Josie with Land Girls Betty and Doris in Bamboozle’s production, Down to Earth

Welcome Thank you for joining us this evening at Bamboozle’s glittering Putting on the Ritz Gala dinner and charity auction. Your contributions tonight raise vital funds so that we can continue our life-changing work with children and young people who have learning disabilities and their families. We hope you have a wonderful time. Many of the children we work with are unable to speak for themselves. They can’t express themselves in ways that most of us understand. But they do have things to say. What we want to do at Bamboozle is to unlock the doors to a world where they can find their own voice - a voice which is listened to with care and attention. Too often in our society, these children and their families are not heard; they are left out and made to feel that they don’t belong. We need to put that right. That is why we are all here this evening. With your help we can give a voice to more children and enable them to know that they, too, belong here. Thank you so much for your support - from everyone at Bamboozle.

What Bamboozle doES Bamboozle’s vision To empower all children and young people who have learning disabilities through creative interaction.

Bamboozle’s overall mission We offer learning disabled children and young people, along with their families and carers, innovative opportunities to interact meaningfully with the world, and to confound expectations of what disabled children can achieve.

Theatre and Touring Shows Bamboozle takes high quality, interactive and immersive performances into theatres and special schools in order to reach, engage and entertain all children - no matter what their learning disability.

Education and Learning Bamboozle provides creative learning experiences for children with special needs and shares its pioneering methodology with teachers and educators through training and research projects.

Families and Community Bamboozle produces transformative multi-sensory experiences for learning disabled children and their whole families, and find ways to engage those who are hardest to reach.

The Mayo’s Story Presented by Neil Mayo, Amy’s Dad. Less than a day after our daughter’s traumatic birth, we were told by an NHS consultant that due to their own negligent mistakes during delivery Amy had sustained significant brain damage and would not survive. Within days, intensive care specialists claimed Amy’s life was not worth sustaining and withdrew all treatment. We prepared ourselves for the worst but Amy had other ideas and refused to die! Treatment was restarted however we were told Amy would never have voluntary movement of any kind and would never learn or develop. Another NHS consultant claimed Amy would never achieve anything and invited us to abandon our daughter and walk away; to get on with our lives. For years, we attended disabled children’s groups and therapies that failed to inspire or achieve much apart from helping us make friends with parents in a similar situation. Experts continued to tell us Amy would not survive much longer, would never achieve anything, her quality of life would always be extremely poor, Amy was not worth the effort. Then, gradually, we started to be influenced by a few gifted individuals and one or two innovative and creative organisations, like Bamboozle, that had a positive and optimistic attitude about our daughter. Cracks of light start appearing in the darkness. Initially unbelieving, we begin to flirt with the idea that Amy’s life could improve. Imperceptibly, our own attitude and outlook changed and eventually positive change started flooding in. Bamboozle helped create a flood of colour, music, touch, smell, taste, laughter, purpose, hope and dreams. This flood replaced the darkness and despair we felt, not just during the sessions we attended but also in our home. Bamboozle equipped us mentally and physically to help us connect to Amy which in turn has helped Amy to connect to us and the world. We, and Amy’s carers, now spend as much time focusing upon Amy’s education and development as we do her health with results we could not even have dreamed of a few years ago. Amy, now a teenager, leads a rich, varied and fulfilling life with her loving and devoted family and care team. In this way Bamboozle achieved far more than they claim they can do. Bamboozle helped transform all our lives. It is my firm belief that with funding Bamboozle could transform many more lives, not just with families and in special needs schools where they are already active but also in health and care settings, both public and private.

Neil Mayo
