WELCOME In order to celebrate 20 years of the Creative Careers Centre (formerly known as the Woodhouse Centre), we are delighted to announce a series of 20+ digital careerfocused events throughout the month of June 2020.

When we first set about organising our celebratory plans earlier this year, they certainly didn’t look as they do now. Out of necessity, we have adapted to the new online-based world in which we find ourselves and, most importantly, refocused our efforts to best support RCM musicians through these challenging times.

The series – The Modern Musician: Past, Present, & Future – is designed to explore the music industry of today, and how its future might evolve. Through workshops, panel talks, and discussions with industry specialists and RCM graduates, we will provide an inclusive platform for musicians to have an open dialogue with some of the industry’s most leading individuals. We also aim to equip upcoming graduates and recent graduates with essential skills for professional life, hear from those following alternative career paths, and take a look at the impact of COVID-19 on the industry.

Furthermore, we’re excited to launch our latest scheme: RCM PushFar, which is a career development mentor scheme that allows final-year students the opportunity to connect directly with graduates. Its work quickly became woven into the fabric of the RCM, raising awareness among students of the challenges ahead, and supporting them as they developed the resources and mindset to flourish. WORKSHOPS FOR UPCOMING GRADUATES Abbie Royston, Manager of The Musician’s Answering Service, and Lucy Hare, double bassist and personal coach, collaborate for the first four sessions in the Beyond the RCM series. Upcoming graduates are encouraged to join them to explore essential skills for the modern musician in these interactive Zoom workshops. Abbie Royston Manager, The Musician’s Answering Service Abbie Royston is the Manager of The Musician’s Answering Service. She joined MAS in 1998 after leaving university and took over the MAS support services from Richard Smith in 2008, offering 1:1 guidance to both recent graduates and established musicians on self-promotion and marketing, CV presentation and working as a freelancing musician.

Over the past 10 years she has been working with music colleges providing a careers advice service, developed with the Creative Careers Centre, supporting orchestral students at the start of their professional life. maslink.co.uk

Lucy Hare Double bass player & personal coach Lucy Hare is a double bass player and personal coach.

She has worked as a freelance bass player for 30 years, and has had a busy and varied career. She currently works regularly with the BBCSO and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures dance company, but has also run her own Argentinean tango quintet (Tango Volcano) for 10 years, and been a founder member of the eccentric sextet, Oxford Concert Party, where she discovered the addictive qualities of tango music and dancing.

Lucy trained as a coach 10 years ago after a period of injury to her back. Alongside her music work she now runs her own coaching business (Arts Coaching). She works with performers of all disciplines, both 1:1 coaching and groups, running regular workshops and coaching retreats.

BEYOND THE RCM A GUIDE TO ONLINE TEACHING PART 1: SETTING UP YOUR ONLINE PRACTICE Monday 15 June 2020, 2pm

Are you finding yourself needing to teach online for the first time? RCM graduate and Creative Careers Centre team member Laurence Astill shares his top tips for successful online teaching, from his experience running the new RCM Online Teaching Service, and his own private and school teaching work.

Laurence Astill Creative Careers Centre Administrator, RCM Freelance saxophonist and teacher Laurence Astill is a South of England based Saxophonist who graduated from the Royal College of Music in 2018. Having completed his undergraduate degree in Music at the University of Southampton, he began studying for his Master of Performance under the tutelage of Kyle Horch in September 2016. During his studies, he won the renowned Jane Melber Saxophone Prize, and has since performed in prestigious locations including the Royal Albert Hall and the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. Laurence enjoys a varied portfolio career encompassing teaching, performance and music administration. He has been a member of the Creative Careers Centre since 2018 and enjoys running the RCM Teaching Service/Online Teaching Service. He also offers 1-1 advice on writing funding applications as well as supporting students with general enquiries regarding careers in music. His freelance work includes a wide teaching base of private pupils and also peripatetic work in a number of schools. He teaches a range of ages and abilities as well as other woodwind instruments. He is a founding member of the Momentum Saxophone Quartet, formed in 2015. In 2016 they were chosen to premiere Martin Humphries’ new work for saxophone quartet and chorus, Moz Pit. The RCM’s Digital Learning Manager Thom Gilbert shares his recommendations for the best technology out there for enabling music lessons to go ahead successfully whilst we continue to work remotely.

