LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Rowland Hall Families and Friends,

You hold in your hands Rowland Hall’s very first Impact Report, the newest addition to our school’s publication lineup and a companion to Only at Rowland Hall, released to our community in June.* Both publications, which beginning this year take the place of our Annual Report, are designed to pay tribute to our school community, share the progress being made around our strategic priorities, and recognize the many achievements of the preceding school year.

In our Impact Report, we recognize the generosity of all who believe in Rowland Hall’s vision to transform education and who support this work by making financial gifts to the school. During the 2022–2023 school year, your incredible contributions made it clear that you are inspired by our bold, empowering, and momentous vision:

• 1,066 people gave to Rowland Hall this year.

• Our Annual Fund remained strong, raising over $1 million, with contributions from 100 percent of board members and 99 percent of faculty and staff.

• We celebrated an Auction record, netting $640,000 at our beloved biennial event.

• We received the largest gift in school history, moving us closer to our goal to unite the Rowland Hall community on one campus.

• Our alumni, with graduation years spanning 1953 to 2023, gave back to the school that shaped them, contributing $980,384 in total.

4 2022–2023
Welcome // WELCOME

This truly is a remarkable and inspirational community, and it is because of the commitment of each one of you that we have so much to celebrate. I thank you for contributing to Rowland Hall this year, and I hope you share my excitement for all that comes from your generosity.

With gratitude,

ROWLAND HALL IMPACT REPORT 5

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

This was a strong year for Rowland Hall. Guided by our vision and strategic priorities, the school made great strides to enhance the student experience. For example, Rowland Hall added a TREC (Technology, Robotics, Engineering, and Coding) Lab at the McCarthey Campus, enabling our young learners to more meaningfully engage with math and science. We also added more than 20 electives across the middle and upper school divisions, offering our students more agency in their education, and hired two additional counselors as well as a learning specialist, providing our students with enhanced academic and social-emotional support.

Enthusiasm for Rowland Hall’s progress manifested itself in numerous ways:

• Enrollment was the highest in the school’s 156-year history.

• Robust school spirit was evident at the Back to School Bash and on the sports sidelines.

• Fundraising this year was the most successful in school history, with over $18.3 million raised in gifts and pledges, including the largest single gift in school history. The biennial Auction brought 310 members of the community together for a 1980s-themed celebration that broke the alltime fundraising record for the gala, and which included $167,000 raised for financial aid. The record-breaking development year culminated with the first-ever all-donor celebration to honor the culture of philanthropy created by the Annual Fund.

• Recruitment efforts yielded some of the most sought-after candidates in nationwide searches for faculty, administrators, and staff.

// WELCOME 6 2022–2023

The Board of Trustees remains focused on the capital campaign to build the new middle and upper school facilities on the Richard R. Steiner Campus in time for the 2026–2027 school year. Schematic design is nearly complete. The architects, builder, and board’s Building Committee are collaborating to ensure a sustainable campus worthy of Rowland Hall’s ambitious vision. Rowland Hall’s financial foundation is sound and well-positioned to achieve our goals. With the generous support of donors, the board hopes and expects to enter the public phase of the capital campaign in the 2023–2024 school year.

It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your board chair the past three years. As the board’s leadership transitions to incoming Board Chair Sarah Lehman, the near- and long-term future of Rowland Hall is exciting and in excellent hands.

Your Generosity, Your Impact

PHILANTHROPIC GIFTS AND STEM

STEM subjects such as computer science and robotics foster creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in students—skills that will help them become the leaders of tomorrow. With newly adopted strategic priorities established in 2022, and thanks to the generosity of donors who support them, Rowland Hall has prioritized investing in and expanding our offerings in these subjects. While it is costly to add new courses to our program, the ongoing support of Rowland Hall’s generous donors has allowed us to offer these innovative and meaningful learning opportunities to students.

In the 2022–2023 school year, Rowland Hall used philanthropic gifts to invest in computer science, expanding the program’s reach in several ways, including creating a new Lower School computer science specialty class. In the program’s first year, second through fifth graders wrote more than 103,000 lines of code for interactive projects such as side-scrolling jumping games, interactive fortune-telling devices created with micro:bits (pocket-sized computers), and rockets designed with 3D modeling software.

The Lower School computer science specialty is not only building excitement for computer science, but is also lowering the age at which students first encounter the subject. Longtime Upper School computer science teacher Ben Smith ’89 (who this year also became chair of the computer science and robotics program) sees firsthand how earlier STEM opportunities deepen studies at the middle and upper school levels. “Because of opportunities students have to accelerate their computing and robotics, as well as to solve more problems in maker classes, students are more engaged and prepared to do bigger things,” he said.

