About the cover image PHOTOGRAPHER: Chris Renk IMAGE TITLE: Everyone is a Super Star! CAPTION: This picture is part of my “On Eye Level with Nature” project. I photographed the daisy 2012 in the Josefthal along the Hachelbach to the higher lake Spitzing. The Josefthal is ideal for nature photographers, with a soft spot for natural meadows and their inhabitants. Especially in spring, when nature is in full bloom, this is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the mountain world while taking photos of all kind of subjects.

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE RPS, ESPECIALLY THOSE OF THE GERMANY CHAPTER It was a good time…

A

fter spending 15 years together in the Royal Ph oto g r a p hic S o c ie t y, I would like to say goodbye to the RPS with this foreword and thank all C ha pte r m e m b e r s fo r their kind cooperation and support for the board work of the Chapter.

Let’s take a look back at the time we spent together. It all began with the founding of the Germany Chapter on February 8, 2009, with a visually stunning exhibition, “Blickwechsel”, in the Theatermuseum Düsseldorf, which was staged entirely over two floors, in the presence of the then President of the RPS Dr. Barry Sr. This exhibition then moved to the Parktheater in Iserlohn. In 2012, a joint projec t followed with the Hohenlimburg High School by organizing a photo competition for high school students, which resulted in an exhibition in the Young Museum of the Osthaus Museum Hagen. Another photo competition was held at this school in 2021 in collaboration with the RPS. In the years 2012 - 2021, the Germany Chapter organized a variety of exhibitions in Hagen and the surrounding area: In 2012 “Schrift” in Iserlohn, in 2014 “Weiß” in the Wasserschloß Werdringen and Fröndenberg, in 2016 “, Colour” in Nuri Iraq’s gallery in Hagen, 2017 “Reflections” in the Altes Stadtbad in Hagen, 2019 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Chapter Germany, the pop-up exhibition “Vergänglich” in a production hall in Unna, 2020 as part of the Bauhaus year under the motto of the art patron Karl-Ernst -Osthaus “Example is Everything” an exhibition in the Young Museum of the City of Hagen and then in Bocholt in the Textile Museum and most recently in 2021 “Proportions” in the gallery of the Hagenring Artists’ Association.

From 2011 to 2023, I had the honourable task of accompanying the Germany Chapter as chairman for 12 years. I am now pleased to be able to hand this task over to Chris Renk, our chapter organizer, to whom I will support everything in his additional work as the future chairman of the Germany Chapter. I wish him good luck and continued success in his tireless work. Unfortunately, I now observe the work of the Society with a certain trepidation, which, in my opinion, is becoming increasingly alienated from its international chapters (previously, there would have been significantly more than the six listed now), be it due to the Corona crisis or Brexit be it due to the tireless but increasingly confusing design of the website, with the international chapters taking up less and less space and even no longer being worth mentioning in the printed magazine. The Germany chapter is still one of the most active with its work on the quarterly e-magazine. Be it due to the financial needs, especially after the construction of the new headquarters, or the increasing personnel costs. In addition, I miss the Monthly Competition that was held many years ago, which united many members around a common theme; the printed magazine is only published six times a year, the importance of individual photographers who are highlighted with their work is becoming increasingly broader. The number of professional photographers is rising, while the number of dedicated amateurs is dwindling. So, I would like to thank you for the stimulating, wonderful 15 years in the RPS and wish the Society all the best and much success in its challenging future tasks. Of course, I remain loyal to the Germany Chapter with all my heart. Your Siegfried Rubbert

ON EYE LEVEL WITH NATURE A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXCURSION CHRIS RENK In this story “On Eye Level with Nature: A Photographic Excursion,” we explore the profound impact of photography in bringing us closer to nature, inviting us to perceive it from a different perspective – on eye level.

N

ature has always captivated the human imagination. Its beauty, diversity, and the profound sense of wonder it evokes have inspired artists, writers, and photographers throughout history. Among these, photographers hold a unique position as they can freeze moments in time, capturing the essence of nature’s grandeur and subtlety.

Capturing Nature's Essence As an art form, photography has the power to transform how we perceive the natural world. It allows us to view nature through a lens, focusing on the intricate details and the grand landscapes surrounding us. In “On Eye Level with Nature,” as a photographer, I venture into the heart of the wilderness, capturing the raw, unfiltered beauty of the world around us. By doing so, I enable us to see nature as a passive observer and an active participant in its intricate tapestry.

Bringing us Closer

The phrase “on eye level” suggests a sense of intimacy and connection, and in the context of nature photography, it signifies a deep and immersive experience. Photographers often venture into remote, untamed environments to capture images that allow us to connect with nature personally. Whether a close-up of a delicate wildflower or a majestic eagle soaring overhead, these images invite us to see nature up close and personal, forging a sense of kinship and empathy.

