From teaching the Sirtaki to selling homes, the story of the woman who built Corfu’s most successful real estate business is one that merits respect and recognition

Roula Rouva is nobody’s fool. When you first meet her, you know you are in the presence of someone utterly determined, completely focussed and very, very switched on. But that’s just the first impression. Because the moment she smiles at you, you know underneath the business powerhouse that you see is a real lady, one that is warm and understanding and decent and inherently kind. Roula Rouva started her career working for the family business. It was a small, private, family-run hotel and she worked the kitchen, the supermarket, the bar, in housekeeping, reservations and wherever else was needed. And often when asked by guests she would turn up the music and teach them the Sirtaki too. She remembers these times with great fondness, one of her rare and beautiful smiles breaking out over her face, “We had so much fun in those days. Everyone was so happy and we would all be laughing and dancing, hotel staff and guests, and we would fall asleep in the early hours of the morning, to wake up and do it all over again. Our guests became our friends and they would come back each year, sending us cards and pictures of themselves while they were away. It was beautiful.” However good things tend not to last forever, and the area in which Roula’s family had their business saw a drop in tourism, and as a result she had to find other opportunities that would enable her to raise her two young daughters. As a single parent and a young woman, Roula decided to set her goals high. In 2003, she started a lettings agency in partnership with a fellow Corfiot who had returned from Australia. She then went on to start her own lettings agency out of a small office in the north-west assisted by an English friend. Over a period of time Roula branched out into sales, as well as lettings, and in 2010 moved into her current offices at Corfu Town. Other than per personal powers of persuasion and the vision to provide a quality service to clients, she also used the most innovative of means to promote her business. She even got a local TV channel to carry a small show about real estate in Corfu, and the rest, as they say, is history. Overnight she was flooded with people who wanted to sell their homes through her and before she knew it she had over a thousand listings. “I was famous,” she says laughingly. These volumes required more personnel, and so in 2011 she was joined by Andy Marshall (see page 30) and Jenny who worked from Paxos. Today there are over 25 staff, including Roula’s own daughters who are now graduates and hard workers just like their mother. It wasn’t all smooth sailing however. The crisis in Greece left no one untouched. Roula had a team to keep motivated, two daughters who were still at university at the time, and a business to grow. “It was such a tough a time. I had to convince my team to keep going despite the fact that there were houses to sell, but almost no buyers. My girls needed me, emotionally and

financially, and it was a rough ride, to say the least, and I had to do it single-handedly,” she admits. “I had no life of my own beyond my work during that time, as I had to make sure that everyone else’s needs were being met, often at the expense of my own. But her vision never wavered, and she kept the dream strong. She took ideas from everywhere, networked religiously, egged on her staff to keep the faith… and eventually the good times came, and business picked up once more. In fact, it not only picked up, it soared. Today most of the staff are long-termers and each one has been hand-picked and groomed by Roula. She is utterly committed to their welfare, both personal and professional and her staff know that in a crisis she is their first port of call. She has maintained a sense of family amongst those that work with her and it is a palpable thing when you visit their office. Their head of security (he has a vest that says so) is an adorable poodle cross who will inspect you carefully for worthiness as soon as you enter. The inevitable Corfiot smile greets you from everyone, and one gets a sense of having walked into a friend’s house rather than a real estate office. As a leader Roula understands the need to run a tight ship, but she does it with a feminine hand that brings compassion, understanding and gentleness

to the table, as well. “My people are my priority. Their happiness is my happiness,” she says firmly. And this is reflected in the quality of service her clients get. Clients who buy from RR Estate get an after-care package that beggars belief. From being shown where to buy white goods, to coordinating with engineers and builders if needed, to being invited to get-togethers, to being directed to doctors and mechanics and accountants… the range of assistance is comprehensive and comes at no additional price tag. It’s just part of the package that Roula developed to offer customised support to both sides of the sale. “It’s just something we want to do and that we like to do. People trust us with their hopes and dreams and their savings, and so we want to provide them with all that Corfu can offer; friendship is an integral part of this island, so we want to make sure we give that as part of the offering, as well,” she says. During the process of a sale, home owners can expect a critical and fair evaluation, along with an appraisal of the legal paperwork required to ensure clear transactions; while buyers are presented with comprehensive documentation to ensure there are no hitches post the sale. “In all our years we have never had a single complaint, or any legal issues with the properties we have sold,” says Roula, justifiably proud of this achievement. It is no mean feat on an island fraught with real estate complications of various kinds. So are there any regrets. “Not one,” says Roula, firmly. “This is an aggressive business, but I have made my mark. I am building something for myself, for my daughters, and leaving a legacy of what a woman can do if she is determined enough. This example I have set is the best legacy I can leave my girls.” Today RR estate is a group of companies. They also have a luxury travel division with exclusive concierge services. They have recently started off a new chapter devoted to the luxury housing market called Infinity. com. They have opened offices in Athens to deliver the inviting Golden Visa programme for people looking to invest in real estate in Greece. They have partnered with associates all around the island to offer RR Real Estate hubs in all four corners of the island. They have a thriving branch office on the pretty island of Paxos. They also have a charitable bent and often help out a local children’s charity with clothes and food from time to time, and they are keen to extend this into an active CSR arm of the company. They are currently focussed on entering international markets with their various ventures, and unsurprisingly all of this has won them some impressive international recognition. In 2016, at the European Property Awards, in association with The Daily Telegraph newspaper in the UK, RR Estate Agency was Highly Commended in the category “Real Estate Agency Greece”. In 2017 they were an Award Winner in this category. Roula is justifiably proud of her achievements. But

“Chief of Security at Roula Rouva Estate Agency„

her pride is not merely personal. She is proud to be a Corfiot and her love for the island is clear in her tone of voice when she speaks of it. “From the greenery, to the olive trees to the sea, to Corfu Town, there is no place like this. We even had the first university ever in Greece on this island. If you want paradise, it is here,” she says. “I want everyone to find happiness here.” And so she encourages her clients to check out the areas on the island carefully and only settle on an area once their heart has spoken. She strongly advises RR Estate Agency clients to only work with professionals that they can trust, because that gut feeling is all important when one is buying a home and will make all the difference as to how the transaction plays out. With an incredibly demanding business to run, Roula does not stop herself from engaging in the things that truly matter. She is a caring mother, friend and daughter, giving time and importance to her close circle. Saturday is always family day, and she encourages her children and her team to find a balance between work and play. With all her achievements she has no intention of stopping any time soon and intends to keep going. Her quest to keep building her business is an ongoing one. Her passion for Corfu remains a guiding light and her dedication to helping people find the home of their dreams is a driving force. To do so she will go to considerable lengths; and that includes teaching her clients how to do the Sirtaki if they so wish it, just as she did many years ago, at her family restaurant. Lucky clients – it isn’t often one can find a real estate agent and a dance teacher all in one impressive package.