Thom Gilbert Digital Learning Manager, RCM Thom Gilbert is the RCM’s Digital Learning Manager and specialises in the use of technology in music education. Before joining the RCM Thom spent twelve years leading Music and Music Technology departments in Brighton and Sussex and, in his last role, leading on Digital Learning and Literacy at a whole school level. Thom has wide ranging performing experience, from choral singing at the BBC Proms and under conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, to supporting Passenger as a solo artist and performing live electronica.

Professional Engagements Coordinator Ellie McAllister leads this workshop showing you the most efficient and effective way to prepare a CV and job application to maximise your chance of success. Find useful tips for applying for opportunities both within and outside of the music industry.

Ellie McAllister Professional Engagements Coordinator, RCM Ellie McAllister started working at the RCM in 2015 in the Performance and Programming department. She moved to work in the Creative Careers Centre in 2017, and has held two positions in the team – Administrator, and her current role, Professional Engagements Coordinator.

Ellie graduated with a First Class Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Surrey in 2015, where she studied as an HR Taylor Trust and academic scholar. She focused on flute performance as her principal study under Deborah Davis, and in 2015 won the Pennington Manches performance competition. Alongside this, she developed her interest in arts administration and employability, undertaking a Year in Industry, and culminating in her final year research project assessing the perception of music as a subject and the employability of the subject’s graduates.

She enjoys working with people from different walks of life, and has also worked in the External Relations team at St Paul’s School, at Warminster School, and has volunteered with organisations including Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice and the York Road Project choir for the homeless.

Do you have an idea for a business, but aren’t sure how to make it happen? Diana Roberts, the RCM’s Creative Careers Centre Manager and Entrepreneurship Tutor, explains how to design your own business plan in this webinar, with the opportunity to ask your own questions.

Diana Roberts Creative Careers Centre Manager & Entrepreneurship Tutor, RCM Since joining the RCM in 2004, Diana Roberts has specialised in the development of the College's careers services for both its students and graduates. She currently manages the flagship Creative Careers Centre and delivers a range of entrepreneurial courses, including Creative Enterprise, Creative Project Management and Music Administration, as well as contributing to the first module of its kind – Women in Music.

As part of developing a range of professional portfolio development schemes, wherein musicians gain first hand experience of working in the industry, Diana has established a plethora of high profile concert series at many prestigious venues across the UK, including: Royal Albert Hall, St James's Piccadilly, Pallant House Gallery (Chichester) and The Venue (Leeds).

Her passion for multi-discipline artistic collaboration has played a substantial role in the innovative expansion of the Creative Careers Centre's scope. From conception to realisation, Diana has successfully spearheaded creative initiatives with the likes of: the National Gallery, V&A Museum, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, The British Library and most recently the Royal Academy of Arts. In the process, she has significantly broadened the nature of professional opportunities for musicians and composers; and drawn considerable national media attention – both broadcast and in print – to the work of the RCM and its students.

Diana draws on her personal experience of previously working as a freelance musician, and is currently a trustee of Street Orchestra Live.

BEYOND THE RCM FINANCE MATTERS Monday 29 June 2020, 2pm

Tax specialist Trevor Ford will lead this talk helping you to get to grips with the financial aspects of working on a self-employed basis. Trevor will guide you through the complexities of tax regulations, expenses and how to manage your income.

Trevor Ford Trevor Ford initially trained to be a chartered accountant, leaving the accountancy profession to study flute at the Royal Academy of Music, where he gained the Academy’s Recital Diploma. He then embarked on a career as a freelance orchestral musician, working with many of the UK's leading orchestras, including a long period as a member of the Orchestra of English National Ballet. In 1979, he accepted the position of orchestral manager with the English Sinfonia, continuing in post until 2003. Simultaneously, he was orchestral manager of the Philomusica of London, the Ambache Chamber Orchestra and the Midland Philharmonic Orchestra. Trevor is now general manager of the English Festival Orchestra, which he founded in 1984. The orchestra appears regularly at major venues throughout the UK, and has particular associations with the ‘From Scratch’ concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and with the Leith Hill Musical Festival.

