he island of Corfu is 18 km wide and 56 km long, it enjoys a mild climate, a beautiful Mediterranean scenery and an interesting history, which explains its unique culture. Many nations have tried to colonize the island and some succeeded for some time. Amongst those where the British, the French and the Venetians, all of which have left their “foot print” on this inspiring landscape. The central square of Corfu,
the Spianada, is the largest square of the Balkans. It was originally created for defensive purposes by the Venetians, as it would allow them to strike the enemy more efficiently in this open space, while they remained in hiding in the old fort. The Peristyle of Maitland is located on the Spianada, and it is an Ionic monument that was erected in honor of Commissioner Thomas Maitland. This monument was designed by the English engineer G. Whitemore. Whitemore’s work also

included the design of the Palace of Saints Michael and George, situated next to the square, which is built from Maltese Stone. Another monument in the square is the Monument of the Union of the Ionian Islands, dedicated to the union of the seven Ionian Islands with Greece in 1864, which is celebrated every year on the 21st of May. The French conquerors covered a large part of the square with grass and trees and the English created a cricket pitch on it. The sport has been very well received by the locals and cricket matches very often take place on Spianada square. The Liston is situated alongside the Spianada. Liston was constructed in 1807 during the French rule and it was designed by the French En-
gineer Lesseps, the constructor of the Suez Canal. It is a copy, of rue de Rivoli in Paris though of course in smaller size. Its archways and its hanging lanterns have been the meeting point of thousands of people, locals and visitors, every year, as Liston is very well known for its cafeterias. Liston wasn’t always accessible to everyone. In its early years a list would control the people who had the right and the privilege to enter this area. This list’s name was the Libro D’ Oro, which means the golden book, and it would only permit the noblemen and aristocrats of Corfu to enter. As this is no longer the case, Liston has also become the place from which one can enjoy the bands of Corfu when they parade. The island of Corfu has at least 18 philharmonic bands that carry its rich musical tradition. This musical tradition goes back to when Corfu was under the Venetian rule and it is then, when opera was first introduced to Corfu. Opera performances took place in

the theatre of San Giacomo from 1733. Nikolaos Chalikiopoulos-Mantzaros founded the first modern school of music in Greece, thus carrying on the islands musical tradition during the British era. Mantzaros is also the composer of the Greek National Anthem and a teacher of many musical talents, such as Spyros Xyndas who was the composer of the first Greek opera. It is during the same era that the first philharmonic band of Corfu was created, nowadays known as the “old
philharmonic”. The Corfiots have very much embraced this musical tradition and the island now has over 18 different bands filled with talented musicians. Aside from the old philharmonic, there are also many other bands that are well known and respected in Corfu, such as the Mantzaros Philharmonic Society, The Kapodistria Philharmonic Association and many others. The bands parade on numerous occasions throughout the year, but it is during Greek Easter that they are most im-
pressive. Their contribution to the festivities is immense and the outcome is always enjoyed by thousands of people, both Corfiots as well as visitors who come from all over Greece and other parts of the world to partake in this unique event. Such is the gravity of the musical tradition on the island that the Ionian University has created a department of musical studies. It is one the very few university departments on this topic and it is considered to be the best one in Greece.
Corfu’s rich cultural heritage couldn’t possibly be represented in a better way than it already is and that would possibly do the island more justice. The topic is vast and unending.
