Wendy North showed the group some of the book projects she had been working on over the last few months. Notes from the Editor August sees a revamped launch of Yorkshire Region News with a new layout and design. I seem to feature in several places in this edi on because I started with very li le content and wanted to include ar cles that are new to Yorkshire Region News, such as `Focus on Photography’. I am hoping that members who read this will be inspired to o er something similar for the next newsle er. It might be a personal project you’ve been engaged with or maybe something that you’ve done in your Special Interest Group mee ng or perhaps within your camera club. Please get in touch - we’d love to hear from you.

At least you get an early introduc on to the photographic interests of your editor. In fact editors, because for this edi on I’ve been joined by Mary Crowther who has been busy organising events for the Visual Art North Group. So all in all an edi on that is strong on Visual Art Photography.

Something I would be happy to rebalance in future edi ons if people are willing to share content. For this edi on I’ve had fantas c support from friends who have contributed to `Outside the Frame’, and from others who have shared news about what is happening next in the Contemporary North, DIG North and the Documentary Groups. Please get in touch if you have informa on about what is happening in your groups, especially if you have meet-ups planned in the region.

I would like to share some of my thoughts about how the newsle er might work over the next year, which is the mespan I’ve ini ally commi ed to. I see the role of the newsle er as providing informa on about upcoming events, celebra ng achievements and sharing ideas that can inspire. I think in many ways we are s ll nding ways of sharing and suppor ng one another a er the emergence of the Covid Leeds Dock pandemic, which I feel isn’t over yet. You will be very important in helping the RPS Yorkshire Region to move forward. We de nitely need your ideas and input without them the newsle er will be li le more than a list of dates.

At the moment I’m seeing the newsle er as coming out three mes a year in 2023: January, May, September.

If you want to be part of this new endeavour and would be happy to take on the challenge, I’m looking for a co-editor. This is not a job for one! We all need support.

Notes from the commi ee This year our events have started somewhat slowly, which will hardly come as a surprise, given the last couple of years.

Like everyone I s ll have some concerns about the coming months and the impact this might have on events. We have, therefore, taken the decision to keep all the remaining regional events for 2022 online. Our only face to face events will be those where we collaborate with Special Interest Groups.

We have a new look to our newsle er and want to welcome Wendy North to the team. She has worked hard to provide a new approach to sharing informa on about photography in the region. Wendy feels her strength lies in the visual aspects of design and layout and would welcome someone who feels that `words’ are their strength. The Digital Imaging Group for Yorkshire & the North East The DIG Print Exhibi on 2022 will be in the Yorkshire Region from Tuesday 9th to Sunday 28th August 2022 at the York Theatre Royal.

Displaying some of the best images in this lovely informal se ng in the café area, they will form both a print and digital display throughout the exhibi on running me.

Jose´ Closs has been a keen photographer for the last 20 years. She is interested in producing images that highlight the extraordinary elements from our ordinary surroundings. Increasingly she is producing images which draw on abstrac on and magical realism.

Pandemic Projects `The restric ons of the rst Covid lockdown which started in March 2020, was, for me, the catalyst for some new photographic ac vi es.

Like many others, I decided to produce an image every day, and con nued this for 100 days. Pictures were either completely new or a reprocessing of old images using new techniques to produce something di erent. This session will illustrate some of the projects derived from whatever I could nd at home or on the doorstep.’

Focus on Photography Banner; Glenys Garne

I’m seeing this as a model that we could continue in future editions of Yorkshire News. I know that people often don’t volunteer themselves and want to be asked (but what if I don’t know you are there?)

For several months during lockdown I’d been talking with friends about forming a small group who shared an interest in pushing the boundaries and exploring the art side of photography. So following a conversa on with Glenys Garne on Zoom during the late Autumn of 2020 we decided to set up a group based in Yorkshire. This would work in a similar way to the North East Crea ve Photographers, of which I was a member. We got in touch with a few photographers that we knew to be interested in crea ve image making and asked if they would like to join us in a small Zoom group. We had a very posi ve response and the ac ve members of our group are now: Janet Burdon, José Closs, Julie Cowdy, Glenys Garne , Wendy North and Sylvia Slavin.

For this article I need to say a big thank you to the Yorkshire creative photography group, `Outside the Frame’, who have helped me put this article together.

I

Our group is about sharing the ideas and thinking that go into our images. Working in a small group has been crucial in fostering understanding of each other’s approaches . It has worked as a catalyst for sparking ideas which we have explored individually and then shared at one of our monthly sessions. For example, at an early mee ng Julie suggested we work on the theme `plas c’. The diverse interpreta ons of this theme that emerged were inspiring. Images were shared that were not your usual camera club o ering and I suspect that some judges simply wouldn’t have understood, but then we weren’t doing it for the judges, we were doing it for ourselves and for one another. We are now in our second year of mee ng and everyone in our group looks forward to our monthly get togethers which last 2 to 2.5 hours depending on discussions. We are very di erent in our styles, but we all feel we have been sparked by the ideas of members of the group.