Alongside his work within the orchestral profession, Trevor Ford runs an accountancy practice which handles the tax affairs of more than three hundred freelance musicians.

He lectures on finance and careers guidance at music colleges throughout the UK, and is a professor at the Guildhall School, where he is responsible for the Music Administration module.

Whilst in Berlin he played with many groups including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra He was a member of the Brindisi Quartet for six years. Nina Swann Strategic Director: Musicians Development; Director (South East), Live Music Now Nina Swann is the London and South East Director of Live Music Now. She has considerable music outreach experience, developing and managing programmes at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the London Symphony Orchestra, The Opera Group and Sound Connections. She has a particular interest in schools, families and the under-5s, and in developing and supporting individuals and ensembles working with those groups. Nina is a classically trained oboist and singer and still performs when given the chance. She is also mum to three lively daughters and governor at a local children's centre.

David McCleery Concerts & Events Manager, St James’s Piccadilly David McCleery is Concerts & Events Manager at St James’s Piccadilly. Originally hailing from Belfast, he studied Music at Manchester University before embarking on a career in music management. In this session, a panel of experts from important organisations for composers to be aware of share what they are doing during this pandemic, and what the future looks like in the industry. Harriet Wybor Relationship Manager, Classical, PRS for Music Harriet is responsible for managing PRS for Music’s relationships with composers, music publishers and the wider classical sector, providing business support to PRS for Music’s members with the aim of maximising revenues. She has created a portfolio of development opportunities for composers including seminars, workshops, showcases and commissioning partnerships, and works with education providers and arts organisations across the UK to raise awareness about PRS for Music. Before joining PRS for Music in 2016, Harriet spent the first part of her career working in music publishing at Wise Music Group and Manners McDade and has expertise in copyright, royalties, licensing and international operations. She originally studied music and received an MA in Composition from Durham University followed by an LLM in Intellectual Property Law from the University of Edinburgh in 2009, most recently completing an MBA with distinction from Durham University in 2019. Harriet is also a Board Trustee at Tŷ Cerdd and a member of the Advisory Council for London Music Masters.

Nicky Carder Membership Manager, The Ivors Academy Nicky Carder is the Membership Manager at The Ivors Academy, a trade association representing 2,000 music creators across the UK and proudly presents The Ivors and The Ivors Composer Awards.

Susanna Eastburn Chief Executive, Sound and Music Susanna Eastburn took up the role of Chief Executive of Sound and Music in September 2012. This is the latest senior appointment in a varied career that has included being Director, Music at Arts Council England from 2008-2012. Her first role was in music publishing, working at Music Sales Ltd with a number of leading composers including Judith Weir, Kaija Saariaho and Esa-Pekka Salonen. At the age of 31 she was appointed as Artistic Director and Chief Executive of the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, a role she fulfilled between 2000-2004, when she was selected to be a Fellow on the inaugural year of the Clore Leadership Programme, an initiative to identify and develop leadership in the UK’s cultural sector. In May 2019, she was elected Chair of Orchestras for All, the innovative music charity which gives 11-18 year olds with complex lives the opportunity to access the life-changing experience of ensemble music-making. She is a Trustee of Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, as well as a member of The Queen’s Medal for Music Committee. In 2018 she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for Services to Music, whilst in 2017 she was awarded a Gold Badge Award by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) in recognition of her support for the songwriting and composing community. In April 2019 she was honoured to be on the Alternative Power 100 Music List. She is a keen chamber musician and plays the viola.

