Welcome to Trinity By joining the IPU Nursing team at Trinity, you will be joining a team 130 years in the making at the oldest hospice in the UK. Despite our long history, our facilities are state of the art. Our 28-bed IPU is nestled in a stunning two-acre garden on the edge of Clapham Common, easily accessible from the northern line, London Overground and Clapham Junction station.

About the Inpatient Unit Nursing team Our Inpatient Unit Nursing team is at the heart of the specialist care we deliver. As a member of the Inpatient Unit Nursing team, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team rated Outstanding by the CQC. As well as supportive and talented colleagues in the nursing team, you will be surrounded by doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, counsellors, pharmacists, complementary therapists, welfare benefits and spiritual care specialists.

You will also work closely with CNSs in our Community Palliative Care team to ensure patients receiving care from both teams have a seamless experience.

A unique environment to develop your career

About palliative care While we welcome previous palliative care experience, we don’t require you to have worked in palliative care before joining us.

Previous Staff Nurses have joined us from backgrounds as diverse as ITU, the community, acute medical wards and care homes.

You are well-placed for a next step in palliative care if you are skilled in communication and symptom control - both skills that are naturally transferrable to Trinity’s unique inpatient environment.

No two days will be the same when you come to Trinity, but here is an idea of what you will be doing every day as a member of the IPU team.

“We have handovers around 7:30am. I say hello to the team and walk around the ward and say hello to all the patients and any visitors. It’s nice for them to know who they’ll be spending the day with and it’s the best part of my day. I enjoy getting to know them if they’re new, or having a nice chat and asking how they’ve been since I last saw them. It really puts a smile on my face and usually theirs too!

After that, the day can get quite busy. I do medicine rounds, administer some personal care to my patients, attend meetings – some days this can be bereavement meetings, staff meetings, meetings with family members, it can really vary.

I usually have some free time in the afternoon to spend with my patients and do things with them that make a difference to them and their loved ones. Sometimes I paint their nails, have a chat with them, take them into the gardens, talk to them and their loved ones and really get to know them. We’re really encouraged to make time to spend time with them and to make these moments matter.

It’s so important that we make those last few moments, days, months or years matter as you only die once. That’s something we really focus on here at Trinity."

Quality, progression, development and support To provide outstanding care you need outstanding people. So it’s important for us to make sure that our staff are well resourced, trained, supported, recognised and given the development opportunities they need to do what they do best.

Crucially at Trinity, you have the time to care and devote to your patients. Day and night, and you will always have a senior nurse and HCAs to support you.

You will meet with your dedicated line manager regularly to discuss any support you might need and the next steps in your career development. You will work together on key competencies and clinical skills. The IPU team includes dedicated link nurses who are responsible for a designated clinical area and you will have the opportunity to join one of these teams, which will allow you to get involved in teaching audit and policy reviews. To support you and your revalidation requirements, we provide: Workshops on palliative care, symptom control, bereavement, last days of life, nutrition, ethics and understanding dementia. Staff are given time to work through these units during rostered study days In-house practice supervisor courses In-house practice assessor transition courses and access to external practice assessor courses as required In-house IV study days for those who are out of practice with IV or to gain the competency Opportunities to gain further experience in various specific areas of expertise including contributing to audit Regular learning opportunities through the Ethics Forum, Reflection Sessions, Journal Club, Schwartz Centre Rounds and masterclasses (virtual and in person) All staff have access to free one-to-one counselling available by phone or face-to-face (in-person or remotely), should you need it.

Shifts and work patterns Our Band 5 nurses have the option of working long or short days with the expectation of night shifts being included in the rota.

Long day hours: 7.30am-8pm Short day hours: Early shift 07.30am-15.30pm and late shift 12.00pm-20.00pm Application process If you choose to apply, you can expect to hear from us within x days if your application has progressed to the next stage in the process.