This year, more students than ever entered the Upper School hungry for new computer science challenges, and

with increased investments in the subject, teachers have been able to respond with even more authentic learning opportunities that build the skills these students need in a dynamic world.

“Now, I think about bigger problem-solving, collaborative projects, and real-world connections to the community,” said Ben. These connections include computer science–related internships and collaborative community projects that apply classroom learning to local, national, and global problems; for example, this year, three Rowland Hall teams were finalists in the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute High School Utah Entrepreneur Challenge for their apps designed to solve real-world problems. Program expansion is also making room for deeper discussions around the impact of technology (such as the hot topics of privacy, security, and AI), the human bias behind technology, and the importance of bringing more voices to the table to ensure equity.

Recent STEM Investments

• Lower School computer science specialty, with curriculum additions of computer science, coding, design thinking, engineering, and robotics

• McCarthey Campus TREC Lab, supported by funds raised through annual giving

• Middle School courses: Engineering, Game Design, Inventing to Learn, Robotics, Robotics FIRST LEGO League

• Upper School courses: Advanced Research Biology, Advanced Research Chemistry, AP Statistics, Biotechnology, Calculus, Entrepreneurship, Integrated Engineering I & II, Integrated Math II & III, Machine Learning (Independent Study), Physics II, Python Programming, Vertebrate Physiology

• Lincoln Street Campus Technology Hub additions

• Faculty trained to support STEM at a variety of developmental levels

8 2022–2023
// YOUR GENEROSITY, YOUR IMPACT

“A lot of computer science is a much larger conversation around the implications, impact, and opportunities that technology affords. So much of what we will be doing in the future is in tandem with the developments that happen in the world of tech,” said Ben. “Whether you become a technologist isn’t important. Rather, it’s about understanding impacts and being flexible and reactive to what occurs.”

And that’s why it’s so essential that schools build both the hard and the interpersonal skills students will need to lead conversations, no matter what lies ahead. It’s evident from computer science programs across all divisions that Rowland Hall’s strong culture of philanthropy has empowered us to increase our impact on students.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF ROWLAND HALL STEM

Rowland Hall’s newest state-of-the-art facilities, to be built on the Richard R. Steiner Campus, will further modernize STEM learning to better meet the needs of today’s students. New campus plans include dedicated STEM spaces: a Center for Science, Engineering, and Research, which will feature collaborative science classrooms and student-led research areas, and a Center for Design and Creativity, which will feature maker workshops and a robotics hub. These spaces will support deep learning, enabling students to experience an entirely new level of real-world connections and impact, and provide enhanced opportunities for long-term projects both in and out of the classroom.

ROWLAND HALL IMPACT REPORT 9

IN THEIR WORDS

Upper School students reflect on the impact of Rowland Hall’s computer science and robotics program in their lives.

Ane Hernandez CLASS OF 2023

“Rowland Hall’s program—defined by Ben Smith’s comprehensible teaching style and allyship with marginalized tech communities—has given me a strong foundation in computer science that has prepared me for college. Thanks to Mr. Smith’s constant support of me as a student and as a minority in tech, I felt encouraged to continue taking computer science classes throughout high school and eventually major in computer science.”

Max Jansen CLASS OF 2024

“Rowland Hall’s computer science program is growing with the larger computer science field to make sure students are able to perform in today’s world.”

10 2022–2023 // YOUR GENEROSITY, YOUR IMPACT

Bea Wall CLASS OF 2024

“Computer science classes are some of the most relevant classes I’ve taken. The really cool and unique part about these classes is that you can apply the skills to whatever you’re doing in the future.”

Omar Alsolaiman CLASS OF 2024

“Rowland Hall’s robotics program is about more than building the robot—it’s also about presenting, creating portfolios, giving back to your community, fundraising, and other logistics. It’s like running a business. Having the opportunity to be part of and lead a team that’s into the same things I am, and to build all kinds of skills across the board, makes a big difference.”

Malone Scholars Program Helps Make Exceptional Education a Reality

In 1997, media executive John C. Malone and his family established The Malone Family Foundation to improve access to quality education through scholarship. The foundation’s Malone Scholars Program provides scholarship endowments to highly esteemed independent schools across the country, with a mission to provide a challenging education to highly capable students who display the keen desire and motivation to learn, yet lack the resources to fund an independent school education.