To infinity

beyond

With Roula Rouva Estate Agency clearing over a decade of service to enthusiastic home owners from around the world it was not surprising that the business evolved over time. From a single small office in the North-West to a suite of modern rooms in Corfu town and a staff of over twenty people. Today Roula Rouva Estate Agency covers a spectrum of services. Whether your needs are a humble cottage in the mountains or a luxury villa with an Olympic size pool, or simply a house to rent over the summer, the RR agents will find you whatever it is you are looking for. But with the evolution of the business, the high-end line of work began to ramp up, creating the need for a specialised set of services that catered to this market segment. And so INFINITY was born. Maria Michelle Rouva who is the brainchild behind the luxury end of the service spectrum said it took her months to come up with the name. “We wanted to portray more than just luxury. We wanted a name that would express the longevity of the purchase and the extensive range of services we would be offering our clientèle. Infinity will offer high net-worth clients a bespoke searchand-find offering. From airport pick-ups to concierge services to luxury car hire and entertainment options while looking for the perfect place, there will be no task too big or small to cater to the needs of the discerning clients. And while they are initially looking at focussing on the upmarket areas of Corfu – popularly known as Kensington-on-Sea – they will expand their offering to luxury properties around Europe and beyond. So whatever your requirements, Infinity will use its extensive network to find you what you want. “We currently have a beautiful palace in Italy that we are marketing, and I wish I could buy it myself, it is so beautiful,” says Maria with a laugh. The vast scope of their services has seen the Roula Rouva Estate agency receive numerous awards and this is only just the beginning. Maria is clear that she wants to use every marketing channel there is to promote this new brand and make it an international success.

8 | corfu

“We would like to be marketing hotels, listed buildings, working farms and smart houses… and we would like to do this using the most innovative means at our disposal.” While the market being targeted is extremely high-end, the quality of services will still be very much in keeping with the Roula Rouva way. Personal, efficient, friendly and targeted. One that keeps in mind the business interests of both parties firmly in mind. And no matter what the budget, value-for-money is a paramount concern. So if you are looking for the dream destination in which to find your dream home… look no further, With Roula Rouva Estate Agency you will quite certainly be taken to Infinity and beyond.

Gerald Durrell's

Corfu “Anyone

who knows and loves Corfu knows of Gerald Durrell. Meet the intrepid couple that keeps alive his memory and his incredible love for all forms of life

Sitting right at the top of the beautiful village of Perithea is the old manor house that has been lovingly restored by Alexina and David Ashcroft who are single-handedly doing much to keep alive the legacy of the much-loved writer and one-time resident of Corfu, the late Gerald Durrell. Anyone who has read The Corfu Trilogy has been entranced by the visions painted of an island where a young boy indulged his passion for all living creatures, going on to set up the Gerald Durrell Conservation Trust in Jersey. His hilarious, yet thought-provoking, memoir of his childhood in Corfu has made many want to come to Corfu and relive his experiences. And that is just what Alexina and David do. Evolving from the The Durrell School, which ran for fifteen years due to the generous patronage of Carol Acton from Dublin, the donations came to end in 2011, and the school continued on membership and seminar fees, and the hope that the Municipality of Corfu would be able to fund them from EEC Cultural funding. It was tough going for a while, and then in stepped Lee Durrell, wife of the late Gerald Durrell and Honorary Director of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust , who included the organisation under the umbrella of the Trust and the Gerry Week took wings. In a nutshell, in a Gerry Week, you get to live in a traditional Corfiot village and explore the island the way Gerry did as a little boy. The day begins with a lecture in the quaint conference room in the manor house, and then progresses to walks and hikes across different parts of the island while you learn about the flora and fauna of the island. From snakes to turtles, to local avian life to the lizards and toads that so fascinated Gerry as a young boy, one gets to explore the diverse wildlife and foliage of Corfu, and the diversity is quite incredible. “Corfu, this island that is forty miles in length, has the most varieties of snakes to be found in Greece,” says David proudly. And while the thought of reptiles of any sort might be a turnoff for a few, David and Alexina work tirelessly to destroy the fears and phobias people have about reptiles and insects. They work with local residents to make sure that they too learn not to fear these creatures and today the villagers have learned to peacefully co-exist with their non-human neighbours. Alexina is especially happy with the story of a young Corfiot boy who was terrified of snakes but within a week of his time with them was photographed lovingly holding a rather large snake, an expression of joy written across his face.

10 | corfu

The Gerry week draws a cross-section of visitors that are as diverse as the wildlife here and extremes of disciplines. Environmentalists, Gerry fans, herpetologists, historians, writers… flock to the Gerry week. And what starts out as an eclectic collection of individuals from literally every corner of God’s earth ends with an indescribable feeling of’ family’ as they progress through the week sharing this incredible experience of exploration, learning and discovery. A lot of this feeling of family has much to do with Alexina and David themselves who are gregarious, friendly, easy-going people who love to laugh and create a fun and level-playing ground for their visitors. Over the 26 years that they have been on Corfu they have integrated into life here the way the Durrells themselves did in the 1930s, embracing all things Corfiot whole-heartedly, while retaining their own cultural identities in the most heart-warming of ways. From replanting the vines in their patio, to creating the most tempting fare from local produce, to adopting all manner of life into the safety of their beautiful home, Alexina and David have created a little time-capsule of what life must have been like for young Gerry all those decades ago. Lee Durrell is a regular visitor to their home, and the conversations around the dinner table are as varied and engaging and controversial as any you might find in the pages of The Corfu Trilogy. Besides her, other greats have lent their hand in making The Gerry Week a resounding success. Dr Peter Sutton a renowned entomologist, Dr Bosse Stille, herpetologist, David Bellamy, the world-famous botanist, and David Shimwell, the renowned conservationist have all been a part of this unique week-long event each year that embraces nature in her many avatars. The ‘three Davids’ as they are affectionately called, and Alexina and Lee have together created and enabled an experience of some distinction for nature lovers everywhere. Like all others who have made Corfu their home this couple relishes the life they have painstakingly carved on this island. “I love it. There are absolutely no regrets,” says Alexina

