Crafting Connections
A Mediateque for Northern Liberties
Throughout the semester, our studio project focused on designing a Mediateque for the Northern Liberties community in Philadelphia. As a class, we navigated each stage of the design process, with a strong emphasis on understanding the site to ensure the building was positioned thoughtfully within its context. I prioritized creating a cohesive floor plan layout that harmonized with the surrounding neighborhood and contributed positively to the community.
As the semester progressed, we shifted our focus to developing a specific area of the building. I chose the front structure, which features public meeting and exhibition spaces. This phase allowed me to delve into intricate details, including the roof terrace and wall construction, providing valuable insights into the practical aspects of implementing our design.

Fostering Community and Growth
This studio explored the relationship between individual buildings and urban design, emphasizing community-driven architecture. We analyzed social and environmental factors to create urban spaces that align with local culture, designing a facility and housing component for a nonprofit in Germantown. A key focus was understanding how “program” and “programming” shape architecture. The project aimed to foster personal growth by designing shared spaces that support single parents and young adults, promoting learning and security while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding community.

Library in Curno
Bergamo, Italy |
By Archea Associati
The project entails a 2,000-square-meter library and auditorium in Curno, Bergamo province, within a larger community and educational complex. Designed as a monolithic structure of iron oxide-pigmented concrete, its façade features an alphabetic bas-relief, visually linking the middle school to the plaza while separating the library and auditorium with a central corridor enclosed by a double concrete wall. As part of a multimedia case study, my collaborator, Antara, and I analyzed the building’s primary and secondary structures, as well as its envelope design, exploring how its materiality and structural systems respond to its urban and cultural context.

Solara Light Installation for Seasonal Effectiveness Disorder
In collaboration with fellow design students Fiona Parks, Jaysa Even, and Karli Everman, we constructed a light therapy installation designed to support college students struggling with SAD by stimulating natural sunlight during the winter months, and throughout the year. The installation utilizes dynamic color therapy to boost mood and reduce stress. This installation provides a bright, accessible solution to improve mental wellbeing on campus.
This project significantly enhanced my creative collaboration and problem-solving skills. By working alongside psychology students, we conducted research on Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and developed an interdisciplinary design challenge aimed at reducing stress among students. This experience deepened my understanding of user-centered design and reinforced the value of crossdisciplinary collaboration in creating impactful, well-informed design solutions.