George Bacon Lead Relationship Manager, PPL George Bacon is Lead Relationship Manager for PPL, the UK’s collective management organisation (CMO) for performers and record companies. At PPL, he account manages a number of UK and international artists, ensuring that their royalties are accurately paid when their music is broadcast or played in public. Marshall Marcus Secretary General, European Union Youth Orchestra After more than a quarter of a century as a professional violinist with appearances in more than 60 countries, Marshall Marcus was, for a decade in London, CEO of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Head of Music at Southbank Centre and the Royal Festival Hall, overseeing one of the world’s largest arts centre music programmes.

Marshall Marcus was appointed CEO of the European Union Youth Orchestra in December 2012. He is now Secretary General of the EUYO and CEO of the International Youth Foundation. He was Founder and Chairman, and is now President, of Sistema Europe, Founder of Sistema Africa, a Director and Trustee of Sistema England, a member of Sistema Global's Advisory Board, and was for six years a member of the British Council's Arts and Creative Economy Advisory group.

Cassidy Fitzpatrick Vice President for Musician Advancement, New World Symphony Cassidy Fitzpatrick develops, implements, and evaluates the New World Symphony’s Fellowship activities, training, and educational programmes. She is primarily responsible for the areas of: community and audience engagement; diversity, equity and inclusion; and leadership and entrepreneurialism.

Ms Fitzpatrick joined NWS in 2013 as Assistant to the Dean and Community Engagement Manager and served as Director of Community Engagement from 2014 to 2018. Previously, she served as Artistic Administrator for Florida Grand Opera and as an associate in the Artistic and Development departments at Boston Lyric Opera. Prior to her career in the arts, Ms Fitzpatrick was a paralegal in the Insurance and Financial Services Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. She holds a BA in History and Music from Amherst College and an MBA from the University of Florida.

17 Chi-chi Nwanoku Founder, Artistic and Executive Director, Chineke!

Foundation An ex-sprinter, Chi-chi Nwanoku has gained a reputation as one of the finest exponents of her instrument today. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music and with Franco Petracchi in Rome, and soon found herself in demand internationally. Chi-chi is the Founder, Artistic and Executive Director of the Chineke!

Foundation, which supports, inspires and encourages Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) classical musicians working in the UK and Europe. Ultimately, the Chineke! Foundation aims to give classical BME musicians a platform on which to excel, and by such methods increase the representation of BME musicians in British and European orchestras. Chi-chi was a founder member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and was Principal double bass there for over 30 years. Chi-chi was awarded an OBE in 2017 and the MBE in 2001 for Services to Music. Chi-chi was awarded the Black British Business Awards, Person of the Year 2016 and was the recipient of the ABO Award 2017, which is awarded for ‘the most important contribution to the orchestral life of the UK’. In 2018 she was named in the Top 10 of the BBC Woman’s Hour, Women in Music Power List, and won the inaugural Commonwealth Cultural Enterprise Award for Women in the Arts at the Commonwealth Business Women’s Awards. William Norris Managing Director, Southbank Sinfonia William got involved in music from an early age, learning violin and piano, both of which he played for many years.

His true love for classical music started when Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra visited Exeter University, where he studied, on a regular basis. William studied Geography but got involved in music and there realised that working behind the scenes at an orchestra was actually a career. His proudest performing moments include his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2004 playing a Hoover, and in 2012 joining a cast of thousands for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games armed with little more than a large roll of astroturf and a Victorian street urchin costume.

Sarah Playfair Freelance casting director for opera and musical theatre For the last 22 years Sarah Playfair has been a freelance opera casting director working regularly with Garsington Opera, Birmingham Opera Company and Tête à Tête and on a project basis with many other organisations including Music Theatre Wales, LPO, the Barbican, BBCSO and the BBC. Prior to becoming self-employed she held senior positions with English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera and Glyndebourne after learning her trade as a stage manager with WNO, as a junior manager with London Contemporary Dance Theatre at The Place and with Prospect Theatre Company and then in the Casting/Planning department of ENO. Hannah Barkley Arts Administration/Deputy Company Manager, Garsington Opera Hannah Barkley started at Garsington Opera in 2018 as Deputy Company Manager and Arts Administration Assistant, managing the artistic side by working closely with production teams, principal singers, and chorus, as well as running the Alvarez Young Artist Programme. Hannah graduated from Durham University in 2013 having completed a degree in Music specialising in recorder performance and has worked in arts administration for her whole career, previously working for the Royal College of Music and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Sue Sturrock (chair) Founder, RCM Woodhouse Centre Sue Sturrock is the former Director of Communications at her alma mater, the Royal College of Music, where she established the community programme which now flourishes as RCM Sparks and founded the RCM’s Woodhouse Centre, now the Creative Careers Centre.