So please share - it could be about what’s happening in your club, in your personal photography in your RPS Special Interest Group Please help to make what’s happening in Yorkshire an inspiring read.

Janet Burdon “I’m probably best known for my winter monochrome and more recently for my ower photography. With lockdown meaning I couldn’t travel, photographing the owers in my garden and local walks meant that I was able to con nue my crea ve journey.

For this par cular image I wanted to create a more impressionis c, rather than representa onal image of the owers, so using Lensbaby op cs has allowed me that crea ve freedom.

I used the widest aperture of f1.6 which gave the ower a very so glow and blurred the background out completely. I don’t mind at all that there is nothing sharp in the image, to me it re ects the so ness of the subject.

Being a member of the group has opened my eyes to di erent ideas and inspired me to try something di erent such as crea ve architectural photography, which I would probably never have considered previously.

I’m now more inclined to try and push the boundaries of what my camera will do and I’m constantly learning new ways of doing things.

This is a mul ple exposure of a building in Redcar using the lighten blend mode. I par cularly love the way you can take something like a building façade and make it unrecognisable and totally abstract. At mes it may seem like taking random images and hoping they will work but I’ve found with me I’m thinking much more about how I blend the images together to make a cohesive whole.’

José Closs “I’m the newest member of the group, having joined early this year. A er two years of Covid incarcera on, it has been a real pleasure to share work with people who think crea vely about what they see. Our di erent ways of looking at the world have sparked o ideas which have added to my own way of seeing.

Overall I have been inspired more by ar sts than photographers, and David Hockney’s ability to see colours in the landscape has strongly in uenced my work. One ongoing project is to pull out colours that are there, but almost hidden, as in this snow scene. All those colours were present, but have been exaggerated.

Another strand of work has been using mul ple exposures as a way of capturing architectural details, by abstrac ng them and manipula ng colour. Increasingly I nd myself using Lightroom like a paintbox, especially with the new selec on (masking) tools. This photo of city centre brickwork has been recoloured and the Photoshop warp tool used to add a diagonal element.”

Julie Cowdy “My default subjects are owers and s ll life. The technique that I am best known for is crea ve composite images and I would describe myself as a photoar st.

I accepted an invita on to join a group of crea ve Yorkshirebased female photographers during lockdown.

This gave me the mo va on to get out and make images on a regular basis. I love the opportunity to see the interes ng crea ons the others show during our monthly zoom chats. I also enjoy some helpful feedback on my latest images.

I prefer to work on projects.

When I look at the ‘straight out of camera’ picture I ask myself, ‘So what now?’ and every photograph that I select becomes a poten al part in a process towards a composite. One of the projects I suggested was to create work in the style of Sco sh crea ve photographer Stan Farrow. My “Lavender’s blue, dilliy dilly” was one of the outcomes.

I’m now working towards a new project based on the owers that I grew from bulbs and then photographed this Spring. I don’t usually plan in advance, my work o en evolves over me as I absorb ideas.” h ps://www.Facebook.com/JulieCowdyPhotography

Glenys Garnett “I’m generally known for being a very crea ve photographer always willing to push the boundaries and try something new with my image making. The group has a diverse range of ar s c skills but we are predominantly photographers who have an ‘outside the box’ way of thinking when it comes to crea ve work. Having a background in educa on my ethos has always been about sharing ideas and exper se and the group follows that principle. We have thrown out a number of challenges to each other and it always amazes me how di erent our approaches are and the diversity of images we produce. When Julie suggested the plas cs theme I took it on board in my usual way and thought, `how can I do something di erent with this’.

These 3 images are what I came up with. They are mul ple exposure images with a texture and some colour changes. You don’t really need to know what they are but for the curious amongst you they are made from the plas c top of a dog food bin and a tube of hair gel. It gives power to the adage I use frequently, we don’t have to photograph something for what it is, we can photograph it for what we want it to be.”

Wendy North “In the early days of the group Julie men oned Stan Farrow and we agreed that we would look at his website and use it as a s mulus for crea ng our own images. I chose the least typical `Stan Farrow’ album which consisted of black and white photographs of paper strips. My abstract images were created from a single strip of red corrugated card, a square of folded wallpaper, and light projected through coloured perspex. Using in-camera mul ple exposure (and supported via Zoom by Glenys) the single strip of red card became three and by playing with the white-balance sliders in Lightroom I discovered a whole di erent world of colour.

I began to explore book making earlier in the year when I came across a blog wri en by The Curious Printmaker where she demonstrated how to construct an `explosion book’ which I found was an ideal way to showcase micro-world images of the paint spla ers and sand pa erns that I’d taken on the Isle of Harris. It re-kindled my enthusiasm for making my own books and I’ve chosen to share my latest book here which is a ` ag’ book. This form allows me to tell a dual narra ve at the same me. As you turn the bo om page the top row also moves. The images contrast the lives of rich and poor as they may have been experienced in the locality of Barnsley where I live. The project has been a long me in coming to frui on and you may have seen links to it before on Facebook, Instagram and most recently in the RPS Contemporary Newsle er, Concept. It began life as an experiment with using in-camera mul ple exposure and grew into a personal re-telling of a tragedy in our locality that took the lives of 26 children.”