A Different Perspective

One of the remarkable aspects of “On Eye Level with Nature” photography is its ability to challenge preconceived notions and encourage fresh perspectives. We often perceive nature from our human-centric viewpoint, looking down on it from our elevated stature. However, photographers offer a glimpse into the world as seen by other species by capturing images from the eye level of the subject – be it a squirrel, a lizard, or a blade of grass. This shift in perspective can be transformative, fostering a deeper understanding of and respect for the natural world.

Evoke Emotion

Photographs from “On Eye Level with Nature” can be emotionally powerful. They can stir our senses, invoking awe, serenity, and melancholy. A photograph of a lone tree standing in a misty forest can convey a sense of solitude and quiet contemplation, while an image of a mother duck caring for her chicks can inspire empathy and a desire to protect their habitat. Through these images, we form emotional connections with nature, motivating us to become better stewards of the environment.

Through this art form, I invite you to see, appreciate, and connect with nature on a deeper level. The project aims to challenge you to adopt new perspectives, evoke emotions, and inspire you to take action to preserve the beauty and diversity of our planet. team, darkness and sweat, heat, dust and noise. It seems not so hard to imagine how this vast hall, full of gigantic air pumps, looked when it was still in operation. But, the physical experience was much more extreme than our current imagination. In particular, the working conditions must have been horrible. So much effort for blowing hot air! It was with a good purpose, though, that the air was blown into the blast furnaces to produce iron and steel, unlike many others that are full of hot air for nothing without making any effort. The difference was dramatically portrayed in the classic movie as a vision of the future.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT The Völklinger Hütte, also known as the Völklingen Ironworks, played a pivotal role in the industrialisation of the Saar region during the 19th and 20th centuries. Established in 1883, it was one of Europe's largest and most technologically advanced ironworks. Over the decades, it evolved into a complex of blast furnaces, steelworks, and auxiliary facilities, producing pig iron, steel, and other essential materials for various industries.

ARCHITECTURAL MARVELS The architectural significance of the Völklinger Hütte lies in its innovative industrial design. The site boasts a mesmerising blend of historical buildings and industrial structures, showcasing the evolution of industrial architecture over time. The monumental blast furnaces, massive machinery, and intricate networks of pipes and conveyors stand as testaments to human ingenuity and engineering prowess. The industrial architecture of the Völklinger Hütte is an essential part of its charm, serving as a window into the past and a reminder of the monumental changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution.

u ring th e pa s t q ua r te r, Chapter members again focused on a variety of fields of photography.

Grahame once again indulged his passion for sports photography as Horst Witthueser tried out his new iPhone 15 Pro during one of the many trips to the island of Texel in the Netherlands. S i e g f r i e d Ru b b e r t a n d E b e r h a r d Potempa also travelled within Germany and tried impressions from Frankfurt and Dienkelsbühl, which they managed impressively.

Jonathan CK Webb and Andreas Pfeiffer tried their hand at bird’s eye views, with Jonathan boarding an aeroplane and Andreas photographing downwards from an elevated position. Both pictures show how exciting and rewarding a change of perspective can be! For my part, I once again went to the Bavarian Alps to hunt for waterfalls while Martin Gerling scoured the local forests for unusual motifs. It is always amazing how diverse the interests within a photographic community can be.

I

am a photographer who loves to take colourful photographs. “The more colourful, the better” is my photographic motto. When mysticism and darkness are added, the location is perfect for me.

In 2012, I heard for the first time that a stalactite cave, the Dechenhöhle, which is not far from where I live, was illuminated. You have to go there, was my first thought. In 2013, the time finally came. I was able to dive into the colourful underworld for the first time.

From 2017 onwards, my interest in changing photographic subjects when taking pictures increased. However, I did not have the opportunity to enter the colourful underworld again until 2022. Here, I managed to change the illumination through the photographs so that I reached, from my point of view, the world of abstract photography.

SELECTS: BEST COMPACT TRAVEL CAMERAS IN 2023 AN MPB GUIDE In the past, precious life moments—especially those that took place on holiday—would be captured on a small, pocketable camera that would accompany you everywhere.

W

ith improvements in smartphone camera tech, why carry a compact camera at all? After all, you usually have your phone on you. Many photographers believe a ‘proper’ camera can capture better images, encourages a more thoughtful photography process and is more fun to use. And now, some compact cameras are almost as small as smartphones and still able to hold their own against much larger DSLRs.