emphatically, as she looks out the incredible views of the sea and the Albanian mountains from their lush-vine covered patio. “I remember strolling though Corfu Town arm-in-arm with Lee, and I vividly remember thinking I can’t believe this is actually real, that we are living this life,” says David, the wonder of it all clear in his eyes. From having local honey delivered to their door, to the villagers who show up with injured fauna, to growing their own organic produce, to friends from far and near who are regular visitors to their glorious home at the top of the village, this is truly the dream life. For those lucky enough to be part of the Gerry week, there is a lifetime of memories and good friends to take away from the trip. And all of it is just part of how life in Corfu was for the Durrells, and how life is right now for the delightful David and Alexina Ashcroft who have taken one of the best books ever written and brought it to life in their own special way. a perfect

retirement

“ Meet Pam and Candy, two British expats

who left behind high-profile jobs in the UK to live out a simpler, more peaceful 14 | corfu and fulfilling existence on Corfu „

corfu

| 15

Fourteen years ago, Pam John and Candy Brown packed up their belongings, said goodbye to a life in financial services and high-end food catering, put two weeks’ worth of clothes into a white van, loaded up their dog and drove off to Corfu, with no idea of where they were going to live. They got here and found a little place in St. George, and then waited for their 40-foot container to arrive. It did… four months later. Today, they live in a lovely two-storey home right on the beach, in Agios Giogios, catering to friends who descend on them regularly, making friends with the local taverna owners, and watching the Ionian sea change into the million shades of blue, green and silver as the days and seasons go by. Pam and Candy have approached life in Corfu as everyone should. With a lot of love and humour, a dash of “I-can’t believe-I-live-here” and a wonder for all this island provides those who value the things in life that money can’t buy. They never anticipated buying the property that they currently live in, and lived close by as they saw it bring built… a set of three villas, that graced the seafront. The builder of the villas invited them out for a drink one evening and asked if they would be interested in looking after these properties, and before they knew it, they owned a stunning house by the sea that today is the envy of all those who visit it. Pam and Candy have put a lot of effort into their home, adding the pergola, putting in a roof extension and developing the garden and the interiors to create the home of their dreams. Today a massive balcony extends out from the front of the house with chairs and tables strategically positioned to get the best of the view. This is where they can be found most evenings, a glass of wine in hand, drinking in the peace and sunsets in this gorgeous part of the island. So were there any regrets moving here. “None!” says Candy, with a big smile, “I’ve been back to the UK a total

16 | corfu

of three weeks, in 14 years, mostly for weddings and funerals.” One of their big concerns was that after busy and successful careers they would be living together day in-night out, and they were uncertain as to how this would impact them. As it turned out, this was not a problem at all, and Corfu eased them into this chapter in their life, as only Corfu can. Both of them have fallen in love with the simplicity of life on Corfu, and it is so different to life anywhere else. “There’s an outdoor element to living here that we never got in England,” and one sees that reflected in their beautiful patio and garden, where Candy grows her own chillies, possibly one of the few places on the island one

finds them. Pam had always wanted to live on an island, and luckily it did not take her long to convince Candy of the wisdom of moving to Corfu. From their first moment here they were overwhelmed by kindness of the people of Corfu. They got to know the owner of the local bar, 007, Dimitrios, who to this day collects and delivers their post and pays their bills and drops in for a drink when he swings by with the papers he has collected for them. They met Roula Rouva over 20 years ago, while on holiday in Corfu and it has been a friendship that has blossomed over the years. When Roula experienced some serious burnout, it was to Pam and Candy she turned, and stayed with them for a

period of time. Here she let the sea wash the stress away, and Pam and Candy gave her all the space she needed, and in between times kept her in fits of laughter with their candid observations of life. “It was destiny,” says Roula, “they were hugely instrumental in giving me the courage to start my own business and have been the most able and wise advisors over the years. The help ran both ways though. When Pam was in hospital undergoing surgery, Roula was a regular visitor ensuring that she did all that was needed to get both Pam and Candy through this rough patch, and in return, Pam and Candy are openly proud of Roula and her considerable achievements, both personally and professionally. It is perhaps their ability to observe life keenly and integrate into local life that sets Candy and Pam apart from other expats. They have become a part of the life on the island, mingling with locals and expats with equal joy. Pam is especially fond of the attitude she sees in the younger people on the island. “Young Greeks are so respectful. Here age is respected and the wisdom that comes with it is hugely admired.” They like telling the story of the time they locked themselves out of their home, and the young son of their neighbour ran around to get a ladder, clambered up it and into the house and got the door open for them. They make it a point to mention that this would probably have never happened with an adolescent back home in the UK. They’ve made a diverse range of friends on the island in their fourteen years and have managed to maintain close ties with many of those they left behind in the UK.” Pam feels some of the nicest moments on the island is when old friends come to visit, and they do a barbecue on the beach, and later lie down to listen to the waves come and go as they reminisce about old times. While once upon a time they were out to parties and events almost everyday of the week, today they like to take it a bit easy. Their popularity however still finds them going out more often than they realise, and it’s easy to see why. You see, Pam and Candy are just so much fun to be around. They have a dry and shrewd humour that is highly appealing and they ¬¬have lived rich and accomplished lives. To talk to them is to experience a unique slice of life, to experience Corfu through their world and their experiences. There’s a timelessness, an ageless quality to these ladies that sits well on this beautiful jewel in the Ionian Sea. From Pam’s love for New Orleans jazz to Candy’s skill in the kitchen, to their incredibly welcoming and gracious home, to their love for all that is both good and bad on Corfu, to the incredible stories they have to share, they embody the very spirit of their beloved Kerkyra… Candy sums it all up rather beautifully when she recalls her arrival at 3 am, on Corfu, almost fifteen years ago. “I’ll never forget the feeling of getting here and finding we actually had a house and realising that we were living the dream.” It is a dream that one usually never wakes up from, in general, for such is the magic of Corfu.

