WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?
RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

January – Civic Engagement
Explore the importance of informed citizenship through discussions and activities focused on civic processes, volunteerism, and community involvement. January encourages residents to stay engaged and empowered
February – Global Culture & Contemporary Issues
Expand your global perspective through programs highlighting diverse cultures, current events, and worldwide trends. February’s offerings spark meaningful dialogue and deepen global understanding.

This engaging and interactive session celebrates the bonds we build, encourages meaningful conversation, and helps everyone feel connected to the people and places that make our Bay Lake community unique.

Olivia Fisher, our Inspiritas Director at Bay Lake, has always had a passion for connecting with people She holds a Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Tennessee and is dedicated to creating engaging activities that include all of our wonderful residents. With her energy, warmth, and enthusiasm, Olivia is truly a light that shines throughout Bay Lake!
Global Cultures & Contemporary Issues: Tastes of Tradition: Native American Bread Making

Residents will have a hands on opportunity to step into history by making traditional Native American bread This hands-on class will explore the ingredients, techniques, and cultural significance of the breads that were a staple in daily life for Eastern Woodland communities.

Exploring The Arts w/ Emily
Art of the Four Seasons

Art of the Four Seasons: Art depicts the four seasons through a combination of seasonal symbolism, natural elements, and activities associated with each time of year. Artists use color palettes and specific imagery to evoke the mood of each season, from the bright yellows of summer to the cool blues and whites of winter. We will create a painting combining the four seasons.
The Art of Georgia O'Keefe

The Art of Georgia O'Keefe: We will explore the works of one of the most famous female artists. Her interesting life and art career will also be discussed. Her large images of flowers will be a focus in our slideshow and serve as inspiration for our paintings Each resident will have a choice of various flowers to paint
Art of the Four Seasons

The History of African American Art in America: In honor of black history month, we will explore some of the visual art of African Americans throughout history. We will use these artists and their work as inspiration for our painting

Emily Basto is a registered art therapist with a Master's in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a background in Sociology and Anthropology. Inspired by global cultures, she integrates these influences into her projects. Emily specializes in working with older adults, promoting the therapeutic benefits of art to enhance well-being

Holidays Cards with Sandy

Join us for a heartfelt and festive activity as Sandy Kinchen shares her beautiful handmade holiday cards with the community. Sandy’s creativity and warm spirit shine through each design, bringing joy, color, and a personal touch to the season
Residents will have the opportunity to admire her lovely work, choose a card, and send a little holiday cheer to someone special. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to celebrate kindness, connection, and the spirit of giving.

We are delighted to recognize Sandy Kinchen, whose creativity and kindness add something truly special to our community. Sandy is well known for her talent in crafting beautifully designed handmade cards, each one created with care, imagination, and a warm personal touch. Her holiday cards, in particular, bring joy and connection to everyone who receives them Sandy’s thoughtful spirit shines through her work, and her willingness to share her artistry helps brighten the season for residents and staff alike.

Eric Ingersoll's Musical Showcase , he plays the piano, learned to play entirely by ear, captivating audiences with his extraordinary talent and unique interpretations. His performances are not just concerts; they are immersive experiences that transport listeners to different emotional landscapes As Eric's fingers glide effortlessly across the keys, each note resonates with passion and precision, telling stories that words alone cannot capture. His ability to evoke deep emotions through his music is a testament to his profound connection with the art form. Audiences leave his showcases feeling inspired and rejuvenated, having witnessed the magic that unfolds when natural talent meets dedication and creativity

Eric Ingersoll is a gifted piano player who learned to play entirely by ear a rare and remarkable talent. His natural musical ability shines through every note he plays, bringing warmth, joy, and nostalgia to all who listen.
Eric loves sharing his music with our Bay Lake family, and his performances always fill the room with smiles, toe-tapping, and happy memories.
