TheSouthWestVisualArtGroupmeton Saturday,21st June2025.Theeventwasagreat successwith40photographersfromthroughout theSouthWestRegiona�ending.Wewere delightedtohaveLeighPrestonFRPSasour speaker.Withhispresenta�onen�tled“Roads LessTravelled”Leighshowedusawideselec�on ofhiswork–ajourneythatfeaturedmany projectsincludingurbanandindustrial
landscapesathomeandabroad.Hisstylewas simpleyetveryexpressiveandhisimages,o�en rawandunpolished,accentuatedthefeelingof nostalgiaforthoselong-gonedays.Leighcame toushighlyrecommendedandhavingseenhis workpreviously,Iknewwewereinforatreat. Apartfromhispowerfulphotography,what madehispresenta�onsowellreceived,ishis charmand,judgingbythelaugherinthe audience,hisgreatsenseofhumour.
Leigh’spresenta�onwasdigital,buthealso sharedwithushisprintsandtalkedaboutthe importanceofchoosingtherightkindofpaper whenprin�ngourwork.
Thea�ernoon’ssessionwasdedicatedtoour par�cipantsshowingtheirwork.Asusualthere wasawiderangeofsubjectscovered,created usingdifferenttechniques–mul�pleexposures, ICM,Adamskieffectetc.Therewasalsoan opportunityforpar�cipantstosharetheir“work inprogress”–whetherpreparingapanelforan RPSdis�nc�onorsomeotherproject.Thisisa veryimportantpartofourevent–tobeableto showourworkinafriendlyenvironmentandget feedbackfromotherpar�cipants.

Adailywalkwiththecamerainthecountryside aroundourFrenchhouseprovidedareflec�ve momentwithNatureasthefieldschangedcolour duringthesummermonths.

Poppiesprovideddrama�cswathesofred, carpe�ngtheland,whichwasthentakenoverby thewhitevariety,bothdisplayingdelicatepaper likeblooms.
Floweringaroundthesame�me,somefields thatwerefilledwithwhitepoppies,containeda fewsurvivingredbloomsresemblinganar�st’s canvasdaubedwithredpaint

Walkingcarefullyamongstaseaofwhiteblooms, andsurroundedbypoppyseedheads,Ino�ced thatthereweremorewildflowerscreepinginto thefields,especiallythewhitelacey,umbrella shapedbloomsofCowParsley.

Suchavarietyofcolourstocapturebeforethe harvestoftheseedheads.
However,thelocalpale�ewasabouttochange, differentcolours

werenowen�cingmetootherfields.

So�,purplehuesofFlaxappearedwhilst Sunflowerswerepain�ngthebrightyellowof summer.

Mywalksaroundtheseneighbouringfields duringsummerneverdisappointed,different light,differentcropsanddifferentcolours providedmewithaconstantlychangingsummer canvas.

Therearemajorchangesthisyeartothe Members’Exhibi�on,notleastthatwewillno longerhaveatravellingprintedexhibi�on!