Living design

Corfu Life met up with the talented Christoforos Kardakis who is renowned internationally for his clean, elegant and gracious architectural creativity Corfu is home to all kinds of people. There are the seasoned expats, the holiday makers over summer, the retired pensioners, the shopkeepers, the bakers, the real estate agents, the hippies… together they all blend into the happiness of life in Corfu, and each brings their own special flavour to the table. But there are some people in Corfu who give the island a little extra fillip, for when you meet them you suddenly realise that this island draws to itself the most evolved, entertaining, quirky and kind-hearted souls to be found anywhere on this planet. Certainly, the first impression you get about Christoforos Kardakis is a person who is larger than life. He exudes a palpable energy and zest for living that infects you with his first hello and inexorably draws you into his world. And what a world it is. His office is filled with pictures of the homes and various buildings he has designed and restored and walking around is akin to being in a very special art museum. Each picture asks you to draw closer and makes one wish they could walk through the pictures into the houses itself. Christoforos was hugely influenced by his father who was a civil engineer, and his childhood home had a library filled with books and magazines and equipment related to architecture that he would look at and play with whenever he could, and it set the stage for his future career. He went on to acquire a Master’s in Urban Architecture and his first job was with a creative

18 | corfu

studio in Turin where he experimented with design to his heart’s content, from using fabric created by the well-known Patrick Kelly and studio invenzione to create a line of dresses, hats and robes, to designing shop windows and furniture. He realised as a matter of this creative process where his real architectural leanings lay. “Architecture is only one part of what an architect does. From a chair to a window, the work of the architect is all-encompassing, and no single detail is more important than the other,” he says emphatically. Christoforos has offices in Athens and Corfu, and did several impressive projects in the capital. However as the economic crisis hit Greece, he turned his attentions to Corfu and Paxos and other Greek islands to focus on specialised work in these places. His range of work has seen him design hotels, offices, homes, vintage renovations – he recently restored a historical home of 400 m2 in north Corfu, that he is especially proud of. He is currently putting together apartments in the fabled Liston Square, and is in the process of restoring the façade on a set of buildings that face the port. So, what drives the man and his passion. Very simply Christoforos loves working with people. It gives him immense pleasure to see a client’s vision take shape, and to be able to deliver on aesthetics and functionality to the best of his creative abilities. “Most of my clients go on to become my friends,” he says cheerfully, clearly pleased by this particular aspect of his work. It’s easy to

see why he builds such positive personal relationships out of professional associations. His easy, good humour and his expansive disposition are hard to resist, and most of his clients want more of him long after his houses are built. He is able to steer his clients in the most conducive of architectural directions without impeding their personal vision, and therefore offers a win-win situation – not easy to do in any creative field,

with architecture being one of the hardest fields. Often people are convinced of a certain type of building that does not work with the contours or landscape and Christoforos has his work cut out in making sure that he and they make it to the same creative page without compromising on vision and personal states - no mean feat. His love for his work is apparent in his designs. Each building, while unique, has a distinct stamp of his personal touch. The buildings seem to flow out of the ground almost as if they had been rooted there by nature. Glass, chrome, brick and stone live side-byside in gracious harmony, and no matter how big or small the construction there is an air of welcome and comfort from the very first glance. Christoforos’s ideas are not just limited to his work in Greece. His interest in architecture and design extends to all areas of human life and he is fascinated by the building boom in the GCC countries. Dubai, especially, fascinates him. “It’s theatre,” he says excitedly,” I love it.”. He quite likes the interesting designs he saw

corfu

in Abu Dhabi as well, and he waxes lyrical about the ability of architecture to lend character to a place. When Christoforos walks through a place his eyes pick out the finest of architectural nuances… from the light gleaming off a window, to a little-noticed motif on a signage, to the shape of old winding street, to the lines of a building that soars up into the sky. His artist’s eye keenly picks out all the subtleties that you or I would miss, and he absorbs it all, bringing it all home when he is bent over his notepad sketching out his next project and creating spaces and designs that take one’s breath away. Christoforos is keenly interested in the concept of smart cities and has put much thought into this evolution in architecture. However, he is not sure if this concept is applicable to Greek cities yet, given their age and the historical context of the existing infrastructure. “Maybe someday,” he says, “this will happen, but not someday soon in my opinion.” But in his usual way, he looks at architecture as an extension of life, as indeed it is, and

he continually reads up and keeps pace with the rapid changes that keep redefining this industry. His dream is to eventually design a housing community by the sea for the creative community, one that taps into and nurtures talent and ease of living. “Of course, this would be have to be designed free of legislative hurdles, if possible,” he says with his usually engaging smile. Christoforos is an architect of some distinction. But more than that he is a delightful human being and time spent with him, either professionally or personally is bound to both inform and entertain one. While Corfu is home to many people of unique personalities, Christoforos stands heads and shoulders above most… quite literally, as he is singularly tall. And should be lucky enough to engage his services as an architect, you will come away with a pocketful of laughter, the home you always wanted and a friend who will in his own unique way show you why people who live in Corfu, or who are from here, are so special.