But what are the best compact cameras for travel photography? In this article, MPB’s Connor Redmond tests the best compact cameras for any budget: • Ricoh GR III • Sony RX100 VII • Leica Q2 • Fujifilm X100V • Panasonic DMC-TZ200 “Over to you, Connor.” For a recent holiday, I wanted to see if I could ditch the phone for the point-and-shoot style and replace my phone with a great compact camera. I was looking for a small, lightweight camera that would make me want to seek out great photos and capture the essence of the places I visited. I didn’t want to change lenses, so that narrowed the options down to a fixed-lens camera. Compared to smartphones, compact cameras have a far bigger sensor, better resolution and wider dynamic range. They can shoot in RAW, which helps to soak up every bit of juicy detail and dial in a certain look in post-production. Their lenses are generally fast, sharp and versatile. Most importantly, these compact cameras are, well, compact. I still want to enjoy my holiday without too much gear getting in the way.

How did they fit so much into a camera that is only 257 grams? It’s the smallest and lightest camera on this list but packed full of features. The Ricoh GR III punches well above its weight and can rival the image quality of much, much bigger cameras. It is a perfect camera for street and travel-style photography, equipped with a sharp 28mm equivalent f/2.8 lens. Or if you prefer a tighter focal length the Ricoh GR IIIx variant is equipped with a 40mm equivalent f/2.8 lens. The hybrid autofocus system is much improved from its predecessor, the Ricoh GR II. You can confidently rely on the autofocus for quick street snaps.

If you don’t enjoy editing RAWs, the Ricoh GR III has a range of picture profiles to use for JPEGs. However, I would avoid the ‘Std’ profile as it is quite flat. But it’s worth playing around with the other colour styles, you’re sure to find one you like. I found them to be just as good as Fujifilm’s film simulation profiles. There are some downsides to this camera to consider. The main one being the battery life—if you intend to shoot all day then I’d recommend carrying multiple batteries with you. Luckily, they are tiny and light. If having no in-built viewfinder is a dealbreaker, then this may not be the camera for you. However, you can buy an optical viewfinder as a compromise. Also, if you’re interested in video, then this is not going to give you the quality you’re after.

Ricoh GR IIIx | f/8.0 | 1/500 sec | ISO 100

Overall, this camera shines in all the areas that matter for travel photographers. A sensor and lens combination of this quality should cost a lot more than it does, and this camera will continuously surprise you with what it can achieve. It is a little pocket rocket of a camera. Check out our Ricoh GR III review for travel photography if you want to learn more and see more images this camera can create.

Speed and accuracy in a tiny, tiny package. The Sony RX100 VII is the seventh iteration of the RX100 series of ultra-compact ‘travel zoom’ cameras. As you would expect from Sony, they have finely refined their formula which makes this compact camera so compelling. Sony has managed to pack an incredible amount of features into the RX100 VII. So if you are a shooter who loves a camera that can do everything well and values customisation, then this camera might be the one to pick up for your next big trip abroad.

Sony RX100 VII | 13mm | f/11 | 1/250 sec | ISO 100

Let’s start with the best parts of this palm-sized camera. The autofocus rarely misses a beat, Sony has been killing it with their autofocus tech in the higher-end Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras and they have ported over the same magically fast autofocus here. The zoom lens is one of the best and you get an enormous 24-200mm range to use, so all but the most telephoto or wide angle cases can be easily shot. The pop-up electronic viewfinder is very handy to have and the screen is high enough quality to continuously shoot with. The 4K video from this camera is very impressive and very stabilised. There’s next to no rolling shutter, and shots look buttery smooth—even if you don’t have the steadiest of hands. So, if you’re interested in the best video from your compact travel camera, we would recommend the Sony RX100 VII. When it comes to image quality, you’ll get good colour and detail—even in JPEG files. It really shines in RAW where there is a surprising amount of dynamic range to play with. There’s also a 20 frames-per-second burst mode, if you need to capture some very fast-moving action.

The user interface is not as user-friendly as it could be. It can get a little frustrating at times to try to find the setting you want to change. It’s also not at its strongest in low-light situations, as shots can begin to look quite noisy. Some of the physical buttons might just be a tad too small, perhaps a compromise due to it being such a small camera, but it can also be a bit slippery and hard to hold sometimes. Overall though, this is a phenomenal camera for its size and it really is a do-it-all type of deal here. If you want something that can do everything well, then this is your pick.

Leica is known for its uncompromising philosophy when it comes to perfecting its vision of a perfect camera. Its ‘Timeless, reliable, and durable’ design drives the entire way of thinking, and this is no different with the Leica Q2. As soon as you pick up and use any Leica Q for that matter, you know you are using a premium camera. No other camera can match the ergonomics of the well-thought-out Leica Q series. The Leica Q2 feels natural in the hand while walking around taking photographs. Once you get used to using the 28mm f/1.7 Summilux lens, the camera almost fades away and you can enjoy the minimal-effort shooting experience that Leica has so carefully honed over the years.

