CHLOMOS A traditional 13th century village, situated in the South Eastern part of Corfu, in the hills near Boukari with an altitude of about 250m. to peacefully settle in a place with a view to the sea. So they chose this part of the world, today known as Korakades. They soared the seas doing what they knew best and as they were great fishermen they fished and sold their fish to the nearby villages, where they also anchored their boats at Petriti and Boukari. As fishing was considered a strictly men’s job, their women ploughed and cultivated the land and made an ideal life for them. GARDIKI The Byzantine castle of Gardiki is to be found in the South western coast of Corfu and it is said that it was built in the 13th century by Michael A’ An-

gelo Komnino. Its walls form an octagon, with eight towers and there are signs of some ancient construction which has been embodied in the walls of this castle. The three Byzantine castles of, Angelokastro, Kassiopi and Gardiki to be found in Corfu to date, have played a very important part in Corfuâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defence and history. KYRA DIKAIA- SINARADES Directly opposite (the large baloon of the area of Sinarades with its magnificent view) is the small island of Kyra Dikaia to be found. Its dimensions are 60m long by 30m wide and is about 20m high above sea level. In its centre there is the Panagia Kyra Dikaia church and it can be
reached by climbing over 100 steps. Services are held twice a year, on the 29th of June and on the 8th of September. On this date many visitors from Sinarades and the nearby villages go to this island with their boats from Kontogyalos in order to partake in the service. After the service they buy roasted lambâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meat on a spit and they sit under the shade of the olive tress eating it and drinking the well known Sinaraditiko red wine. A small siesta in the shade usually follows and after that, a refreshing dip in the crystal clear deep blue sea, before their return trip back home. KORISSION LAKE The largest sea lake on the is-
land, an official nature resort protected by Natura. Situated in the South of the island, near Argyrades, covers an area of about 6000 stremma including the sea side areas around it. This lake attracts 126 different varieties of birds amongst which, are flamingos and ducks and also thousands of butterflies. Something else unique in this area is the Kedrodasos a wood consisting of sedar trees as well as a vast number of sand hills whose hight is over 15 m and there are white lilies with 14 different varieties of orchids on the sand. All this combined and the beauty of the entire scene of this sea lake make an unforgettable picture.
ARKOUDILAS The Arkoudila wood covers an area of approximately 250 stremma with a rich growth. Inside this wood on the top of the hill a 170 a.d Catholic monastery to Panagia of Arkoudila is to be found. The beach of Arkoudila spreads directly below and can be reached by a gravel road from the area of Kavos. The scenery will impress anyone, as numerous clay formations have been sculptured by the elements of nature. Also, many ants, butterflies, tortoises, scorpions, snakes, insects and the protected spices of the careta-careta turtles can be found there.