Building excellence “Building

a house is a special experience fraught with both pain and pleasure. Here are some tips from an expert to make life a little easier

Anyone who has ever contemplated building a house, or has even built one, will know that the joy of owning a home that is truly yours from concept to finish is sometimes rivalled by the aggravations that can come with the territory. The internet is filled with horror stories of how things went wrong, or expenses mounted, or work stalled for reasons out of anyone’s control. This is why getting things right with your builder and civil engineer at the very beginning is vitally important to the end quality of your construction and your peace of mind. Once you have gone through the arduous process of choosing your plot of land, no mean feat on an island as beautiful and varied as Corfu, it is important to keep in mind your future lifestyle as this will define your build, going forward. When planning to build a house in Corfu the single most important step is after your architectural design is ready, is to identify the civil engineer (your builder can help in this selection process) and to get a detailed costing in place from the logistics he or she has provided. Ideally, this costing should stay fixed, but with market fluctuations in things like price of cement or steel, oil and gas hikes, or taxes, or even the cost of bathroom fitments that are finally chosen, the build cost can vary from what was initially projected. If one is looking for an average size family of four, it is recommended that one builds a house of at least 120 sqm, as this will give enough space for a small

guest bedroom in the case of unexpected or expected visitors. A house of this size, from the time that all the permissions have been received and clearances granted, can actually be completed in about three to four months, all conditions being equal. However, the weather has its vagaries, and this can hugely impact building time. Last December, Corfu had one of the wettest winters on record, and the heavy rainfall delayed a lot of building projects across the island by a couple of months. Sometimes, material requested by a client may take a while coming from a supplier… these are things normally outside the control of a builder. It is vitally important to assess the reputation of the builder you choose and if possible see his or her other builds. That due diligence is vital, as for the time of your build your builder/developer is likely to be your best friend or worst enemy depending on how things turn out. Some of the things to check on are the builder’s relationships with suppliers and the knowledge he or she has on current building techniques and technologies. As to the build quality, a developer is only as good the suppliers and manufacturers used, but the proper use and fitting of the supplies is very much the responsibility of the builder. All materials are normally EU or ISO certified, but reading through the fine print is arduous. This is something else that a builder takes care of through the process of construction. While building laws all across Greece are pretty much the same, it must be remembered that building on hilly, rocky terrain such as found in Corfu will be a different ball game than building in Athens. A good developer/builder will use a team of professionals to best complement the needs of the plot and manage the process and time frame of the construction. While it may be tempting to outsource or do some of the work yourself, it is always wiser to let the experts do what they do best and will probably save you costs in the long run. In a nutshell, a good builder will give you the home you always wanted and give you peace of mind during the duration of the build, and peace of mind well after. It is possibly, one of the most crucial decisions you will ever make, so take your time and do your due diligence. It will be well worth it.

Portrait of an artist

“Meet the award-winning Greek

artist who lives in Corfu and whose paintings grace the walls of Roula Rouva Estate Agency’s offices

It all began when Irena Penna was twelve years old. Her mother had a friend over and Irena began sketching her on a piece of paper that was at hand. Both the adults were taken aback at her ability to transfer a three-dimensional face into a deft and realistic two-dimensional format. And so began her career with art at that very young age. Despite her obvious talent, Irena never actually studied art and taught herself techniques over the years, observing nature and humans and everything in her environment with the eye that only true artists have. Like most artists her love affair with colour is an abiding one, and she is passionately fond of flowers, and is utterly inspired by sunsets in all their myriad hues. She has a special fondness for the sunsets of Corfu that shimmer and shift over the Ionian Sea, each one singularly different and unique. “I find that looking at just a field is sometimes an inspiration for me to paint and to try and capture the essence of what I have seen,” she says. While Irena is a huge fan of surrealism, she is also an avid admirer of Dali and Da Vinci. “I love rationalism and logic, and I love it because these are qualities I fail to cultivate in myself. It is why architecture moves me deeply, as this field brings together rationalism and art and practicality together in the most incredible of ways. And this is another reason to love Corfu. Corfu Town is an adventure in architecture. I see such life in the buildings there. Whenever I look at the Old Fort I am reminded of an old man who has lain down to rest for a while after a long and hard life. There is so much symbolism on every street, from the Venetian influences to the Hellenic touches, to its military past and of course the mythology and stories that are written into the very pavements of this place.” Irena has won several awards, but before she got known for her fluid and mystical style, she worked at many other jobs. She was a make-up artist, a role she enjoyed hugely, and loved working with colours while using the human face as her canvas. She also worked with a ceramics company, adorning the hand painted tiles with her imagination and skill, but ‘just a job’ was never enough for her artistic leanings. Unfortunately, like all great talent, she was plagued with self-doubt, and was unsure of her own abilities to venture beyond painting for herself. However, when she was 30 she was invited to be part of a team of exhibiting artists, and biting the bullet she decided to participate, and she was an instant success, her paintings snapped up by art connoisseurs who saw in her work that which she was too diffident to see herself. Today, Irena has eight personal exhibitions to her credit and has participated in over 120 exhibitions around the world in association with other artists. Her talent has won her two major international art awards (first prize from the Philological Society of Parnassos, Athens and from Chianciano Art Museum Italy), but mostly Irena continues to paint for art’s sake. In fact, ask her offhand, and she cannot even recall the names of the awards she won, and brushes aside these successes as negligible subjects of conversation. Her work has been covered by television

channels local, and some of her works have found their way to book covers as well. Hera Papapostolou, an art critic and art historian, Eva Perdiki an art historian, Marina Papasotiriou curator of the National Art Gallery of Corfu, Marina Mauromihali curator of the Corfu art Gallery and Dr. Nikolaos Papadimitriou assistant professor in the department of F.L.T.I. in the Ionian University, have all written about her work work, praising her unique style and ability to render logic and mysticism together on a single canvas. Her work is on display in the permanent exhibitions of the Corfiot Gallery, Department of Plus Corfiot Painting, as well as in the Municipal Theatre of Corfu, the Chinese Embassy in Athens and in private collections, while various institutions have bought into her talent as well. In her work. she prefers the use of mixed-media and thrives of combining texture and colour to create sensation. She is renowned for her themed work using chess as the template for her creations and this series of her work are striking and powerful, combining once again the elements of rationality that chess embodies with elements of surrealism and mysticism that is superbly juxtaposed against the starkness of black and white. Her series express the sacred feminine, portals to other worlds, floral touches and combine surrealism with an element of the mystical. She uses black and white, often with bold splashes of red to convey meaning and symbolism to her pieces, and each painting if comprised of a hundred different details that invite close inspection to take in their full nuances. Irena truly paints for the love if it, it a calling she cannot ignore. Very much an owl, she paints best at night when the world is asleep. In the silence of the dark her paintbrush springs to life, and her imagination takes her to those worlds only artists get to visit. “Painting is like meditation to me,” she says thoughtfully, “I lose myself completely in it, and only