She is founder-director of Music Talks (founded in 2013), an organisation presenting events and courses on classical music. She is also an arts consultant with a current portfolio including strategic planning, mentoring and fundraising. After an early career as an oboist, Sue moved backstage into promoting music to a wider public. She did this as publicist, writer, editor and presenter, working for Dorling Kindersley, Longman, The Times, Rhinegold and BBC radio among many others.

Later, as Artistic Director of St Albans International Organ Festival, she worked with international soloists and ensembles including the Philharmonia, CBSO, and King’s Singers, expanding the range and reach of the festival by introducing other arts forms, establishing children’s programmes and commissioning imaginative new work.

A Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Millennial Travel Fellowship allowed her to study career development provision in conservatoires throughout Finland and the USA. She continues to mentor more than 30 young professionals in the UK and Europe, and consults and lectures worldwide. Sue is on the Advisory Council of Park Lane Group, a member of the Ionian Singers, and was President of the ISM for 2017/18.

Rachel Walters Senior Artist Manager, Vocal & Opera, Intermusica Rachel Walters was born in Cambridge and graduated with a degree in Music from Durham University in 2007. She worked for the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where her varied role culminated in appearances on the main stage. Rachel joined Askonas Holt in 2008 and worked in the Singers department there until 2016. She has written an app for iPad entitled 'Wagners Ring Cycle' for Naxos. In her spare time Rachel enjoys playing the piano and trumpet and choral singing and conducting.

We are delighted to welcome Nicola Benedetti and Laura Gardiner who will discuss their careers, the Benedetti Foundation and its mission, as well as the importance of music education for all, and opportunities for musicians starting out in their careers.

Nicola Benedetti Founder & Artistic Director, Benedetti Foundation Over the last 12 months Nicola has continued her role as a dedicated, passionate ambassador and leader in music education. She has reached over 2,000 young people through workshops, masterclasses, partnership projects, and school visits and connected with over 500 teachers, providing support in the face of mounting pressures, and encouraging best practice.

This commitment to supporting music practitioners was underlined in July 2018, when Nicola took over as President of the European String Teachers Association.

She has contributed to campaigns to save and preserve music services across the country and holds named positions in several of the UK’s most established and high-quality youth music organisations including the National Children's Orchestras, Sistema Scotland, National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, Music in Secondary Schools Trust, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and many more. Fiercely committed to music education and to developing young talent, she has formed many associations with schools, music colleges and local authorities.

As ‘Big Sister’ to Sistema Scotland, Nicola led Super String Sessions in autumn 2018, celebrating the organisation’s 10th anniversary by bringing together 500 young people from a diverse range of learning backgrounds including through Sistema Scotland, Local Authorities and private tuition.

She is credited with broadening the appeal of classical music to young and new audiences through her extensive education work and appearances at events such the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and iTunes Festival.

Nicola was awarded the Queen’s Medal for Music in 2017, the youngest ever recipient, and was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2019 New Year Honours, in recognition of her services to music.

Laura Gardiner Foundation Director, Benedetti Foundation Music has been a part of Laura’s life since she first picked up a violin aged 3. Inspired by the commitment and passion of both her and Nicky’s first teacher, Brenda Smith, she has dedicated herself to the education of the next generation of musicians and is delighted to be a part of the Benedetti Foundation team.

