SOJOURN FROM CITY TO COUNTRY
Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s bustling capital, sits at the junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers. It was a trading hub for both the Khmer Empire and French Colonialists. The mix of the ancient and modern creates unforgettable sights for all visitors. Leaving the city, the landscape abounds with rural charm. Watch farm animals roam freely along rustic byways and make pit stops to learn about the history of ancient structures that dot the landscape.

THE DESTINATION
Khum Pongro is located some 70km north of Phnom Penh, at the border between the provinces of Kampong Cham and Kampong Thom. This relatively flat area is well irrigated by one of the many tributaries of the Tonle Sap, the region’s primary river, which is a source of livelihood for many Cambodians. At Khum Pongro, r+ skun sits within Farmcube, an agri-city of farming communities.
Trodork Poung Village
Khum Pongro Commune
Farmcube Khum Pongro is positioned as a model agri-city of the future for Cambodia. It provides the infrastructure for agricultural communities to deliver produce including rice, mango and coconut, to centralised distribution centres and processing plants with ease. It comprises 1,028 hectares of farmland, with its own administration and management facilities, which are located at the Town Centre. r+ skun lies amidst padi fields inside the quadrant northeast of the Town Centre and about 800m away. Our resort brings a new business model – that of hospitality – to the communities of Khum Pongro, providing another income source and employment opportunity for the area.
OUR DESIGN INSPIRATION
The traditional Khmer house on stilts can be easily lifted, moved and relocated.

LIFE ON STILTS
Khmer house designs date back to the 1st Century AD. The houses are built with specific purposes and reflect the owner’s wealth and social status. The geographical location of the site is another key consideration. Houses are usually built on stilts to prevent flooding. r+ adopts a modular construction system to create flexible accommodation layouts. These modules are attached together in various permutations to generate a variety of room types to cater to different guests and their needs. There are green terrace modules interspersed alongside the accommodation modules to maximise greenery and showcase the farm-to-table F&B concept through the growing of microgreens and use of urban farming technologies.

DESIGN PROCESS
The expansive site allows for a distribution of the functionalities that would comprise the form of a conventional hotel block or stack in a typical urban context.
3. Volume
The resulting spaciousness evokes a sense of luxury, allowing the varied volumes and massings across the site to create a visually interesting composition of forms. This openness creates transparency and an awareness of how the different functions work together in creating an unforgettable stay experience.