Between 2000 and 2013, the Malone Family Foundation selected 50 independent schools to receive its endowments, with the goal to select a top school in each state. The selection process was rigorous. The foundation researched independent schools across the country and handpicked applicants based on their academic caliber; quality of staff; accommodations for students who seek further academic challenges; advanced courses; financial stability and strength; strong commitment to financial aid; economically, culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse population; and ability to provide attention to individual students’ needs, interests, and talents.

In 2011, Rowland Hall received the incredible news that it had been invited into the network of Malone Schools, an

opportunity former Head of School Alan Sparrow called “a great honor.” This honor came with a $2 million endowment to fund educational opportunities for students who show enthusiasm and drive for academic excellence and whose families demonstrate financial need. The endowed funds from the Malone Family Foundation allow Rowland Hall to provide scholarships to highly capable and motivated students annually, and once a student earns a Malone Scholarship, it follows them through their Rowland Hall career. For the 2022–2023 school year, Rowland Hall had seven Malone scholars, and since 2011, these funds have helped 14 students attend the school.

In June 2023, the Malone Family Foundation gave Rowland Hall an additional $500,000 to supplement the Malone Scholarship endowment. This tremendous gift will allow the school to add at least one additional Malone Scholar in future years.

ROWLAND HALL IMPACT REPORT 15

IN THEIR WORDS

Malone Scholars reflect on how the scholarship impacted their student experiences.

Often, our Malone Scholars are some of the greatest leaders at the school, because recipients of this esteemed scholarship have a deep understanding of the value of their education. They take pride in their accomplishments and strive to excel in all areas of their Rowland Hall lives. They take nothing for granted, and that mindset elevates them and everyone around them.

Sophia Cutrubus ’18

Upper School dance teacher

Sophia Cutrubus ’18 said her Malone Scholarship altered her life. “I understood that I was being offered an experience that would change my trajectory,” she reflected. “It’s difficult to explain the extent to which this school has provided me the tools and connections to lead a life full of joy and resilience.” These tools and connections included opportunities to meet deep thinkers who saw themselves as vital members of a global community, chances to hone her own thinking and voice, invitations to examine complex views of the past and reckon with implications of various narratives, and moments to connect scientific theories with lab findings and real-world observations. “I experienced a sense of responsibility for my learning,” said Sophia. “The Malone Scholarship allowed me to see myself in fuller color. It provided access to a community that was willing to hold space for me as I rebelled, explored, and made mistakes. And at every turn, I was met with friends and mentors that would continue to support me throughout my life.”

16 2022–2023
// CELEBRATING LEADERSHIP DONORS

Jada Crockett ’23

Recent graduate Jada Crockett ’23 said the Malone Scholarship transformed her life. “The Malone Scholarship gave me the opportunity to receive an outstanding education at Rowland Hall,” she shared. “As a student-athlete, every teacher I had was very supportive and accommodating to my busy schedule, and I couldn’t have gotten through my academic career without every single one of them. My athletic career at Rowland Hall has been very memorable for me: winning state in soccer and track, breaking school and state records, and getting to bond with my teammates.” Jada will begin attending California State University, Fresno in the 2023–2024 school year, where she will also run track.

Ryan Aguilar ’23

For Ryan Aguilar ’23, the Malone Scholarship had an impact beyond the classroom and extracurricular activities.

“The Malone Scholarship allowed me to grow in a safer environment. I came out as trans in eighth grade, and in public school people who identify differently are often bullied and harassed,” he said. “I was really lucky to meet people at Rowland Hall who both accepted me and helped me find ways to fight for and support others like me.” Ryan was an integral part of his class: co-captain of the volleyball team, with Academic All-Region and All-State honors, and an academic leader in science who was part of the only group of high schoolers to present at the Materials Research Society conference in San Francisco in 2023, an opportunity Ryan believes he wouldn’t have had in public school. Ryan will attend the University of Virginia beginning in 2023–2024 and plans to major in chemistry and minor in physics.

ROWLAND HALL IMPACT REPORT 17

This year, Rowland Hall parents, caregivers, grandparents, alumni parents, friends, faculty members, and staff came together to go above and beyond for another amazing year of annual giving at Rowland Hall. Gifts of all sizes totaling $1,049,338 helped support Rowland Hall students and teachers as they participated in the arts, athletics, and professional development for faculty and staff, and provided other student support across all campuses. The generosity of 842 donors helped students at Rowland Hall engage in learning opportunities that are helping them develop into the people the world needs.

A special thank you to Annual Fund Chair Sarah Campsen and the following volunteers who dedicated their time to raise funds that sustain the school’s mission.

