WHAT IS RUI UNIVERSITY?
RUI University is a multifaceted curriculum that promotes purposeful living. The program supports intellectual wellness by allowing residents to critically think and examine topics from a variety of disciplines. Residents engage with peers and visitors in discourse and work through questions collaboratively.

101 Fraud Tips: Protecting Seniors from Scams

Discover practical and proven strategies to safeguard your finances and personal information in this engaging session led by Shawn Smith, State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol and author of the widely praised guide 101 Fraud Tips. Drawing from the book’s clear, actionable advice and real-world examples, Shawn will explain the most common scams targeting older adults today and how to prevent, detect, and report fraudulent activity. Known for its accessibility and effectiveness, 101 Fraud Tips has been recognized within senior-service and fraudprevention circles as an essential resource for empowering adults to stay informed and secure This presentation provides participants with confidence, clarity, and tools they can use immediately.



Shawn Smith is the State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol program. He leads a team of over 100 paid and volunteer staff that educate seniors on fraud prevention. Shawn is also the author of “101 Fraud Tips”, a guide to help seniors protect their money and identify from scammers. His presentation will be about "Avoiding Common Healthcare Scams” In it, he will cover the most common types of scams affecting seniors and he will share ways to prevent, detect, and report those scams.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
VPAP's Civics Navigator Civic Health Series

RUI University is proud to launch the winter semester with the Civics Navigator –Civic Health Series, presented in partnership with the Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) This series is designed to strengthen civic understanding and empower participants to engage meaningfully in the governmental processes that shape their communities
The January class, Civic Engagement, introduces learners to the foundational concepts of civic participation, public service, and community involvement Participants will explore how informed engagement whether through voting, volunteerism, advocacy, or awareness contributes to healthy, vibrant communities This session provides a clear, accessible roadmap for understanding how local and state systems work, equipping residents with the knowledge to stay involved and make meaningful contributions.


Erin Hill joined VPAP in 2024 as Civics Education Program Director With a Master's in Education and BA in Political Science, she taught high school humanities for nearly a decade While at CodeRVA Regional High School, she earned both the 2021 VASCD Impact Award and was the 2020 National History Day Teacher of the Year Nominee for Virginia. Prior to VPAP, she honed her skills in the private sector as an agile project manager. Now, Erin helps Virginians understand the political process and engage with issues that matter at state and local levels

Exploring The Arts w/ Emily
Art of the Four Seasons

Art of the Four Seasons: Art depicts the four seasons through a combination of seasonal symbolism, natural elements, and activities associated with each time of year. Artists use color palettes and specific imagery to evoke the mood of each season, from the bright yellows of summer to the cool blues and whites of winter. We will create a painting combining the four seasons.
The Art of Georgia O'Keefe

The Art of Georgia O'Keefe: We will explore the works of one of the most famous female artists. Her interesting life and art career will also be discussed. Her large images of flowers will be a focus in our slideshow and serve as inspiration for our paintings Each resident will have a choice of various flowers to paint
Art of the Four Seasons

The History of African American Art in America: In honor of black history month, we will explore some of the visual art of African Americans throughout history. We will use these artists and their work as inspiration for our painting

Emily Basto is a registered art therapist with a Master's in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a background in Sociology and Anthropology. Inspired by global cultures, she integrates these influences into her projects. Emily specializes in working with older adults, promoting the therapeutic benefits of art to enhance well-being.

Catherine McNulty assists both men and women who are feeling trapped in their grief following a devastating loss She guides them from a state of feeling lost, lonely, and disconnected to discovering peace and emotional control, enabling them to embrace a life filled with renewed joy, connection, and purpose.
With over nine years of coaching experience, she has developed The New Paradigm of Grief Healing does not equate to forgetting; rather, it involves learning to carry your grief with resilience, honoring your loss while reconstructing a meaningful life.

Paint a Glass Workshop

Residents will take part in a creative and interactive Paint-a-Glass Workshop, led by one of our own talented community members. During this hands-on class, everyone will have the opportunity to paint and personalize their own glass— turning a simple item into a beautiful piece of art Each participant will choose their own colors and designs, creating a one-of-a-kind glass that can be displayed as décor for any season or used as a special wine glass. Whether residents prefer something festive, elegant, or playful, this workshop will encourage imagination, creativity, and fun.

Residents will soon have the opportunity to take part in a special Button Art Class taught by one of our very own talented community members. During this creative workshop, participants will explore the fun and charming world of button art— using colorful buttons, patterns, and simple design techniques to create their own unique masterpieces Our resident instructor will guide everyone step-by-step, offering tips, inspiration, and encouragement as residents turn everyday materials into beautiful works of art. Whether creating a picture, a decorative shape, or a personalized design, each participant will leave with a finished piece that reflects their creativity

Lori Jackson is a talented artist and resident known for her love of art and sharing it with others. She explores various crafts, including painting and handmade décor, and inspires her fellow residents with her enthusiasm Lori enjoys teaching new techniques and creating alongside others, making her a cherished member of the community whose kindness and creativity brighten every space.

Fit and Feisty Support Group
December 9 and December 30, 2025, January 13, 2026 and January 20, 2026, and February 10, 2026
A resident-led space designed to encourage wellness, positivity, and connection. This uplifting group will offer participants the chance to share experiences, discuss personal goals, and support one another on their journeys toward healthier, more confident living
Led by our inspiring residents, the Fit and Feisty Support Group will focus on staying active, embracing aging with strength and humor, and celebrating the small victories along the way Through open conversation, helpful tips, and motivational discussions, residents will encourage each other to stay engaged, empowered, and spirited
This group will provide a warm and welcoming environment where friendships can grow, laughter can be shared, and everyone can feel supported in becoming their best, most vibrant selves

Join Robert Kelly, Museums Coordinator for Gloucester County, VA, for a threepart series exploring Virginia's rich history. His lectures will connect local Gloucester and Hampton Roads stories with national events, emphasizing social aspects of conflict and key figures. The curriculum aims to enhance cognitive function and social connections through local narratives and artifacts that highlight significant historical moments

Robert Kelly is the Museums Coordinator for Gloucester County, VA, managing the Gloucester Museum of History. An Old Dominion University graduate with a focus on Civil War, Virginia & Maritime History, he served as the Museum Historian at Fort Monroe Robert is also Vice President of the American Friends of Lafayette, promoting education and programming.

George Washington - Commander in Chief

Residents will enjoy an engaging and informative presentation on George Washington as Commander in Chief. We will explore Washington’s extraordinary leadership during the American Revolution, focusing on the qualities, challenges, and decisions that helped shape the nation’s earliest military efforts
During the program, we will look at Washington’s background, his strategic role in leading the Continental Army, and the pivotal moments that defined his command —such as the daring crossing of the Delaware, the harsh winter at Valley Forge, and the final victory at Yorktown Participants will gain insight into Washington’s leadership style, his perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds, and his lasting legacy as a respected and unifying figure
This presentation will offer residents the chance to reflect, ask questions, and enjoy a meaningful look at one of America’s most important historical leaders. It will be a wonderful opportunity to connect with history and appreciate the enduring impact of George Washington’s service as the nation’s first Commander in Chief

Life Enrichment Director Colin Kindred invites residents to step back in time to the American Revolution in a class highlighting one of his favorite Founding Fathers, George Washington Focusing on Washington’s role as Commander in Chief, Colin will share his passion for history while exploring the leadership, courage, and determination that guided the Continental Army to victory. With this presentation, he hopes to inspire and inform residents about the remarkable events and individuals who helped shape this great nation