28 | corfu

when a certain threshold of creative energy has been reached can I stop.” She does not paint for money or recognition, as we have seen earlier. “In this business, money comes, money goes. Some months you sell a lot of paintings, some months you don’t. But this is not why I paint. I create art because it is as natural to me as breathing, it is something I have to do.” Irena is diverse in her artistic range. Some of her paintings are water colours that embody the mystical qualities of the flowers one finds on Corfu. Yet others are bold and vibrant, with elements of sophisticated symbolism that speak to hidden truths she has explored in imagery. And then there are her mixed media pieces that are almost childlike in the maturity of their expression. She is keen to explore different variants of art in the future and is planning a series of artistic endeavours that combine the tree of life with anthropological elements that explore the various aspects of human evolution. Her other love is angels and their magical, ethereal quality and she hopes to start work on a theme of paintings that convey all the elements of these beings that are so much a part of every world culture. Irena also enjoys working with children. She loves them and especially enjoys them when they are between the ages of one and three… possibly one of the few people in the world who enjoys humans while they are full throttle in their terrible twos - one cannot really fathom the working of the artistic mind. Irena has conducted art classes for children of various age groups and has benefited greatly from these interactions she feels. “If I was not an artist, I’d be a nanny,” she says quite firmly. And in that one line she sums up her art. Innocent yet ageless, gentle yet forceful, simple yet complicated, playful yet gracious – in fact, that also sums up Corfu, that incredible work of art that Nature made. It is not surprising that Irena Penna made this island her home.

on

location “The well known producer

talks about his globally popular show and what it was like filming and working in Corfu

Christopher Hall needs no introduction to anyone who watches TV regularly. He is the son of the radiant actress, Leslie Caron, and the versatile director Peter Hall who taught him all about the “civilizing importance of the arts”. He has produced some of the greatest hits on British television such as Archangel and Hound of the Baskervilles to name a few. In 2005, he was nominated for an Emmy for the animated natural history drama, Pride. He finished the ten-part series, Dracula, and a 13-part medical series, Critical. The list goes on, but Christopher is at the moment, the producer behind the enormously successful, The Durrells in Corfu, which is based on the characters from Gerald Durrell’s famous works, The Corfu Trilogy. The show has captured the imagination of an audience around the world and revolves around the central figure of the life of Gerald Durrell’s mother, albeit with some creative license from the actual trilogy. “It’s not a pure adaptation. We capture the spirit of Gerald Durrell’s books and we worked with Simon Nye the very talented writer who did the previous British TV adaptation of “My family and other Animals”. We play a lot with distances and decided to use the whole island – we used locations that worked visually,” says Christopher. And that certainly worked well. Viewers have been entranced by the island as depicted on the television series and the heart-warming show has made Corfu an even more popular destination with travellers than ever before. Christopher believes the success of the show is down to the fact that it touched on a simpler time, when childhood was safe. When a child could go out in the morning with his sandwiches and come back after a day of wandering

and romping, being allowed free reign to develop his interests as creatively as he saw fit. There was the charm of the central figure of the show, Louisa Durrell, the mother of Gerry, Larry, Leslie and Margo. Through the book, and this was recaptured vividly in the show, was her enlightened parenting style that went on to produce twoworld famous writers who hugely impacted the world. “Of course, other than the story line, the success was also down to the entire team that came together to implement the vision. The terrific writing, the performances, design, costume, make-up, titles, music…all the elements came together to make the show the success it is” And of course, as lovers of Corfu know, the setting could not have been better, Each season was filmed over a period of three to four months and involved long hours of planning and work and coordination. And of course, this came with its own set of challenges while on location at Corfu? “It wasn’t always easy,” says Christopher wryly. “We had to deal with the heat and mosquitos and Corfu has little in the way of film infrastructure. I don’t see why it should, as it is primarily a holiday destination, and not geared to the film industry, but it did mean the logistics had to be planned far more carefully and we had to bring in a lot of equipment from Athens and the UK.” “We worked with the Roula Rouva Estate Agency from day one and it has been a very successful partnership. They helped us navigate our way through many issues while we used their premises as our production offices. It was very useful to have their space to work from and to store our things during our time there. In fact, Roula Rouva became our fairy godmother,” says Christopher, with a laugh. The filming of The Durrells in Corfu was what brought Christopher to this island. “I had visited other Greek islands, but it was my first time in Corfu, when we filmed the first season of this show,” says Chris. Would he ever consider moving here? “No,” he says firmly, “I’m an Englishman and no matter where I travel I need to return home.” But he is certain he would like to come back for more visits, as like many others he recognises the unique quality of this place. The Durrells in Corfu should be returning to film in Corfu in September this year to start work on the fourth season, and Chris is certainly looking forward to that. He especially loves the local tavernas and by his own admission loves his food - Marina’s Taverna in Corfu Town has especially good memories. Chris speaks warmly of the openness and friendliness of the Corfiot people, and he and the cast and crew truly enjoyed their time here. So as an eager television audience around the world waits for the next season of the The Durrells in Corfu the island looks forward to the return of Chris and his team. For through the show they transmit to the world all that Corfu holds dear – simplicity, warmth, gentle living and the incredible beauty of this lovely island. We can’t wait to turn our tellies on.

love island

“Corfu is the kind of place where falling in love

comes easy… the people, the gentle Greek dogs, the incredible blue of the sea… they all inspire a deep wellspring of love that impacts life at a very personal level…

