It’s my pleasure to present our spring Events Guide, containing details of the many inspiring festivals, concerts, talks, competitions and masterclasses taking place here at the Royal College of Music, across London and further afield.
Chamber music is central to this term, and we are delighted to present two RCM Chamber Orchestra collaborations: Douglas Boyd conducts music by Haydn and Strauss alongside Zimmermann’s virtuosic Oboe Concerto with Concerto Competition winner Kara Battley; and our annual side-by-side with musicians from the Chamber Orchestra of Europe features works by Farrenc and Beethoven.
Our Chamber Festival, The Sound of Music, takes place in February and includes performances, pop-ups and an electronic installation. The Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective collaborates with students in a richly varied programme, and RCM alumnus Wayne Marshall returns to direct RCM musicians in numbers by Rodgers & Hammerstein, in A Grand Night for Singing.
Three internationally renowned conductors make their debuts with College orchestras. Lawrence Renes conducts works by John Adams and Bruckner; Principal Conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra Anna-Maria Helsing directs music by Ravel and Brahms; and join us in a transformed Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall as Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser leads Disco Inferno, an electrifying concert of disco and soul music reimagined for orchestra – complete with disco ball.
Opera fans are spoilt for choice with Stephen Barlow’s new production of Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, and the RCM Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir’s concert performance of Handel’s Acis and Galatea.
Other highlights include the RCM Jazz Orchestra directed by Georgina Jackson; the RCM Festival of Conducting; our 20th Keyboard Festival; and Great Exhibitionists, our student-curated series encouraging multidisciplinary creative collaborations. And our vibrant Junior Department performances include orchestral, contemporary and chamber music across the term.
Our extensive masterclass programme includes a residency from Pedro Díaz and visits from Stefan Dohr, Francesca Dego, Barry Douglas and Sir Stephen Hough. And please mark Sunday 17 May in your diary for the RCM Symphony Orchestra at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, when Kahchun Wong conducts Mahler’s Fifth Symphony.
Thank you for joining us and supporting our students here at the Royal College of Music; we look forward to welcoming you.

Piano Concerto no 13 in C major K415
Piano Concerto no 14 in E flat major K449
Hear four Classical concertos in their intended form, performed on the type of piano that Mozart himself would have used, the College’s Anton Walter fortepiano copy made by Paul McNulty. This historical piano design from the late 18th century differs from the instrument we know today, with its lighter build, reduced string tension and distinctive timbres. Performing with these early keyboardists is a string quartet, a fitting accompaniment for these delicate concertos.
