THANK YOU

Why Giving Matters

Philanthropic support at all levels helps create the Rowland Hall experience: The programs. The people. The future.

Welcome

LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Rowland Hall Families and Friends,

The 2023–2024 school year marked a pivotal moment in the rollout of our school’s extraordinary vision Developing People the World Needs. With the groundbreaking of the Richard R. Steiner Campus—future home of our new Middle School, Upper School, athletic complex, and performing arts center—and the kickoff of the community phase of our capital campaign, we are on the cusp of a new chapter in Rowland Hall’s history.

If our community’s enthusiasm is any indication (more than 400 of you showed up for the groundbreaking alone), this chapter is inspiring and exciting. You believe in our future, and your financial support of Rowland Hall shows your confidence in our vision.

During the 2023–2024 school year:

• 923 people gave to Rowland Hall.

• 27 families contributed six- or seven-figure gifts to the capital campaign.

• Our Annual Fund raised $930,210, with contributions from 100% of board members, 99% of faculty and staff, and 61% of parents.

• The school’s alumni gave back with gifts totaling $656,414.

• Legions of parents and caregivers volunteered their time to support the school community.

On behalf of the entire Rowland Hall leadership team and Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your generous support. Because of you, we’re well on our way to fulfilling our goal of building an extraordinary learning environment that better meets today’s students’ needs, and we’re continuing to provide a transformative education that prepares students to make an impact and thrive in today’s world. Shaping the future of education is made possible only with your collective buy-in, and I’m thankful to you all for taking part in this important work.

With gratitude,

We invite you to read about this year’s exciting achievements and programming in Only at Rowland Hall and Fine Print, our online magazine.

JENNIFER PRICE-WALLIN NAMED CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Rowland Hall is thrilled to announce the Board of Trustees has named Jennifer Price-Wallin chair of the board, effective August 12, 2024.

This change in board leadership follows Sarah Lehman’s decision to resign as chair to move to California, where her youngest son is attending school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sarah for her years of service, and especially for her work around our strategic priorities and capital campaign. Sarah will continue to be a strong advocate and ambassador for the school, and we wish her and her family the very best.

Jennifer has assumed leadership of the board through the end of Sarah’s term (June 30, 2026). As a previous Rowland Hall board chair (2016–2020) and longtime trustee, Jennifer is an ideal successor to Sarah, bringing to the role a breadth of professional experience as well as deep understanding of our board, school, community, and vision for what’s possible in education. We are grateful to Jennifer for stepping into this role, and confident in and excited about her ability to steadfastly and seamlessly lead Rowland Hall at this pivotal moment.

A LEGACY OF IMPACT: THE MEREDITH MCMANUS ’59 SCHOLARSHIP

It isn’t everyday that you meet an elementary school teacher with the nickname “Punch,” but that was the name Mary Edith Hill McManus used her entire life.

“Her sister was nicknamed ‘Kick,’” recalled her son, Parker “Hugh” McManus. “I’m not 100% clear how the nickname originated, but it sounds like there was a scuffle at some point.”

From 1954 to 1968, Punch was a beloved educator and administrator at Rowland Hall. She taught second grade, third grade, and seventh- and eighth-grade English and reading—and her reputation was nothing like her tough-sounding nickname. She was loved by her students, even when she kept them on their toes. One Lower School student is quoted in the 1959 yearbook as saying, “Life as a student of Mrs. McManus is the most wonderful thing that could possibly happen.”

In 1964, Mrs. McManus earned a new role at Rowland Hall: head of the Lower School. For the next four years, while leading the division, she helped the community see the school as a united whole. As her students ascended grades, she remained a safe place for her former students—her reading room was an ever-popular hideaway for high schoolers. She even chaperoned a weeklong senior girls bus trip to San Francisco, where 17 vivacious girls discovered art museums, cable cars, plays, the California surf, concerts, French sailors, and the joy of seeing their dinner cooked alive on the wharf.

Mary “Punch” McManus gave herself fully to the Rowland Hall community. And the school reciprocated by admitting her elementary school-aged daughter, Meredith.

Nothing held her back. She wasn’t bashful, that’s for sure. I think a lot of that came from Rowland Hall.

Hugh McManus vividly remembers looking out the kitchen window and seeing his sister, Meredith, walking home with her friends from Rowland Hall in their school uniforms. The younger girls wore plaid jumpers with white Peter Pan collars, while the older girls wore white nursing dresses and black cardigans.

Each day, Meredith sat down and did her homework and studied. “Meredith was a good student,” Hugh recalled, “and Rowland Hall was a special school—a private school where you had to apply and be accepted. Meredith was admitted because our mom taught there. We couldn’t have afforded it otherwise. But she applied herself to her schooling, she did well, and she really enjoyed it.”

Meredith was a driven young woman who embraced life’s trials with tenacity, determined to discover and develop her strengths. She was more than a bookworm—she was a wellrounded young woman who took full advantage of the many opportunities Rowland Hall offered. Deeply involved in the school community, she served as photographer, editor, and artist for the yearbook; a member of the choir, French Club, and Latin Club; and vice president of the Athletic Association. It seems only fitting that Meredith’s senior quote was from an English poet, Robert Browning: “I count life just a stuff to try the soul's strength on.” She graduated from the school in 1959.