Go to the North of the island and everyone knows him. From the garage owner who will fix your puncture for a tenner, to the man with the travelling fish van, to the accountant, to the chef at the local Chinese… everyone knows Andy. He’s Mr Fixit, and if he can’t get something done for you, there’s a good chance it can’t be done at all. He has the energy of a thousand whirlwinds and he’s a popular sight in his black Land Rover Freelander which can be seen zipping about the North throughout the day as he ferries clients around, or just generally goes about sorting out things for the local community. From arranging toilet seats to getting you insurance to introducing you to the best tavernas in town, Andy is your man. Andy Marshall was all set to be a policeman in the UK, soon after he left school. So before he embarked on his working life he treated himself to a holiday on Corfu thirty years ago… and he never bothered going back. The island grabbed him, and he grabbed back with both hands. He is the ultimate entrepreneur and the most consummate people person you will ever meet. A combination that saw him try his hand at many things over the years. From a young age he was a qualified water ski instructor and had his own ski school and water sports centre, ran night clubs, and guest houses, was a catalogue model on the quiet... and over the

years he became an integral part of the social fabric of life in north Corfu. He joined Roula Rouva Estate Agency ten years ago, lending his own special charm and zest to the business – his natural outgoing nature and cheerful disposition winning him clients from all over, clients who quickly became friends. But Andy will be the first to admit that all he has done over the last decade, both in his personal and professional life would not have been possible without the quiet, steady and gentle presence of his fiancé, Martina Delezalova, who has been the perfect foil to his adventurous and gregarious ways. You probably will not find two people more different to each other, but you’d also be hard pressed to find two people who dovetail into each other more beautifully. Martina, who is from the Czech Republic, likes the quiet life, is an early riser, preferring to go to bed early and have quiet nights in. She is an avid exercise enthusiast who is currently planning a career in personal training and fitness and speaks in soft and measured tones. Andy, in contrast, loves a good party - the later into the night, the better, and finds it difficult to sit still and do nothing. Andy and Martina are living proof that opposites not only attract but work together exceedingly well. They met on Corfu ten years ago. And the island, they believe, had something to do with them falling in love almost instantly. Martina had arrived from the Czech Republic, with a friend who had worked here previously, having found a waitressing job in Corfu online. She still recalls her first trip in to Corfu, “I arrived in Venice, having travelled from Czech by bus, and had to walk from the bus station to the port with my suitcases. I’ll never forget that.” Her new boss met her in Corfu, and showed Martina and her friend to the apartment, and then nine days later promptly moved into the apartment with them. They contacted Andy via a mutual friend to explain the uncomfortable situation they had found themselves in and, voila, in inimitable Andy fashion, he had sorted them out with new jobs and an apartment before you could say Kerkyra. The new job was not all that Martina hoped it would be, however, and she fell ill, to boot. Andy was at his attentive best bringing her food and medicines and taking care of her till she was a bit better and able to go home back to the Czech Republic. But it wasn’t long before he messaged her asking her to return, and Martina did not have to be asked twice. She came back to Corfu and moved in with Andy and ten years later they are still together, living in the same pretty little villa by the sea, taking care of Betsy their spaniel, each other and all those who come into their lives. Did they expect it to go so far? “Not really,” says, Martina, “and there are times when I still want to kill him,” she says with a laugh. When asked about how the differences in their personalities work for her she says, with a smile, “I want him to be happy, and so I enable that in the best way I can. I love that he is so helpful and kind with everyone, and he has a great relationship with his mother, which is quite beautiful. And when it’s just the two of us, lying outside on mattresses looking up at the stars on a soft summer evening, the differences seem to matter even less than they normally do. Andy was a lot more

corfu

| 33

of everything he is now when I first met him, and I was just 25. Together we’ve grown into each other and brought out the best in each other.” Andy is equally committed to Martina. Most of his clients get to meet her, even if it is a quick run past her place of work to say hello as he takes them around the island. He mentions her name often in conversations and will sometimes stop to pick her seasonal wild flowers that he knows she likes as he returns home in the evenings. He made sure she learnt how to drive and continues to encourage her independence and talents with a tenderness that is especially touching. So how did life in Corfu play out for their love story? While living in Corfu can feel like an endless holiday, both Andy and Martina have worked hard at making their lives on the island comfortable. And despite the glorious vistas that greet them on their doorstep every morning, and the wide and diverse circle of friends they have cultivated, both of them do feel the need to escape every now and again. Martina, especially, misses

34 | corfu

her family, and goes back once a year to visit to them and every year, together, they both plan a holiday in some other part of the world over the winter. Their firm favourite is Cuba, where Andy can fish and Martina and can laze about by the sea without worrying about getting up for another long day at work. Like all couples they have their worries but they both know that they will be able to handle it together. They’ve both built good relationships with each other’s families, and this has helped them both stay close to each other over the last decade. Andy’s mother, Isobel, summers in Corfu each year, and she and Martina have a loving, easy relationship that has grown stronger and stronger with time. And despite the small size of the island, where there are not a lot of places to run to, this couple has ensured that they give each other a lot of space to grow and develop as individuals, cultivating interests and friendships that give them a life beyond each other, as well. In all of the last ten years, Corfu has been the backdrop to their romance and the life they continue to build together. And one couldn’t imagine a more perfect setting to meet the love of one’s life. In Sidari, at the north of Corfu, amongst the soaring cliffs is a little islet called Canal d’Amour. It is said that if you swim across it to the other side you are certain to find your true love. It certainly worked for Andy and Martina, and not surprisingly, they don’t live too far away from this spot. Certainly, those who know Corfu will tell you that falling in love here is easy… for even if you don’t meet the love of your life in Corfu, you will most certainly fall in love with Corfu – and there are few loves as special as this.

“ Despina Polychronopoulou is a skilled Greek language teacher who makes the learning process fun and interesting „ Despina (known as Depy to her students and friends) tells you that she uses a fun‘teknika’ to teach her students a new language. She keeps her students engaged and busy while conquering their fear of learning a new language. “Language is what enables communities, transfer of information and leads to a better understanding. I want to do my part in helping make this happen,” she says, with a smile. “I’m especially keen to teach children under the age of 10, and do not follow traditional teaching methods for children or adults; I tailor my teaching to their individual needs. ”She has trained in teaching both languages and is specialised in teaching Greek as a second language and has a certificate of proficiency in English in addition to her official teaching license.

She tries to make her schedule as flexible as possible to accommodate her students’ needs and works hard to understand the individual levels of ability of those she works with. She also conducts short-term courses for tourists who are looking to get a sense of language. “There is however no substitute for individual practice, and your proficiency in Greek, or any language will depend on your personal commitment to it,” she says firmly. It is obvious, that Despina is passionate about Greek and about Corfu equally. She feels few places reflect the versatility and beauty of the Greek language as Corfu does. And with her cheerful disposition, her wide smile and can-do attitude, it’s not surprising that she is very much in demand for her services on this vibrant island that is so loved by all who visit it.

Divein!

