Welcome to the #NotYourAverageSummerSchool at RUI University! As we step into the vibrant season of summer, we are excited to offer a range of interactive classes and engaging monthly events that will make this summer one to remember This summer, RUI University is focused on blending fun, learning, and community connection. This summer, we’re offering:

Interactive Summer Classes: Dive into unique, hands-on courses that blend education with creativity. From culinary classes to outdoor fitness challenges, these interactive sessions are designed to ignite your passion for learning while fostering a sense of community

Monthly Events to Look Forward To:

June - Juneteenth Outing: Join us as we celebrate Juneteenth with a special outing to a local Black-owned restaurant. This is an opportunity to experience the culture, history, and delicious flavors that shape our shared heritage

July - History of Ice Cream: Cool off this summer with a deliciously sweet history lesson on the origins of ice cream. Taste different varieties, learn about its cultural significance, and explore the evolution of everyone’s favorite summer treat!

August - Bistro Trivia Tournament: Get your trivia hats on and join us for the Bistro Trivia Tournament! Test your knowledge, enjoy great food, and compete for exciting prizes in this lively and fun-filled eve

HISTORY

Sons of the American Revolution Traveling Trunk

June 10, July 15, August 12 at 2:00 PM

Explore the people, artifacts, and lesser-known stories that shaped the American Revolution through this engaging three-part series.

Class 1: Patriot’s Chest

Step into the life of a Revolutionary War soldier through a hands-on display and discussion of essential items used in daily military life Topics include eating and drinking tools, navigation, currency, fire starting, clothing from various military roles, and demonstrations of flintlock and bladed weapons.

Class 2: The Beeline March

Learn about the historic July 1775 march of two Virginia rifle companies from Winchester and Shepherdstown to Boston This rapid journey to join General Washington’s forces during the Siege of Boston is considered a founding moment of the U.S. Army.

Class 3: Spanish Contributions to the Revolutionary War

Discover Spain’s critical yet often overlooked role in the American Revolution. Presented by a historian in full Colonial Spanish military uniform, this session explores Spain’s military support, supplies, and financial contributions to the cause.

Artist Spotlight: Leonardo Da Vinci

Artist Spotlight: Edouard Degas

Let's look at Degas work-his personal life, his fascination with singers, ballet dancers and equestrian activity This lecture examines the extent of Japanese influence in his work, and the role he played in the impressionist movement.

Brisitsh Art: The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood

Inspired by all things medieval, three young English artist (aged 19-21) formed a group to enhance art as it was - before the Italian Renaissance The resulting art romanticized stories that took from Arthurian legend, Shakespearean drama, epic poetry, and common folklore Feast your eyes on images of colorful paintings, tapestries, and stained glass, by painters such as Dante Rossetti, William Holman Hunt, and John Millais, among others.

Roshna Kapadia has a BA from Tufts University, an MA in South Asian Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MA in Art History from George Mason University She has lived in the Washington DC area for 25 years

Dancing Around the World

June 4, July 9, and August 6 at 2:00 PM

Join us as we travel across cultures through the art of dance! This three-part series explores the rich histories and vibrant styles of ballroom and social dance traditions from around the world

Class 1: Smooth Dances

Discover the elegance of smooth ballroom dances like the Waltz and Foxtrot. We'll learn about their origins, how they have evolved over time, and explore the graceful techniques that make these dances timeless.

Class 2: Latin Dances

Get ready to move to the rhythm of Latin America as we explore popular social dances such as Salsa, Bachata, and Merengue. We'll dive into their cultural roots, learn partner techniques, and see how these dances connect through shared musical and movement elements.

Class 3: American Dances (Swing)

Step into the energetic world of American swing dance This class covers the history and styles of swing, featuring lessons and demonstrations of two iconic forms: Lindy Hop and West Coast Swing.

Jeff Bragg: Jeff’s passion for performance began early and led him to a scholarship at the University of Oklahoma’s Helmrich School of Arts. With a strong focus on technique, he combines his background in physiology and personal training to teach dance with a deep understanding of body mechanics Over 17 years, he has mastered more than 20 styles, including American Smooth, Rhythm, Latin, and Country. Jeff is also an avid West Coast Swing dancer and active competitor.

Rebecca Menon: Rebecca’s movement journey began with gymnastics, acrobatics, and cheer before entering the ballroom world in 2010. She specializes in American Smooth, Rhythm, and club-style dances, with a focus on West Coast Swing With a background in bodywork and psychology, she brings a thoughtful, studentcentered approach to teaching and is deeply involved in community building and competition.

Heather Connole, a self-taught Impressionist oil painter with 17 years of experience, creates colorful and joyful works Her bold brush strokes bring movement to picturesque landscapes, portraits, animals, and flowers Represented in various galleries, Heather also shares her passion by teaching art classes and inspiring confidence in her student

Attendees will also gain practical tips on how to report suspicious activity and safeguard personal and financial information Whether you're a senior, a caregiver, or a healthcare professional, this session provides essential knowledge to help prevent fraud and promote a more secure healthcare environment

Shawn Smith is the State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol program. He leads a team of over 100 paid and volunteer staff that educate seniors on fraud prevention. Shawn is also the author of “101 Fraud Tips”, a guide to help seniors protect their money and identify from scammers His presentation will be about "Avoiding Common Healthcare Scams” In it, he will cover the most common types of scams affecting seniors and he will share ways to prevent, detect, and report those scams. In addition to being an author and speaker, Shawn is a life coach, ordained minister, and the father of two young men, Shawn & Vaughn Shawn resides in Richmond, VA

Echoes Of Nature (EON) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to environmental education to help people of all ages better understand, appreciate, and care for wildlife and the natural environment Through multisensory teaching techniques, EON aims to connect communities to nature and to give individuals of all ages the information and skills needed to become better stewards of natural resources.

The Life & Legacy of Dorothy Danridge

This lecture delves into the short, dynamic, and ultimately tragic life of Dorothy Dandridge, a superstar ahead of her time. As a dancer, singer, and nightclub headliner who became a movie superstar, Dandridge broke significant barriers in Hollywood She was the first African American woman nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award in 1954 The presentation traces her journey from the early influence of her show-business mother to her rise in Hollywood and the personal and professional struggles she faced along the way. By examining Dandridge's significant contributions and the cultural challenges she navigated, the lecture highlights her enduring legacy as a trailblazer in the entertainment industry.

Sterling Harris has had a career as an actor, television producer, trainer, public speaker, mediator and developmental coach. He is an entertainment and history buff and loves creating and delivering presentations on famous figures, events and celebrated eras in history An avid music fan as well, Sterling plays bass guitar in his jazz combo which performs at venues in the D.C. area.