“I think the education Rowland Hall gave her created the drive that made her very successful in life. She went to Smith College and then finished her education at the University of Utah,” Hugh said. “After she graduated, she went into the business world and had a career as the CEO of a number of different stock investment companies all over the world. She did well in an industry where there were few women. Nothing held her back. She wasn’t bashful, that’s for sure. I think a lot of that came from Rowland Hall.”

Meredith and her mother were very similar in many respects. They were passionate about their work, lovers of the outdoors, and trailblazing women in their fields. When Punch and her husband separated, she moved to the mountains of Gunnison, Colorado, rode horses, collected arrowheads (before it became illegal), and continued her education career as an English teacher with, as Hugh shared, the “highest-paying teaching job she could get.” She had a fierce independence to her that Meredith witnessed, and later echoed.

After a successful career in business and great financial success, Meredith retired with her husband and dog in Fruita, Colorado. She was what her brother called an “outside person.” She rode horses, skied, played tennis, and traveled. She also enjoyed playing cards and going out to the opera. And she felt strongly about giving back.

From 1995 until her death in 2023, Meredith made a point each year to contribute some of her financial success back to Rowland Hall, where she got her start. To her, Rowland Hall was more than a school and more than an education—it was an opportunity to thrive, and one she wouldn’t have received if not for her mother’s prolific career.

Mary in 1961

In 2024, the school received a call that Meredith had left $750,000 to Rowland Hall in her will. She planned the gift as a way to give back to the place and people that had meant so much to her. Her wish was for a scholarship in her name to be created for children of Rowland Hall teachers so others like her could attend the school. In 2024–2025, the first Meredith McManus Scholarship will be awarded to a child of a current faculty member.

“My mother would have been very proud of Meredith,” Hugh reflected. And this fall, as a student and parent begin a new school year, Hugh imagines, “I think Meredith will look down and smile.”

Each year, the Rowland Hall community comes together in support of the Annual Fund campaign, a yearly fundraising effort that enhances programs across all divisions and touches every student’s experience. A robust Annual Fund gives our administration the ability to say yes to educators who request resources and materials that will help them go above and beyond for their students. This year, 716 donors participated in annual giving, contributing $930,210. Each gift—both small and large—made a true impact in creating meaningful opportunities for students to explore their potential and thrive at Rowland Hall.

Many thanks to Annual Fund Chair for the Board of Trustees Sarah Campsen, and the following volunteers who graciously dedicated their time in support of the Annual Fund.

It’s happening!

The World Awaits Campaign for Rowland Hall is the largest capital campaign in the history of the school. Thanks to the generosity of the Rowland Hall community, the campaign has raised $35.7 million—79% of the total fundraising goal of $45 million. Of this total, $24 million was raised over the past two years.

The extraordinary momentum of the campaign has led to some incredible milestones this year. In April, Rowland Hall officially broke ground on the Richard R. Steiner Campus, with plans to open a new Middle School and Upper School, complete with athletic facilities, STEM spaces, and a performing arts center, in time for the 2026–2027 school year.

Groundbreaking also marked the launch of the community phase of the capital campaign. The school hosted several events this past spring to share exciting plans for the future of the school and to showcase designs and renderings for the new campus. There are more opportunities planned for the 2024–2025 school year as we invite the greater Rowland Hall community to join us in this transformative moment for the school (see sidebar).

As we enter the community phase of our capital campaign, we are invigorated by the tremendous progress made so far, with just $9.3 million left to reach our ambitious goal. This milestone is a testament to the dedication and generosity of our supporters, who have stretched their contributions and prioritized Rowland Hall in their giving. Now, more than ever, we need the collective effort of our entire community to push us across the finish line. Your contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant impact. Together, we can achieve something extraordinary, unlocking the immense potential of our program and our students and creating a model for what’s possible in education.

Join us in this final stretch and be a part of this transformative moment for Rowland Hall.

Alumni Scholarship Fund

This year, Rowland Hall graduates from 1936 through 2023 showed up for our community in profound ways. From donating to the Alumni Scholarship Fund to participating in alumni gatherings, over 300 alumni engaged with their alma mater this year.

Our Alumni Scholarship Fund, which directly provides scholarships for students who might not otherwise be able to attend the school, remains strong. To date, $473,228 has been raised by Rowland Hall alumni to provide students with the same educational experience they received. The 2024 Alumni Day of Giving saw over 140 donors give back to support the current Alumni Scholarship recipients, and the Alumni Executive Board came together to reach out to their classmates. Along with their gifts, alumni donors were asked to recognize faculty and staff who made an impact on their lives. A beautiful digital mosaic was created with the dozens of recognitions that poured in. It was a day full of community pride.

We are excited to see our diverse alumni community grow each and every year as we continue to launch new efforts to keep our graduates engaged. Thank you to everyone who gave back this year. We look forward to your continued support.

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Financial support from Rowland Hall alumni enriches the student experience. We recognize that giving to your alma mater is a choice, and we thank you for supporting Rowland Hall.

ROWLAND HALL BIENNIAL AUCTION

Rowland Hall is excited to announce that Deanna and Jeff Miller ’98 have enthusiastically agreed to chair the school’s biennial Auction, to be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025.

“We are thrilled to chair the Rowland Hall Auction, because it offers a unique opportunity to bring our community together in support of our school's mission and future,” said the couple. “This event not only celebrates our collective achievements but also paves the way for continued excellence and innovation in education.”

Stay tuned for announcements in the coming months regarding the Auction theme and ways to support this allschool fundraising effort.