As Education Director, Laura manages the education activity of the Foundation, including the full-scale Benedetti Sessions, singular events and day sessions throughout the year and across the world and Nicky’s wider educational advocacy work. She works closely with Nicky on the education work the Foundation undertakes and will be the primary point of contact for education enquiries. She is always pleased to speak with anyone who wishes to get in touch.

After studying music at university and a postgraduate diploma in performance at the RNCM, Laura’s career began in the primary classroom where, as a class teacher, she witnessed firsthand the variable role music has both within a school’s curriculum and in the instrumental lesson.

As an instrumental teacher, Laura has taught privately and in schools in Lincolnshire for the past 10 years and shortly after leaving the primary classroom, 7 years ago, founded a strings training programme, the Oasby Music Group, to provide the opportunity for young string players to play chamber music together from the moment they begin to learn to play. She has been running large scale workshops for many years and regularly works with the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain.

Louise Cleverdon Relationship Manager (London Music Team), Arts Council England Louise has worked at Arts Council England since 2012 as a Relationship Manager in the London Music Team. She is a pianist, cellist and singer and studied performance and composition at the University of Huddersfield in the early 90s.

Charlotte Harding Charlotte Harding is an award-winning composer and saxophonist from East Yorkshire. She studied composition at the Royal College of Music with Mark-Anthony Turnage’. Charlotte has written works for an eclectic mix of leading soloists and ensembles, cross-art collaborations, and media. Emily Sun Violinist Emily Sun is known for her compelling and captivating interpretations and maintains an international concert schedule.

She was named the 2018 ABC Australian Young Performer of the Year and the 2016 UK Royal Over-Seas League Commonwealth Musician of the Year. As a concerto soloist, Emily has performed with all major Australian symphony orchestras, and orchestras in the US, Europe and Asia. Caterina Grewe German-Japanese pianist Caterina Grewe, born in Tokyo, has performed to great critical acclaim throughout the UK, continental Europe and Asia as a Steinway Artist. She has given recitals in venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Steinway Hall London and Hamburg, Dublin National Concert Hall, and the Rachmaninoff Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire. Anna Blackmur Anna Blackmur studied as a Royal College of Music scholar under Maciej Rakowski, completing her BMus with First Class Honours (2010) and her Masters in Performance with Distinction (2012). In 2015, Anna was appointed Section Principal Second Violin with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, having previously appeared as Assistant Concertmaster with the orchestra. She has also appeared as principal with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, principal or co-principal with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (with whom she has toured extensively, directed by Joshua Bell, Sir Neville Marriner and Murray Perahia), Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera.

Louise Goodwin Percussionist Louise Goodwin studied at the Royal College of Music, where she completed her Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours. She studied timpani with Adrian Bending and Matt Perry, and percussion with David Hockings and Alex Neal, and throughout her studies she was supported by the Bell Percussion Award.

During her last year at the RCM she was honoured to be the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Rosebowl, which she was presented with by HRH The Prince of Wales. She is now a member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

Rowan Pierce Award-winning soprano Rowan Pierce from Saltburnby-the-Sea has appeared on the concert platform throughout Europe and in South America, performing with ensembles such as the Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Gabrieli Consort, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, CBSO, Early Opera Company, Florilegium and Royal Northern Sinfonia. She made her BBC Proms debut at the Royal Albert Hall with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and her Wigmore Hall debut with the London Handel Players in 2017. Rowan was awarded the President’s Award by HRH The Prince of Wales at the RCM in 2017. She won both the Song Prize and First Prize at the inaugural Grange Festival International Singing Competition, the Van SomerenGodfrey Prize at the RCM and the first Schubert Society Singer Prize in 2014. Pierce is a Rising Star of the OAE and a Harewood Artist at the English National Opera. She made her debut for the English National Opera as Tiny in Britten’s Paul Bunyan. Laura Attridge Laura Attridge is a dynamic maker of opera and theatre with a passion for collaborative creative work, and an artistic vision which aims to balance integrity and innovation. As a writer, Laura has had poetry published in prestigious magazines and zines including The Rialto and Mslexia, and is featured in the new anthology Introduction X: The Poetry Business Book of New Poets. Her song cycles have been premiered at Glyndebourne, the RCM, the National Gallery and Bard College (New York). Laura has directed new pieces of theatre at venues including the Southwark Playhouse and Arts Theatre.