Leica Q2 | f/2.8 | 28mm | 1/250 sec | ISO 800

You will not be disappointed with the RAW images that are rendered with the Q2. It is the only camera on the list with a full-frame sensor, and the resulting detail is outstanding. Pictures from the Q2 have a tonality to them unlike any other camera on this list. Even in low light, the ISO performance is superb with limited noise. But, if you do find yourself in a very low-light situation, even the noise has an almost filmic grain structure to it.

Leica Q2 | f/4.0 | 28mm | 1/160 sec | ISO 50

What makes this particular Leica good for travel or street photography? In short, the gorgeous lens paired with the full-frame sensor. The lens is perfectly married to the sensor. It feels like they are working together in harmony to create the smoothest, least distracting shooting experience—so that you can focus on the decisive moment in front of you. Here you are getting a fully featured, non-compromising lens that also has a macro mode— the fixed 28mm f/1.7 Summilux, which true to other Leica Summilux lenses—remains sharp to f/1.7, rendering an almost dreamy consistency shooting wide open. In the image below, shot with the original Leica Q, you can see how using the f/1.7 aperture can almost ‘cut out’ the subject from its background.

The Fujifilm X100V is another camera in the mould of old rangefinders. Combined with Fujifilm’s years of experience in colour science, you can really perfect that ‘film look’. And that’s exactly what the X100 series has always tried to achieve—a modern replacement for a film point-and-shoot rangefinder. And for the most part, it triumphantly achieves this. These cameras have been impossible to find in recent years. The Fujifilm X100V has been an incredible success—especially on social media—due to the camera’s ability to recreate different film stocks using the film simulation modes.

Connor Redmond | Fujifilm X100V | 23mm | f/2.0 | 1/300 sec | ISO 160

There is a reason for this renewed attention: the photographs from the Fujifilm X100V are exceptional. Equipped with its 26-megapixel X-Trans sensor and even more film simulation picture profiles, you can consistently create beautiful JPEGs. And that’s a big bonus if you are on the road and don’t have a lot of time to edit RAW images. The Fujifilm X100V also boasts a redesigned 23mm f/2.0 lens, which fixes the close-up ‘haze’ issue from previous models and improves sharpness in the corners of the frame. The low-light performance has also been updated, along with the lenses’ autofocus ability in low-light situations.

Ergonomically, the X100V is maybe one of the best cameras on the market for that street shooting style. The Fujifilm X100V now has an updated tilting touchscreen so you can ‘shoot from the hip’. The hybrid optical-electronic viewfinder remains to be an engineering marvel, allowing you to either shoot with a fantastic electronic viewfinder or an analogue with frame lines at the switch of a button. That feature makes the camera a joy to use. On an emotional level, this camera has rekindled my love for photography. The camera manages to make your images sing beautifully before you even get to the editing suite. Find out more in our Fujifilm X100V review or check out our Fujifilm X100F review for travel. The least expensive camera on the list, the Panasonic DMC-TZ200 represents the best value for money. The TZ200 is a serious contender for the perfect beginner’s travel compact camera that can do most things to an admirable and acceptable level. The first and most glaring feature of the TZ200 is its ridiculously long zoom lens—the longest of any 1-inch sensor compact—a 15x zoom, equivalent to a 24-360mm lens. It can, in theory, be used for anything from wildlife photography to landscape photography.

On average, photo quality is satisfactory on the TZ200. But because of the nature of the zoom lens, the centre of the images can be a bit soft at times. You will definitely have to shoot in RAW to help you when you come to edit these photos. But the TZ200 is capable of retaining good detail in the shadows, so you can protect those highlights.

Panasonic DMC-TZ200 | 9mm | f/8.0 | 1/320 sec | ISO 125

The battery life of the TZ200 is impressive and it will efficiently get you through the day on one battery if you are not shooting too heavily. A key takeaway from using the TZ200 was there are lots of compromises to fit the ludicrous zoom lens in such a small body. But if you are looking for a truly compact camera, which is easy to use, versatile and not too expensive, the TZ200 is the one to consider.

CONCLUSION The best compact camera for you will depend on your preferences and your level of skill. But the perfect one will become part of your everyday carry, a camera that becomes your companion wherever you go and replaces your phone. There is a huge amount of value in a dedicated travel camera, the tricky part is picking the right one for you. Take time to consider which camera would work best for you. What sort of photographs or looks you would like to achieve? Instead of getting the highest megapixel count or longest zoom, think about which of the features you’re most likely to use. If you want to take fun candid photos of family and friends, or document your life, then consider the all-round compacts with large zooms to cover all your bases. If you are more interested in street and lifestyle photography, then look at fixed-lens cameras. If you are someone that wants a minimal shooting style then look at what Fujifilm and Leica offer. Ultimately, you want taking pictures to be a satisfying and rewarding experience. “Take a look at our full range of Premium Compact Cameras from MPB and discover more articles on travel photography below.