$640,000

TOTAL RAISED—A NEW AUCTION RECORD

$167,000 Given in the Paddle Raise

310 Guests in Attendance

$55,675 Given by 11 Sponsors

41 VOLUNTEERS HELPED PLAN, SECURE AUCTION ITEMS, MAIL INVITATIONS, AND SET UP THE EVENT

“A record-breaking year” does not even begin to fully encapsulate the tremendous success of this year’s Auction, Back for the Future. Not only did we raise more than any other Auction in the event’s 42-year history at Rowland Hall, the feeling of community and school spirit generated by the event was palpable. Back for the Future was made possible through the tireless work of dozens of volunteers and Rowland Hall staff over nearly a year of planning. We extend our deepest gratitude to Auction Co-Chairs Brittany Yeates and Mekensy Overholt for their leadership and countless hours of dedication to this fundraising event.

Back for the Future was an ’80s prom–themed gala with a wide variety of donated items and experiences as well as live music from ’80s cover band The Spazmatics. Those in attendance were impressed with everything about the event, from the decor, food, and music to the overwhelming sense of community—after all, the magic of our biennial Auction is how it brings together so many from our Rowland Hall community, from those in attendance to those who participate through donations or in the online silent auction in the week leading up to the event.

This year, the record-breaking $640,000 raised will support implementation of the school’s strategic priorities, making possible our new vision for education—one of extraordinary teaching and learning that reimagines what the future looks like for our students and the world.

We are excited to carry the spirit of Back for the Future into our work moving forward, and to celebrate the record-breaking funds that will help the school continue to build on its legacy and positively impact generations to come.

Thank you to all who donated so generously and made this year’s Auction a tremendous success.

ROWLAND HALL IMPACT REPORT 33

Over the past year, the Rowland Hall community has been inspired by the school’s new strategic priorities and vision of developing people the world needs. This inspiration has built a sense of urgency and excitement at the school. And in our community of donors and supporters, the newfound energy resulted in a record year of fundraising for Rowland Hall’s capital campaign, The World Awaits: The Campaign for Rowland Hall.

Last spring, the school’s new vision of transformative education and impact motivated the Board of Trustees to reimagine two critical considerations for the school. First, the board approved a plan to build a new Middle School and Upper School, complete with athletic facilities, STEM spaces, and a performing arts center, on the Richard R. Steiner Campus, and set a bold timeline for opening the new facility in 2026. Given the new scope and schedule of the campus plans, the board also relaunched the school’s capital campaign with a new name and new fundraising goal of $45 million. Since that time, The World Awaits has engaged and inspired the philanthropic community of Rowland Hall, including many new donors and supporters who are energized by and invested in the school’s plans for the future.

The World Awaits campaign has raised over $17 million since the spring of 2022. This includes several new leadership gifts of seven figures and above (including the largest gift in the history of the school) and numerous six-figure gifts and pledges. Combined with the generosity seen in previous years, the school has raised $29.1 million in total for the capital campaign and campus build.

Our ability to open the new campus in 2026 is ultimately dependent on the continued philanthropic support of our Rowland Hall community. We are confident that the strength of our fundraising efforts will allow our campus construction timeline to stay on track, and preliminary plans are to break ground in the next year.

We are thankful for all the donors who have stretched their giving and prioritized Rowland Hall in their philanthropy, putting the school and the capital campaign in this remarkable current position. We look forward to including more donors in this transformative moment of impact for Rowland Hall, joining our efforts to unite the school on one campus, unlock the immense potential of our program and our students, and create a model for what is possible in education.

Now is the time … because The World Awaits.

To help us bring this plan to life, please contact Robyn Jensen, director of institutional advancement, at robynjensen@rowlandhall.org or 801-924-2961.

Alumni Scholarship Fund

This year, Rowland Hall graduates from 1953 through 2023 showed up in remarkable ways. From participating in our alumni gatherings and events to donating to the Alumni Scholarship Fund, over 250 alumni engaged with their alma mater in 2022–2023.

Our Alumni Scholarship Fund, which directly provides scholarship to students who might not otherwise be able to attend the school, remains strong. To date, $400,620 has been raised by Rowland Hall alumni to provide students with the same educational experience they themselves received. The 2023 Alumni Day of Giving saw over 120 alumni give back to support the current alumni scholarship recipients. It was a day full of school spirit, both on alumni social media channels and on campus, as the Alumni Executive Board and class liaisons came together to reach out to their classmates to request support.

We are excited to see our alumni community grow in the years to come as we launch new efforts to help alumni stay engaged with Rowland Hall. We extend a huge thank you to everyone who gave back this year, and we look forward to your continued support.

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Financial support from Rowland Hall alumni enriches the student experience. We recognize that giving to your alma mater is a choice, and we thank you for supporting Rowland Hall.