Her opera direction includes The Magic Flute (2019) and Don Giovanni (2018) for Waterperry Opera Festival and The Rape of Lucretia for Trinity Laban Conservatoire (2018). She has also been an Assistant/Staff director for companies such as Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Glyndebourne Tour, Opera Holland Park, Blackheath Halls Opera and British Youth Opera.

With First Class Honours in English Literature from Newcastle University and postgraduate training in Vocal Studies from the RCM, her love of the relationship between words and music has led to many fruitful collaborations with composers. Ruairi Glasheen Ruairi Glasheen is an award-winning percussionist, composer, presenter, film maker and educator based in London. Catherine Hare In demand as a performer, teacher and workshop leader, flautist Catherine Hare is a member of Southbank Sinfonia 2020. In addition to her orchestral work, Catherine is committed to widening access to live classical music through a series of concerts and workshops. Her chamber ensemble Campana Duo, with violinist Emma Purslow, specialises in accessible performance and was a Wigmore Hall Chamber Tots ensemble for the 18/19 season. They are delighted to be musicians on the prestigious Live Music Now scheme, regularly performing to a diverse range of people that rarely, if ever, have the opportunity to experience live music.

Catherine has performed in the West End, with the National Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra as part of their Student Pathway Scheme, and at several UK theatres as a deputy band member for the Wicked UK tour. She has performed solo and chamber recitals across London and South Wales, as a guest with acclaimed chamber ensemble Trio Apaches, and on baroque flute with Ex Cathedra.

Catherine graduated from the Master of Performance course at the Royal College of Music with Distinction in 2018, following an undergraduate degree at the same institution. 33 Lowri Thomas Lowri Thomas is a freelance violist based in Cardiff. She was born and raised in Alltwen, Wales and studied her undergraduate at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama graduating with First Class Honours. She went on to study postgraduate with Jonathan Barritt at the RCM as an Irene Hanson Scholar, graduating with Distinction. Whilst studying she won the RCM Viola Competition and received both the RWCMD Wolfson Foundation Fund Award and Cardiff Violins Strings Prize.

After graduating from the RCM, Lowri successfully auditioned for the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Foyle Future Firsts Scheme and began trials as No 3 Viola with orchestras including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Welsh National Opera. As a freelance musician, Lowri regularly performs with orchestras such as the BBCSO, London Chamber Orchestra and Sinfonia Cymru. She enjoys touring on shows around the UK and Ireland with artists including Sophie Ellis-Bextor and for live-inconcert shows including Star Wars, Titanic and Game of Thrones. As a chamber musician, Lowri is a member of both Live Music Now and Music in Hospitals and Care with her duo ‘String Sisters’ and viola, flute and harp group ‘Vesta Trio’. Throughout her studies and freelance career, Lowri has been generously supported by Help Musicians UK, the Royal Society of Musicians, Arts Council Wales, Wales Arts Review, Kathleen Trust, Ryan Davies Memorial Trust, James Pantyfedwen Foundation, Denne Gilkes Memorial Fund and Craxton Memorial Trust.

Emma Purslow Violinist Emma Purslow is a sought-after performer, teacher, educator and workshop leader working both in London and throughout the UK. In addition to a busy solo, chamber, and freelance orchestral career she works closely with the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Education and Community Programme, as well as the chamber music organisation Pro Corda. As part of the Campana Duo, she is part of both the Live Music Now and Wigmore Hall Chamber Tots performance and outreach schemes. She is a member of the Chilean band Quimantu, and works closely with them creating opportunities for people of all cultures to express themselves through music.

GRADUATE INSIGHTS CAREERS BEYOND PRINCIPAL STUDY Thursday 25 June 2020, 1pm

Have you ever considered a career beyond your principal study? Wondering how you can transfer your skills into other fields? These graduates will discuss how they have diversified their portfolio away from their principal study.