Sylvia Slavin “I’ve chosen to go for an Andy Gray style as the group chat inspired me to try that type of image.

It took me out of my comfort zone and meant I visited a couple of loca ons that were away from my usual haunt. It also encouraged me to try new processing techniques.

Visual Art North Student Focus Blackpool On a recent Photo Walk in Blackpool we were given a tour of the latest exhibi on of student work at the HIVE, and in a fortunate turn I was introduced to an incredible young photographer Joseph Franki -Kennedy, exhibi ng his yearend work from Lancaster. This had been the rst opportunity a er the pandemic that students had found it possible to showcase their work. On talking to this young man, you could iden fy with his ambi on and his con dence on aiming high and why not.

Mary Crowther We put a few ques ons to Joseph and he obliged with replies, and have included a few images from his exhibited material.

3 – Who or what in uences you to create the work you do?

Answer – I have always loved taking photos since I was quite young, mostly photographing owers in my garden or images of the places I was visi ng. I have always been quite crea ve from a young age and studied Graphic Design and various other crea ve subjects in high-school however, I decided to try something new at A-level which was photography. With the help of my fantas c tutors, Caroline Johnson and Andrew Hardy, helping me to explore new genres and techniques constantly helping me push my boundaries. That's when I developed my prac ce and found my love for fashion photography.

I have now gone on to University at UClan just about to nish my second year excited to see where my photography takes me.

Answer – A huge inspira on for me is Nick Knight, his work is just incredible. I love how he captures movement in the garments he's photographing, the striking looks and poses. I also love how he captures the weird and wonderful through his image-making and his connec on with his models on set. Another huge in uence for me is Lady Gaga, which is where my project's main inspira on has come from. The art she creates is shocking, weird and extremely beau ful. I love looking back at past photoshoots, fashion lms especially those created

by Nick Knight and the di erent fashion stunt performances she pulled from the beginnings of her career. Gaga con nues to fascinate and amaze me, inspiring me to create images and videos which will make you say ‘wow’.

Answer – I really want to get out into the industry as soon as possible and work with big Fashion houses such as Balenciaga and Mugler, working with a crea ve team crea ng campaigns and magazine editorials. I'm really looking forward to travelling and mee ng fellow crea ves along the way and seeing where my photography takes me. For my recent project which I just exhibited, I explored videography for the very rst me on a technical level. I'm really looking forward to crea ng some really exci ng projects exploring fashion lms and advertorials.

Joseph Franki -Kennedy, exhibi ng his year-end work from Lancaster Title Name: An Amalgama on Of Alter Ego’s Inspired By Lady Gaga “In my project I have explored four of Gaga’s songs and have chosen to visualise them into a series of images and short Fashion Films. The chosen songs are, Bad Romance, Judas, Paparazzi and Telephone.’ for each song I have researched their deeper meanings, the work that went into each music video inspiring my own work, thinking of the di erent feelings and thoughts through each verse and lyric and how I translate that into an image, and working with a crea ve team to help my vision come to life. Each song has a set of three images of these characters and alter ego’s I have created alongside with a short fashion lm to make these alter ego’s come to life.”

We are o ering an opportunity to showcase outstanding students from crea ve arts and photography in a regular ‘Student Focus’ area of the regional news.

Yorkshire Documentary Group This group was set up 4 years ago by Graham Evans and met ini ally on the outskirts of York. It moved to Boston Spa before the pandemic set in and has func oned via Zoom ever since. We have 6 mee ngs a year held on the second Thursday of the month. In between some of us have been mee ng up in places like York, Leeds or Whitby.

We have about 14 members who live in all parts of Yorkshire and members share documentary images they have taken at our Zoom mee ngs. Three members have succeeded in ge ng RPS Associateships over the me we have been mee ng and two are working towards their Fellowships at the moment. It is a very friendly and suppor ve group. Meet upstairs at Mackie Mayor [food court],1 Eagle Street, Manchester M4 5BU, we can have a co ee and introduce ourselves.

Redeveloped by Muse, Mackie Mayor is the only remaining fully intact building from former Smith eld market. Opened in 1858, it was originally used as a fresh produce market, but lay empty since the early 1990’s.

We will walk our way through the Northern Quarter of this city. For decades, Manchester’s Northern Quarter just scraping the edge of the city centre, was described as ‘up and coming’, with its ar san bakeries, next to adult book stores.

It isn’t just a hipster hot spot, it’s an eclec c, fun welcoming area of the city centre ever changing and evolving that should be explored. The photo opportuni es are boundless, most people will rstly associate this area with street photography but it is much more in exploring this rabbit-warren of shops and architect buildings galore.

This is a distance of about 2 miles so comfortable footwear and appropriate clothes for the season are advisable.

This has recently culminated in a `book making project’ where I compare the rich man in his castle (Wentworth Castle) to the `poor man’ who lost children in the Huskar Pit Disaster.
