also a big Yankee fan and loved talking about camping trips to Brennan Beach in Pulaski with his family. He had special memories of Jacob Riis Park, Brooklyn, talked about long bike rides there when he was a kid and cherished a return trip he took there in 2018 with his wife, Joyce and stepson, Matt. John was united in marriage to Joyce (Johnson) Kochan, on July 25, 1992 and pretty much spent the next 28 years trying to keep up with her and her crazy pace – be it to their camp at Piseco, quick trips to Maine, or running around to see their grandkids.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. John's Church, Newport, with Rev. Terence Healy and Deacon Jim Bower officiating. Interment followed in St. John's Cemetery, Newport.

Elwin (Al) Grosjean, Elwin (Al) Grosjean, 87, of Remsen, peacefully went to be with the Lord on June 6, 2021 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by family.

He was born in Rome N.Y. on January 14, 1934 a son of Clayton and Grace Miller Grosjean. He grew up in Ava and developed a passion for the outdoors as a hunter, fisherman and woodsman alongside his father.

He graduated from West Leyden High School. He was first married to Arlene Converse (predeceased) and they were parents to Jeffrey (predeceased) and Kelly. He later married Yvonne Kuehner on June 6, 1980. They enjoyed 41 years of marriage and enjoyed various local car rides exploring, along with the trips they took to Maine. Elwin was a volunteer fireman for many years.

He worked with a relative driving log truck until he began his career at Griffiss Air Force Base as a sheet metal worker and plastics fabricator, where he was responsible for repairing various military aircraft under a variety of adverse conditions. He retired after 35 years of service. He then established Al’s Small Engine Repair at his home garage in Remsen. He provided this service to the community for over 20 years. His passion for hard work continued until he was 84 years old. He had a fond passion for the family hunting camp in the Adirondacks.

He also enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling and scuba diving in his younger years. Nothing surpassed his love for dogs, especially Golden Retrievers. Al never hesitated to express how proud he was of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He couldn’t have been prouder of his family who loved him dearly. His heart was big enough for all of them and he would do anything for anyone. He was a great story teller and he will be sadly missed.

Surviving is his loving wife, Yvonne; three children, Kelly (Dane) Cagwin, Robert (Alberta) Butkiewicz and Sheryl Shepard; 5 grandchildren, Kimberly (Chris) Joynt, Christin (Jim) Gilot, Robert Butkiewicz II, Lindsay (Jason) Gori and Aaron (Sarah) Cagwin; 8.5 great grandchildren, Reese, Tessa, Lindley, Esme, Avery, Colten, Cameron, Reid and the baby on the way that warmed his heart. He’s also survived by dear cousins, Suzanne (Walt) Belevick, Edward (Carolyn) Meadows and dear friends, Amelia Victor, Mitch Thomas, Mark Fidler and Bill Bates. He was predeceased by his parents.

A graveside service was held at Evergreen Cemetery, Stokes. There were no public calling hours.

Ira L. Davis Ira L. Davis, 90, of Holland Patent, passed away, Saturday, June 12, 2021, at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, with his daughter, Cynde, by his side.

He was born, September 28, 1930, in Hornell, the son of the late Ira L. and Eloise Caple Davis. He was a graduate of Alfred Almond and received his BA Degree from Syracuse University at Utica College. Mr. Davis served as a Staff Sergeant with the US Air Force during the Korean War. On June 5, 1954, at the Barneveld United Methodist Church, he married Sylvia L. Beachley, a loving union of 63 years. She passed away December 27, 2017. For many years, Mr. Davis was an Engineer in the Aerospace Division at General Electric.

He was a member of the Holland Patent American Legion Post #161, B.P.O.E Utica Lodge #33, the Trenton Fish & Game Club and the Quarter Century Club at General Electric.

Ira enjoyed camping, spending time with his friends at the Kayuta Lake Campground, was an avid model airplane enthusiast and designed and built whirligigs, his favorites being Tweety and Sylvester.

He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia "Cynde" Synakowski and her companion, John Nicolosi, of Holland Patent and Trish Hartman, of Lebanon, TN; a sister, Geraldine Goss, of Geneva; a brother-in-law, Ronald Beachley, of East Liverpool, OH; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Lola Fursman; three brothers-in-law, Francis Goss, Sidney Fursman and Francis "Bub" Beachley; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Mallory and Jean Beachley; and a grandson, Sean Hartman.

Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Evergreen Cemetery, Barneveld.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the IMCU at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare and the NYS Veterans Home, Oxford, for their many acts of kindness and dedication.

In memory of Ira, kindly consider Operation Sunshine or the Stevens Swan Humane Society.

Barbara P. Curran

Barbara P. Curran, 86, of Newport, passed away on June 14, 2021.

Barbara was born in Fredericksburg, VA in 1934 to Alto and Eleanor Purks Persons. She graduated from Alexandria Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and was employed at hospitals in VA, NJ, FL, and NY. She also worked at the Newport Library, Kmart, J. C. Penney, and for the Palm Beach Post. Barbara was a volunteer at Kateri in Little Falls and worked at both Norway and Newport History Centers.

Barbara was a proud mother and loving grandmother who cherished time spent with her twin grandchildren, Sarah and Casey. She looked forward to Christmas gatherings with her extended Barnard family. She also enjoyed volunteering and visiting with her many friends at Kateri and the history centers, as well as to her many outings with friend, Nancy Clarke.

Surviving are children, Kathy (Mike) McEvoy, Fran (Mark) Barnard and Frank (Tracy) Curran; grandchildren, Sarah McEvoy, Casey (Chloe) McEvoy and Alicia (Joe) Adalian; great-granddaughters, Diana McEvoy and Hannah Adalian; daughter, Deborah Decaro and her family in New Jersey; brother-in-law, Robert Hays and his family; and a special niece, Donna Kernan. She was predeceased by her sister, Eleanor Lee Hays.

In accordance with Barbara’s wishes a private service for her family will take place at Newport Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport.

Pigweeds & Soybean Cyst Nematode: Identification and Management Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) is holding workshops to educate farmers about two new serious pests that are now in our region – tall waterhemp and the soybean cyst nematode. On July 27th at 1 pm in Ballston Spa (info and registration at https://tinyurl.com/6h4uuyv9) and at 6 pm in Copake (info and registration at https://tinyurl.com/cwcvtcyk). Two NYSDEC pesticide applicator credits can be earned for categories 1A, 21, 22, 23. Dr. Lynn Sosnoski (Cornell University) will bring potted plants so farmers can learn how to identify tall waterhemp as well as it other pigweed relatives. They will also learn its biology and management. There will be a discussion of other difficult-to-control weeds. Dr. Jaime Cummings (Syngenta) will discuss the biology and management of the soybean cyst nematode, the most costly soybean pest in the United States. These pests have been found in the Hudson Valley and several central New York counties in recent years. They are very difficult to control, so CCE and Cornell University are making a big effort to reach farmers this year with the necessary education.

There is no charge to attend the workshops, but pre-registration is required. All applicable COVID-19 precautions will be followed. Hubber & Vellone Named Central Adirondack Kiwanis & TOWPBA Students of the Year 20-21 The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks and The Town of Webb Police Benevolent Association has recognized Ms. Amanda Huber of Inlet, Student of the Month for March 2021, and Ms. Elsa Vellone of Old Forge, Student of the Month for April 2021 as Students of the Year for 2020-21.

Amanda Huber is the Kiwanis Student of the Year and Elsa Vellone is the Town of Webb Police Benevolent Association (PBA) Student of the Year.

Amanda is the daughter of Phil and Sue Huber of Inlet, NY and Elsa is the daughter of Daniel Vellone & Elizabeth Lorentzsen of Old Forge. NY. Amanda and Elsa are Senior students at Town of Webb Union Free School in Old Forge.

Amanda plans on attending Siena College and major in accounting. She is a member of Key Club, Honor Society and Varsity Club.

Amanda was Student Council President throughout High School and played soccer, volleyball, and track.

Elsa plans to attend college in the fall to pursue a degree in International Relations.

She is Vice President of Key Club as well as Vice President of Travel Club, and a student representative of Student Council. Elsa played Volleyball, Track and has been studying dance for over a decade.

Both will be able to wear the blue Key Club cords at graduation.