“Few people get to dive down to explore what lies on ocean floors, but to do it an ex-Navy Seal – now that’s an experience to treasure„ When talking to Angelos Moumouris one is reminded of the famous line from John Legend’s song, ‘All of me’ – ‘My head’s underwater, but I’m breathing fine.” In fact, it’s his earliest recollection of diving when he was fourteen, and he realised that even though he was a few metres under water he was breathing in and out most comfortably. “I first began diving in Paxos where the visibility was one of the clearest I have ever seen, and the caves and the blue of the waters, and the sea life all held me in the most magical of trances,” he says smiling, “and when you are underwater nothing else matters. It is just you lost in a

64 | corfu

whole other world of wonder and mystery,” he finishes with a half-smile. Angelos rarely dives alone, but he really enjoys it when he has an experienced diver with him to share the incredible world one gets to enjoy beneath the sea. His passion for the sea and for all things related to physical fitness saw him gravitate automatically to a life with the Greek Navy. He underwent a gruelling training for six months to qualify and was one of the very few of the 150 selected who made it past the Devil’s week without losing his mind. The Devil’s week kicks off roughly around the 8th week of training,

during the which the cadets are not allowed sleep for an entire week, snatching perhaps an hour here or there, but even these are interrupted by sudden and rigorous drills. “We are not allowed to question, complain or speak during the entire time. You are stretched to the very end of your endurance, and physical and mental capabilities” says Angelos, grimacing slightly as he reminisces about the intense period of training he made it through, And made it though, he did. He was one of the 18 to graduate from the 150. Angelos started his first dive centre on Corfu, but also opened a centre in Paxos, called Paxos Oasi Sub as he felt the clear waters there would offer his clients a whole other viewing experience. He is a skilled teacher, patient, with a sense of humour that makes learning with him a pleasurable experience. He is an able story teller and will recount his times underwater with much dramatic flair. He especially recounts a time diving for bait in Vidos, and while swinging down to collect a sea worm suddenly found the entire ocean floor rising up to meet him at a startling speed. He barely made it out of the way as a giant stingray rose up from the ocean floor where it had been beautifully camouflaged by the sand, and had he not had the skill to dart off to the side it’s very likely that might have been his last dive. He has had a couple of hair-raising near-misses with 2-metre long reef sharks while he was filming underwater, and once while he was swimming through a series of caves, he came up-close and personal with a moray eel. But that is not the sum of his whole story. There are the good bits, Dives around the world, for example, and someday he hopes to swim off the coast of Iran and explore those waters. There is the joy of swimming in the waters of his home country, in the Mediterranean, and he has seen some incredibly amazing sights under water here, including two Monaches seals – which are extremely rare. “You see dolphins when you are out in the boat, but if you dive into the water they take off, as they are justifiably very scared of humans, given the overfishing and tourism that has slowly been taking its toll on the waters of the Med. He is keen to see a time when governments in the area will start to create sanctuaries and marine parks to preserve the delicate balance of underwater life and ecology in this area. He is not hopeful, but he shrugs his shoulders cheerfully and grins and says, “Perhaps one day…” Angelos in the meantime does his best to introduce newcomers to the joys of diving in as safe and fun a way as possible. He is happy to share his many tales with those who come his way, and even the most water-wary of folk are entranced by his tales from the deep. He does about three dives a day, and he realises that anything more will not be physically feasible, but one gets the impression he would like to grow gills as well and spend more time below water than on land. His eyes light up when he describes what it is like to inhabit a world few of us get to see. One is once again reminded of a famous song from the movie, ‘A Little Mermaid’ that goes, “Darling it’s better, down where it’s wetter, take it from me…”

If anyone proves this to be true, it is Angelos Moumouris, the ex-Navy Seal who, unlike most people, decided to dive into doing what he loved best.

come home to

greece “The Greek Golden visa offers non-EU citizens

an incredible opportunity to access residency in an EU country renowned for its beauty and hospitality

Anyone who saw Mama Mia or My Big Fat Greek Wedding has probably dreamed of living in this amazing country with a culture and way of life that is steeped in history and tradition. From the monasteries of Meteora to the famous Acropolis to the charming islands that dot the Mediterranean Sea, to the legends and history of the country to its amazing cuisine, Greece is unrivalled for quality of life. And now with the golden scheme launched by the Greek Government, those dreams can now become reality. The following points highlight the offer: • The scheme is of 5 years duration, with a possibility of renewal, provided certain legal criteria are maintained, and is granted to non-EU citizens • It requires a minimum investment of 250,000 Euros, invested into property in Greece, and in the case of married couples this amount does not double, making it one of the most affordable residency opportunities both in the EU, and the world. • The whole amount of investment must be paid either with a crossed check or with a deposit in a Greek bank account under the supervision of the bank of Greece. This enables transparency and legitimacy of transactions.

Georgia Koutsouri is an English-speaking lawyer who retains her law office in Corfu Town, handling cases in Ionian Islands and Athens. She has been a member of Corfu Bar Association since 2010 and specializes in property transactions, investments and civil law. She has studied law in the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens-Greece and has also been awarded with a Diploma in Negotiations by the Athens University of Economics & Business. She speaks Greek, English and German.

• The investors access the right for permanent residence, as well as citizenship. The application for the citizenship can be made after 7 years of maintenance of the above license, given all conditions are fulfilled. • All members of the family, such as spouse and children under the age of 21 also gain access to right of residence under this scheme. • If necessary, the investors can transfer their property to another foreigner along with their residence permit. There is no minimum time for the maintenance of the property before the transfer. • There is no obligation for the investor or the members of the family to stay in Greece to maintain their Golden visa status. • The possessors of the Golden visa can travel without restrictions to all other countries/ members of Schengen zone. They can also travel directly to their own countries of origin without having to pass through Greece first. • The Greek Golden visa does not provide one with access to the job market. • The Greek Golden visa offers access on the Greek educational system, which is of a high standard. As the world goes increasingly global, the ability to have freedom of movement in the Schengen area and to experience life in other parts of the world becomes more and more appealing to the globally-minded citizen. Greece, which sits at the crossroads between the two hemispheres, truly offers one the best of all worlds in a scheme that offers ease of transaction, the comfort of economy and transparency of operations for those who would like to call this special country, home.