Isaac McCullough Musical Director Isaac McCullough trained at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester and graduated from The Royal College of Music, London in 2015 where he studied bassoon and piano. He then made a slight change of direction into Musical Direction of Musical Theatre and is currently Assistant Musical Director of Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre.

Prior to that he worked on the Miss Saigon and Sunset Boulevard UK/International tours as well as playing regularly on Les Misérables both in the West End and on tour. Other notable credits include, Musical Director/Arranger for ITV’s 2017 Royal Ascot TV advertising campaign; Musical Director for Working the musical, Southwark Playhouse (UK premiere and Original London cast recording); Assistant MD for Thursford Christmas Spectacular; and Associate MD for Dessa Rose, Trafalgar Studios (European premiere).

Jenni Parkinson Founder, Soundcastle Jenni began her career as a creative music facilitator, percussionist and performer after graduating from the RCM in 2006. She then went on to complete a Masters in creative music leadership at the Guildhall School in 2011. Jenni has worked as a music facilitator in a range of settings, both within education and the community, and has worked for organisations such as Drake Music, Take Art, Create, Live Music Now, the Amber Trust and Hampton Court Palace. In 2011 Jenni founded Soundcastle, a not-for-profit organisation that works to enhance wellbeing and connectedness through creative musicmaking. Soundcastle now has branches in London, Bristol and Sussex, where they run projects in community settings and deliver coaching and training.

35 Jeremy Rayment Corporate Financier, Brebners Jeremy Rayment is a commercially experienced corporate financier and business advisor at Brebners. Originally a classical trained musician, Jeremy qualified as a chartered accountant in 1990 and has enjoyed some notable success within the media sector, although his advisory experience spans across numerous sectors and business models. Jeremy studied Horn at the Royal College of Music with Julian Baker, and was the winner of the Douglas Moore Horn Prize in his final year.

Patrick McEntee Tour and Stage Manager, Chamber Orchestra of Europe Patrick McEntee joined the Chamber Orchestra of Europe as their Tour and Stage Manager in April 2017 and is responsible for making life on the road and stage as comfortable as possible, allowing the musicians to focus on making world-class music together. Patrick previously worked for arts organisations including the John Wilson Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Opera Holland Park and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. He studied viola at Birmingham Conservatoire and the RCM, graduating in 2013 with a Master’s degree in performance.

Theresa Yu Chief of Staff, Stint Theresa works as the Chief of Staff at Stint, a start-up mobilising a flexible workforce of university students to efficiently staff high street businesses and restaurants. At Stint, she primarily works on investor relations, strategic business initiatives, and budget and operations management. Prior to joining Stint, Theresa worked in M&A and Strategic Advisory as an Analyst in the Consumer, Retail & Leisure team at Rothschild & Co. Theresa studied piano with Andrew Ball as a Scholar at the RCM, graduating with a First Class BMus in 2018.

David Zucchi Creative Careers Centre Administrator, RCM Freelance saxophonist London-based Canadian saxophonist David Zucchi enjoys a varied career as a performer of classical, contemporary, experimental, and jazz music, collaborating regularly across the UK, Europe, and Canada. Recent appearances include the Purcell Room, St John’s Smith Square, Cadogan Hall, Verbier Festival (Switzerland), Val de Cambra Festival (Portugal), the Glenn Gould Studio, and the Canadian High Commission in London. David was born in London, and grew up in Toronto, Canada. He is a graduate of the RCM's Master’s and Artist Diploma programme, where he studied with Kyle Horch and Martin Robertson (jazz) as an Edward and Helen Hague Scholar. Previously, David attended the University of Toronto Faculty of Music, where he studied saxophone with Wallace Halladay and composition with Alexander Rapoport. Upon graduating, he was awarded the William and Phyllis Waters Graduating Award, the Faculty's top graduating prize. Additional awards include the David and Marcia Beach Award, the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Scholarship, and the Royal College of Music’s Woodwind Ensemble Prize. In 2016, David was the first saxophonist to be awarded the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Award.
